It was my sister called me, knowing my husband is an airline pilot, she told me to turn on the TV there had been a plane crash in NY. I hung up the phone and turned on the TV, it was about 8:55 am. I sat listening to initial reports, that a small plane, possibly a multi-engine plane had flown into one og the twin towers at the world trade center. Minutes later, to my absolute horror another plane hit the second tower. I was in shock, I ran to the bathroom where my husband was in the shower, yelling that something horrible was going on "planes are flying into the world trade center" I told him. He thought I was crazy, he asked if I knew what I was talking about. "The same place the bomb went off a few years ago?" he asked. "YES" I said. He came into the living room, dripping wet in a towel and stood in front of the tv just staring. He had to go to work, at the airline, he was scheduled to be in at 9:30. I sat silent, staring at the tv while my 2 year old twins, played unaware. When the plane struck the pentagon, I remember thinking the world was coming to an end. My husband called, telling me to get our daughter from school. He said he wanted the children home with me. I cried, I hugged my children close. I grieved for all those people, caught in the tragedy, for those families not knowing where loved ones were, for our nation so devestated. That was one year ago today. Today I again, stared at the television, mesmerized. Saddened, grieving for the same people, the same nation. Although I lost no loved ones that day, I feel I lost a piece of myself, a sence of security, the bright future of my children seems clouded. Although a year has passed the devestation still seems to fresh, so needless, so unwarrented. i will carry the momories of that day for the rest of my life. As I sit and relate this story, I hope for a brighter future, to once again feel secure in this, the greatest of nations. I pray for my fellow Americans, for our children, our leaders,for our country, I pray that we win this war against terrorism, God Bless America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: During the 9/11 attacks, I was in my home in Korea watching TV and flicking channels when I got to the news channel. I was astonished to see that one of the World Trade Center Towers were on fire. While my mom was sleeping, I told her the news and brought her over to my room where the TV was. She was surprised as well. Later, another tower crashed into the second tower and that's when we were sure it was the act of terrorists. We weren't sure how our friends and relatives were because the people closest to us were in Korea then, but I believe we called my uncle in New York City in the district of Queens located pretty far away from Manhattan. I think we couldn't get connected because the phones were down then(which probably most people experienced). The first significant thing that happened to me as a result of the attack was the increased security at the airports when I was returning to the States. Security personel were much more stricter than they had been and it took forever to get through security. Over time we forgot about the attacks but every year the anniversaries remind us of the incident. 9/11 was like the events of terrorism going on in the Middle East today. I looking and it was right after the first plane crashed into the first World Trade Center. It really didn't mean anything to me, because I wasn't familiar with the World Trade Centers. Then after a couple of minutes of watching the live coverage, the second plane crashed into the second World Trade Center. I looked at my Mother and said what is going on? I thought to myself "What am I going to do I'm days away from bring a new life into this world." Now I have a beautiful daughter, I just hope she can enjoy her life just like everyone else has. On September 14th,2002 she turns 1 years old. Hopefully one day she'll turn 11 and many years after that. My thoughts went way beyond where policemen and firefighters were, it went to civilians and military also. How were our servicemen and the families of the civilians. How are they doing today. We have bombarded with the firefighters and police families and those concerned in this respect. My prayers and concerns today are for those families not particularly mentioned. I started to walk into band and saw a TV sitting in the room, and immediately started giggling with my friend, commenting that ?man those people are crazy for wasting break on an old marching band video?. As we turned to corner our snickers faded into silent horror as I realized that the both of the World Trade Center towers were on fire. Slowly but surely the rest of the class filed in having almost the same reaction and my friend and I did. The door to the room became a barrier; every time people went through the door, they stopped smiling and laughing and silently found seats around the TV. We all watched as the news anchors speculated about terrorism and why this horrible event had happened. Another teacher soon walked into our room and while he shook his head and looked confused, he said ?lets just hope that no from our area was up there today.? His words made us all turn and nod in agreement, but still, we didn?t make a sound. This was what truly made me realize that this was serious. An entire room of rambunctious teenagers