I had just arrived at work when I heard about the first plane hitting the tower. I remember thinking that it was just a small plane and thinking that it really wasn't a big deal. Looking back I realize how selfish of a thought that was. At the time though no one realized what horrible day this would turn out to be and being from a small town in Indiana I especially didn't realize how closely I would be affected by all of this. As the morning got more horrific I could only think that I needed to know that my little girl and husband were alright. I think everyone probably thought the same thing even though logically I knew they weren't in harms way. My little girl was with her babysitter who is also a close friend so I knew she was fine, but my husband drives a semi and was about two hours from home. I remember fealing so relived that he was back only to find out that he was leaving in only a couple of hours to go to New York. My husband also drives chartered buses and he had been asked to drive FEMA to the disaster site. All I could think about was the fact that he was going to be so close to the danger. He kept telling me that he would be fine and that he would be back soon and I could only think that so many people in those buildings told their loved ones that they would be home soon and so many never returned home. My husband did come back ten days later. He and all the FEMA workers came home to a heros welcome. I've never felt prouder of him. I know that he saw some horrible things while he was there, some I'm sure I still hasn't told me about and may never will, but I'm sure that if asked to go again he would in a heartbeat. Like so many others I didn't personally know anyone that lost their life that day, but I feel like have a connection with so many. Three days ago was the one year anniversary and just like last year my husband was in his semi, my little girl was about to go to the sitters, and I was about to go to work only on this Sept. 11th I made sure I hung the flag out before I left. Normally, I would go straight past the front room and into the dining room to use the computer, but for no particular reason I decided to turn the telly on in the front room. What I saw was a shock and I did not understand it. An aeroplane flying into the side of the World Trade building? It looked as though it was straight out of an action movie. Slowly I realised it was real as the commentary told of the entire horrific and tragic truth. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My 9/11 narrative is already on this site. I'm a native New Yorker who has lived in the DC area for some time now. In September 2001 I spent time in New York as well as spending several harrowing hours on the bus with others like me, trying to get home while the Pentagon (which is not far from me) was burning and lives were being lost. I also spent time in NYCity 2 weeks after 9/11 -- and that terrible sad time is also burned into my soul. What is it like 5 years later? I still pass the Pentagon every day. I look at the totally restored building and think of those lives that are never to be restored, or those burned hands and faces and limbs that will never be restored, and that trust in life that is never to be restored, and I realize that MANY children who were born on or near that fateful day are now old enough to understand in a limited way, what we are commemorating today. IDO NOT want them or their Children's children to ever forget this -- just as I DO NOT want them or their childrens children to ever forget Women's Fight for Equality, or the Holocaust, or the Afro American struggle for Equality, or the Struggle for LGBT Rights, or September 11, 2001. What will we be struggling for in the future? Will we be working VERY hard for Peace, realizing that it begins in each one of our hearts and souls??? Will it be realizing that if we deliberately shortchange someone, or steal from them, or slander them, or bump them in the street or push them on the subway, or make fun of the way they look or talk or dress -- that we are dividing ourselves from one another -- setting the stage for anger, hatred, and revenge??? How much easier it would be to move over to one side, smile, ACCEPT each others' differences, get away from irritating people instead of confronting them (never fight a bear in its own cave!) and, as my mother used to say "Smile at that stranger -- be nice to that stranger (unless of course they are about to do something Very Bad to you! Then RUN!) for you NEVER know what that other person may be suffering!" So every day I pass the Pentagon, and in my minds eye I still remember the utter devastation where there is now a restored facade. I think of those people who were standing at their fax machines or sipping their morning cuppa at their desk -- who were suddenly confronted by melted hands (burned by the jet fuel) broken bones, and/or a mad dash down a dark hallway reeking with jet fuel fumes, and possibly a dash to a certain death. I think of those people in the planes who may or may not have known that their plane was about to disintegrate, that they were about to die in a nanosecond. Those innocents in the World Trade Center, suddenly being confronted with the worst possible hell on earth coming through their windows, visiting death and destruction in the twinkling of an eye. The Towers may be gone, but those memories will resonate there, forever. I think of the wives, husbands, loved ones, kids, kitties, pups, all waiting for their loved one to come home from another work-day at the World Trade Center -- and the terrible shock of discovering that their loved one is gone....... That peaceful field in Pennsylvania, becoming the deadly resting place for yet another plane filled with innocent victims, killed by terrible evil...... September 11 - that terrible day of destruction -- will never again be just an Ordinary Day. This day is a shrine -- and should be a vow for us to promise starting NOW -- to work together perpetually, for peace and healing as we all did in those terrible dark days and weeks after that day that pure evil was visited upon us. I live not far from the Pentagon. On the night of September 10, 2006, I saw the Pentagons illumination ceremony from my windows -- 184 beams of light to commemorate each life lost in the attack on the Pentagon. The beautiful beams of light spread upwards in a huge fan shape and in the middle of all these beams of light the full rising moon itself lent a tribute it was blood-orange red, and was so precisely poised in the middle of those beams of light that for one second, I thought it was part of the illumination itself. No it was Mother Nature herself lending her own tribute to this rite of sorrow and commemoration. Ten years from now, where will we be? At about 10:00 all the teachers went in the hallway and like 30 seconds later Mr. Davis the principal came on the loud speaker and anounnced that the Trade Towers and the Pentagon just got hit. Then my taecher cut on the TV and let us see what was going on. Almost immediatley some of the kids started crying cause some of their parents worked at the Pentagon and some of their parents was in New York. I started to fell lucky and scared at the same time. My mom didn't work near the Pentagon or in New York but my mothers cusin did. So I called and made sure she was alright. Fortunely she was already evacuated before the planes hit. A co-worker from up front came back to my area and announced "the world trade center has just been bombed". I didn't think much about it at that time. Then various people started to buzz and I paid more and more attention. I finally called my mother who is retired and asked her, "is something going on out there in the world? Turn on your TV and call me back". I turned on my own radio just in time to hear Peter Jennings being testy with someone around him. Then he announced that one of the towers had fallen. He had to stop talking for a moment, obviously awed by the unbeliveable sight. I said to those around me, "Peter Jennings just announced that building fell." Then I heard the announcement that all planes were to land wherever they were. This must be really serious, I said to a co-worker. Shortly afterwards, someone came by and told us they had live coverage on a big screen TV one floor above. A co-worker and I went up to look. When I saw the pictures of the towers crashing it really hit me. "There were people in there, someone's mother, someone's husband or wife, somebody's child, a lot of them, were in that building. Throughout the day as I saw again the tumbling giants, I felt sorrier somehow for the hypothetical images that must have come true a thousand times that day: the retired mom, who sat down to watch the news with a cup of coffee and saw the tower fall-a place where her very proud son or daughter worked. The image of a pre-schooler waiting impatiently for his mom to pick him up at five o'clock..and mom was in the tower. Reading it again now, my eyes fill with tears like it was all yesterday. My heart breaks for those so profoundly impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. ________________________________________ I just need to share this with everyone. I am having so much trouble handling all of this. Just when I think I have it together, I see or hear a story so personal, so painful, that it is all I can do keep from breaking down again. I was a Marine. I am a strong man fully capable of controlling my emotions. But this devastation is so pervasive, so incidious, so horrid that I feel like my heart cannot possibly contain it all. Yesterday, in an instant, someone's entire world was destroyed. A young man, perhaps, already missing his wife or partner, wishing the flight that took them away would hurry home. Instead, in a moment of horror, he watched his most significant other vanish in a ball of flame and debris and hate. In a flash, more than a plane disappeared. Gone was the promise to "see you soon." Gone were a million secrets shared between them... the private joke about the loud waiter... the song they danced to last weekend at that corner bar... the color they planned to paint the kitchen. Across town, a Mom sat stunned. Below her, her children played, oblivious to the thief that had slipped in and stolen their happiness. They are too young to understand, you see. But in the years to come, they will fully come to appreciate the horror of this day. The damage to their lives will be done not in a flash, but in the sadness of days to come. "Your Dad would have been so proud of you," Mom will say at every important event. And the tears will flow again, a wound as raw and jagged as the moment it was inflicted. These are just some of the thoughts that are tearing me to pieces right now. I feel so much pain, like the very fabric of our souls have begun to unravel. I know we will recover. I know we will find peace again, and happiness. Right now, though, those things seem like some impossible dream. I am a flight attendant, and to awake to such a horrific story was overwhelming. Although five years have passed, I find that as we remember this infamous day today, September 11, 2006, that those feelings still feel "fresh", especially when recalling the horrible events of that morning. At the time this tragedy occurred, I was our chair for AFA, The Association of Flight Attendants, at Alaska Airlines for our Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP). In this role, I spent month's of follow-up with our flight attendants~~tending to their emotional needs with referrals, CIRP debriefing's and diffusings, and in some cases, crying with my peers. Our peer CIRP team reached out to