Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in bed sick from chemo when my sons came in and said "Mom, a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center!" I turned on the television in time to hear about the second crash. My son-in-law had just passed by there the night before and told what a lovely sight it was that night. I was caring for my grandchildren at that time because their parents were working. Their father, a truck driver, was in Pennsylvania and couldn't get home. The children came home from school and told me all about some "bad people who crashed into some big buildings and a lot of people died." My then five year old grandson, Billy, started clinging to me and seemed very sad. I thought it was because of the bad news. One afternoon I asked him if he was afraid. He sadly nodded his head yes. I told him that he didn't have to worry because he was safe with his family and that we all love him. I explained that what happened wasn't going to happen here and that the bad people who did this terrible thing would be punished. When we started talking about the rescuers that were helping to save the people who were trapped in the debris, he asked me about his daddy. I had told the children that their father was stuck in PA and poor Billy thought that his daddy was trapped in one of the buildings. I held him close and cried as I explained that his daddy was safe in his truck and he would be home as soon as the roads were opened again and he could travel. His school councelor is working with him today because the world is reliving this tragedy and he is still having a difficult time dealing with it. Our hearts, prayers, and love go out to those who lost loved ones last 9-ll and to those who are fighting for our country today. We owe them all a great debt of gratitude. I was getting ready to go out when I heard the broadcast over the local T.V. station. It wasn't real to me for a good reason. A few years before I moved to Colorado I went to a job interview at the World Trade Center. As I was riding up in the elevator to go to my interview, the elevator started swaying back and forth. I got very scared and decided not to go ahead to the job interview. Who knows what may have happened if I had went ahead and gotten that job that day. I might not be here to write this story. I think about all those people who were working there and lost their lives and the lives of their loved ones today. I guess I am one of the lucky ones. I will always be a New Yorker. A call came in by cell phone that I needed to get to a TV because we were under attack! I had no idea what the caller meant. I drove to Fire Station 4 and walked into the ready room and joined the others who were watching TV. There on the TV I could see the first tower on fire. At first the talk was that it was some sort of air disaster, I mean how could you hit a building like that...it had to be an accident. As we were discussing and guessing what was happening the second plane showed up and hit the other tower. For an instant everyone was stunned, no one spoke. My first comment was "Osama bin Laden". Somehow in my very being I knew he had to be behind this. It was truly insane and certainly the mind of a deranged person. I couldn't watch anymore and went back to my truck and had the radio on after that. When I heard the Pentagon had been hit my heart sunk even more. I could not believe there were more planes in the sky full of terrorists. For the next few hours every story on the radio had me wondering when would it end. Finally the last plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. It was over. But it will never be over as long as we allow tyrants and lunatics to threaten the fiber of our great nation. We will only be at peace when all our enemies are defeated. Not bargained or negotiated with but destroyed. This time peace will not come with the olive branch but by the sword. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Mornings were usually the best time for my baby boy and I to spend together. He was always the most pleasant, happy child. We rarely had the TV on, except while I was in the shower. I had just stepped out of the shower, pressed "stop" on the VCR and I saw a breaking news story on the TV. I don't often pay attention to the breaking news stories, becuase things like OJ Simpson have desensitized me to "big news stories". For whatrever reason, I did keep in on and shortly realized the World Trade Center was on fire. I held my baby close and continued to watch, witnessing the second plane crashing in to th second tower as it happened live in my bedroom. I called my father. He was aware of the situation and was very concerned about the people in the building. Oh my god, I thought to myself, the human loss is going to be horrific! I haden't even thought about that yet. Then the president came on TV, calling this an act iof terror, shaking my world (and literally my whole body) up. My family eventually met up at my sister's home in Millburn. Her husband was the only one in the city working in midtown. She could not reach him by phone but had received an e-mail from him saying that he is alright. We all sat, staring at the TV all day, except for making frantic phone calls to our friends and extended family who lived or worked in the city. We did not know anyone directly involved in the attacks. We all hugged eachother a lot that day, and continue to do so today. I walked into my first period English class and my best friend Jessica looked up at me and said "We're at war!" Ilooked at her and shook my head. I was looking forward to a trip to the dollar store to help children from our community based junior high program work on shopping skills. I was only at the school a few minutes when someone gave us the news that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At that time the first thoughts were that is so sad. Thinking it was a small plane and that it was an accident. Now the children start arriving at school. Some teachers have turned on T.V. sets and we see the second plane