was sitting in silence, total silence. Everyone was so shocked and bewildered that no one even knew what to say. I remember saying a silent thank you in my head that my mom was in DC today instead of with her employees in New York. I know that everyone around me with parents in the government was doing the same thing, just as the awful news broke. A plane had crashed into the Pentagon. As the FOX 5 anchor broke the news, the room burst into sound. At least half the room started crying; I hadn?t realized how many people had military parents and suddenly I it hit me that this was going to affect most of the school in some way or another. I walked around to my friends and gave them hugs trying to assure them that their parents were going to be ok. I didn?t have a strong connection with anyone who had parents in the Pentagon I thought, and then it hit me--my best friend since first grade. Her father worked at the Pentagon; I had to find her to see if he was ok. I walked around the corner, to find her standing by her locker crying she looked lost and like she need a friend. As we made eye contact she just fell into my arms sobbing. Between gasps she said that she hadn?t talked to her dad, and that the plane crashed into his office. We found a teachers cell phone to use, and she tried home to talk to her mom, and then her dad answered. He had left early because he felt sick, and had been on his way home when the plane hit. The rest of the day passed in a blur, I wandered from class to class listening to the news and wondering why anyone could do this to us. I found out that my mom had to stay in the command center of her building for the afternoon, and that my brother had been on 95 across from the Pentagon when the plane hit. I sat for the night watching everything on TV, and I woke up the next morning thinking it was all a bad dream, but soon realizing that it wasn?t. I was thankful that all of my family and friends were ok, but because of this I didn?t realize how much this tragedy would affect some people. My mom went to New York a week after the attacks and walked with her employees through the rubble of ground zero. They examined the piles of debris and talked to officers who had removed bodies from the rubble and heard their horror stories. She claimed that it didn?t affect her, but when she came home a week later she told me that she had nightmares for a week about what she saw. She dreamt she was walking through the street and had people reach up through the ground and try to pull her down. This made me truly realize that the sights and sounds from the attack sites would affect this country forever. Some people would only remember TV shows and others would need psychiatrists to help them forget. Either way this country was touched and changed forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I will always remember where I was on September 11, 2001. That day will be burned into my mind for all time. I am sure that 35 years from now, if God grants me that long of a life, I will still recall those moments and hours like it was just happening. I work in a major hospital as a medical technologist. That day I was assigned in bank. It is usually very busy in the morning preparing crossmatches and types and screens for those going to surgery and doing the usual morning work that needs to be done. We usually keep the radio on and listen to music and news. Sometimes our radio does not come in very clearly due to so much interference from machinery that is in the lab and other areas of the hospital. That was the case that morning. Our radio was picking up static and I was trying to move the rabbit ears around to get better reception when I heard that a plane had went into the World Trade Center. My heart started pounding and I quickly told the rest of my coworkers what I had heard. Eventually other areas of the lab were hearing similar stories from their radios. A t.v. is in our pathology library and someone quickly turned it on after the announcement that a second plane had hit the towers as well. My mother called me at work to ask me if I had heard what was going on. She was quilting with some other ladies at our church building. I told her I had heard the news and quickly hung up to make my way to the library to see the events taking place. As I entered the room and saw the towers burning I remember feeling like lead had entered my legs. I had no will to move and with mounting horror I stood staring at the t.v. Many others were there watching already when I came in. As we looked on the announcement came that the pentagon had been hit also. Time seemed suspended even though we all had work to do. I went back to bank and checked to make sure there was no work coming in and it seemed as if the whole hospital had stopped. I made another trip to the library and it was during this trip that we witnessed the towers falling. Up until that time my thoughts were that people must be escaping from those buildings and those individuals on the planes must surely be gone. But as those buildings fell I began to pray to God to be with all those that were trapped in those towers unable to escape. I felt numb and sick to my soul for those that perished, families left behind and all those trying so valiantly trying to rescue others only to die. Also my thoughts began to turn to those medical