Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had the day off work on September 11th. I got up to do housework and turned on the t.v. to keep me company. The image I saw was of a building on fire. I thought "what am I seeing here?". As I watched and gathered more information, I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I sat in stunned disbelief. I couldn't believe what was happening. One of the commentators said there was no doubt after the second plane hit that this must be intentional. As reports that the pentagon had also been hit came in, I began to think that our nation really was under attack. I saw images of the White House being evacuated and then heard another plane was not responding to air traffic controllers. That turned out to be the plane that went down in Pennsylvania.When I saw the towers fall, all I could think was that they had reported that there could be as many as 50,000 or 60,000 people in those towers. It seems shameful to be relieved that less than 4,000 actually lost their lives. But when you think about how many could have perished it really was a blessing that more did not die. My heart aches for all the families who lost a loved one that day. Innocent people died that day in mass. It was so senseless. From people going to work, people flying in planes,firefighters responding to the call, police and ambulance personel...And the families that were left behind to try to pick up the pieces.I have the greatest sense of sadness for them. They have to go on in this world. All of the people who were lost were taken to a much better place to live with God. What a joyous way to end this story, for there is no better place than heaven.This country will never be the same, and I won't ever be the same either. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was in English 9 with Mr. Bellonte it was exactly 10:12 A.M. I was sitting next to the window. Across from me was Kristen Daniels and in front of me while I watched the television screen was Jason Buffington. To be honest I talked for most of the period not even paying attention to what happened mostly because I didn't understand the magnitude to the whole thing. This class is fourth period more then two hours after these tragedies happened. I was just finding out then because I had Band and Gym. My next class was Earth Science with Mr. Goldpenny. During this period we watched CNN. This was the first time I'd thought to my self what really happened that was so important that we are missing are classes to watch this. So I sat there and just watched CNN the whole period and begun to understand the horrifying things that were happening. I had begun to realize that I was witnessing first hand something that in ten years will be in a history book. A little kid will be learning this years later because they were to young to see it on television as I did. They didn't get a chance to see a plane fly at full speed filled with innocent adults and kids thinking that they were going on a business trip or on a vacation to California go straight into the World Trade Center in the middle of New York City. That explosion was extremely horrifying, ten minutes later they showed a plane also heading to California crashing into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Many people were killed in both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Later that morning a plane crashed into the ground in Pittsburgh. After an investigation reporters said that plane was headed toward Washington, a group of passengers on that plane stood up to the terrorists, Instead of killing hundreds or even thousands of people, like the terrorists intended the men and women on the plane took there own lives to help prevent more devastation in America, hundreds of volunteers helped to clean up the remains from the World Trade Center and the pentagon. The estimate number of American dead from the disaster on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the people on the airplanes were about 3,200. If there was one thing I could say to the person that is responsible for these horrible things is "How do you live with yourself?" I was on my way to Mount St. Mary?s College, for a 9:10am Philosophy of Religion Class. Suddenly, as I drove down the crowded 405N freeway, n interruption on the National News Station, was abruptly interrupted with reporters from New York frantically reporting the beginning tragedies of the day as the planes flew into the Twin Towers. All I could think is, ?Wow, our life has just changed in a matter of minutes.? As I arrived at school I immediately called my minister of LACC LAX sector who was expected to leave for New York this morning. Tears, welled in my eyes as I thought of my finance, mom, and family. Now, it is a year later and my life has changed drastically since that tragic day. I have graduated since then, got married, and have a baby on the way. That day was anormal day for me I just did what I always do the sme rutine beforeI head of to school,I took the bus to Lancaster High School I was in 11th grade. I always go to my math teachers class before school starts beacuse hes really cool, when I went to his