Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 happened while I slept, I am a midnight shift worker. As I awoke that incredible day, I turned on the TV before I got out of bed. I couldn't believe such a movie was on in the middle of the day, airplanes crashing into buildings, yound children might see this, I thought. Oh well, I'll change the channel, I don't want to wake up to such chaos that TV sometimes brings. I must have changed the channels a few times before I realized that I was watching continuing news coverage. But I was still unclear as to what exactly had happened. As the afternoon unraveled, I lay in bed, catching up to what had occured while I slept. The tragedy struck my heart in such way I didn't know I could feel such sorrow. Having lost a loved one I already understood that I must cherish every moment I spend with my friends and family. I had never realized though that I should cherish all the people of our country and all of the freedoms that we enjoy. Not many days have gone by in this past year that I have not thought about the events of 9/11. Today being that anniversary, I was listening to the radio and heard a dj say something about saying a prayer for those lost on that day. I did just that, I said a prayer, asking the Lord to keep all of those souls close, for they did not ask to be role models in the new war on terrorism, they just lived their lives on that day. I know this may not be a popular way of thinking, but I also asked the Lord to forgive those who died perpetrating this horrible act. I don't know the exact quote, but Jesus once said Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do. I don't condone any of these acts of terror, but I do believe in the "What Would Jesus Do" concept. I happened upon this site through an e-mail sent to me by another site. I had no forethought in what I have written, but I do hope my thoughts hold meaning for some readers. I remember as if it was yesterday, I was getting out of my boyfriends car and a guy came running up to us shoutting, " The Twin Towers have been hit." At first we looked at him like he was crazy because we had never seen him. But as soon as we got in to our first period class my teacher was crying. We didn't understand why till she put on the news. Her husband had been in New York where everything was happing. Every class we went to the T.V. was on to the news. Then it hit me, i finally knew what that guy was talking about. When i got home my parents had the T.V. on the same thing. It scared me because I just thought to my self that could of been us in all that mess. But at the same time it was us because we are all apart of the same country and what happend there effected everyone else. My parents couldn't believe what had happend. September 11 will always be emotional to me because I think about all the people who have lost their families, and i think how i would be with out my parents or any of my famliy. Not only am i sad but mad at the same time, i can't see how people can do this to some body else. As long as we stay as a nation and as one, we will get stronger. Tell us your story: I awoke about 9:20am on that unknowingly, and what would prove to be one of America's darkest, and most tragic mornings ever, September 11, 2001. I went into the den and turned on the tv. I became occupied and interested in the special news reports that were running on every major network. The reports were describing an unkown disaster, which had inflicted damage to one of N.Y's trade towers. It was stated that a massive fire had engulfed one of the towers, at that particular time, details of what initiated this fire was claimed to be "sketchy" at best. I had lost every perspective of time, as I watched on tv, the infamous events unfolded. I watched in unbelievable horror, as the continuing, and live coverage, captured the footage of an airliner-jet flying, and crashing into the other tower. I knew, at that very moment, America was under attack. Why, and who was responsible, was certainly, warranted questions. But in my mind, the questions would become burried by the powerful, and inhuman images of the great evilness, that took assault on the towers of The World Trade Center. I imediately thought about the great loss of life. Our freedom, and most importantly, the innocent victims, would be the sacrifice of such an enormous act of cowardness. As I watched Citizens, Rescue, Fire, and Police personel scramble to the tragic site, I became aware of the overwhelming senses of agony, outrage, and despair that coursed through each and every individual. My thoughts, more and more, reflected on the innocent victims, the feeling of commonly, and being a fellow American, was more certain than ever before. I too, felt the bearings of being a victim. Uncontrolable, I began to grieve and weep, my heart sank in great sorrow. Obviously, the families, friends, and all loved ones directly affected by the terror, would for always, have to endure all hardships of loss, on a much grander scale. America, I and my children's children will always respect in remembrance, September 11, 2001, and it's Heroes. May it's Liberty, our Freedom as a people, and the power to bring those responsible to Justice, never be tested again, in such a barbaric magnitude. As a nation, America will never be the same. We truely would, and will become "United", for as the name sake applies, and our Fore Fathers intended; with unsurpassed pride: The United States of America. Shortly after turning on CNN we watched in horror of not only the first tower burning but as the second tower was hit and we set in shock as to think who would do this. The temperature was somewhere in the eighties I think, pretty nice weather for the City. I wore one of my new outfits to school. It was the sixth day of school. It seemed like it was an unwritten rule that you wear something new the first couple days of school. Don?t ask me who came up with that. I wore a Billion Bay shirt. It was sky blue with the image of a tiger in its natural surroundings. I had on cargo khaki pants and a pair of moccasins. I thought I looked pretty decent. It was senior year for me at the Richard R. Green High School of Teaching. I along with everyone else was very excited. We had all finally made it. My family was proud as they should be. I?m the youngest child. I have one brother and one sister both of who are grown and out of the house. My co-workers at the New York City Mayor?s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) were