institutions that were having to care for all the survivers. We are trained only slightly for horrible emergencies such as this. Yes, we get taken through emergency scenerios, but it is not like going through the real thing. Knowing that my fellow bankers would be working so hard to provide the best services that they could with surely depleted supplies made me thankful and proud to be in my profession. But sadly, as the news continued to come in on that day we learned that all the area hospitals, though prepared for the vast numbers of inviduals to come, waited in vain. My prayer for us today is that we can learn from 9/11 and begin to learn tolerance for our fellow human beings. It begins with me and then can spread through all mankind. I know some would say this is very idealistic but I also know that through God all things are possible. May God bless and comfort all those that lost family, friends and loved ones to this horrible tragedy and may you heal knowing that many millions of voices are raised to God in prayer for you. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Sep 11,2001 We parked the car in the parking lot on the south side of I395; the parking ticket indicates 0921 A.M. Our goal was to be in the TRADOC Liaison office to meet up with our SES, Mr. Sakowitz, and prepare him for the meeting scheduled for 1030 A.M. We collected our brief cases and coats, locked the car and headed for the tunnel walkway under the Interstate. As we walked through the tunnel there was small talk between us that related to the meeting and wondering where Mr. Sakowitz was at the moment, was he waiting for us or was he going to be late. Exchanges of morning hellos to passer-byes were plentiful and the mix of people consisted of uniformed military personnel and civilians, all coming or going from the Pentagon. We exited the tunnel and viewed the Pentagon on this bright sunshiny day, but we had to cross the large parking lot to get to the building. As we walked across the parking lot, I glanced at my watch taking note that we would not be in the liaison office at 0930, the time we were suppose to meet with Mr. Sakowitz. We kept up a steady brisk pace towards the Pentagon and stepped up on the curb to figure out which door to enter. The Southside entrance to the building has two footways that pedestrians use to enter the building. Not knowing if the entrances have a name designation, I can only state one was on my left side and the other on the right. We noticed the majority of people were using the right crossover, then noticed the left one was apparently closed. So we followed suit and proceeded up the stairs to crossover on the right stairwell. At the top of the steps we turned left and headed for the entrance. My Colonel was behind me and I noticed as we walked, all the military personnel leaving the building were rendering salutes to him. I thought to myself that this was one place where military courtesy is more noticeable than other places I have been. Halfway across the gangway I changed my thoughts to entering the building and started to reach for my wallet to get my ID ready to show the security guard. I had never entered the Pentagon from this side before and wasn?t sure what the screening process was going to be at this entrance. I knew I was on the access roster, didn't anticipate any problem. I was walking beside one of my colleges, Mr. White, as we were about to enter the building when for some unknown reason I looked to my left. In an instant, I observed an airplane crossing over I395 at about 200-300 feet and descending, but in controlled flight. My estimate was the plane was traveling at approximately 300-400 MPH. Once I could see the entire plane it was quite clear it was an American Airlines commercial airplane, in trouble and flying in the wrong place. My first thought was that the airplane was not supposed to be there. Then my thoughts switched, the airplane was having an emergency and was looking for an area to set down in. I knew the pilot was trying to avoid hitting the traffic on the highway leading into the downtown D.C. area, while at the same time, avoiding the Pentagon. Maybe he?s going to try and make it around the Pentagon and land at Reagan airport. Then the right wing dipped down and the plane veered to the right and slammed into the Pentagon. I had already stopped walking and blurted out ?oh my god, oh my god, a plane just crashed into the building.? I stared at the fireball and the odor of jet fuel began to fill the air. I started to turn around to get away from the building when I heard some one say that a bomb had just gone off, I shouted out it was an airplane, an airplane crashed into the building. Then shouts and screams of fear and terror filled all around as the panic started to set in. As I approached the steps to get down from the gangway I noticed a security guard jump off his bike and started hollering instructions to the people to get away from the building. I said to myself aloud, ?we?re trying? every time he made that statement. At the bottom of the steps we cleared the curbing and then started to cross the Pentagon parking lot. We headed for the base of the interstate at a point under the overpass and turned to observe the chaos taking place. We had three cell phones between the four of us and we began to start calling family and the office. The