I was rocking my beautiful baby girl and was watching the Today Show on NBC. They were showing the WTC and one of the towers was smoking. Katie Couric was saying that there was a fire of some kind at the World Trade Center. I called my friend Mary and told her to turn on the television because something horrible was going on...all of those people above the fire floors were trapped. We were asking each other how those people would get out when the announcers said that it was believed that a plane flew into the building! "How off must that pilot have been to fly into a building! There must have been a malfunction!" As we are saying this - live on television - a second plane flies into the second tower. This is no accident! I was not comprehending that it was a second plane. I thought that maybe they had some footage of what had happened to the first tower and they were showing it in replay...but no...this is not that tower, it's the other one...what is going on??? I didn't get it at first. Then, "Oh my God! Mary, what just happened here?" We both started to cry. We had just witnessed hundreds of people die. We didn't see their faces, we didn't know there names, we didn't see their physical demise...but we felt it! We felt the pain and the shock and the horror and the disbelief. My father was in high school the day that JFK was assassinated. He wrote about the kids, the mood, the astonishment at the realization that their world had just changed. He remembers that day and exactly where he was. I remember exactly what I was doing and where I was when the Federal Building in Oklahoma City, OK was bombed. I will remember that day. And, I will remember this one as well. My son was 9 when his world changed from an impenetrable nation to a vulnerable one. He will remember. My daughter was 3 weeks old, she will never know the world of "no fear." I pray that they will always know a world of hope. Our principal, Dr. Frossard came on the speaker and told us that there was some breaking news, and if we wanted to turn our TVs on in our rooms we could at our discretion. I know that at that time, only the first plane had struck and it had just been a few minutes. I had a very small class at that time and they were seniors, so we continued to watch CNN. I can't remember if it was an A or B day but I think B, because I continued watching TV after that class was gone and on B days I was done after second block. I remember watching the the second plane strike, reporters jumping from that scene to DC as everyone heard the Pentagon had been hit, and then even as word of another plane and then finally we knew. I remember watching the towers fall in disbelief and shock, thinking how this could have happened here. Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. I feel there has been a change in my life for sure. I remember that Sunday after 9/11 when we went to church, the minister talking about trying to make sense of something that didn't, trying to understand the non-understandable and that all you ever know you have is that moment. When we got home from church that day I told my husband I wanted to call all my family and have them to dinner. It was so important to me to be with them at that time. I noe know that even here in our country we may never feel totally safe again from outside terrorists and, because of that, innocence is gone. Many years ago my husband and I went to Rome right after a terrorist killed many at the airport and when we arrived there were guards with machine guns and not only were your bags checked, but each person was frisked. Could this now be what would happen in my country? Even though I have never been afraid of flying, I would still get butterflies at the thought of that big piece of metal- now I have more butterflies because it is a "different" world for us. What do you think should be remembered about September 11? We need to remember the tremendous loss not only to thousands of individuals, but also to us as a country. We need to remember the unselfish bravery of many who tried to save others. We have to remember that even though we live in the greatest country in the world there are still many that will come here to try to destroy our spirits. We must be more vigilant to all that goes on around us and committed to protecting our way of life. We must be sure that everyone knows we feel this way about our country and way of life. We must never forget the gravity of the incident, the loses we suffered, and the power of the American spirit. Have you flown an American flag since September 11? How has your feelings about the American flag changed? Yes. I don't think they have changed really, more that it has been brought to the forefront of my thoughts as opposed to a background of my everyday life. Even the mere thought of removing the phrase of "one nation under God" bothered me tremendously, and I know it would bother me more today than it would have prior to 9/11. Tell us your story: On September 10, 2001, I just finished working in the financial aid office at my school and my fianc?e and my son met me down here around 6 PM to go get some dinner. We decided on the Burger King across from the towers and across from century 21. That night I was up really really late which caused me to wake up two hours after I was suppose to. Normally I am at school between 8 and 8:30 but on this day I didn?t leave my house until after the first plane hit. I saw it on the TV but I was determined to get to school. I didn?t think