I had a zero hour last year, so I probably got up very early, grumpy as usual, and sleep-walked through the first few periods of school. After second hour I was scrambling to get some last minute homework done in the library. A teacher was talking to the librarian about a plane hitting the World Trade Center. Huh? I was confused, so I shrugged it off; I grabbed a computer and printed off my homework, then ran to third hour with barely enough time before the tardy bell. My third hour, coincidentally, was U.S. History. My teacher, Mr. Cobb, loves having his students watch his huge screen TV at the front of the room, whether it be the time, movies, or now, the WTC attack video footage. So watch the TV we did, only these were horrific images of the plane crashing into the World Trade Center. Over and over they showed the same scene; a plane crashing into the side of the building, and plumes of smoke billowing out into the air. The news was so shocking to me, that I started crying in class. Mr. Cobb said that if anyone needed to leave and go to the office, it would be okay. Another girl was also sobbing, but much more so than I was. I asked her if she wanted to go to the office with me, even though I didn't like her much, but she declined. My friend Zoe and I ended up leaving the classroom, but we didn't go to the office. Instead, we went around to various teachers' rooms to give them hugs, and also to give hugs to our friends. I think Zoe even gave the principal a hug. We were the Hug Patrol that day, which makes me smile, even though the events of that day were somber. The rest of the day blurred together; there was probably more talk of the terrorist attack, but I don't remember much. I do remember calling my mom during school to tell her about the attacks, and to tell her to watch the TV. She was like, "Ai-yah, okay." We had watched on TV, the first tower go down during third hour; later in the day we watched the second tower follow the same fate. We also heard about the Pentagon being hit, and the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. In my afternoon classes, some of my teachers tried to be productive, which I resented. If something this traumatic was going on in our nation, is a stupid syllabus that important? I didn't care about keeping up on the schedule and stuff like that; I was just thinking about the people in that plane and how scared they must've been. Then I thought about the people in the building, and how confused and unaware they must've been as well. 2001 was the first year I tried out for tennis... We had a tennis match that day but it got cancelled. I wouldn't've remembered that if my friend hadn't reminded me. Apparently it was a home game, but no one would've played very well if we had gone through with it. When I got home, my first thought was to call my boyfriend to see what he thought about all of it. We'd only been together for a week, and then the WTC attack happened. I was so worried, wondering if he had relatives or anything living in New York. It's odd thinking about it now, how we had only known each other for about a week but here I was, already worried about him. Fortunately, we're still together a year later. =) When my dad got home, my mom hounded him with questions. He had found out at work what had happened, and I suppose they discussed about it some. I wasn't really paying attention; one of my sister's close friends lived in New York at the time and I was thinking about him. My sister was a senior at MSU at this time, so she was close to home. Later that week her friend came home to Michigan because he was scared, and they got together to talk. My relatives in Taiwan called because they were worried about us. My mom assured them that we were fine, and again they talked. There was so much talking involved with the WTC attacks, yet I don't remember any of it. Later that week I was online, talking to my friend from New York. I was worried about him because I hadn't talked to him in forever. Coincidentally, he goes to the school that is about a block away from the WTC. I was scared for him, because I hadn't heard from him in a while and I was afraid something had happened to him. Him and his friend were outside when the plane crashed into the tower; he got shrapnel in his arm. Since he's a swimmer, he was out for about a month. When school let out for the day, they walked to his friend's house in Queens. I just remember being so relieved to talk to his friend and finding out he was okay. Now that I think about it, September 11th was the birthday of a girl in my third hour. I felt bad for her; having such an event on her birthday. She kept saying, "Today's my birthday... today's my birthday..." Well, happy birthday Jen, it's September 11th again. I had only been asleep for 3 hours when my fiance woke me up while getting ready for work. He said wake up, the Pentagon and World Trade center have been attacked. I thought he was joking. No way would the Pentagon and World Trade Center be attacked. Our military would have stopped any attack dead in it's tracks I thought. I ran to the television and my worst fears were confirmed. The twin towers had gaping holes as black as night with smoke billowing out. I didn't say a word. I was in complete shock. As I watched the horror it then became worse when I saw the towers collapse on live t.v. After the events