phone system was jammed and we couldn?t get out, nothing but busy signals. When I did get through, it was only messaging service, so I left one to my wife?s cell phone number, not knowing if it went through. The Colonel was having trouble also connecting with his phone, so was Tom Massey. We passed our phones to Russ so he could call his wife. It was next to impossible to get out. As I looked at the people gathering on the sidewalks, almost everyone had a cell phone I knew there was an overload of the phone system. I stood there next to the Colonel in disbelief at what I just observed and just couldn?t believe I was seeing this disaster. As we stood there, I think I was describing to the Colonel what I saw when a LTC from the Air Force moved and stood in front of us. He turned around and stated that a plane hit the World Trade Center in NY earlier and that a second plane hit the second building. I believe he said the buildings had collapsed but I?m not sure. Until that moment, we had no idea the World Trade Centers had been hit by airplanes nor the thoughts of terrorists were involved. Then the Air Force LTC asked me if I saw the plane hit the Pentagon, I answered yes and started to describe to him what I saw. Several people turned and listened and repeatedly asked, ?you saw the plane?? As we stood there in amazement with all the other people, my eyes kept scanning in search of Mr. Sakowitz and Barb Harmon, the two people from TRADOC we were suppose to meet at the liaison office. Emergency vehicles began arriving, fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, all converging into the Pentagon from every conceivable access trying to avoid hitting the many people and cars trying to get out of the way. As I stood there I saw debris scattered all around and watched helicopters starting to fly around the area; I felt they were news helicopters and probably emergency medivac helicopters. The Air Force LTC had walked away while we were standing there, but then returned and approached me and stated the FBI was taking statements from eyewitnesses as to what took place and asked me to go give a statement to them. Colonel Good told me to go give a statement and I asked Russ and Tom to take my briefcase. I started walking the road that circled around the West Side of the Pentagon and located the FBI agents unloading their gear. One agent directed me to another agent who took my statement as to what I saw. As I was talking to him I was noticing the devastation to the building; I was so close to point of impact and in disbelief of what I saw. I looked behind the agent and there was a soldier sitting on the ground bleeding from his hand. Another was laying on a backboard with bandages across his face and chest. Rescuers were scrambling with their backboards towards the burning building as if more injured had been located and needed help. I finished giving my statement to the FBI agent and started to return back to where I left the Colonel, Tom and Russ. I couldn?t help but notice that high overhead was a C-130 aircraft that made an abrupt overhead turn as if he was in the area and saw the airplane flying low and was watching his movements. After the impact he was probably in disbelief of what he saw and then turned to depart the area, something I believe what every military pilot would have done. As massive as it was, maybe he flew high overhead to see the cause of the smoke and flames coming from the Pentagon. As I continued to walk, shouts of terror began flowing from and through the many people on the surrounding grounds to vacate the area, that another plane was inbound and going to crash in the building. People started running to get away from the area as quick as they could. I watched one man try to climb a fence he was so terrified, another person yelled at him ?where do you think you are going, you can?t get far enough away?. The man backed down off the fence and stood there in amazement, I kept walking back to where I left the Colonel earlier. As I approached the area, the Colonel was gone and so were Russ and Tom. I quickly scanned the general area, they weren?t there, obviously they moved to the parking lot where the rental car was parked. So I walked under the overpass and crossed two roadways and entered the opposite end of the parking lot where the car was parked. People were tying to leave the area and traffic had already begun to jam up. I was about halfway through the parking lot and I noticed several people who were to be in the 1030 meeting. Standing there was Colonel Brown, Ms. Shands, and two others. I asked Colonel Brown if he had seen Mr. Sakowitz and he said no. I looked at Ms. Shands and noticed the look of fear in her eyes. I?ve known her some time and knew she was truly shaken at what had just taken place. I continued on towards the rental car and saw my three fellow office workers standing there waiting for me. I had the rental car keys in my pocket and they weren?t going anywhere till I showed up. We put our briefcases and coats in the trunk and the Colonel stated we needed to get out of here now, but I95 was not the way to go. We decided highway 1 South was the way to go and headed out of the parking lot. Traffic was bumper to bumper with a mass exodus to get away from the Pentagon. We continued to try calling out on the cell phones and routinely heard