Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was heading to work from the 42nd Street subway station at The Main Library in NYC. I waited for the bus for awhile and than decided to walk down 5th Ave to 34th Street even though I would be a little late for work at 9am. It was a beautiful day - might as well walk, even though it would make me a little late. I was on the west side of the street and noted that there wasn't a cloud in the sky except for a huge billowing cloud of dark smoke from lower Manhattan. I reasoned that the only building high enough to cause that kind of smoke would be the World Trade Center and hope that wasn't the case - a fire in that building would be a tragedy. I crossed over to the east side of the street and the buildings came into view, it was an incredible sight. I started to notice groups of people stopped on the sidewalk, talking on their phones and murmurs of a something out of the ordinary. As I started to cross 37th street, a huge fireball exploded from the south tower and the man next to me cried out "jesus, oh lord, jesus" - I was very confused. How could the fire in the one building cause an explosion in the 2nd building (I was north of the buildings so didn't see the 2nd plane hit from the south)? I began to hear people talking about terrorism and dismissed that as paranoid rambling. I did ask someone with a phone what had happened and they said a plane had flown into the WTC. I reasoned that a pilot had a heart attack or it was all just a freak accident. I got to work and immediately tried to find a radio or TV - the people in my office were unconcerned and oblivious. I didn't know what to do - part of me wanted to leave the building and head toward the disaster (we were fire watchers in my small home town in Wisconsin - barns burning at night were especially exciting) but decided to stay put as my boss wasn't in yet. I headed for the roof of our building but the engineers wouldn't let me out there - security had closed the roof as we are directly under the Empire State Building. I went back to my office, tried for news on the web but found nothing, so decided to call my sister in Wisconsin - she watches Katie Couric and probably knew what was happening. She told me that 2 planes had flown into the Twin Towers and they said it was terrorism. I vehemently denied that that was possible, she assured me that it was - what else could be the cause of 2 planes flying into the buildings. My head was reeling and I had this unreal feeling. I went to CUNY TV to find a television but they wouldn't let me in - everyone looked like they couldn't decide if they should just ignore this thing or panic. As I walked down the hall, Ray Ring told me the another plane had crashed into the Pentagon - finally I had to admit that that it was terrorism. Whole new world - what kind of crazy bastards would do such a thing? I went outside and now there were crowds of people standing watching the buildings burn - car horns were blaring from everywhere but the number of cars on the streets were becoming less and less. I heard that the bridges and tunnels were closed, no one could get off or on the island and all air traffic had been ordered grounded. Someone told me that people were jumping out of the buildings and I felt sick - that is when the horror of the situation actually hit me. I didn't stay to watch the towers burn or fall - I went back to my office and called my sister-in-law and sister in Wisconsin so they knew I was alive and ok. I was scared but decided to not panic, to make sure everyone in the office was ok and to wait for my boss to arrive. One of the staff's husband and son were on a flight back to the US from India that day. Their flight was grounded in Canada and they did not arrive back in the US for another 5 days. They finally got some televisions wired, the images were amazing,and we were told to stay in at the Graduate Center. People were worried that the Empire State building would be hit next. I didn't know what was going to happen next, thought maybe it would be really bad and decided to go to the bank and draw out a large sum of money. Masses of people were walking up Fifth Avenue from lower Manhattan, heading uptown or to the 59th street bridge to Queens. I saw a number of young men covered in white dust - I asked them if they were ok and they said they had escaped and it was an incredible sight to have witnessed. I also bought alot of candy for everyone back at work. I am not a big candy eater but I guess it felt like a comforting gesture. I wasn't sure what to do or where to go. Around 1:30, I realized that we had not heard from David Levine, a member of our office who lives below Canal Street on Wooster Street. Steve, my boss said he thought that David's son was in day care at the WTC. I called David and was able to reach him, he said that everyone was safe but he had to force his way into the building before it collapsed because he thought Griffin and his mates were still in there. They had immediately been evacuated but he had no way of knowing that. I decided to stay at work until the bridges were openned but didn't want to be alone so I emailed a friend who lives at 84th Street on the east side of Manhattan - just across the east river from my home in Long Island City. I wrote an email to my friends and family with a description of the day's events, the staff made their way home to Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx. I left work around 4pm, there were no cars on the street and it was incredibly quiet. The smoke was blowing south west so it was surreal. I stood at the main library for a while and watched people - I remember in particular a very old man walking very slowly up Fifth Avenue aided by a younger man. I can't really describe the sense of the place. I heard a plane fly over and everyone looked up with fear. I made it to my friends house, we watched the television coverage. The next morning I made it home to my cat and watched more television. I was thankful that the coverage was sincere - everyone was so honest. It wasn't about selling anything. I stopped watching TV after several days because the tone changed and it didn't seem real or honest anymore. Tell us your story: SEPTEMBER 11TH 2001 A DAY I REMEMBER AND CAN NOT FORGET, I WAS IN NEW YORK CITY ON VACATION WITH MY PARENTS AND WE WERE DUE TO CATCH A RETURN FLIGHT TO LONDON HEATHROW AIRPORT IN GREAT BRITAIN WHERE WE LIVE. TRIPS TO NEW YORK CITY WERE LIKE A PILGRIMAGE FOR US, WE HAD TRIED CALIFORNIA BUT WE ALLWAYS CAME BACK TO NEW YORK, WE LOVED IT, IT WAS VIBRANT AND ALIVE AND THE BEST PLACE ON EARTH. EVERY TRIP WE