Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was September 11th, 2001. I was then a 13 year old in grade 8. I went to school having no idea what the WTC was, or that these terrorists were so hateful. During our first break which was at 10:30. I remember seeing two of my teachers sitting in their car which must have been listening to the radio. We, the students, still had no idea what was going on, even though the teachers did. The teacher remained to act like nothing was happening. Didn`t even let us know something happened. While I was out on my lunch break, one of my friends came back from lunch and told me what had happened. I was ever so confused. I just heard that terrorists were attacking the U.S. I was so scared. I ran and asked my principal for some details. I wanted to know what was going on. All my principal told me was that planes had hit the towers and everything will be okay. I countinually asked and asked him questions forever and he would answer them with 3 word sentences. I wanted someone to sit down and explain this to me, because I had no idea why the planes had been aimed to the towers. Why the towers? Why are the terrorist Afghans? Why are they doing this to us? It wasn`t until I got home that night that my mom had to sit down and explain everything to me. Once I actualyl found out what happened, I was so mad that my principal and teachers had totally avoided the subject. The next day I went to school and after hearing nothing about it on the daily announcments or from anyone, I decided to stand up for what I thought, and I went down to the principals office and let him know that he should reconize what happened to these people. Stand in silence and remember these people. Explain to the confused students what is going on. Give thanks to the firefighter`s who are down at ground zero right now trying to save lives, and cleaning up the mess so we can countinue with our lives. I was so proud of what I said to my principal because after I said that, he made a very great announcement that reconized all the grateful people who were on the planes, and who were at ground zero and who were in the towers. We also stood in silence to remember those who lost their lives. I wanted to share this with you because I think that even the little toddlers and the children should have every single detail told to them about September 11th. Even the gorey details about the people who lost their lives. This is very important. Kid`s need to know what`s going on in their society!! Thank you. I just happened to be off that day. I remeber waking up that morning and flipping the T.V. on to the news. I sat there staring at the T.V. wondering why they were showing old footage of the World Trade Center boming from a few years earlier. Then I realized that it wasn't old footage and that two planes had flown into the towers. I couldn't believe it. A few minutes later my telephone rang. It was work. They wanted me to come into work immediatly. It took me a while to get there, but when I did it was a very strange atmosphere. I was cryng, everyone around me was crying and there was something huge missing from San Fransisco International Airport.....there were no airplanes taking off or landing...It was very strange. In the days that followed, it was so difficult to go to work and hear nothing, no jet engines.....It was a difficult time for all of us. Days later the first United airplane landed at SFO and I was there to meet the flight. As the plane taxied to the gate the co-pilot oped his side window and put out and American flag and began waving it. I cried so much, but it was wonderful to see that plane at SFO. I went up the jetway and greeted the passengers as the got off the airplane, some cried, aome said thank you and other just didn't know what to do or say. I bought a cup of coffee from a cart. Were looking at the Twin towers when we saw the first plane. I commented to Lisa that I thought the plane was flying pretty low. Then it went straight into the building. The sound of the impact was like a sonic boom. Lisa said that it must of been that the pilot had a heart attack. At first, the flames coming out of the building seemed to be confined to 2 or 3 floors from our vantage point. We could never imagine that it could collapse as it did later. When the second plane hit, I felt that it must be terrorist. For two planes to hit both buildings within a few moment could not be coincidence. The police directed everyone to walk uptown. Lisa and I were shaken as we made our way to Houston St. There we stopped to rest. At that moment, the first building collapsed. We could not fatham it. The whole experience was surreal. I have put off relating this for a while. Even after almost a year, tears come to me and my wife, Lisa. I heard the whining of its engines as it decended and slowed so that it may hit its mark. I remember the fear that I felt and the New Yorker(by address) in me saying "You're too cool to run and look up. Everything's fine-you're afraid of your own shadow.". It's true. I was afraid of everything in this city of fear and threat. So I ask the girl watching next to me what it looked like coming down.She said that it went right over the Washington Square arch. I called my husband, who was on location in Chicago, and told him that the strangest thing just happened. Then I walked to work and tried to pretend that everything was ok. 15 minutes later I heard screams and gasps from the crowd on Fifth Avenue. I turned around to watch the second tower explode. MY dad usually takes me to school every morning but today he was on the couch watching the T.V. I wondered what he was watching and I saw a building on fire. He told me it was the twin towers and a plane had just crashed into it. What was weird, was that my aunt all the way in Hong Kong saw this before us and called my dad and told us what had just happened. IN all of my classes the t.v. was on. We got nothing done and all we talked about the horrific attacks. He related that a plane had crashed into the WTC. Several minutes later television programming was interrupted by a news broadcast with a live pick-up from NY. (I knew the WTC quite well. Only a month before I had used the PATH terminal.) It was hours before regular