It was a little after 9:00am and I changed the channel on my kitchen TV from sesame street to channel 7 to see Regis and Kathie Lee. I saw live coverage of tower 1 full of smoke and the commentator saying it was hit by a plane. My husband was home as he didn't leave for work yet and he was yelling Oh my God thats a no fly zone. My mom was also with us in the kitchen. My two little children were in the living room watching cartoons. We continued to watch the TV and all of a sudden we saw Tower 2 get hit. Right then and there we knew it was some kind of attack. I started to cry and couldn't stop watching what was going on. Later on we heard that the Pentagon was hit and a few moments later I heard a fighter jet fly over my house. I immediately called the middle school and high school in my town and went to pick up my children and a few friends and took them to my house. It was a day I will remember for the rest of my life as one of the most frightening moments of all time. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was 4:00am New Mexico time. I was in Eldorado,NM. I was unloading at my last stop. I was pulling out a pallet that was around 9 feet tall. As I was pulling it very slowly toward me it got highsided on the edge of the trailer, sending the whole contents of the pallet on top of me. I have always been very carefull pulling these out because Affiliated Foods were getting sloppy, and wrapping their pallets loosely. I had turned my head to make sure of my footing and the whole 1000lbs came down on top of me. I cried out for it seemed like 10 minutes until one of the store employes came out and went for help... I was under the pallets load until I was freed. I thought I had pulled a muscle and took some anvil for the pain. I had called my company and told them what had happened. Before I got to Santa Rosa I got called my wife and told her what had happened. Several minutes later I heard on the c.b. that the twin towers in New York had been hit. And my wife called again telling me what had happeded. When I got to Santa Rosa, I called my safety person and told her what had happened,I had a accdent and I was hurting. My semi-truck went 90 miles an hour and that was what I was did. I was passing every thing including cow trucks. I was hurting bad at this time,My pain was was mine and I felt the pain of the others too that were in N.Y. I had made it back to Amarillo and went to the doctor. I had broken my back. I found out 8 months later that I had blown 2 discs too. I had surgery on Oct 30,2002. I now have 2 eight inch rods and 16 screws and part of my spine is fused. I was feeling the pain of the people of Sept 11,2001 with my own. I still have those feelings, their loss and mine. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was talking to my grandmother and heard on 95.5 that a plane has hit one of the towers. I told my grandmother to turn the TV on and I will call her later. I then immediately called my husband who worked in the City at the time and he said that a plane hit and they think it was more than just an accident. At that point I held my stomach, for I was 6 months pregnant at the time and was really not sure what was happening. I proceeded to work and when I arrived the chatter was that another plane hit and then the Pentagon. At that moment I thought of my older children who were in school and I left work without looking back. I truly felt at that point that we were going to war on our homefront that things will never be the same. I kept thinking of my children in school wondering what they were thinking. I immediately could not get over the bridge since they closed it but I finally went down a one way street and proceded onto the bridge. As I was driving I looked to my left and there it was smoke billowing from the towers. My heart ached and I had an odd feeling that it was one of those events that will live with you forever. I worried about my husband but felt so helpless for my children and my child who was not born yet. I never returned to work after the 11th. I stayed home and my second daughter was born on the 11th of December. I would not stop watching TV. I was in awe of the life I put my children in. I do realize we will come through and we will succeed in whatever we need to do to stop this terror on our homefront. I want to hold my children safe, I want them to never feel afraid or alone in this world. I want them to know this is a wonderful world we live in and that 90% of us are good and honest people. I want them to love and never hate those around us. I hope that we can make their world a better place and a safe place. I feel for all of those lost and all of those that have lost. I could never imagine this happening to us, but we are stronger for it and we will come out of it bigger and better. Hug more, love more, try not to yell or get upset over simple things. Enjoy every day and every minute. Those people did not chose to leave us they were forced into it. My heart felt sympathy to all of those who lost and those of us who have been affected by this horrible event. Hug your children and family more...love them more...understand them more...your family is the most important and that you are there for them in good times and in bad. I never had a day go by that I don't think of what happened, the people it happen to and the children that this has effected. My thoughts and prayers are with you. We had CNN in Brazil, but I could not rem. what channel. My friend told me, and I watched in horror. At the time, we were 4 hours ahead of US time. He had flown out on the 10th with our neighbor, the owner of a small, private plane. We had a cleaning service at our home