TOOK WE ALLWAYS VISITED THE TRADE CENTRE AND SAT IN THE PLAZA AROUND THE FOUNTAIN. ON SEPTEMBER THE 10TH WE PACKED OUR BAGS READY FOR OUR TRIP HOME, AND ON SEPTEMBER THE 11TH WE HAD TO RISE FROM OUR HOTEL BEDS EXTRA EARLY AS WE HAD BBOUGHT SO MANY MATERIAL GOODS THAT WE HAD TO BUY MORE CASES TO GET THEM HOME. SHORTLY AFTER WE WERE ON A TRAFFIC ISLAND AND THERE WAS THIS ROARING NOISE, WE LOOKED UP AND SAW A LARGE PLANE AND WE LAUGHED AND JOKED SAYING WE WOULDN'T LIKE TO BE ON THAT PLANE, DIDN'T THE IDIOT KNOW THERE WERE LOT'S OF TALL BUILDINGS IN LOWER MANHATTAN. WE JOKINGLY SAID HE MUST BE A TRAINEE, AND HE WOULD SOON CHANGE COURSE WHEN HE SAW THE BUILDINGS DOWN THERE. NOW WHEN LOOKING BACK, THIS BRINGS ME FEELINGS OF SUCH GUILT, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE ON THE PLANE, IF WE COULD SEE THEM THEN OBVIOUSLY THEY COULD SEE US AND THEY JUST COULD NOT REACH OUT THAT SMALL DISTANCE TO GET THE HELP THEY SO DESPERATELY NEEDED. MY MOTHER ASKED ME THE TIME AND I SAID IT WAS AROUND ABOUT A QUARTER TO NINE ACORDING TO THE CLOCK ON THE BANK, WE DECIDED TO GO AND STAND OUTSIDE THE SHOP AND HAVE A CIGARRETTE WHILST WAITING, WE HEARD THIS ALMIGHTY BANG WHICH MADE US JUMP BUT THERE ARE ALWAYS LOUD NOISES IN NEW YORK AND WE BRUSHED IT ASIDE SAYING JOKINGLY THAT THE PILOT HAD PROBABLY FOUND THE BUILDINGS, WE DIDN'T EVEN FOR A MOMENT THINK THAT ANYTHING LIKE THAT COULD HAPPEN IN THIS PART OF THE WORLD. ON OUR RETURN TO THE HOTEL WE FINISHED PACKING AND CALLED FOR THE BELL HOP TO COLLECT OUR BAGS, WHEN HE CAME HE SAID THAT THEY WERE ON SHUT DOWN BUT WE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANT AND HE SAID WE WOULD NOT GET OUT OF THE CITY LET ALONE THE COUNTRY, WE DID NOT UNDERSTAND AND HE TOLD US TO STAY PUT AND SWITCH THE NEWS CHANNELS ON, I JUST SO DISBELIEVED HIM WHEN HE SAID THE CITY WAS UNDER ATTACK. WHEN WE VIEWED THE NEWS PICTURES I JUST COULD NOT COMPREHEND WHAT I WAS SEEING, IT JUST COULD NOT BE TRUE, BUT AS THE DAY WENT ON MY FEELINGS TURNED TO EVEN DEEPER AND DEEPER DESPAIR. MY SISTER NIECE AND BROTHER IN LAW WERE BACK AT HOME DESPERATELY TRYING TO GET NEWS AND WE WERE THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POND TRYING TO CONTACT THEM IT TOOK SO MANY HOURS TO GET THROUGH AND THERE WERE MANY TEARS AND MUCH ANGUISH EXCHANGED WHEN CONTACT WAS FINALLY MADE. IN THE DAYS THAT FOLLOWED WE WERE MOSTLY CONFINED TO THE HOTEL DESPERATELY TRYING TO GET A FLIGHT HOME, I SLEPT LITTLE IN THE FIVE EXTRA DAYS THAT FOLLOWED THINKING ABOUT WHAT HAD HAPPENED AND WHAT COULD POSSIBLY FOLLOW, WHAT ABOUT THE HOTEL, HOW SAFE WAS IT, WE WERE ON THE 22ND FLOOR,WHO COULD PROTECT US AND HOW WOULD WE GET OUT IF WE HAD TOO. WHAT ABOUT THE AIR THAT WE ARE BREATHING, ALL THIS DUST, SOME OF THE DUST HAD TO BE THE REMAINS OF PEOPLE THAT HAD BEEN LOST IN THE TRAGEDY. FOR A CHANGE I WAS CALM WHEN BOARDING THE FLIGHT HOME, THIS IS NOT LIKE ME, BUT WHEN IT CAME TO TAKE OFF I WAS HYSTERICAL, I DID NOT KNOW HOW I COULD FACE A SEVEN HOUR FLIGHT, I FELT SO TRAPPED. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in my office when a friend phoned and told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Like most everyone else, I thought it was some small plane, but was shocked when I turned on my TV to see the gaping hole on the north tower. I phoned one of my co-workers to alert her and ask her if she wanted to come see the events. Since I'm somewhat of a joker, she didn't believe me and told me that it wasn't funny. I finally convinced her and she came to my office to watch. Shortly thereafter we watched in awe as the second plane hit. My kids both live out of town, but I was able to be in touch with them via instant messaging over the computer. They were, of course, anxious to see if I was okay. I live in Long Island, which is a suburb of New York City, and I travel to and from work via a commuter train. All such trains were stopped, so I was unable to use them to get home at first. I went then to a nearby hospital with the idea of donating blood. When I arrived, there was already a five hour wait! New Yorkers were quickly taking positive steps in the face of theis tragedy. The trains began to run later in the day,so I was able to get home. I don't think I will ever forget the sound of sirens blaring as fire, police ans emergency heroes rushed to the site. Tell us your story: I make scrapbooks of holidays, everyday events in our lives, etc. This is the text that I wrote to include in my scrapbook to make note of September 11th, 2001. Text was originally written on March 11th, 2002. The morning of the attack, Tom, my husband, was working in Reading, PA, doing an audit at Godiva (a subsidiary of Campbell?s). As per the norm when he travels, I fell asleep with the TV on. I was home, still sleeping as I was not working yet, & having the most bizarre dream about Tom & me hiding in a FEDEX truck to avoid bombs. I woke up, listening to the Today show & hearing Katie Couric talking about an apparent terrorist attack, thinking that she was speaking about somewhere in the Middle East (I was still trying to recover from my dream), but I was curious, so I put my glasses on & looked to see what was going on. Then my jaw dropped as I saw smoke plumes coming from the Twin Towers & heard what happened?two jets hit each tower, & no sooner did I begin to absorb that did the next plane hit the Pentagon in Washington, DC. Seemingly, just as soon as I caught my breath (around 9:45 am), Tom called. Never had I been so happy that he worked for a boring, stable food company! He called to see if I knew what was going on (he knows my propensity for sleeping late), & the stream of expletives that came out of my mouth gave him his answer. I wound up on the phone all day, touching base with friends & family to assure them of both of our safety as well as checking to make sure everyone was accounted for. It was a day of reaching out & touching someone all the way around (even if no fences were mended), & I spent the next couple days sucked into watching the news coverage & trying to figure out how I could help. Not by simply writing out a check ? plenty of people were doing that in droves ? but what I could actually participate in. While listening to the radio, I heard that a WYSP in Philadelphia & their sister companies were coordinating a collection drive for Friday, September 14th. So, I went to the grocery store & took advantage of sales of non-perishables, such as NutriGrain Bars, & liquid soap & toiletries & all sorts of other items requested. I also cleaned out my closet & took out unused bandage supplies that I had tucked away. The donation drive was