busy signals over and over again. Colonel Good was able to get through to the office on his phone and through all the commotion, was able to have the office people call our families to let them know we were okay. He was also able to get the word Mr. Sakowitz and Barbara Harmon were okay, all TRADOC people were accounted for. Colonel Good dialed my Barbara?s cell phone on his phone and I was able to talk to Barbara and tell her I was okay and where we were. She told me she was on I95 heading south for home; I can?t remember where she said she was at the time. I think I told her we were going to stop somewhere and I would give her a call, If I couldn?t get through, not to worry, I?d be home late that night. From the time we left the parking lot to where we stopped at a restaurant in Alexandria, it took us 2? hours. We hadn?t eaten that morning, the Colonel bought me a cup of coffee at the airport when we picked the car up, we were planning on getting a bite in the Pentagon, so we looked for the first restaurant that we could pull into to get something to eat. Here for the fist time in all the confusion I was able to call Barb and have a decent conversation with her. I assured her everyone was fine and relieved we were able to get out of the area. I told her we were getting something to eat and we would be back on the road as soon as we could. She said she probably would expect to see me later that night and to drive safe. I told her not to be surprised if she didn?t hear from me any time soon because the phone system was impossible to get through. While sitting in the restaurant we were able to see the television and the pictures of the World Trade Center incidents that took place prior to the Pentagon incident. We had the radio on when we left the parking lot at the Pentagon and was listening to the news reports, but had no idea of the magnitude the damage and destruction until we saw it on the television. We finished eating, jumped back into the car and headed home. Colonel Good was able to talk to the office again on his cell phone and I could hear Tom in the back seat talking on his as I drove. Traffic thinned out enough that we made good time heading south, our first stop was to drop Tom and Russ off at their cars that they parked at the Days Inn that morning. The Colonel and I continued down I64 heading for his house so I could drop him off and turn in the rental car at the airport. I turned the car in and jumped in my truck. I no sooner got on the interstate then I called Barb and told her where I was at and would be at the house in about 20-25 minutes. I pulled into the drive and the garage door was opened and Barb?s car parked inside. I shut the truck off and started to get out of the truck and Barb came out of the house. We hugged and kissed as if we hadn?t seen each other for months. Barb told me that even though we had talked; her fist thoughts were that something had happened to me, I kept assuring her I was all right. We came into the house and I immediately took a shower, dressed and came downstairs to watch the horror on the TV that I had personally witnessed that morning. Over and over again I watched the replays of the day's events and just couldn?t believe what had happened. From the very moment I first saw the airplane coming over the road to when it crashed into the building, not more than 2-3 seconds of time elapsed. Yet the horror of it all was put into slow motion in my mind and it seemed like it stretched over a longer period of time. I first saw the nose of the plane and then it grew in size exposing its wings with the gigantic engines followed by the tail and the distinct emblem of American Airlines. The plane was flying fast, very fast. I?d estimate between 300-400 MPH and descending. I thought there was an emergency, but saw no smoke or visible damage to the aircraft; it looked totally in tact. I feared for the people commuting on the highway, I thought for sure that the plane was going to crash on them, killing, maiming, burning, and destroying everything in its path. At the same time I feared for the passengers on the plane, they were helpless; they didn?t know what was about to happen to them. I pictured in my mind a plane full of helpless people strapped into their seats and the impact that awaits them. I could see the cockpit windows quite clear, but I couldn?t see the pilots or the fear on their faces. I could only visualize their frantic efforts to fly the plane with whatever emergency they were trying to handle. The plane kept descending and the roar of the massive engines could be heard and the air seemed to start vibrating. The right wing dipped down, I felt sure the tip would hit the ground and send the plane into a cartwheel. Instead, the plane veered right and plowed into the wall of the Pentagon. The ball of fire and black billowing smoke quickly filled the air followed by the absolute smell of jet fuel. Debris was everywhere, I noticed the traffic on the highway had come to a complete standstill, I felt sure their were mass casualties along the entire west side of the Pentagon. At the time, I had no earthly clue what I was observing was a terrorist act in the making. I strongly felt the plane was having an emergency and the pilot was doing everything he could to save the lives of everyone on board. My god I could have been on that plane. My