<text>I work downtown Birmingham, AL. I was almost to the parking
lot when the first plane crashed into the WTC. My first
reason for the crash,I thought, was pilot error. After I got
to work, I learned it was not accident. I just couldn't
believe that this was a terrorist attack. As the
days and nights past, I cried with these people as they
searched for love ones. It was like losing a member of my
immediate family. The thing I wanted most was to gather
my family and pray. I still get a sick feeling today as I
think of the date which is near. My heart goes out to all
those families that were touched personally by this act. I
will keep them in my prayers as September 11, 2002
approaches.

<text>I was drinking coffee and half-heartedly watching TV news when the report came on that the first tower was hit--they knew not just what had happened and said "we'll now go to [someone] at the scene for further details" at which point a reporter first mentioned that a plane of unknown origin had crashed into the WTC. Just then we all witnessed the second plane hit the other WTC tower. Perhaps I was numb or in shock. I had just lost my mother September 2nd and was unable to travel to Scotland for her 9/6 funeral, so I was in poor emotional health. Anyway, I just got up and got ready and drove to work and went through the rest of the day as usual, I guess. I cried that night when I went to bed because I knew how the loved ones left behind must feel at losing their precious family member(s) or close friend(s) or co-worker(s) and feel so lost and helpless. Just a raw, empty hole in one's heart followed by excrutiating pain. Just when you think you're getting better, along comes the anniversary and you discover you are still hurting deep inside for your own and others' losses. God bless us all--here in the United States of America and all around the world. </text>

Subject: September 11, 2001 Experiences and Thoughts

Date: September 14, 2001

I flew into Dallas Fort Worth Airport at 7 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, 2001 ... after having a wonderful visit with my son in Lubbock .... while awaiting my 9:50 a.m. flight to Nashville I went in search of a bag of pretzels .. Oh my Lord in Heaven .. what did I find ... I looked up at the TV in the bar/eating place near gate 25 at DFW and wondered why the TV was showing the World Trade Center Bombing ... when I turned to ask what was going on ... I saw the second aircraft fly into the second building and noticed the "LIVE COVERAGE" caption on the screen .. never have I felt the feeling that came over me ... literally "came over me" ... it was like a splash of cold water, my hair stood on end, cold and numb at the same time ... a few minutes later .. when the aircraft flew into the Pentagon .... I knew that we were at war ... WAR .. I looked around to see if I was the only person stunned and trying not to go down to my knees in horror, surely to God it was a dream, a nightmare I was in ... as I looked back into the corridor and room ... no less than 150 people were standing there crying, hugging one another, speechless substantiating the fact that this was true cold reality .... I'll never forget the overall silence of disbelief and I will never know the innocent life of the days before September 11, 2001 again. A very dramatic statement I know ... but the truth.

Isn't it funny how approximately 30 minutes can change a world and a way of life .. the gruesome horror of the act .. the touching humanity that resulted from that act is comparably unbelievable .. during the time I was in Dallas everyone walked trying to find that "first way home" but also met each other eye to eye, you did not meet one person just walking down the corridor of the hotel or airport that didn't look at you directly, maybe not a word was passed but compassion was relayed to each other by a look ... we shared stories ... I think possibly because we were "all in the same boat" as it were, but also we had to reach out to each other and needed human contact so badly and although we'd never met before, and will never meet again, if we didn't, we'd go mad alone in our grief, separated from our families as we were.
You know ... I want to stop thinking and crying and re-living just what I experienced which is so very small compared to so many others, but I never want to forget my initial feeling .. the impact I received when I didn't know when I'd get home ... when I witnessed first hand the basic core of people in that airport and motel from all nationalities that didn't look at the inconvenience but showed their instinctive act to reach out and help and calm someone that needed it more than you.

I want to thank .. the boy sitting next to me as we watched the initial horror, he let me borrow his cell phone to call Steve because the lines were so great at the pay phones and I so desperately needed to hear his voice ... to the employee at the ticket counter at ASA that called Elliott for me in Lubbock and allowed me to tie up his line to talk with my son ... to the security lady that told me exactly how to reach a phone to book a hotel at the airport ... to the security guard that talked to me and calmed me and showed me where to wait for the shuttle to the motel ... to the lady named "Sun" that booked my motel room when so many others had to be turned away ... to every person I met and talked with and empathized with during those 3 days in Dallas. I will always remember the fellow from Montreal and the guy from Nigeria who tried to explain Islam ways of believing to the lady stranded from New York who brought it all so much closer to us by not knowing if her nephew, a firefighter in NY and a cousin that worked at the WTC was alright or not. To the lady from Albuquerque that had brain surgery the year before and survived, to the guy that lived in NJ but was born at Fort Campbell, a self proclaimed "army brat".

