Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was supposed to be a very happy day. It was my daughter's 18th birthday! It was the first year that she wasn't at home to celebrate it with us as she was a Freshman at the University of Alabama. I kid her about her birthdays being so dramatic. She was born on the first ever "Grandparent's Day" which made it every special for the new grandparents. And, now, this on her 18th. Because this national tragedy happened on her birthday, we'll never be able to forget it! I remember the horror as I watched everything unfold in a waiting room in our Outpatient Center. I couldn't believe something like this happened! I was saddened for the families who lost loved ones on the planes as well as in the office buildings. I felt the horror that those jumping out of windows and being trapped on the floors must have felt. I felt the hopelessness that the victims' families must have felt. I went to my office and cried for all of these and myself. This type of thing made me want to gather all of my family around me to make sure they were safe. It was very hard that my daughter was 3 1/2 hours away. We must have talked on the phone a dozen times that day. As the days unfolded, I got angry! I got angry at the terrorists who did this! I was angry at media that wouldn't leave the victims' families alone. It's like they all wanted to have the "exclusive" story. I was angry at those who tried to "cash in" on our loss, i.e., gas prices rising a $1.00 a gallon in a matter of several hours, rumors of a huge reduction in gas supplies, so that everyone ran to get gas at these escalated prices, as well as other tactics/products sprang up. I was angry at the money swindling scams that erupted with everyone soliciting funds for the "victims". Many of these were not legitimate. And, in some way, I have grown to be angry at some of the victims' families. I think it's a sick world we live in when some people try to say their loved one died in the Trade Center to cash in on the money and the person was found to be alive elsewhere. I am also very upset with some of the victims' families that said $1.2 million + just "wasn't enough." Think about all of the people who die everyday in America. Many without any type of savings or life insurance whatsoever. The majority of the people in the World Trade Center and most on the planes were business people employed by big name corporations who provided life insurance free and plans where you could purchase more! No one compensates the ones who die every day without anything. I don't recall that all the victims of the Oklahoma Federal Building bombing getting in the millions of dollars from the government! This was not the governments fault! Society today needs to learn that tragedies happen for which we are not prepared for. But, life must go on and we do whatever it takes to keep going. No one, but the terrorists are responsible for what happened on 9/11. If will always be a somber day on September 11. Even as the years roll on and Americans become numb and don't remember as well, I'll always remember for it was also my daughter's 18th birthday! I was supposed to go to class on the morning of Sept. 11, but then my teacher called and told me to stay home. She told me of frightening stories about Muslims working in Washington D.C. being harassed. After the phone call, I immediately turned on the TV and gaped at the horrifying scene like many other Americans. Later that day, my dad came home early and said that he heard the explosion at the Pentagon while he was in his class at the National Defense University, just across the Potomac River from the Pentagon. For several weeks, my dad, who's in the U.S. Air Force, warned my mom and I not to go anywhere. He especially warned us not to go to commissary at Fort Belvoir. The servicemen there wouldn't be happy to see two women wearing hijab shopping alongside them. I felt helpless staying at home. Like many others, I wanted to reach out and help. So a couple of months later, I organized a blood drive in my neighborhood to honor the victims of 9/11. Tell us your story: Preface: I grew up 35 miles Northeast of NYC and at the time of the attack, I worked for a company that rented medical equipment to hospitals. I was sitting on Route 3 South in Massachusetts. I had just turned on 1030 WBZ radio to get an update on the traffic. The first thing that I heard when I turned on the news was a live news feed from NYC talking about how a plane had crashed into the WTC. As I sat there listening to the radio, I began to glance around to see if anyone was listening. Much to my surprise, it looked as if no one around me had heard. I immediately got off at the next exit and took many back roads to get to my office. As I pulled up, I saw all of my co-workers huddled around the TV we had in the office. As I stepped up to the TV, I was told that a second plane had hit the second tower. At this point, my heart dropped. All I could think about were all of my friends in NY that I had grown up with. More than likely, most of them now worked in NYC. For the next several hours, we watched as the events of the day unfolded live in front of us on the TV. One co-worker left early so that she could take her children out of school. By 2pm, I knew that my co-workers and myself would be called to help out as much as possible. I had all of my co-workers getting every piece of respiratory equipment prepared and loaded into every vehicle we had. I knew that we would be called to deliver the equipment into NYC. By 3pm, the corporate office had called and told us to get ready and head to NYC. I turned to my co-workers and told them what had been asked of us. I said that two of us