He had said that a plane had just hit one of the world trade center towers and that I should turn on the television. I quickly told my coworkers as I hurried to the kitchen to turn on the TV. We were all watching as some of us were calling family and friends when all of a sudden another plane struck the other tower. We were all in shock and were wondering who and why. We were also scared as to what else these murderers were planning to do. I remember someone saying after the second plane hit " we had better get down on our knees and pray". I still remember my 4 year old daughter asking me why this happened as she had tears in her eyes because she understood that those poor people were dying. It was a beautiful day that morning in Western Washington, the Pacific Northwest is a very beautiful part of our great nation. I was on my way to work, and meeting up with my long time friend to complete a flooring job in Seattle. I was listening to the radio(KZOK FM) as I was commuting to work. One of the radio DJ's had mentioned that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center, I was thinking to myself How in the world can someone fly into a stucture of that size! I contiued on and the radio DJ was annoucing that it seems to be more and more serious. I began to drive a little faster and arrived at my friends house a little early. When I got to his house I ran up the driveway and began knocking on the door, yelling Bob wake up!! wake up!! My friend ansered the door and said"What's going on Eddie?" mind you he was still in his underwear.I said "hey I'am sorry i'am early but there is something terrible happening in New York, please could you turn on the t.v." and he said " wow ok " he turned on the tv and we could not even begin to believe our eyes. I emmediatly began to feel sick to my stomach and started to cry. Bob called to his wife to wake up and get in hear. I was so sick to my stomach I almost started to vomit! We watched the news for a while and were getting the kids ready for school and eating some breakfast and drinking some coffee. Suddenly the first tower collapsed and we just looked at eachother and started to pray to God to help those people trapped inside and the brave Fire Fighters that we just saw entering the towers, and also The brave Police Men and Women. There were so many questions going through my mind, that I just could'nt believe it.I cried that whole day and for about 5 days afterwards. I was a mess emotionally and angered at who could commit an atrotious act as this. To this day it is still hard for me to imagine the sad loss of life on thet terrible day, Oh God as I'am writing this I'am fighting tears of total sorrow and pain!! I need to stop for a moment and relax: I'am sorry, I'am a very emotional fellow. I'am so proud of President George Bush, Mayor Gulliani and to all the Doctors, Nurses, and Firefighters and Police Officers, Peremedicts and everyone who helped in rescue attemps along with all the Workers at Ground Zero!! I will wear my Red White and Blue Colors today with great pride and always remember that I live in the Greatest Country In The World!! Sunday at about noon the sewer backed up into my house so I spent a few good hours cleaning the mess up until I had things clean enough to try and snake the pipes and fix the problem after several unsuccessful try's I finally got fed up and called the plumber now Monday morning. who ever I called said they would be there in a few hours so I moved the washer dryer and everything else in the way. but at 2:30 I called again to see what was taking so long. the person on the other end of the phone (who sounded exactly like the person I talked to in the morning) said this isn't a plumbing company. so I call up plumbing company #2 they show up quite promptly (rescue rooter if you care :-) )he snakes out the drain and everything seems cool I pay him $130 he leaves and I start to put the washer and dryer back while reconnecting the washing machine the entire fixture crumbles to dust (or rust) and I get hit with a tiny piece of metal scratching my stomach (not bad and I didn't notice till 5 hours afterwards) and pouring hot water all over me and anything else in the vicinity. I immediately run to the main shut off valve for the house only to find that it is in such disrepair that it won't shut all the way off when pushed to the complete off position it still lets water in the house lightly so after about 40 minutes I get the water shutoff to such a matter that the water is no longer pouring in through the now destroyed copper tubing in the basement. I rush to home depot to buy the parts needed to re-soder the pipes back together and quickly reconstruct the branch of pipes. I get a good working part to now connect to the house where I proceed to try and soder to a piece of pipe that is cut and stable enough for the new pipe to connect to. (back in my mind I forget that you can't soder pipes with any water running through them) so for about 3 hours I try welding the pipes and start to burn a nice hole in the wall (yes I had a fire extinguisher close by I'm stupid not a moron :-) ) eventually I remember that I can't weld pipes that have water in them (at least not with my working knowledge.) so I rush to the main cut off and try to shut it off again only to find that now with any movement the water is either ON or trickling through the system. I get the system running back to nothing and then remember that I am working on the hot water line and try to shut off the water running to the hot water heater. and guess what that too is old and corroded and will just spin and shut nothing off (could be worse this could