our fellow crewmembers at United (same union) and American. As crew, we share feelings and fears with our peers that are sometimes difficult to explain to "civilians". To this day, I can only begin to imagine what those crews went through when they realized they were being used as "human weapons" in an aluminum tube! The devastation, the loss, and the thousands of Americans that lost loved ones can never be replaced; however, my hope would be that American would continue to show their resolve and honor those lost on 9/11 with carrying on in the courageous manner each and every man, woman, and child did that fateful morning. As I continue to put on my uniform and step on that plane, trip after trip, there is a brief moment of reflection on my part, of all four crews from 9/11. With the continued security threats made to our country, we have revamped our security protocal in the aviation airplane as we now know an enemy that we had never "met" before. With this in mind, I am honored to serve in a workforce that produced "heroes" in their own way, on the morning of September 11th, 2001. I was setting out on my first travel assignment as an ER Nurse. I was going to do a mini New York vacation before heading to Maine for my assignment. I am plagued with thoughts of what would have happened if I would have left a day sooner or if things happened a day later. Where would I have been? What would I have done if I would have been there... in NYC? Since then I have visited all sites... WTC, Shanksville, and the Pentagon. The WTC in Decmeber of 2001 was a smoldering mess of debris that sent a stench through the streets that if I close my eyes I can still smell. When the world starts to complain and such about America's actions since then, and I find myself questioning things I close my eyes and take myself back to September 11 and my walk in NYC on December 17th. I get chills and then remember that for those people lost we MUST go to the ends of the Earth to stop anything else from ever happening again. I have dedicated myself to working with the Disaster prepardness in my hospital and the plans we would have in place if.... We drill and plan for a day that I hope never comes. Tell us your story: On the morning of 9-11, my husband, Cornell Roberts, and I were scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. business meeting at the World Trade Center. We had planned to travel from Virginia to New York CITY on the previous afternoon and had scheduled to stay in a NYC hotel. Since neither of us had ever visted inside the WTC, we made plans to enjoy a light breakfast on the top floor of the WTC at about 8:30 a.m. We told no one of of our plans- not family nor friends. ( not an usual thing for us, as we often traveled without telling anyone) THE ONLY REASON WE ARE HERE TODAY IS DUE TO A TWIST OF FATE! I became violently ill due to something I ate on Monday morning, so we canceled our plans for September 11th. Had we carried out our plans we surely would have been killed. I shutter to think about how our family and friends would have anguished over our being missing and the not knowing where we could possibly be. (Cornell says he thinks he casually mentioned to a friend some weeks earlier that we had planned to visit NYC but wasn't sure.) We will never again, make travel plans without letting someone know of our whereabouts. We are grateful to God almighty, that we are here to tell our story but, first and foremost, to express our deepest sympathies to all those families touched by the tragedy. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Last year on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I witnessed the unfortunate tragedy in many unique ways. On the exact day of the brutal bombing, I was enjoying a beautiful fall day until my mom told me the breathtaking news. She told me two planes had crashed deliberately into the Twin Towers in New York City. As I witnessed the awful pictures on the news, I stared speechless, feeling very scared and extremely angry toward the evilness of the incident. I was speechless, for I couldn't believe the entire innocent lives that were viciously taken as the Twin Towers fell quickly into the soil of New York. Surely, I felt helpless and cried some for the thousands of smart and wonderful people from all over the world who perished under the terrorists' evil acts. Sadly, I thought about the 3,000 families that lost their loved ones because of this tragedy. I couldn't even imagine how these unfortunate families must feel. After I thought deeply for a while, I was still unable to believe that the majestic Twin Towers were no longer there. It's a sense of loneliness knowing that one of America's greatest structures ever built just suddenly disappeared. I cringed thinking how someone could be so incredibly heartless that he would purposely take 3,000 lives. These are the unfortunate experiences I witnessed on the tragic day of September 11, 2001. Always, I will remember all the innocent lives taken by this evil act. Of course, my life has changed drastically because of 9/11. Although this tragedy is unfortunate, it has taught me many valuable lessons. After the deadly attack, I learned to never take anything for granted and to live my precious life to the fullest. You never do know what evil is waiting to strike in the future. Also, September 11 had made me prouder to be an American and respect out great country even more. In addition, I have grown more cautious and look out for my well being more often. This is how the tragedy of 9/11/01 has changed my life forever. In the future, the people of America should remember many important lessons about September 11, 2001. Most importantly, we should definitely remember and honor all the brave firefighters, police officers, and volunteers who died trying to save innocent lives. She