I'm home now, my flag is flying, I pray more now than I've done in quite some time ... I don't think I'll ever quit praying .. I think of our wonderful parents and family that have died .. and I think of God taking them knowing how much they can help Him with the great influx of souls soaring up over the past days. Just as I think of the people that died during and after the events on September 11 ... you know, I've always wondered what my purpose of life was .. we know their purpose of life ... it was to bring us back a unity that I don't think has been felt since the depression. I remember my Mom every Christmas as we put up the Christmas tree at our home and as we uncovered those clear blue ornaments that Mom said were made during the depression and she would tell us every year about how people of every class being one and helping each other and having a common cause and goal due to the outside influences beyond their control at the time. Here we are again, this is our call, and the lives lost this week had meaning not only in the people that knew them as they walked in life ... but now to us that will never know them personally, but we now know their souls and spirit and it's up to us to never let their life purpose be forgotten. May we all pass away from this life with such a noble purpose.

Now is the time to forgive and forget past anger and injustices ... now is the time to embrace everyone and everything that has made you what you are today and what you will be tomorrow. May my God and your God watch over us and give us peace and wisdom this day and forever.

<text>A letter I wrote shortly after the attacks to my future grandchildren:

September 17, 2001

Dear Ones:

How can you speak of the unspeakable horror? On one hand, I feel talking about it trivializes it, but on the other, voicing these horrors, telling the story, makes the unimaginable, real.

Your granddan and I were in New York City when, in an attack on America, the World Trade Center, two over 100 story buildings, and thousands of lives were destroyed by terrorists. We were witnesses of the outrage.

We realize that the people that commit these acts delight in causing evil. They need no justification in their small minds for their despicable actions other than hate. Already people are debating about getting involved in a war against these cells of terror thinking they had reasons or causes for such hatred.

If we do not commence war against these evil people now, when do we do it? Do we let these terrorists commit some more atrocious acts? War is not pretty, but, at least, there is justification for it?there is no justification for terrorist acts. Yes, there will be sacrifices and unintentional killing of innocent people....that's the nature of the beast. But please see the difference. Freedom loving people are not intentionally, with no thought and blind hatred, killing people for just the sake of killing. Our acts will demonstrate character and courage, not evil and cowardice.

When Granddan and I drove out of New York City after being stranded for a few days, I felt guilty leaving that great city that had shown so much poise, calm in the midst of such chaos. I could not understand having a choice to leave and return to our, relatively in these times, safe haven of home. The drizzle as we left matched our moods....despair. It was as if the city was weeping. As we drove across the Verrazano Bridge and crossed out of New York State, "God Bless America" was playing on the radio from the National Memorial Service for the victims in Washington D.C. I reflected and wished to remember our arrival flying in on a sunny day, September 7th, seeming years ago, with the marvelous skyline of the city jutting up majestically.

I wanted to remember our evening before the attack sitting under the bleachers of Yankee Stadium during a rain delay and breaking bread, or in reality peanuts, with a couple of new found friends from Brooklyn. Our friends told us how much Texans and New Yorkers were alike in their boldness, brashness, and independence....yet each state loving being Americans and part of this great United States. Overly exuberant, talking with his hands, our Brooklyn friend told us we were the "salt of the earth" for donating Yankee season tickets to a church in the Bronx. And in jest, calling upon the other "bleacher creatures" to give us a hand....on that dreary evening before the present world ended. Now that giving seems so little.

I want to remember dashing back in the drizzle to our hotel in Manhattan after the game was postponed, after the hours long delay, and stopping to gaze at the Twin Towers. My eating crow, remarking, "yes I can see them from here" after I argued with granddan that we couldn't. The next morning, unbelievably, all we saw was smoke from that site.

I want to remember these moments....the strength of the city, Central Park in the days after the attack with its carousel continuing to play, a boy playing baseball with his mom, and the pride I felt when U.S. fighter jets began flying cover over the city. I wanted to stand and cheer with fist pumping, "Go U.S.A!"

Our friend from the Bronx wrote me after I told her that I was so saddened to leave. She said we had to go...our family was in Texas. But to remember that we always had family in New York and that she knew that deep in our Texas hearts we were New Yorkers. How ironic! She was comforting us knowing what sadness and trials lay ahead for her city.

I do feel a kinship with New York, the victims, and all Americans. Driving back across the country, we took in her beauty and strength-- the Appalachians, the Shenadoah Valley, the great Mississippi River, and all the patriotic fervor gripping the land demonstrated by the omnipresent flying flags.

There is definitely a kinship. I know when those great buildings collapsed and vaporized with all those people, it was like a communion of souls taken into my very being. The smoky air was filled with all the victims' spirits...heroes, moms, dads, sons, daughters....regular everyday people. Or more appropriately honored, as ordinary people leading heroic lives. I now feel them in my very heart and soul.

Love to All of You,
Grandmother

            <elementText elementTextId="242269">
<text>Question 1:How did you witness history on September 11th? Share you experience.

I was a professor teaching at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk. I was teaching a group of twenty military officers war planning and we were actually talking at that time about the unconventional threats that we might face if we happened to go overseas. Little did we know that that was happening. Right in the middle of class someone came running through the hallways saying a plane hit the World Trade Center turn on CNN. So we all sat there and watched as the second plane hit, and at that point when the second plane hit we knew it was terrorists and then we started to hear about the events of the Pentagon unfolding and we actually all felt helpless because being in the military we all would have liked to be able to have done something to stop all of this but we could only watch it unfold on TV. So there was a lot of frustration and incredulousness as we watched this.

Question 2:Has your life changed because of September 11,2001? If so, tell us how.