also proud. They watched me grow from a curious fifteen year-old to a still curious seventeen year-old. The school looked different. I guess anything would look different after not seeing it for two months. Richard Green wasn?t a big school. It had about 650 students in a five story building. The school was named after Richard Green, New York City?s first African-American schools chancellor. He was in charge until 1989 when he suffered a massive asthma attack and died. We shared the building with PS 66, an elementary school serving mentally challenged students. We went by a first name basis at Green. The administration felt that going by last names would create an unnecessary gap. The school was located just two blocks away from Gracie Mansion, the Mayor?s official residence. I came into the building that morning and went to English class. My teacher was Marissa. She was cool and all but she needed to lay off the drugs, ha-ha, just kidding. She was a little hyper though. To be honest, I cannot recall what I did that period but in an hour and a half, nothing would matter. I had journalism second period. Second period started at 9 o?clock, twelve minutes after the first plane had struck one of the Towers. Journalism was a class none of the seniors had asked for. I would later come to appreciate it. Many of us were in the advanced placement (AP) program this year and the year before. For that reason, we weren?t able to take gym because our schedule was full. As a graduation requirement, a high school student needs seven gyms to graduate. To my knowledge, a lot of us didn?t have all our gyms. We asked Marci, the journalism teacher, what was up with our schedules. She basically told us that it was none of our business. Those were the kind of answers the seniors were getting. I became upset so I asked to go to the bathroom. In reality though, I was going to Elaine, the principal. She was such a charismatic person. She knew most of us by name. I stormed out of the classroom and made my way upstairs. On my way up there, I saw a girl crying in the stairwell. I didn?t think much of it because many girls in the school had their problems and I figured this was just another. I went to Elaine?s office and knocked on the door. Inside, she was seated with the Deans John and Don; the assistant principals Barbara and Isabel; and the guidance counselors? Seth, Laura, and Donna. She told me to get back to class. I was even more upset. Never had she turned me away. I went back to journalism feeling more defeated than before. We left journalism and headed to economics. The time was now 9:46 A.M. When I got to the room, Elaine met me by the door and told me that she was having a very important meeting and Don (who was also the economics teacher) would tell us what was going on. We stood in Economics discussing the latest gossip when Don rushed in and told us to sit down for he had a very important announcement to make. We sat down and he shuffled some papers on his desk. He then picked up a memo, possibly the only memo I will remember for the rest of my life: ?There has been an incident at the World Trade Center. If you have anyone in that area, please leave the room right now and go to the Crisis Center in room 307.? Many things rushed through my mind after hearing those words. My first reaction was to look at the beeper given to me by OEM. They sent out reports of various activities around the City. However, the last page I received from OEM was about a water main break in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, nothing about the World Trade Center. I knew something was wrong so I literally dropped everything and ran out of the room on my way to the crisis center. My eyes began to tear up. When I got there, people were already seated in a circle. In charge was Barbara, the assistant principal for security and pupil-personnel services. For some reason, I had that gut-wrenching feeling that something was terribly wrong. She began to speak. ?From what we know, a small plane has struck the Twin Towers. Until we get more information, let?s talk about our experiences with our loved ones.? What the hell was she talking about?! Experiences? loved ones? What was she trying to say or do? People were getting angry and I was one of them. The main reason I guess was because no one knew what the heck was going on. Almost all communication was lost and that was truly scary. Many land lines were down; cell phones barely received signals, fax machines. It was the worst. Again, Barbara told us what was happening. She said something about the World Trade Center that wasn?t entirely correct. She said that from what people know so far, this was not an act of violence. In a matter of fact, no one knew what it was. But I knew it was terrorism right from the start. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! For the thirty years those beautiful towers were up, a plane has never come close to hitting and now this! Ever since a small single engine plane struck the Empire State Building in the 1930?s, planes were restricted from flying over Manhattan Island. Being that I was at the Trade Center daily, I explained to the people seated in the room that the World Trade Center was much more than just the Twin Towers. It was comprised of seven buildings, three of which were tall enough to be hit by a plane: buildings One, Two, and Seven. Each building had its own reason for being a target. One and Two World Trade Center was obviously the tallest with the most people in them. It was the symbol of America?s financial strength. Seven World Trade Center housed many government agencies those of which I am not going to reveal. Also in 7 WTC were financial giants such as Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Salomon Smith Barney. In addition, there was a mall in the concourse area that ran under buildings one through six. Underneath the mall, was a transportation hub that included several New York City subway lines and the PATH system which was a train that connected New York City and New Jersey. I pulled out my cell phone. Although they were not allowed in school, I didn?t care at this point and I wanted someone to tell me something about it. The first call I made was to my job. I figured that if anyone would know what was going on, it would be OEM. I called and called but no one answered. I would later find out that they would have to evacuate. I couldn?t control my anger anymore so I left the room. Laura, the guidance counselor, saw how