Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I would like to begin by sending out my deepest sympathies to everyone who has lost someone in this horrible tragedy. My father has lost his cousin William Arthur Gardener. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to know him but this has still had a huge impact on my life and those of my family. Let's see, the morning of that dreadful day, I had just gotten home from work, and had the news on to check and see how the weather was going to be, so I could dress my daughter accordingly.As I was preparing myself to get a little sleep before I started my daily errands, "BREAKING NEWS" flashed across my T.V. screen. At the time it was thought to be a little private plane that might have had some sort of misfunction or something. I remember thinking how horrible for those poor people, I watched a little longer before turning in for bed.I actually shut my set off right before the second plane hit the other tower. Upon waking up 2 hrs. later, I turned the T.V. back on and was in utter disbelief as to what was happening. I was filled with so many different emotions. An overwhelming sadness for all those people on the planes and what their last thoughts were, and my first reaction was to go and get my daughter out of school, the not knowing what if anything was going to happen next, I knew I needed her to be with me. Then I went to the store and proceeded to get some supplies for all those firefighters and policeman,and everyone else working round the clock to help those poor people, I too wanted to do what I could.May all those innocent people forever rest in peace. This will be a day of mourning for myself and family and everyone forever. I remember everyone's cell phones all started to ring within seconds of each other....disbelieving "What?!" and "Oh, my GOD!" was quiclkly followed by eerie silence. No one knew what to say or do. The following days and weeks were difficult for the obvious reasons and the added fact that my husband is in the Army. I couldn't come to grips with what had happened...the enormity of that day. Now, a year later, I still haven't come to grips with it, really. I did have a thought today, though. I thought how much hate was behind these acts. Hate for a country, a way of life, and for LIFE, in general. That, to me, is the one thing that I find both the saddest AND the hardest to understand. Are we as Americans just that naive, to think that everyone CAN get along? Or is it just that amazing that so many people bought into the hatred and violence? 9/11 was a horrendous, senseless, hate-filled act of terrorism. More than wanting justice or retribution...I just want to understand. Why? How could you? How could we let you? Where do we go from here? Mostly, just WHY!?? Tell us your story: I had just got out of the shower.I sat down to watch some TV when the news broke into the show and took us to New York city.I can remember i was just about to turn the channel when i saw the World Trade Center on fire.At first i thought it was an accident(as im sure everyone did watching),then while Im watching this live broadcast another plane flys right into the other tower.I remember the news caster's voice very shaky as she was explaining that a second plane had hit the World Trade Centers.The realization that there were alot of people dead or trapped, set in.I can remember tears just started rolling down my face as i watched.Nobody knew what was going on or why.I walked into work about a half hour later that day(i work at a store in my town as a cashier)my boss just looked at me with total disbelief.That whole day was spent listening to the radio as people would come in the store with such saddeness wondering what was going to happen next.Even though we were about five hours away from the city, there was not one person in this town that did not feel what had happened.I remember walking outside that day and feeling i was a different person and this was surely a different world. Tell us your story: I was working as a payroll clerk for the Lake County, Indiana Sheriff's Department on the day of this tragady and the TV in my Commander's office happened to be on when the first plane hit. She screamed for us to come into her office and witness what was happening. We could not believe our eyes, that a horrible tragedy was occurring in the USA which we never dreamed would happen. When we finally understood the situation, everyone started telling about who they knew that worked in NY. Suddenly I came to realize that my daughter and son in law lived in New Jersey but both worked in the city. I immediately tried to find some way to contact their employers to see if in fact they were OK. Communications were down of course, so there was no way except to sit by a phone and hope I would get a call. I did receive that call in the evening from my daughter and found out she had been sent to another area of the city to work that day. My son in law was taking the Staten Island Ferry to work when he saw the first plane hit. His office building was destroyed and they were relocated but they were fine. It was an eternity waiting for that phone call and I