it was anything serious. So, I went on with my daily routine. When I got my son to the babysitter, she told me that both towers were hit and I wouldn?t be able to get to school. Ignoring her, I just left desperately trying to find a way to get to Borough of Manhattan Community College located in Manhattan on Chambers and Greenwich which is about 5 blocks away from the towers. She kept saying, there is no way your going to get down there. I was in the south part of the Bronx near the 138th street bridge that runs over the Hudson River, I saw the smoke in the sky. It was a huge cloud of smoke and it was really frightening. I started to panic because all my co-workers and all my friends were down in that area. My fianc?e was also in that area. I tried to call him but I could not get through on the pay phone that I was using. There was so much traffic that people just started getting out of their cars and standing around looking up in the sky. A few minutes later, someone shouted, ?the Pentagon has just been hit!? I don?t remember how long I was there because at that moment I lost all concept of time. I was so scared. I tried reaching the school to see if all of my co-workers in the financial aid office had made it out. I couldn?t get in touch with anyone in Manhattan. So, I called my aunt and told her that I was okay and I never made it to school. She was so relieved because she was the reason that I went to bed so late. She said, ? I guess I can?t be sad for making you stay up so late. I saved your life.? (That morning I was suppose to go to the KB toy store at the bottom of the towers.) She told me that my fianc?e had called her and told her that he was stuck on West 14th street and to let me know he was okay. I finally gathered myself together and went to go get my son. While I was at the babysitter, she was getting hysterical because people in her family were missing. I finally left her house around 11:30 am and trying to get home was a huge task for me. I tried to catch a cab and no one wanted to pick me up if I wasn?t going to Manhattan. (How could anyone be so selfish at a time like this.)? All of the bridges were closed to traffic going into Manhattan. So, my son and I took the bus. It normally takes us 30 to 45 minutes that day it took us 2 hours. We still weren?t home yet. It took us another 45 minutes to get home. That day was so crazy for me however, in the Bronx where I live, so many people were shopping like nothing ever happened. As soon as I got home, my mother called me from California crying. She was saying how much she loves me and how worried she was about me. This tragedy brought a lot of families back together but us, as a city was still apart. For me the next three weeks were the hardest. I refused to go into Manhattan until it was time to go back to school. The first week or two, no one talked about my college. I didn?t hear when I was supposed to go back to school; I didn?t hear anything. All you heard about were the high schools and the elementary schools. I mean granted they are young people, but they didn?t suffer like B.M.C.C did. We lost one of our own buildings that was hit when one of the buildings fell. So now our main campus, which was only, equipped to hold 7,000 students now, holds 17,000 students daily. It hurt that our school didn?t get the attention that it should have gotten. When I finally found out that I go back to school on October 1,2001, I got really excited. I?ve always enjoyed school but this excitement was different. It was like being happy after a terrible storm. You know your life will never be the same but your happy that at least you can try to get back to normal. On October 1, I got off the train at Franklin Ave. in Manhattan and started walking towards school when I felt this huge darkness come over me. I started breathing hard. It wasn?t from the stuff in the air like the media wants you to believe, it was the fact that I?ve seen these two towers hovering over my school for two years. I never paid them that much attention but now that they were gone I could help but to be sad. I mean I never realized there was sun in lower Manhattan because the towers were so tall, it was our shade. It was our protector. Everyday after that coming to school was such a drag for me. It was emotionally draining. You try to cope with what?s going on but having to be down there everyday, I felt like one of the rescue workers. Completely exhausted. The school tried its best to accommodate us with help and with allowing a moment to express our feeling in class. But for many of us, that will be a day that lingers on our hearts and minds forever. I graduate this semester. And the only thing that I can think about is getting as far away from down here as possible. But that?s unlikely. Because wherever you go in NYC, you can still see were the towers should be. And then it will feel like you were there all over again. At the time of the attacks I was beiginning my junior year in college. It was a regular Tuesday I got up at 7:30 to get ready for my classes. At about 8 I sat down in the living room to watch Good Morning America as I do everyday. I will never forget what I saw. All I could see was smoke and at the bottom of teh screen it said New York City. I immediately called my dad to see what was going on and he told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center and they thought itwas an accident. As I was talking to my dad we were waching the same channel and I saw what I though was a