upset I was so she asked ?who do you know down there?? I told her that I knew the kids at the day care center in Five World Trade Center and I worked in Seven World Trade Center. We went back to her office and tried to see if any form of communication worked. But nothing did. I then decided to call City Hall. That?s one of the few calls I managed to get out. Someone answered the phone and I asked if ?the Mayor?s Office of Emergency Management was evacuated?? All they could tell me was that they didn?t know. It was now time to switch classes. The time was roughly 10:33 A.M. The attacks, oh, sorry, ?accident? was the topic. My friends Rachel and Jenneal brought my book bag and stuff down from class. They comforted me and soon remembered something: our other friend Carlshea cut school and was supposed to be around 59th Street. Fifty-Ninth Street was the sight of another famous skyscraper, the Citigroup Building. At the time, we didn?t know what was going on so any and everything looked like a target. Rachel also figured out that her dad was in the area so she got real upset. I needed and wanted to know what was going on so I decided to go downstairs. On my way down, Wallace the security guard stopped me. He told me that I couldn?t go downstairs or outside. I looked back and said ?what do you mean we can?t go downstairs? People we love are possibly dying and I will not stay up here if I have to make a phone call. Typical Board of Education.? What the last part of that statement had to do with anything else, I don?t know but I was to the point where I didn?t care who I was talking to. I stomped down the steps and went in front of the school. I called my sister to ask if she had heard anything at all. She said that she didn?t. I called my mom who was in search of answers herself. When I called, she answered and asked if I had heard from anyone at the Mayor?s Office. I told her no. The main reason I called her though was to find out what was going on. But all she could say was that the towers were flat. I yelled at her and told her that was impossible. She told me to shut up. I was yelling at her as I stood in front of my school telling her how impossible that was. Just then, one of the poll workers (it was Election Day in the City) came to me and told me that it was true. The Towers were indeed gone. I went into the courtyard of my school where many kids were. Everyone was trying to get in touch with somebody. I found Rachel and Jenneal both of whom were trying to make phone calls. We stood there trying to decide how we were going to get home. All public transportation in the City had been suspended. All three of us lived out of Manhattan which is an island for those of you not familiar with New York City. The bridges and tunnels were closed. There was a rumor circulating that school kids would have to stay the night. I returned back to the Crisis Center. We weren?t being forced to go back to classes. I mean after all, this was no ordinary day. I got a page out to Jos? Garcia, one of the computer techs at OEM. He had told me that OEM was ?dead.? I also got another page out to David Longshore, a public information officer at OEM. Not understanding the magnitude of what was going on, I said ?David, where are we going to work?? His response was ?Jaffir, possibly tens of thousands of people could be dead. Where we work is the least of our troubles.? I got several pages out to Frank McCarton, the public information head at OEM. I kept asking him what?s going on and all he could tell me was to stay home. He didn?t realize that I was in school. As 2:30 P.M. came, an announcement was made that unless we have a way home or place to stay after school, we were to remain in school. This kid Richie who I only knew through a friend agreed to let me, Rachel, and this girl Dana stay by his house until we found a way home. We walked to his house that was on 113th Street. For the first time all day, I got a chance to see what was actually happening. From the intersection of 88th Street and First Avenue, you could see smoke rising. By this time, my nerves and emotions had already been shot. We called Rachel?s mom to see if she could pick us up, but how could she? The entire island was shut down. Nothing was allowed in or off. We thanked Richie and his family for their hospitality and we went back to school. When were got there, pizza was bought. I sat down and ate trying to figure out how to get home. The trains started working again but still I didn?t want to travel by myself. If the events of the day didn?t kill me, the other passengers on the train would certainly have. I decided to go to Rachel?s house. From there, her dad would take me home. Dana, Rachel, and myself hopped on the Queens bound ?E?. When I got off the island, I wanted to fall to the ground and ball. I never realized how much I valued that crowded train or that hot City bus. I got to Rachel?s house and her mom gave me dinner. By this time, the President began to address the nation. The time was 8:30 P.M. I am no big fan of ?W? but this night, it was different. On the way home, everything was closed. All streets that led to Manhattan were closed with police officers on guard. My mom greeted me at the door. I remember stepping into the house and not feeling any sort of emotion. I wasn?t happy or sad. I was just? here. My mom gave me all my phone messages from people wondering if I was in the area when it happened and if I was ok. I stayed home for about five minutes then headed to the roof of my building. From there, you have, well had, a perfect view of the Towers. All that remained now was a smoke cloud. Even after standing there not seeing the Towers, I was still emotionless. My mind couldn?t comprehend the destruction that had taken place earlier. I seemed okay on the outside, but inside, I was ripped to shreds. From as far back as I can remember, the Twin Towers had a special place in my heart. I would stay late after work everyday just to see them light up in the night sky. When it rained, the clouds passing over created this effect that I cannot describe. When I had a chance to go to the observation deck, the view was breath-taking. I was on top of the world in the best buildings in the universe. Nothing could ever top those Twin Towers that seemed gold in the morning sun. They were indeed Twins. When one fell, the other saw it as its ultimate mission to join its brother. They defined a Country, a City, and most importantly, a people who stand tall and proud of its heritage