unfolded I called my loved ones on the east coast and began donating money to those who needed it more. I prayed for the victims safe return home. I was chatting to some colegues at the company I USED to work for. Id changed my job a few months before and was passing my old office, so I thought Id stop off, say Hi and tell them about my wonderful, unforgetable trip to New York on September 28th. It was my second trip and both had been trips I will never ever forget. The people, the kindness, the fun, the freindliness, what a City. We stayed, on both occasions, in the Millenium Hilton Hotel (opposite the Trade Centres) in Church St, Our room was on the 48th floor and the view from that room every morning and every night of those magnificent towers are something I will remember forever. NY is one of the most amazing places I have ever been to and even after 13 months that those bastards destroyed part of your City, I know that you will rebuild all your lives and your city. I had no idea what was wrong until I looked to the television. At first I thought it was just some terrible accident but when the second plane crashed I was terrified. I am a Gulf War Veteran and I have seen terrible things, but nothing will ever compare to what I was witnessing at that moment. My first instinct was to make contact with every member of my family including my mother in Boston. I was afraid at the thought of War being waged right here in my homeland where my family is, where my son and daughter live. I was not suddenly driven to pick-up the fight against these terrorists, instead I was trying to figure out how to protect my family from the horrors that I was sure were to come. In the following days I struggled to function, I was afraid to even go to work and leave them behind. How could I send my daughter to school? What if something happened? At 8:48 am, I was on a Manhattan-bound N-train as it made the turn towards Queensborough Bridge. As the train turns to the west, the downtown skyline comes into view, The World Trade Center its center point. On this day as we made the turn One World Trade Center burst into flames. There was a general panic as passengers rushed to the get a glimpse while grabbing for radios and cell phones to find out what was happening. Within three minutes, we were underground crossing the East River knowing only that a plane had crashed into the top floors of Tower One and that it was still inside the building. Fixable. By the time I walked onto 42nd Street outside Grand Central Station, the second tower was hit. I was oblivious. I didn?t know that anything more had happened till I reached my Madison Avenue office, where the feelings of distress were thick enough to touch. My voicemail was teeming with grief-stricken messages: ?Mina, Where are you?! Are you ok? Call me as soon as you get this!? The entire staff dialed relentlessly ? trying to get phone lines to find friends and family. I had constant contact with my husband from his office in New Jersey, my parents, grandparents and bothers in Missouri, my in-laws and aunts in Greece. They were all very fearful for me. ?Alone? in Midtown Manhattan ? strategically located between Grand Central Station and Times Square. We sat with radios and televisions blaring as we watched over downtown Manhattan in horror. We listened quietly as the Pentagon was attacked and as Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. We watched and were devastated as Tower Two crumbled to the ground. Words cannot express? My thoughts were of Windows on the World on the 107th floor of One World Trade Center. It was, hands down, my all-time favorite view. My husband and I had spent our first anniversary there. It was always one of my first stops when entertaining visitors. It was the place where my dad and I swing-danced on my little brother?s birthday. Where parents and in-laws shared a meal the first time we had them all in the same place. The Twin Towers symbolized New York City in an amazing way. A city in itself, the World Trade Center always drew me. Any excuse to roam the mall ? or Century 21 across the street, to trip though the book store that took a corner of the first 3 floors, to do happy hour at Windows. Those ?rocket-powered? elevators that went from 1 to 100 in 15 seconds or less! I couldn?t believe that this was happening. While these thoughts went through my head. I listened with the heaviest heart as Tower One fell to the ground taking with it so many lives, and a legacy. I couldn?t ? and can?t believe that the Twin Towers are no longer. I truly believed that nothing could bring them down. We watched from our windows as masses of people streamed quickly, steadily uptown on streets that are normally packed with bumper-to-bumper traffic. Today, these avenues served strictly as pedestrian throughways. The sight was surreal. I questioned whether or not I would make it home ? ever ? and for the first time in my life, I did not know the answer. It was that traumatic. I did not leave the office that day until I knew that everyone had a safe place to go. I was the last to leave. At 5:00 PM I walked out onto Madison Avenue and looked downtown at the cloud of smoke that hovered in the place where the World Trade Center once stood. I turned my back and walked 23 blocks up Fifth Avenue to find a friend to hike across the Queensborough Bridge with. The