I was a little late getting there --- we had all heard about the Twin Towers being hit but the others had not heard about the Pentagon --- I heard about it on the radio on the way to the Toastmasters meeting and reported it to the members there. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On that morning I was watching TV and couldn't believe my eyes. I have never saw something so horrifiying. All that kept running through my mind is that it's a high building and how will all those people get out? How will they put out that fire? Not soon after did the second plane hit and then you knew it was an act of terrorism.I saw the first tower collapse and I immediately ran to my son's school and brought him home. Everyone around me was crying and I can't imagine if I was feeling so upset and didn't know anyone, how were these other people feeling that did know people that were trapped. It was horrible to then come home to find out the other tower had collapsed too. I can't describe in words what I was and am still feeling. There were so many victims and it hurts so much to think of their last moment and how they were trying so hard to get out. I have watched shows after shows on this tragedy and still get so upset that I know this is something that has made us stronger but also something you never get over or ever forget. On that day their were many heros. The victims who worked in those building were hereos. The FDNY, PAPD, NYCPD were heros too. All the volunteers were heros too. All of these people lost their lives doing what they do, working. Just as it was the job of the people who worked in those buildings it was also the job of the depts who tryed to rescue them. They are all heros. Many kids lost their parent or parents. Many woman gave birth to children who will never see their fathers. All I know that day everyone in the world lost something but also gained the strength to try to go on in their lives. Like I said I didn't lose anyone I knew but I feel for all of the victims family's that now must go on without part of their family. God Bless America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: A lot of things happened that day. Personally, I knew from the start that it wasn??t going to be a very pleasant day. I didn??t have any idea it would turn out as bad as it did; I just thought my teacher would yell at me for not having my project done on time. The morning came and went, and in the back of my head I dreaded having to go to my next classes. I wasn??t even aware of the date. The bell rang, and bad thoughts of being scolded by my teacher jumped into my head, instead I heard something else. A fellow student came in and said that a plane crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. I thought the guy was just playing around, or he just heard some stupid rumor. The second my teacher came into the classroom she turned on the television and I saw with my own eyes, that the student wasn??t lying. It was real. We sat and watched through the class, we even saw the second plane burst into flames as it struck the second tower. To this day, I don??t really know why the first thing that came to mind was the fact that I might get an extra day to finish my project. Watching all those people rush into the burning buildings though, something else arose out of my self-centered thoughts. A few minutes ago, we just heard that plane had hit the Pentagon. My dad used to work in a building only ten or twenty minutes from it, so I got a little worried. Right across the room, a girl was breaking down, saying that her dad worked in the Pentagon. More tragedy unfolded as my class and I watched the two towers collapse, along with all the rescue workers inside of it, on national television. Like most people, on that day, I felt something, something that screamed for to say it. It wasn??t anger against those who committed the crime, like most would expect. There was a little sadness, but not enough to make me truly remorseful. Instead, a different anger became present. I wasn??t angry at the suicide pilots who committed such a horrible act, I was sorry for them, that they challenged such a dangerous adversary. I wasn??t angry at the fact that people died, people die every day, but I was angry that I couldn??t do anything to stop them form dying. I was stuck inside a classroom, with no danger at al. all I could do was and watch as people died in from of my eyes. I was angry, that everyone else was doing the same thing. The saying is that everyone can make a difference, well that day, I know I didn??t. I??m angry with myself for being so incompetent, who else to I have to blame? The day began as most others, at work in a small town grocery store. I work in the deli and was preparing lunch for the day when a co-worker came and told us that a plane had crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. We couldn't believe it and gathered around the television to see for ourselves. As we stood there, all giving our own opinion of why the plane had crashed, we saw the second plane hit. We all knew immediately that this was no accident. We were under attack! We we heard about the Pentagon, I remember thinking whats was next. How on earth were we going to be able to stop who ever from flying more planes into more buildings and killing more innocent people. As I struggled to return to my work, my mind suddenly remembered my cousin Angie was living in New York. The last time I had talked to her mother, she had told me she was working at the World Trade Center. I had the most sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach as I dialed my own mother's phone number in Kansas City, Missouri. When she answered the phone, I asked if she had seen what was happening in New York. She said she had just turned on the TV and saw but still had not seen enough to know what was really going on. I breifly