that day, and our 5 year old son, Anthony, was watching cartoons before he had to go to Kindergarten at noon. I normally would have had the "Today" show on, but had some files and paperwork to take care of, so our son was watching TV in the family room. When the cleaning ladies came downstairs, our son went upstairs to his play room, and asked me to turn on his TV. I went up and turned on NBC to see the WTC on fire. I turned to ABC to see the Pentagon on fire. I asked myself if they were showing scenes from a bad movie, put cartoons on for my son, and ran downstairs to turn on the TV in the family room. I could not believe what I was seeing. I called my husband in Chicago to tell him what was going on. Chicago was one hour behind us, so he had still been asleep. He could not belive what I was telling him. I told him to stay safe, and to keep in touch. His conference was cancelled, but he could not get home until the next day. As air space was closed, he rented a truck to get home. Our son was upset by the events only after he heard on TV that the Sears Tower had been evacuated. he knew his Daddy was staying close by there, and he figured if 2 towers in NYC came down, maybe his Daddy's tower would too. We called Daddy several times (enough to waste his cell phone battery!) to give him comfort that Daddy was still okay. I knew someone that I graduated high school with, and also someone that I went to college with, who both lost their lives as they worked at the WTC. I watched as my son's school made a human flag today, and I shed tears for those I knew and those whose stories I have only seen on TV, read in books and magazines and have heard about through friends. I, like many others, was far away from NYC; Washington, DC; and Shanksville, PA on September 11, 2001. Growing up in New England and Pennsylvania, I knew of, or had been to, all of the locations involved. I felt a closer connection to what had happened, as compared to my neighbors, because of that fact. NYC will never be the same to me and I'm not sure when I will be going back for a visit. The lives of every person here on earth have been changed - hopefully we will never see another day like 9/11/01 in any of our lifetimes. The worst thing in the history of United States, as I know it up to this moment, happened Tuesday morning. A terrorist attack took place a little after 9:00am. I was in school at the time. After the second period of the day, I ran into [my friend] Jason who said a teacher told everyone that a plane had crashed into the twin towers...I passed through the auditorium and the tv was on with coverage of the events. The other 2 targets were the whitehouse and pentagon...At lunchtime, a teacher let me call home to see if everything was ok. Other students were calling, too...The school was chaotic. No classes were proceeding and all the tv's were turned on. All the shows had stopped and every single channel was covering the events. Some of the teachers were crying. Everyone else was silent. When conversations started, the guys were talking about who did it, and the girls were talking about the people who were killed. Though it seems sexist, that was a definite division in within conversations. The tv's were still on. They kept showing the same scenes over and over again: the planes hitting and the buildings collapsing. There was a plane that crashed in a field in Pittsburg. It only took 4 planes from Boston that were hijacked by Afghanistans with box cutters. My mother picked me up after school and I had a dentist appointment and a senior picture appointment. Each waiting room had the tv on with the continuing coverage. After all had calmed down, the entire country seemed to pull together to help. It made me very proud to be a citizen of this country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9/11/01, I was in the Di-Lorenzo Tri-care Health Clinic in the Pentagon's 8th Corridor. I was a member of the Early Response Teams that rescued all of the survivors of that horrific incident. Members of our clinic received seven Soldiers Medals and numerous other Awards for their heroism and bravery, I was one of those soldiers. Our Medical Clinic was the only teams that laid hands on any of the survivors before any other medical agency. In fact, we really felt a "slap in the face" when Arlington Rescue took ALL of the credit for rescue efforts on that day. Arlington Rescue dispatched ALL of the Ambulances to the South Parking area of the Pentagon, we saw not one Ambulance when trying to get our wounded to the hospitals that were awaiting their arrival. We had to commandeer numerous privately owned vehicles to get them there. Our Medical Teams at the Pentagon deserve the right to be acknowledged as THE PRIMARY RESCUE TEAMS. If it weren't for us, very few if any survivors would have made it. Of course I know that it was not about recognition at the time of the incident but somebody could have thrown us a bone or something. I risked my life numerous times on that day only to have Arlington Rescue on the front page of the Washington Post shaking hands with Michael Jordan and the incaption of "PENTAGON'S RESCUE TEAMS ACKNOWLEDGED FOR THEIR BRAVERY." It made us ill to have to endure the pain of hearing the lie that was told all over the world. I even cornered one of their Captains almost a year later and told him these words. "Hopefully there will never be a next time, but if there ever is, could you please obstain from taking all of the credit and give some to those that deserve it?" I myself rescued 18 people, however this is not about MY accomplishments, this is about my fellow soldiers, airmen, and seamen in the Medical Feild that