I couldn't believe, I thought it was a joke. Then I heard a second plane had crashed in to the second tower and then i got very nervous. They started saying it was a terrorist act and then I thought of my husband. I couldn't get in touch with him so I started asking others in the office if they had heard the news. We were all stunned. I wake the my 14 year old son and my 9 year old daughter up for school. Meanwhile my 2 year old and a 4 a month is waking up to be nursed. At this time the house is in full swing for the day ahead with the news on as always. Daddy leaves for work @ 630. After that I can't hardly remeber in detail what happened next at what time. All I remeber is the news catching my utmost attention. The two older kids are watching and asking me what is going on. are we being attacked or did the plane just crashed?? I couldn't answer them. As everything unfolds I never knew people could harbor such hatred and ignorance towards another human being. The phone rings I say around sometime before 7 am. My girlfriend is the PTA president of a local school. She is frantic and asked if I'm sending my kids to school? I told her I don't know. Should I send them or keep them at home. I was in such confusion and saddness. I was dumbfounded. I kept them home and I immediately called my husband at work. He did no know what had happened. He immediately told his fellow workers. He stayed at work and said if anything else happens he will come home. But try not to let the children watch the news. He told me "I love you". And I said "I love you to". Give the kids all a big hug and kiss and tell them daddy loves each one of them and that everything will alright. That day the world changed and so did I. I fear flying very much. I don't know if I can ever fly again. But I do know My faith is as strong as its ever been and I'm more patriotic. I thank "GOD" for this wonderful country and people. There were two passenger planes that were hijacked and their target was the WTC. The planes hit the tower at approximately 8:45 and 9:02 am. This dramatic event was called September 11th because of terrorist attacks that happened that day. This day will be remembered in people's lives and generations to come. It was a terrifying moment for America and it's many other people. I was in Earth Science class at Barker High School when this event happened. Are class heard about the news from a nearby teacher who came in and told us a plane had hit the WTC building. So are teacher got the controller and turned on the monitor and the TV kept showing the 2nd plane hitting the north building of the trade center. Then they showed another plane crashing into the pentagon. While showing the pentagon attack on the bottom of the screen it said there was an evacuation in the White house. Then when I got to Global class our teacher Mrs. Capen had just talked about the life in Afghanistan and how the woman and children were treated. So then you have a person born in Saudi Arabia who lives in Afghanistan planning attacks on the U.S. All I have to say this was a disgusting and sick idea even if it was a joke or something. Osama Bin laden is on the same boat as Timothy Mcveigh the bomber of the Oklahoma City building. The same thing that happened to Mcveigh is going to happen to Osama as soon as we catch him. People are still mourning a loss of a relative or just a really close friend. America will recover with a lot more strength and people will have high integrity. I saw the north tower fall and there were people running, ash and dust along with papers flying through the air. People just barely got out and some of them did not make it out. There were fireman and policeman-helping people that either got cut and bleeding, burnt severely or were caked with dust and ash. The clean up took around 2 to 7months. There was a lot of rumble even people died in there. After they found people they buried them with American flags. There were not many survivors. Some of the people were in the elevators and on stairwells. People on the planes were make call to there loved ones telling them goodbye and that there plane was headed for the trade center. Also there were people in the buildings making calls telling to their families and shouting to get the attention of the fireman. At first it looked like a really cruel picture someone had drawn so I left to return home. I turned on my radio and there was nothing but confusion and chaos. On the morning of the attacks I had awoke to feed my baby it had been a long night so my husband and three yr old were still fast asleep as I prepard to nurse my baby I turned the tv one and saw the first tower on fire. I screamed for my husband to come down and see. As he came down the second plane stuck the other building. We both watched in silence as there were no words to describe what we were feeling. My husband imeditly ran upstairs grab our three yr old son and said get dressed I am taking you to your friends house. I couldnt move I just held my two boys and watched in horror knowing that at any minute the phone would ring and it would be the air force calling my husband in to protect the rest of our fellow americans. As we got to my friends house he said he loved us and that he woild be home soon. I called my parents to see if they were watching what was happening and all my siblings who are all active duty military members as i walked in, my friend already had her telivsion on and was in tears. I dont rmember crying I just remember a state of shock. All