Immediatly following 9-11 instead of being a professer I was secunded to the Joint Forces Command and worked home land security crises action team, so for the next ninety days instead of working my usual teaching job which was Monday-Friday, I had to work seven days a week for twelve hours a day on homeland security planning and issues. So it immediatly affected me like that and most recently in teaching and security procedures and just basically the way we teach our entire approach to war has changed where the Department of Defenses number one priority is now homeland security.

Question 3:What do you think should be remembered about September 11th?

What I think should be remembered about September 11th is that there are people out there who like to bring us down and that even though that we need to engage, well not engage, but we need to understand all of the other people out there. Therefore not necessarily become their friends even though you would like that, but because some of them will just not let that happen but to understand them so we can then understand why they want to attack us, how they want to attack us so we can protect ourselves. So what we need to do is to learn how to protect ourselves.

Question 4:Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag chaned as a result of September 11th?

As a member of the United States Military we most often did have a flag flying, but now we ensure we have one. And my feelings about the flag have always been strong and 9-11 has even strengthened the feelings for the flag. I can remember in high school having strong feelings when they played the Star Spangled Banner before sporting events and I still have those same feelings today. Even more so I believe in the freedom that America stands for because I have been a sponsor of international officers from over 20 countries and have traveled throughout most of the world I've seen that most people do not have the same liberties and potentials for fulfillment that we offer in the United States if they want to take it.

<text>Something would prove to be different today. I woke up shortly after 6:00 a.m., and for whatever strange reason something I was compelled to turn on the television. As part of the late breaking story, there in front of me was a burning tower, I knew it was the World Trade Tower, but I couldn't figure out what had happened. Upon paying closer attention I realized a plane had gone through it, but never did I even imagine that it was a terrorist attack. My first reaction was that it was an accident something had gone wrong with a plane and it had crashed into the tower. Little by little as I listened to the news, I knew it wasn't an accident, and as I was watching the second tower was hit by a plane. The president of our company was on a plane back from Europe. This person, was also the brother of my best friend. In that very moment, personal differences didn't matter anymore, the only thing that mattered was making sure he was ok, and letting my best friend know despite the chaos, his brother was ok.
I called one of my work colleagues and first tried to establish where he was at and account for everyone who might be traveling. It was a feeling of just wanting to make sure that all those I knew that were not close by, were safe. We made some calls and contacted everyone except my friends brother. We discovered within a few hours that his flight was in route and he would be re routed to Canada for landing. For whatever reason once we all knew where he was at- we all felt alot better, but needles to say we just wanted someone to hear his voice and confirm what we felt. I got ready for work and on my drive to work I noticed that there weren't too many cars on the road. When I got to our building since it was a high rise, we were asked to pack up our things and head home where it was safe until further notice. It was a day that I will never forget, such a feeling of helplessness and insecurity in a nation that has represented freedom and security all my life. I knew then and there that this world as I have known it would not be the same for my young son. I felt the fear and state of helplessness for his growing up in fear. All day long, and for the weeks that followed we watched our television sets, we cried for the losses and for what had happened to our country. America the beautiful you lost so many children on 9-11-01, I will never forget. God Bless our nation.</text>

<text>I woke up at 6:00 A.M. as usual and turned on my television as I always do. Then, I went through my physical therapy routine. After that, I went and got myself a can of beer to drink after washing my face and hands. I put on a robe and prepared to call my cousin, whom I call Aunt Ruby because she is my mother's age, to talk about helping her son work on his case in order to get out of prison. However; before I could get around to actually calling her, "Good Morning America" was interupted to confront me with the images of this particular event to my amazement. I actually thought that it was a hoax for a while. I finally realized that this was a real occurrance as the coverage continued. The great majority of the remainder of the day was spent by me on the telephone trying to contact various relatives in an attempt to determine the fate of my nephew and his family, who live in Washington D. C., and two of my cousins that live in New York and New Jersey. I was relived to find out that all of them were fine later in the evening following finally being able to reach and talk to them or other family members by late that night. At this point, I began to feel sympathy and ire for and with others that were not as fortunate as I.</text>

<text>I had just returned from dropping off my youngest child when I heard the news on the radio. I went home and my husband greeted me at the door with the same news. Planes are crashing into the World Trade Center Buildings. I felt so ill. I remember my thoughts were going around in my head so quickly. Why kept popping up in my head. Why would someone do this? Why now? Why us? What did we do?

I sat in front of the Television holding hands with my husband crying in horror of the events that unfolded that morning. Then the announcer says we have a report that the Pentagon has been hit. Another says one crashed in Pennsylvania. What is going on? Is this the end? Are we safe? What do I do?

I told my husband I have to get the kids. He told me that they are safer where they are. All I can think is my babies are without their mother. I need to get my babies. They cannot be alone. What if something happens to us? We are so close to Dulles. What if a plane hits us? Our children will be left without parents. I have to go get my children Now!