have crumbled in my hands too) finally I get the water back to a trickle again and put the bucket underneath the dripping broken line and pretty much cutting off all water to the house for all intensive purposes and look on the internet for a fabled home depot that is open 24 hours a day its now Tuesday morning at 1:15 am holy cow there is one listed so I rush over to it on the other side of town taking 30 minutes to get there and find out they recently changed their hours to close at midnight. so disheartened I go back home I wait till 6:00 am to go to the home depot close by my house. I get the second spool of soder and some sand paper and some more pipe since I had demolished a good chunk of my earlier set of parts with my mind numbing sodering water flowing pipes. lovely as the days have been going now home depot has no cash registers working since whoever was in charge of that didn't show up yet eventually the person shows up and I get my stuff out of there. knowing now that I couldn't do welding myself I called up rescue rooter and sat in front of the TV on the news there is a building on fire. and the reporters are saying a plane crashed into the building then right in front of my eyes the second plane comes in and slices right through the top of the other tower I'm instantly wondering if I'm watching a movie then figure out that its actually happening and tell the person at rescue rooter what happened and that I still needed help she said there would be someone over in a few hours I continue to watch the TV finding out about the pentagon along the way taking only a few minutes away to change the bucket I've got filling with water down stairs and rebuilding the pipes that I can take outside away from running water. I see the first building crash to the ground and here the reporters still apparently afraid of making a false early prediction saying that the building has "reportedly fallen" a few minutes later the second building crashes to the ground and all I can think of is there were firefighters in there trying to get people out. I sit stunned in front of the TV waiting for the plumber to arrive at about 10:30 he arrives and we go downstairs to work on the pipes (well him work and me watching and asking what I am sure are stupid questions) and listen to the radio commenting on how pointless this all is. finally the plumber finishes and I write him a check. I call my dad/landlord talk to him about the mess in NYC and Washington. and tell him the unfortunate news that the house needed repairs that I can't afford and got a check from him so that the checks I wrote wouldn't bounce. he says I can pick it up as soon as I can get over there. I clean up the flooded area and put a load of wash in the washing machine and start it up and head over to get the check I suddenly remember that I didn't put the outlet pipe into the storm drain I run immediately home to find the washer had run through its entire cycle and now there was about an inch of water on the floor. I promptly put the outlet pipe into the drain and again vacuum up the water all over the floor now for the third time. I finally finish about 7PM still watching the TV and reports and then start another load of laundry I sit down upstairs for a breather and then at about 10:00 go down to see change a load of laundry just to find another inch of water covering the floor I panic thinking the hose fell out of the drain but then find out that the entire drain is backed up again I do a quick clean up then run to the 24 hour (now 16 hour) home depot and buy a better snake then I originally had. and then rush back until about 12 midnight I continue to snake the drain coming up with nothing. finally at about 2 I quit and wait till morning to call the rescue rooter people again (I can't afford emergency time to be paid and I'm so tired I can't do anything) I sleep for a while tossing every 30 minutes wondering if the water is filling up the basement or how people in NYC are doing. finally 8 o'clock runs around and I call the plumbers again they will show up at about noon so I continue to clean and do other things felling quite dirty since I hadn't run any water in about 2 days now. at noon the guy comes in and snakes out both drains finds out the problem is that roots have invaded the pipes and I should put root killer in drain 2 times a year. he leaves at about 1:30 and I continue to clean up the mess in the basement. finally now at 5:00 Wednesday I sit down to write what happened to me probably just for a mental dump and to thank god I've got my life and while even unemployed things are not even close to as bad as it could be. so now I'm going to go get something to eat take a shower and pray for those still alive in the rubble and for their families and the families of those who have lost others. hope your doing ok. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was about to travel from Tokyo to Nagano to give a speech, when a typhoon interrupted. I had to spend the night of the 11th (middle of the night here in the US) in a hotel near the train station, and the TV had no English speaking news. I awoke very early to catch the first train up to Nagano, and turned on the TV to see if I could understand the weather report. I kept seeing this strange sight - looking like a replay of a bad movie - but still no English. It was only 5 AM in Tokyo (4PM in New York) and I finally figured out that this was real and that disaster of some sort had occurred. For the next two days I was in Nagano, where everyone was very concerned and sorrowful, but I desperately needed to be with other Americans. Finally I went back to Tokyo to await a plane to return to Atlanta, and went to a Hilton. Suddenly I had many other Americans to grieve with, to hang around the two computers to check on airlines, and even to go to the American Embassy. I was lucky to be on the first Delta plane that went from Tokyo to Los Angeles, and of course, everyone cheered when the plane took off - including the crew who had been in Tokyo the entire week too. I never felt so far away as I did during those days, and even though I called my family members twice a day, it was certainly wonderful to be back home. I lay in my bed and watched as the news broke for a major news story. I wasn't as well as I thought I was, so I just laid there and remember saying to myself that alot of people just lost their lives and for what and why is this happening. The next day I was put on life support. I wasn't recovering at all. It took me a few days after being in the hospital for people to tell me that we were in a WAR. My heart just broke in two. I felt helpless, that I was in this stupid hospital and I couldn't help anybody. I didn't leave for 46 days. But as my family let me (trying to help me) watch the news I was amazed how Americans were all pulling together to help one another. It was a time for love and lots of it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a Cat Scan Technologist at Silver Cross Hospital. I was on my way to work when the first plane hit the Towers. I was not sure if it was a joke, because the radio stations have a habit of stretching the truth. When I got to work, I turned on the TV in the waiting room and watched with awe at the events that were unfolding. I had to start scanning patients eventually, so we just kept coming back to the waiting room in between. We had to biopsy a patient's lung. It was very difucult to concentrate when I knew in the other room things were happening. We heard about the Pentagon and that there were 10 planes still missing. At that point I wanted to go home to Kankakee and be with my family. My 3 boys were at school or at the sitter. It's hard working so far from home. That day was especially hard. But we got through it somehow and I went home and sat with my children and watched the horror unfold on TV. We prayed for them to find someone alive. It happened a few times. It was very heart breaking. I was going to surprize my husband with tickets to the Miami Hurricane football game that was that weekend. I had arranged airfare, hotel, and a day off of work for us both. It was my anniversary gift to him. The game was cancelled the day I showed him the tickets. We didn't want to fly anyway. So we ended up going to a Bed & Breakfast in Galena, IL. It was a strange weekend. There were flags flying everywhere. The little towns we went through had flags lining their streets. Flags were flying from grain bins. People had put flags on top of cranes. It was very moving. The town people of Galena lit candles and placed them in paper sacks. They must have put hundreds of them along their river. It was beautiful but sad. We will never forget what happened that day. The pictures are still fresh in our memories. We are very glad that this country pulled together and showed their support. As usual, I am proud to be an American. I always have been, but this was a special time for pride. I poured myself a cup of coffee. I thought to myself, 'What a beautiful day.' As I took a sip of my coffee I opened the front door of my house and looked out. The sun was shining bright, birds were singing and I could hear the voices of children in the distance while they hurried to catch the school bus; yeah, it was a beautiful day. Suddenly I thought, 'I wonder what's on the morning news?' I turned the T.V. on and to my horror something was not right? Tell us your story: I will never forget it...We were sitting in Human Growth and Transformation Class at Church of God Theological Seminary discussing transforming events both personally, and historically. We had just finished listening to a recording of the president at that time declaring war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was sort of an erry feeling to be doing that and then get the news by way of the presidents assistant. About the time Brian walked in and handed a not to Dr. Johns the news began to flood everyone's computers and groans began to be uttered. We ended class abruptly and proceeded to the chapel to pray. We suspended our regular chapel service to reflect on the tragedy. As I said, I will NEVER forget it!!! The first I heard on the attack on America was on my way into work at the University of California San Diego. I have about a 25 mile commute so I listened to the earthshattering news the entire way in. At first I was stunned and in shock. Fear overtook me - I have a brother in Saudi Arabia - would he be safe??? Gradually the fear shock and fear wore off and then anger came into the picture - How could someone murder thousands of innocent people who had done nothing to them??? I found myself very emotional and turning to God in silent prayer several times throughout the day. I watched the news on TV for a long time that night - I can no longer watch the second plane hitting the World Trade Center - that news frontage makes me physically ill. I was and continue to be very, very sad about the whole incidence and the current war. My parayers are now for the entire world - enemies as well as our own people. The famous photo of the 2 angels standing over the weary firefighter still brings tears to my eyes. The courage and love that was displayed that day made me very proud to be an American. Now a great deal of time has passed since the first incidence however