wife could have been on that plane. My worst fears were starting to play the "what if" game with my mind. What if the plane had been on a flight path that was a few degrees more to the right, the four of us wouldn?t be here today. What coincidence is it that we happened to be at the Pentagon on this particular day at this particular time? Most of all, what would I have done if I had looked up and saw the plane coming directly at us? I know what the obvious answer would be and realize those passengers couldn?t do anything either. I went to bed that night with mixed emotions knowing the entire world was not going to be the same yet the next morning I was going to go into the office. I had called my team and told them not to come to the office until I had called them, only the team chiefs were to come in. My mind raced as I lay there, re-living the events of the day. The most vivid scene constantly being replayed was what I had observed that morning on the walkway into the Pentagon. I'll forever remember and relive those few seconds of terror that took place for the rest of my life. My day ended, I was home, safe and sound. Tell us your story: i don't normally listen to the radio or watch tv in the morning, and this was no abnormal morning. i got up and had a 9:30 class at NOVA, on the way to class i was listening to a cd and nothing seemed wrong. when i got there my friend was just pulling in after me and we parked together and walked inside joking and have a good time. we sat down in class and some people looked worried but we didn't pay any attention to it and just chatted amongst ourselves. after a few minutes the professor walked in and said "I'm sure everyone knows what's going on.....right?". my friend and i looked at eachother and were puzzled, so for those of us to ignorant to pay attention to unfolding events he told us that the north tower had been hit and no one was sure if it was an accident or not, and that because of this he was cancelling class and for the students to go home and be with thier families. so my friend and i thought it was just going to be a day off, and that it was just some sort of freak accident, so we left class kind of joking about going to work out at the gym and maybe catch a movie, but also kind of interested in what happened. so we sat in my car and popped out the cd and as soon as we did we heard ".....my god, the north tower has been hit, holy !@#$ what's going on........." so we got real worried real quick. so we changed to another station and heard "...... folks this is a very sad day in U.S. history we are under attack and the pentagon has been hit......". that very second, i felt very ill and my friend got really really pale.......... his step father works in the pentagon, and is in there, as well as my best friend's father, and my aunt. so we took off form the parking lot back to my friends house praying to god his step father and our friends father and my aunt were all safe. all the way home i was calling my friend's family, and not getting through, getting a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that someone close to me was no longer, it was hard to hold back the tears, so very very hard. but thankfully as we pulled up to my friends house i got ahold of my friends mother and thank god his dad was in a confrence in another state and left 2 nights b4. but i still had that feeling, and when we got into my friend house his mother was crying her eyes out and i almost lost it. she couldn't get ahold of my friends step father and he was home.so we sat there hoping and hoping that he was alright after about an hour we hear him tear down the street and pull in, it was the best sound ever. it turned out he was on the adjacent side to where it was hit when the plane hit, he was alright and that just left one person, and i couldn't get a hold of my mom to find out. at around 3 when the phone lines were clearing up i got ahold of my mom and found out my aunt was missssing.......... i had to leave the room. around 4 when they said all flights were grounded we heard a horrable noise.......a plane in the air. we live by dulles airport, so it makes it that much more un-nerving. we went outside for the first time in hours a looked up and right there was a plane flying so low that i thought it was going to clip the tree tops, it scared the shit out of me. it was followed by 2 fighter jets, so we just ran back inside hoping that the plane was just landing and there was nothing wrong. around 8 i felt good enought to make the 10 min drive home, and went home. when i got there, i found out that my aunt was ok, just scared, she had been missing cause she got lost in the pentagon, in all the thick smoke, but she made it out none the less. so then i packed up and went to new york, i wanted to help in any way i could, but i got turned away because i was only 18 and had no experiance. i remember that day perfectly and clearly, i can remember the smells, the sights,and everything i felt. 2001 is the year i graduated high school, and the same year that the worst single attack on american soil. it changed every single proud americans life. i had forgotten what my country meant to me until that day, scince then i have never been more proud to be an american, i love this country, and if you are reading this you must love it too, so god bless us and this