and achievements. My kids were in school and I was watching the TV when the first plane had already hit. I watched the second plane hit and called my mother-in-law. We watched in disaray !! I have been Military all my life and knew what this ment for my husband and our Family. The military post closed down no one could come or go. It was very strange to see the streets, ribbons went up flags went hafe mass. The kids came home. Life changed that moment, we would all be different. I watch familys looking for loved ones, as my phone rang with family asking what would come of my husband. What would happen now. We are at war, and every day I wake I tell my kids I Love them. And I pray for the families who can not do the same. We are strong and we are one and some how we will find a way to help one another understand. Take your child and hug him or her, tell your family you love them. And know my husband will fight with his life to defend your family and the life you live. I woke up at 6:00 a.m. just like i do every morning, got ready for school, went downstairs and ate breakfest with my dad. I then went outside to wait for the bus. I got to school, did my daily routine of first going to my locker and talking with friends. Then my friends Jill, Bre, and Kristen walked me to my Spanish Class, just like we do every morning. I sat through my boring Spanish class, and then went off to seccond period Global where we were learning about the Taliban. We were having a normal class discussion when one of the other teachers came running over to our classroom and told our teacher Mrs. Capen to turn on the television our classroom. So we turned it on to CNN and saw the seccond plane crash right into the twin towers, and what i still cannot belive, is that we saw it live! Our whole class just seemed to sit there in silence with a look of disbelief on their faces. This must be a joke we thought, there's no way this could be happening. But it wasn't a joke. We sat there and watched CNN for the rest of the class, in total silence. No one made andy stupid comments, or continued a conversation with a friend, like we usually would. America had been attacked, somthing like this hasn't happend since Pearl Harbor. After the bell rang telling us class was over, we all slowly got out of our seats and kept our eye on the television as we were walking out. As we all walked out of our classrooms that day, everyone was feeling different about what happened. Some people were full of anger at not only what had happened, but who had done it to us. Many people felt that the blame should be on all Afgans, and showed a great deal of anger toward them. Others were just sad, and most of us were both angery and sad that anyone would ever do this to the United States. We continued to watch the news for updates that whole day, in every class. And when we saw our friends in the hallway we didn't talk about what we were going to do that weekend or the latest gossip, we talked about what had just happened, and how we were going to deal with it. No one wanted to be in school when this happened; they just wanted to go home to their families where they flet safe. I remember the night of September 11, my friend Jill called me. We must have talked on the phone for at least an hour just about September 11, how it effected us, and how scared we both were. This was such a hard time for everyone, we all needed someone to talk to. Everyone started acting nicer to one another you could be at the mall and someone would do somthing as simple asjust hold the door open for you. Everyone was showing signs of unity. I know that September 11 will be a day remembered in history forver, and maybe people will not always be as kind to others, but our country will always have a special bond, that can never be broken, not by anyone! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 began for me like i'm sure it did for everyone else, a beautiful ~ clear morning. I was sitting in my living room watching the news preparing my "to do list" as the reports went to a live shot of the 1st Tower with the black smoke billowing from the huge hole....I sat in utter amazement, almost spellbound. Then as they were discussing all the "possibilities" and how with the skies being so clear that morning an accident seemed unlikely "unless there was a mechanical malfunction" when the 2nd plane came into view and slammed into the 2nd tower. There was no misunderstanding now what was happening, America was Under Attack~! I immediately called my Grandmother, who was 88yrs old at the time, she too was seeing this unfold live on the tv. My grandfather was in the Navy when Pearl Harbor was attacked, her twin sons had served in Korea and Vietnam. I'll never forget her words to me "I didn't think that I would live to see anything like Pearl Harbor again, but as terrible as that was, they are attacking everyday people, not military targets, until a lot of changes take place America will never again be safe. We have been ignoring warnings of this thinking no one would attack us at home, maybe now people will wake up". I couldn't agree more with her words. I was heartbroken, tears flowed freely from my eyes for hours as I watched in utter disbelief and horror as the Pentagon was hit, and then Flight 93 went down in PA. I thought of my husband, at work, where we couldn't reach each other til his shift was finished. At that moment all I wanted was to hear his voice. My need to hear his reassuring voice was just a glimpse of how thousands of family members, friends, and loved ones were feeling. I thought of how the people on the first plane must have thought they would be flown to some small country - held for a few hours - negotiations would be done and they would be fine. But those on the other planes knew different. I thought of how they must have felt, all the things that crossed their minds of stuff they wished they had said to loved ones, or maybe they had said something in anger that they didn't get a chance to apologize for...My heart was aching and remembering my own tragedies and the pain and hurt i have dealt with, knowing that each and every person lost their families would be dealing with a tragedy of epic proportions in full sight of the world. I lost my mother in an accidental shooting when i was five years old. I was standing right beside her at the time. Then 10yrs ago i lost my stepmother and father in a murder/suicide. I was pictured on the front page of our local newspaper and our story was the lead story on the news. Which was devastating. My heart went out to each family member that had lost someone that day. I have suffered traumatic loss, it is never easy, but my story was gone from the news after a day or so, this story plays and replays and will continue too for years and years. Many of the families that lost loved ones their children or grandchildren will read about 9-11 in their history books. But there are a great number of similarities between my loss and those lost on 9-11. It was unexpected. No forewarning. No second chances. Everything was fine one minute and devastated the next. Also, my life is divided in two distinct sections. There is the part before the murder/suicide ~ and the after. Just as those who lost someone 9-11, their lives will be divided as well. Cause everything changes. And everything revolves around the event. 