hit the other tower. It was such a feeling of despair. Something really bad is happening but we don't know enough about what is happening to share information with the school children yet. The principal sends a memo that says he too only knows what is being broadcast, and continue school as normal, and we will get updates throughout the day. I call my own daughters highschool and ask if they are taking any different steps, should I come get her, are they informing the students what is happening? They inform me some parents are picking up there students but there is no need to. The teachers at the school I am working at make a decision to go on our community trip as planned. We are on the way to the store when an announcement comes over the bus radio telling all buses within the Chicago city limits to get out of the city. Now it is coming even closer to home. We do go to the store, there is no one on the roads every shop owner is glued to the radio or T.V. We head back to school. At this time for the kids that are left at the school (many parents picked there kids up)it is decided to bring T.V.'s into the classroom and share information with the students. It was difficult there were many questions but I think it was important for them to be a part of what was going on. At my daughters school they decided not to let them watch T.V. I understand why they did this but since they were highschool students it was very confusing for them. They were hearing enough chatter in the hall that terrible things were happening but were not given enough information to comprehend what was occuring. We as many Americans spent the next days getting every bit of information we could, mourning the loss of our citizens and wanting action on those who could have done such a thing. Since the 9/11 event a year ago we went to Chicago to see the exhibit of photos taken at ground zero. It was moving and there was such a connection to others that were there. It was like a wake and everyone there was part of a family to remember the victims. Then we went to New York City and went to ground zero. Again it was a feeling of connection, a feeling of empathy for the victims families, trying to image how they feel and knowing that it could be any one of our own families that this could have happened to. As a country we must stay strong, stay connected, never forget, and never let this happen again. I had been asleep about an hour when I got a call from the fire department saying everyone was on standby. Then I got another call from my husband saying they tried to blow up the World Trade Center again (re: 1993 bombing). He said it was all on television. After that I knew I couldn't sleep until I knew what was going on, so I got up and turned on the TV. I saw video of the first plane and the first tower burning. Then I watched, in horror, just as most of America did, and saw the second plane hit the other building. I knew then, we were under attack! My son was living in New York City at the time and I knew he was close to that area. I was extremely worried. I couldn't cry, I couldn't really do anything until he was able to get through to me on the phone. He said he was watching the small TV in his van and the news broke in and showed the 1st plane hitting the tower. He was only 10 blocks from the Trade Center, he then turned and looked toward the trade center and actually witnessed the second plane go into the other tower. After I talked to him and thanked God that he was safe I could finally cry for those lost in the attacks on New York and the Pentagon. Being a member of a fire department took on a whole new meaning after the terrorist attack. I pray it never happened again, but I guarantee that it won't be as easy next time. Tell us your story: I remember driving to work in the morning with thoughts of the changing leaves with autumn approaching, the kids just returning to school and how Fall is my favorite season. When I arrived at the office, our office manager was on the phone with our boss who lives in Summit. He had heard about a plane crashing into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I turned my radio on to WPLJ which broadcasts from NYC and heard a second plane had crashed into the other tower. Our boss was going to bring one of his TV sets from home so we could watch the ongoing events in the office. We could not get reception on the TV inside the office so it was rigged up outside. About 12 of us gathered around the TV and the other 3 of us tried to get info on different radio stations. My most vivid recollection is thinking about how many people worked in the towers, do I know anyone? I called my husband at home and told him to turn on the television. We spoke a couple of times back and forth. The next sound I heard was a loud quick swoosh over head. It was the fighter jets ordered to go to NYC. That's when I realized I needed to be home near my husband and children, who knew what would be next. The most important contribution I want to make to my story is this - Faith will get you through. God is not to blame. Satan does exist and influences evil. If you are still suffering turn to God and pray for peace. Prayers can be answered, however, evil will always exist. Also, please let's not beat up on our President or government about why more was not done to prevent this horrible event. We need to stick together especially now. Someone was at one of the other cashier's window on his cellphone with his wife. She was telling him about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. He dismissed the call and said goodbye. Only a minute later she called him back to tell him about the second plane hitting the other tower. At this time, I had to go to class. We were discussing the rumors of terrorism and several people worried about family members in New York. When I returned to work after class, my supervisor was outside having a cigarette. She asked if I had heard about the towers falling. I hadn't. Then she asked if I had heard about the pentagon. I hadn't. She filled me in on all that had happened