amazing. There were hundreds of people who came to drop off checks & supplies. People who came down to donate just didn?t want to leave! There were moving vans that were being loaded with supplies & driven directly up the NJ Turnpike into New York City (since no cars could get into the city) & the people who brought things to donate wound up overtaking the volunteers & filling trucks! I was there for an hour & five trucks were filled & heading up for the rescuers. I had a really hard time being alone that week. Every noise outside would make me jump, & there were sirens constantly (unusual with living in Marlton, NJ). On Wednesday night, I was chatting online around midnight with my friend Brian, who was a bit freaked out himself. He had just moved to NJ five months before. We were both alone & extremely jumpy, so I invited him to come down. We wound up drinking large amounts of alcohol & having a sleepover in our living room, & it was completely comforting. Tom came home on Friday, bearing a one-pound box of Godiva, pronouncing that he knew that I had a hard week on my own. I decided to concentrate on a different side of the tragedy than many folks did in their scrapbooks. There will be photographs & reproductions of news stories about September 11th for years to come. We live in a different world now, with heightened personal security in public places & a nation?s innocence lost. A documentary that started out about firefighters was shown on television last night where two filmmakers were inadvertently filming the events of the day as part of the original plan for the film. Some people thought such a film was distasteful. It was hard to watch, but I felt that it was necessary to watch. I *wanted* to feel the stab in my heart every time they showed the plane pierce the building, & I *wanted* to cringe at the ?thud? noise of people who chose that it would be better to jump from the towers than burn to death....because it reminds me of the horrific choices that some people in this world made, & why we, as a nation, need to be engaged in the war in which our soldiers are currently fighting. The day was beautiful, sunny and mild. I was listening to Bob and Tom on Q95 as usual. At about 7:45AM Indiana time, Bob interrupted the usual hilarious antics of their show with a report that an airplane had hit one of the WTC towers in NY. I thought at first it was a joke cause the Bob and Tom show is hardly ever serious. Then he mentioned that it was thought to be a small private plane that hit the building. I then thought it was an accident. Then fifteen minutes later as I was getting off the Interstate to proceed downtown to my office building, it was reported another plane had hit the other tower. Right then, I thought to myself "it is a terrorist attack, two planes hitting the WTC is just too much for coincidence". I went on to my office. I turned on our office television to watch the coverage then I tried to contact my boss who was to fly to Washington D.C. that morning for a leadership conference. I wanted to tell her all the planes had been grounded so she wouldn't be able to fly out this morning. I got ahold of her and she indicated she would stay put at home. Then I watched the coverage on TV for quite awhile. The towers getting hit, the towers falling, the Pentagon getting hit, the airplane that was reported to have gone down in Pennsylvania. At around 1:00 I left to go back home as my office building was located next to the AUL Building in downtown Indy. I was concerned that a plane might be flown into our city's biggest buildings. My family and I spent the rest of the day and the next days to come in unbelievable shock watching the next events unfold. Although we didn't know anyone personally who died or was hurt in these attacks, we prayed for those who suffered and died (and those who suffered the loss of loved ones). I awoke to the picture of a Tower at the World Trade Center in an inferno as a plane crashed into its top. I felt deep sadness for the horror of the incident and prayed for those in the tower and on the plane. Another mishap in the skies which would cost many innocent lives. Suddenly another plane appeared and crashed into the other tower. I screamed at the sight of this horror and terror swept through me as my adrenaline rose and my body felt a rush of heat. The news said terrorists and the malayse continued with reports of the Pentagon being hit and of another plane hijacked. Here on American soil? Someone actually had the means to attack New York City, Washington D.C. and another target sat in wait. Tears of deep sadness overwhelmed me. These were tears for the victims, tears for their families, and the greatest tears were for all of America. 2001 and we are not protected. How can this be? As the day unfolded, the horror grew and grew and there was nothing left to do but shiver with fear and weep for everyone and everything now ripped away from us. Still I was proud to be an American. I witnessed courage and bravery from every aspect of America. But what of this fanatic hatred? That these terrorists would hate so deeply that they would choose to kill innocent people and themselves was a thought more terrifying than the act. This evil seed of hatred was felt by us all. For any human to claim that they are creating such holocaust in the name of any God is a lie. These people do not represent any religion and they cannot disguise their evil through the veil of religion. 9/11/01 will always be one of the most horrible days of my life. With my sense of security gone, I awoke each day after afraid of what the day would bring. At the same time I believe that my mind went through a positive evolution. Now I think about how precious each day really is. I appreciate my life in freedom and liberty to chose what I want to do for a career, to embrace a religious practice that paralells my beliefs. I have gained a better understanding of these terrorists as well...you see people who only know oppression will fall into the mind control games of evil-doers. They will be pawns thrown away will no power or value. The terrorist mindset is immersed in tragedy, its foundation is hatred, and its future is destined for catastrophic failure. We, as people of this beautiful earth will only be rid of these monsters when we learn to love and respect all people. We can accomplish world peace and love with a beginning in each of our own communities. 