can only imagine how the people felt that never did get that phone call saying all was OK. My heart and prayers go out to them all. God bless us and make our futures safe. Praise to the police officers (my son is one) and fire fighters who worked so hard to help the fallen. God Bless America. School was going on as usual, but about ten o'clock, parents began arriving and taking their children home. At first it was slightly humorous, becuase every few minutes another one of my classmates would leave, and the class grew steadily smaller. The remaining students and I began speculating about the cause of the unexpected onslaught of parents, giggling as our ideas grew increasingly silly and farfetched. Eventuallly, the humor wore off, becuase we realized that the situation was serious. Teachers were spotted crying in the hallways. On our way back to our classroom, which was in a trailer outside, my friend pointed to the sky and exclaimed, "Wow, look at that!" My teacher's expression instantly changed, and she stared up in a panic, asking, "What, where?" My classmate replied, "The moon, it's out during the day." Our teacher tried to laugh off her minor panic attack, but we knew that something wasn't right. When we got back to our trailer, our teacher turned on the television to a news station. We saw images of a tall building in flames, but thought little of it, as fires occur somewhere almost everyday. It wasn't until our teacher finally decided to explain everything that we realized the significance of the images. She told us that she wanted to tell us the truth, despite the wishes of the school administration. The twin towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington had been hit by planes, which had been piloted by terrorists. Instantly, my classmates and I began to panic. I knew that my parents worked in D.C., but I had no idea where, and I feared the worst. For the rest of the day, we all went around in a semi-stupor. To my relief, my mother arrived at the end of the day to pick me up, which in and of itself would have alerted me that something was amiss, becuase I usually rode the bus home. The next few weeks, I went around as usual, but cringed everytime I heard a plane's engines roar overhead. It took several months before I was able to see jet contrails cross the sky without shuddering involunterally. The bus driver told us all the kids on the bus what had happened. he did not know the whole story. he only knew that two planes crashed into the twin towers. when i went home, i found more about what was going on i heard also that the pentagon was hit and crashed in pennylsavana. my life hasn't realy changed because none of my relatives or any one that i knew was in the planes or in the twin towers. i feel bad for all the peole that had died. i think that we should remember all the people that had died in the crash and those that were serouly injoured. all those people tha were in the plane that crashed in pennsvanna should remember. we should remember hoew brave there were when they tried to go and stopthe terroist that were going to crash into the white house. we should stop them from killing more more innocent people we should stop them for more security. She sounded frantic on the phone and at first I couldn't figure out what she was trying to tell me. Finally, I heard her say, "Turn on the TV." So I did, and I was completely shocked by the images they were showing on the news. When they showed the planes crashing into the Trade Center and the people running and screaming on the sidewalk, all I could think to myself was, "How could this happen? Is this real? It seems like a scene out of a movie." The reality of it didn't hit me until my room mate said that she needed to call her boyfriend and make sure he was OK because he worked at the Pentagon, which was the site of the other plane crash. She was extremely upset because she couldn't get ahold of him because the cell phone service was down that day. It finally hit me that it was real and that real people were being affected by the tragedy. I fortunately, did not have any family members or loved ones working at the Trade Center or the Pentagon. She was almost one at the time so she didn't like watching the news that much! I got a call from a woman at my church telling me about the first planing hitting the WTC and I immediately turned on the news. I was glued to the TV most of the day. My husband was at work and I was calling him periodically with updates. Both of my brothers and my sister-in-law work in DC so I wasn't able to relax until I heard from them and knew they were okay. I must have talked to my mother and best friend at least a dozen times each. It was very odd for me to watch all of the death and devastation because I was 3 months pregnant at the time. I kept thinking about the life growing inside me and the hope that it represented. I thought about the many women who were pregnant whose husbands would never see their babies born...and about the children who would never know their fathers...and about everyone else who experienced a loss that cruel day. My heart was broken. I still think about all of those people each