class I heard this student talking to my teacher asking him if we are going to war. When I heard him say that I didnt know what he was talking about,so the bell rang I just went to class thinking nothing of what that guy just said,Then when I walked in the class room I head everybody talking about what happend, and I was like what are you guys talking about. Then the teacher turned on the tv and I saw on of the towers on fire, and I saw that aplane crashed into it and they showed all these people running, at that time I thought it was just a plane crash I didnt know that it was a terrorist attack, then all of a sudden I saw another plane come on the screen and I saw it was going straight towards the 2nd tower and then it hit the 2nd tower I just sat there in shock, I was speachless, then I found out that 2 other planes where hijacked and I put 2 and 2 toghether and realized that we are under attack by terrorist.The rest of the day wasnt the same,I was like a walking zombie not thinking right,all I could think about is thoses towers in New York and how could somebody be so evil enought to crash airplanes into the twin towers. Then that night they showed it all over the news and I couldnt get it out of my head.whenI saw a speacil tv program on tv about 9-11-01 and I realized how many innocent people died,and how many brave firefighters and policemen died trying to save someone elese life I started to cry. 9-11-01 made me relize that life can end anytime,it made me take life seriously,now im more patriotic, and I working on getting an American flag tattoed on my right arm. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It has been my experience that the life of a university student tends to be anything but regular. Residence hall living only magnifies the effect. Chaotic schedules filled with classes, parties, study breaks, campus clubs, and sports gave me a feel of constant motion. A feel of energy and inertia not easily stolen. The evening of September 10th must have been much like any other, in that I stayed up late and went to sleep exhausted. I wish I could say that I remembered my dreams that night. I don't. I wish I could say that I had some decent recollection of the time leading up to that morning. I don't. The only detail I can recall with any certainty is that I slept, but very poorly. After tossing and turning all night, I must have finally been sound asleep. Strangely, I failed to wake when the phone rang. My roommate did. His mother was frantic, he later told me. He had yet to fully wake, but it was beginning to dawn on him that this day would be very different from any other either of us had ever known. Turning on the TV, talking to his mom, and now attempting to wake me, Mike woke me up full into the nightmare. I awoke to see footage of the second plane being replayed. Numbly, I crawled down from the top of the bunk we shared and sat with Mike in silence. He said goodbye to his mom shortly, knowing others would need the phone lines too. I couldn't begin to describe all the emotions flooding through me when I saw the first tower collapse. Disbelief and a feeling of extreme unreality. Shock and grief at the realization that there were likely to be thousands still inside both towers. Anger at whoever would visit this upon unsuspecting and largely innocent men and women; and children too, I realized. Disgust at the very idea that human beings are capable of such a slaughter. There are few words that even come close to appreciating the full range and intensity of emotion experienced that day. Hundreds of years from now, historians may look upon this day knowing its facts. They will never be able to know it like we do, much as we will never know the intensity and emotion of there time. Numbers and letters can be written down, but they only mean so much. Even memories fade in time. I will never forget the one lasting lesson that I took from that day. The phrase that sums it up is L'Chaim! To Life! In all the bloodshed and horror, in all the hatred and fighting, in all the dark times this world has to offer, the one surest way to honor those who have fallen is to live, and savor life. Tell us your story: My husband and I were members of a group of 40 Duke University and University of North Carolina alumni who has just begun a two week stay at Oxford University's Kellogg College as alumni students on September 10th. We were beginning an intensive study of Roman Britain, complete with field trips to archaeological sites. Because our September 11th was six hours ahead of the day as experienced by our immediate and extended family members in the Washington DC area, my memories include our visit to a reconstructed Iron Age farm, where we had to dip our shoes in a solution placed there in an effort to ensure no 'mad cow' disease instance could occur. Seemed like the most serious situation we could face at the time. My travel journal also has a reference to the Fishbourne Roman Palace and a ploughman's lunch that day, at the Red Lion Inn, in business since 1147. How odd to experience the longevity of civilization on a day when its fragile nature would be so terribly exposed. It was 6:50 p.m. Oxford time