was said that all the teachers had to go to a confrence. They left us all there to watch the movie Charlettes Web. As i looked around they class kids slowly departed from the class. I told Victoria, my assistant to call our travel agent and thank him for suggesting the train. The ride had been pleasant. Karyn was sitting at her desk on the 46th floor of the McGraw Hill building when she looked out and saw a plane hit into one of the twin towers. Said to Victoria, "I spoke to my Mom last night, and I know she is travleing today, I think to Baltimore. But tell me is she on a plane or a train - I didn't pay attention to her. Victoria said, she is on a train and I have her holding on her cell phone now. What's up Karyn? While Victoria and Karyn were speaking Karyn missed seeing the second plane hit the second tower. However, Karyn had seen enough and has had enough nightmares with the sight she had seen. While I was checking into my hotel in Baltimore, there was a big commotion in the lobby, and I found out that the Pentagon had just been hit. So I had the news of hits on both ends. It was unreal, the twin towers and the Pentagon in one day. One of my colleagues who left Penn Station at 7:30 was forced off Amtrack in Phildadelphia, and he had to stay over at a hotel in Philadelphia. Amtrack closed down. There were bomb threats at the convention center and when the expo hall was open we were all either saying prayers or gathered by televsions to see the news. When I finally was able to return to New York and I saw from the train the NY skyline from the Jersey side, it was an awesome sight to see what appaered to be a large pillow of smoke around this wound where the twin towers once stood tall. Seeing it with my own eyes was not anything at all like what I had seen on TV. When I got out at Penn Station, the air quality was very poor. I cried for New York. It was so sad. It was my mother, she said" The trade center and other important buildings are under attack." I am an Emergency Services Officer, so I was extermly concerned with all the events and also worried about my wife and twins at home. I called my wife and told her to turn on the TV. I my self am a second greneration Firefighter. I am the first EMT in my family. All I could hear on the radio was that one of the towers in New York was hit by a plane. My mind went blank. I changed the station in my car to every one imaginable and they all said the same thing. So when I got to work, I ran inside and immeadiately called my boyfriend who was sleeping at home. Unfortunately, I broke the disturbing news to him. He turned on the television and told me what he saw. Then to make things worse, he saw the second plane hit the other tower, while I was on the phone with him. The first thing out of his mouth was "Oh S***. Honey, this was not an accident." I then asked what he meant and he then proceeded to tell me what happened. I could not beleive it. My fear of being on a plane has just now increased dramatically. I opened the store as I usually would, but business was just not the same. I contacted the owners and they were extremely upset at it all. The store was to be shut down for the day so we could spend the day with our families. However, I think that the hardest part for the business owners was that they were of Middle Eastern decent and concerned for their lives. Especially after they heard who did it. After we closed the store down that day, we went home to our families and were glued to the TV, watching the horrifying acts that were happening just on the other side of the U.S. You could almost feel the pain from New York just through watching the raw emotion coming from people who lost their loved ones. But those loved ones are angles watching over them now. Doesn't it make you wonder what was going through the terrorists' minds during the time that they were taking thousands of lives? People don't care about human life anymore. Especially people who have committed hate crimes. They just asume that if you look a certain way or dress a certain way that you just have to be. Wake up people. If you don't know, don't assume. America is the land of the free. And that is the way it will always be. So American's need to get use to seeing people of different religions, races and creeds. Didn't we go through this in the 60's? Who cares what color your skin is? Or what religion you practice? People come here to be free of all criticism. On a certain night when America was asked to stand on a corner with a candle to represent our huge candle light vigil for New York, everbody on my block did this. We actually had people stop and get out of their cars and join us. That is Unity and America needs to learn that. Tell us your story: My girlfriend Robyn and I planned on being out of work on September 11, 2001, and going for a bike ride across the Minuteman Rail Trail from Bedford, MA. into downtown Boston. The plan was to have lunch there and bike back. We headed out of Worcester, MA. at about 7:30 am., car packed, bikes on the rack. It was gorgeous weather and we congratulated ourselves on our choice of days. We got to Concord Common a little before 8:30. I parked my car in a public lot just outside the Common area. We had our bikes off the rack and headed out, all before the attacks occurred. We had to bike over to the trail head, in the next town, and arrived without incident. Once we got on the trail, we thought it odd that all we could hear along the way were talk radio shows. And loud. No music. There were a lot of contractors and builders around Lexington at that time, and all truck radios were at full blast. We stopped at a bench along the way about 10:30 and could hear church bells ringing in Lexington Center. We were laughing, thinking they were practicing Christmas music. Hark,the Herald Angels Sing it sounded like. We