Where was I when the world stoped turning that September day? It was a normal beautiful fall morning, I was home, having already sent my oldest child to school, & preparing one of my other children for preschool. My Mother in Law called & asked if I knew what was happening. No I replied. She told me to turn on the Television to the news, I was shocked when I saw what was happening. One of the WTC towers was crumbling to the ground and the other one had a huge hole in it. As I continued to watch the news I learnt the Pentagon was also hit, & they believed their was a plane headed for the White House. Those people on that PA flight were so increadible they served their country as if they were soldiers.( and even though they didnt have issued uniforms or military papers they were true soldiers as well as hero's) I made calls to Loved ones & friends. I picked up a notebook and started to write things down that were being told on the news. My oldest child came home she had already heard some of the news from school. I remember her saying she wished this had never happend. While I might not have been directly affected or lost anyone in the attacks. I still grieve for the lost and thier family's & our Nation, And I appreciate even more the freedom we have. We will never forget 9/11/01, & we will continue to grow strong & stay united. Tell us your story: I was at home getting ready to attend a meeting in Jersey City, New Jersey, when my son Daniel came running upstairs to tell me that a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. My first reaction was pilot error, then I thought no on is that off on take off or landing. When the second plane hit the other tower then a sick feeling came over me.I rushed to the school where my children were and took them from school.We all needed to be together. My older daughter Melissa was at college. We called and asked if she wanted to come home and she said that everything was ok and that she was going to stay and see what happens. We had a few friends that worked in the buildings, they all made it home safe to be with there family's. They are all very lucky. My heart goes out to all the people that lost there life and there family. This is something that i've not been able to get over. Our life can be over just that fast. On the morning of September 11, 2001 I was on my way to bring my boys to school. I turned on the radio in the car and heard nothing but tragidy. I remember at that moment being in pure shock. I could never believe something like this could happen to so many lives. I could have never emagined it happening to us as Amaricans. that day my five along with millions of others changed. I now more then ever realize really how valuable life is. So many people lost their lives that day. And so many others were scared for life. today on the one year anniversary of that tragic day, nothing has gotten any easier. Although there are no pictures of the tragidy actually happening and people have made the best of thair lives. When i hear the stories of all the widdowed and the children left without mothers or fathers. My heart aches just as it did that morning. We were at a repelling obstacle course when we heard rumors about "bombs" or "explosions" in NYC. We didn't know what to think. When we got back to the Company, our Commander, told us what happened. It was unbelieveable. My fellow soldiers and I were thinking that they were making it up. We all thought that by them tell us this, that we'd be prepared to handle war, thus making us motivated to complete BCT. However, when they brought us into the conference room and showed us the video, we knew that there was something terribly wrong. But we all remained strong. We knew that we ARE soldiers and that our dedication to this country will overcome anything. I knew it right then, that I had a call. I knew what I had to do. In July of 2002, my unit deployed to Afghanistan and we did great things. We brought these terrorists to justice. On September 11th 2002, I remembered everything that happened a year ago, when America had to call 911. I called my mother and told her I was okay. In September of 2003, my unit deployed to Iraq and we did great things. We brought these terrorists to justice. Tell us your story: Having flown into Detroit on September 10, 2001, a colleague and I were at the Marriott Hotel in Southfield for a 3-day conference. The conference began at 8:00 a.m. and before 9 a.m. one of the attendees had gone through the lobby where the television was showing pictures of the World Trade Center. She came back to tell the rest of us (approximately 10 people were at the conference) and we all went back out to the lobby, where we sat glued to the television for quite some time. The conference leader was reluctant to call us away, but for the most part we stuck to our schedule until the conference was over on September 13, 2001. My colleague and I were scheduled to fly out of Detroit Metro Airport at 7 p.m. on that Thursday, the 13th. As luck -- or something -- would have it, Detroit Metro, which had been shut down since the time of the first attack, was scheduled to re-open for flights at 7 p.m. We thought we were incredibly lucky. We got to the airport far ahead of our departure time; people were going through security quite slowly, but in an orderly fashion. One of the other conference attendees