It hit me later on , how many people this act of terrorism hurt when I was at Arlington national Cemetery last March. My mother is buried in Arlingto. She passed away only 2 years ago and I miss her very much. As I stood at her grave with my personal thoughts, I looked over my left shoulder and saw the reconstuction efforts at the Pentagon nearby. The plane that hit the Pentagon had flown over the grave of my beloved mother, a woman who never hurt anyone and sacrificed much for the love of her country. I realised how so many innocent people were killed or somehow damaged on that day. There is a quote from William Saroyan's play, The Time of Your Life, that should fit how each one of us needs to live our lives: " In the time of your life, live, so that in that good time, you shall not add to the misery an suffering of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it." As I looked to my right I saw the smoke billowing above the Pentagon, and time stood still... Earlier that day, I called to NY frantically to see if my best friend was okay. I finally got through to her father who confirmed she was alive, but not well. When I talked with her before leaving Lanham, she told me that our high school friend who worked in the Towers was missing... He hadn't checked in for 3 hours after the buildings came down, and that was very unlike him. We feared the worst, and it was the worst. Our tight circle of high school friends was broken. Tell us your story: On September 11th i was on my way to school, my mom was driving me to school and i heard on the radio that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. At first my mom and I thought it was on accident but then when I was at school everyone started to tell my teacher about what happened.They heard that another plane had crashed into the the other Tower a little bit after the first one crashed. After the second plane hit we knew that it wasn't on accident anymore. Nobody knew what was going on everyone was scared that something was going to happen to the Sears Tower in Downtown because the Sears tower was one of the biggest towers in America. Some kids were really upset because they had parents that worked there. Then we heard about the plane that crashed into the Pentagon luckily many people didn't die from that attck. But when everyone heard about it,parents starting taking their kids home from school because they were scared. Finally it was the end of school and everyone went home. SOme of my friends came over adn we watched the news to find more about the attacks and see if anything else had happened. They showed on T.v when the second plane hit the Tower and they showed the poeople running away screaming. It was just a terrible thing to watch. My mom was downstairs crying and trying to reach my sister to see if she was ok because at the time of the attack she had been living in around the New York City area and she didn't know if she was working around there. The people had discovered who was flying the plans and they were Afgan people who they found out were speacially trained to fly plans into the Towers. They had then figured out that they were helping a man named Osama Bin Laden. Everyone was so upset and angry at Bin Laden for killing all their relatives and so many people. The president had sent many military poeple to look for Osama Bin Laden. It was a really bad thing. Now it is a year later and they are still looking for him. Hopefully they find him before he makes another attack and makes us relive September 11th. Noone will ever forget that day. It will stay in our minds and hearts forever. Tell us your story: I had lived for six years in the shadow of the Trade Center - there frequently to take visitors to the roof observatory or to use the Path trains underground. My apartment faced the WTC, and it was usually the first thing I saw in the morning. The sun would often turn it all manner of stunning color. I used it as a frame of reference no matter what part of the city I was in. It was the one thing you could see from everywhere to help you get your bearings in such a huge metropolis. On the morning of September 11, 2001, I drove to work as usual. As I was pulling into my office's garage in Kansas City the DJ on the radio mentioned that a plane had just struck One World Trade Center. At the time, I was visualizing a small passenger plane of some sort. But I ran up to my office and turned on the television to see the black smoke billowing high. I was watching live as the second plane hit, and then as each tower fell. The surreal scene immediately caused me to close my eyes in anguish. I called my mother and cried for all of the people I knew were there - probably many of the same people I had watched go to work over there during my years in the city, wondering if any of my friends happened to be there for some reason. I started e-mailing my best friend in Brooklyn Heights who had been watching the entire thing first hand, seeing people jump to their deaths and the horrible impact of the planes. We consoled each other via e-mail for a couple of hours, trying to make ourselves believe that things would be okay. The day was so unsure - there was no way to feel safe. Even buildings in Kansas City were being evacuated ... no one knew what was going on or what would happen next. For weeks I listened to the news constantly - wondering when and where the next strike would occur. Having this day roll back on the calendar brings back my tears and my feelings for this time last year. This world is a mess, and I pray that God bring civility and sanity to it. My Government class, PAF101 was where I heard the horrible news that would shape the rest of my day and the rest of my life. The bell had rang to start class at 9:35 AM, just as it had before, and nothing felt out of the ordinary. I had no idea that less than 200 miles from me, the world's strongest symbols of hope and prosperity were aflame. My teacher came storming into the room, like she never had done