in the hour I was in class. I was in shock. The first thing I did was go and get on the internet to read the news reports. I also called home to my sister, to see if she had heard from the school about the children. After work, I went home. My sister was going out for the evening, and I didn't want to be alone. I was afraid that there was going to be more attacks. I didn't want to be home alone, so I went to my boyfriends. My daughter and I spent the evening there. In the week following, news trucks and cameras were out front of the university. It seemed there might have been a terrorist trained at my school. That hit home hard. Luckily it turned out that the person they thought had piloted one of the planes was not one our students. Still, people started bashing my work for training terrorists. People complained about our foreign students, and our process of accepting students. After all the bomb threats, suspicious items for the bomb squad to investigate, and rumors flying around campus, life had been changed, there was no going back to our simple, peaceful life. It was my day off from work and I was sitting on the couch finishing off a bowl of Cheerios, waiting for my 7-1/2 month old daughter to wake up. I was watching the last 15 minutes or so of Good Morning America just like I always did. Pretty soon Diane Sawyer came on and reported that something was going on at the World Trade Center. There was footage being shown of a burning building. I was sitting there wondering what had just happened when all of a sudden another plane came in from the right of the screen and plowed into the other building! I couldn't believe it. I heard Diane say "Oh my God" and I was thinking the same thing. I couldn't believe that I had just witnessed "live" terrorism. When the buildings came down, all I remember thinking was "Those people didn't get out! Those people couldn't have gotten out!" The horror of the whole thing settled in right then. I tried to call my husband and my parents and their phones wouldn't even ring because the phone lines were so backed up. I started freaking out because I didn't understand what was happening. I got ahold of my mother-in-law and started crying and she came over right away. It was a day that you couldn't be alone. So we watched TV and waited for loved ones to call. They were all finally able to get through. It was a terrible, nerve-wracking day and I was so glad that my baby was and still is too young to understand because I had no idea how I would explain it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was 9mos. Pregnant with my daughter who will be one on Oct.5th. My son woke up and wanted a drink. I went into the kitchen. My husband called me and said that a terrible movie was on all the channels, we then together realized that it was not a movie but live news. Just as we were about to sit down and change the channel the 2nd plane hit tower 2. We were at this point trying to call our family in New York. I have a cousin who works for transit there. He had just left Church Street only 5 minutes before the first plane hit Tower one. I Immediatley began to cry. The not knowing. For hours my husband tried to comfort me until we got through at around 5pm. Talking to him I was relieved and wanted terribly to see him but like most americans I was afraid. Only In March I took a flight from Charlotte to San Diego to see My Father. I showed the terrorist that I am not afraid and will continue to fly. That flight to San Diego was important. It was the first time my kids got to see their Grandfather. I pray that it will not be the last. My children who are now 2 yrs (my son) and 1 yr (my Daughter) will always remember what happend in New York on that day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember my dad was taking me to school and we were listening to the local radio station. I remember they came on with a special announcement, cutting into one of the songs. I remember thinking- why would they cut off this song. I love this song! I couldn't believe how selfish I sounded after what I heard about what was going on in New York City at that same moment. On the radio they said that a helicopter had crashed into one tower of the World Trade Center. That brought me back to the time that I went to Manhattan with my family on a vacation. I remember the line for the Statue of Liberty being so long that we ended up going to the top of the World Trade Center. I remember going through the huge doors of that building and just being in awe of how big it was. I think my first reaction when I heard the announcement of the first crash was just total shock. It didn't make sense to me how something so big and powerful be ruined by something like that. When I got to school I remember everyone talking about it. I never thought it was that big of a deal and neither did anyone else. Then I went into my first period Chemistry class and saw the TV. I was so... it's almost an inexplainable feeling of what I felt. I saw the people running through the smoky streets and firefighters coming together from everyone and running into buildings. It just didn't make sense to me. It almost didn't seem real, like it was maybe a movie. I remember thinking about all of the families and how so many people all over the world would be effected by what I just saw happen on TV in those few minutes. I will never forget that day, I don't think any of us ever will. It's just strange to think that I witnessed something so big and something that will be remembered forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I WAS AWAKENED BY A PHONE CALL FROM MY GRANDMOTHER IN TEARS, SHE SAID TURN ON THE TELEVISION. SHE IS DRAMATIC AT TIMES SO I THOUGHT WE MUST BE GETTING A SEVERE WEATHER REPORT OR SOMETHING SILLY... AS I TURNED ON THE TELEVISION ONE TOWER WAS ON FIRE AND THE OTHER WAS SECONDS AWAY FROM BEING STRUCK BY THE SECOND AIRPLANE. I WAS SPEECHLESS. I KEPT TELLING MYSELF THAT THE BUILDINGS MUST BE EMPTY, THEY HAD TO BE THAT MANY PEOPLE COULD NOT BE IN DANGER.. I WAS WRONG. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THEY BEGAN TO COLLASPE, THE FEELING OF TERROR AND HELPLESSNESS WAS OVERWHELMING, YOUR LIFE FLASES BEFORE YOUR EYES. THERE WAS SUCH HORROR. NOW THAT A YEAR HAS PASSED I NOW LIVE IN WEYMOUTH, MASS AND FEEL CLOSER TO THE PEOPLE HERE, BUT STILL A ENOURMOUS LOSS OF LIFE. I BELIEVE WITH ALL MY HEART THAT EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS TRAGIC THERE IS A BIGGER MESSEAGE AND MEANING TO THE LOSS OF SO MANY LIVES, I BELIEVE GOD HAS A MESSEAGE FOR US ALL. IT TOOK SUCH A TRAGIC EVENT FOR US TO UNITE AND COME TOGETHER IN PRAYER AND UNITY, AS OTHER EVENTS HAPPENED OVER THE YEARS WE TURNED TO EACH OTHER FOR SUPPORT AND THE CHURCH THEN AFTER A WHILE WE REJOINED OUR OLD LIVES.. I THINK WE NEED NOT ANOTHER TRAGDEY TO STAY TOGETHER AS A COUNTRY AND IN THE EYES OF THE LORD. WE SHOULD STAND STRONG AND IN GOOD FAITH BECAUSE OF THE GOOD THINGS IN LIFE WE HAVE AND WILL HAVE IN THE FUTURE. THAT'S HOW WE WILL CONTINUE TO SURVIVE THE WORLD WE LIVE IN. Tell us your story: In the early morning of 9/11/01 I was working as a publicist at a conference in New Jersey sponsored by a large real estate firm. They were presenting western brokerage practices to a small group of political officials from the People's Republic of China. Chinas government needed to investigate policies for buying and selling of property because home ownership and residential real estate sales were still revolutionary concepts in a country where the state previously owned everything. Just before 9:00 AM I got a call from the home office saying that I shouldn't expect any press at the event because a plane had hit one of the towers. The conference was in full swing and there no reason to make an announcement because I thought it was just a terrible accident. However moments later, after the second plane hit I got another message from my office that the country was under terrorist attack. I then interrupted the conference and informed the CEOs who quickly left the building leaving me with the Chinese officials and one translator. Our cell phones were not working but the Chinese could call Beijing and update us with news they were receiving in China. The Minister of Land Reform then insisted on seeing the news on a TV. So after a few minutes of scrambling around a quickly evacuating building, I found the company gym. It was there, on the monitors above the stationary bikes where ten Chinese business men in black suits and me, a native New York artist-cum-publicist all watched as the buildings fell down. After assuring them of their safety and passing my charges over to a hotel manager in Jersey I headed back to Brooklyn via Westchester and down over the Whitestone Bridge to the fine white ash that covered Carroll Gardens and that tinted the hues of the rest of our lives. Tell us your story: I don't think anyone will ever forget where they were or what they were doing on that morning.....I, for one, certainly will not. For me it was very much a life-changing experience. I was awakened around 8am by a phone call from a friend saying that all hell had broken loose in New York--and to turn on the tv. After that, it was almost a surreal experience; like witnessing an execution. It was like that. For the rest of the day I wept. For the lives lost; for the families torn apart; for the jobs lost; and most of all for the innocence we all lost that awful day. And I remember the fear.....where would it end? Who was behind it? What's next? We all lost something that day. To some of us the loss is not nearly as profound as to others; but we all lost something. All of America now grieves and heals together. May God grant us His grace and peace so the healing will continue....and may we teach our children to avoid the hatred that brought forth bitter fruit that day. Tell us your story: I was gettng the two oldest ready for school and then our station had an emergency announcement; It was when the first plane crashed through the tower I was horrified for those people and their families! When the second tower got struck I was so shocked and scared all I could do was sit down and cry, as the events kept unfolding eveeryone seemed to be calling everyone to say I Love you and make sure that they were alright. I stayed glued to the t.v. i just couldn't believe this was happening in our homeland; and how we all were doing little things for everyone at groundzero that were trying to save as many lives as possible and comforting others ; My husband worked at print shop and everyone begin making flags in all sizes (stickers ,bumper stickers posters and the T- shirt designs were unbelievable some made me proud others took me by surprise we donated them to diff. organizations and I'm sure they made their way to all the men and women that forgot about their own lives for a few to help in a great time of need; I still cry whenever I think about we made homemade ribbons for our children to where to school this day/our flags fly proud on our home on a van where ever I go I want people to know that I am proud to be an American and proud of the people who aren't afraid to stand up for her!!!! I hope that this will bring our pledge and so on back to our schools so that my children can be as proud of OUR COUNTRTY as I am they are the future!!! My family and I will never ever forget September 11, 2001 because all we have to do is look at our son, Riley. Today is his birthday. He was born at 6:09PM on September 11, 2001. Although I truly went into labor at 3:30AM that morning, we joke that he just didn't want to come out to a world where evil had taken over that day. I know, because I spent four hours trying to push him out but he was insistent on crawling back further up the birth canal. Riley will always be a sign of hope and blessing to us and hopefully, in the future, to the rest of the world that someone wonderful was born on such a gloomy, evil day. Riley is everything that the terrorists are not: he loves life, he is respectful of life, he's got such an innocence still, and his beautiful eyes show you how deep his soul is.