would have to go to NYC. I said that I couldn't ask them to go, so I had volunteered myself and was asking for one other to help out. Another co-worker said he would go. I was hesitant to let him because he and his wife had just adopted a beautiful boy and I didn't want anything to happen. He still wanted to go. Sometime around 5pm, I was finally able to call my parents on my cell phone. Up until that point, all of the cell phone circuits were busy. On the first ring, my parents picked up the phone. When they heard my voice, they sounded so happy to hear me. I really had not had the time to get hold of them earlier in the day because we were busy getting ready. When my mother heard the background noise and realized that I was on my cell phone, she asked if I was headed to NYC. I told her that we were asked to deliver everything that we had and I volunteered myself to go. The phone went quiet for about 10 seconds then she said she understood. All that she asked is that I call every now and again to tell her that I was safe. By 5:30pm we were passing trough Connecticut. It seemed eerily calm on the highway; it was pretty much deserted except for our two vehicles and the state police. By the time that we had reached the New York/Connecticut border, the corporate office had called us, re-directing us to Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. The amount of people coming out of the WTC wasn't was high as expected, so the government was making Giants Stadium into a triage center so that more rescue workers and equipment could get to the WTC. By 6:30pm, we were once again re-directed, this time to the company's New Jersey office. The need for the equipment at Giants Stadium had gone down because there were no survivors coming out of the wreckage. Around 8pm, we finally arrived at the New Jersey office. As I was unloading my vehicle, I heard my cell phone ring. I didn't answer it because I was busy. When I finally hopped back into the truck, I saw that I had missed about 20 phone calls, all from the same number, my parents. I called the number back and my dad picked up instantly. He was angry because he couldn't get hold of me. This was the first time in my life that I have ever heard my father afraid. His voice kept breaking as he talked to me. I heard from my mother the next day that he wasn't home when I called at 5pm, he was still working. When he got home, my mother was staring at the TV mesmerized. My dad had asked what had happened and she told him that I was headed to NYC to help out. He looked at her like she was kidding, but he realized that she wasn't. He couldn't believe how calm she was. She said that she had had over 2 hours to come to grips with it. I finally got home around 1am on September 12. I wasn't going to call my parents, but I figured that I should. My dad picked up the phone again on the first ring. He sounded so relieved to here my voice. If anyone knows the NY/NJ border area at Route 17 South in Mahwah, as I was passing from 17 South to Interstate 287 South, I could see the smoke from the WTC there. If you know this area, it is a tremendous distance from the site. I want to thank all of the people that helped out in any fashion during all of the cleanup and recovery. My heart goes out to all the wives, husbands, and especially the children left behind from the attack. Tell us your story: I woke around 9:30 in the morning to the sounds of plane after plane flying in to land in an airport located a few miles from my home. I thought this was really strange since it was such a small airport that only had a few arrivals and departures in a 24 hour period, yet I heard 6 or 7 in 10 minutes. so I woke up and opened my front door, and at first I thought to myself this is the most beautiful day I ever remember, the sky was an imaculate blue, and the breeze of the ocean swept through the streets, then almost as quickly as that feeling came I felt the second, the streets we're lined with people talking, some crying, and the soudns of news played on my neighbor's tv set's. I knew something was wrong, but what? Me not being a real television fanatic I had no cable so I had no clue, then the telephone rang, it was my wife, she said something terrible had just happened in new york city. I thought, how could this be affecting a beach city 500 miles away? then she started to shade in the story, and my heart fell to the floor. I had just taken Casey to the doctors and dropped him off at school. I arrived home around 9:00 a.m. I turned on my favorite news channel, the "Today" show and they were showing video tape of the first tower that was struck. I immediately jumped on the phone and called Aunt Linda's where Aunt Donna and Mamaw were and told them to turn on the T.V. the World Trade Center had just been struck by a plane. As I stood there with them on the phone and wathcing the T.V. I witnessed the second plane hitting the second tower. I just said, "Oh my God!" and told them I had to go. I just went and sat down in disbelief. I sat there all day, they wanted me to come over but I was glued to the T.V. As I sat there through the morning I saw what happened to the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. I wondered what the heck was going on and who would do something like this. I watched the whole thing unfold on T.V. I must have said, "Oh, my God" a hundred times that day as the towers collapsed and all that happened on T.V. right in front of me. Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Well, it makes you think about how much people's lives can change in a split second. I think I appreciate the firemen, policemen and emergency workers so much more when you see how they put their lives on the line everyday they go to work. Even though our family didn't know anyone that lost their life that day I feel their pain and grieve for them. Another way its changed is being much more aware of my surroundings and who's doing what and just watching out more. And just talking about it makes me cry. What do you think you should be remembered about September 11th? All the lives that were lost, all the INNOCENT lives that were lost. Children on those airplanes that probably didnt even know what terrorist means or what it is. And moms, dads, sisters, brothers and friends just all those 2819 lives that were lost. Did you fly an American flag after the events of Septmeber 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes we did fly an American flag. We put them on our cars and on a tree in the front yard. Well, I think that we shouldn't take our freedom for granted and to always be proud to be an American and not to be afraid to show it. It is so sad to know that we cannot live as a loving group of people no matter race, religion, beliefs, and so on. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home, getting ready for work that day. It was a day like any other. I had just gotten my daughter off to school. I sat down to watch some television, when I saw the horror start. I watched as the towers were hit. In front of my own eyes! At first I just watched. Then I realized it was really happening, and I cried. Cried for those that were dying, crying for those families losing these loved ones, and cried for all those in the United States being affected. It was all I could do to go to work that day. The day dragged endlessly without no end. I felt sick for all those around. All day people were coming into the store telling of their own views of what was happening. None seeming to really understand the fullness of the tragedy. I felt the regrets in those that came in with fear of their own loved ones that might be there, and hoping all the time that it would end real soon. One lady came in that day with such greyness to her face. I asked her if I could help ease her pain, and she informed me that her husband was in New York on business. She was trying all morning to get through and find out if he was okay. I wanted to hold her and all the world until the pain went away. But knew that the only thing that I could do was sit numbly by the radio and listen to the horror story being laid out before the world. Them later on that morning it came across the news that Pennsylvania had been attacked to. My heart went through my feet, as I realized that it was close to where my son and grandson lived. I thought I would just die if my family had been killed. The day dragged endlessly as I waited for the end of my work day, and then the ride home to be over. Thanks be to the good lord that they were okay when my husband and I called. Then later on that same day, my daughter came home screaming and crying for her father. When I got her to calm down, I realized that the problem was, was that we needed to find out about her father because he was delivering to the towers that day and might be dead. The fear in her eyes, and the trembling in her voice, sent chills to the bone. When we received the call later that night that he was okay, it was a bright light being shed upon the home. Joyous tears for one life saved, but tears of hurt and anger for those lives lost. We all prayed that night for the lives that had been lost, and for the families around the world not only that had lost loved ones, but had in one way or another been affected by the tragedy. To this day a strange and unknown pain still washes over the hearts of my family as we remember how close we also came to losing fmaily in the senseless slaughter that happened on that tragic day of September 11, 2001, when the world stood still, and we pray every day for the families to be healed one day from the sufferings of that day. Tell us your story: i was sitting at home doing my laundry when I received a call from my mother in demarst nj, my father was on an american airlines flight out of new jersey, the flight left right after the doomed flight that hit one of the towers. he remembers being on the run way with the other jet before take off. we lost track of my fathers flight routed to chicago, i received a call from my sister crying about my fathers safty, little did she know that her pain was just beginng. she is from manalapan nj , one of the hardest hit areas in nj. my nieces friends lost parents, my sister lost frinds, soccer coaches and her feelings of security. my father was found safe, rerouted to another town. he rented a car and made it back home saftly to nj. for me , my sence of safty will never be the same because i lived through the oklahoma city bombing, my husband is a doctor here in okc and he was on standby at the hospital. the pain we lived through that day was hard to leave behind with so many lives lost but to relive it again in an area that i grew up in is like adding salt to the wound. there is a lot of evil in the world but not as much evil as there is love, i have seen it in both places. people are beautiful. we have proven that we can make this world a better place. the little things in life are to be appreciated , family is most imporant and living with grace and helping others, the best medicine, im proud of both oklahoma city and new ork for their examples to the world of courage, strength ,unity and grace. may we all in the world go forth with such grace and dignity and then this world just might stand a chance. As you turn on the television; you are trying to get dressed for work, you can't believe what you are hearing and seeing. More attacks, the pentagon and then a plane went down in