had a small pair of tweezers in her purse, and they were confiscated. We proceeded to our gate area after grabbing a bite to eat, and had a rather lengthy wait in an eerily empty area. There were perhaps 15 other people that we could see from our seats. One of the people was a security officer with a bomb-sniffing dog. At the appointed time, we boarded our plane and sat down. There were two other people on the plane, for a grand total of four. It was very strange. We sat and waited, but nothing happened. Finally, we were told to exit and airplane and go to the counter area, where we would be issued tickets for the following day's flight (which would have been Friday). We were also told to go to the luggage carousel area, where we found literally hundreds of people hoping to retrieve their bags. It was done in a very unworkable fashion -- you were to work your way to the front of the "line", such as it was, and give your ticket to airport personnel who would then find your luggage. When we saw what was happening, we made the decision to leave our luggage behind, rent a car, and drive back to Indianapolis. After an uneventful trip home, I took Friday off to just sit and think about the weeks' events. Having been away from family and friends when 9/11 happened, it wasn't as real to me as it was once I got home again. I did not realize how much time I had been silently praying, "Just get me home again." It doesn't seem possible that a year has now gone by. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Tunnel Vision The arrival of my Ez Pass statement is usually greeted with hardly a glance. But the October statement was different. I opened it up, scrolled down with my finger and found the date, 9/11. The statement read 8:58.16 as the time when I paid the toll to enter the Battery Tunnel. There would be no such record of when I received my car, but it was four in the afternoon when a Port Authority employee drove it back out and my day at the mouth of the tunnel was over. It would be months before I was in the tunnel again. It was a sparkling September day and by 8:35am I was already giving my Bichon Frise, Olivia, her second walk of the day. I had stopped to chat with a neighbor and when I realized the time, I knew I had to hurry. I had a 9:30 appointment at the Tribeca office, commonly referred to by its address, "99 Hudson." I had the news on in the car. By the time I was a few blocks from the Prospect Expressway the reporter came on with a bulletin, "some explosion or plane crash" had occurred in one of the Twin towers. A "hole" in the upper part of the building was being reported. I didn?t give it much thought; accidents happen. What a mess it would be getting into the office. Approaching the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway), the road becomes elevated to meet the approach to the tunnel. Traffic had slowed down and I was still at the bottom of the "hill" and all I could see was heavy smoke in the sky. When I came to the top of the hill the picture was clear. The top of one of the towers had a gaping hole the size of an opening to an old fashioned airplane hanger and a river size stream of smoke was spewing into the cloudless skyline of Manhattan. My thoughts were still foolishly on how I would navigate this traffic disaster. (I?ll take the FDR, come around the tip of Manhattan and approach the office from there; hopefully avoiding what I knew would be a rush of emergency vehicles.) Everyone around me still seemed to be intent on the same goal, getting into Manhattan. The information from the radio was fast paced even though traffic was barely moving. I was able to get into an EzPass lane and inch my way toward the tunnel. At 8:58:16 I was through the tollbooth. The cars moved ever so slowly but we were proceeding. About halfway through the tunnel we came to a complete stop. The radio report kept repeating that a plane had crashed into "tower one". I felt annoyed, what is this crap about "tower" one. It was one of the towers that were hit, All right! I was distracted from my annoyance by people walking in the Tunnel towards Manhattan. My cell phone rang and I was greeted with a worried question from my wife. "Where are you?" I told her I was sitting in my car in the Battery tunnel waiting to exit at the Manhattan side. She said that one of the twin towers was ablaze and that they could see the smoke from their school located on the Kingsboro CC campus. I told her that my radio was working in the tunnel and was keeping me posted on the latest events. She pleadingly told me to get out of there. I said once I got on the Manhattan side I would turn around and go home. I told her I was fine and not to worry and I would call her as soon as I was out of the tunnel. Within minutes the radio announcer reported that a second plane had hit the other tower and all illusions of an accident disappeared. I was a little bit hungry, so I started on the substantial slice of banana cake my wife had baked. I had also brought a good supply of homegrown figs to share with my colleagues. The fig count was dwindling. The guy in the van next to me opened his window and yelled over to me that the Pentagon had been bombed also. I acknowledged him and told him I also heard it on the radio. What the hell was going on? We would hear and see soon enough. All of a sudden yelling noises could be