these people in new york in pennsilvania and and at the pentegon lost gone forever and there was nothing we could do just sit and watch and wonder why. So many feelings at one time the feelings of anger hate sadness emptyness fear and a overweling lonlyness. I wondered if we would ever againg be safe when would I see my husband again what about all those people who lost a dad a mom brother sister friend a special love and I was so lucky to be safe with my two children and I couldnt help but to feel guilty who chose them it is so unfair. As I watched the tv all day and thought to myself this is all a bad dream or a movie that is going to end and everything will be normal again. By the time night fell it was time for me to go home and be with my husband and children as i laid there with my husband and two boys it hit me I couldnt stop crying we were no longer safe our worlds and the lives of so many have been changed forever. My husband held me tight and reasured me that there was no way our nation would stand by and let this happen. He was one of the first to go and although he is home safe and sound he will be leaving again soon This war will last for many years and many more lives will be lost and changed forever the only thing I hope that we never forget what happend and we never forget all the soldiers over there right now trying to keep us safe and defend our freedom. If we all stand together the way we did after the attacks no one will ever hurt this great nation again for we are united and untied we are strong and nothing and no one can ever change that. People have often asked me why I don't move away. Isn't hard, they say. Don't you want to spread out, have a lawn? Well, no. I love this dirty city, if I may borrow the line. It practically breaths for me. So where am I when my city is attacked? In the last place I would ever chose to be. EVER. Vegas. Let me explain. I am a pastry chef and my best friend Marilyn, who lives in Houston, is also. There was a big bakery trade show in Vegas and we thought it would be fun to meet there, do some business, have some stupid fun. I could visit my aunt who lives there too. So all is going well. Then Tuesday morning I wake around 7 am which is 10 am in NYC. I am not a morning person, but for some reason, I can't sleep anymore. I turn on the TV. I see some building on fire. Hmmm, that's the Trade Center...what movie is this? Who wants to see Bruce Willis kill the bad guys this early in the morning? So, I switch channels and it's still there. On every channel. And then tower 2 is going down. And then I realize...I get on the phone, shaking, and call Marilyn's room down the hall and scream at her to turn on the tv. And it begins. The horror, the disbelief, the struggle to understand. Trying to think of who I know who works/lives down there. The people in the Windows on the World restaurant...Trying to call everyone, anyone, but no one because there was no getting through to NY. And then the torture of trying to get home. We were supposed to leave the next day and it was clear that was not going to happen. But at that point we had no idea the extent that this tragedy would affect all lives across the country. All the things that we take for granted, like being able to make a phone call, or getting a reservation on a plane, a train, a bus. It all came to a standstill. All the cars were rented. As a matter of fact, people were BUYING cars just to get out of there. But most people there were from the West coast, so it was fairly easy to escape. You couldn't even get past the Hoover Dam to go in the other direction. I was going nowhere. People were telling me how glad they were for me that I was not home. But I was not glad. The only place I wanted to be was home. I felt guilty. Not that I could do anything, but this overwhelming feeling that I was SO not where I was supposed to be was actually painful. And I am not in Boston, say, or Wyoming. I AM IN LAS VEGAS. I am not a gambler, and everything else closed down. No shopping, no shows, no movies, no attractions, only--you guessed it--the casinos. There had to be SOME distractions, I guess. So, in between my zillions of pleading phone calls to airlines--one day the airports are open, the next minute they are closed--we tried not to be angry. We tried to distract ourselves. We ate a lot of Krispy Cremes. We found little triumphs: $30 in quarters falling out of the I Dream of Jeannie slot machine; finally getting out one phone call to nyc to arrange for someone else to make the Bar Mitvah cake for that Saturday's party (which did go on as scheduled); finally, after begging every reservationist I could talk to to just get me anywhere on the east coast, a flight to Miami on Friday. The airport was madness. Thousands of people on long snaking lines, 2 hours just to get to the door of the terminal. Not a person complaining (except for one German guy who seemed to be not from another country, but possibly, another planet), amazing coordination by the airport staff under such unforseeable circumstances. What humaness we are capable of when pressed. We all wondered if any of this benevolence would last. In Florida, I have family, friends. Seeing my beautiful nieces in the airport, I almost lost it. My heart was breaking, and they made me smile. I stayed there a week, healed a little, and came home. I didn't look out the window of the plane. I knew the hole was there. From where I work in New Jersey we could see the smoke coming from the first building. We