As I stood there with my husband I watched horrified as the events unfolded. During that time I clearly saw a face. I said it to my husband, immediately. He dismissed what I saw. I am sure you know by now that your photo is all over the web. The message board that I mentioned before gets some link or another posted several times a day showing your picture - all on different web sites. Few, if any, credit you for the picture. I hate that for you. Guess it wasn't copyrighted tho, since it has been in so many newspapers nationwide. At least it got people talking and thinking. One person on the message board even said that he saw the face live and first hand and had mentioned it to several people who thought he was nuts and was so happy to be validated when your photo came out. I'm surprised none of the controversy regarding the "face" in the smoke hasn't mentioned that you could see the smoke looking like a face even in the news coverage on CBS 2 (the local NY/NJ station). I escaped WTC building 5, ran home to Jersey City, and while watching the news on channel 2, remarked that the smoke looked like a face. Your photo is not the only image to capture this -- video cameras saw it, too. I don't think that this is a portent of doom. It's only natural for humans to make things look like faces. I can see them in the wood grain on my desk, in my bathroom rug, in the clouds and the trees. Yet it is an eerie image. Not sure if I'm contacting the right place, but didn't know where else to write to. I'm writing about the picture, taken of the burning World Trade Center tower, that has a image of the devil's face in the smoke. It is a remarkable picture, and also scary. But the main reason I'm writing, is to share what I see. I may be seeing things, but it looks to me that there is a second image of a face, that no one mentioned. It's a brown puff of smoke to the right, and a little further up, of the first image, and not as clear. My sister said she seen it too, and we both think it looks relatively nice......at least compared to the scary looking first one. Maybe it means "Good Verses Evil"? Who knows. But wanted to share what we saw. Dear Mark, First, thanks for being on the scene and taking excellent photographs. It was a horrible attack, and the fact that guys (and gals) like you were there to document it is very important. That's what journalism is all about. Second, the concept of you being at fault for capturing a startling image is as stupid as blaming JPL for catching images on Mars that some people thought looked like a face. We are all free to interpret photographs as we like. You took many photographs of the tragic attack. Many papers chose to run your photos. The tragedy you shot *was* evil -- devil faces won't make it more or less evil. I can't believe people would complain to *you* because one of your pictures, of terrible smoke and fire pouring from the WTC, captured an anthropomorphic cloud of smoke. We are in a profession of few actual reporters and many "media critics." They all need to get out there and do a real job, and quit hassling people who do actually work. (Yeah, I'm guilty. I haven't been a beat reporter for five years, but I am planning to return immediately. We have a crucial story to cover.) I saw your picture in the Philly paper last week. It creeped me out, made me think of Carl Jung, the famed European psychologist. He's the guy who studied archetypes ... these sort of mass visions related to evolution and whatnot. Never really believed any of it (slept through the college classes), but seeing your picture reminded me of all those failed classes. Anyway, my very good friend Jim Lowney heads the news-photo desk at Getty Images in lower Manhattan, and he says your pictures are terrific. Ignore the morons and keep doing good work.