heard, soon followed by a crowd of people running back toward the Brooklyn side. Some were screaming; "Get out of your car! Get out of your car." As the crowd got larger and larger so did the smoke that seemed to be attached to them. I closed my windows as the panic and smoke passed my car. I was determined to stay calm. As the tunnel became darker and darker I thought, don?t tell me I?m going to die in this f------ place. I got my briefcase, put my remaining figs into it and decided to leave the car. I placed my car keys in my coat pocket and began walking toward Brooklyn between abandoned cars. Within a minute of walking there were no more cars, just an empty tunnel, as people continued to run past me. I saw a man in a wheelchair and asked him if he needed assistance. He barely acknowledged me as he whizzed past me moving faster than I ever could have. People were climbing onto the path and pushing and shoving into the openings in the tunnel usually reserved for tunnel personnel. I continued on my own pace even though the smoke was getting heavier and heavier. A person marched past me and inquired if I was ok. I told him I was fine and he continued to walk with me. I said I was in no shape to run out of the tunnel and that he could proceed at his pace if he wished. He said he was glad to have the company. So we coughed and talked and walked and walked. We could see but it was very smoky; the Brooklyn side was nowhere in sight. We shared what we had heard and continued to walk and to our delight the tunnel seemed to becoming clearer. The sight of fireman jogging in our direction was even more reassuring, even with their oxygen gear on. We said we were ok and wished them luck as they headed further into the tunnel. As we came around one of the bends in the tunnel we could see the light of Brooklyn. We shook hands and said good luck to each other as we entered the tunnel plaza. It seemed like it was snowing out, but the sky was gray. The whole area was filled with people, ambulances, police and fire personnel asking if we needed oxygen or water. We were directed to see one of the police officers who were collecting car keys and information. Some of the people standing around were covered with a layer of dust reminiscent of someone undergoing a tribal ritual. As we got further into the plaza the "snow" was diminishing. I tried to phone my wife, but the phone was not operable. I stood around and watched a scene that looked like the movie set of a disaster area. In the clamor about me I heard that a plane had unintentionally collided with the great structure. I still had no real sense of what was unfolding when my instructor turned off the monitor and began the lesson as he normally would. As I stepped into my fourth period study hall I was still unaware of the gravity of what was occurring. As I entered I saw my teacher and several classmates gazing awestruck at the monitor. In joining them I saw a second plane strike what I recognized as one of the World Trade Center Towers. I listened in terror as the full situation was laid before me by the newscaster. Three separate planes had launched an assault on the trade towers and one upon the pentagon. Mere minutes later I watched in shock as the towers disintegrated without warning. The dust seemed to engulf the whole of New York City and camera shots were a cloud of gray. As the dust settled and the immediate danger had passed a search was already begun for those who had committed the most abominable of acts. I was shocked that this search and anger had begun prior even to grieving for those who perished. Televisions in all remaining classes were tuned to news stations while my classmates and I sat anticipating the next event in the horrific sequence. Little occurred other than the government saying the blame rested on the shoulders of Bin Laden and the governing body of Afghanistan. I returned home to an awestruck family. My father seemed anxious as he consoled my distrait mother. All media outlets enduringly reported the latest developments for several days. Yet eventually this ceased, as did the overbearing nationalism that had been caused by the atrocities. At present all seems to have returned to its typical state. This although comfortable leaves us exposed to more attacks such as those that occurred. It is clear that much must be altered in order to prevent such occurrences in the future. I had just finished a final dress rehearsal of Jesus Christ Superstar which was due to open the following night. I got a call from my brother at the stage door of the theatre saying that someone had crashed into the WTC. I was like are you sure about that? And at that moment we were all turning on our mobile phones (as we cannot have them switched on during a performance) and all these sms's were coming on everyone's phone I couldn't believe it. I jumped into my car and made the 15 minute drive home listening to the radio. It must have been not long after the incident because all the radio stations were just receiving the news and no one knew what the hell was going on. A few minutes later the man on the radio said that another plane had just hit the other tower. I couldn't believe it. I walked through my front door and I from the look on my brothers face and my girlfriends I knew that world war three had just begun. Staying up all hours of the morning I am