I reached the High School around 10:30a.m. the halls are filled with crying children some are hugging others trying to be strong. I found it very hard to control my own feelings while trying to locate my daughter. My neighbors kids would ask me to take them with me but I could not. The school regulations forbid me to take them. I felt so overwhelmed, panicked, confused, scared. I reach the office and they give me my daughters room number and allow me to get her myself. I reach the room to find her and her friends crying. She saw me and hugged me and said why is this happening to us. Her friends had parents working at the Pentagon which is only 15 minutes from us. They are afraid they are dead or injured. I assured them that they would hear from their parents soon and hugged her as well.
We came out of the school to find the parking and surrounding areas of the school filled with other parents trying to find their children. Everyone crying and horrified it was total chaos.

We located the car and made our way to the Elementary school to get my youngest child. The Elementary School was very quite. Everyone was hush hush. They didn't want the children to know what was going on. They didn't want them upset. I requested them to call my son to the office for early dismissal. I was talking to another mother when someone from the office asked that we not speak of the disaster in the hallways. I got my son and went to the car where I proceeded to explain to him what was going on. All he could say was why are you taking me home.

Once we got back home, I felt somewhat comforted that my children were now with me. We all sat together arm in arm as we watched the aftermath unfold. The fires burn. The people running. The buildings falling. Over and Over and Over like the rerun of a bad movie.

My kids asked me why I brought them home. I explained that if something were to happen, that I wanted us to be together, so nobody would be alone asking why did this happen to them.

It is a year later and I am still asking why. How could a people who Love their God so much do something so devastating in his name? I don't think any God would condone such bahavior. Kind of makes you wonder if it isn't satan in disguise.

I hope and pray that one day the world in its entirety will finally find peace.

<text>We were on vacation and had drove to the west coast and thought that we'd stop in Las Vegas since we had never been there before. Actually we were on our way home to Iowa. My husband had gotton up and turned on the t.v. just as the first plane had hit the first tower. He woke me up to tell me to watch then the second plane had come in and hit the second tower. We couldn't believe our eyes. He turned to me and said what did I want to do , and my response was go home now !!!! As he went to check us out I sat on the end of the bed watching the horror and not believing what my eyes were seeing. A young gentleman came walking pass the door to our room and I could tell by the look on his face what he was thinking because it was the same as what was going on in my mind. Our eyes met and no words had to be spoken , he just kept shaking his head and walking back and forth infront of the hotel room door as if he was lost and didn't know what to do now .
We didn't exchange any words till we were packing the car to leave and he came out of I guess his room and told us to be careful and wished us luck getting home. He was stuck in Vegas because he had flown in and of couse by then no flights were leaving. To this day I think about who he was and can still see the look on his face.
The drive home was listening to any radio staion that we could get that would tell us what was going on . And then noticing no planes in the sky made for a errie feeling. Our vacation was cut short by a week last year because of the event but going home was all that was on our minds and that we couldn't get there fast enough.I'd give anything for what had happened not to have but it did make me realize that the saying "theres no place like home" is so true.Driving interstate 80 we were passed quite afew times by vehicles packed full of fireman gear and didn't have to ask each other where they were going because we knew fully well where they were heading and by no means were they taking in the sights along the way This country of ours is the most beautiful place in the world and it is 95% full of wonderful loving and caring people and heaven help the other 5% that wants to distroy us.</text>

<text>Being only 16, it was a hard thing to accept that the World Trade Centers were being attacked by terrorists. It was a horrifying thing to watch on television and it must have been infinitley worse to watch firsthand, in person. This is my story.

I was a junior in high school, one of the first days of school. It takes a little getting used to after the long vacation, so stress runs high among the faculty and students while adjusting to the school season. I was walking down a flight of stairs, already late for geometry, with a friend. A teacher ran down the steps and stopped in his tracks and looked at us both.

"Did you hear a plane crashed into the Pentagon and World Trade Centers?" He said.

Of course, I didn't believe him at first. Neither did my buddy.

How wrong we were.

Walking to geometry, my buddy and I were discussing if one of the teachers had already lost his mind. It turns out he didn't.

We set foot in the room and our teacher was staring at the TV in the classroom. On it was a live video feed, showing the pentagon and World Trade Center burning.

The moment I saw that, my stomach sank. I couldn't believe I was watching the Pentagon burn. To me, it was like, "Oh come ON! The PENTAGON? No way!" But there it was, on TV. The pure horrifying scene of watching the Pentagon, one of the most highly coveted government buildings, was like a brick through glass. Every conception about safety came crashing down.

The next class was US History. How ironic.

Of course by now we were all accepting the fact that we were attacked by terrorists and starting to come out of that state of shock that had hit the entire school once the news broke. But for some reason, it wasn't worth the effort trying to ignore the fact that only a few hundred miles away people were burning alive, jumping out of buildings, and most of them didn't know why they were even put in that situtation, anyhow.

It's not every day that you have to make a choice like the people in the World Trade Centers did.

"Do I jump?"
"Do I try to escape? Is it possible?"

And I cannot help but mention the men and women on the aircraft that were being hijacked.

"Do I do what they tell me?"
"Do I try to fight?"

It's not every day, too, that one would come to the shocking realization that they will not live another 4 hours.

After the futile attempts to learn anything in history, the TV went back on.

That was a mistake.

We watched for what seemed like eternity, as the towers burned.

Then one of the towers fell.

