I refuse to forget, as my parents and grandparents did not forget Pearl Harbor; which was also a terror attack, what has changed our lives so much. I will not hide or be afraid of the future because of some lunatics who do not like freedom and freedom of religion. I have many pictures in my home to remind me of this day. I pray often hoping those who perished are at peace. I still cry when I see the pictures of the towers and Pentagon and knowing the brave people of the last plane to go down. Movies are tough to watch but I feel they are an absolute necessary! We need to remember! The world also needs to remember that it was not only Americans who perished but others from around the world, we all had a part of us pulled into hell that day. Tell us your story: When I heard the news it was second hour, Ms. Johnson's Biology class and I looked up at the television and saw the towers were on fire my first words were "Oh my gosh, What's going on?" At that moment I realized what had happened and looked at Ms. Johnson and she had tears in her eyes and her eyes were really red. I said what's wrong she pointed and said "my sister and her kids were headed for there from here last night and I haven't heard from them. After that, all day we watched the television, I called my dad and asked him if he knew what happen, he was sleeping and told me I was calling a false alarm and hung up the phone then I came home and saw it on television again. From there we went to my grandma's house and she was crying saying "We've been attacked and we're going to war, I'm not ready to die yet." From September 11 on, it seemed like everything went wrong a month and a half later my dad died at the age of 48, then I became homeless. It was just a start of bad events in my life. Tell us your story: As I left my apartment to catch the 8:02 a.m. bus, I looked directly overhead and saw the crescent moon, reminding me of "2001: A Space Odyssey," an image from which I had used in a course lecture I had given the previous afternoon. It looked beautiful, up there in the early-morning blue. As I was looking, several balloons floated past my line of sight. A nice thing! I had to get to the office for a 10:00 a.m. meeting with my new graduate student, so I did not have time to watch CNBC's "Squawk Box" as long as I usually would or to head to Starbucks for a morning coffee. I crossed West Gray to await the bus. It was about 10 minutes to 8. Waiting, I looked up to see a jet on its final approach to Hobby. As I was looking, another jet appeared to enter the approach pattern, curving into it at a distance that struck me as being oddly too close. Watching, the first plane then turned out of the approach and appeared to stay in a direction now heading toward Bush. It was notable in that I had not seen that before in my daily wait for the bus, but it had no significance. It seems foolish to say, but what ran through my mind as I was watching was, 'I bet that's what terrorists would do, fly planes into one another.' It dissipated to simply become one of the number of those stimuli and random thoughts that form distractions while awaiting a bus, along with a helicopter, an older woman runner who was near the bus stop - stretching her legs in advance of running, and the like. I saw my bus turn onto Gray and I got ready to board. The transfer I obtained indicated that my boarding time was 8:02 a.m. I sat in the first transverse seat on the right hand side of the bus. Several women were also on board. We traveled down Woodhead and turned on Fairfield. In several minutes, a dispatcher came onto the driver's intercom and said: "We don't usually do this, but in the interest of history please note that an American Airlines jet was hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center." To say I was numb would be to attribute to me more activity than I felt. A New Yorker working in Texas, I did not know what to think, even whether I should believe it. I just looked out the window, wondering if any part of that message had actually happened had really happened or was just some misunderstanding. I couldn't imagine that the message was a joke or a prank, but I kept thinking it was a misunderstanding or an exaggeration of, say, a small plane, a plane that crashed into the river, a hijacker's threat. I imagined what I had seen in photos of what had happened to the Empire State Building in, what, the 1940s or 50s. However, I also kept thinking about what the implications would be if this were true. If it had been attacked. The number of people killed. What the scene was like. I thought of my precious South Cove bench where I would often sit, back against the fence and the water and the WinterGarden with its wonderful palms and the playful and whimsical figurines in the North Cove park. I thought of the people I knew that worked in the towers. I thought of my friends and how many of them might have family or friends there. I thought of the pictures I had taken of the buildings over the years, their frames contrasted with that of the Woolworth Building being a favorite theme <http://www.divinestra.com/phila_03112002.html>. Like a split-brain patient where no direct communication occurs between left and right cerebral hemispheres, it was as if one side of my brain was envisioning a world where we were under attack and right then and there the 50,000-plus people in the towers were/are endangered and, on the other side, everything remained just the way it had been moments ago, but for the odd misunderstanding of a Texas bus dispatcher. The bus ride continued. Past Montrose. Heading into downtown Houston. I was looking to see whether any sign might be discerned out on the streets of