sure it was 5 am I decided to get ready for work. I didn't really feel like going to work. I don't think anyone really did that day. At work there was an eery silence around the shopping centre. No one was walking around or coming into the store and I didn't blame them. I walked down to the newsagent and asked about a paper. They had papers printed lying on the counter. Obviously the deadline for these pages was long before the attack. She told me that there would be another paper issued around about 11am so I decided to head back to work. A day that will live in infamy. I will never forget it and I don't think anyone could ever forget the images from that day. The general feeling with everyone I talked to was just utter disbelief. God bless all the people involved with the helping on that day I don't think anything can be done to show how much everyone appreciates what you guys did that day and are still doing today. We were listening to the radio and heard the shocking news. It made us both feel sick. All of our business meetings that day were focused on the days news. We listened to radios and watched television at all of our stops. I live in Newark, Ohio and could not wait to get back home to be with my family. I wanted to be with them because I was unsure if anything else was going to happen. When we finally got home that evening my husband and I watched the news all evening and cried. My daugher and her son and her life partner were calling and talking to us about it also. My daughter is 21 and she was like a child calling to her mom to see if things were going to be allright and I felt helpless as I could not reassure her that it would be. After the year has past and we now talk about it it is still in disbelief that something like that could happen to the United States. We have all come together as a family" to stand together and do what we have to to make this Country a safe one again. This is something that should be taught to all children in schools now. The small family cafe where I was working that day has firefighter and medic memorbiela all over the place. Dailey... customers and employees are reminded of the importance of these people. We were all going about our day just like any other day until we noticed the commotion on the tv. Regular customers, family and friends all gathered around that tv in awe. We cried and shared our fears and concerns. The bakery man from across the street came over to watch in horror as the people from his country scattered and screamed "Kill the americans". I felt sorrow for this man I did not even know. He is dark skinned and from somewhere other than America and denied his people for what was happening. One regular customer came in and I remember her saying that one look at my face and she knew something terrible had happened. We will always remember each other because of closeness of our tears that day. I know I will never forget that dreadfull day. I wanted to be near my children and my parents right then. I did not want my children to ever experience that kind of fear. I was not at that cafe today, in fact I have moved 1600 miles away from there but I'll not forget those people ever and the sorrow we shared. I am not rich, but I had flowers and candles. I am not an American Citizen, (A Brit. and proud of it.) but my house flew more Stars and Stripes than usual and still does. Tell us your story: Written on 9-11-02 My husband and I own an airplane service business (called an FBO for Fixed Based Operator) at the Burley airport in Idaho, which is a non-commercial general aviation airport. My husband had just gone on vacation to go hunting with friends, and that morning at about 6:50am I was discussing the day's work with our two mechanics in our office. There is a TV in the office that was turned on to FOX news, but the volume was low while we were talking. Suddenly one of the mechanics pointed to the TV; there was a tall building with smoke pouring out of it. I turned up the volume, and we stood there stunned and wondering how in the world an airplane could go into the building in such good weather and outside of all commercial flight routes. We were all watching it live a few minutes later when the second airplane hit, and then it was obvious without speaking that this was an intentional terrorist attack. About 20 minutes later, at 7:30am, I tried to call my husband at the cabin he was at, but they had already left to go hunting for the day, so I got the answering machine. Without any forethought, this is the message I left: "Hi guys. When you get back this evening, turn on the TV to a news channel - heck, probably any channel. The World Trade Center is no more, Osama Bin Laden just won." When I hung up, one of the mechanics looked at me kind of strange and said "Isn't that a bit of an exageration?" At the time I made that statement, both buildings were still standing. I told her I hoped I was wrong; but by the time my message was picked up that evening it had become true. To this day, I don't know why I said it that way on the answering machine. The hunters came home after that day; they lost interest in hunting. Shortly after 8:00am that morning I got a call from the FAA; the national airspace was closed; we could allow airplanes in the immediate area to land, but no one would be allowed to take off. They requested I call out on our Unicom