9-11 changed me too. Even though i was hundreds of miles from the nearest attack area, in the mountains of Tennessee. The way I live my day to day life has changed. I evaluate things more today. I also make sure that everyday I tell those around me how much i love them, and how much they mean to me. At 33, i think quite often about my own mortality. My husband and I have discussed our "final arrangements" and how we want things to be, etc, something we had never done and probably wouldn't have done prior to 9-11. It puts everything into perspective. It made us realize how small we really are. That no matter how large and beautiful and strong our buildings are we are not shielded from harm. We were thrilled to see and hear God being discussed, prayers in public, etc., We feel sure that no one would sue if they knew that their children's teacher had them pray during the attacks. Patriotism was everywhere. Flags were everywhere. The United States was United. Atleast for awhile. My greatest fear is that the further we get from the actual day of the attacks, people will begin to forget just how terrible it really was. I fear we'll go back instead of forward. I pray daily for comfort to come to those who suffered so much that day and in the days since. I pray for our country and our leaders. I also pray for our enemies, that they will find a peace within themselves and realize that killing innocent people - participating in terrorist attacks will never bring them the happiness & peace they so desperately are seeking. I had just seen the bus off when i went inside to care for my two year old daughter. My daughter was watching nickjr when my mother called. She called and was very upset crying telling me to turn on the news. when i turned on the news i saw to my shock the second plane hitting tower two. I was in complet shock and horror. Word spread throughout our company that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center and i remember thinking that it must be an accident. Then word came that yet another airplane had crashed into the second building and we immediately knew that America was under attack. Shortly thereafter news came that the Pentagon was also struck and there was a feeling of disbelief, panic, insecurity, shock, and horror at what was happening to our country. I am not a news watcher and for an entire week i could only watch the news. I am not a sentimental person, and for a week i could only cry for the pain and suffering the victims and everyone who loved them felt. This was a terrible tragedy... God Bless those who died living their daily lives as well as the heroes who sacrificed theirs so that a stranger may live, God Bless the families and friends who lost so much, and most of all God Bless America... may we grow united and always carry the memory of that horrific day in our hearts... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As an American citizen travelling abroad on September 11, 2001, I experienced the tragedies of that day in a sense of remove. For more than 20 years I had dreamed of visiting Venice. My husband and I had planned a three-week trip to Italy for April of 2001. We planned to spend three days in Venice. Unfortunately, my mother was diagnosed with cancer in March; and we had to postpone our trip until September. For many reasons, our re-scheduled trip would only allow us one day in Venice--September 11. We took an early morning train from Florence to Venice and arrived late morning. We strolled along the canals, stopping in at various places of interest along the way. After lunch, we were browsing in an eyeglass shop when one of the shop assistants asked if we had heard about the "bombings in the U.S." We replied that we had not, and the clerk proceeded to tell us that the World Trade Towers "Torre Gemmeli" had been destroyed,that the Pentagon had been bombed, and that thousands of people had lost their lives. My husband was skeptical that anyone could succeed in bombing the Pentagon and therefore questioned the validity of the story. As we continued our walk around Venice, we encountered more and more shell-shocked looking people, all of whom were telling the same story. Finally, from the street, we heard a television report coming out of a bar. We went in to see for ourselves. There we were greeted by the now all-too-well-known pictures of the two collapsing towers and a Pentagon in flames. We had a quick dinner and returned to Florence by train. In our rented apartment we turned on the TV and learn what else we could. However, we had no access to English-language broadcasts and had to glean what we could from the Italian reports. It was several days before we could obtain an English-language newspaper. In the meantime, we decoded what we could of the Italian reports and ascertained that family back in the U.S. were unharmed. Ten days after September 11 we returned to Washington, DC on a very empty Sabena airplane. We returned to a country quite different from the one we left some three weeks earlier. Everywhere there were American flags and signs proclaining, "God bless America." And what of Venice? I can hardly remember anything but what transpired on U.S. soil on that day. I had the radio off and was pondering to myself just what would be the next "big event" in history. What would be the next "Where were you when" that is talked about years later. The JFK assassination, the Challenger disaster. etc. <br> When I arrived at work, a co-worker was watching the TV set in the breakroom and told me that a jetliner had crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. I dashed to the phone and called my parents in twon, telling