explained what we knew and then asked her about Angie. She didn't know anything, but would call and find out and call me back. It was the longest 15 minutes I think I can ever remember. Our family was lucky. My cousin and her husband and both been transfered to offices on the other side of the city and we not in the buildings. It was a relief to us, but so many others were not as fortunate as our family was on that day. After work, I went home, parked myself in front of the television and cried. Today, one year later, I can still recall all those feelings of disbielf, horror, terror, and then anger. To the familys of the victims, my prayers and thoughts are with you today. God Bless America! When it was 1:00pm my dad picked me up at school that same day and when we went to buy some hamburgers, he told me that in New York something very serious has happened at New York City. The radio turns on to wake me up and face each day. Usually it's music or just regular talk that wakes me up. Not this time. As I was dressing, I heard on the radio that a plane had hit the towers. I didn't really understand what they meant, whether it was a joke or from another country or such. I went to school, thinking nothing much of the information I had just received. I go to school and people are talking about the towers, and I chimed in, not with anguish or pain, but just out of the thought to be important by already knowing the latest gossip. 0 period went by without much attention, but the 1st period is what really hit me. My US history class with Mr. Heldwein was discussing the hit. Finally, we decided to see it on TV. Only then did I realize the severity of what had happened. At first I was overjoyed at the fact that we weren't going to do classwork. I finally realized what had happened. The 2 towers collapsed. Search rescues past. Death tolls were recorded. Months passed. Personally, I was numb to it. Then, it really hit me when my English teacher gave us an assignment to find a quote or poem in rememberence of 9-11. As I stood up late in night thinking of the perfect poem, it started to hit me. Then, in the morning, even on Power 106, Big Boy was talking about 9-11. As I watched the TV, and as I saw the grieving people, my heart was touched. On Sep. 11th, 2001 she left it on. The events hadn't happened by the time she left, so there was no particular reason for her to leave the TV on. I woke up and got ready for school like any other day, and I sat out by the TV as I put my shoes on. What I saw horrified me. People were crying and screaming; running away from a mountain of smoke. I had so many questions running through my head. Was it an accident? It seemed like it could be. But I watched in stunned silence as the second plane hit the second tower. I couln't believe what I was seeing. It could not be an accident. Who would do this to us? Why would somebody want to hurt our country? It was as if somebody ripped out the heart and soul of our country by attacking our homeland. My boyfriend, who is now currently serving in the United States Navy, came to pick me up. We were listening to the news on the radio. All the stations were broadcasting the news. We listened as people were reported jumping from the top floors of the towers. As soon as we arrived at school, we heard that another plane hit the Pentagon. The towers collapsed, killing so many. Another plane went down in a field in Pennsylvania - a heroic act by all people on that plane. So many lives were lost. We were dumbfounded. In stagecraft, we watched the news. In choir, we sang patriotic songs, in Government, we watched the news and talked about our feelings. It was a day of sadness and reflection. My friends and I went to Albertsons that day for lunch. We all piled into my friend's Jeep and drove in silence, listening to the news. After school, we sat in the parking lot for an hour, talking about what had happened. When I went home, I just sat and watched the news, slowly being joined by my family. We sat together around the television, crying about the utter sadness of the events unfolding around us. I wrote in my journal that night, about everything that had happened, and how unbelievable it was. Our lives have changed forever. America will never be the same. She was telling me about how in Global class she watched a plane hit the World Trade Towers, she thought that it was just a clip from a movie or something. At first I thought she was just messing around because that week in Global we were learning about Afghanistan. She told me that it wasn?t a joke and she was serious. It didn?t really hit me until after a few classes. In every class I went to, everyone just watched the news. I could hear people screaming and could see people running all over the place to get away from the buildings. I watched people jump out of the building to escape the burning blaze, and later witnessed the buildings collapse. It really affected me when you could hear people calling their families to say that they loved them and goodbye. Our nation really came together to help and aid people affected. I couldn?t believe how people trapped in the rubble could call for help on their cell phones for the police or their families. It was also terrible to see the Pentagon. You could see the floor of the building. The wall was torn right off and part of it was crushed. There was smoke flowing out of the Pentagon like water flowing in a river. When the news announced that a plane crashed in Somerset, Pennsylvania. People became very strange at first but then realized that it was Pennsylvania, not Somerset, New York, where we live. Everyone was still very upset with all the innocent people dying. I heard that this plane was headed to the White House but ended up in Somerset, Pennsylvania. I think that it is better that the plane ended up in Somerset than hitting the White House, but either way