I find myself being more empathetic with my loved ones - I always tell my family I loved them before I hang up the telephone and I find I am giving more people the benifit of the doubt. I realize that we are only given TODAY and that we had better make the most of it. The United States of America is the finest country in the world and we must do our very best to preserve that freedom. Lastly, I feel more vulnerable regarding personal safety and financial security however I have always and do more so now just put today in Gad's hands and give thanks for my loved ones. Friends and family, I want to give you a rambling sense of what it's been like here this week. First of all, it was the most gorgeous of mornings. The sky was so blue and clear, the heavens seemed transparent like fine crystal. It was wonderful to breathe the air; there was just a hint of autumn crispness to it, and it made me smile. The world couldn't have ended on a more bautiful day. I now imagine that Armageddon will start off like this. I suppose it's good to be warned - wasn't the start of WWII on an equally gorgeous morning? I head about the attacks when my daughter Alisoun called me up from New York City (She and my son Christopher live in Long Island City, right across the East River from the World Trade Towers.). I was getting ready to go to work a bit late, and hadn't yet turned on the radio or TV. She told me that we had been attacked. I rushed to turn on my tv while talking to her. Alisoun, looking out her window across the East River, told me that she was watching one of the towers collapse before her eyes. I couldn't see that happening on my TV - I guess the angle of the camera was different from her real-life view, and I tried to tell her that she was wrong, that that couldn't be happening. But of course, it was... I was in denial. Even days later, Alisoun tells me that she can smell the stench from the fire when the wind comes from the west. I then heard there was a bombing at the State Department, where (my husband) Bob used to work, which turned out to be a rumor, but I didn't know that then. It frightened me immensely because he works in the Ronald Reagan International Trade Building just three blocks from the White House, and for all I knew that building could have been next to be destroyed, so I called him and yelled at him to come home immediately when I heard what was happening, and for a change, he agreed. With great misgivings, I then went to work (about a mile further away) because I had promised to bring a homeless, psychotic mother and her baby to a residential drug treatment program for mothers. I felt it would have been dishonorable to refuse to go when I was being depended upon. When I got to work, most of my colleagues were drifting out of the building, but my patient and her baby were waiting. It took me two hours to drive the 6 or 7 blocks to the program because all the federal government workers had been released from work and told to go home. The whole city -- not just the federal workers -- seem to be evacuating without any direction whatsoever. The streets of Washington were filled with persons walking, and cars were in total gridlock. It was as if the biggest 4th of July firework show ever had just ended, and the entire city was trying to get home. But it wasn't festive, it was purposeful Pedestrians were flowing over the streets like molasses, and with the same result. It was very difficult trying to make polite conversation with my patient under the best of circumstances, which this certainly wasn't! I wanted to listen to the radio to find out what was happening, but I didn't dare turn it on because I had no idea what dangerous thing sshe might do if she got excited. It was excruciating. After I finally (!) left the mother and baby off, I drove home by the most out-of-the-way route I could devise. It still took forever, and I was so relieved to see my hsuband when I finally got home, I started to cry. He had to put his arms around me to quiet my anxiety. Since then,it's hard to believe that it has only been a week since the hijackings - it seems like an eternity ago. I found a New York Times I hadn't opened from the day before the attacks, and I felt as if I were looking at an artifact from a long-ago civilization - which is, indeed, exactly what it was. Nothing seems the same -- everything seems different, and the relationships between everyone, and the things that seem important now are all different. A small example... The neighborhood we live in has been invaded by yuppies over the years. We are older than they by 30-40 years. I feel strongly about our national flag, and have always put it out for the major national holidays. Usually, ours is the only flag out on the street. (I think they felt it was profoundly uncool to put out a flag.) Well, now there are at least 8 flags flying on the block or hanging in someone's window, and some of the other residential blocks in our neighborhood have even more of them! I couldn't believe what I was seeing when we took a walk the other night. Truly, it is a different neighborhood, city, country, world than it was last week. Another interesting effect is that everyone seems to be on best behavior - they are acting kindly towards each other. Surely this won't last, butit's nice while we have it! The wish to do something to help has been tremendous; lines at blood banks have been up to 4 hours, which is great, because we have customarily had a great deficit in blood. I had just given, so I couldn't give again, but Bob gave, and so did Chris and Alisoun. Some kids raised $600 selling lemonade, and donated the money to the Red Cross. Millions