PA. Our President being flown all over the place and our Vice President being hidden. This can't be true...but it was. All day long you listen to the radio; trying to work, you come home to listen more to the television. So much death.... for what? Why would anyone do this to America, a country so loving and giving and helpful to others. Anyone who needed help, America would help and now we had been attacked. Flags came out, hanging from homes,on businesses, on cars, on freeways, banners and signs..... God Bless America.......United We Stand....and our heros.........As we unite today and honor the 1st anniversary, it seems it has actually been harder, as last year we were in shock, this year we are full of emotion for all the lives that were lost. But again we must say thank you to all the Firefighters and Police Officers who were there to help to rescue people in the Twin Towers and finally to the heros of Flight 93 who had the courage to overpower the terrorists and bring their plane down in a field in PA. Tell us your story: The day, September 11, 2001 started just like any other day for me: I got up in the morning, took a shower, got dressed, and sat down to eat my breakfast and when I finished eating my breakfast I brushed my teeth and finished getting dressed and then I went to the living room where I waited for my ride to pick me up and take me to work. Fortunately I did not have to wait for very long because my ride arrived and we went to work at the library where we signed in after we arrived and began preparing to greet the patrons who were waiting outside for the library to open up and since we still had about 20 or 25 minutes left before we opened up, my coworkers and I went to the staff room where we drank some coffee and talked for a while and that was when time came to a standstill for me because at exactly 9:15, a.m., on the morning of September 11, 2001 one of the librarians came into the staff room with a look of horror and disbelief on her face. Naturally, we all asked her what was wrong and at first our message did not register, so to speak, because she just stood there with her mouth agape, so we asked her a second time and the first words out of her mouth were, "Gentlemen you are not going to believe me! An airplane has just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City!" Upon hearing this, our first reaction was that of shock as well as disbelief and we all just stood there-including myself dazed, as if were in a trance and before long I broke out in a cold sweat. After that I tried to speak, but couldn't because my mouth was so dry that I could not speak. At first I did not, could not believe what she had just said until she said, "If you all don't believe me, then just watch the news on TV!" And we did and that was when I saw the tragic scene being played out right before my very eyes. At that point, all of us, myself included just stood there looking at the images on the TV screen and at each other and then I suggested that we all observe one minute of silence in memory of the victims and I also suggested that we all say a prayer in memory of the victims. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had been placed on bedrest the last weeks of my pregnancy and was asleep when the phone range shortly after 6:00 PST. My cousin, Michelle, was calling to tell me to turn on the TV, that the Towers had just been hit. I laughed at her and told her to quit teasing, that I wasn't going to fall for her joke. She told me she wasn't joking, and in the tone she used, I knew she was serious. So, I turned on the TV and didn't stop watching the footage for the next week. I couldn't sleep, I couldn't do anything but stare in disbelief at the news as I watched the footage of the planes hitting the towers over and over and over again. Then when I was watching, the first tower fell and a few minutes later, the second tower fell. I remember the tears springing to my eyes as I realized that all those people died as they were trying to escape. I imagined how I would have felt as I tried to run down the stairs, feeling panicked as people went slow in front of me. I would have wanted to push people out of the way, so I could get to safety. I can imagine people all felt the same way, but acted so differently. I am constantly inspired by the stories I hear of strangers helping others and hope that if I were in the face of danger and fear as they were, I would have the courage to be as noble and brave as they who gave their lives for others. My son wasn't born until October 10, 2001, and I think he was so overdue because maybe I couldn't give birth to him until I was more composed. Jokingly I tell people that he could hear the news footage in utero, and he was scared to be born into a world so evil and wicked. He is the light of my life, bringing me joy daily as he learns to walk and say a few words. I know that he has been my gift from God to help my heart heal and restore my hope in humanity. God bless America and all those who gave their lives to help their brother survive to go home to their families, for they really were the perfect example of our Savior's perfect love for us all. My teacher had the radio on which was very unlike her. I was one of the first into the room and as my other classmates walked into the room, who also had no idea what was going on, they asked what was going on. My teacher began to explain that a plane had flown into one of the Twin Towers. I didn't think anything of it at the time. "Planes crash, I thought, "One just happened to hit the tower." I didn't really understand what was going on. Then she said that nobody knew why it hit or anything but then another one hit. Nobody really knew what was