replay of the plane hitting and I said "Oh My God Daddy, they are showing the reply." My father gasped and told me that wasn't a replay which I quickly understood because everyone on TV was screaming that another plane had hit. I had to get off teh phone and go to class and it still felt like something out of a movie until I got to class. When I walked in my professor had the TV on and I saw that the firts tower had collapsed, the I saw what I thought was metal falling from the builings until I realize that it was people jumping from the burning building. I began to weep with everyone else in class. I cannot believe this happened in our country where I have always felt safe. Now everytime I get on a plane I hold my breath and my chest hurts until I get off. I will never forget that day, I carry it and the images with me everyday and I doubt there will ever come a day in my life where I don't think about it and all of the innocent lives that were lost. We were going over some trig functions when all of a sudden Dr. Smith, our school principal, came over the P.A. system and announced a bit vaguely that there had been a plane crash in D.C. Then he just went off the P.A. after that short message and our whole class just sat there confused and silent for a few minutes. We had no idea how serious this crash was and most of us just dismissed it as an accident of only a few injuries and no important to anyone in our school. Some of the students in my class even laughed at his message because the way Dr. Smith sounded and the brevity of the seemingly pointless announcement. We didn?t know it had anything to do with the pentagon or the twin towers. Then the teachers would talk to one another and we began to find out more and more details of what happened. After that, my teacher turned on the T.V. and we all saw the plane crashing into the World Trade Center. That was all we did for the rest of the day. Tell us your story: Ever since I was a child, a road trip to visit family in north Jersey meant driving past the New York City skyline - a skyline of promise, strenghth, and pride. I can remember as the Twin Towers came into view the overwhelming feeling I felt knowing that right on the other side of the river resided a microcosm of life unparalleled to any other. Life resonated at a different pace; the city provided opportunity and employment for hundreds of thousands of people throughout the area, including my hometown. Not having Tuesday classes that semester, I slept in on September 11th, 2001. I was awakened by a frantic phone call from my mother at work, pressing me to turn on the television, because a plane had flown into World Trade Center Tower One. In a panic, we tried calling her fiance?, who worked in the city, as my friends tried to contact their fathers that also worked there. To our dismay, throughout the day, all of the phone lines in and out of the city were out of order. As my family and I watched the news, all of us in different regions of the state and country, we stared in disbelief at the destruction of the most symbolic structures of New York City. Shock permeated the air of our very existence. The void that the towers had once occupied immediately filled with fear, and a feeling of disbelief and disorientation. A black cloud of despair seemed to move in over our country. Then, as tears welled up in my eyes, I watched as two other planes went down, one in a field in Pennsylvania, and the other at the Pentagon. I took the time out to call loved ones in different areas of the country to make sure that they were ok, let them know that I was too, and most of all, (because no one knew what to expect next) to tell them that I loved them. I have never felt so much fear and love all at once. I called anyone I could think of to tell them that they resided forever in a special place in my heart. The following day, I took a trip to Jersey City to gape across the river at the gap in the sky where two becons of prosperity and hope had stood. In their place was a giant billow of smoke, stretching all the way to the Statue of Liberty. I sought closure to confirm my disbelief, and witnessed it that day, in the park. For the first time in my life, I didn't cry for only myself. I cried enough tears to fill an ocean. Following that short pilgrimage, I placed a flag on the antenna of my car, and often looked at it to give me a sense of hope for our country, and the months that would follow. Fortunately for my family and the families of my close friends, our loved ones returned home to us safely on September 11. However, over the following months, I was able to meet some very special people from my hometown who had lost loved ones. Their strength remains unparalleled to any strength that I have ever witnessed in my entire life. The sorrow that I feel for their losses will never be forgotten, but their perserverance and endurance provide proof of the strength of humankind, and that has taught me a valuable lesson of self-worth. Dance like no one is watching, and love as if you have never been hurt before, for you never know what tomorrow may bring. You see, September 11 provided a break in the pride that had once resided in the heart of every American citizen, which was one of the main objectives of the terrorists. However, what was not expected was the strength that has grown throughout our nation. The losses of September 11 will never be forgotten, for they are etched in our minds and hearts for all eternity. Now, in place of the smoke and fear that replaced the towers' existence permanently resides a strong sense of American pride and a strong desire to not compromise our hope, promise, and dreams. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember sitting in my Chemistry class and having the teacher ask if we had heard what had happened. I did not actually see the planes hit the buildings but we watched the towers fall over and over again as they showed the planes hitting the towers. There was never any announcement over the speaker to let everyone know what was going on. My principal did not want to have this interrupt our school day, which many of us were very upset about. Then finally an announcement came on, all the teachers had to turn off their TVS and no one was allowed to have them on. The power was cut to the TVs in the building about fifteen minutes later. Then the principal and vice principals walked around the rest of the day to make sure that none of the teachers were discussing the events of the day. All the students and most of the teachers were very upset about the way that the principal was handling the situation. We all thought we had a right to know what was going on. The principal said that we would know what was going on as soon as we got out of school, but for the time being we were to worry about class. Every other high school around us was watching the news and talking about why this was happening and who was doing it. We on the other had were told to figure it out ourselves when school was out. When I got home from school that day I immediately turned on the TV. The Twin Towers crashing to the ground was the only thing to be seen on every channel. I sat there for hours just watching it and figuring out all the pieces of the story. I could not believe what was happening and that people could be so evil that they would want to destroy so many people's lives. I remember that day like it was yesterday and wish that my school would have handled things differently. I think it would have meant a lot more to everyone in school that day to have watched it on the television and talked about why it was happening. Tell us your story: I was lying in bed listening to KTAR620AM, when Ned Foster, the news anchor, interrupted the program to report that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. I will never forget the tone of his voice. It had a mixture of incredulity, surprise, tinged with fear. I turned on the television in my bedroom and tuned into CNN and saw the gaping hole and flames coming out of the North Tower. I watched for a few minutes and then came the second explosion. Immediately, I went into the living room and turned on the television and watched, like the rest of the nation, in horror. My oldest daughter called me and then I called my younger daughter, whose husband was born in New York. Soon thereafter the Pentagon was struck and for the first time I felt total fear. I wanted to get my daughters and granddaughter and bring them to my home so I would know they were all safe. I cancelled my appointments at work and sat mesmerized and fearful watching and waiting for the latest bulletins. Then we heard about the crash in Pennsylvania. Both of my daughters had to go to work, so I later picked up my granddaughter, who was eight years old, and brought her to my home. We hung my American flag on the front of my house. I live near Luke Air Force Base and watched the fighter planes take off all day and heard them all night. Later we gathered as a family and prayed for the victims and for our country and for our leaders. Initially, I was full of irrational rage and vengeance and wanted to annihilate the entire middle east. I felt that rage for days until, at last, with a friend's arms around me I sobbed and sobbed. I want to always remember this attack---it was not a tragedy---it was an vicious, unprovoked, insane attack that brought tragedy to so many people. I want to remember my anger and resolve and commitment to live my life as fully as possible. I have resolved to heal any relationship wounds, live my life more fully, and use the gifts and talents I have been given to serve God and my fellow humans. God Bless the victims and their families. Tell us your story: I was listening to Good Morning America and I heard Diane Sawyer say,"We just heard that something has hit the World Trade Center. It may have been a plane". My thought was how could a pilot get that off track to hit such a visible building or that maybe there was engine failure. When the second plane hit, I knew this was something more than pilot error. Then the Pentagon was hit and the news said there was another plane near Camp David. Living so close to Washington, I became nervous about where this plane would hit. This plane was Flight 93. Thank the Lord the brave men and women on this flight did such a heroic and brave deed. They saved alot people that day. Then I watched in horror as the World Trade Center buildings began to fall. I knew how high these buildings were because I had gone to the top on a visit to New York a few years ago. I couldn't imagine being in one of them as they were falling. Finally, around 11:00 am the news reporters were saying that they thought all the hijacked planes were down. The attack was over, but the enormity of this horrific event was just beginning. As I write this the television is once again broadcasting all day coverage of the one year anniversary. All the memories are back, as if it happened yesterday. In a day