TV broadcasts would be resumed. I worked in disaster response for many years. I picked up the telephone and contacted a friend in Brooklyn, a chaplain for NYPD. He spoke from his mobile phone. He was caught in traffic on the Upper Giwanis. That conversation was the last that I would have with New York for about 24 hours. A busy signal was received. Lines were down and / or overladed. On Thursday my friend asked that I come to New York to aid Jewish organizations after the disaster. One of those organizations would fund the trip. The first flights from Israel to New York left on Saturday night, but there was no space available. I contacted a friend at Royal Jordanian Airlines. He called El Al and made a reservation for me. (I knew that the Israeli carrier would not turn down their Jordanian counterpart.) I was off to New York. I just turned on the NBC Morning Show when Katie Couric announced breaking news "one of the WTC towers has been hit by an airplane". My jaw dropped. I was just at the WTC the year before. I hugged my son and became angry. I thought "what a horrible accident". I wanted to know who was responsible. Katie Couric began an interview with a caller close to the WTC and displayed a live picture of the burning tower. The woman on the phone was describing the plane as a large commercial airplane and it didn't make sense. How could it be? Her voice became histerical she started to scream "oh my god, another one!! I am a former journalist, editor, and teacher; I had retired from those jobs to become my sister's business manager in 1997. On Sept. 11, 2001, I was soundly asleep in my apartment, a small two-story carriage house behind my sister's office. The phone rang, and it was my sister, Barbara N. Conner MD, a geriatrician in practice in Hallettsville, TX. "A plane just hit the World Trade Center," she said. "Go turn on TV." Tell us your story: On my drive into work, I was noticing what a beautiful morning it was and how lucky we were to have such good weather in September. I was half listening to the radio as I parked the car and I heard a late breaking report about some plane hitting a Tower in the Trade Center. I hurried into the office and went to a break area with a TV to see if there was more information. I looked in disbelief at the destruction and immediately began praying for all those people in the building. I stood rooted to the spot, unable to really believe that someone could accidentally hit a huge building. The second plane came onto the screen as the broadcasters continued their emotional reports and in seconds the second tower was a blazing inferno. I dropped to the floor in horror. I was, and still currently, a student at Stephen F. Austin State University. On September 11, 2001, I was in my apartment getting ready for class. I had Good morning America on, which I usually do, and was listening to it from my bathroom. A few key phrases caught my attention..."a airplane has hit the world trade center." My attention turned from the daily task of getting ready to my television. There it was, right in front of my eyes. I watched the rest of the day, watching in disbelief. I remember watching the footage of the towers collapsing over and over, and every time feeling the chills run up and down my arms. I know for the first time in my life I hurt deeply inside for those lost, and their families. Its hard to know exactly the pain of those involved, but 911 hurt most everyone in a unique way. Tell us your story: I was laying in bed feeding my 1 month old son and and all of a sudden I heard a yell from my husband downstairs, a kind of yell I'll never forget. "Turn on the t.v." he shouted. The first image I saw was the first tower burning. At that time I didn't know what had just happened, then my husband and daughter joined me in our bed and we watched and heard a what caused the fire. I thought what a horrible accident, what made a plane do this? Then the second plane came through the air right before our eyes and crashed into the second tower. Now a year later I can't say that I really understand why some terrorists feel that what they did was the right thing to do. I don't know that I truly have faith in the changes in our national security that have been made either. I do know that I keep my children and family closer to me. I pray everyday for all the people who have had to go on without there loved ones. I pray for the men and women who died. I truly am greatful to be an american and live in the United States. How sad it would be to live in a country where seeing your flag didn't bring you a smile and some sense of peace. The school went into a code red (I think). Then we all went into the lockerooms. I was wondering what the heck was going on. They turned the lights out and didn't want anyone talking. So we sat there and waited. Everyone was getting really anxious. Then finally, one of the P.E. teachers told us what was going on: Two planes had crashed into both of the world trade center towers, and another into the pentagon. Everyone couldn't believe what they were hearing. I wasn't even thinking just sitting there. Not thinking just listening to everyone. One girl said "My parents were on a plane this morning". Everyone began to suspect the worse of it all. The day went on and in History we watched the news and it was so weird watching the thing playing over and over on TV. Everyone was talking about it. I wasn't even thinking of it all, just doing my work. My math teacher went home, and I don't know why. When I got home, my mom had come home early from work and was watching the TV. She says to me "Can you believe it". and I said "no". So we watched more news. Some time it sunk in to me I guess, and I couldn't believe it. September 11th became the main discussion in all of the classes mostly history, and sometimes we'd talk all hour about it. So time has passed. Life for the most part is back to normal. September 11th although it happened over 2 years ago, this nation will never forget it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just been laid off from my job the week before, so I was at home setting up interviews for jobs. I was watching Good Morning America when they came on with a Special Report. A plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center