streets were empty of cars, of people. All of the posh Fifth Avenue boutiques were closed with signs reading ?God Bless America? and flags in the windows. The city was abandoned. One outgoing lane opened on most major bridges after 5:30, but no inbounds were open. My husband could not come home. I went to an outdoor caf? where many sat dazed, confused as military helicopters flew above. It was as if we were in a war zone ? the ones you see on CNN or in Time. This was New York City. September 12th ? The Realization Waking up, the day seemed normal enough. The office was closed. I watched CNN, BBC, MSNBC all day. I could not divert my attention. I watched over and over as the planes crashed into the towers, as the towers crumbled. I relived the horror, frustration and fear. I cried all day. My husband still hadn?t come home. September 13th ? Trying to Get Back to Life Unwilling, unable to deal with another day at home alone, I headed to work in hopes that I wouldn?t be the only one there. I didn?t take the subway, afraid of being underground. I walked. There were crowds forming on Park Avenue, lines of people that extend for blocks. They were waiting to pass through Police and National Guard checkpoints prior to entering their places of business. There were no cars on the streets, only people. I didn?t take the shortcut through Grand Central. This was not a working day. More like a morale day. My department started a fund to collect money and supplies for the rescue workers. Within twenty-minutes we had more than $700 in cash in addition to boxes full of t-shirts, socks, saline solution, flashlights, and anything else you can imagine. Grand Central Station was evacuated after a bomb threat. Crowds of people were speed-walking by below our windows. Our building was evacuated and later reopened ? it would be closed the following day. At the end of the day, we grabbed as many bags as we could carry and hiked over to the Javits Center where donations were being accepted. There were thousands of people spilling onto the West Side Highway, donating supplies, food, blood, money, time and moral support. Off-duty rescue workers were lying on the sidewalks, resting in full gear under a burning sun. The National Guard was everywhere ? military garb, military vehicles. A sight so foreign, so thought provoking, yet strangely empowering. September 14th ? The Thunder My husband made it home late last night. I was so relieved and happy. It felt as though months had passed since I saw him last. Rain was in the forecast but the storm that followed was frightening. The thunder was so loud and unlike any thunder you?ve ever heard. I woke up terrified, believing that buildings were crumbling around me. It rained all day. I can?t remember the weekend. September 17th ? The Week After I was determined to make this week as normal as possible. I found the first ?Wall of Tears? ? with photos of lost loved-ones, messages to victims, burning candles, flowers ? just blocks from home. They are everywhere. On every other street corner I come face to face with the smiling faces of victims of the disaster, ?Missing?. It breaks my heart. Crowds gather to mourn, study photos, read messages, leave flowers, pray. I am one of the lucky ones ? all of my lost were found safe. The smiling faces stay with me. I am amazed by the changes I have seen in New York, in New Yorkers. The city has become much more civil. At the onset of last week even eye contact was semi off-limits. Now strangers stop to ask if you are ok. They touch and hug you. Everyone is sharing his or her story. It helps. I am living in a daze. I still can?t believe that the towers are gone, that so many lives have been lost. Even when I see the site where The World Trade Center once stood. September 21st ? The Love This was truly the most hopeful day I had since the September 11th attacks. I spent the morning answering calls to the Crisis Line set up by The New York Convention and Visitors Bureau. Four of every five calls were from people wanting to reach out. Many were doing so by flying to New York City (from Texas, Tennessee, Alaska, Oregon, New Mexico ? you name it) to stay for just one night to put money into the city?s economy, take gifts to local fire-fighters, volunteer? anything to help. Many called to voice their concern and support ? just because they had no one in the area to voice it to. There was so much love. Mayor Rudy Gulianni opened SNL with two-dozen police, fire and rescue personnel. The City is back in business. Today ? Moving Forward Today I am packing, tomorrow I am moving to Upper Montclair in New Jersey ? a move that was planned before the attacks. It is so ironic. Using old newspapers as packing material, I continuously come across images of the attacks ? images that are permanently embedded in my mind. They bring tears to my eyes. After the move, I will continue to work (and play) in Manhattan ? only my residence will be elsewhere. But, with this new environment will come new outlooks, new sentiments, new thoughts and new routines. I am moving on. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Even though we are a couple hours behind, I had already been at work for several hours. I am a purchasing agent for a plumbing company and I heard about the tragedy on the radio. I immediately took off for a supplier's shop to watch on TV what I was only able to see through my mind's eye. We closed down our company before lunch so that everyone could pick up their kids and be with whatever family they might have. I spent months crying every time I heard the national anthem. My most singular memory was of the African American fireman (or was it a policeman?) singing the "God Bless America" at all the Yankee's games. I swear I have never shed so many tears in such a short time. Like most Americans I knew a few people killed, and I will forever remember September 11th 2001. It was the day our current society lost its innocence. It was the day I was robbed of friendships. I remember talking to those older than I about the assasination of JKF; and it seems no matter how young or old you are, you remember that day. 9-11 will be the day that no one will forget for the new generations. Tell us your story: On the day of September 11th I was getting ready for another day at school, I go out the door and kiss my mom and jump on the bus. We arrive at school just like any other day. The bell rings and we all arive in homeroom for a few minutes when my teacher gets a call from her husband saying one of the World Trade Center buildings has been hit, so we turn to CNN and it looked liked something from a movie. A few minutes later we look and you can see another plane headed right for the other building, as we were all in horror. The bell rings and we all go to our next hour class when there was a substitute teacher standing right next to me and I ask her did you hear about the World Trade Center Buildings get hit by commercial aircrafts, and she said "no I didn't" so she turned to the news channel and there it is holes in both of the buildings with smoke coming out of the them. After a few hours went by and I was in my last hour class and it finally hit me that innicent people were losing their lives of something they didn't do. This day of September 11th was going to be a day to remember forever and to be never forgotten. The next day after this tragic event everybody was in sorrow for the people who lost their lives and also for their loved ones. So as I'm writing this letter this goes out to all the people who are affected by this event and I'm quoting "We may have lost the battle but we haven't lost the War, and keep hope in our country and our pride for freedom". I was at work and heard the news on a local radio talk show. I immediately called my husband and relayed the news to him. I called my son's school to make sure that he and the other children were alright. I called my daughter's daycare to make sure that she was fine. Even though I knew that they were fine, I just needed to connect with my family. I banded together with coworkers as we shed tears of terror, sympathy, outrage, incredulity, and almost a selfishness in that we were thankful we and our families were safe. How have the events of September 11, 2001 and the aftermath affected me? I am more generous with telling and showing my family how much I love them. I am trying to be more tolerant. I go out of my way to be helpful to others. I overlook insignificant things that would have bothered me a year ago. I make time to read "one more story" to my children. I eat the last cannoli, forgetting about the calories it contains. I forego housework when the kids want to play. In other words, I celebrate the gift of life and try to live each and every day the best that I can. In doing so, hopefully I am instilling in my children a deep and profound love of live, family and freedom. I love my family. I love my friends. God bless my family, God bless my friends. I am a Police Officer for the city of Palm Beach Gardens, and didn't get home till 3am that morning, when I got a phone call from my mother,who also lives in Florida, telling me that there was an explosion in the World Trade Center and that my brother Sal works in there. I told my wife, who is also a Police Officer, to turn on CNN, this was at approx. 9:03am and just as she did we saw the second plane crash into tower 2. We both sat there in total disbelief. We though it was a computer generated simulation of a plane crashing into the World Trade Center until we heard them say that another plane just hit the World Trade Center. I could not beleve what was going on and then when the towers collapsed my heart stopped.I sat there helplessly and watch as my brother die right before my eyes and I could not do a thing to help him, it was the worst felling in the world. My brother Sal was a senior vice president for Marsh & Mclennan Companies, and he worked on the 100th floor of tower 1 his office was on the same side that the plane impacted on. On March 10th,2002 they recovered my brother Sal's body.I will miss my brother very much. It was by far not "Magnifico", no,no,no. I have nothing against these people's beliefs, I simply think that they should keep it to themselves. I have my beliefs, and I keep them to myself unless asked for my opinion. I believe that when someone dies, it is their time to go, their spirit has been purified enough to depart it's worldly encasings and move into the spirit relm, where it may learn, for future reference, how to devote itself more to God. Everything happens for a reason and until we understand that our spirit cannot evolve. These terrorist attacks were simply a way to help spirits evolve. Personally