were there that day and made THE difference of life and death. THEY put their lives on the line and THEY deserve the credit. I never wanted to be on Oprah Winfrey telling my story, I never wanted to be called a "HERO." It's not for me to call myself a hero, it's for others to acknowledge the fact that you are one. Arlington calls themselves the Hero's of the Pentagon's attacks. I assure you that they are regular men and women that showed up at the wrong area of the Pentagon and a little too late I might add. Yes, the area that they put their Ambulances was in the area of the impact, but, we could not reach them as there were no exits to that area. We had to take our wounded to the North Parking area. We desperately searched for Ambulances and found none. I was a Police Officer in Louisanna before I went back into the military and it was my idea to commandeer P.O.V.'s to take our wounded to the local E.R.'s. If it weren't for the good people who allowed themselves to be ordered into a rescue role, there would have been far less survivors. I have no idea if anyone will ever read this, but at least I have put into words what I have felt for far too long. My immediate thoughts were for my brother working in downtown Manhattan. I e-mailed, and got an instant "Out Of The Office Today" message. Thank God. I called and got through at 9:15 a.m.! An open line was almost impossible to get. He was a shaken wreck at home in Brooklyn afraid the tower would fall. Michael described the rain of debris in their little backyard. My husband and I were in touch by phone worried about his daughter, a young architect in midtown Manhattan. Thank God she was able to let her father know she was o.k., with one exception. She saw the towers fall. All I could do was to think of my beloved native city, the horror, and that life would never be the same as we knew it an hour prior. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th It all happened with a blink of an eye. Once the Twin Towers stood, now they are gone. There were two passenger planes that were hijacked and their target was the World Trade Center. The planes hit the towers at approximately 8:45 and 9:02 am. This dramatic event was later called "September 11th" because the terrorist attacks happened on that day. This day will be remembered in people's lives and generations to come. It was a terrifying moment for all Americans. I was in Earth Science class at Barker High School when this event happened. Our class heard about the news from a nearby teacher who came in and told us a plane had hit the World Trade Center buildings. So our teacher turned on the television, the television kept showing the 2nd plane hitting the north building of the trade center. Then they showed another plane crashing into the Pentagon. While showing the Pentagon attack on the bottom of the screen it said there was an evacuation in the White house. Then when I went to Global Studies class our teacher Mrs. Capen had just finished a lesson the day before on the life in Afghanistan and how the woman and children were treated as well as the Taliban. All I have to say is this was a disgusting and sick idea. Osama Bin laden is in the same boat as Timothy McVeigh the Oklahoma City bomber. The same thing that happened to McVeigh is going to happen to Osama as soon as we catch him. People are still mourning a loss of a relative or just a really close friend. America will recover with a lot more strength and people will have high integrity. I saw the north tower fall and there were people running, ash and dust along with papers flying through the air. People just barely got out and some of them did not make it out. There were fireman and policeman-helping people that either got cut and bleeding, burnt severely or were caked with dust and ash. The clean up is just finishing now 9 months later. After they found people, they buried them with American flags. There were hardly any survivors. Some of the people were in the elevators and on stairwells. People on the planes made calls to their loved ones telling them goodbye and that their plane was hijacked. Also there were people in the buildings making calls telling to their families and shouting to get the attention of the fireman. This event has affected me a lot by seeing people literally taking their life knowing that they were probably going to die anyway. Also people making calls to their families and telling them goodbye forever. It made me appreciate my life and my family more than I did before. Tell us your story: I would first like to say that even though i was not actually there in New York or Pennsylvania, on September 11, i feel like they pretty much attacked my city, because you can't just mess with one city, it affects us all. I remember it very well. I was sitting in 2nd period, and they came over the intercom and said that the first plane had hit the world trade center. At first i thought that it was more than likely a small plane accident, and kept going on about my school work. Right after the bell rang to start 3rd period, they asked all the teachers to turn on the TV's so we could watch it. When i first saw that it was not a small plane, but a large comercial plane, I had this weird feeling. I was watching for a couple minutes, and saw the 2nd plane hit. It was fairly normal except that I had a somewhat unexpected day off. I had FOX-5 News on and was half-listening to it as I was getting ready to make breakfast while browsing the Internet. That changed when one of the anchors said something about going live to New York City where "the World Trade Center is on fire." I looked over to the TV and there it was - - the South Tower on fire, as