them to get up and turn on the TV. <br> As a child growing up in the New York Area, I clearly remember watching the twin towers being built. How they slowly crept up the skyline to dominate the view. How they became such a strong symbol for New York City. Like a symbol in an Ayn Rand novel, as if Manhattan had sprouted arms and was shaking it's fists at the sky. <br> I refilled the supplies in the bathrooms and returned to the breakroom to make the coffee, when my fellow employee told me another jetliner had hit the second tower. I felt sick to my stomach. This was claerly a terrorist act. We were at war. <br> As the other employees filed in to work, we all seemed to be in a daze, with everything happening in slow motion. <br> Finally, the news that the towers were falling. We dashed enmasse to the breakroom and watched the footage of the towers crumbling into dust. First one, then the other. <br> I don't remember doing so, but a co-worker told me later that I was pounding my fist into the arm of a chair in that room. <br> We got very little work done that day. I listened to the news reports on my Walkman, as the music stations interrupted their programming for live news and interviews. The Mexican workers had their radios tuned to Spanish stations, but instead of the lively, peppy music, they played somber-toned announcers and music on acoutsic guitars, sung by solo vocalists. One of the Mexicans told me they were hymns and songs of mourning. <br> After work, I sat at my computer and sent e-mail to friends in the NYC area. All were fine. A friend from Beruit sent me an e-mail saying that there was no excuse for this upon anyone, and that the best thing we as Americans could do would be to get back to our regular routines once again. <br> I went to bed that night, feeling as if I had been through two days worth of events. <br> The following days saw the world mouring with the USA. All over the world, there was an outpouring of grief and support for us. I also saw a rush of American flags everywhere. <br> I also noticed that people began to act responcibly and curtiously towards each other. As if people began to care. <br> Several miles away, on the Las Vegas Strip, the area near the firefighter tugboat in front of the Statue of Liberty replica at the New York New York casino had been turned into an impromptu shrine for the fallen firefighters. To this day, there is a steady supply of t-shirts from fire depatrments from all over the world, strewn along the fence. <br> That was then, this is now. We are hated once again for taking a beligerant attitude towards Iraq, acting alone if need be. Many wondering aloud if this upcoming war is nothing more than a front to increase our access to cheap oil. <br> On 11 September 2001, a new world did not begin. <br> We simply discovered that there was a veryhostile world outside of our borders, and that there was nothing that could change it, nor could we ignore it. <br> Still, there are those who bury their heads in conspiracy theories, blaming others, often illusionary cartels of shadowy figures, for America's ills. <br> We were given a monumental wake up call...and we simply rolled over and hit the "Snooze" button. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I live in Scotlnad, and I had been working over the summer as a camp counsellor in up state New York. I had decided that I was going to travel for a while, so I went to Canda, and other places, and my last stop was NYC before I went home. I had planned on Tuesday morning to try and get tickets for the Rosie O Donnell show, but I had actually slept in and was too late. Anyway, I thought if this happened I would do the tourist thing and go to the WTC and the Empire State Building. I thought that I would walk, I knew it would be long, but I took in some sites and stopped for a coffee. By this time I was eventually nearing the WTC, and I could see smoke but not exactly were it was coming from. I thought nothing of it and carried on walking. About ten minutes later I realised the smoke was coming from the WTC, and I was looking at my map to see exactly were I was. There were a lot of people standing around watching, and all of a sudden I hesrd this huge rumble in the air and out of no where a plane smashed into the other building there was a huge fireball that went all the way up the building. There were a lot of people screaming, and some had a terrified look on thier face, I was one of them. I did not hang around for long as I thought that something else would happen, I thought straight away that it was no accident. All I could think about were my family back home watching this on the tv an wondering if I was there. I got back to the youth hostel I was staying in and phoned them straight away. I sat in my room contemplating what I had seen and thinking what if? I sat in my room for a long time I eventually went downstairs and herd that the towers had collapsed, it was devestating. I heard some stories that day though, a couple who had just arrived were jet lagged and they got up and had already been up to the top of the WTC, which gave me the creeps. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: There was never a more chilling sight than the tragedy of September 11 of 2001. I was 21, only a year ago, but it opened my eyes to a world that I have yet to discover the words to explain. I watch horror movies all the time but there was a reality to what I was witnessing on television. I lost my breath and I cried for those people as they jumped from the NYC TradeTowers to save their lives. I wanted God to come at that moment and save them all but the entire Trade Center went crashing down. I didn't want to believe in God after seeing that but I know that God didn't want those people to perrish but their are some 'ass holes' living in this world who don't have appreciation for the entire team and one love. I saw people I hadn't seen in years after the tragedy and the pain from the past seemed like a joke. May this event shape the globe into the heart that it is and for everyone who reads this may your heart pour out a love that will touch everyone around you and maybe (just maybe) terrorist attacks will be a thing of the past. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was working with another volunteer in a community food pantry. We had just opened the doors when I received a call from my mother telling us a plane had hit the first tower. Calls continued to come but we didn't realize the full impact of what was going on. We heard it was a small plane, or a jet fighter, or a bomb had gone off. It was a couple of hours later before we understood the magnitude of what was happening in our country. Both of us had sons away at college across the country in Nashville, TN, Cleveland, TN and Denver CO. Our first desire was to talk to our children. We knew they were away from the danger but there is just that need to hear their voices. As we finished working at the pantry and were able to return to our homes, like the rest of the nation, I was glued to my television. My church organized a prayer vigil for that night. Our minister of music had downloaded pictures from the internet that we were able to show that night as we prayed. We had people from different occupations from our congregation lead us in prayer for different groups; police chiefs, firefighters, mothers, students, teachers, the armed forces...for that one night we were all one family. We all hurt and this was the only thing we could do that would make a difference. May we continue to call on the Lord and bring our country back to the Christian nation it once was. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11 started as an ordinary day. My husband drives me to work most mornings on the Gowanus Expressway in Brooklyn, down to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and into lower Manhattan. I worked in the World Financial Center South Tower in Merrill Lynch. This was directly across from the South Tower of the World Trade Center. That morning as we made our way down the Gowanus and into the EZ Pass lanes, we were suddenly delayed in our lane when the EZ Pass equipment didn?t work for the car in front of us. The policeman had to take the license plate number and tag number of that car, and from us, before we could proceed. As we waited for clearance, I noted it was 8:40 a.m. I became restless because I had wanted to be at work well before 9:00 a.m. We finally proceeded into the tunnel about five minutes later. Halfway through the tunnel, half the tunnel lights went out and when we reached the Manhattan side, we were suddenly facing a burning WTC North Tower. We thought something terrible must have happened inside. It must have been a bomb. My husband left me off in front of the tunnel across from Battery Park City, realizing he could not get through on West Street. I didn?t realize it until later, but the five minute delay at the EZ Pass could have saved us from injury or death as we would have been very near the towers if we went through the tunnel on time. As I crossed West Street, the horror of the situation started to dawn on me. All I could think of was the people inside the Tower and how would they escape. Then I started to notice debris and hysteria along West Street, on the sidewalk and on the highway itself. I asked a few people if I could help them, but they just shook their heads no as they cried. I ran to the World Financial Center South Tower where my office was. People stood stunned and crying. When I entered the building, I ran to a phone to call my mother-in-law to tell her I was fine and Ed (my husband) was on his way back to Brooklyn. She then told me a plane had hit the tower and wondered why I was continuing into the building. I said that I would try to get to my office, but would follow directions if I was turned away. I went through the turnstiles of the South Tower, and I seemed to be the only person going in when everyone else seemed to be leaving. I went up to the 14th floor, to see more people leaving, but when I reached my department my manager and division director seemed to be trying to get information and make and answer calls. When I reached my office, I called my husband on the cell phone, telling him I was there and OK. At that point, he was in front of the Brooklyn Battery tunnel, heading back towards Brooklyn, and said he thought another plane was coming. I didn?t understand what he was talking about. (Later on I learned that the second plane passed right over the entrance to the tunnel, and my husband saw it crash into the second tower. He was stuck in traffic in front of the tunnel until just a few minutes before that tower fell.) The next thing I knew, we were told we had to evacuate. A group of us gathered and we were told it appeared we were under an attack. We made our way down the stairs and exited in front of the Winter Garden, near the North Cove. There were hundreds of people there, and suddenly we would hear shouts and I suddenly realized the people were shouting as people were jumping from the Towers. I looked once, saw one person fall, and then turned my back to the Towers. It was too horrible to look at. The smoke was so black, and the towers just completely obliterated by the smoke. I couldn?t believe what was happening. I had the feeling we should get out of Manhattan altogether; that we were at terrible risk. Initially I stood by the Ferry dock, but then our management told us to begin heading home or to safety. I then had a decision to make. Policemen were telling us to go North. However, one of our managers, who had recently relocated from London back to New York, had the use of a Corporate Apartment in Battery Park City until he moved into his permanent residence in Brooklyn. Knowing I lived in Brooklyn, as well as another one of our Associates, he offered us the opportunity to come there and make calls, and then perhaps head later on for the Brooklyn Bridge or Staten Island Ferry. I agreed to go. We walked the few blocks south to the apartment and went up to the 14th floor. We weren?t in the apartment more than a minute when we suddenly heard what appeared to be a low flying jet plane. We thought we were under attack again. Not knowing where to run, we got away from the windows and headed towards the hallway, when it became evident, it was the sound of the South Tower falling. We heard screams of people in the street, and saw the dark cloud of debris fill everywhere outside. The apartment started to fill with smoke. We headed towards the basement, only to be told to go back up. The basement was filling with smoke. Then, we began to hear on CNN, that the Pentagon was hit, and maybe more buildings, like the Sears Tower. Suddenly, I felt like I must be dreaming. I wanted to wake up, but realized I was awake, and that this was the worst nightmare one could imagine, and that I just might not live through this. I said some silent prayers. Then, the second tower fell. This time it became as black as night. It