There was discussion going on prior to the tower falling, but once it started to make it's fall towards earth, the entire school was silent.

You could hear a pin drop, you could hear a mouse, you could hear the persons heartbeat next to you.

It was a deafening kind of silence which makes everyone squirm in their seats for someone to say something. I don't think anything was said for the the remainder of that class.

Next was lunch, I remember this being interesting.

Usually lunch in highschool is filled with mindless drivel about whatever we could possibly fathom.

Not that day.

Lunch, on a normal day, is deafening. Every once in a while, it does quiet down and everyone looks around for the cause of that silence. Of course, the silence is another one of those uncomfortable moments in which the tension just builds and builds until someone says something.

Lunch was just that kind of silence, but 35 minutes instead of only 10 seconds.

Next class, Publications.

The sudents were already starting to go home, the students that drive to school had already left and were probably home by the time publications started. Parents were frantically picking up their kids, just in case there was another attack, so their children could be at home with them.

I remember wondering if there was going to be another attack, maybe an attack on DC. There was a very real chance of that happening. A few brought up the idea of DC getting nuked. At the time, it seemed very realistic that there was going to be another attack, be it Nuclear or chemical or by aircraft again. Being that Washington DC is very close to Baltimore, and the distant, although real possibility of DC being nuked, it was upsetting.

I knew then that if a nuclear weapon was detonated in DC, that Baltimore wouldn't be affected by the blast, but it would be affected by the flash of the detonation and possibly the fallout. The flash of a nuclear detonation can cause ordinary things to combust. On human skin, if directly exposed, it can cause skin to set on fire. On clothed parts, the flash would cause anywhere from first degree burns (for light colored clothing) to third degree burns (dark colored clothing). That didn't sound very nice to me.

To tell you I wasn't scared would be a lie.

When my name came over the P.A. and called me to the office, I took a second to hug my friends and tell them to get home okay.

At home, it was much like school.

That dreaded silence again.

Dinner that day was silent. I don't think anyone in my family said 5 words the entire day.

I didn't sleep that night. I think quite a few people didn't sleep that night.

It's now August 27th. I remember September 11th like it was yesterday. I will always remember what happened.

I can only wish that my kids won't have to have such a memory like this.</text>

<text>I was like many other Americans, at my job. One lady who works in the same place, told me that the world trade center, and the pentagon were attacked. I knew the World Trade Center had been attacked before, but I could not believe it was possbile for anyone to attack the Pentagon. I work in a retail store, and alot of the customers were coming in and telling me, and my co-workers what was going on on the outside. Then my thoughts went to my step-daughter, who with her boyfriend was on vacation in Italy. The people at the hotel were very kind to them, and even furnished them with a television which translated into English. They spent the rest of their vacation trying to make arrangements to get back into the United States. The very freedoms which we all take for granted. At 53 years old I have lost some of the innocence which I still possessed. I no longer can think that this sort of thing does not happen in the United States. I am sure that I am not alone in this. We must never take our way of life, and freedom for granted. </text>

            <elementText elementTextId="241944">
<text>I had just dropped my 11 month old son, Derrick, off at daycare. I got back into my car, and a popular radio show, Mancow's morning madhouse, was on.

They were talking about a terrible accident in which a plane had just hit one of the twin towers. The radio show "crew" was watching the coverage on TV, when they all started screaming "another plane just hit the other tower! Oh, my god!" This radio show is famous for jokes and pranks...I thought "this can't be real!"

I switched to another radio station, and found that it was, indeed, real. I listened as I drove to work, numb with shock, and ran into my building to tell my coworkers. They had all heard about the first plane, but not the second. They were trying to tell me, no, I was wrong, it was just one.

There was a TV in one of the break rooms...some of us went there and found the room as full as it could be, all eyes glued to the TV.

I went back to my desk and called my mother. She, too, was at work in a small electronics store. I said "Hi, are you watching TV?" She said no and I asked her to turn it on. She did, and was silent...I told her what I knew so far. I said "mom, we are under attack." I told her that I wanted to call my husband, so I would let her go. I told her I love her and she said she loves me, too. I then called my husband & left a message on the cell phone. Then, I called my babysitter and asked her to turn on the TV and give my son a huge hug for me, and called my mother-in-law and told her about it. She was still asleep - what a horrible way to wake up. At first she didn't believe what I was telling her.

After making the calls, I went back to the break room & watched the TV in horror. We discussed that it had to be an attack, and how many people were in those buildings. Then, the pentagon got hit, and they said there was another plane that had been hijacked. Fear coursed through me and I felt helpless - what was going to be hit next? How many more were there? I wanted to run but could not move.

I was watching, live, as the first tower crashed to the ground. I felt sick to my stomach...watching thousands of innocent people die right there on the screen.

We then heard that the 4th plane had crashed in a field in PA - relief at the news, but the fear that there could be more was still there.

I spent most of the day watching TV, talking on the phone to loved ones, or checking internet news. I e-mailed friends who live in NYC to see if they were ok. I left work early, and went straight to pick up my son. I don't think I let go of him the rest of the night, and we watched the news all evening. It was overwhelming.

I wanted, like most, to do something to help. I felt helpless, dreadful sorrow. I was afraid for my family's future, our countries future...I had just witnessed what I still believe to be the beginning of World War III.