big as life. I forgot about breakfast and sat down at my computer to search for some news as the news anchors continued to talk about what was happening, mentioning the plane that hit the Empire State Building decades ago. I remember thinking to myself that this was a freak accident, that while disastrous, it would be OK in the long run. But suddenly, a big fireball filled half the screen, and the news guys just lost it. "Oh, there's an explosion! That's it -- someone's deliberately flying planes into buildings!" I just sat there in shock. I couldn't believe this was happening. My thoughts then went out to a close friend living in Staten Island, but possibly in Manhattan at the time (turns out she was still in Staten Island at the time, though I didn't know for almost a week). But little did I know that the terrorists weren't through just yet. I don't remember exactly when, but I heard a rumbling noise outside my window, which overlooked Columbia Pike in Arlington. I didn't know at the time, but a plane had struck the Pentagon at that moment, about 2-1/2 miles due east of me. The news anchors interrupted someone they were talking to from New York and immediately went to live coverage of "an explosion reported at the Pentagon." The now-familiar scene of black smoke pouring out of the fortress-like office building filled the screen. There were more rumblings outside, followed by an explosion that vibrated the walls and windows of my apartment. Minutes later, there was another report of a plane heading for Washington, which was alarming considering that the FAA airspace ban had taken effect. I don't remember anytime I felt more frightened in recent years, staring out the window watching for a wayward jumbo jet. Terrorism, which up until then had only been a news item from a distance, had struck home in Arlington County. Police, fire, and emergency sirens blared almost continuously all day. As I was watching for the plane, which eventually crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after an apparent heroic passenger uprising, I looked over to the TV and saw the World Trade Center shrouded in smoke. I didn't realize what had happened until whoever was talking (Dan Rather, I think) said that one of the towers had fallen. A few minutes later, the other tower collapsed. And at some point during that time, the Pennsylvania crash was reported - - first as a possible military shoot-down, but later confirmed as a crash. All I can really recall at the time was a numbness - - not quite sadness, not quite rage, not quite anything. My sister in Philadelphia did call me to make sure I was OK; my parents, who were in Orlando, Florida, that day and stranded by the FAA flight ban, didn't catch me until that Thursday. Local news coverage continued to show continuous updates of the Pentagon and the impromptu and virtual evacuation of Washington. At around 11:30 I took a blank tape and began recording news coverage, switching channels periodically to get a permanent record of the events. The tape ran all day, stopping just to make sure I had enough to get President Bush's announced speech that evening. Later that day I had to get out of my apartment, so I got in my car and drove around town. It was surreal, to say the least. Many streets miles away from the Pentagon were closed, and traffic was awful in places. As I pulled back into my apartment complex, I was able to see a dissapating plume of smoke rising above Columbia Pike. Despite all I had seen on television, that will probably be my lasting image of that day. On 9/11/01, I was in the Pentagon cafeteria getting coffee when I heard people talking about a plane crash in New York City, and it sounded like a terrible accident. I left the cafeteria and ran into an Army sargeant that I knew well and he told me "World Trade Center... both towers... one plane each." I ran up to my boss' office in the "E-ring" and walked in to find two of my colleagues watching the breaking news on TV, with the Trade Towers on fire. We knew who must have done this. As we watched, it occurred to me that the day might not be over, since we knew that Al Qaeda often liked to try simultaneous strikes in different locations. As my thoughts were swirling in my head and I began to focus on the fact that we were probably already in a War on Terrorism, I felt the building shake. We called it the "thud" on the side of the building where I was (nearly the complete opposite side of the building from the impact). I knew we had been hit. My colleagues spent the next couple of minutes in denial, until the TV broke away from the story in New York, to show our building with thick, oily black smoke pouring from it. The mental loop went through our heads over and over, a surreal disconnect of realization that we were actually in the building that was now on the news around the world. After another minute or two, people began shouting in the hallway. We had been hit. By what, we did not know, but most assumed that it was another airplane. Could there be more? We filed outside and the alarms were sounding. Standing on the parade ground, I turned around to see the black cloud I had seen moments earlier on the television. Wondering what might be next, we heard the Defense Protective Service police shouting for us to get away from the building -- another plane was coming. I made it to my car and drove up the George Washington Parkway, finally getting home a few hours later, after stopping at a payphone to convince the operator to put me through to my parents in Boston. On 9/12, no one returned to their office at the World Trade Center. We returned to a Pentagon still on fire at 7am, to continue the