some emergency. There were none. Passing the Enron building and its under-construction clone paired in a fashion modestly akin to the towers on the left and nothing seemed different. No one on the bus had spoken during this time period and were getting off at their stops. Recalling a stock crawler in the El Paso Building that was visible from the street, I made sure that I caught a glance of it to see what I might: it was canned stuff from yesterday, though; not including any current news. The ride proceeded. At a certain point, the dispatcher came back on. Retraction, I hoped. But, he said: "Again, in the interest of U.S. history, another plane has been hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center and another was hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon." And, again, my mind was numb in a dissociation between accepting and not accepting this news as being accurate. As the bus stopped at the Eastwood Transportation Center, I departed saying 'take care' to the driver when he stopped me and said, "Didn't you hear? Planes crashed into the buildings and into the Pentagon." I could only respond with a "Umm-hmmm" and a nod and what must have been a very blank look. Waiting for my connection, I remained numb. It would be 10 or 15 minutes until I knew which scenario was real. Catching the second bus and then exiting it for the short walk to my campus office, however, my numbness thawed and I realized that the news was probably accurate and I thought these remaining minutes might be the last of what I thought was perhaps a world that was no longer the same. I had a 'stop-and-smell-the-roses' moment, taking a deep breath and slowly taking in the greenery surrounding me. At the office, I immediately tried to get online and found everything overloaded and frozen. Not good, I thought. I was eventually able to access Yahoo! and saw "Plane strikes trade center, building aflame," and a photo that showed the smoking hole in the North Tower; the one-inch by half-inch photo looked bad but did not look as bad as I thought it might. By then, however, several students had set up a small black-and-white television used for data-collection purposes. The only channel we could receive with no cable or antenna showed a grainy, static-filled image of lower Manhattan covered in billowing smoke and Peter Jennings speaking of the collapse of one of the towers and, within a couple of minutes, we watched the second tower seemingly melt before our eyes as it collapsed. The numbness I thought I had experienced earlier paled to that which now enveloped me. Tell us your story: Until September 11,2001, my morning routine included turning on The Today Show at 7AM Central Time while I perused the newspaper. On September 11, I had a sinus headache and decided to sleep in a bit before driving my daughter to school at 8:30 rather than our normal 7:30. I didn't turn on The Today Show. My daughter doesn't appreciate my public radio station, to which I normally listen in the car, and with my headache that morning, I was easily persuaded to leave the radio turned off en transit to school. Turning the corner after dropping off my daughter, I flipped on the radio at approximately 8:40 CDT. I then first learned that a 'small plane' had reportedly crashed into a Trade Center Tower. This was quickly corrected to include the second plane hitting the other tower. A couple of minutes later, the reporter announced that it was 'just being announced' that yet another plane had apparently crashed into the Pentagon. Then I learned about the grounding of all flights. America was under attack. Reaching my driveway, I raced into the house and turned on the television just as the South Tower collapsed. In shock, I called my secretary. In just over an hour, our department and all other state agencies were closed and staff sent home. I decided it was better to leave my children at their schools, in a semi-normal routine, and I sat glued to the television in disbelief. I now no longer routinely, but only very rarely, tune in to morning television. I missed the biggest and most horrific national story of my life by sleeping in; what other story could compare? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My Office in the Clouds Lately (10/02/01), I awaken with a dread that I have not yet felt as familiar. My mind refuses to focus on the next small task in my routine that continues my life incrementally. Knowing it is a form of temporary depression and that it will pass with time... has no cure. With what seems like a absurd amount of effort, I brush my teeth, shave, shower and dress for the day. One of the ?tricks? I have learned is not to have too much time to reflect on recent events, -worse yet... -to remember. Otherwise I feel obligated to justify my efforts when I have no such true justification. It may sound like I have lost a loved one in the recent terrorist attacks... but I have not. It sounds to me that I am over-reacting, -am irrationally depressed, and listless... -but I see too many others that so closely resemble the contents of my heart to be exceptional. We ARE all in mourning... for entirely too many reasons I find. My story, as so many stories, began with a humble obscurity. I was raised in the midwest in the small-town and farm environs. Without even knowing it, I became a mid-westerner. With the devout support of my parents to follow my dreams, I dedicated myself to pursuing a degree in the natural sciences... geology as it turned-out. After completing my graduate degree in engineering geology later in Texas, -faced with the prospects of my student loans, I searched for a solid job with career opportunities. The job market was not