<text>We were getting ready to go to Church for a funeral...

I was walking downstairs and my husband was turning on the TV and I thought "we didn't have time".
Well, that's when I saw the 2nd plane fly into the 2nd Tower...
I was stunned... Paul told me he had just heard about it on the radio about plane 1...

After watching, we had to leave...my first comment was "See how great the builders were, the building is still standing."

Well we went to the funeral and told everyone in the Choir...
They were stunned and bewildered...we knew of no attack news yet...

After Mass, we went to the cemetery, and heard from one of the people that the towers collapsed...
and then about the Pentagon and the aborted Pennsylvania flight...

We were stunned...shocked...tearful...praying...
We were glued to the TV for more news...

Tearful as we saw people jumping out of the buildings...
Tearful as we saw the towers on fire (over and over again)...

We attended a Mass at 7pm that evening...We pray for America...
We prayed for our President...and Our Nation

We watched America deal with the smoke, debris, and horror on people's faces...

We could have as a nation fallen apart...but we didn't...
We could have continued to be afraid...but we aren't...
We could have given into fear...but we didn't...

It was only after some hours that I realized that my sister was in New York...
I called her and she had left at 8am that morning before the towers were struck...
I called my niece and she had many friends in those buildings...many friends missing...
I told her only prayer will be of comfort to her...find somewhere to worship the Comforter...

<text> SEPTEMBER 11TH , 2001 STARTED OUT AS ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL DAY, EXCEPT THAT IT WAS MY 40TH BIRTHDAY !!! UGHHH . I THOUGHT THAT WAS GOING TO BE TRAUMATIC ... SFTER WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY , 40 IS A PIECE OF CAKE .
I REMEMBER ONE OF MY COWORKERS COMING UP TO ME A LITTLE AFTER 9:00 AM , AND TELLING ME THAT MY BIRTHDAY HAD A SPECIAL SIGNIFICANCE NOW ~~~ THAT A PLANE HAD HIT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER . I LOOKED AT HIM AND JUST KIND OF LAUGHED, TOLD HIM WHAT AN IDIOT HE WAS AND THAT THAT WAS YEARS AGO, AND IT WAS NOT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, BUT THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING (ALSO KIND OF JOKING WITH HIM THAT MAYBE HE WAS MIXED UP WITH THE MOVIE OF KING KONG AND FAYE WRAY ! A LITTLE WHILE LATER , HE COMES UP TO ME AGAIN, AND SAYS NOW A SECOND PLANE HAS JUST HIT THE OTHER TOWER .
WELL, NOW IT HIT ME ... THIS WAS NOT A MISTAKE ON HIS PART , AND THIS WAS NO JOKE . I FELT MY WORLD CRUMBLE AS IF I WAS IN ONE OF THOSE BUILDINGS . YOU SEE, I WAS IN NEW YORK THE NIGHT BEFORE , DELIVERING A YACHT ON THE HUDSON RIVER . I WILL NEVER FORGET THE 10th EITHER AS IT WAS ONE OF THE STRANGEST DAYS WEATHER WISE I WILL EVER SEE. WE ( MY BOYFRIEND AND I ) HAD LEFT NORWALK COVE MARINA WITH A 36 FOOT YACHT, AND THE WEATHER WAS GEORGOUS, BUT VERY HOT AND HUMID . WITHIN MINUTES , THE SKY GREW THAT QUEER GREENISH - ORANGE COLOR THAT YOU ASSOCIATE WITH SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS . THEN ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE , AND IT TURNED QUITE NASTY OUT ON LONG ISLAND SOUND !!! I EVEN SUGGESTED PUTTING OFF THE TRIP FOR THE NEXT DAY , BUT WE STUCK IT OUT AND MADE IT THRU THE SOUND, THE EAST AND THE HARLEM RIVERS . WE TIED THE BOAT UP AT VAN KYLLS MARINA AND HAD TO STAY ON IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS TO AVOID BEING HIT BY LIGHTENING . I WILL NEVER FORGET THOSE THUNDERSTORMS ROLLING OFF THE PALLISADES THAT NIGHT .LOOKING DOWNTOWN AT THE TWINS, IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT ~~~ ALL ILLUMINATED BY THE LIGHTENING BOLTS . I WAS TAKING PICTURES OF THIS, WHEN I SAID TO MYSELF, STOP WASTING FILM . THE PICTURES PROBABLY WON'T COME OUT VERY GOOD ANYWAYS, AND YOU CAN ALWAYS TAKE A BETTER ONE NEXT TIME ~~~ WELL THERE NEVER WAS A NEXT TIME !
THE WEATHER THAT DAY / NIGHT ( THE 10th ) AND THE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED THE NEXT DAY HAVE MADE A BELIEVER OUT OF ME . YOU NEVRE KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN, SO ENJOY EVERY DAY AS IF IT WAS YOUR LAST , BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS IN STORE FOR YOU !!!( BY THE WAY, THOSE PICTURES THAT NIGHT DID NOT COME OUT, BUT I HAVE SEVERAL OTHER VERY GOOD PICTURES OF THE TWIN TOWERS THAT I TOOK FROM THAT BOAT AND SEVERAL OTHERS THAT I CREWED ON OVER THE YEARS )
MAY GOD BLESS ALL THE POOR SOULS THAT PERISHED ON THAT HORRIBLE DAY - MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU EVERY DAY AND ESPECIALLY EVERY BIRTHDAY FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE !!!
YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN !!!</text>

<text>On Septemnber eleventh, I found out about the tragedy on the intercom at school. I didnt know the know how bad the destruction was. I was thinking "Oh a plane crashed in New York". I just went on with the rest of my work. I didnt know they were terrorist attacks. I only thyought that about one hundred people had died.