going on but they thought it was a terrist attack. It was all very shocking and I had never experienced anything like it before so I didn't really understand what was going on. I was 9 months pregnant and due on the 13th of September, and I had contractions all weekend long. It was about 8:00am that morning and I was watching cartoons with my daughter, and I was still having contractions. We didnt get any local channels so I didnt know anything was going on. I called my grandmother who live right down the road, about 10:00am that morning, and I told her to be on the lookout and that I might need her to watch my daughter. She said ok, and isnt awful was happened. I said what happen, she said arent you watching tv, i said yes but im watching cartoons with her. And she started telling me what was going on and i was shocked. I couldnt believe something like that had happened. And of course i couldnt watch it no local channels. I was just stunned. I kept having contractions and i called my husband to let him know to come home we were going to the hospital. In the mean time i put my daughter down for a nap, and I took a shower. While i was in there i just couldnt believe everything that was going on. I got out of the shower, got ready, got my daughter ready, and waited for my husband to come home. He got home, he washed up, and we were on our way. I dropped my daughter off at my aunts, and then went through mcdonalds drive through,(my husband was hungry). So we went to the hospital and they admitted me. I asked the doctor if my child would be born on this day, and he said no, the baby should come after midnight, so that realived me. But guess what, the baby didnt wait. My son Kolten was born 9:35PM that evening. I just was amazed. With everything wrong, and people losing their family, friends, and loved ones, i had a beautiful baby boy in my hand. We had brought another living soul in this world. I worked the 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. shift and was still sleeping that morning at about 9:15 a.m. (Est) when my telephone rang. Generally, I would let my voice mail pick up my early calls, because they ususally were telemarketers with a sales pitch I just didn't want to hear about. But on this particular morning, that ringing of my phone seemed different. I answered. My friend Michelle was on the other end. "Turn on your T.V. right now!" she said. "A plane has just crashed into one of the twin towers in New York." Still not quite awake, I must have answered with..."What did you say?" "Debbie, just turn on your damn T.V., it's horrible", she shouted. With my remote phone still in my hand, I ran to the living room and turned on the T.V. There is was, in living, breathing, color. The news man looking serious, like the times when presidents have been shot, or when annoucing that we are going to war. Somehow I could not get my mind to grasp what had happened. It was playing out before me like a plot to a movie I had already seen. My friend was still talking on the phone that was now glued to my ear. I don't think I heard anything she said. Truthfully, I thought I might be dreaming! Unfortunately, I was not. The rest of that day played out like a dream, however. My daughter was in school. Do I need to go get her? Where do I go? What do we do? Are we next? My mom, she lives 100 miles away! WHAT DO I DO????!!!!I called her immediately. I live on a now closed Air Force Base, and many of us who reside here have jokingly said that what if our enemies abroad don't know that this is a closed military base, we would definitely be a target in a bombing strike. Now that joking comment came back to haunt many of us. This is a day I will remember always. It is the day that changed my feelings of security and isolation from the harsh realities that we are not exempt as a nation from war in our own country. Left for work at 7:00am to go to our meeting that day at 7:30am. I was 6 months pregnant at the time, and it was a very happy time in my life. My husband was facing his first baby (boy) and as happy as can be about it. Our first break from the meeting came up at 10:00am as I walked out of the room in to the "break/lunch" room, the TV was on....and tons of people standing around it, I of course wondered what all the commotion was all about as I squeezed in between people to see it (being pregnant it was not easy). Then I saw......my heart fell to the floor, and the blood from my head ran down to my feet. I stood there and watched in horror and I could not belive what I saw. Being emotional enough as it was with horomones flowing through me, I felt like all those people were my family. I feel for everyone of you who lost someone that day....I too have lost a loved one. Not that day, but it was over 20 yrs ago, I was 9 yrs old, my brother was 10. My brother, whom had a rough life I found, had commited suicide at age 10. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My son, Matt, had just started his freshman year at Columbia University. He e-mailed us with an exciting, but scary story. He had been asleep in bed when one of the other kids on the floor came in and said something happened at the WTC. Matt jumped out of bed, threw on some clothes, and got a train downtown. He was able to get about 10 blocks from the WTC just as the 1st tower collapsed. He tried to get closer,but was told to turn around and go back by the police. He was covered with dust when he arrived back at school, just after the collapse of the second tower. He said it was the most amazing thing he'd ever witnessed. He spent many Saturdays over the past year,walking thru the area, making friends with the clean up crews, hoping to get a piece of the rubble in rememberance.