buildings. What a horrible accident this was, I thought, watchng black smoke billow out like a coal furnace. When the news crew backed up for a wider angle, I remember having as what can only be described as an extreme electrical shock run through my whole body, as a second plane flew into the other tower. I could not move or speak. It almost did not seem real. Then I knew at that moment our lives would be forever changed and scared. I knew from deep in my gut that terrorist had finally struck in America. For the first time in my life, I did not feel safe. As a lot of us did, anger also took hold and I wanted someone to pay. Then I just cried for hours upon hours and watched news coverage for days on end. Finally, I looked at my then 4 year old daughter, who then asked why I was crying? She could not understand much of what was happening then. It will be something she reads about in class some day. Still not feel the weight of matters that took place and how it changed the world. Alot like when I read about JFK, terrible it happened, but not totally getting the sorrow of the moment it happened. For I read about it in history and till 9-11, could not understand why my history teacher got a little misty eyed when telling his tale of November 22, 1963, much like I am now. I rode the train to work after getting my family ready for the day which included my son and husband- my husband off to work and my son who was 4 at the time off to pre-school. Anyway it was not long after I had come into my buidling on the 9th floor and I was getting settled for the day, my husband called and told me of what he thought was a bomb or something that went off in the world trade center. As he was telling me, my co-worker was receiving the news from her husband. We just stopped and looked at each other and immediatly my co-worker turned on his radio to hear what was happening. I didn;t know how bad it was at the time, but news quickly spread around the building as we listened to the radio to hear of another explosion and what it was in all actuallity, a plane crashing into the one Tower. Then shortly after that the other building was hit. We could not believe it , that it was actually happening. It seemed more like a action movie then real life. Then we found out the Pentagon also got hit, so we sat here stunned. Next our President of our company told us that we could go home if we wanted to and everyone evacuated our building and I started for home. I remember looking up at one of Chicago's tall buildings thinkind wow what if that happend her what would I do. The next thing that I did was rush home to call my mom who lives in upstate NY to see what she thought of all this that happend so fast. At first I had a hard time getting her on the line as the phones were all jammed up with people calling loved ones. But finally I contacted her and we talked for a hour both looking at the tv together one in one state and one in antoher. I always talked to my mom when something big happend or something that was a tradjedy in one form or antoher. No matter wher or what I would talk to her and we would see it through together. Anyway to me remebering that horrible day helps to bring some closure for me but it also lets me remember all the people who had to die that day one year ago and pray for all those families that lost their loved ones too. Tell us your story: I am a Quality Assurance Specialist at Letterkenny Army Depot, a small Army maintenance facility in south-central Pennsylvania. On the morning of 9/11, I was sitting at my desk when I overheard someone saying that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. I immediately thought that it was some sort of terrible accident. My thoughts were of a private, single-engine aircraft bouncing off the building and falling to the street below. A few minutes later I had to go to another office and the route took me by one of the employee break areas. A TV in the break area was tuned to CNN and a number of employees were in the break area watching the events as they unfolded. I stopped to investigate just what had happened and while we were watching, a plane hit the second tower. We stood there and watched as both towers eventually collapsed. I can still remember the feeling as the newscaster became silent when the first tower fell. I really don't think he knew what was happening at first. I eventually returned to my desk to find a message from my wife on my voice mail. She was, of course, concerned for my welfare since I work at a Govenment installation. He received a fax stating that 2 planes flew into the WTC. We assumed that the planes were Cessnas since the fax did not state that the planes were airliners. The fax kept printing out information. Next, the next fax stated that a United plane was missing. My heart sunk. A few minutes after leaving the cockpit, I received a call from the captain explaining that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. We would be landing the plane immediately as the nation was under a state of alert. I informed my crew while the captain announced that although our plane was fine; the company had wanted us to land. He gave no reason, other than that. Upon landing, the captain told everyone that they could turn on their cell phones while we were on the tarmac. People were telling other passengers what had occurred. I will never forget a man in First Class who turned pale. He said, "my son works in the WTC." I first called my mom, my dad, my brother, then my boyfriend. I told them that I was okay and had landed in Omaha, Nebraska. I quick turned off my phone and opened the door, as I was the Purser that day. The agent told the people to leave the plane as quickly as possible. "Leave your luggage and get out!" she said. She explained that there had been a bomb threat to the airport. After the commands, everyone had left the plane; we gathered our things and went to the ramp break room to receive further instructions. Other pilots and F/A's had their eyes glued to the screen crying. It was as if we were watching a movie. I couldn't believe what I had seen. It didn't seem real. It was just TV, right? Black smoke and planes crashing into the Twin Towers. It was horrifying. Did I