country. When it really hit me as to what had happened was probably around 4:00 and I was at volleyball practice. I remembedr one of my teammates started to cry histarically because her dad was on a plane to New York and she hadn't heard from him. When i saw what this did to poeple I got very upset. We were just listening to music, and then the news came on, and everyone was like,"Oh, a plane hit the World Trade Center." So we all ran to where the T.V. was. We turned it on and we watched it happen, and saw the second one hit. Then we kept watching it, all morning actually, when the Pentagon got hit, and everybody was speculating about where the President was. Then they closed up shop, and sent us home at the end of the day. Has your life changed because of September 11th, 2001? If so, tell us how. It has not really changed appreciably. It makes us think of certain things differently, but does not actually make your day to day life change much, of the way we have been living it. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think the thing that should be remembered the most is that it all basically happened because two groups of people misunderstood eachother in a very big way. People have to learn to take eachother not so much for granted, and not assume that everybody else is coming from the same place. Because the have and the have-nots tend to get a little angry with eachother. Generally the have-not's get angry with the haves, which would be us. We're the haves. Third World countries, like the people with the bombs are from, they're all the have-nots. There just a little upset with us, because we are not sharing. That's part of the problem. The other part of the problem is the placency. You tend to get a little complacent when you are at the top of the heap.Which is sort of where we stand. And when you assume that everything is just going to roll on wonderfully, you don't take care of the continguinces, and that is something I think has really taught us. The unthinkable can happen, because it did. And it can happen again. So I think what we have got to do is get rid of as many unthinkables as possible. Which means think of them first, and prepare. Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th. We flew it for a long time right after it happened, and we flew it again on national Holidays. But it has not been flying consistently, for the past year. Do I feel differently about it, maybe a little stronger and maybe a little more cohesive. I think that is what it does. I think now days when people see the flag they feel a little more cohesive with their fellow Americans. I was walking to my class when a kid yelled down the hall saying that there was an explosion at some building. I hurried to my class and the teacher had it on. All I knew at that time was a building was on fire. Then the news said that a plane when into the building. We all sat down and started watching it. A little after that we saw the second plane go right into it. That was the most horrible site ever. I thought it was from a movie but then I realized that it wasn't. My heart goes out to all the victims families and the ones who helped out that day. I would like to thank the fire, police and the rescue workers of that day. My hat goes off to you guys and gals. I also am a rescue worker and a medic. Thank you for helping out that day. I would also say that as a nation it shouldn't take an incident like this to bring us together. I cried with all my heart and soul feeling this tradadgy. I was in total shock as the planes flew into the towers and even more as the towers fell. I am a certified wildland firefighter and i cried for days after. I am truely sorry for the loss of life and all the families who lost loved ones & close friends. Tell us your story: My name is Patricia Pilcher, and the day of the attack I was home, mourning the death of my father just 13 days prior to the attack. He passed away on August 29th. He served 27 years in the Army, he retired in 73. He was a character, he surely will be missed. He had lived with my family and I for 2 and 1/2 years, we became very close. We talked about everything. In fact just a couple months or so before the attack, we were talking about an attack happening again, that it was just a matter of time before it happened again. The day of the attack though I was sleeping in my chair in front of the tv, I would sleep alot so that I wouldn't have to face my home without my day bellowing from his room, I still miss that very much. But anyways I woke up right after the first airplane hit the tower. And I thought to myself, oh one of the buildings is on fire. So I kept watching, and a few minutes later, Ms. Katie Couric said ladies and genltemen, a plane has just hit the building, and we don't have anymore details at this time. Then I saw the other plane come around, and thought as everyone else that it was some how caught on video and they were replaying it. Until, they said oh my god another plane just hit the other tower. I got on the phone and called my mom, she lives in New York State. Campbell, NY. We stayed on the phone together for along time. We were talking still when the first tower fell and the then the other one. I was very upsetting, I knew that it was coming, the attack I mean, because they are very patient people, I mean look they had planned this