when we started down the stairs of our dormitory, heading to the Commons for our evening gathering and dinner. A classmate rushed from the elevator. I remember she still had her wine glass with her. She said, " You don't know - terrorists attacked the World Trade Center with airplanes. The buildings collapsed. Tens of thousands may be dead. And another plane hit the Pentagon and another went down in Pennsylvania; it was probably trying to hit Camp David. We can use the telephone in the dorm hall. This is how you call transAtlantic." That is what I heard and how I heard it. I was an ocean away from my daughter and her sons, from my son and his wife. Somehow I was able to reach my son's home in Alexandria, Virginia; his mother-in-law was there feeding the dog. She was her usual matter-of-fact self, announcing that my son and her daughter were fine, just stuck in their offices. I asked her to call our daughter's home to leave a message because she would be in her classroom dealing with the crisis as a teacher. I felt desperate to connect with my family. What I wrote in my journal when night - not sleep - finally came: "...our world as we knew it is gone. I can't stop shaking inside. ....Circuits all busy so I can't get through. Our e-mail address from home does not work. I want to be at home with my children. I wonder about ....(and then listed the friends and the grown children of friends I knew lived in New York City). I wonder about (my daughter's) Muslim students and how she will manage. I wonder about (our grandsons, aged 13 and 11) being afraid. I wonder about (my colleagues) in the Fairfax County government buildings. "I think of those people trapped in foreign countries at the beginning of World War II. I think I have a tiny sense of what they must have felt, being trapped continents away from their loved ones. The distance......and I can do nothing about it. What if the terror spreads worldwide? What is next? "All flights from Europe are halted - we couldn't get home if we were supposed to - wonder how I can continue this vacation, this study that was to have been a celebration. How can our country continue? What about (my son and daughter-in-law's) businesses? How does (my daughter) help the children? "Absolute total vulnerability, the sense of it. Makes one afraid of waiting around here. American we say in our appearance. Have to get to bus station and to airport and somehow safely across the Atlantic. Wonder if we will travel again? Intimidation - this is what this is about. "Feeling completely alone and so incredibly frustratingly separate from what is now real. Connection is everything and I am not connected". Post Script to the 11th: I walked into Oxford town on the 12th, fearful of the many men on the street who were obviously from the Middle East, and ashamed for being fearful. On the sidewalk, signs, "Pray for America"; stars and stripes appeared in the buses. We stood in the college Commons with the rest of Europe for 3 minutes of silence; on television we watched the Queen sing the Star Spangled Banner in Westminster and heard Big Ben toll. We found sympathy and understanding from those who had endured the blitz, and from their children and their grandchildren. We eventually reached our own children by phone and new e-mail. I would like to submit my story for this collection. I am simply going to cut and paste my recollection. I had typed that entire incident as I remembered it on the night of September 11th, 2001. It was published under the heading 'I am Glad to be Alive'. I was at the World Trade Centre (I work at the World Financial Centre building, across the highway from the WTC) on Tuesday morning. I walked out of the WTC just minutes (probably 8 minutes) after the plane slammed into the first tower. As I got out of the PATH train (which runs through the bowels of the WTC) I could smell something burning. There is a restaurant at the same level and I thought they must have had a minor accident. Sure enough, the fire alarm lights were blinking. People usually ignore these lights as these are a frequent occurrence. Of course, people at the restaurant were ignoring the alarm. I took the escalator that takes me to street level. As we approached that level, I suddenly saw people on the escalator above me running away; there was a great deal of commotion and shouting. I thought it must be a hostage situation and dashed toward the exit I usually take. I saw a man being supported by a policeman. It looked like he was bleeding. I assumed he had been shot and took off like a mad man. I slowed down when I realised that all the shops around me were closed -- and the scene outside the glass door some 50 feet before me was a little murky. There appeared to be some smoke outside. I wasn't sure what was happening. I walked to the exit and stepped out. It looked like a scene from a war movie. The street looked like a war zone. I immediately drew parallels to Beirut. Then another thing struck me -- the smell of burning had not gone away at all! How could a restaurant fire deep down smell all the way up here? I wondered. Then I saw the debris all around me -- some of it was still burning. I chanced to look