know anyone on board? My heart sunk. I rushed to the computers, and tried to pull up flights #93 and #175. "Records Secured" appeared on the screen. I typed in friends names as fast as I could. I typed in Welsh, D and once again "Records Secured" appeared. I was sure there were problems with the system. A controller told everyone to get to an ATM machine and get out as much money as possible. "If we are at a time of war, the banks will be closed" he said. As we walked into the concourse, mayhem ensued. People were running in every direction. The lines at the car rental counters stretched outside. Flight Attendants were quitting on the spot. I overheard one group of Flight Attendants rent a minivan. They planned to drive home, first to Denver to drop half off then the others would proceed to Seattle. Despite this, my crew stayed together. Believe it or not, we wondered "how will the people fly home once this is all over?" We were the minimum crew, after all. As we walked outside, hotel vans were picking up anyone, just to get them out of the airport. Vans were overflowing with people. We stood outside for an hour until we hailed a cab to take us to the hotel, which was 45 minutes away. After check-in, we were glued to our TV. No names were listed at this point. I received calls left and right on my cell phone. My first call was from my friend in El Salvador. He said he was trying like crazy to call for hours, but the phone lines were down. A few hours later I got a hold of my friend in Washington D.C. The crew met for dinner, but didn't feel like drinking or partying. I didn't sleep that night. I had to keep the lights on that night and for many months afterward. A pilot friend called me to give me the names of the crews. I felt better that I did not know any listed. Unfortunately, they were incorrect. A few days later, I received a call at 5 AM. The captain wanted us to be downstairs in 30 minutes. We were finally cleared to leave!! Our plane did not take off until 9 hours later. So much red tape, so many procedures, documents, etc. It was then that I overheard a phone call. My flying partner recited the names of the crew. Debbie! My friend Debbie! The tall blonde who always wears her hat?! I ran to a payphone and called her sister, who is my neighbor. She sounded very tired and explained that she had tried to contact me. "Tell me it isn't true!" I said. It was. Debbie Welsh was the purser on Flight# 93. I yelled "NO!!!!!!!!" I really didn't want to get onto an airplane at that point. I was personally affected now. I was numb. My legs were numb. I had such a headache. I had no choice. We had to fly. There were no other flight attendants that could take my place. When we finally touched down at the SFO airport, a passenger told me to look out the window. As we pulled into the gate, there were HUNDREDS of mechanics and ramp workers waving American flags, holding signs, and clapping. The signs read "God Bless America," and "Welcome Home." As I opened the forward boarding door, there were people in business suits with roses, flags and bottles of water. They hugged us and welcomed us home. As we stepped into the terminal there were HUNDREDS more agents and airline workers with American flags and signs. They were clapping and crying. It seems that our plane was the first flight to successfully land in SFO after September 11th. Everyday I think about the people who were killed and the families who have lost their loved ones. I find myself constantly looking around and I get nervous when I see people who like they are from Iraq and other foreign countries. I pray everyday to keep my family safe. A lot of people blame President Busch for what happened, I feel that this would have happened no matter who was President at the time. These people are so full of hate and they teach hate to their children. The children don't know any different they only know what they are told whether it is the truth or not. I went to my third hour, and the TV was on, and my teacher, Mr. Barry, told me that the WTC were hit by air planes. I sat down in my seat and watched in horror. I thought that the world was going to be over as I knew it just then. I was pretty much in shock. Numb, even. We sat and talked about what happened, and watched the TV. I decided that I didn't feel safe in school, so I called my mother and had her pick me up. As I walked through the halls, there was a dead silence. I have never been to my school in the middle of the day while everyone was there and it was so quiet. By then, obviously, evreyone had sadly heard the news. All you heard was either a phone ring, or the echo of the same station on every TV in the school. While I was waiting for my mother, a man picked up his daughter because he was afraid that something would happen due to her ethnicity. My school is extreamly diverse. It was sad to think that a parent had to fear that. When my mom came and picked me up, we went up to our familys resturant and I was shocked to see it so full, and so quiet. Everyone was just sitting there watching. They couldn't even eat, just sit and cry. Then I went to get something for my mom, and I was surprised as to how empty the streets were. I don't even think that I slept that night. I could hear the military jets and planes going over my house. And I think I heard them flying every night for a few months. I was so scared that something was going to happen while I was sleeping. I had nightmares, that were almost so real I could feel the dear of the other people around me in my dream. The one that sticks out the most would be whn I was in an airplane, and the hijackers had moved us all to the back of the plane, and they made all the parents give their kids to them, and they killed them, while their helpless parents watched. And then we were flying towards the ground. And I felt the plane hit and I felt this feeling that I had just died. The dream was to realistic for me. My mom and dad and I decided to help those who lost their lives and of those of the dead by collecting money and sending it in. Then, we put 3 American Flags outside out resturand and at least 10 inside. This whole week we have put "United we will always stand" on our specials board. I just wish I could have helped out more.