for years. Every sense they bombed the basement of the towers, I told my dad there will be another attack it is just a matter of when. If he were alive when the attacks took place, we would have been talking about all day. He would have been bitching all day and night. I feel really bad for the people who lost loved ones, I cried and was in a mourning type for them, very numb like everyone else. Well that is my story of that day. I got a phone call from one of my very close friends, and he told me the bad news that his brother and cousin were killed in the South Tower. They were on the 100th floor. I felt very sad when I heard about it, and I felt like crying about it in class but I did it inside so everyone couldn't see me crying. When I went to bed that night, I prayed for this not to happen again and for America to be free and have peace in our country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was born and raised in NYC. I moved to MAryland to attend college, soon met a man and got married. I woke up that day like any other, got dressed and went to work. I had recently started a new job and was still in training. I will never forgot 9:00 am a co-worker walks into the room an says "a plane hit the World Trade Building!" I sat in my sit thinking how stupid could you be the not see a huge building in front of you. Less than a minute later she said "I was wrong 2 planes hit the builds." I jumped up from my seat, picked up the phone called my sister in NYC to get my mom's number, only the operator picked up and informed me that NO calls where being placed into or out of NYC. So here I was trapped in Maryland with NO way of knowing if my family was alive, dead or missing. I did not find out that they where ok until Thursday morning. That was the WORST days of my life. The not knowing can tear your mind & heart up. God bless those souls who lost their lives. Tell us your story: I had the day off, listening to the news, I saw the burning first tower and while the newscaster was talking I witness the 2nd building get hit, I was in the military before, and I instantly knew it was no accident. Then news of planes hijacked, then Pentagon, then Pa. I wondered what else, the President ordered planes down, I went toJob Corp in Long Beach to get my daughter Jessie, because she was close to the shipyards, in case they were to be attacked, my husband came home, we tried hard not to worry about our daughter in the Navy in Japan, because we had to wait till she called, and it was days before she was able to. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I first learned about the attack as I was laying on a hospital gurney, strapped into a fetal monitoring system. My obstetrician came dashing into the observation room another expectant mother I shared, and turned on the television. As I watched the newscasts, my adrenaline kicked in and the baby started reacting as well, a reassurance of a hopeful future at a time when the world seemed to be crashing down around us. I was expecting my first child. The pregnancy had gone well but at the beginning of the third trimester, I started experiencing early contractions and developed gestational diabetes so was sentenced by my doctor to weekly hospital visits to ensure Baby?s and Mom?s well being. The mother next to me had just been told she was sufficiently dilated such that she would deliver that day. As we both stared in disbelief as the story of 9/11 unfolded in front of us, we shared our fears about the future, not just for us, but for our soon to be born children. We were also less than a mile from the largest military base in the free world, Fort Hood where both our Army husbands were stationed. This base also serves as a landing site for the President Bush when he visits his Crawford, Texas ranch. We were quite concerned that it too might come under attack. Fortunately, I was able to reach my husband by cell phone and her reassured me the situation was under control by then. After the other mother was wheeled off to labor, I wondered what would happen to her and her baby as nurses started discussing the hospital might close. We didn?t realize it then, but the free world was experiencing the fear, rage, disbelief and uncertainty along with us. Almost a year later, we?re both new moms and our lives are vastly different in many ways. We both get less sleep, but have a beautiful new life that brings us joy. We share sorrow for the families that lost loved ones, but have seen the American people come together with resolve and observe countless heroic acts from everyday people. My husband was deployed to Kuwait for almost five months of his new daughter?s life, but we as a family recognize the weight of his serving to uphold the values of our free democracy. The possibility remains that he may be deployed again, but we will carry on as strong and independent military families have before us, proud of him that he is a soldier, brave and willing to fight for the democratic ideals that affords us the wonderful life we as Americans live. Although we see daily, minor inconviences resulting from 9/11: it is more difficult to get on post; air travel is less convenient; and the news from the Middle East demonstrates the threat of violence is ever-present; we need to remember the big picture: who we are as a country and how much our freedom is worth.