I hope I die young, this way I would know that I am more purified and am closer to spiritual evolution. The catastrophic devastation that was present on that day made every American lose their sense of security. For a period of time, most of us did not believe something of this nature was possible, but yet, it was happening at that very moment. The events shattered many lives that day and the days that followed, yet patriotism and the unity of our nation rose up, despite our devastation. We as Americans could not show our fear and weakness, we would not perish, nor would we get mad, it was the getting even that made it all worth while. It was a truly beautiful sight to ride through a neighborhood, or down any street for that matter, and see an American flag flying high and proud at every residence and on every vehicle. I really felt a connection with all the firefighters, rescue workers and police officers that lost their lives during the attacks of 9/11. My boyfriend and I both volunteer at the Fire Department near our home in New Kent. He is both a firefighter and an EMT and I am just an EMT, and the brotherhood that exists between us and the other members is amazing, we are as close as a family. We are all the same, we risk our lives for the sake of others, not even the risk of death scares us, if we go, we go doing what we love best, helping others in their time of need. The out pour of help and dedication from the community in support and appreciation of local Fire Departments and Rescue Squads amazed us all, they always knew we were there in case of an emergency but it was truly touching to receive their support publicly and out of free will. I am not an EMT for the glory of the spotlight, nor to be a hero, neither is my boyfriend, and neither were the ones that lost their lives trying to save others. To them, getting paid for it was a plus, but they still would have done it anyway for free, just the sheer desire to help others kept them going inside the building that would topple upon them. I, personally, will never forget the events of that dreadful day, it will be a day that goes down in history and I will remember every detail. I will never let my children forget what happened, and to always look over their shoulders and to never let their guard down, no matter how strong they think they are, because if they are too comfortable and convenient, that leaves an opportunity for destruction. September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten by any around the world and those who lost their lives will be forever in our hearts, all as heroes. My teacher, Mr. tibbits came in and was evidently concerned about whatever was going on. He said that class would be short today and he wanted us to go watch the tv because this was one of those moments that everyone would be talking about and that our grandchildren would ask where were on this day. A girl I went to high school with who sat just across from me got a phone call in the middle of class, got up and ran out of the room crying. Later I found out that her brother was on his way from Washington D.C. to LA on an American Airlines flight but it turned out ok. Once class let out I went to the library where they had a tv set up by the check out desk. Me and about a dozen students watched the collapse and the makeshift hospital on the pentagon lawn. After about thirty minutes I had enough and went to my car, drove to the Marine Recruting Center and staired at the place for about an hour or more. I wanted to go in there and join up and go right then. I wanted to join since I was 16, my parents hated the idea, they thought it was below me. I decided to go home and tell them before I signed knowing what would happen; fight. We fought from around three that afternoon till early the next moment. I didn't sign because of them. For a long time I hated that I didn't. I can't even look at my friends who went becuase I feel so embarassed. I feel ashamed of myself. I didn't go because they said if I did it ment that I didn't love them. I do, but I don't know how I will ever forgive them for this, or myself. We were recieving a delivery of a wall unit from Ikea. One of the men bringing the wall unit upstairs to our apartment tells me, "ma'am you should call your local gas company cause there is a strong smell like gas". I told him I will do that. I called Kespan, but the lines were busy, that was strange. It was about the time when the second plane hit that I had to call the post office because the mailboxed of our apartment building had been all broken and I had to call daily around 10am to see if we had mail to go and pick it up in the post office. The guy that answered the post office tells me that the post office was closed. I thought he was being smart with me and I told him off. Then he tells me I should turn on the tv. I said, "what, excuse me?". As I held the phone I turn to the tv. I didn't make out the WTC building's just yet. It looked like a war zone, I figured in another country. I hung up the phone. It still didn't hit me for about 20 minutes of looking at this breaking news report. So I begin to change it to see what channels are covering this and not. As I was changing one of the channels caught my attention cause they said, "It appeared that a plain crashed into the North tower of the WTC". That got my attention. My husband