have been raised for the families of the victims. Just tonight the governor of New York said that there would be free tuition, a completely free education at New York universities for children of the victims. That will be a big bill.. There were two meetings for worship at our Friends Meeting on Sunday - one at the usual 11 am time, and one which I organized for that evening at 6:00 pm. There are usually 60-80 people at our 11 am service, and of that number, about a quarter to a third are visitors. Yesterday, more than 450 persons showed up!! Most were not Quakers, or hadn't been to a Friends Meeting in years, or had been students at Quaker schools years ago, and some just wanted to sit in quiet with others. There was NO room for another person at all. Apparently the same thing happened at many churches (although I think that coming to a pacifistic Friends Meeting took a bit more serious consideration). The 600 pm service that I organized was called, in very old Quaker parlance, a Meeting for Sufferings. (That's because in the 1600's, so many Quakers were imprisoned or killed or financially ruined that the fmilies joined together to try to help. Out of that eventually grew the Friends World Service and the American Friends Service Committee.) More than 100 people came - mostly Meeting members. I sat as head of Meeting and explained how such meetings arose. It was quite wonderful - one man rose to read the only verse of the Koran I've heard of - the one about how he who saves one person, it is as if he has saved a universe. There were many wonderful speakers, including a Meeting member who was a former American Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. After meeting was over, many of us went to have dinner at an Afghan restaurant to show our friendliness to a business that was probably hurting a lot. The food was delicious, and the proprietor was grateful. I called up two people I have worked with politically in past years, both Muslims, both African-American, just to touch base and to reach out to an Islamic community here which is probably in shock and fear. The first guy is sophisticated, widely-travelled and very well-spoken. He told me that he had been called by three Jewish friends, and now me, all of us calling to wish him well in these troubled times. He was most apreciative, and we had a wonderful conversation, agreeing that if the root causes of the anti-americanism that is so powerful today is not explored, addressed and eased, any military action would only cause more [ersons to turn to terrorism. The other guy is pretty militant, someone who hasn't been exactly easy to work with, and I'm a pretty tolerant person. Nevertheless, I wanted to reach out to him. After a bit of the usual harangue from him saying that the Black community wasn't going to put out any flags because of being so badly treated, he ended up saying that I was the first one to have called him about the attacks and to find out how he was, and that he appreciated the thoughtful conversation.You could have knocked me over with a feather! (BTW, there are PLENTY of flags flying in the Black community just east of where I live.) On Saturday, my husband and I had to do some shopping, and we got a bit lost and found ourselves on a road that went quite near where the Pentagon had been sliced. Pretty soon we were told by police to turn around. Honestly, we weren't morbid accident gapers1 However, in turning around, we could see how enormous the operation to put out the fire and take away the debris is. Acres of equipment and tents for the collateral efforts. Of course the scale of that pales besides the scale of the tragedy in NYC, and there they have to be extra especially cautious because of the closeness of the Hudson River, which could easily pour in to the WTB site if proper precautions aren't taken. So, what can I say? We are all trembling a bit, and give each other extra good hugs. We don't know, but fear what can happen next -- aftera ll, Bob and I live a mere 8 blocks from the White House! And so like so many others, we are putting on flags and contributing to charities for the victims and their families, and hoping that our government will be thoughtful and want to try to address some of the problems that have mde us so hated. Some of aren't behaving well at all, while others have been angels. Clearly life will not be the same -- before seems so far away . There is a heightened sense of reality, the vividness that comes when times are parlous, or so I've heard. We all flock to TVs to find out what the latest story is, while the New York Times and the Washington Post bring us so much information, that we don't have time to distill it all, but can't help reading it anyway, Many of us have been evacuated from work as a result of bomb scares, and that makes us just more jittery. I hope this is going to be a better world, but giving birth involves much pain and suffering. Whatever happens, I hope to do my part. This has been a long e-mail, but I hope it gives you some taste of what it is like here. It is not Lake Wobegone. That day I started at 8:00a.m. and was driving to work listening to music dreading another day at work, I knew nothing of what was going on in New York. Shortly after being there customers were coming through my checkout and telling me about the horrible things that were happening, I couldn't believe it, and as more employees came into work they also told of what they just seen on T.V. it still seemed so unreal. It was hard to concentrate and do my job I had to keep fighting back the tears. All I wanted to do was to leave and be with my family and watch what was going on. I