I feel very bad for the friends and families of these people. By not hitting the White House, no more innocent people died. In the days following the attack the United States was really brought together. Every where I went there were flags in front of peoples homes and on their cars. You couldn?t even find a flag in a store because they were in such high demand. Also on the news I saw people that went to the twin towers to help look for people and clean up the disaster. People went to New York City hospitals to help care for the hundreds of injured people. I feel that it is good that we were able to come together as a nation to help others in a time of need. In the days following September 11th the United States government thought that the terrorist attacks were caused by Osama bin Ladin. At that point the United States decided to get Osama bin Ladin for what he did to the U.S. In other Middle East countries I saw little kids on the news happy and running around because of the attacks on the United States. This made me feel very upset because people were happy from the deaths of hundreds of people. September 11th was a terrible day in our country?s history that will be remembered forever. We as a nation worked together to get through these hard times and now we are stronger than before because, we know that as a nation we can get through anything. It was definitely a historical landmark, but to me it began as just another Tuesday. I woke up 6:15 a.m. and like every other morning I sat on my bed for an ample amount of time until my exhausted body began the wake-up process. I took a shower, brushed my teeth, and got dressed, as I routinely did. I ate my breakfast and exchanged goodbyes with my family as we all headed out of the house. A sophomore at Oakton High School, at the time, I arrived at 7 a.m. to hang out with my friends before we all headed to class. Our first class was over at 9:05, we had a fifteen-minute break period, and then the second-class bell rang. I remember walking into my world history class and sitting in my seat. In fact, Nicole and I were in the same class, and ironically, our teacher began the discussion of conflicts in the world. We began discussing religious struggles, and the loud speaker came on in the classroom. It was our principal and he was informing us of what had occurred, he said, ?I have an unsettling announcement for the faculty and student body and it should be handled with serious precaution.? He continued to inform us that two planes were hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center. Our teacher then turned the television on and m oments later, we were informed that Flight 77 had hit the West Wing of the Pentagon. Everyone in the classroom had a frantic look on their face as a silence fell upon the room. I became very apprehensive as I tried reaching my parents and every time I did, the telephone lines were busy or disconnected. I continued to watch the television in awe and it had sunk in, I knew then that what had happened wasn?t unintentional; rather it was a violent attack on our nation, to challenge the nations unity. September 11, 2001 began as an ordinary Tuesday for me, however, by the end of the day, with thousands of lives lost, families divided, many wounded, patriotism and freedom in our country changed forever, and our country continues to stand united in the face of terrorists. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9-11-2001 I was sitting at home and my husband was working in Fort Campbell, Kentucky building army barracks. I worked as a deputy jailer at Crittenden County Jail in Marion, Kentucky. I was relaxing and just watching television and all of a sudden they started flashing the news about the World Trade Center and showing the first plane that crashed. I was immediately concerned for my husband because of the kind of work that he done and the location of where he was at that time. As I watched, I remember a feeling of traumatic sadness for the families that had lost their loved ones and the ones that didn't know for sure where their loved ones were. Now, on the anniversary of a year since the nation was upset so dramatically, I feel the loss even more for those people who lost their loved ones because on August 17th, 2002, I too lost my husband of almost 25 years. He and I were with friends in a boat on a Saturday afternoon to just get out of the house and he accidentally drowned. I know the suffering of loss. As the tears well up in my eyes, I too can only pray for some kind of peace in the lives of all of us. This peace can only come from GOD. We must be a nation that will turn to GOD not only in our times of need but on a daily basis for his guidance in our lives. Without GOD in our lives we are nothing. With GOD we have a friend that walks beside us through the trying times as well as the good times. He shall not forsake us, therefore we must uplift our hearts to him and give him control over our lives. In Memory of Randy L. But when the Pentagon got hit by a plane, I realuzed that this waas no accident. Then I found out that Twin Towers fell and thats when I began to think that we were under attack. What boggled my mind was who was crazy enough to do such a thing? All day I watched coverage about that horrifrying day. I just watched. I had to be up to at least midnight just watching in misbelive. It changed my life by realizing that our country can come together. I will never forget that day, and in the words of President Roosevelt, "A date that will live in infamy". Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to work that morning and listening to the radio. I heard about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center and thought what a terrible accident that must have been. When I got to work, I heard that a second plane had crashed into the building. At first I thought it was a strange coincidence, then realized that it was not. As I listened to the news on the radio, I learned that the planes full of innocent people were used as weapons to hit the building. I listened in horror and amazement. One of the men at work had a television, and I was glued to it as I watched the second plane fly into the building over and over again on the news replays. I cried, not caring that I was at work with my colleagues. As the morning progressed, all I wanted to do was go home and hug my children. Their day care owner called me at work and said the center was closing for the rest of the day due to concerns about their proximity to Orlando's goverment buildings and possible further terrorist activities. I was relieved to get them home. I could not watch any news coverage at home because I did not want my two boys to see the terrible events that they were too young to understand. I had to wait until the kids went to bed before I could catch up with the day's tragic events. I did not sleep well that night or many nights after that. I don't think my life will ever be the same again. I long for the carefree, secure atmosphere that I had just a short year ago. I long for a world in which my boys will grow up innocent, happy and safe. I long for peace in the world. Tell us your story: A co-worker of mine Henrietta Green ran into the office and turned on the small TV, she then called my name (Sheila Martin)and told me to come look. The news was showing the New York Trade Center where the first Plane had hit. Within second we saw another plane come into view and it hit the second building of the Trade Center. We were in shock. Then the new cut to Washington, DC and they showed the plane hitting the Pentagon. Henrietta and I began to gather our personal belongs and ran out the building to go home. We were very frighten by what we had just saw on the TV and what happen to the Pentagon. It was just to close to our building for us to stay. When I got home my son me why I was home so early I told him to watch the New with me and to show him what had happen. I continue to watch the new coverage for the rest of the day. Up until late that night I kept calling my sister because her best friend work at the Pentagon and we had not hear from her. It was very hard for me to sleep that night seeing the things that happen in New York and Washington, DC. That night I got down on my knees and pray for everybody in New York and Washington. The next day at work I found out that a co-worker in my office lost her husband at the Pentagon. It was very sad in the office the whole day because no one was able to get in touch with the co-worker to see if she was OK. Henrietta and I came in the next day to work and closed out the payroll for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and made sure that the people in New York who worked for The Department of HUD got paid. Tell us your story: I was sitting in a carpark waiting to collect my wife for lunch(Ireland is 5 hours ahead of New York) The radio station I was listening to was interupted the radioshow with a newsflash saying there were unconfirmed reports a plane had hit one of the towers. I'm 30 and had visited WTC for the first time when I was 13 - I loved WTC, as a kid I was mesmorized by the buildings - the plaza, the vast lobbies and the lifts... I was amazed the lifts could move at 25mph(I was a kid and easily fascinated by stuff like that!!!, I remember the view from the top - I though you could see forever. As I sat in the car that Tuesday when I heard the news I knew something horrible was going to unfold. I lost my appetite for lunch and we decided to go home to watch events unfold on CNN. We got home just in time to witness the horrific image of the first tower coming down. I immediately though of the elevator operator who told us the speed the elevators travel at... to this day I wonder did he make it... so many people lost, so many people's lives wasted... My wife and I sat for hours glued to the tv not believing what was happened to a city we love very much. Just to let the citizens of New York know that over here in Ireland, we were all horrifed and shocked by 9/11, maybe we feel more affected because so many Irish people have immigrated to New York. He went in the back of the office to use the phone and when he came back up he told me that the person who was going to come get him wouldn't because he was watching t.v. about a plane that hit the WTC. I thought it was some kind of accident and couldn't imagine how a plane could hit that building. A little while later another man walks in and says that another plane just hit the other building. We turned on the radio at work and heard that one more plane hit the pentagon and we all started to cry. We knew then that our country was being attacked. We could not believe what we were hearing. Anyway, on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, I was at a retreat in a really tony conference center in Westchester. We were having a presentation on something ? maybe ethics for young lawyers, or something like that ? when a friend of mine came in and said one of the towers had fallen. We'd heard at breakfast that a plane had hit one of the towers, but we assumed it was some tiny commuter plane ? a tragedy, not a disaster. But she was telling us that it was worse, and she was crying. Suddenly everyone was on the phone ? the firm's main office is in NYC, so most of the people there lived in or near the city. I tried to call my husband, but couldn't get a signal, so I walked out of the complex up to the road. Even when I got a signal, I couldn't get through. A couple of the other people there were also from the DC office. We decided to drive back. We called around to try to rent a car. The first few places I called wouldn't rent for a one-way trip. The next place I called asked if I wanted a round trip. "Yes," I