great in the late-1980s... although the world was rent by many changes. Factor-in that jobs for engineering geologists are ?Few and far between? I had my work cut-out in planning for me and my new bride?s future. I had to get my ?foot in the door? and gain some valuable work experience. After a few tense months of living next to my in-laws without a prospect for employment, I eventually got my first call-back on a resume-mailing. You see, we didn?t have the computer/email network back then... everything was ?connections? or ?mail and pray? with regards to resume applications. I passed my telephone interview and was offered a position as assistant geologist in the geotechnical group of the Infrastructure Group of Ebasco Services, Incorporated, New York, New York. Ebasco was an international firm that branched into the environmental, engineering, and construction industries. It was a GE company that stood for ?Electric Bond And Shares Company -Ebasco?. They were BIG in more than 1 sense of the word. Wow! ...and they wanted me. I was not enthused by the prospect of moving to New York City, -my mid-western biases kicking-in, but as a career starter... -I was hooked. I didn?t have any other options beyond in-law witnessed loan deferments as well. In the course of a single week, I went from driving my 16-year old buick and living in a home that didn?t have central heating ($110/month rent) to being flown out to New York City at no cost to work out of the World Trade Center (WTC, 91st floor) for one of the largest construction companies in the world -sight unseen. Dreamy in the sense of the classic ?American Dream? for sure. The confidence that this experience thrust into my being during this period in my life was astounding. I learned to love areas of life that I had not known even existed -now truly and integrally dedicated to our way of life as an American. I loved to build and work as a valued member of a team of professionals. These areas too, became an essential part of my being without me knowing it. Rather than obscure this tale with the predictable details of a burgeoning career, -just let it be known that I contributed to many successful projects for our company. I helped plan highways, pipelines, tunnels, power plants, bridges, dams... fascinating stuff. I helped complete 2 projects that were world record holders. One project, upon its timely completion, was credited with averting an regional energy crisis ...and all the associated suffering... for the New York City area from the effects of severe winter weather. They kept me busy from 1988 until about 1992. Time would have passed quickly if I weren?t suffering on the domestic front. Living in the metropolitan New York City area on an entry-level salary was rough. It is a very high cost of living area still. The complications from a job with 50% travel also took its toll. So, nearing Christmas in 1991 when my supervisor asked me if I would consider looking for other work... business was declining and I was at the low-end of the totem pole... I gave him my confident team-spirited ?no problem? and found another job within 2 weeks time. Such was my experience level. I was heading back to the mid-west, and hopefully, to a lower cost of living area. We now had a son in our young family. Before my story continues, I find I must add some details from my time in the 2WTC tower (the tower without the antenna). First of all, it was a ludicrous place to find a geologist working out of... I was a field person for crying-out loud! I had, as low person on the totem pole, a spartan partition office (Dilbert would have been proud) which did not have a computer or even electricity necessarily. I borrowed these things when I needed them. I had 10- to 15-minutes worth of elevator rides as a component of my daily commute from Jersey. The car, -to the train, -to the subway (or ferry), -then a hike, -followed by the elevator portion in the Trade Center tower itself. I wasn?t in Kansas any more. In the world of the engineer in which I worked, I thus was forced to meet and cooperate with many people of diverse professional training and experience... administrators, executives, architects, CAD operators, security people, and every sort of engineer. I knew a lot of people even though I knew only a few very well. I valued the confidence and responsibilities they entrusted me with... we were a team. They did not know what geologist did for a living for the most part... I was done with my work by the time most of the engineers got involved. They never saw me doing anything but entering boring logs on the computer. The 2WTC building was impressive. I have yet to experience anything from my jobs that even held a candle to my crappy ?ol partition office on the 91st floor. Whenever I looked out a window on my floor... I felt as though I were flying or floating above this city of skyscrapers. It did not seem possible that man could build this static emotional vehicle. On cloudy days... you were in a cloud. Even on the windy days when the building creaked and moaned... -when the doors wouldn?t shut due to the tower swaying in the strong winds... you winced sure- but then you grinned. The towers had issues that did affect your confidences... but they were so damn impressive... they INSPIRED you still. I never would have thought that two large and loaded planes could have hit them as they did. Many of my former co-workers are alive today due simply to the dedication and yes, love, of the engineers and construction workers who built these renaissance engines. My professional hat is off to these heros. The towers inspired you by a physical mechanism that no personal experience could substitute or simulate. It