9/11/01 is the catalyst for us to open our hearts and our minds to those around us who we can touch with brotherhood. I am currently a detective with the Raleigh Police Department. My son, not feeling well, was on the couch watching television. When the news broke he called me into the family room from the kitchen. At first I thought as many Americans did that maybe this was a terrible accident. However, when the second plane hit the towers I knew we were under attack. Being a police officer and having a military past I guess sometimes I always see the worst in things. I called my wife at work and told her to turn on the television and then we spoke on the phone as we continued to watch the television. When the first tower fell - I knew that hundreds of firefighters and police officers would be lost as well as the employees of those structures. I remember having the horrible feeling that I was helpless. I remember telling my son that OUR PRESIDENT would not stand for this and we were NOW at war. My son and I were glued to the television as all of the events of that horrible morning unfolded. My family had just recently taken a trip to DC and had driven by the Pentagon. My son talked about how we as Americans had been violated. Ever since that date he has spoken of his desire to fly jets for the military. He made me proud to be an American. I figured it was telemarketers. Then again, then again. I thought it was strange that the phone was ringing so much. When I got out of the shower I checked the caller ID. There was calls from my mother and my fiance. I called my fiance back first. He told me to turn on the TV. I turned it on in time to see both towers in flames before they fell. I called my mom back as I watched in horror. She asked me to call my brother and make sure he was at work and safe. I called him. He was. Then I called the school to check on my fiances kids. They were safe and school would not be closing. I just sat there. I forgot all the things I wanted to do that day. I called my job to make sure noone was on any flights that morning. We live in a flight path for the Air Force base. Ususally you hear planes quite often. I remember looking outside. It was so strange that not one flight was going over. That never happened. I was so dump founded. I don't think I really comprehended what was going on. I was absolutely mortified. I feel horrible for all the people who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Tell us your story: I was shopping with my youngest daughter, when a man came running into the store and said that a plane had just ran into one of the world trade towers, I amoung others said that wasn't a funny joke, he insisted that it was true, by then the second plane was there. I got into my car and drove to where I work (the local police dept) I ran inside they had the news on the t.v., it was true, I think for a few minutes I was in shock, I couldn't beleive it. Then the plane hit the Pentigon, and all I thought was I had to get to my children, they were in school. I went to the school and I made sure they were ok and made the decision to let them stay in school where it was "normal." I came home, when I got here,I found out that the plane had went down with all of the heros on it,then my mother called me and told me that my sister had been in a major car accident and had to be rushed to the emergency room, the cell phone had cut out and she didn't know anymore,s he couldn't get back thru. I tried calling to St.Petersburg, but all of the long distance lines were busy. I tried to log on to A.O.L. to see if any of my family members were on line, it took over 45 mins because the lines were busy. As I waited I prayed that God would protect everyone. By then the towers started to inplode,A.O.L. finally became free and I found out about my sister. She and my niece were saved by seat belts and were going to ok. My thoughts went back to those that were trapped in the building still, as I sat and watched the t.v. I prayed that they would find everyone in an area that had been saved some how. I went and picked up my children and hugged them tight, they had many question that they wanted answered. I tried the best that I could to let them know that everything was going to be ok. They wanted to know how someone could do something that mean. I explained that the person or persons that did this were mean and didn't have a heart. Today on the anniversary of Sept 11, my 8 year old son said, mommy they said they did this because of God, but God isn't mean, HE loves everyone. I explained to my son that they don't know our God and how HE loves, and how HE protects and how it says in the bible VENGENCE IS MINE SAYTH THE LORD. My heart goes out to the families of the people that didn't make it out of the buildings,or off the air planes and also to those that did, and are still recovering from that day. I will say this to you, beleive in a merciful God and a loving God, stand on His word, except Jesus Christ as your savior and you will see your loved ones again. I felt like you did that day, I had a loved one that I thought I had lost or could loose, and the feeling wasn't a good one, but I did put my faith in God and he pulled not only me but my sister and my niece thru also. I thought it was an accident, but then another plane crashed into the other tower. A plane crashed into the pentagon. I thought that has to be a mistake. No one could crash a plane into the Pentagon. A plane crashed in Pennsylvania. I could not believe it. I was very afraid. My family and I live near a nuculear power plant. Will they crash there next? I thought. I went home for lunch and turned on the TV. That is when it became real to me. I saw the smoke and the dust the fire. All the people. I cried for all the pain and loss. I realized that all of the innocent victims were just like me. They awoke to an alarm clock. Got up. Exercised. Showered. Woke up the kids. Made breakfast. Packed lunches. Got the kids off to school. Went to work. But they never get to come home. Never get to eat a delicious meal. Never get butterfly kisses from their children. Never get passionate kisses from the lover. Never get to read a good book. Never get to watch a scary movie. Never get to go Christmas shopping. Never get to play a game with their family. Never get to go on vacation. Never get to watch football. Never get to sing to the radio. Never get to dance. Never get to cry. Never get to say Good Bye. They will never be able to do any of the things I have done this past year. I am no different or better then they are. It is so unfair. Such a tragic loss because of hatred and evil. I will pray for them and never forget their suffering. I will pray for their families and never for get their loss or pain. I will pray for Our Leaders and hope that they will never forget this sad sad day in