up -- then the horror of it dawned on me. The WTC was burning! I whipped out my cell phone and tried to call my wife. No signal. Obviously everyone around me was using up the cell sites -- not enough network bandwidth to get my call through. Usually I turn right and go to my office. But the way towards my office appeared to be impassable. There was just too much debris there. So I crossed the road in front of me and then turned right to my office. Still no go. There was a police officer blocking my path. I stopped. But several others pushed through. He told me the only way was to go one block and then try to turn right. I did just that. That road had debris. I was pushing along when I saw -- right in front of me -- a huge hunk of what appeared to be freshly hewn beef sitting on the windshield of a car. I was shocked! What kind of person would store freshly cut meat -- even temporarily when taking it out of a truck and putting it into cold storage -- on the hood of a car? Just then a couple of people put a sheet of white cloth on that. Then I heard some women screaming and pointing to something below. I looked down, and a scant six inches from my foot I saw a foot. I managed to cross the highway that separates my office from the WTC. I struggled up a small embankment and watched as people poured out of my office building. I still did not know that a plane had crashed into the WTC. Then I heard someone say so. I just did not believe him. I thought to myself, this is a small fire -- these people should be able to contain it quite easily. Why would my building be in danger? I walked up to the security staff at my building and asked them if they were planning to evacuate the building. They said 'Not yet, but it could be any moment.' Decision time. Should I go up or go home? I decided foolhardily to go up. Since I work on the sixth floor -- any emergency exit would not be quite as painful as, say, an exit from the 38th floor (which is where I used to work). I pressed on up, took the first elevator. Just as I got off the elevator, I saw a couple of people rushing out of an adjacent office, saying they had just seen a second plane hitting 'our' building. Oh no! All I wanted to do at that time was call my wife and tell her I was coming home. I opened my office -- which I share with three others -- dialed home, only to find that I could not get through. I dialled again. In the meantime I heard the people on my floor rushing to the emergency door. I managed to get through to my wife and told her the WTC was burning, that there had been another plane crash and that I was trying to return home. Then I left. I was the last person on my floor to leave. As I wended my way down the stairs I was struck by how calm people were. This New York resilience is something I saw time and time again today. We left the building and I got out -- now I realised the second plane had slammed into the other WTC tower. Someone standing by said to me he had seen the plane coming from near the Statue of Liberty and slamming into the tower. I kept turning back to see what was happening. I saw at least three or four people jumping from what must have been the 40th or 50th floor of the WTC tower. They were flying out only to slam into concrete -- which I fortunately did not witness. They were obviously jumping from the fire and willing to take a chance with the jump. I was horrified. I looked at the pavement below me and saw many, many empty high heeled shoes. Did they come from the explosion? Not possible because they were all in pairs and undamaged. Then I got it -- this must have been people watching while the second plane crashed into the building. By now I was numb. It was almost 9:15 am. Or 9.20 am. I wasn't looking at my watch. I saw a few people with digital cameras taking videos and pictures of the building going up in flames. I kept walking until I reached a subway station I knew existed. I got into the subway numb with shock and escaped from the area. I got off the subway at 14th street and 4th Avenue and trudged all the way up to 33rd street and 8th Avenue. A mighty long walk, considering that each street takes about a minute at a brisk pace and each Avenue takes about 4 minutes. I reached Penn station at around 10 am. I got into what would be the exit train for me, the 10:43 am going home. Unfortunately they evacuated Penn station so I had to wait outside for about four hours before ultimately reaching home by the same train around 3:30 pm. I am glad to be alive. I hope and pray the thousands of souls that died there today go to heaven in peace. It was never their fault. It never is. When my teacer today in gov't put the TV on and we watched for the whole class period. It was so sad and so moving. I wanted to cry so bad for the families that lot a love one or a friend. Last year, you rarely seen people talk about their loved ones, but today there were so any specials on TV about people talking about losing their husbands, dads, sons, and friends. I can't amage what they must feel like. They have got to be so strong! My heart cries every single time I see footage abouttheplanes going into the Twin Towers. My heart goes out to every