our nation changed forever, but the one constant in our lives was the presence of God. Evil doers(President Bush called them)thought they would destroy us, but God saw to it that evil would not prevail. As a Christian, I know God will watch over and protect our country if we believe in Him. My faith in God and belief that Jesus is my Saviour have sustained me through this year. I know that what ever happens in our country from now on, that God is in control and that if I should die I will be with Him in heaven because I have asked Him to forgive me and be my Saviour. All the people who were in those buildings and on those planes are heroes to me. Because of them, we are fighting to keep our wonderful country free. Thank the Lord I live in the USA. I'm sitting in my apartment looking out the window which used to have a magnificent view of the World Trade Centers ... now all I see is just dark gray smoke overhanging all of lower Manhattan ... everything below 14th Street is a dead zone (I'm on 6th Street), as you all know, its a bizarre and surreal time in New York (but people have been incredible and inspiring) as I am sure it is everywhere else as well ... basically all is well though, and I thought I'd share my little eyewitness account to what you've been reading and watching on the t.v. David xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx 9/11/01 Friends, I pretty much saw this horror unfold throughout the morning with my own eyes ... I had just finished voting in the primary election we are having for Mayor, and was walking up 5th Street in the East Village when I saw the first plane screeching across the Manhattan skyline, very low and heading south. Now that was really unusual because planes never head south over Manhattan and never that low (they always head north for LaGuardia Airport) -- so I knew something was wrong and assumed that plane was going to crash somewhere, but a long ten seconds later I heard a far off "boom", but truthfully, I didn't completely associate that boom with that airplane because it wasn't all that loud, and there are plenty of construction type booms everyday here in New York City. I thought perhaps, if anything, the far off "boom" possibly meant that the plane had crashed on Staten Island. But as I headed for the subway on my way to work, on the corner of third avenue and 5th Street, I saw that huge, gaping and stunning hole in the first tower of the WTC. I stood there in disbelief talking with the large crowd which was quickly gathering. After 15 minutes or so, I walked back to my apartment (missing the second plane), turned on the t.v. and sat down at my desk which once had "a perfect view" of the World Trade Centers directly out of my bedroom window - it was then, while looking out the window, that I saw the first tower go down - it was fucking shocking! - I yelled out something in disbelief to my roommate who was in the other room watching it on his t.v. ... to see it in person and on t.v. at the same time was a very strange vantage point on history ... One bizarre note was that while I watching the tower collapse in front of me, the commentators on t.v. were talking about other things for at least a full thirty seconds before they even realized what had happened ...I started screaming at my set, "its gone", as if to get their attention ... After that, I went up to my roof, which has an incredible panoramic view of the entire city, and I stood in shock with a group of twenty or so, holding binoculars, watching in silence as the second tower came down ... it is truly unbelievable to see something of that magnitude implode -- Hollywood has gotten it right over the years, the effect of it seeing it live was just stunning ... the notable aspect of it in my mind was that it went down in "silence" from my vantage point of 2 miles away .... Afterwards, I went to the bank to get some cash and to go shopping for food ... We all thought we might be cut off from the outside world for god knows how long ... the grocery stores were jammed -- I made it home and finally got through on the phone to mom and dad in California ... I have been sitting here for hours now, watching out my window at the gaping hole now filled with a huge column of smoke as thousands are streaming up First Avenue, hopefully heading safely for home .... Emotionally, it was a very powerful and vivid event to witness ... I get shaky and near tears thinking of how many good people were killed today ... the picture of that plane tearing across the sky as it headed for the World Trade Center is now seared in my mind forever ... The streets here in NYC are packed with people, but I have not seen any panic, just grim acceptance ... even dealing with the long lines in the grocery store, people were being exceptional polite with each other which was a nice change of pace ... And I can't tell you what a beautiful day it is here in New York City!!! -- it is just so hard to reconcile the natural brilliance which is surrounding us with the horror which just occurred ... Going through my address book for this email, I realize I know so many folks here in New York who perhaps had friends and/or family in the downtown vicinity this morning. David xxxxxxxxx my first view of ground zero ... 