September. I will pray for Americans that they will never forget the lives lost on this day one year ago. I will pray for our children that they never forget and may someday live in World Peace and feel secure and safe in their homes again. Someday. Tell us your story: since the question "where were you on september 11, 2001?" has been posed over and over, i decided i'm gonna need to answer it someday. i might as well do it while it is still just yesterday. i can still remember where i was when princess diana died, and john jr, and walter mathau. i remember being at my grandma hall's house (she hadn't even started dating my future step grandpa, irv, yet) staked out in front of the living room television set. i still remember the feeling i had sitting in ms. robb's current event's class when i heard that mickey mantle had passed away. someday i need to write those things down. but right now i'm going to write about yesterday. i was wearing my pink, yellow, and purple button down camp shirt over top of a white tank top, and blue jeans. i was also wearing my white sneakers that give me blisters. if i can remember the clothes i was wearing on a day, it makes it easier for me to remember the day. so shut up and stop laughing. i still remember what i wore the first day of fifth grade. so there. so i worked the before school care at montessori from 7:30 to 8:30 this morning. came back and went to my CDV 115 (child growth & development) class in the performing arts centre on the verge of tears. i really wanted to be at home for miss vicky's funeral. i was having a tough time coming to the reality that that was not going to be an option (i did end up going). so i got into class and sat down at my usual seat, right up front. mary griffin (the prof/my advisor) came into class and asked me how i was doing today. she always asks me that. i think because its still early in the semester and i'm the only person she really knows. since all her other advisees in this class are still freshman and sophmores. so she asks me how i was, and just burst into tears. so she gave me a hug and generally fussed over me for a second or two. then we walked out into the hallway and she asked me what was wrong. so i told her that the mom of one of my best friend's had died. which was kinda of true, but not really. miss vicky was like a second mom to kristy, but i didn't need to go into details right then. i was having enough trouble talking as it was. then she walked me around the corner to her office. she gave me some kleenex, calmed me down for a minute, and told me that i didn't have to stay for class if i didn't feel like it. this was at 8:47 A.M., two minutes after the first plane hit. i happened to see the hallway clock on the way out. but being the good student that i am (or appear to be) i said that i wanted to stay. then she left me in there "until [i] was ready to re-join the class." so i calmed down and wiped my face off. and walked back into the room. we watched the "hello baby" video, the required video for like all intro child development classes (the one where they show you babies being born and everyone gets really grossed out and swears they'll never have children) at 9:04 A.M. (yes, i watch the clock religiously). then we break into groups to discuss the papers that we wrote over the weekend. and this girls comes flying into the classroom. and comes up to griffin. then she sits down with my group. luckily, as i find out. she was late because she was listening to the news on her radio. so i got to be one of the first kids in the class to know. she told us that apparently a plane had flown right into the world trade centre in new york. and then like a few (turns out it was about fifteen) minutes later another one did the same thing into the other tower right next to it. i was just kind of like oh, okay. it didn't even like sink in at all what a big deal this was. i didn't think anything of it. no one else, but the people in my group, knew anything about it. so no one was worried or talking about it. mary let us out of class a little early. on my way out she told me not to come to class on thursday, "the last thing [i] need is a test." and i need to be at home with my friends and family. tru dat. so i took advantage of the early dismissal, and hussled back to my dorm room to drop off the bulky course pack i was carrying around (read: 3-ring binder that didn't fit into my purse i was using as a book bag). when i walked in my new roommate, la'shawna, had the television turned on. she was like, "crazy isn't it." i wasn't thinking, but then it clicked and i was like, "oh, the two world trade centres." "and the pentagon" she added. i was like, "they got the pentagon too. damn." yup dumbass, they did. so then in flung the folder on my desk and rushed to my rst 220 (introduction to the hebrew scriptures) class. by the time i got there everyone knew about it. this kid ryan seemed to know the most, or maybe he was just talking the most. either way he said that people were saying it was a terrorist attack and they didn't know from who. and this girl courtney said something about "a no fly zone" but i didn't know what she was talking about, so i didn't really listen to her. ryan said something about there being planes that the FAA had lost track of, but i didn't know why that would matter. so oh well, then we had class. i didn't cry at all in there. i had to bite my bottom lip a few times, but no actual tears. in my noon class (gen 301 - the adult learner) we were supposed to have a speaker (sr. sharon from the dominican sisters on campus) come talk to us about something. but by that time of the morning the whole country was in shock and no one could concentrate on anything. we heard that another plane had attacked camp david. but as it turned out that was just a rumour, it really crashed somewhere in pennsilvania. melissa (the prof) had called a friend she had that works in the capital, and she could hear sirens blaring and people yelling over the phone. the girl that was sitting in front of me cried the whole time we were sitting there. melissa said sometihng about today being september 11th, as in 9-11. get it 911 (like the number to call in an emergency for those of you that don't know). then sr. sharon came in and told us that it was SUPPOSED to be like world peace day or something. yeah, that went real well. so the university already had prayer services planned, and a moment of peace at twelve o'clock. so we did that. then she tried to talk to us about some stuff, which i don't remember, and i doubt that anyone else does either. the blonde kid sitting at the end of my row (who i thought was cute...like on the first day of class) said something about osoma bin laden. but i don't remember exactly what. like maybe he was the mastermind guy behind all this. so the nun talked some more. then she gave up and we walked over to the t.v. lounge in ledwidge hall. we watched that for a while. then i had to leave for work. i went to my room and saw that it was only like one o'clock, so i turned on the television. i wanted to see how MTV was handling all this. but they (as well as VH1) were running live feed from CBS. so i watched that until it was time for work. when i went into work, i was told not to mention any of the day's events to the children. one of the kids, isaac, was wearing a shirt that said "washington d.c." on it and had a little picture of some of the monuments and such, including the pentagon. so we did our normal montessori after school stuff. when pam and peggy (my before and after school supervisors) came in, i told each one of them that i had a funeral to go to, so i wouldn't be back until friday morning. fine fine, sorry for your loss, etc... i went back to my room and watched some more news. by this time everything had already happened. all the planes had crashed, the towers had fallen. two other towers (building five and seven) were about to collapse. i think it was about six o'clock that building five collapsed. just as i was walking over to my six o'clock class in the science building. but before i got to my room i remembered that we were supposed to be in the library today. so i like flung over the sacred heart hall (where the library is) as fast as i could. then i got lost, then i found it. turns out since i already had two sources for my research paper, i was home free until seven o'clock. so i quickly walked back to my dorm room and called home. no one at home, no one at church. so i called mom's cell phone on a whim (she never leaves it on). she answered. so i told her that i was coming home and that i had permission from all my teachers to do so. okay, someone will be there to get me in about two hours. yahoo. somewhere in there i talked to dad too, i just don't remember when. i think it was in between class and work. i told him and he told me about what was happening back in wyandotte. apparently mom's school was in lockdown mode. whatever that meant. and mary griffin had called him to tell him what had happened in class today (remember from the beginning of this reeaaaaaalllly long entry...i cried about miss vicky) and that she thought it best i come home. so blah blah blah. dad needs my phone number. i don't have it. here's the number for the security office. okay. then my english class got out early because no one could think clearly. so i watched some more of the news. as did the rest of the school. any where you went was the sound of televisions reporting the events as they unfolded. dan rather (the CBS man) played a couple of tapes they had received from private citizens who happened to catch the events on video. lots of swearing, and an apology from mr. rather, ensued. apparently, as he repeatedly stated, the tapes had never been watched before they went on the air. there were fuck words all over the place. as you can well imagine people were in shock. i'm certain i would have had a similar reaction, had it been me. i can't even believe they would time it so all of america would be watching as the second plane hit. that just pisses me off. so dad came to get me. campus security wouldn't let him come to my room (even though he was wearing the "clergy collar"). there were security people at every opening to the campus. dad said he was stopped three times before he could even park the car. the entire country is freaking out. on the way home we saw crazy lines, ten and fifteen cars deep, waiting in line at gas stations. apparently there was a rumour of a gas shortage. dad kept saying, as did the radio man, "you people are creating your own gas shortage. this is just what the terrorists want, mass hysteria." tru dat. so we got home eventually. mom had locked the door because she freaks out easily, and she was home alone. then some more talking and boring stuff happened. then we went to taco bell and got one of their yummy quasadillas (definitely try 'em). then mary and tracey came over. mary is leaving for new orleans on the thirteenth. so darn on that. they stayed and talked for a while. then i went to bed. that was what i was doing on september 11, 2001...in detail. not that you really care. not that i care. but someday i just might. Pregnant with my second child at 40 (almost 41)years of age and suffering from gestational diabetes shakes and nausea from pregnancy. My husband Steve called and said he just heard on the radio at work that a plane crashed into the WTC. I had been watching the Today Show and saw it as it happened. While my husband was on the phone talking to me, the second plane hit. I couldn't believe it, it was surreal. We called family memebers to make sure everyone was OK. We went to our son Jamie's elementary school and brought him home. Not because we were afraid, but because we feared that he might catch wind of what was going on and he would be afraid. We just wanted to hug our son and be together as a family. I found out the next day that a coworker lost her sister in law in the Pentagon attack. We went to church on 9/12 and prayed. I have an old flag that belonged to my father and we decided that it was time to hang it outside everyday, not just on National Holidays. The flag is now worn and faded from the hot, Florida sun. Like my dad's flag, we Americans may be a bit worn and faded from the attack on the WTC and the Pentagon, but we are still free Americans and that will never change. God Bless America! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 for a Brazilian Firefighter. I?m a firefighter and I love my job, I work in a small town in Brazil. I get emotional and thrilled when we cross the roads, avenues, mountains and rivers to help, rescue, save and to protect the lives and property of people in distress. It is dangerous, sometimes sad, but I believe it is a privilege. I have done this kind of work for 15 years and it makes me feel fulfilled as a professional and as a human being. Edward Crocker, former Chief of the New York Fire Department, wrote in 1936 : ? For us, there is no greater ambition in the world than to be a firefighter.? I believe and agree with this very thing. I cannot remember who or how many persons I have helped, but I know each time I did it my heart beat happier and all effort was worthwhile when we could see a smile in the middle of pain and suffering, or fears of death being relieved because of our presence and prayerful support . I always wished to know the USA and USA firefighters . We have them as a model , we follow the techniques, tactics and technology from our North American counterparts in the US. In August 2001, I received an invitation from a friend who lives in Oregon , to visit USA. So I made the trip I always dreamt about. It was fantastic . Each city on the trip he showed me the fire departments and when I could hear a siren or see a fire car running it really thrilled me. In the end of August we went to the Washington, DC area, which was very special to me. We met firefighters from the Virginia Fire Department, visited the White House , Washington Monument, National Air and Space Museum, the Pentagon, and more. From there we went to New York City. I marveled at the beauty of the Statue of Liberty, and the architectural magnificence of the World Trade Center, never imagining that this would be my last opportunity to see it intact From NY we flew to London and then on to France. Our trip back to NY was planned for September 12 . When we were in Bordeaux, France on September 11, we received the shocking news : America under attack; World Trade Center and Pentagon targeted by airplanes! We were in a tour group of about 40 people, mostly Americans, but also several from other countries, including myself. Everyone was visibly shaken. My tears, prayers, doubts and questions were many: Who and why ? How many casualties? My friend wept and prayed at the same time. He had worked for the US Army in the Pentagon, in exactly the section that was burning after the plane crash. Places we had visited a couple of weeks before were now like scenes from a war . We saw the pictures on TV. I saw the firefighters' efforts trying to reach the twin towers to rescue survivors , going to face possible death themselves-- the firefighter's duty . I heard that almost 300 firefighters were missing. Thousands of persons perished. For me it was impossible to believe . It isn?t true! It is a bad dream! said the Americans that were with us. We needed go back to the US; we wanted to go, but some persons were afraid. Some advised us to return directly to Oregon, and not spend several days visiting NYC, as we had planned; or for me to return directly to Brazil. But we wanted to go. We had no fears. I wished to meet the heroic firefighters that were working there , and if I could help as a volunteer I wanted to do so . Our flight on American Airlines was not allowed to leave London , Heathrow Airport , until September 14, when US air space was reopened . The six-hour flight was sad and somber. When we left the plane the pilot and crew had tears in their eyes, instead of the usual smile, for good-bye . We were crying too. Not just tears from our eyes, but the heart was crying bitter tears . The memory of the black cloud of smoke over the city was printed indelibly in our minds. Three days after the tragedy there still were smoldering fires at Ground Zero, and the firefighters were working day and night trying to find survivors . We visited the place on Sunday, September 16. We talked with firefighters and showed our support, love, gratitude and admiration. They were proving the universal truth that "With God all things are possible." In Brazil we firefighters have a motto: "Para o Bombeiro o imposs?vel quem determina ? Deus." Roughly translated, it means that the only impossible things for a firefighter are the things that are impossible to God. And because we know that all things are possible to God, we never give up hope, even though others may say that a difficult rescue is not possible. Once, while working in my city in Brazil, I lost a co-worker, who perished when he was trying to rescue a 60-year-old man who had fallen into a dry well filled with gas fumes. It was the saddest day in our Fire department. Now, in NYC, I was with the firefighters that I always saw in movies, magazines and TV . The heroic NY firefighters . They were sad, having lost 300 colleagues but they were working night and day . The pain I felt in my heart was thick like the black smoke that covered the city . I wished to help. I wished to support them. I wished to do something--to volunteer to join them. (They were not accepting any more volunteers.) The people of New York and the entire USA, and a great part of the world felt the same . And the solidarity and support shown by everyone brought tears to my eyes--another lesson I will never forget. That day changed my life. I learned to know a country , to know my fellow firefighters , to know the American people in one of the worst moments of their history. I believe it is true that "Those who smile together become friends, but those who cry together become brothers and sisters." I cried with Americans, with my friend, with people on the streets, with the firefighters that I admire. Now we are a family and I?m proud about it. When I invited him to join me for a vacation in Washington, DC, New York City, and several countries in Europe, I never imagined that this would turn out to be one of the most emotional experiences of my life, but also an experience where a seeming tragedy becomes a blessing in an unusual way. On September 11, we were traveling in our tour bus heading for Bordeaux, France. At noon, when we stopped for a lunch break, our driver reported that he had just received a call on his cell phone, from his wife in Belgium, telling him that "America is under attack: New York and Washington, DC!" No further explanation at that time. Having worked in the Pentagon during the Cold War with the former USSR, my first reaction was to imagine that our worst nightmares of that era had become a reality somehow. I had visions of nuclear bombs and things like that. It was difficult to clear my thought enough to pray, knowing the truth that God is in control, and that his spiritual creation is always intact. We were not able to get any new information until we arrived at our hotel that evening, and could see the news on CNN. It was not a pretty picture! I was relieved, in a sense, to know that it was not a nuclear attack, but the impact was still devastating, and there was immediate need for prayer. I could not help shedding tears, but when I felt God's love surrounding all of us, including those directly affected by the attacks, I knew that in His kingdom, all was well, and harmony reigned, though it might not be apparent to mortal thought at the time. When I witnessed the true love and compassion expressed by the French people at the hotel, something changed inside me. For years