before. we had only been in school the better part of two weeks, but I knew that even a new, nervous teacher shouldn't have been behaving so erraticly. She had always told us she liked playing practical jokes, so it came as no surprise and actually brought a smile to my face when I heard "Two planes just crashed into the World Trade center in New York." Students laughed. One student actually stood up and told her she was full of it. Until we turned the TV on. There they were, the two most beautiful buildings on the East Coast, pouring smoke into the warm morning air. Pens dropped, skidding chairs halted. The laughter stopped. Tears began to streak across even the strongest of faces as we watched, in utter horror, as Tower 2 of WTC collapsed, on live televison. Cursing, crying, and remarks about Arabs were being thrown like rapid-fire dodgeballs inthe gym class I had just come from as the pillar of smoke that had once been one of the Twins spread over the city. My teacher left the room to recover the tape of the attacks before the administration could lay their paws on it. She came back in seconds later: "The Pentagon has been hit," she told us. That did it for many. If they hadn't been scared out of their minds, they were then. Waiting for a plane to drop onto us, we watched the fuzzy television closely, staring at the lonely brother against New York's smoky skyline. It was about that time the deans came into the rooms and announced all taping of the gut wrenching event would be destroyed and teachers doing so or harboring those who did so would be reprimanded. It didnt make any sense to me. People were dying, many of which were friends, colleagues, and FAMILY members of those who were at my School, and all they could think about was what we were being subjected to? We were getting a sour taste of life. Our teacher locked the door and turned the TV up, allowing students shunned in other areas to come and watch the day unfold. The bell rang. Nobody moved. A teacher (my other teacher, it so happened) was seen running across the parking lot of the school, hysterical beyond belief. Her future son-in-law, fiancee to her daughter, worked in the World Trade Center. I watched out the window as teachers pulled her, screaming, back into the building. The day slowly, ever so slowly, moved on. I only had a half day (I didnt take a full day of classes since most of mine were college courses) and was on my way home shortly after noon. I turned the radio on in my car, and of course, any channel I turned to was the same: "WTC collapses, thousands dead." The TV that night was the same, non-stop coverage. I saw the planes hit, again and again, knowing full well that the reprocussions were serious. Off I went to work for 6 o clock at a local drugstore. I had my first three customers say absolutely nothing at all, even seeming rather pleasant. I began to wonder if I had experienced it, yet the rest of the world hadn't. Until I had one customer drop his money due to the shivers he was having. "I'm just shook up at what happened this morning," he said honestly, cradling his child in his other arm, holding her tight as not to let her become part of the world's insanity. It was the first night my manager had ever allowed the TV to be turned on in the breakroom. We all watched, again and again, as the horrors of September 11th unfolded in front of our eyes, burning into our brains and leaving scars time could never heal. People were talking about a plane having crashed into the WTC. The radio was on in the background (The Tom Joyner show). Everyone was talking as if it had been a small, recreational plane that had had an accident. Then people online started talking about a 757. I thought they were crazy and I went to another women's chat room. But the same dialogue was happening there. I turned on the television and saw what was going on. But the screen went to snow after a few minutes b/c I did not have cable. My reception was coming from the antenna on top of the WTC. That's when I got scared. I went back online and asked if anyone knew of an all-news AM station in NYC. I grew up here and have lived here most of my life. But I was so scared at that point that I couldn't even remember 1010 WINS or something else that I had heard all my life. A few minutes later I ran outside and talked to my neighbor on the street. He's an older man and he's so sweet to me. He hugs me and gives me a kiss on the cheek every day. He confirmed that everything I had heard on TV and the radio was true. Somehow his confirmation made it all real. My other neighbors pulled up in front of the house next door just as I was returning home. They had been downtown and had made it out by car just in time. He had just offered to drive her to work that day--out of the blue. The second plane hit a minute or two after she got out of the car. She just jumped back in and they made it over the bridge and back home to Harlem. I watched it all on TV with them as the towers fell. I'll never forget those moments as long as I live. I couldn't stop thinking "What about the people? All those people..." i was in shock. I didn't even know until days later that two people I knew had not made it out of Tower 1. I still think about the people and their families often. I lost my parents when I was younger. So my heart aches for them. I hope they find peace. It's possible, but it takes a long, long time. Kersch when a boy in our class named Ricky walked in and said, "A plane just hit the World Trade Centers in New York City!" My teacher Miss. Kersch turned on the television to CNN and we watched it for the rest of that class period. In my Earth Science class, we all saw was a plane crashing into one of the World Trade Center buildings. As the whole world was concentrating on the World Trade Centers another plane hit the Pentagon. Then all of the sudden out of nowhere, the south tower of the Trade Center collapsed. A few seconds later, the north tower collapsed. After all this happened, the