day. My heart was filled with pride for our country and I desired so much to do something to help. But what could I do? I thought and prayed and then I realized that I could have an impact on the lives around me. I can raise my kids to respect the differences in people and not to hate. I can reach out to people who are hurting and I can be proud to be an American. Today is September 11, 2002. This morning I sat on the floor playing with BOTH of my daughters and as my mind went back to one year ago I realized that as Americans, we are stronger when faced with adversity, we are united against a common foe and we are blessed beyond compare. When i first witnessed what happened on September 11th, i had just got out of school. I walked to my after school babysitting job. As usaul, the girl i watched wouldnt be there for an hour. I flipped on the television and saw a building on fire. I thought nothing of it, but when i changed the channel again it was still on. For the first time i decided to watch the news. When i heard what had happened , i only felt a little scared. I knew it was bad bye the tone in the reporters voice. Just then , the 6 year old i babay sat for walked in. She asked me what had happenend,and i tried my best to explain it in a way she could understand. Then she said "is it going to happen again" and it made me actually think. What if it did happen again somewhere where i had family or somewhere closer to me like in boston. Has your life changed since september 11th? The most important thing i learned about septemeber 11th was to appreciate things. Like family, if they are there today, who knows if the will be there tommorow? Also appreciate everyday. Live it like your last, because you dont know it might be. Lastly appreciate the fact you are alive today after september 11th, there are people out there who now longer have a father or a mother or a grandparent. Who are just under the age of 8. What do you think should be remembered about september 11th? What i think should be remembered about september 11th are a few things. Number how are nation didnt fall apart, but got closer together. We didnt react in complete panic but instead we all united to help one another. Another thing is volunteers from every where were helping one another like complete strangers. They risked there lives to help one another. Lastly what i think should be rememebred is the firefighters and policemen who also risked there lives to save other people. Many of them died bye just going in the building to find survivors, and helping people. And what i think is most important is to remember all that died, and there families who now wake up in the morning and think they arent there anymore and wont be again. I had 45 min to be to school. I jumped in the shower, quickly got dressed and threw my make-up on. My mother drove me to school cause i hated riding the bus. When i arrived at school, i did the normal thing and went to talk to my friends, until the bell rang. I was in my Social Studies class when the Principal came on the speaker and said that one of the towers were hit in New York. The teacher turned on the news, and we sat there and watched. As we were watching t.v, we saw another plane hit another tower. Everyone couldn't believe what happened. A little bit later, we heard about the Pentagon , and another plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. Watching people jump from the building. It was very upsetting, and not knowing what to really think right away. I was in 8th grade and now i am a senior. But it seems just like yeaterday that it happened. Tell us your story: When I first heard that a plane hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center it didn't really register then the tragedy that was taking place. I thought that a plane crashed into the top of the building accidentally, a plane crash (in some ways a common occurence). Before I left the house I heard that another plane struck the other tower and then I began to pay attention. On Good Morning America, they were saying that it appeared to be a terrorist attack. That blew my mind, but still I continued on to work, thinking that the media sometimes blows things out of porportion. When I arrived at work it was the talk of the office, but we all continued on with our day. Soon after, we heard about the Pentegon, the crash in Pennsylvania, and the collapsing of the twin towers. It was a terrorist attack on Americans. I was devestated at all of lives that I knew without a shadow of a doubt were lost. I began to pray at my desk, to keep His hands on the situation. To comfort and bless the families in this horrible time. I know what it feels like to lose someone to a tragedy, and at first nothing can comfort you. I also know that GOD is all powerful and that He allows things to happen for whatever reason. Sept. 11 was a day of great sorrow and it will never be forgotten, God was there that morning and He will be with us until he says its the end. It's hard to hear and even harder to believe, but the people that we lost on that day are a lot better off than we are today, one year later. They've made it to where we have to go, and