I had always felt that the French people, in general, did not like Americans. Now I realized that this was a false sense, because I could feel their love. When I felt the hugs and tearful sentiments from members of our tour group from Australia and the Philippines, I sensed, once more, the brotherhood of man. When I saw the British flags at half-mast, upon our return to London, I knew full-well that most of the world was united with America in our hour of need. When I saw the selfless, brave acts of the firefighters in New York City, and the sincere desire of my friend from Brazil to be of help, to show his support and care, I felt deep pride for the privilege of being a "brother" to such true heroes. My life was changed! I remember sitting in the middle of my bed with my baby girl, who would be turning 1 in a few days, planning her 1st birthday party. We were watching her favorite TV shows when I got a call from my cousin. When I answered she immediately said,"Hey, did you know a plane crashed into the World Trade Center?" I couldn't believe it so I asked how did it happen? We both assumed it was some sort of accident. I also thought that she was refering to the World Trade Center here in New Orleans For some reason. It never occured to me that she was talking about the one in New York. I got real nervous because my mom is a mail lady and sometimes she delivers mail to the World Trade Center. So I called her on her cell phone but she didn't answer so you can only imagine how I felt then. In the meantime, I changed the channel to the news and they said it was the one in New York. I was kind of relieved in a way but still horrified because I couldn't believe that something like this would happen in our country. It was like something that was stolen right out of a movie. As I continued to watch the news, I watched as the other plain crashed into the other building. I cried in disbelief and fright. I grabbed my daughter and held her tight. Although she had no clue as to what was going on she wrapped her arms around my neck and held on tight. I then called my aunt to see if she heard from my uncle who lives in New York. She said she hadn't heard from him because their phone system was down. She assured me that he was ok because he lived in Long Island and although he works in Manhattan, he didn't go to work that day. My daughter's aunt also lived in Manhattan and we were worried about her and her husband. Her husband was actually stuck at work because they wouldn't let anyone leave for their own safety. He was working at the SOJO Grand Hotel. As I continued to watch the news, I cried out of anger while watching the kids in Pakastan rejoice in streets because of what they had done to us. I couldn't understand why they would teach their kids to hate for no reason at all. I kept newspaper clippings and I wrote down what happened on that day in a notebook to keep for my daughter. I know it may seem wierd but it just amazes me that once she starts high school or maybe sooner she will read about it in her History book just as I read about WWI, WWII & vietnam. My parents and grandparents can remember and tell stories about what happened then so maybe when she gets older she'll have questions for me about what happene on 9-11. I'll never forget that day for as long as I live. Even though it didn't affect me directly it has definitely taken a toll on me and they way I live my life. My heart goes out to all of the families who have suffered a lost due to this tragic event. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was taking a test in my business class at college when my class was informed about the attack. Everyone was in a state of disblief. The instructor dismissed class, and students crowded into the jymnasium to watch the happenings over the television. While watching the news coverage, the full impact of the tradegy hit me as I realized that there were individuals that were in agony who had loved ones in the trade center, and that it might be some time before they knew weather they were alive or not. I began weeping and praying with the other students. I was surrounded by grieving and dissbelieving students. Throughout the day, we continued to stay together and pray. Many of us became aware of how precious and uncertain life is. What I have learned from this tradegy is the renewed awareness of how very fragile and uncertain life is. I have become newly grateful for my family and friends--I have renewed faith in the general goodness of my fellow neighbors and have begun an ongoing effort to show love, help and support to everyone who comes into my life. Sept.11th will forever remain in the memory of the american people. The positive outpouring of love and support will forever remain with all of America as we continue to remember, grieve and support the families of the Sept.11th attack. Hopefully, with renewed awareness of the need to reach out to one another, America will grow in their strength and love for their fellowman. I did not personally know anyone who lost someone in the attack. I wanted to write this to let anyone who reads it know that I love them, and in the hope that they will gain some small comfort from it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I still remember when I heard about the Pentagon at work. I tried to call my best friend Jamie. We had been best friends for 11 years. She was in the Navy and was stationed at the Pentagon. I tried calling her office all day. The phones were all out of order though. I was a nervous wreck at work that day and got absolutely nothing accomplished. After work, I called Jamies parents and thats when her sister told me that the plane had hit right where her office was. Jamie left behind a beautiful son who was 7 months old when she passed away. I will never forget my best friend in the world or the times we shared together. She was always there for me and we had grown up together. I miss her everyday and will always love her very much. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was home from work on a maternity leave. My son was born on August 14th. I was getting my five year old on the school bus while my husband (who was home sick)was watching the news. He suddenly yelled out, "a plane just hit some building in New York". I ran in and we watched the events unfold. It was extremely surreal. We spent the day tuned in to all the updates. We thanked God we were safe and mourned for those who lost their lives. It truly seemed unbelievable that such a thing could happen here, and yet it did. We continue to pray for the heroes and think about them every day. God Bless America.