works for Time Warner Cable down there. My heart stopped. At the time he didn't have a cell phone. I called his office in Queens NY. His supervisor told me not to worry that they called in all the Tech's. I began to cry. I knew something really bad was happening. I felt so much pain knowing that all my life I loved the WTC site cause it was so breathtaken. I always wanted to go to the 110th floor's observatory deck. I never did. I thought of all the people that were there early that faithful Election Day Tuesday morning September 11th, 2001. How many times did I pass you by and felt you were anoying cause they all walked so fast. And now all I can think is how I wish so bad that you were all still here to anoy me. I didn't know anyone that died there but they were all my brothers and sisters, by God. My neighbors, I dedicated a song to all those we lost on 9/11/2001; "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart", By The Bee Gees. It helps me with the healing process, which honestly will never end. My son is now almost 2 on October 5th, 2003 and we are expecting a baby girl now. Due around the beggining of October. Everyone was so excited to finally leave the teachers, students & all the drama that comes with High School. I remember leaving my first period English class and moving on to History. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to work that beutiful, sunny, September morning from my home in Alexandria to Falls Church, Virginia. I had left late...around 8:40am as I had to go to a work-related dinner that evening. I always have the radio on in the car, and this morning was no exception. I was amazed when the announcer broke in to report that a twin engine plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York. Having grown up in the shadows of New York City in Fair Lawn, NJ, I immediately thought of people back home, but I really wasn't panicked. Honestly, I didn't really know what a twin engine plane was, and thought that a sightseeing plane had accidentally hit the tower. I proceeded to work. The building I work in is a large medical center, and we have several television sets in the lobby and waiting rooms, all tuned to CNN. I was immediately struck how everyone seemed to be huddled around the sets, and I could make out the CNN captions "Plane hits WTC". Again, the severity of the situation somehow escaped me, and I went up to my office. Several minutes passed, and my phone rang. It was my father, audibly upset. He works in Jersey City, next to Liberty State Park, and directly across the Hudson River from the WTC. "Did you hear about the planes?", he asked me. "Planes? I thought there was only one," I said, panic now starting to set in. "I saw the second one hit," he recalled, obviously shaken. I could hear the anxiety in his voice. I could also hear the PA system in his building in the background. It seemed that people did not know what to do...stay, or go home. While still on the phone with him, my other line rang. "Dad, stay put. Let me get this other line." I put him on hold, and picked up the other line. It was my mother. "Dominique is at the World Trade Center today." I'll never forget those words. Dominique, the lively 27 year old daughter of my mother's closest friend and coworker Barbara was in the worst possible place that morning. She didn't even normally work there. But, she had a training meeting for her company Marsh that morning. Barbara was trying to call her on her cell phone, without success. After a brief conversation with my mother, I went back to my father. Details get blurry, but I think I told him about Dominique and he told me he was heading home. I remember going out into the waiting room with coworkers to watch the events unfold on CNN. Watching the buildings fall, I sobbed audibly. I paced the hallways, telling people that my friend Dominique was there, and that no one had heard from her yet. Somewhere in the middle of all of this, the Pentagon got hit. We then started hearing all sorts of rumors...a car bomb at the State Department...an explosion at the FAA headquarters...it was awful. Management at my facility were having emergency meetings. Because I work in the healthcare field, they were looking for volunteers to go to local hospitals to assist as needed. I called my supervisor. I needed to go home. Driving home was surreal. Cars and people were clogging the streets. I could see the smoke from the Pentagon fire while driving home. I couldn't seem to get in touch with my uncle who works at the Navy Annex across from the Pentagon, so I drove to my aunt's office and learned he was okay. Police roadblocks were everywhere. I made it home, and shared stories with my neighbor who had been in DC that morning for a meeting. My friends Jay and Chuck brought there cats over, and stayed with me that whole day and night. Their apartment is in Pentagon City, and they took some pictures of the Pentagon from their aprtment windows. We watched the news most of the afternoon, in between calls to my family back home in NJ. Remarkably, I was able to get through most of the time. My cell phone was useless. No news about Dominique. "What if she's dead?" I cried to my mother. "Don't say that. We're not going there" she replied. At about 6pm, we decided we needed to take a break from the news, and walked to a nearby shopping center to get dinner. It