American! El dia estaba clarisimo cosa que el humo que ya salia de la primera torre relucia contra el azul del cielo. Pense, como tantos en ese momento, que se habia estrellado una avioneta contra el edificio. Honestamente, y esto quizas tenga que ver con lo mucho que requiere causar una impresion en un neoyorquino, no pense ni en el piloto ni en la perdida de otras vidas. Solo me parecia como otro pequeno capitulo en la historia de una gran ciudad. Cuando llegue a mi oficina tenia un recado de mi esposa que la llamara de inmediato. Esa conversacion, la cual duro apenas unos minutos, hizo que pensara de nuevo en la pluma de humo que habia visto unos minutos antes. Atacaban el pais. We were listening on the radio something about a plane crashing, we thought it was just a joke. I arrive at school and i come in my classroom and my class is watching the television with their mouths open. I then watched and realize what had happened. While we were watching another plane crashes in to the second tower. Everybody was astounded. What could of happened? An accidental plane crash? All I know is that 9/11 has changed my outlook on the world. Before I begin, I want to give my deepest sympathy to those who were lost that day and their families. I also want to thank the heroes, and that could be anyone. I was in school when my computer teacher walked by my classroom and told my reading teacher that the World Trade Center had been bombed. At that point I had no idea what tthe WTC was, but in no time I would find out. All through the day we watched the news. The problems just seemed to get bigger. And when you sit in a classroom and know you can't do anything to help, it sends a terrible feeling through me. Our school had special councelors come in and talk to students who needed it. Thats how it was all week, but everything went back to normal the next. Then we went to NYC to see a Broadway play. While there I got to see the WTC memorial site. I was so nervous every single time i heard a plane, and I was so scared something would happen, but I returned home safely but very saddened by the memorials. Now approaching the 1 year anniversary, my school is having a red, white and blue day, and we are having a tree planting ceremony. This year we were suppost to go to the WTC as a feild trip, but that is obviously impossible. We will still go, but just as tourists. To end this all I have to say is that this attack will live forever in history, just as Pearl Harbor did. I will always remember the day I felt like the world was ending, and when I got to see all those "missing" posters at the WTC site along with the blown out subway. It will live forever inside me. My heart broke into millions of pieces as I arrive to work and saw the tears in people eyes as they watch the event on TV. I stood along side of one of my co-worker and we hug and cried together for the lost of the people on that day. That day has affect my life a lot. I was one of the people who lost her job shortly after that happen. I lost my home because I could no longer keep up the payments without a job, I lost my car. My 4year old son and I was close to being homeless. I have no help and no money.I have found a new job and have a use car to get back and forward to work, but I am $8000.00 in the hole from bills and have no way to get out. [Subsequent Events] The local Junior HIgh School unraveled hatred youth upon youth a few days later, as my youngest came home saying that certain groups were claiming their relatives are responsible for the deaths of those at the WORLD TRADE CENTER. Other kids were upset,that how can these groups of kids be allowed to be at the local school when such hideous crimes of the World Trade Center, is having a unisex of conundrum follies where teen boys are fighting outside,inside,on the parking lots, and on streets, that once was everyone shared in harmony only a few days before. Everyone is so out of the ordinary, but was it true that there are those in our own country that would be related,or elated while so many others suffered? No appeasement wore on at the local Junior High School, and the different groups at the Junior High School emerged like soldiers in the battlefields separate and conquer to battle a battle so new,yet paralleled its life in a newness felt by everyone sharing its own breaths. Those whom wore their turbans, were being given specific attention, while the American youth were not shown any conditions new or absolved by the ignorance lashed out by those that wished harm onto the innocent, that youth can't become entangled at this age-now can they? My teen son said 'Mom,you just don't know.' He refused to talk about it later. Fights and violence of all levels became the norm, and the differences of all nationalities of youth at the school earmarked the future of California growing like new gardens in a field where the sun brings out the best for a garden to grow. The two parallel worlds of Democracy and the World away of the Mideast landed on our own doorsteps for the different education, the different rules each follows, and the different ideals of life and human understanding that are echoing on the minds of the children,and the future of American minds nationwide. Why? The 50 year reigns of previous torment our own fathers brought to a mutual agreement is now burning bright on the American forefront even these 5 years later. Why? Another generation awaits for its own leaders,parents, and the government that says it has the highest technology to protect the innocent, where our own teens ask how can this happen? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work in Newark, NJ and work on the 8th floor of our building, with a perfect view of the city. That morning was so clear, the sky was just an amazing blue and there was no haze which you can normally see hanging over the city. Everyone who works in this city had a bird?s eye view that day. I came to work at about 7:30 in the morning, and the guy who sits next to me, Eddie, told me a short time later that there was a bad fire in one of the towers, I said "are you kidding me?" and he said "no, go look out the window". Well, needless to say when I walked to the window the first words out of my mouth were "holy s**t, you're not kidding!" For some unknown reason I went to out equipment closet and got out the digital camera and started to take pictures, something I would never normally do. At first we thought it was just a fire, then we heard on the radio that a plane had crashed into the tower, I remember thinking to myself how could a plane crash into the tower on such a clear day? And then we watched the second plane crash into the second tower, and we all knew someone was trying to do it on purpose. Everyone was stacked up against the window watching it happen, it was horrible to see, it had a surreal quality to it as there was no sound through the thick glass window, it was like watching a silent horror movie. We could see everything. Some people here were crying and a few were close to losing it. Eddie?s brother in law worked at Cantor Fitzgerald, and once he realized that people were trapped above were the planes crashed and couldn?t get out, he started to break down, he basically witnessed the death of his brother in law but didn?t realize it at the time. Then the unthinkable happened, the first tower went down, someone here had turned the radio on to hear what was happening, and when the tower went down the DJ went silent and we could here the horrible sound through the radio while we watched it, people were crying and running around, we just could not believe what had just happened, your mind just could not comprehend it. We all realized then that the second tower might come down, and when it did, everyone started to leave the office for home, it was just too much to take. I tried to get on the train at Penn Station Newark, but right before the train arrived they cancelled all train service for fear of something else happening, everyone was stranded. I happened to walk pass a customer service representative from the railroad and asked him how I could get back home on a bus as they were running, and by chance the next bus leaving was heading down to an area close to my home. What should normally take 10 minutes to go from Penn Station Newark to the NJ Turnpike took over 1-1/2 hours due to the traffic jams. People were actually walking along the highway towards Newark coming from the direction of the city, but to this day I don?t know why or where they were coming from. When the bus finally got out to the Turnpike we were probably no more that a mile or so in a straight line from the city, and the cloud of smoke was still unbelievable, some people on the bus had not seen anything from their offices and didn?t really have a grasp on what happened, but when we got onto the Turnpike and they could see, they were saying ?oh my god, oh my god!? The smoke still seemed to cover the whole city. I went home and turned on the TV, and watched everything happen up close and personal all over again. It is without a doubt the most horrible thing I have ever witnessed. But I went to work the next day, what happened didn?t make me fear, it made me ?white hot? angry, and it will never change the way I live, in Freedom. I usually will read the news around 8:00AM, but I was unusually busy that mornining. The server seemed to take forever, as if the Net was congested. Finally, one lone picture and a brief statement appeared indicating that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I assumed that an accident had occurred. I announced this to my coworkers, two of them from New York. One immediately attemtpted to contact family but all circuits were busy. My wife called from home to ask if I had heard. While we were talking, she said, "oh my God, another plane just hit the second tower. I just saw it." I couldn't believe it. Terrorism didn't register with me. I couldn't understand why two planes had crashed into these towers. Finally I realized this was no accident, something I should have recognized immediately. We all sat in stunned silence, as the whole college seemed to come to a hault. We wached TV monitors all day. When the first tower collapsed I kept repeating: "there is noway that just happened." I was wrong, it had. As slow as I was to come around to reality, I