is cool to visit the towers as a tourist... but it was an ethereal experience to work there and have your own corner in the clouds. My mid-westerner preferences tired even of this magic... I would take my lunch hour... even though I packed my lunches- down on level with the ground. I would ride down, -then hike over to the neighboring winter garden in the World Financial Center complex. I ate many a peanut butter sandwich under palm trees and in sight of yachts. I felt safe. It recharged my confidence, and rested my courage. I frequently imagined many forms of engineering- and terrorist-related catastrophes. We all retain the ability to be just human. It passed the time... addressed and explained many of my emotions, and diverted my attention from the economic hypocrisy I was immersed into there. I lived the jealousy but did not despair in it. Humans can love what they know they cannot have... Americans such as I- ...can even smile. Not every dream must be mine... mine are sufficient. Terrorists note this! My current job, the one I took after 2WTC, is at ground level back here in America?s Heartland. I have found my confidence and courage are rewarded less than they were out east... the opportunities are very much paler in potential. This is the role of maintained inspiration in our lives... to elevate our hearts and souls to reveal capabilities that would otherwise wallow in conservative pities and mundane endeavors. I am still used to the exceptional here... to be immersed in it... to take it for granted. I frustrate very easily at work. The people I work with, even though we all share a much more uniform professional training, do not begin to comprehend this aspect of my being. I tell them tales of my ?first job out of school? and they think that I am making it all up. I am a liar and play games in their eyes I can see. I hear them say and show as much. If I am wrong... then they simply don?t care. I am not sure which is worse actually. I cannot blame them... for their offices are not, and are never likely to be... in the clouds. Our tragic moments are all truly and purely human. Truthfully, they can never truly share in my memories regardless of their empathy. My September 11, 2001 began as every day of mine begins... with a congested commute to my office and its ground-level view of Westchester, Illinois. I was 10 minutes late and, and as the senior person in the office, needed to get working pronto. Setting good examples and all that. E-mail awaited me for the first 40 minutes and was going strong still when a coworker of mine, who listens to a radio as he works, yelled... ?a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York!? The pit of my stomach fell, but I had nothing to reply with... I was thrust that quickly into denial. It cannot be happening as I knew someday that it might. Somehow, I thought that it was all over since the WTC bombing in about 1994. They would not let anything happen like this again. It must be an air traffic control accident I concluded. I brought-up the CNN website and viewed images of the 1WTC tower smoking as it burned. No sooner had I finished reading my first story on the web site than my co-worker yelled out again ?Shit! Another plane just crashed into the other tower!? All I could say was ?that is no accident...? and my vision grayed a little... my sensations in general numbed. I realized later that night that I had gone into a mild shock. Much of America did the same. Much of America had only the outrage of the attack to address. I found suddenly that I had ghosts in my closet... a gaping hole in my heart... and a surreal fog descending upon my life. By 10am, I saw the video showing the 2nd plane collide with 2WTC... slamming into my old floor. People were jumping from the buildings at heights that defied the senses in horror. This sight will haunt me forever. I was watching one of my old nightmares happen before my eyes. My chest heaved and my eyes watered over and burned. My tower collapsed with my spirit just a few minutes later. The next thing I knew... -it was 1:30 in the morning when I sent the email to my office that I would need a half-day to get my thoughts together... to cry a little more... -to salvage my courage to strive towards normality. Again, nobody in my office... my building... my life... could relate well to my torments. A BIG hole was blown into my memories... some of the most inspirational experiences in my life now had no basis in the physical world. I felt this uncontrollable urge to review my past through our old photo albums. I did not know if any of my former co-workers were to be counted among the victims then-. It, by the grace of God, turned-out that none of them were injured. But the scale of the attacks was such that nobody close to us had to be injured to have its effect on us all. America WAS attacked, not them... With the semantics of ?war? and ?crimes? aside, the entire world was transforming before our eyes... our innocence was transforming into a rage-tinged resolve... and frustration. Nothing that can be done will ever make my world right again. The most we can hope for is justice. Never has so much effort been put towards responding in justice to so few incidents. It took me 2 weeks to account for everyone on my floor... the group had been bought-out twice... 1st by Raytheon, -then by the Washington Group. I thank God every few hours for this miracle -the people I remember survived their 91-floor exodus. There is a God I know even better now. My angry guilt eased-off to a large extent. Ironically, one of my old bosses actually WAS in Kansas when I caught up with him, -looking for information via the internet. He pointed out an article relating the experiences of an architect acquaintance of ours who escaped from the 91st floor that fateful day. This article is in The New Yorker magazine (p. 71-74) in their ?Black edition? - look for Katherine?s tale. She was Katie to me then and still. I mourn not for the present nor the past... they are both ours already...