this journey from here on out will be difficult. It will get worse before it gets better. Dealing with the pain and lose will always be hard, but with His help there is nothing that we can't overcome and survive. So when it seems like no one cares or there is no reason to go on, just remember with GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. And in order to see our loved ones who have gone on before us, we must live to reach the same point that they reached a year ago. Time doesn't heal all wounds, but if you allow God he will ease the pain. God Bless. Tell us your story: I had just graduated from culinary school on aug 21st, and was refered by a teacher to Pastry Chef Heather Ho,at windows on the world. I worked there for 5 days, and on sept 11 was supposed to be in at 2pm for evening service. She gave me an opportunity when i had no experience professionally. She along with many of my new co-workers were killed. My whole family and al friends thought i was there, my cousin was the only one who could get through....from a cell phone in spain, woke my sister up saw what happened and ran to my room. I sat bolt upright when she slammed my door open, she said thank God you are home, by the time i was at the bottom of the stairs the second plane hit. i remember every second from that point on so clearly, trying to get in touch and let them(anyone,everyone)that i was ok,if they were ok. after the pentagon was hit, i got a cab went to my sisters high school to get her. they werent letting students go, i went a little nuts and demanded to see her....once they knew who i was related to i had such a jolt to reality,the principal as well as many people in the main office hugged me and were so happy i was alive(my sister hearing the news on the loudspeaker was in the counselors office along with dozens of other children and teachers believing their loved ones gone) one woman told me that i gave her hope that her husband was alright. they brought my sister out to me and, i dont know she was broken and then back together. I never wanted to let go,but we needed to get home(the cab driver waited outside her high school for 45 mins. i only had 10 dollars and he knew that.....he didnt take the money)once i got home within a few mins my mom got there,she worked in the local junior high as a school aid. after calming down she asked me if she could go back to the school.....there were .....so many chldren who had possibly lost parents. This is why I Love my mother so dearly, i offered to go too,but she said stay and try to get in contact with others. my father walked home from midtown manhattan where he worked. my boyfriend of 4 years worked in long island and came to my house at 11:30 that night because my sister Gaby threatened him if he didn't(he left me shortly after 9/11) with my family with me i couldnt sleep for 2 days,i felt could have should have been there, why did i get the night shift why was i ok? sometimes i still feel that. so on the 3 day i decided to volunteer,started to leave m hose when they announced on tv grand central was being evacuated. i stayed home,scared. then i realized that helping others was the only way i could repay the fact that i was still here. Got in touch with those working for windows' at Beacon restaurant, went there....cooked for 1 day and spent the next month and a half answering phones....for families waiting for any news. we had none.....i talked to people for very long periods of time,passing the phone to other volunteers when we couldnt talk anymore. I was with volunteers with the biggest hearts. each night i wandered around the city to vigils passing missing posters. New York City was sad, but beautiful too. the vibe of this town was complete brotherhood. we banded together cried together, sat in parks mourning crying on the shoulders of strangers. in november, i recieved a call from the chef i worked with that 1 day at the begining of my volunteer service, he offered me a job at his restaurant. i tok it and worked there for 3 and a half years. Around 8:00 Kansas time, 11:00 New York time my mom came home to get a TV because she answered phones and couldnt stay in the back office. She said she heared on the raido on her way to work the DJs making jokes about a plane flying into the WTC. We turned on the TV and it was no joke. My brother and I sat in front of the TV all day even though we were sick. I was so scared, even though I lived in Kansas and there was nothing there. I though every time a plane flew over they were going to drop bombs. I am still scared today but I want to say thank you to all the heros, fire fighters and miltary who are defened our country today. My frantic daughter's voice on the other end of the phone sent a chill through my body. Rushing to the television, I was trying to get her to tell me what was going on. I thought one of our family members was seriously hurt and they had the accident on the news. My 19 year old son was getting ready to head out the door for college when I called him back inside. We were hearing the voice of Katie Curig just as the second plane came into view and flew into the second tower. A nauseating feeling