watched with horror as we saw the 2nd plane come around and hit the 2nd tower. One of my first reactions was to call my folks. They were heading out early that morning to JFK Airport in New York for a flight to Arizona. After many attempts I finally reached them. They had not even heard about what happened and were heading out the front door to drive to the airport. Luckily, I was able to stop them in time. We continued to watch the smoke from the buildings, when we suddenly realized that they began to collapse. I thought about my family and where they were. Were the kids safe in school? I decided the best thing to do was leave them in school and not to pull them out - not to change their routine. I stayed at work until about 2:30 that day trying to find hotels in the New Jersey area for our New York employee's that couldn't get home. I left early to pick the kids up at school that day and the family spent the rest of the day together going over and over the events that had occurred that morning. My flight was scheduled for the morning of September 13, 2001. At about 6A.M. on September 11th, I was awakened by the most crushing phone call of my life. My son, Chris, told me to turn on the TV. As I tried to focus my sleepy eyes, I could see the smoke and flames from the first tower hit. As we silently watched and listened, the second airplane hit the other tower. We finally realized the magnitude of the attack. Terrorism. Everyone screaming, crying, running for their lives. Then, the Pentagon was hit by another plane. The World Trade Center Towers fell...it seemed like they crumbled in slow motion. The huge plumes of smoke and dust and rubble rolled through the streets of New York like a raging storm. I would have been on the same flight that went down in Shanksville, PA...just one week later. God bless all those who gave so much that fateful day. Tell us your story: I was at school in the 4th grade when it happened.The next day my teacher told us about the tradgey and then we started doing lots of drills and started to where I.D badges.I didnt know what the Twin Towers were at the time thats how I didnt react to it,and i didnt think that it was that serious. 5 years later I think that i have a better understanding to 9/11.It really hurts me now to know how many people were killed and how they died.Now I see why we went through so many drills .Now I think of it as a cautious matter.Now my reaction is very serious and thoughtful about it.I think about it every day as if it could have been in my neighborhood and it could have been my love ones killed.Now I wonder why would those people do such thing to people?What point did they try to get across?Why did they risk their own lives?But I'm happy that the United States still came back together. At the time this happened I was getting ready for school (at the time I was in college), I always watched the news and when I turned the T.V on, they just kept showing the planes crashing into the building and I just kept saying is this really happening? Then when I arrived at school they kept talking about it and we were watching it on the news,and finally They announced what was happening on the speaker at school and they dismissed us early. My heart goes out to the children that has lost there mothers and fathers and also to the other families that has lost someone, because that is a hurting feeling its something that stays with you for the rest of your life. Tell us your story: I was busy working at my desk when my co-worker received a call from her husband, telling her that a plane had just crashed into one of the World Trade Center buildings. I remember saying what a terrible accident. My co-worker had not even hung up the telephone when the second plane hit, and we both looked at each other and realized that this was no accident. Everyone in the office rushed to the conference room to see what CNN was announcing about the plane crashes. We all stood in horror as we listened to an account of the attacks and watched the television footage displayed on the screen, only to watch two more tradgic acts. We were all shaken by the news. And it brought back some terrible memories of many of my co-workers that lost friends in the Oklahoma City bombing. A decision was made to close our office for the remainder of the day due to safety concerns. But I'm proud to say that we have been back to work each day since, including this day of remembrance - September 11, 2002. It is our way of showing America that we will not be broken. I guess it is like my parents' generation, how they can all remember where they were when JFK was shot. It was around 7:15 am or so Mountain Time, and I came down the stairs to carpool with my roommate to campus. She came running up to me and said "America is being attacked! Some one is bombing us or something!" She had just turned on the radio in her room, and hadn't heard much, only that something had hit the WTC and the Pentagon. I remember that I didn't believe her. I thought that she must have it wrong, somehow, because no one would ever dare attack the US. Finally, she persuaded me to turn on the TV. The first thing I saw was a live picture of the Pentagon, smoldering. As I watched in horror, it slowly began to dawn on me that I was watching this live on the BBC (why does everyone have an English accent?) so I turned it to CNN in hopes of more updated news, where I heard about the planes. The first tower fell as we were putting on our shoes and getting ready to leave. Campus was