-no, I mourn for the future and its prospects. Much of the world thinks the U.S. is somewhat naive to mourn for those we know not when just as many have perished in Iraq, Palestine, Afghanistan, and Israel... in Kashmir and many other places in the world. All I know is that there are a lot fewer offices in the clouds now and all that came with them. Memories alone are but a poor substitute for their magic. Will my son and daughter ever have the opportunity that I had to know this magic? To God, I pray so... May we preserve the America that God has already blest! I was woken up from a phone call from my husband, who told me to turn the news on. I couldnt believe my eyes.I was totally stunned. I couldnt move from in front of the television. I thought to myself this isnt happening. Then a couple more phone calls came, and I knew it was real.All types of things were going threw my head.Thousands of people were killed,and millions of people will forever lose a piece of them because of this day. I called my husband and told him to come home.We were having problems in our marriage and I had to make it right.The way things were going that day I didnt know if I would see tomorrow,and I had to let him know how I really felt that I love him and I really care about him. I told him how I would feel if something ever happened to him. From that day forward our relationship has een on the up side. So for all of you who are reading this when you go home tonight make sure that you tell your family, friends, and anyone dear to you how much you love them, because you dont know what tomorrow brings. Tell us your story: I was still working as an attorney back then, that year as a civil litigation defense counsel for general insurance; going to Court every morning either in Manhattan, The Bronx or Brooklyn. That morning I stopped at the office on the lower West Side to get my file and then hopped aboard the N to get to arguments by 9:15 or so in Brooklyn on Adams Street... the train stopped at Cortland station under the towers as always, shook a little, stopped for a bit, then continued. When I got to Brooklyn and saw the smoke, I thought there might be a fire... when someone in Court said the towers collapsed, I thought we were at war... when I saw the people coming in thousands, covered in white dust, coming over the Brooklyn Bridge, I thought we were at the end of our way of life... but now I know that we were all there to see that our way of life is the best... we are Free, not from death, but from tyranny. I was glad to be alive to help people on to buses going to the hostpial on Atlantic Avenue, glad to be an American, glad to be able to help my fellows... I'm still glad. On my way to the subway station, living in the Jackson-Heights area of Queens, I was thinking how beautiful the weather was, the sky had a wonderful shade of blue, and one could feel that the temperature would climb rather high! I walked to the subway station and at Queensborough Plazza I transferred to the N train for Manhattan, walking down some stairs from the upper platform. Uusally I look out the window, that day I did not, Have I looked, I would have seen the first tower on fire already! But I did not! The N train came fairly soon, I found a seat, and for a reason, unknown to us at the time, the train just did not close the doors and was held at the station. And we waited, and waited, no announcements were made at first, after 25 minutes we were told something about police activity? Nothing unusual in NYC. The N train finally moved, direction Lextington Ave. My regular station being 49th Street, as I came out, a second annoucement is finally made, telling all of us that service, both ways, was supended! And my first tought was, boy, are you lucky! You won't be late for work as you took this train on time! Once in the street, I heard many sirens, thinking that something must have been happening, somewhere! I had in fact taken the last train to Manhattan! Anyway,I leaned about the first and second plane hitting the WTC, in the elevators! The rest is history! After 5 years, the tragedy is very much alive in my mind, for some reason more strongly this year! It has affected many people, changed many lives, including my own. Every time I see these horrible images, I realize that all is still fresh in my mind, the pain I felt and still feel for all the people who lost their life, for all the families who lost their child, father, mother, etc. I have also heard something very recently which baffled me, apparently some believe that the poor people who jumped off the towers were lacking courage? That some families even felt that they had to be rehabilitated? Let ne tell you that I admire ALL of them for the choice that they've made, as this was a VERY courageous choice and act! They chose their way of dying, either burn or suffocate for lack of oxygen, or have God take them in his arms the minute they plunged into the air and until they reached the ground! May these souls rest in peace. I wish that we had been shown more of these images, that I believe were forbidden after the second day, perhaps all of us could have had a better chance to experience fully the impact on us all, inside, to seize better and to face the horror and truth in the face, and perhaps even get better faster! To me the most important is to remember and never forget about all these