wall on the Pentagon collapsed. That day I was really sad because my cousin works in the United States Treasury at the Pentagon. That day she was supposed to work in the same place where the plane hit the Pentagon. Luckily that day she was rescheduled to work in a camp in Washington D.C. away from where the Pentagon was. Another thing I saw on the television was a family. A wife, daughter, and sister were looking for a man. They searched all over for him. They kept going back and forth past the where the World Trade Centers stood. All of a sudden, the daughter screamed, "DADDY!" and she sprinted over to him and gave him a huge hug. I thought it was heroic for all the man and women who went to New York City to help with the clean up. It was also sad because they had to leave their families for days, weeks, maybe even months. I will always be praying for those families who have lost loved ones and friends. I will always remember that significant day on which the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon was attacked! We all ran to the breakroom and turned the TV on just in time to see the replays and watch as the second plane hit. Then we heard a 3rd plane had hit the Pentagon. My boss was at a business meeting just a few blocks from the Pentagon so we spent many anxious hours until he called to let us know he was alright. One of our coworkers had a daughter who worked near the WTC. It made a tremendous impact on all of us and made both New York and Washington seem so much closer. Being near to Fort Bragg made it even more surreal as we kept hearing the jets and helicopters passing overhead. We spent the remainder of the day trying to work but drawn to the TV to watch it unfolding. Just today the hospital had a memorial service on the front lawn. As we all stood watching the maintenance crews display an enormous flag from the roof of the building that fell over 5 floors. It was hard to believe a full year had gone by and I think everyone in the crowd ran the full gammet of emotions from disbelief to rage to alnost overwhelming sorrow. Some people were hurt more than others, but everyone was hurt in someway. on September 11, it was a normal day for me, waking up and going to school. After a few minutes in homeroom, my homeroom teacher told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Towers. I thought it was a freak accident at first. when a plane had hit the second tower, I knew there was something wrong. When I got home I found out that a plane crashed in Pennsylvania and another into the Pentagon. later, I found out that all these planes were hijacked. I was shock; i never knew anything like this could happen. the next morning, when I watched television, I heard more about the World Trade Center. I found out that thousands of people died in the building. I was terrified when I heard that policemen, firemen, and even innocent bystanders were killed by falling debris. Their intention was to try and divide the United States, but we have been able to pull ourselves together from that tragic day. We were able to reunite amongst ourselves. this is now one of the most pratiotic days of the year. People all over America have put up flags and posters saying, "United We Stand," in every corner. this day is so important that even other countries have joined in to remember this day. it is even acknowledged before basball games. this day is surely one that will never be forgotten. In conclusion, these are my memories from the most tragic day that has ever accured during my life. I'll be honest I didn't think it was real. But through the day I would obviously change that idea. I just couldn't and still can't believe all those people died. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, friends, and coworkers. I felt so disgust at that, that I wrote something in the local paper. I just couldn't believe that the world would come to this. I kinow that it has been a little over two years since that horrible day. Some people have resume their lives and some will livwe with this for the rest of their lives. They had something ripped from them. I think we all did, even if some of us didn't lose a love one. I personally didn't lose alove one but I did lose that security that I always felt here. I'm not saying that the whole world needs to go out and hold hands and sing "come together" but I do think that if we just stop thinking about how we can get revenge. The world doesn't have to be a cartoon, What about all that stuff when Sept.11 happened afterwards we all came together,we need to do that always. I will always have every person who died in my prayers. Let's change are attitudes and look in ourselves and know that we can't change in a day but we can change. If we are all willing to do so. On September 11, 2001 I was in my last semester of Nursing school and going about a typical Tuesday morning, performing my clinical hours at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St.Francis Campus, in Wichita, Kansas. One of the hospital physicians came onto the unit, an oncology unit, and told us the World Trade Center had just been hit by an airplane. Shocked and concerned, we rushed to the medication room, where we turned on a radio, only to hear more terrifying news. An explosion of unknown source had just occurred at the Pentagon. At that moment, I feared great trouble for our nation, and for my family. I knew we had major trouble on our hands. The news continued only to get worse over the next several hours as I cared for my patients and tried not to show my fear and sadness. I couldn't wait to get home to my family. We were all glued to the television in the following days and weeks. I spent time with my family and began to look at life and liberty a little differently than before. I realized how I had taken for granted my safety and believed that acts of war only happened on foreign soil. I was very proud however, of our President...George Bush, for his actions and words of comfort to our nation. I