When I got home from school and saw the news, I was shocked. I saw i video from school of when the first tower fell, and I finally realized how bad things really were. It was like the whole world stopped. All os the sports games were cancelled. Businesses were closed. Everyone stoped what they were doing.

For the next few days, I saw that the number of people that died was steadilly rising. I couldnt beleive how man people had died. I felt lucky because I didn't lose anyone i didnt know.

My life has changed greatly because of September eleventh. I aprriciate my family and friends more now. I dont take anything for ganted. People are much more concientious. Airports have much more security now. People are traveling less and driving instead fo flying. People became afraid, worrying that their would be more attacks. Also my life has changed because I am grateful i am sill alive.

I think that all the innocent people who dies should be remembered because they had their lives unfairly taken away from them. They should be remembered because they were all like us.

I also think that everyone should remember the good that came out of it. All the nation was united, families grew closer and everyone appreciated what they had. This made evryone forget their differences and remember that they are all Americans. </text>

            <elementText elementTextId="241836">
<text> Five years ago, after being born and raised in NJ,I moved with my mother to North Carolina from our old home in Maplewood, NJ (which is just across the river from New York). My dad, however, continued to live in New Jersey (along with most of my relatives) and work in New York City. I flew into Newark Airport once every month to see him. I had just returned from a visit with my dad and our usual trip to the city...
I remember it well. That morning I was drawing sketches in my 10th grade art class at my high school. The principal came on the intercom and announced that a plane had just hit the first world trade center tower. Immediately thoughts of my family ran through my head. I thought of any of my relatives that might have worked in the twin towers. I thought of all those times I had been to the world trade center and how I was in New York City only like a week before. It was unbelievable. Our teacher turned on the T.V. and the images on the screen horrified me. I broke down crying in my classroom. I remembered that two of my cousins worked in the trade center and that my dad was probably getting off of work at that very moment. I was terrified because I did not know what was going on. I was scared of the thought of not knowing their fate. The possibilty of them being in those buildings frightened me. I ran out of the classroom shaking and crying and trying to understand how this could happen.
When I returned to the room, all my classmates were staring at me. They could not understand why I was so emotional about this. They did not know what was going through my head. When I would try to explain, I would start sobbing so much that my words were not easily understood. After I calmed down a bit, I asked my teacher if I could go to the office to contact someone, anyone who could put my fears to rest. But, she would not let me. She said that there would probably be a lot of students down there trying to contact their parents. This upset me so much. I told her I was going to the bathroom but instead I escaped to the main office. On my way, a counselor stopped me and ask if I was alright. I hesitated and did not know what exactly to say. I thought to myself, "no! I am not okay...I am terrified! Half, if not all, of my family lives in New Jersey and works in NYC! I do not even know where they are!" Instead of expressing these feelings, I simply answered yes and she then took me to the guidance office anyway. There a counselor took me outside to use her cell phone to call my dad. All the lines directed to New Jersey were busy. I could not get in touch with anyone.
The rest of the school day I tried to get my mind off of it. Friends tried to comfort me but I still felt upset. When I got home after school that day, I called my dad. I was relieved to find him at home. He had been asleep in his house in New Jersey all along. He was let off early from his night shift at the paper he worked at. He did not even know of the events until a few minutes before I had called him.
A few minutes later, I realized that my mom was in China and that she probably would not be able to call home or even get home for a long time. I then called my grandparents and they told me that everyone from my dad's side of the family was accounted for. Afterwards I talked with my other Grandma. She informed me that one of my cousins who worked in the trade center was in a meeting in another building and she was not in her office at all that day. She also told me that my other cousin was fine and he had gotten out of the trade center alright. It was hard to hear her say that she had never experienced, in all of her 80 years on this earth, anything like this before. She did not know how anybody could do anything of this magnitude. I then learned, from my step-dad, that my mom would be stuck in China for at least another week. I knew she would be apprehensive about flying home and I was worried about her getting on a plane. The rest of the day was as morbid as can be. I watched these intense events play out on the T.V. screen. I felt so depressed that I refused to do anything all night.
Only being 15 years old at the time,it was, and still is, hard to comprehend. The days following the attacks, I did everything that a person of my age could do to help out. A few months later, I visited the site. It was horrible and made me want to throw up. But I did not. I sucked it up and did what I had to do. The pain was still there and very real.
I will never forget that fateful day. I will never forget the emotions I felt. I never want to have to experience those feelings every again. The stories that I have heard from everyone have really affected me. My dad told me stories of friends who had talked to the people on the phone when the buildings were getting hit. The things that these people saw were real and unbelievable to hear about. Their reflections still bring tears to my eyes.
I hope that people will take my story and use it to see what the day was like for a teenager. I might have not been there but my heart was there and I was deeply affected by the events. And I thank God that everyone in my family was save from harm that day. I feel for those who were not so lucky.