lives, all the people who directly or indirectly, lost everything! Including the elderlies, the sick people who died from the aftermath of the tragedy, as I have seen many dying afterwards. Most of them seem to have been forgotten too, and yet their death was a direct effect from 09/11. I am still angry, but do not feel hatred for anyone, only pain! May God bless us all! I was a freshmen, and already I was bored with school. Our principal rushed and headed a white sheet of paper to my science back, and rushed back out of the classroom and back down the hall. Mr. Murphy stood there in silence, and then began to tell us that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Centers in New york City, and that another plane had crashed into the Pentagon. At first no one was sure what to make of the news, but as soon as class was over, the hallway was filled with people talking about the World Trade Centers. Kids were crying and worried about their parents who had to make business trips to New York City and to Washington, and not knowing what conditions they were in. All day we talked about the news. I never knew how bad it was until I went home, and found my dad watching the news channels. On every channel, they played the same scenes over and over. The planes flying into the buildings, the towers collasping. I was horrified. "The world is coming to an end." I thought to myself. I have an aunt who used to work at a school right across the street from the Twin Towers, and an uncle who is very invovled with the government, and works at the Pentagon from time to time. Since phone lines were busy in New York City, my family did not know if they were safe. Later, we found out that they both were fine, but still, I cried. I cried thinking of the many people who lost their lives, and for the families that lost there loved ones. I cried for all the pain that America would be going through together. A year later, I now America is still feeling pain. There is a big scar left in NYC to remind us what hate did. But we were brought together by this tragic event, and made stronger. Tell us your story: Shaun Finley Global Studies 5/17/02 Final Project Attack On America On the day of the attack on the World Trade Center, I was in school. It was during my third period class, which was a study hall in Mrs. Skucas. Mr. Olson was the teacher during that period. This study hall was a pretty fun one because Mr. Olson would let us talk and let us throw things at each other. I was sitting next to Ben Dominski and Josh Luizzi when the television was turned on by a teacher that walked in. We watched the smoke bellow out of one of the towers and flames flare out. After about 5 minutes we watched the second plane hit one of the towers. It was a horrid sight. Other teachers walked into the room while we were watching it. Everyone was staring at the television like it was a midget juggling flaming torches. Their jaws dropped as they watch the extreme destruction of the twin towers. After this attack, there was much hatred towards the Arabs and Islamic religion. Many people blamed them for the attacks when it was terrorist groups such as Al Queda. Because of this attack several people started becoming racists against all Arabs. That makes many of the Arabs angry and they become racist against Americans. I felt some hatred towards them but not for a long time after I heard many of their complaints. I was racist against Arabs and Muslims for a while after the attack. There would always be headlines in the newspaper to remind me about September 11 and everything that happened that day. I felt really bad for the families of the people that were killed in the World Trade Center, the hijacked airplanes, and the pentagon. Now that the military is hunting down terrorist and imprisoning them I feel somewhat safer. I couldn?t believe that the government didn?t know about the attack before. They could have prevented it and saved thousands of lives that ended on September 11. I hope that there are no more terrorist attacks in this country. There are warnings out at the moment for more terrorists? attacks but if the government couldn?t stop the first one I doubt they will be able to stop another. My husband and I were so shocked when we realized what had really happened. We have prayed for ALL of the families who lost their loved ones, as we too have experienced what it is like to get that phone call that your child has been killed . Our son was killed in Arizonia riding a motorcycle !! Our hearts go out to these families, as this tragidy brought back so many memories of our son's death. Tell us your story: The tragic events of September 11th, 2001 were of shock and horror to every individual world wide, to anyone who has the capability to show any sort of sympathy or even the slightest bit of emotion. I can only imagine how horrifying it was to stand there, before the once so powerful World Trade Center in New York City. To watch not only as both planes crashed unexpectedly into the Twin Towers but as they devastatingly fell to the ground below, hundreds of precious lives taken in an instant. I am an American citizen, born and raised in neighboring Pennsylvania, yet I say all of this only wondering, literally only imagining. You see I wasn't living in the United States when this devastation was forced upon our Nation. I had been living in South America's country of Peru, as a Youth Ambassador through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. I was there to experience the culture and custom of the country, as well as learn the language and live with a Peruvian family, all of which I have accomplished. When my country's pride was attacked however, I seemed