marveled at his courage and ability to recognize our need to hear about God. He didn't for one minute worry about how some may view his discussions, which openly talked about the Lord and His presence in and with our nation. It has been a year now, and I do feel safe in America and I continue to admire all of our leaders. I love my family as I always have, but I make a point to tell them more often, and I encourage patriotism in my children. All of those lives were not lost in vein. Tell us your story: I lost someone very close to me on september 11th, Hi, My name is Moran and I'm from tel aviv, Israel, The first I've heared about the crash I couldnt believe my eyes, to see a plane crash in the world trade center, who would of believed, I didnt know what to think or what to do, I lost someone who was like a mother to me, she was a special woman because she always stood by me no matter what, I still cant believe she is gone... I never taught she will be there but a couple of days later i tried to call and there was no answer and only about a week and a half later I saw her picture on the cnn website, and that's when it hit me, that she is gone, I couldnt stop crying when i saw her name and a day after I saw her picture too. I didnt know what to do, I wanted to go to new york so much just to say my last goodbye but I unfortunately i cant afford it now, all i wanted to say is the last goodbye and to tell her how much i miss her. I remember seeing it in unbelief. I honestly said to myself, "planes aren't meant to fly that low." Then the word L-I-V-E popped up on the screen. In the pit of my belly I felt the worst turn that has ever been there. U.S. soil hadn't been such a breeding ground for outside attack. It was similar to the Columbine shooting, but the deaths were more numerous and hit harder at home. Life can be snatched away in such a quiet moment. Imagine being at your desk, standing in an elevator, or walking down a hall and you see this enormous grey object coming directly towards or feeling the steel of your fragile surrounding bend inwards from impact. We can't imagine the terror that ran in those delicate moments of those HEROS lives. God Bless them, I'll never leave your children, wives, and husbands out of my prayers. As I went to my first class, which happened to be history with Mr. Herzig, we did completely normal activities and normal work, and no one had absolutely any idea what was about to happen that day. I then went to my second class of the day, one of the most boring; chemistry. After we got about fifteen minutes into the period, Dr. Smith came onto the PA system and had told us that there had been plane crashes in both New York City, and in Washington D.C. At that time, the entire school turned on their televisions in horror to find out that middle-eastern terrorists had hijacked planes and deliberately crashed them into the Pentagon and both of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Everyone was so shocked that they stopped what they were doing to find out anymore information that may have been recovered. All of that horrible information that was given at one time resulted in everyone not doing anything for the rest of the day. As the day continued, there were so many emotions going on at one time. We watched as the news anchors from every news channel reported for hours and hours, trying to uncover more information. Meanwhile, the phone bills in D.C. and New York were off the charts with people trying to call their loved ones to make sure they were alright. A fellow student of mine was very upset because both his parents work at the Pentagon, and was trying to call them, but they were alright. That night my family and I drove to D.C. to see the Pentagon. September 11th is a day America will never forget. I was on vacation in Southern Florida, and in the morning of September 11 we (my friend Ulli and me)were on our way to Orlando. Our driver received a call from his wife (she didn't know if he was in New York or wherever) asking if he was Ok. We switched on the radio and heard about a plane having hit WTC. Minutes later there were just screams and finally we could understand that a second plane had hit...it became obvious it couldn't be an accident. We stopped at St.Petersburg. Everybody kept asking if we had already heard the terrible news and everbody told us different stories about what had happened. In a hotel lounge we saw the first tower crumble, together with people from all over the world, bartenders, hotelmanager etc. We continued on to Orlando because we didn't really know what else to do, most of the day we stayed glued to the TV. We tried to reach our parents and friends, but couldn't get through. There were only short messages coming in, asking if we had heard, if we were Ok, what we knew... It was scary to be trapped in a country at such a time, not knowing what would happen next, if Bush would strike back, when we could get a flight back home, etc. But on some absurd level I'm grateful I have been there since it helps me to understand the spirit of that nation. Americans found so much strength in singing their Anthem and in waving flags proudly. I didn't learn that when I was growing up, but it is something I envy Americans for. In September 2002 both of us returned to the USA- New York City. We visited Ground Zero, a shiver still running down our spines. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, they will never be forgotten. The following poem I found at the fence of St.Paul's Cathedral: "Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am a diamond glint in snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. Many questions were asked, very few answers available, and a load of anger and guilt setting in. I then began to think that if it were me who had died from the events on September 11th and I had one last chance to leave a message, I would want everyone to continue on without sorrow and guilt, to live their lives to the fullest and never give up trying. Tell us your story: I was sitting my my 7th grade call and the principle can over the intecom and said "there has been a horrible thing happing the TWIN TOWERS have been hit by terroris" I could hear the terror in his voice. At that point in time my teacher started to cry. Not many of the students knew what the twin towers were. I knew what they were. My autnt went there all the time and i was afraid that she was there and i started to cry. Then i rembered that my stepmother has realtives who live innyc and some ever worked in the twin towers. When i went home that day i called her and asked her if she knew if my 2nd aunt was okay. She started to cry and said she doesnt know. about 2 weeks went by and she called and she said that she was alright but only beacuse this one hero who help my aunt. I was in class with several of my friends, and there was always this man who dressed up very professional. Always wore suits and very business like. That morning we were reviewing for a test and we heard a cell phone ring. The man in the business suit answered and jumped up and began to grab his things. Everyone was looking at him as if he were nuts and all he said was sorry, I have to go, the World Trade Center has just been bombed or something. Of course my friends and I were like whatever, he just wants to get out of class. After class we were walking to our cars and passed the student lounge which usually was empty at that time. The lounge was packed with people, and the t.v. was on full blast. There were students crying, some angry, some concerned, some confused. As for my friends and I we were ashamed and sad. If I hadn't been having a radiation treatment at NYU Medical Center, I would have been walking through the World Trade Center at 8:30 AM on September 11th. I live one block north of the Trade Center in Tribeca, and I worked in the World Financial Center across the West Side Highway from the Trade Center. There was a series of escalators and pedestian bridges between my apartment and my office - all part of the World Trade Center complex and a short cut to get to work. My cat was rescued by the ASPCA on Friday, 9/14, but I couldn't return for 3 weeks, and then only to get some clothes. We were evacuated for 8 weeks and when we returned it very surreal. Construction workers, police and firemen everywhere, all the time. Jet fighters overhead day and night. Tourists still ask if we have a public bathroom in our apartment building and re-construction is slowly taking place but the memories are still fresh and painful. Friends and family outside NY can't really imagine what it was like to have such an event take place in my backyard. This is my World War II - an event in my life that changes everything, forever. My mornings are usually spent carting kids, bookbags in hand, to school or preschool. September mornings in St. Louis are beautiful with their crisp air and blue skies. Back in September of 2001,life in our suburban home wasn't perfect, but it was everything I'd ever hoped for - a family of my own, a kitchen table in a warm sunny room, food on our table, warm beds at night, a garden in the yard - everything was comfortable, safe. Our kitchen was in the middle of renovation with nothing but some wires and pipes and the micorwave cart holding a small television occupying it. The morning of September 11th, I rushed the kids out the door, repeating " We're late, let's go, come on". I quickly dropped them off at school, which is only 2 blocks away, then headed toward the preschool to drop off my youngest and his buddy. As I walked through the doors I noticed alot of moms standing around watching CNN on the large television that hung from the ceiling in the hallway as you enter the building. These are usually broadcasting "Welcome" messages to the visitors and students. After dropping off the boys, I made my way back to the television and said my goodmornings to the other moms. No one answered. I stared up at the television in disbelief. One of the World Trade Center towers was gushing black smoke. My first thought was- what a horrible accident. Then as we stood listening to the updates, we watched the 2nd plane slam through the other tower. Horror swept through my being. This was no accident. My heart was pounding so loud and hard, I was sure everyone could here it - if not for the sounds of their own hearts racing. Tears started trickling down my cheeks as I began to realize what was happening. On television, at that very moment, all around our world, people were watching their loved ones perish. The wives, husbands, children, grandparents who left their homes that morning, never to return. No second chances to say goodbye or I love you. Suddenly, I thought to myself, "did I kiss my husband goodbye this morning?" Why did I rush my children out the door, and did I kiss them before leaving them for the day? As the first tower came crashing down, a sick feeling overwelmed me. What was happening to the America that I loved? We were under attack - on our own soil, by an unknown attacker. The second tower crashed as we stood there holding hands, not wanting to believe what we were watching...hoping to wake up and find it was all a bad dream. The director of the preschool asked if we would like to move into the lunch room and say a prayer for those involved. We stood there around a lunch table, 10 or 11 moms holding hands, tears streaming down our wet faces, hearts heavy with sorrow, praying for everything - the victims, their families, the people of New York, our families, just the strength to carry on with our day. It was as if the sorrow and pain in my heart was so heavy, it was waying us down, physically draining our beings. The rest of the day was spent on a folding chair in my torn up kitchen watching CNN and praying. When I picked up my children later that day, the tears cam again as I hugged and kissed them - to their embarassment - in the middle of the parking lot, no longer taking anything for granted.