fight. My office reeked of jet fuel. We did not yet know that we would be facing a war on many fronts or that anthrax would further scare the nation a month later. And, two years on, we have a long, long way to go. We will never forget. They stopped talking about their topic and said they were going to a report about the World Trade Center. I saw camera footage of one of the towers smoking due to the huge hole in it. A witness was talking about it sounding like a bomb but others recalled seeing a plane crash into it. Alot of people were confused. Another bomb? A plane crashed into the tower? What was going on? I didn't know what to think! Then, I saw another plane flying too close and it turned almost sideways and crashed into the otherside of the second tower. I went numb. It felt like the world was coming to an end! I called my mother at work to tell her what was going on and how scared I was. Then, another plane hit the Pentagon! It was unbeleivable. I remember asking her "do you think we're about to go to war?" She agreed that's exactly how it seemed. Later, they found another crashed but luckily it didn't hit a building. It was still just as horrible! It seemed like seconds later the beautiful Twin Towers collapsed, one by one. Throughout the day, I most have called her a billion times! I called my best friend, in Indiana and my grandmother. I don't know who all I talked to that day but I know I was really in shock and scared to death of what was about to happen! I almost had an anxiety attack! For the longest time afterwards, the sound of a plane flying over my home, whether they were headed toward or away from Bush Field or Fort Gordon, I felt sick. Tell us your story: The day began like any other, arising far too early for my taste and making the trek to Chemistry, far too achedemic in curiculum for the wee hours of the morning. Class began as usual, and the familiar ring of our teacher's cell phone sounded. As she intently listened to her caller, we watched the expression on her face change from fatigued and overworked to shocked and devestated. The caller had actually been a close friend who resides in New York calling to inform her of his whereabouts and that he was not in any extreme danger due to the terrorist attacks of that morning. Up until that point, there was not a soul in the room who had heard a single comment on the horrific events that had taken place on that fateful morning. At that moment, none of us truely realized the extraordinary impact these events would have on the lives of so many, personally, nationally, and world-wide. All I knew at that moment was that the World Trade Center had been attacked, that each Twin Tower had been struck by a commercial airplane. (I, unfortunately, was informed of the first plane's crash simultaneously with the second plane's crash.) Instead of encouraging the investigation of any details whatsoever of that morning, we were forced to return to the everyday activities of a "normal" school day, stifling all curiosity we had. The school officials claimed this was too traumatic an event to be wittnessing at school, that many students would feel far too uncomfortable and would prefer to wait until they were in the comforts of their own homes to investigate the situation any further. To some, this is perfectly valid, however, the day seemed endless, and I could hardly bear learning of these life-altering events through rumors and word of mouth by means of what my friends were previewed to by the few teachers who disobeyed the principal's orders. I wanted to know who committed these horrific acts of violence against innocent civilians, what motives they had, and what the reprocussions were thus far. Few of my questions could actually be answered until much later, but I needed and yearned for some connection to New York; I wanted to actually see what was happening. When I got home, the aftermath of September 11th was not very different from most anyone else's. I am fortunate enough to not know personally anyone who passed away due to the terrorist attacks. However, I sympathized and empathized with all who had any remote connection to any victims. I would find myself bawling in the car as I listened to the radio, where the announcer was revealing yet another story of an email a son received from his father on the 82nd story of the second Twin Tower, reading something to the effect of "If I dont make it, I want you to know I love you and am so incredibly proud of everything you do." These heartwrenching stories were endless, one after the other, each unique in who it affected and how they would confront their emotions. Yet, these events bound everyone together. The nation as a whole mourns for the civilians, firefighters, police men, emergency workers, and vollunteers who tragically lost their lives. We want to be able to say that we can return to normalcy; however after a tragedy such as this normalcy will never be the same again. We will all remember where we were on the morning of September 11th. It is sad to admit that it took a something of this magnitude to arise within us such national pride and sympathy for the common man. However, now that it has happened, all we can do now is prevent anything like this from happening again. I want anyone directly affected by the attacks of 9-11 to know that no matter how hard life seems, and how much they question why it had to happen to them, the rest of us are experiencing the pain and suffering with them. Though it may not be the most noteworthy account or the most elequently written, I want to dedicate my story to the memory of all those who tragically lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