to have lost any knowledge, any experience, that I have gained in my life. I didn't know what to think, what to say, how to act. I was told by one of the English teachers in the private school that I attended while living in Peru, as at that time my Spanish wasn't nearly as fluent as it is today. She had told me that someone had blown up the White House, obviously being misinformed. I though didn't believe it. I told her that I thought it was a lie, that she didn't know what she was talking about. Then we turned on the news. By that time there were reports on many channels, but all of the information was twisted from the truth. I didn't know what had honestly happened until I had returned home to my house in Jesus Maria, Lima and was told by my older host sister. Still I didn't believe it. The next few weeks my real mother had sent me article by article, all the breaking stories. She sent me Newspaper photos taken at Ground Zero. Yet I didn't feel that it was real, like it never happened at all. How could anyone possibly fathom such a disgusting and horrible event, it was to me sickening to think of- even living in Peru. Only now, one year later (September 11, 2002) do I actually realize how real the events of last year were. Its still so hard to believe, yet I know its real. We as a nation have suffered a severe blow to our country, our honor, our integrity and most certainly our pride. It is an everlasting shame that we had to experience such a terrifying event, but it has united us as a nation and most definitely has made us stronger. Many may still be fearful, but I will never once be afraid to stand up and say with pride, "I am an American!" One of my co-workers announced that a plane had hit the WTC. I believed it had been a small plane like a cessna. It wasn't until the 2nd plane hit that I realized we were under attack. We turned the TV on in our conference room and saw replays of the attack and the 1st tower fall. Later I learned that the FAA had grounded all planes but there were still some unaccounted for. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember what a glorious morning it was. Just a beautiful day. As a child a day my mother called a "washed eyeball day". As if you got up and washed your eyeballs. I did my usual routine and got my two sons ready for school. My husband a Limo Driver was home until about 10am. So he helped me ready the children for their day. I left the house at the usual time and delivered both boys to their schools. When driving the youngest to pre school, I first heard that a plane had hit one of the buildings at World Trade Center. Figuring it was a small plane hoping all would be well. I took my son into school and told his teachers what I had heard. I anxiously drove home hoping my husband had not left early for work. He was to drive to New York City today, into the driveway, he met me outside and said the tower had been hit. This was no accident. So I ran into the house and watched the first plane hit the tower from a previous tape. I sat in amazement and realized it was no small plane. The feelings that overcame me, witnessing it second hand was unbelievable. I was in total shock. I have a cousin in the city and she was the first to come to mind. My husband had thoughts of people he had taken to stay at the Marriott at the World Trade Center and the businessmen in the past. I knew my cousin would be fine. She lived and worked far north in Manhattan. I no sooner sat and watched in horror and my thoughts and prayers went to all who were in the buildings. I prayed so hard for everyone to be able to climb down to safety. Not 20 minutes went by and my husband and I saw the second plane hit the other tower. I knew for sure, it was no accident! Whoever was responsible had this planned and it was deliberate. I remember being very sad and very scared. What and where would be next. We choose to live in a very rural area of the state of PA and felt we would be protected from such events should they ever occur. I didn't feel safe at all. Even living where we do. About 1 hour north of Harrisburg, our state capital. After that second plane hit, I said to my husband, you are not going to New York City today. We have a Sattelite TV and our local news is directly from NY City. Not too many minutes had passed and the news broke of the plane that hit the Pentagon. We were then very scared. Then the news of flight 93 in PA. It was horrifying. So many lives lost in a two hour period. All I wanted was to be with my children. However at their ages of 4 & 8 I didn't want to pull from school and scare them. So we let them stay. How as a parent can I explain this when I don't understand it myself. Needless to say, my husband was called off from his job, and put on call. He received several calls thru the day of possible jobs. There were people stranded in Colorado that wanted to come home and couldn't fly. So they called the business for someone to pick them up. They immiediately sent a limo to get them. Fortunately it was not my husband. The last place I wanted him to be was away from us that day. We sat glued to the tv for hours, waiting and hoping. I had said almost immediately after the first plane hit. The building was going to collapse. And they just kept showing more Firemen and help going towards the buildings. Not long after the first building collapsed. It was the closest thing to a war I have ever witnessed. Fortunately being 35 at the time. I have very few memories of Vietnam. It was terrifying, I just sat and cried. I did not move from the couch for over 24 hours, I was numb. My husband cared mostly for the children when they arrived home from school. I officiate field hockey and had a