9/20 Tonight, after work, my friend Barbara and I, went out for our monthly drink(s) after work thing ... There was too much to discuss, terrorism, war, our friend's recent wedding, office politics and the time and drinks just flew by ... After three glasses of red wine apiece, we decided to head down to Union Square on 14th Street where an impromptu resurrection of the Hippie movement has been in full flower for the last week or so commemorating the recent troubles (The park has been turned into an incredible site, where every night thousands of people have been gathering for music, peace, candles, and remembrance)... but as we were approaching the 14th Street Station, we changed our minds and decided we needed to head further south and take a look at "ground zero" for the first time ... We weren't sure what we would be able to see once there, if the authorities would let us see "it", how close we could get to "it" and how, whatever we saw, would make us feel. We were full of anticipation though, and also nervous about what it would be like ... We definitely had a feeling of excitement about our little world terrorism adventure coming up - so when the subway pulled up to the Fulton Street station, and the doors opened, we were unexpectedly surprised and shocked by what hit us - the stench of human death ... It was shocking and ugly smell and whatever excitement we had immediately dissapeared ... To actually smell dead people was an unfortunate first for me ... it was such an unexpected physical sense that within moments, we were not sure if we could stand the sensation of it longer than a few moments ... so we dashed out of the station and finally found our way, after a series of cordoned off stairwells, to an exit that brought us directly up to Maiden Lane and Broadway. Thank God we got to open air because as soon as we did, that horribly sweet smell basically went away. Again, we had no idea what we would be able see from street level, or how much of the scene would be cut off by the surrounding buildings or the police lines, but incredibly, once we were out on the street, we could basically see it all ... Immediately, on that first corner, we were confronted with what was left of two of the smaller World Trade Center buildings, 5 and 7. Their twisted but still rectangular shapes were still quite recognizable, but their contorted intestines were hanging out of them at bizarre and impossible angles ... In the dark of night, with the stark illumination of the intense work lights, and the smoke still pouring out of the base of all the rubble, it was an extraordinary sight to see ... We eventually moved down one block south, where the remains of the skeletal facade of the South Tower was still standing like a honeycombed gravestone piercing the ground ...In the background, through the dense cloud which occasionally turned surprisingly visible as the wind blew across the site, the illuminated towers of the basically untouched American Express Building stood in contrast to the "science fiction" exterior we were facing ... Another block down Broadway, we were faced with an even taller tower of rubble -- constantly I was awed by what man had built as a crowning achievement to human glory and ingenuity; and what man had then destroyed as a symbol of his hatred and intolerance … There was a large crane rising several stories above the scene which was spraying a strong thrust of water over the smoldering metal and compressed pit of twisted rubble ... Again, it seemed like a huge alien sculpture set down in the middle of post-apocalyptic modern America ... The single most vivid emotional truth that came out of the trip downtown for me was this … It was an absolute MIRACLE that so many other people were spared from certain death … In no way am I being facetious by saying this, but "Allah" was being very kind to America when he/she allowed this horror to happen the way it did … The scene of destruction was so absolute, complete and horrific that it seemed impossible that the entire financial district wasn't destroyed as well ... but when you are right there, I had this incredible sense that tens of thousands of other people had been protected by some power from almost certain destruction. Standing right next to and encircling the complete and utter destruction of the WTC were dozens of modern skyscrapers and smaller scaled buildings dating from the 40's (before and after) which were nestled together; and all of them were without any obvious scratches on them ... their windows were almost all intact, with just a thick coating of dust on the walls and store fronts (on which people had scrawled words and messages of love and hope) ... The damage was all so cleanly contained, that it is hard to comprehend the complete obliteration evident which was laid out before our eyes -- ESPECIALLY when you turned your head to the other side of Broadway and saw white twinkling lights set on a grouping of trees in a small public park swaying in the still summer-like breeze one block away from ground zero ... It was an odd combination of experiences to piece together, but I have to admit, the feeling I left "ground zero" with was a positive one ... The scene itself is frightening but it was also made so human by the obvious care of the rescue workers and the quiet and solemn crowds that were gathered there .... I felt much more strongly than before I came downtown, that the WTC must be eventually rebuilt in some form … Just placing a park or a memorial in its place would be a poor substitute for what I think needs to be which is something that should house important businesses and vibrant people. Perhaps, it will be a much safer world, by the time they build it ... Bin Laden did his best to destroy