was truly black. Then slowly, some light started to show through, but the electricity was now out. No lights, or TV, or air in the apartment. Now, I wanted to leave when the dust settled. We sat for about 10 or 15 minutes, and then came a knock at the door that we had to evacuate. There was the danger of gas explosions. We made our way down the stairs, in total darkness, feeling our way with the help of one of the apartment tenants who came out on the stairs in the floor below. Before we left the apartment, we wet towels to put over our nose and mouth when we got outside. Outside was nuclear winter. Debris was still falling like snow flurries. We didn?t know where to go first, but then heard the sound of a policeman directing people toward the South Cove. We ran in that direction and found several police boats. I got into a boat, and thought the others did also, but they actually began to walk North towards the Brooklyn Bridge. I was so relieved to be on the boat and heading to Jersey. As a true Brooklynite and city person, New Jersey never looked so good. The boat took us to Liberty State Park, and I wandered around there among hundreds of people waiting for announcements. There was a large triage center there with dozens of emergency workers and dozens of ambulances. Most of us just wandered and waited. I was finally able to get through to my husband on the cell phone and tell him where I was. I finally looked at my watch. It was near 1:00 p.m. I had no sense of time. Finally, it was announced that buses would take us, women with children first, to an old Army Reserve Center in Jersey City called Caven Point. Several buses arrived and we were driven with police escort to that location. Army men took our names at the center so that people could find us. There were several hundred people at the center and when some food arrived near 3:00 p.m., it was all gone before most of us could get to it. There were, however, cases of water and soft drinks. Then after about an hour, we were told that some of us might want to go to the Marine Ocean terminal, a former naval base, where there would be better chances for transportation home. After calling my husband about this change, he thought I should go; that it would bring me closer to home. On my way to the bus, I finally met a Merrill colleague who had just transferred to a new department a few weeks before. I was never so happy to see someone I knew. I told him where I was going and he thought he should go there as well. He later recounted how he could have lost his life when the first tower went down. His youngest child was at the WTC child care center and he was attempting to get her after the towers were hit, but he was sent away and out of danger. Thankfully, his child was already out of the center and was fine. We were then taken to Marine Ocean Terminal in Bayonne. We were put in a large gymnasium. There were men, women, babies, children, and many dogs. The Mayor of Bayonne was wonderful. He kept us informed and tried to make us feel comfortable, but there wasn?t a lot of good news about getting home. Our only options for that night were to walk over the Bayonne Bridge to Staten Island, or to go to Newark Penn station to points south, north or west. Some people did take advantage of those options which brought our numbers down somewhat in the gymnasium. In the end, there were probably 150+ people there. The Mayor of Bayonne, the local police, firemen and EMTs and other citizens did their best to help us through that stay. We had two priests among us offering grief counseling. We had a full course dinner donated by a local Italian eatery, cookies and milk at 10:00 p.m., and non-stop coffee, tea, sodas and water. They had put a large radio in the gymnasium that was on constantly through the night. Local boyscouts brought us mats to sleep on, sheets and pillow cases, and tee shirts from a local sanitation company. We received toothbrushes and toothpaste, paper towels and soap, and mouthwash. They got prescription drugs for those of us who needed them, since we didn?t know what time we would get home the next day. Later on into the night we received heavier blankets because it became quite cool. They had the doors open all night. They put four phones in the gymnasium where we could make phone calls. Even into the night, there were lines to the phones. We would go outside and look across the water and see the fires burning under a clear night sky. At 4:00 a.m., I couldn?t sleep. Every time I closed my eyes I saw the burning towers. I got up from my mat, and there was every type of breakfast item you could imagine. There were many of us wandering around at 4:00 a.m. The policemen stood by the doors and asked if they could help us in any way. Did we want to talk? Shortly before dawn, newspapers were delivered to the gymnasium. We all gathered around to see the papers, and suddenly I realized what I had escaped. Finally, at 8:00 a.m., we had a briefing. We were told that buses would arrive at 9:00 a.m. to take us to Staten Island. So, those of us living in Brooklyn and Staten Island prepared to go to the buses. Bayonne officials and one of the priests came on the bus and wished us well. The priest gave us his blessing. Once again we were escorted, all the way to the Staten Island Mall. I had called my husband and he met me at the bus and then we returned to Brooklyn. It was September 12, and our 25th Wedding Anniversary. I am so grateful to my management who led us out of our building that day, the manager who led us to his apartment and thereby sheltered us from the worst of the debris, the Mayor and citizens of Bayonne, and last, but certainly not least, I thank you God for guiding me to all the right places. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Living so near the pentagon I'm sure there are kids in my area that lost family memebers. Luckly I didn't lose anyone. I think it's great how much support and donations have gone out to relatives to those who lost their lives. I don't think their was much we could have done to prevent these attacks sense they were so unexpected. When I first heard that the planes were flying from DC to Chicago I was worried cause my father flew out that morning from a plan Chicago bound. Luckily he wasn't. Now that this has happened there is no need to worry about it because we can not change the past but what we can do is help prevent it in the future. George W. Bush has already shown that he isn't planning on stopping till terrism is gone.