pretty deserted, and of the classes that were being held, mostly it just involved sitting around and watching the news. By 2 pm all of the classes were canceled, and everyone was in the campus bar, drinking and keeping vigil on the news. The bar was so quiet for being so full. That really got to me. Sometimes someone would start to cry, or get angry, but mostly we all sat in stunned silence. And I kept thinking, "This is history. My grandkids are going to hear about this, and not really think too much about the fact that I was alive then, the way I don't think too much about my grandparents being alive for Pearl Harbor." Tell us your story: I had just woken up and turned on CNN to watch the news as I do every morning.I saw the regular journalists talking away and I was not paying much attention until the female reported screamed as they showed a live image of the World Trade Centre tower with smoke billowing from its side.I was very shocked and just thought to myself how something like this could happen to the most secure and powerful country in the world.I called my mother who was shopping dwontown and told her about it.I was concerned for my father and 2 siblings who live on Long Island,and spend most of their day in Manhattan.I called my father,with many failed attempts because people from everywhere were calling their loved one's in New York as well.I spent most of the day worrying for my father,and comforting my friends and other family.I remember going downtown mid-day to see it quiet and bare, with hoards of people crowded at the Convent Market and London Tower watching the news.I turned to the church for prayer,and prayed for the lives lost and for the safety of my father and siblings,and the recovery of all those who were injured.I remember returning home with my mother and picking up my other siblings form school and heading for the train station,since flights were cancelled throught North America.We didnt make it very far,and stopped in Niagara Falls for the night.We returned the following day to London,and continued to call my father,but with no luck.We were in tears and pain,assuming the worst for our family.Luckily we did get a call from my father on the 22nd,but with bad news.My sister,Maria,had been hurt very badly while they were evacuating her school just a block or so from the towers.She had a broken leg and fractured arms and a concussion to her head.Fortunately,she recovered 7 months later and they returned to London for a visit.They stayed with us for Christmas and most of spring.They did return to New York in April,and in September 2002,we all traveled to New York and attended the service at Battery Park.It was my first time in New York and it was that much more special and sad to remember all the lives lost and hopes faded.Thank you for allowing me to share my story and God Bless you,America,and the people of the world.We will never forget. As I walked into my second period class, and the tv was on and i saw a plane hitting a building. We regulary go to mass about once a month, this is ironic because september 11 was the day we celebrated our mass, for opening school. We heard an announcemt over the PA in the middle of mass to return to our classes. Everyone paniced and ran back to their classes. All the TV's were on with the NEWS. The kids paniced and rushed to payphones and cell phones. Every one called parent's and left. School was empty. I didnt want to go to school I was mad. I was in shock because i never thought that anything like this could happen during my life time. While watching this i started to feel pain for the people that were trapped in the building. I don't think anyone would have ever thought of this happening to the Word Trade Towers. Then after it was all over it began all over again. The towers collapsed and now I felt the full impact of what happened. All that remains are the memories, pictures, and feelings inside. I wish that i could have reached out and helped those families who lost the loved ones in there lives. I cant even begin to imagine how they feel and I hope i never have to. through all this pain and suffering we became more united as one nation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was in my classroom teaching math, when a student entered the classroom with a note from the office. When I opened the letter, it briefly stated that there had been an attack on American soil. The letter also mentioned that parents would probably start to pick up their children early. Other than that, the letter was very evasive. As the day continued, my class started to wonder why several parents had come to pick up their children, seeing that this was not a normal behavior. I told my students that when they went home, that they should watch the news. I also told them that I was truly unaware of all the details, and would have more clarity once I was able to watch the news. At the close of school, I immediately ran and turned the television on. Needless to say that I was shocked regarding the days events. I was also afraid, for I have a good friend who resides in New York. I was worried about his safety, for he is a policeman there. I tried to call him, but in light of what had occurred, I was unable to get through. I left an e-mail message for him to contact me whenever he had the opportunity. In about a 24hr period, he called me to let me know that he was okay. I can't describe how emotional I was after seeing what had taken place. It is truly a day in history that I will never forget.