had to stay and on my breaks I spent the time watching one of the T.V's that our store had for sale. It was still so hard to believe what was going on, I never thought anything like this would ever happen here. As soon as I got home from work I put un the T.V and spent the rest of the night watching everthing that was going on and continued to do so for the rest of the week. My life as I knew it had totally changed this day and I will never feel completely safe ever again. I pray for the people who lost their family and friends and as I sit here writing this one year later it still hits me so hard. The brave men and women who lost their lives that day are now angels above watching over us, they will never be forgotten. I didn't pay too much attention to it, unfortunatly. When I arrived at school I began to learn more about it as the day went on. The TVs were on in the cafeteria all day, in every class we talked about what had just happened. A sense of sadness and also a sense of revenge filled the school that day. Later on I played in a volleyball game. I thought they might reschedule this but they didn't and we played just like it was any old day. Before the game started they had a moment of silence for the events that took place earlier that day. The national anthem seemed to have a much more meaningful feel that day. Even though Utah is nowhere near New York it still felt all too close for comfort. It is warm outside, with a crisp breeze. I am sitting in Springfield VA and trying to keep myself in my seat and not panic at how similiar today is to September 11th. A year ago, tomorrow, I was driving into Old Town Alexandria (right next to Fort Belvoir via the GW Parkway to be exact) when I heard a local radio station announce that the World Trade Center had been struck by a plane. My first thought was oh my god, this is it. Two short footnotes to this story...I was 6 months pregnant and had just lost my father a few months beforehand..fear was prevelant. Ten minutes or so later I show up to work just in time to notice a 2nd plane flying behind the burning 1st tower, and then watch as that plane rammed into the 2nd tower. I immediately sat down and began to cry. What seemed like hours later CNN broadcasts that the Pentagon had just been hit. My office was almost directly across the Potomac River from the Pentagon, we looked out our windows toward that direction and saw a plume of black smoke. My fater-in-law works for the DOD and has an office in the Pentagon, having just lost my father I lost it. I tried to use my cell phone to call my husband, who was in DC also at his training class (he's an electrician apprentice), but I could not reach him. I began crying and having stomach pains. My co-workers sat me down and tried to calm me down because they were afraid I was going to lose my son. I finally reached my husband and he was stuck in traffic...right in front of the capitol building (a plane was missing and suspected to be headed for the capitol building). Convinced I was going to lose 3 more people (my father in law, my husband and our unborn son), I broke down and hid in the bathroom. Finally regaining my composure I went back to my office and waiting to hear newas, I have never been as happy or felt as blessed as I did when I saw my gorgeous husband standing in front of me. He grabbed me and told my boss we were leaving.... We walked out onto the streets of Old Town Alexandria and they were empty. The few people who were out were staring at the large black smoke coming across the river and the fighter planes screaming down the Potomac River. I followed my husband home, it took us 2 hours to get past Fort Belvoir, and once we got on 95, it was a ghost town. I can't remember 95 ever being so empty. We went home first to call his mom and see if she had heard anything from his father...luckily he had been at the CIA that day and was on his way home. Since we lived right outside of Quantico, we packed bags, grabbed our dog and two cats and went down to Fredericksburg to stay with my mom. She had been watching our oldest son that day and didn't know about what was going on (ahh the joys of nickelodeon) until we called her to tell her we were coming and staying there. The next day neither of us went to work, I wondered if I would ever be able to go back there....We did and that night we spent at home listening to the sounds of helicopters and planes overhead, wondering if they were coming from Quantico, or aiming for Quantico. Almost a year ago today and I can still feel the terror and the pain. I cry for everyone who was lost that day and for everyone who was found that day. I have since moved to Fredericksburg and changed job locations to Springfield, which I think might still be too close...I would like to move to the Outer Banks, while right now they're biggest worry is SubTropical Storm Gustav. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, I rolled out of my bunk bed and stumbled to our freshmen dorm floor bathroom. Coming back to our room, my roommate and I talked about the bubble of college. "No one knows what is going on in the world," said my roommate. "We could be going to war today and we would never know it." Little did we know that after this day our world would never be the same. I walked across campus to my class, hurrying a little so I wouldn't be late. As I walked in the door I knew something was wrong. Everyone was gathered around a fuzzy television. Someone turned around and said, "We think something was bombed in New York. Someone in our dorm saw it on their TV as I was leaving." I joined the circle around the news just as the coverage was interupted by a scene I'll always remember--an airplane careening through the second Twin Tower. We all stood in shock, not knowing how to react. Soon classes were cancelled and we were herded to the chapel where we watched the news coverage on the big screen. After an hour of prayer for what was going on, we walked back to our dorms in a daze of confusion. The next few days I wandered around struggling with fear and confusion. Why were we attacked? Would my friends be sent to war? What would happen next? The first time I went home to Chicago after 9/11 I saw the Sears Tower in a new light. I suddenly had a new understanding, a slight glimpse of how the people of New York felt. Their ground had been trampled on, their turf invaded, their people lost. As time progressed I realized that this spoke for the entire heart of America. OUR turf was invaded, OUR ground trampled on, OUR people lost. While the Twin Towers may not have been a familiar landmark in everyone's life, they were an icon of America and the whole of America had been attacked. Now more than a year later, life is different. To an extent every day that passes is an ordinary day. People still go to work; people will still eat their meals. By continuing with our everyday lives we are not allowing terrorism to ruin the lives of our country. Still, life IS different. There is a reflective spirit in the air that ponders the value of lives that have been lost and the course of action that has ensued since 9-11. The event has brought a valuable chance for us to reflect and appreciate those around us. The events that took place on September 11, 2001, still hurt. Our country will never be the same. Still, we can stop and take a moment, remembering to be thankful that we live in a free country, remembering to be thankful for those who work to guard our country and remembering all those who have died for the freedoms we have. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It had been a long night my daughter was only six weeks old at the time. She had finally fell asleep sometime very early that morning, my husband was asleep on the couch in the living room, I had turned on the television in our bedroom and sometime shortly thereafter fell asleep myself. I thought I was dreaming, when I finally got awake I realized I wasn't, the first plane had just hit and there was talk about it being an accident and years ago a plane hitting the Empire State Builing and then something happened that I will never forget the second plane came around and all you could do was watch helplessly. I then went in and woke up my husband and told him what happened we both just sat there in awe.I just kept thinking, how could this be happening to the best damned nation in the world why didn't somebody try to stop it, why? Didn't these people who were behind this know that we will never forget, you don't kill thousands because you don't agree with the way we live or because you are jealous, you just don't do it!!!! As for my six week old daugter she is now over 13 months old and is beautiful, she amazes me everyday and I am thankful for all of our freedoms and that she has a mommy and daddy who love her very much. My heart goes out to the families who lost mommies and daddies, sons and daughters, husbands and wives. God Bless you all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sitting in front of my TV and saw every event as they were happening. I had a broken foot at the time which needless to say hurt, but that day, the pain seemed less for the pain in the peoples faces around the WTC, the Pentagon and the Jet that crashed were horrible. We will never forget that day, my family assembled at my home and we were speachless. Everything got worse at the minutes passed, then as the hours passed, to say opur hearts were breaking all day long is an understatement. GOD bless all who were lost that day, all that lost that day and all of us who feel the loss of that day. My Dad, who passed away on 10-11-01 seemed to be horrified by this event more than anyone in my family. He was a WW11 VET. and this tragedy hurt him deeply, he had seen enough loss in his lifetime, but they were loses for freedom of this country. This was a senseless, greedy and inhuman act upon our freedom. On this Anniversary of 9-11 and in future years on this date, I will pray for those lost and for my Dad, for the look in his eyes when this happened will never be forgotten. I ha taken my wife to a doctor in Oneonta early that morning and as we were leaving the office the news came over the TV in the waiting room that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. I got the rest of the news over the car radio on the hour plus ride home that day. When I heard my wife say, ?Oh my God the one of the Towers fell down?, my reply was, ?No, that can?t be, listen, you must have heard it wrong.? Then with out a TV in front of me I listened and pictured in my mind as they described the death and destruction as the second tower went down. And I can still feel that queasiness that I had in the pit of stomach when I heard that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon and another into a field in Pennsylvania. Now 2 years from that day we go about our daily routines, but that feeling in the pit of our stomachs still surfaces from time to time when we all wonder what?s next? So, say a prayer and put a light in the widow for those who died that day and for those giving their lives at this moment trying to stop that next thing from becoming reality. Tell your family, friends and neighbors that you love them. Then, go on with your life, don?t dwell upon the past, but never, ever forget that 9/11, 2001.