frequency for any pilots flying to immediately land at the nearest airport. Fortunately, only one pilot got stuck at our airport. There is one other business at our airport, and I had to notify them of the air restriction, and ended up trying to tell them all of the events because they didn't have a TV or radio on. All the other person could say is "are you kidding??" after everything I said. I finally told him to go find a radio and verify it. That day I was glued to the TV as I watched one horror unfold after another. I will never forget the images I saw that day. Mere words cannot express the sadness for all the innocent people and familes that were killed or affected that fateful day. My brother, Gary Dalleske, a pilot, was at the Reno air races, all set to fly in his first formula 1 air race. The airspace was shut down before he even had a chance to qualify. The Reno air races were cancelled for the first time in it's 36 year history. My brother said he didn't care about racing anyway after what happened. He is racing this year in two airplanes, Blackjack 21 and 38 Special. While commercial aviation was able to resume after a few days, general aviation (small privately owned airplanes) were grounded for quite awhile. On September 18th we had to lay off our two mechanics because no one was coming in; our airport was effectively closed. No traffic=no money coming in=no payroll. Fortunately, our business had been totally paid off for two years, otherwise we would not have survived the business downturn. As it was, it was 12 months before my husband drew another paycheck out of the business. It's still just the two of us running it, 7 days a week. At least we're open; many similar FBO's like ours were forced to close down because of financial loss. I often wonder why general aviation small airplanes were so severely restricted, in some areas of the country for months, while commercial carriers were allowed to resume almost immediately. About 48,000 small airplanes and their pilots were stranded all over the country much longer. The government is bailing out the big commercial carriers that are going under; but not a penny to all the FBO businesses that were so badly affected, and those that closed. Our two mechanics eventually did find jobs at the China Lake Naval Facility in California, and are making better pay there then did here, but they miss Burley and they told us they want to come back here to retire (they are a husband and wife team). The FBI contacted me and I had to make up a list of all the information we had on file for all the students who had taken lessons through our flight school for the past 5 years. It took me a whole weekend to sift through the files and do it, but I was happy to comply. However, all of our students were local and none was a foreign national, so I don't think they learned anything from the pages of information I provided. Our shop and airplane insurance company contacted us and informed us that from now on, no acts of terrorism would be covered by our insurance. When we went to renew our insurance last spring, the rates had jumped way up. We had to pay the higher shop insurance, but they wanted $6300.00 a year to insure our single rental airplane for a value of $38,000. This was just too ridiculous, so we closed our flight and rental school last April, and our airplane is for sale. I've heard that about 3,000 small flight schools have closed across the U.S. for the same reason. Actually, we consider ourselves quite fortunate to have gotten by as good as we have in the past year. We're alive, and we still have our business. So many people lost so much that awful day, and afterwards. From now on, I think we all realize that we can't take anything for granted anymore; it's a dangerous world but we should all count our blessings and enjoy our lives while we can. We'll never forget the heros and stories of courage that day. It's all just a part of what makes this a great nation. I was supposed to fly out on that Tuesday, the 11th. I was also supposed to go visit New York that morning because the day before which was Monday the 10th was kind of a rainy day and we did other things. We thought that we would visit the towers and the Statue of Liberty before I flew out of Newark airport. Well, a good movie came on TV and chose to lie in bed and we thought we would go see the towers and Miss Liberty next time I flew in to New Jersey. Well, knowing me, if I went to the towers, I would have wanted to go to the top. I am so thankful and I thank God, that we did not visit New York that morning. When we checked out of hotel that morning we saw the news and it looked like it was a movie and we could not believe our eyes!! And my heart was just skipping beats. I instantly started to panic because everyone at home knew that where I was supposed to be that morning. My cell phone did not get any signal inside the hotel. When I did get signal there were over 12 phone calls. The last one was my mother. She had called twice and the last message that she had left she was very upset and yelling at me to call. I was very thankful that I did not visit New York that morning. I did stay at a friend's home and I helped the American Red Cross when I could. Tell us your story: Like so many other Americans, I was nowhere near New York, Washington D.C., or that