said, which I consider the most justified lie I ever told. (Later in the day, the car rental places revised their policies, and I don't think there was a penalty when we returned the car in DC, but at that point in the day people had not integrated the shock with the rest of life.) We went to get the car. On the radio, we heard a report that a bomb had gone off a few blocks from the Supreme Court. The apartment my husband and I were living in was a few blocks from the Supreme Court. I still couldn't get through to him. I knew, I knew that the chances he was hurt were small. And I knew that when we didn't hear that report again as the minutes and hours went by that it was probably a mistake, but we never heard it retracted. I'm a yellow-dog Democrat, but I will always be grateful to Rudy Giuliani for what he did that day. He spoke on the radio, and he said that he didn't know how bad it was, but that it was bad, and he was strong and devastated and forthright. He showed that it was possible to be all those things together. We couldn't see much as we passed the city, just a big column of smoke. I never paid much attention to the skyline of NYC before, so I don't even have a sense of how it changed. The roads were almost empty. I remember passing a caravan of ambulances on the New Jersey Turnpike ? they were heading the other way, towards the city. Each one had different markings, because each one was from a different little New Jersey town, but they were all going together to give what help they could. Even then, we were getting a sense that they weren't going to be able to do much, but they were going. I cry every time I think of that caravan; I'm crying now. Eventually, we stopped at one of the Maryland rest centers. There was a woman there who hadn't had her radio on as she drove for hours and hours, and the other people there were trying to explain to her what had happened. It still seemed so unbelievable. I reached my husband, and confirmed that he was all right. We had trouble getting close enough to the Metro to drop me off because of roadblocks (one of the other lawyers took the car to drive the rest of the way home). But I did make it home. I found out that my secretary had told my mother that I was "in New York," not specifying, so she was quite upset for a while. Did I suffer? Obviously not, not in the way that so many people did ? and are right now. But it changed me. One of my law school classmates, a big brawny guy, was outside the Trade Center when it happened. A fireman came by and basically started collecting anybody who looked strong to come inside and help. They were heading towards the site when the first tower fell, so they didn't go inside. A few minutes later and things would have been different. Some of the lawyers I worked most closely with were taking a deposition that morning, at Rockefeller Center. The deposition ends abruptly, with a note that the building was evacuated. We used that transcript a lot during the litigation. The next day, I went to work, because I desperately needed something to do. The partner in charge of the case ? the same case the deposition was for -- wanted us all working; one of the other lawyers was disgusted at what he saw as insensitivity. For me, it was a lifeline, a way to keep from sitting and crying. Not too long ago, I got lost, as I often do, and I drove back to the area around the Capitol, because I knew I could find my way home once I was there. But there were all sorts of unexpected roadblocks, and policemen stopping cars and looking inside with flashlights. I drove past the Supreme Court and I couldn't see it. They're building these walls, you see, to make the building safer. But making it safer means taking it away from us, taking away equal justice under law and replacing it with high white walls. I cried most of the way home for this second loss. (Really you'll still be able to see most of it when they're done. But not the lawn where local dogs used to frolic and where we built the Snow-preme Court, with a bow tie for snow-Justice Stevens and a red hairbow for snow-Justice Ginsburg, not the beautiful architecture of the building's sides, and anyway it's the symbol of justice walled away that really kills me.) I had not turned any radios or any of my televisions on so i had no clue what was happening until my door bell rang and i saw my friend looking very distraught. As we were walking to the bus stop he was relaying the whole story to me about the attacks. " The Twin Towers are gone!" was the first thing i heard and i did not understand. At this point I had not seen the news, so i did not actualy see the destruction that went on, but when I got to school all of the TV's were on and when i finaly did see what happened for my own eyes, I was shocked and it reallly hit me deep down inside that this was the beginning of something terrible. A heart that said this can not be real.Sudden silence filled our normally loud home.Not only had this disaster impacked thousands of people I did not know, it changed the lives of our children forever.Our newest son turned 10 that day and this impact on him will live on year after year.Although we did not lose anyone that we knew there,our boy lost another sence of safety & happyness. During this past year he has been called twin towers and teased by other children.The fact that he is already a child who suffered extreme child abuse prior to coming home to us, now he has new issues.Trauma happens in so many ways.When you are a small innocent young child trying to put bad things behind you,this impact is great and long term.How painful this is for all of you.Our children know what is like to lose parents and loved ones.They feel like they know what it is like to ache from sudden loss.Our feelings of love and support go out to all the unnamed families who lost so much and got the same media attention.