came over both my son and myself and we both immediately began to pray fervently out loud for God to deliver people from this attack. My daughter said she would begin praying immediately, and my son and I both knelt right in front of the T.V. screen, placed our hands on the chaotic scene in front of us and began to plead for the lives of these people to be spared. We prayed for the law enforcement officials and the fire fighters to have courage in the face of fear, order where there may have been chaos and the ability to see and hear those who would need their help. We prayed the rest of the morning off and on as the rest of the story began to unfold across the country. That was all we could do, and we still pray this day when we feel compelled. God help us. I was working in the kitchen, doing kitchen patrol. I was serving meals to my fellow soldiers. One of our Drill Sergants came in and told us that the World Trade Center had been bombed. We were hysterical, being in Boot Camp, we saw a huge threat of going to war. Later that day, out Company Commander gave us a briefing on what had all happened. We were then permitted to call our families and tell them that we were going to be alright. It was a very memorable day for me. I will never forget it. My neighbor asked me, "Clay, have you been wacthing t.v. this mornning?" I said, "No." She said in all seriousness, "What have you been doing, Sleeping?" I said, "I have been up for about an hour and a half." She said, "they're bombing the World Trade Center. Go watch the t.v." So I went into her living room and saw the live news report, and was taken aback at the chaos, terror, and mayhem that I was watching. I asked my neighbor, with just an ounce of humorist hope, was this for real? She said, "Yes, it is." I stood there mortified and in a state of disbelief. I lefted her house, and at full speed, ran to my car in which my wife was waiting. I told her and she was shocked. I turned on the radio to hear what was happening. If this can be believed, on the F.M. dail it was entertainment as ususal. The stations were playing music and doing their morning commuter jokes. Not a word of the events occuring in the east of the United States! This was a about 2-3 hours after the planes had hit. I found the Public Radio station and they were broadcasting the events. We rode in silence to my wife's rideshare's house. After I dropped her off I made my way down the highway to my school. Without her feminne presence in the car, I allowed the mantel of my manhood to fall, and the tough interior of the former U.S. Marine to stand at ease, and allowed the tears to fall. I cried for all the lives lost. I cried for the uncertainty of security in which my country grapsed its freedom from. I cried because I could not get my hands to the necks of those whose caused such insecurity to be felt in the hearts of the Amercan people. I then prayed for my country, the President, the Country Leaders, for the families and all those that would greive such a great loss. In class all I could think of was the safety of my family. I left class and called my son and told him to lock the doors and not to answer the door for anybody but a family member. I left school and gathered the other kids from their babysitter and daycare. I then went home and awaited my wife's arrival so that we could all be safe in our home under the protection of Jesus Christ. We sat in our living room watching the repeats of the planes going into the buildings, and listening to the reports. Sitting there in our home, and for the next several days, was like being in the midst of a 24 hours funeral. The pall would not lift. Even the emotions of death of a love one visited us: Anger, guilt, unbelief, denial, grief. They returned once again yesterday, 9/11/2002 watching the programs on t.v. However, this time we know that America will come through this as a better nation. More caring towards others. More unified. Humble. Stronger. And above all, victorious. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had class that day and i remember sitting in my dorm room and my roommate showed up in my room. It was very strange because she was suppose to be in class. When she walked in the room i asked her what she was doing and she said that we were getting attacked so her teacher decided to cancel class. We hurried up and turned on the tv and sure enough her teacher was right. I was so shocked and didn't know what to do. I had a class that morning at 9:30am so i went to it and my teacher hadn't heard about the attack so when students went up to her and asked if we were going to have class she was so shocked that she took us to one of the other halls so that we could watch the news to find out what was going on. My college is near Scott Air Force base so mainly what was going through my mind is where they going to try and attack that base and if they did i knew it would affect us. That day i will never forget, i know that it affected everyone not just the people who lost someone but it affected everyone that is living today. It's scary to know that it happened and it's something that i personally will be telling my kids about.