even started singing. Talk about irony. We got into downtown Boston via Commonwealth Ave at just about noon. Lunch was at a sidewalk cafe we picked out, doubling back after making our choice. We entered the dark interior to find every customer in the restaurant clustered around the bar, the TV blaring. We couldn't see the screen from where we stood. We shrugged it off and picked out a table back out on the sidewalk, doing an about face in the doorway. Our waitress was not talkative, not a word about any of the tragedy that happened. And we were too far from the TV inside to hear what was going on. Traffic headed past on busy Commonwealth Ave, and nothing seemed out of whack. We did not pick up on any conversations coming from pedestrian traffic passing by. And then we headed back. We wanted to beat the 5 o'clock exodus down Route 2 heading west out of Boston. We passed the entrance to Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford at about 3:30. The cars were lined up on the narrow access street, and police were not letting a lot of angry people through the gates. Still, we had no clue nor did we stop to investigate or listen to what the police were saying. When we got back out to Main Street in Concord, Robyn decided to call her mom on the cell phone just to let her know where we were and when we would arrive home. When Robyn screamed into the phone, and relayed the information to me, we just looked at each other and claimed it couldn't be true. We peddled back to the parking lot, found that my car, the only one left, was chained in. The state had declared all national landmarks off limits and fair targets for any other destruction that might go on. I called the police and they told me one of the gates didn't have a lock on it, to just put the chain back when we left. All the way home in the car we couldn't talk, ears tuned to the radio. Once home, my husband was in front of the TV, by now it was after 5:30, and I saw my first view of the planes hitting the Towers. Robyn and I still can't believe we spent the whole day in ignorant bliss, ignoring tell tale signs along the way. My overwhelming sadness at what happened was postponed, but I shall never forget how ironic it was that Robyn and I didn't recognize the possibly of something of that magnitude happening in our country, along with the rest of America. Any carefree, naive, escaping-for-the-day thinking I ever have again will always be on the lookout for those tell tale signs of something gone seriously wrong. They were showing footage of the first plane crashing into the North tower. Then about half an hour later the second plane crashed, the explosion was like nothing I've ever seen. Then when I was going to my fourth period I heard some teachers talking about how another plane struck the pentagon. Then when the class started my math teacher told us that Twin towers had collapsed killing 3,000 people. He also told us that the plane crashes were acts of terrisom. When I got home my parents were watching the news. The next day my sister and I did not go to school then we heard on the news that the Taliban was behind the attacks on our country and that Goerge Bush considered it a Act of War. Tell us your story: My husband and I were scedualed to go on vacation the week after the attack on the USA.I called and rescedualed for two months latter,it wasnt because I was afraid to fly but because I felt there was alot more people that needed to fly than I did.I was sitting at my kitchen island painting when I heard about the first plane hitting the twin towers and the all of a suden on my own tv I saw the other plane hit the towers.I think my first emotion was one of sadness but then that quickly turned to anger that another person and country could hate the USA so much that they could take so many lives and not care.I have always loved this great nation I live in but I was never one to express alot of emotion about the United States,but that changed very quickly.I now have a flag hanging in the front of our home and I cant even count how many shirts I have say how much I love this country.The bombings changed how I feel about the holidays like July 4th,veterans day world wars etc.I just cant understand how a group of people reather monsters could willing take the lives of people that are just living there life and not hurting anyone.I was born in upstate N.Y and now live in Mn,but I will always be a New Yorker.The bombings have also taught me to never take any thing or any one I love for granted again.I think the worst part for me was that septmber 11 was my grandfathers birthday.He had just pasted away on Labor day and then to have the bombings happen on his birthday was just a lot to much for me.It was hard enough just loosing my grandfather but to have this tradgety happen on the day of his birth was just heart breaking.I have always belived in god and I was raised cathlic but never a very pratcing on,but that has all changed,I say my praiers every day,and I thank god he has given us all the strengh to go on no matter how hard it is some days more than others.I watched the annaversity showes on tv and all I could do was sit there and cry.I think what suprised me the most is that my husband isnt the kind on person to show his emotions but sept 11 2002 he sat there looking at the ceramoney at the sight of where the towers once stood and had tears in his eyes.I am proud to be a American and live in the United States Of America,because as the old saying goes (when the going gets tough the tough dont take no crap).I am also proud that all of America has pulled together to help one another,not just for the short term but for the long hall and I know with out a doubt that we the people of America will always stick together no matter what anyone or any country throws at us.We are one tough bunch of people.