was eerie...stores all had handwritten signs in the windows "Closed due to emergency." Starbucks was closed. The grocery store was closed. We did find a little restaurant and choked down some food. Strangers talked to one another and tried to digest what was happening. Some had gone to give blood, only to have been turned away...too many volunteers, they were told. We went back home, and I frantically checked my messages...no word on Dominique. By then, the phone lines were all jammed, and I couldn't get through. After a restless night, the phone rang at 5am. I picked up to hear my mother sobbing uncontrollably. I could barely understand her. Still no word. And reality was sinking in. Dominique was missing. And, as we would learn officially many months later when they were able to identify some of her remains, our dear friend Dominique Pandolfo lost her life at the World Trade Center, September 11, 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 started out a normal day for all of us at Barker Central School. It was a beautiful sunny day, definitely not the type of day that anyone would expect tragedy to occur. I had gotten up that morning not even thinking about my day. I got on the bus and went to school just like every day not a care in the world. At school everything seemed to be normal but it wasn't it was like America was sitting on a time bomb that was about to be detonated. Third period, chorus was when I first realized what was happening. When I walked into the classroom my teacher asked if I had heard what was going on. When I said that I didn't he then directed my attention to the TV. I sank into a seat by my best friend and focused on the TV. I watched the replays of planes hitting two buildings then as one of the two buildings collapsed. It took me a few minutes to place the two buildings. When I finally understood it was the World Trade Centers I was shocked. Terrorists had attacked America, not just America but New York State. The state that I live in! Through out the day more stories spilled in about another plane hitting the pentagon and then the rumor about a car bomb. I was horrified to think that some terrorist could get through our security and kill innocent people. My life changed that day. I have always been patriotic and this event just made me more so, but it disgusted me to think that it would take a tragedy such as this to make people realize what their country means to them. America has many rights that other countries could never even dream about. Not to long ago immigrants would call America the land of opportunity. President Bush has the right idea when he said that America would not fall only get stronger. Americans have pride in their country and no one can ever take that away, not the British in 1776, not when our country was divided and definitely not some Arab terrorists. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 ~ is exactly one week after my sixtieth birthday. I was sitting at my computer at home, as is usual, and my husband phoned from his car. "Turn on the TV" he commanded. "An airplane has crashed into the World Trade Center!" I cried "Oh, my God". On TV, I saw the second plane explode into the other tower and I knew it was war. I cannot remember if I tried to find my children immediately or if it was after the Pentagon attack. My oldest son is at home in Herndon, so I feel he is as safe as are we in Springfield, but Jamey is downtown, in the capital city. How would he be able to come home to Virginia, as the bridges would surely be closed? His wife's skills are required at the hospital to attend to casualties expected from the Pentagon, so I feel he needs to be with his children. Rumors are flying about other attacks on the government. Although my earnest prayers are with my compatriots who came into harm's way this September morning by attending to their usual business, I want to know my family is safe. What is to come? It is an unsettled time. My homeland attacked just thirteen miles away; I never imagined seeing the Pentagon under siege! Tell us your story: That tuesday morning I was in nutrition class here in Ryerson University in Toronto Canada and one of my classmates came into class and was just talking about how a plane crashed into the World Trade Center, I had just thought that it was a serious accident where a small aircraft hit the tower, but then another teacher came into class later on and said that the US "is under attack and the World Trade Center & Pentagon were hit". The whole school was shut down and I guess everyone was let out early from work and everyone packed in the subways. Police were present everywhere, in the subways and on the streets since my school was near the business district and near the CN Tower. I called my Gilfriend right away because she lives there in Fairfax and actually goes to school in GMU. With the cellphone i was using, all the lines were taken up and I wasnt able to get in contact with her for another hour. Even the people in subways were talking about what had happened and me in my own mind didnt have a clue what was going on. On the drive home, there were less cars on the road as usual and all the radio stations were talking about it..every single station. I got home and I saw the images on the TV and at that moment i knew that everything had changed. I will never forget that day.