game scheduled for the day. It was called off in the afternoon. Thank God, I don't think I could have done the game. During the day I was trying to think of a reason for the schools to play a game that day. I was rehearsing what I would sayin the pre game captains circle. It just seemed so stupid to play a game today of all days. It wasn't a day for rivals or competing. It was a day to be with my family and for everyone else to be with theirs. As I sat all day I asked my husband how long do you think it will take before we find out we know someone that has been killed today. We figured it would not be long. With his job, he drives to the city at least two days a week. He has taken many business persons in and around the towers and to JFK and Newark. We were waiting with such grief and waiting for the phone to ring at anytime about someone we knew. I am originally from NJ an hour away from the city and have a large family. We were waiting and watching. It didn't take long. The next morning all off to work and school except me, I am a homemaker. The phone rang in the morning around 10am. It was my mother. She called to tell me Bobby Dolan had died at the Pentagon. A person I did not even think of. He was a young man I knew from about the age of 9 or 10. He was a friend of the family. He dated my sister off and on for years while attending the Naval Academy. She sure loved this man. He was so special. I have memories of him Scuba Diving in our lake and fishing with my cousin and getting a lore stuck in my cousins head. Such memories flooded thru me. He was no ordinary young man, and as he grew I knew he would be nothing but wonderful and successful. My other sister is a Captain in the Navy and had, had the most recent contact with Capt. Robert Dolan. He had many tours out to sea and was married and had two children. I know he is sorely missed by so many. I waited until the evening to call my sister that used to date Bobby. When I called she was still not aware of his death. So I told her. She was devistated to say the least. I thought my other sister would have told her and I knew she didn't know by the way she answered the phone. That night she got out all his old letters and sat and read them and grieved. After 12 years in her own marriage she kept the letters. That told me how much Bobby meant to her, and she to him. 9/11 is a day I will never forget for the rest of my life. A day my children will never forget either. They are young but I know it had a huge impact on them. We owe it to all who have died to never forget and to honor all the heroes, regardless if they were fire fighters, police, top execs, or restaurant workers, janitors etc. I know my life has been touched by all the stories of the husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers,cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends that died a death that was so cruel. I pray our nation will go on as it has and not let the terrorists think they have won. I pray for World Peace, now more than ever before. This day has affected every person I know, and don't know. I pray nothing like this ever happens again. In special memory of Captain Robert Dolan, USN. I know you are missed more than anyone can imagine. I pray your family will once heal from this terrible atrocity. I know you are definately one of their angels in heaven, watching over them. God Bless America!!! Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was getting ready for work.Sitting in my living room,I turned on my television just after the first plane had hit. I was not sure what I was looking at. As the news reporters began to say that a plane had hit the tower, the enormity of what was unfolding in front of my eyes became even more clear. Just then a second plane entered my television screen and turned sharply (from the camera angle) and flew straight into the second tower. I was stunned. Now there was no doubt that we (Americans)were under attack. In silent horror, I remained in front of the T.V. watching and waiting, wondering what would be next. I still see all of those people running and screaming in the streets of New York. How awful for them, for everyone. I was deeply affected by the tragedies our country faced that day. The loss of life still makes me cry if I let myself think of it for long. Since that terrible day, I have found renewed strength and courage seem to be the feelings of a lot of Americans. September 11, 2001, will be a day that I, along with millions of others will never forget. I can only pray that nothing like this ever happens again. May God bless America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had to go to school at 8:30 that faithful day. I was sitting in Math class and around 9:55 am when my class is over someone came running down the hall telling us to turn on our TV. My teacher did after a few minutes and we saw what had happened to the 1st tower. Before this day I didn't even know what the towers were but I felt sympathy for those brave people. At 10:05 I was in my next class, on the way to class there was no one in the hallways talking loudly, everyone hurried to their next class. My next class was Arts and Humanities, my teacher came running into the room and she turned on the TV. We were glued to it until that class was over. And for the rest of the day we watched the news in school to see what had happened, at the end of the day a teacher came on the intercome and explained for a final time what had happened. This summer almost a year after the event I went to Somerset Pennslyvania and saw the site. It was very sad. I'd like to say I'm sorry to the families of all the victims and I hope that they have long and fruitful lives.