realized that our world had changed, and that we can never think the same way about terrorism again. We must stand strong as Americans and keep the victims of 9/11 in our hearts and minds forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was just finishing a night shift as the charge nurse at the major nursing home in this NE Oregon city of 17,000 people. I was on the ground level in an alert and oriented patient's room working and giving medications and we saw the first plane crash into the side of the WTC and watched the horrible black smoke rise from it. Neither of us could talk because we were so shocked and horrified. I prayed silently for the people in the building and the plane, and then I finally said that was terrible and I hoped every one got out ok. Then I went upstairs to continue working and someone said that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Someone else said "No, it was the WTC." I said "I hate to say this, but maybe it was both." Unfortunately, I was correct. That's the worst thing I've ever been correct about. It's the one time I wish I had been wrong. As I went to my apartment to sleep, Pendleton was all excited about the beginning of the world famous Pendleton Round-Up, and there was lots of traffic as cowboys, entertainers, and rodeo fans entered town. There was a debate on whether the Round-Up shoule be cancelled that year, but it was decided to hold it, because we were going to let the terrorists know that they had not destroyed our sense of independence and that they had a long way to go to win this war, and that we are not easily intimidated and wiiling to give up our freedoms. At the Round-Up, we had a moment of silence for the victims of this horrible attack, several of whom called Oregon home. I prayed at home with my family for those affected and worried about the welfare of my father who was known to travle to the NY area at times. He was okay, so my prayer was answered positively. I offered my nursing services and gave a donation to the Red Cross, but I was not needed at the time, and I have children, so they wanted me to stay with them. I started school to further my education, and wrote an extensive paper on and became educated in biological and chemical weapon attacks but I hope I never have to use this knowledge. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On Tuesday mornings at 9am, we always have a sales meeting. My boss, who was late, usually assembles last minute reports and information for our COO, so I assumed her responsibilities. I asked the COO if he needed anything, he said he had all his papers, but gave me his car keys and asked me to go downstairs to his car and get his cellphone which he'd forgotten to bring in with him. It was about 8:55am, I walked past my car in the parking lot, keeping a watchful eye on someone who had parked next to me and was a little too close when he opened his door. I got to Dick's car, retrieved his phone and was proceeding back to the office when I saw Maureen, our CFO, arriving. I waited for her and when she emerged from the car she was pale, shaking and was on the verge of tears, and the first thing she said to me was "have you heard?". She runs the company with her husband Tom, and my first thought was that something had happened to Tom or their two boys. She then explained to me that a plane had hit the WTC. I was speechless, and torn between thinking it was an unfortunate accident or terrorism. We both made our way to then office in a state of shock - by the time we got to the conference room, the television was on and everyone was aware of what had happened. I work at the front desk and when I got back there, the radio had switched to live news and we heard that two planes had hit. I called my husband, who had taken that week off to build a deck, and he immediately put the tv on. The rest of the day, until we were told we could leave at 2:30, passed in a blur - no work got done, I was speaking with my husband every few minutes, and it just seemed like one thing after another - the WTC, the crash in Pennsylvania, the Pentagon - an overwhelming feeling of what next ? Many times, I was tempted just to pick up my things and go home, all I wanted was to be somewhere safe with the man I love, I kept thinking, maybe they're targeting all places of business, I don't want to die here, I want to be with Michael. I have never felt so many emotions simultaneously - fear, sadness, trepidation, anger, confusion, love - it was very hard maintaining my composure at work. When we were told we could leave at 2:30, the tears came in my car - I probably drove a little over the speed limit, but I just wanted to get home - and when I did, the television was on and I saw for the first time the awful images which up until then I'd only heard on the radio. I still find it incomprehensible that human beings, no matter what they believe is right, or what God they believe in, can be so incredibly evil to other people. That night we just tried to take the day's events in and make some sort of sense of it all, and I was just so grateful to be in my home with my family, unlike so many innocent people gone before their time.