field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. I was at home sleeping after having worked the night shift at the hospital that I am employed at. I remember waking up and looking at the television that I'd left on and thinking that instead of the Today Show that should have been on, somehow the channel must have been changed to a movie channel showing some action film. The images flashed before my eyes over and over of those two planes crashing into the World Trade Center, of the people terrified beyond explanation running away from the collapsing buildings, the news of the planes crashing into the Pentagon and into a field in Pennsylvania filled my ears. Slowly I came to realise this wasn't a movie, it wasn't even a nightmare. I sat there on my couch and watched the towers collapse and felt like my heart was being crushed. I knew I was watching thousands die right before my eyes. I was afraid for myself, for my family, for our country. All I wanted to do at that moment was surround myself with people that I loved, to hold them tight and never let go. It's been over a year now and remembering that day still brings back a little bit of the cold and fear, but more than anything else my heart is now filled with pride and love. I considered myself patriotic before 9/11 but now words can't describe how I feel about America. We are a strong and proud people that can find faith and hope in the face of the greatest adversity. We are a people that can pull together and help our neighbors who are hurting. We are a people with a spirit that can not ever be broken, no matter what. God bless America. Tell us your story: I learned about the attack as it happened as a news flash on a salesman's blackberry pager; not quite believing a voice from across the hall that said the world trade center had been hit by a plane. We all left the meeting and turned on a television to watch. As events unfolded, I sat down to write the following letter. I sent it to a local paper but it was never published. I recently sent it to a New York Fireman who was one of the last to be pulled from the rubble. He found it profoundly comforting even a year later. I appreciate this opportunity to share my thoughts of that day. I had originally meant it to be anonymous at the time, the tone of this is clear, but now I feel that somehow that is a form of hiding behind a mass of other voices. It does not matter so much now either way. This is a forum for us to know each other in a way that ties us all together as caring human beings. Long after I am gone, it is comforting to know that someone might find my thoughts, along with so many others, as a testament to the never ending hope for peace. I am prouder now than ever to be an American but I am equally proud to be part of the world community that decries terrorism in any form. My name is Brad Sacha and this is what I thought that day: "As I listen and watch the news this day, I am profoundly reminded of my place on this earth. I am one of you. And like those of you who wonder why, I breathe and sigh and feel the world change around me as I write. I watch the images as they unfold in an instant media photo shock to the system. My stomach wrenches in unison with you as we all watch the reality of human misery mix with the incredible sights of individual selflessness and the heroism of those living the nightmare of searching for life while dust and fire still swirl around them. I want to be there to dig. I want to help pull rubble off the bodies. I yearn to stand next to you as we carry an unknown face from the heap and place the body on a stretcher so that someone who knows the innocent soul can lay claim and greave with proper respect. We share this desire as surely as we look to our children and savor their existence. I am far away. I cannot be there. The moment is now and I watch and listen and etch these sights in my memory so that I will remember this day until I die. This is how you feel, I know. We greave and whisper to ourselves that God must know our fear and fate even as we question the motives of a few soulless thralls that are just now burning in the cinders along with the bodies of now ascending angels. I am just one of you. My emotions now gather in a gale that is joining with yours and gathers strength in a growing storm of resolve. Even as the dust settles on the backs of the rescue workers, we are all seeking a way to fight this terror. It is time to seek each other out and gather ourselves together. Those who still remember the horrors and insanity of World War II will recall this day how they did the same. We must show them that we have the same vision of unity and will not allow ourselves to wallow in fear nor accept defeat. When an enemy has no face when he attacks, his cowardice will be all that is ultimately remembered. Even if he crawls out from a secret place of hiding to taunt aloud, he has already failed. The world will be in turmoil in the days to come. Yet, I have already seen here in America and on the news around the globe that you, who recognize a universal evil, know that a chance is building. A chance to turn this conflagration not into the dark, misguided revenge of a terrorist but rather into a historic flashpoint remembered by a people that pounded its ashes into a memorial for peace. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember that I was preparing to leave the house and the TV was on. It was the most picture perfect sunny day that I can ever remember. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the sky was endlessly blue. I remember thinking it was just too beautiful to go anywhere. As I watched the plane strike the World Trade Tower I was frozen in disbelief. Then when the second plane hit it was a feeling of such utter shock and horror that I still can't find the words to descibe that moment. I was frozen in time. Then I thought about my youngest child,Sarah, who was living in New York and should have been on the subway to school. Her answering machine picked up in the apartment. I left a positive message saying I was glad she was at school. I couldn't reach her by cell phone. I had to hear her voice. Still she couldn't be reached. My mind raced. All those people in the building. I called family members and friends. I just wanted to connect. What if this was the end? I knew it was the end. The end to a time and a way of being we had all known and taken for granted. Finally late in the day I heard Sarah's voice. It was so reassuring. I was so grateful and yet saddened with the knowledge of others who would not be so fortunate. I don't remember when I finally felt comfortable enough to turn off the TV. It was weeks. I felt compelled to stay informed. I was carrying heavy baggage. There was no relief. What had happened to the human race? So much violence and turmoil and pain. Would I ever feel light hearted again? Yes but not to the same extent. There is always that fear lurking just below the surface that something sinister is about to happen. I still get anxious if I miss the national news broadcast. I am cautious but more importantly I am also consciously grateful. I am grateful for every day, good, bad or in between. I feel especially lucky to be a woman living in a society that provides so much freedom of thought and expression. I am grateful for the love of family and friends. I see the blue sky. I say a very heartfelt thank you and think of those who are not here. May their loved ones be comforted and enoy the blue sky as well. God bless America and the planet we all share. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was early Tuesday morning and I happened to have off from work because I worked the weekend. I was going in to take a shower when my wife called me from the living room to tell me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I knew a plane had hit the Empire State Building in the forties and nothing too bad had happened so I figured that some tourist plane had accidently hit the building. I walked into my living room and looked at the tv and I noticed right away that both buildings were burning. I knew that this could not have happened from one plane so right away I knew that this was not an accident. I started watching the news then I called my father so he could watch it too. He was as shocked as I was. As I was watching it we started hearing about other planes crashing and missing. We lived right in the flight path of LaGuardia Airport so my wife and I started getting very nervous. I then called downstairs to talk to my friend and as we were talking on the phone I was watching the news and they were doing some interview and all of a sudden there was a loud explosion and we couldn't see the World Trade Center any more. I thought it was because of the dust but my neighbor kept saying "What happened to the tower? Where is it?" I couldn't believe that it fell so I kept staring hard at the set hoping somehow through the dust I would be able to see it. I mean it couldn't collapse it just couldn't. I hung up from my friend and kept watching the news. Shortly afterward the second tower stared to collapse and all I could do was yell "NO, NO, NO". I work in a hospital in New York City and know a lot of firemen, police and EMTs. All I could think of were all the innocent people I knew who were most certainly killed right now. My wife and I both broke down in tears. For the rest of the day I didn't leave the couch. I sat there in my robe unable to move for hours. Finally around 2:30 I was able to shower but every few minutes I would still start crying. The next day I went to work and my hospital overlooked Manhattan. I had to force myself to look. There it was a column of smoke coming up from where the World Trade Center used to be. It was unbelievable. The people at work were just going through the paces. Nobody could concentrate. We were all like robots. One of the people who works in my department is a captain in the fire department and nobody knew what had happened to him. When it was all over I found out that the man in my department was wounded but he will be ok. Another firefighter I knew was dead. Six people at work lost husbands or fathers with one woman losing both her father and husband. To this day I still tear up about this. HBO had a special about it and I cried through most it. While typing this I keep tearing up. Today is the anniversary. I didn't want to work but I knew that if I didn't that I would just stay home and probably cry all day. We had a memorial at work and I started crying. I've done more crying this year than I have done in my entire life and I don't know when it will stop. A part of my heart was torn out when those towers went down and I don't think I will ever get over it.