            <elementText elementTextId="241812">
<text>I was a seventeen year old second semester college student on September 11th. Life was great for me - I was passing my classes, living in the dorms 40 something miles away from my parents and had the best time just hanging with my friends.
I woke up that morning wanting to just pull the covers back over my head and pretend like that sun had not even come up yet. (I'm not a morning person-can you tell?) That had become my morning ritual - but like always - class awaited.
I remember walking down the hall of the dorm and stopping at my dorm mothers door to tell her to have a great day. She was watching some news channel and it showed one of the twin towers on fire. My dorm mother said that a plane had flown into it, I was in shock. That's when we saw the second plane fly into the second tower..I screamed and my dorm mother did to. More girls had come out of their rooms and ran down the hall to see what was going on. Why we were screaming and why I had tears rolling down my cheeks. When the news reporters said the attacks were terrorist related, my dorm mom who is a very christian woman and prayed with me every night, said some things I never in my life thought I would hear from her. I was in shock; at her attitude but more at what had happened. I walked across campus confused. I couldn't understand - why would anyone do something so hateful. All of those people, the families and friends. Time stood still or flew by - it just didn't seem to matter right then. I felt helpless. I wanted to be there, to help somehow. I just didn't know how. What I really wanted was for someone to wake me up-to tell me it was only a nightmare.
When I got to class, my always on time professor was not on time. He walked into class looking as though he had walked through hell to get there. He sat down on the stool behind his podium and told us and this I will never forget..."You probably all know what is going on. A very close friend of mine works in the WTC on the top floors. The building that he works in just collapsed and no one has heard from him. I don't want to be here today so class is dismissed." He stood up and walked out. My cell phone started ringing which shook us young adults out of a trance. I answered the phone to hear someone crying on the other end - I was almost in tears but hearing someone else cry pushed me closer to the edge. It was my cousin Jess. I was having a hard time understanding her but I finally got it. She was letting me know that Chase, the cousin that everyone thought was my twin and was my best friend, was supposed to be on the plane that crashed into the WTC and no one had heard from him. What happened next was somewhat hazy - when she told me I felt as if I couldn't breath, I collapsed on the floor, I had no legs, no logical thought. I was screaming 'NO' over and over and crying. I told her she was lying. But I knew it was true.. he had left me a voicemail and told me he was taking a trip and that he would call me when he got back.
Some friends and people that I didn't know helped me get back to my dorm where my dorm sisters took care of me. They sat with me in my dorm room and tried to comfort me while we watched everything on t.v. I cried all day, my cousin, my best friend was gone. Time didn't matter, I didn't care. I thought of all the kids who lost their mommies and daddies, cousins who lost cousins, and siblings whose other siblings won't be coming home for Thanksgiving or Christmas anymore. My professor looked like he had walked through hell and now I was following him walking through the same hell and knowing that we weren't alone didn't help. I cried not just for me and my family, I cried for all the families, friends, and any American dead or alive.
But I was one of the lucky ones. That afternoon, I got a call from my cousin, not just a cousin but Chase.. my twin cousin.. he had switched his flights and didn't get on the plane. I cried then because I was so glad he was still alive. He was crying to... he felt guitly because he felt as if he was supposed to be on that flight, he felt guilty because he was glad he was alive. I felt guilty because I was glad that he was alive.
My dad came and picked me up after I heard from Chase. He told me there was probably going to be a war and said that it wasn't over. He was right, my cousin Bray is in the Navy, and was on one of the first ships to reach Afghanistan. The nightmare wasn't over. I spent that night with my ENTIRE family. Praying and cryng. That day brought us closer.
I still don't understand why that day ever had to happen and I will never say that I'm glad it did. I always told my little sister that something good always happens after something bad. There are so many words to describe what 9-11 was.. a tragedy, stupidity, bad, horrible, sad, traumatizing, ... but it made Americans unite. On that day, a persons color didn't matter, we were all one color. A persons beliefs didn't matter, we all believed the same thing. No one had different thoughts - Americans as a group felt the confusion, the shock, the trauma, and the loss. WE ALL felt the anger, the hate, the need for revenge.
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. I will stand behind our leader, The President. And when is the killing going to end? Peace is to easy and in many ways we feel peace and contentment in our lives - but there will always be the one person in the world who gaines power and feels greed, whose heart will fill with anger and hatred like a jealous child and who will seek to do harm.
But on September 11th, 2001, through the horror and devastating events, the result was a united front, billions of independent hearts and souls becoming one, a nation together fighting for justice.

I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW I'M FREE, AND I WON'T FORGET THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO DIE, AND KEEP THAT RIGHT FOR ME - AND I'LL PROUDLY STAND UP NEXT TO YOU AND DEFEND HER STILL TODAY, CAUSE THERE AIN'T NO DOUBT I LOVE THIS LAND .. GOD BLESS THE USA!!!!!!!!!!!