a symbol and all he got was a building ... My humble little opinion is that America has caused far more good in the world than bad, and that Osama's perversion of his religion, is marred by a fatal flaw of arrogance and superiority that I trust and hope has been fatally misplaced on his part ... Afterwards, we made our way up to Union Square on 14th Street (the beautiful experience of that place definitely needs another email to itself), but the impromptu humaness and energy that was gathered there was a powerful testament to the unity and love that this piece of history has brought to New York City and America ... So when i heard the pane hit the trade center it was shocking to me. My mom told me to turn on the news and it was right after the first plane hit. I sat in stunned silence, just shaking my head. My husband woke up and together, we both held hands and was just stunned. Then, the second plane hit. It felt like the world was coming to an end. I never experienced such a feeling of helplessness. Then, we heard about the Pentagon and Flight 93 and we just could not believe this was happening to us! He told me he wasn't supposed to come home till 9-11, but something kept telling him to go home now. Tell us your story: I had bought a computer only about a month before, and was in my den going through the day's e-mail when I began to see posts about "this terrible event on TV." So I went into the living room and turned on NBC. Everything had been pre-empted by then for live coverage. Both towers had been hit but were still standing. It took a while for me to get up to speed on what had occurred, but I was watching when the first one fell. My mother and I kept the TV on all that day and all evening, till 11 or 12. We even ate in front of it. We had *never* done that, not even during the four days after JFK's assassination. The next day as soon as we were awake it went on again and stayed on. We must have been glued to that set for at least three days. There wasn't much we could do to help, but we sent a bag of thick clean socks and a couple of cans of beef stew to the rescue workers when a collection truck set up in front of the downtown mall, and I called the ASPCA to ask what was being done for neighborhood animals. All through the first day I kept alternating between the living room and the den, where I was still online. Several of my groups set up roll calls--"Is everybody OK?"--and I responded to all of them. I didn't know anyone who was in the Towers, but I have a girlfriend who did, and I don't think she has been able to go back to NYC since the last funeral she attended. I have always been a strong patriot (during the Vietnam War I was a hawk), and I don't think that has changed. I display an American flag in the front window of my apartment (just a little one, but it's a flag), and I intend to keep it there until radical Islamic terrorism is utterly crushed. Yet I don't blame Muslims as a whole for what happened. I know the terrorists are a minority, a "lunatic fringe." I *do* think we might make greater strides against them if their own people would help us more. Occasionally I'll read about some new wrinkle in Homeland Security and be a bit disturbed, but none of it has really affected me directly, and I doubt it will. I haven't changed my lifestyle because I don't believe that my town is important enough to be targeted, and I don't travel, so the likelihood of my being involved in an attack seems very small. I don't claim to know whether the Bush response was the very best one, but I *do* think that only by bringing prosperity and democracy to the Middle East can we even begin to cut the legs out from under the terrorist movement, and I'm quite sure that the terrorists themselves understand nothing but violence. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I witnessed history at the Marlboro Middle School in Massachusetts. I had a normal school day. We had to go back to our homerooms from my science class for no reason. When we got back, my teacheer told us what happened. She turned on the television to watch the news and then realized she couldn't show it, so she turned it off. We sat at our desks for the rest of the day. We spent about an hour talking about whether or not we knew any people in New York. On the way home on the bus, some people were sad. Others were joking around, not knowing how serious it was. When I got off the bus, I went to my friends house because my Mom and Dad wee not home from work yet. When I got there, we turned on the television to see what was happening. We saw the news on almost every channel. Since September 11 2001 , my life has changed. Now I am more thankful for firefighters and policemen. I also realized how many people are willing to help other people.Now I am more aware that there are other countries that don't like us. If I see someone tring to do something wrong, now, I try to get someone to stop them. Thats where I was and how I felt on September 11, 2001. It was my wife, telling me to turn on the TV, that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. I did not think that much of it. I envisioned a small prop plane. I turned on the TV to get a look, just as I was did, the second plane hit. That was no prop plane, It was a commercial jet. What about the people in those planes, the towers? Soon after that, there was word of a plane hitting the Pentagon. That's when fear came over me. "What's next?" I thought. What do I do? I will remember that day forever.
