Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Fast asleep, my hotel phone rang. I answered it. My friend and my LEC President, Betsy Tettelbach, was on the other end. She said "turn on your TV." Grappling with the remote, I did as she said. Being her LEC Vice-President, I already knew how to follow her directions to a tee. I couldn't believe what was being conveyed over the airwaves. An airplane had gone into one of the World Trade Center towers. My God, I hope it wasn't one of our airplanes! Please don't let it be anyone I know. My God, all the people that have just died! What a horrible thing! Much more horrible than I could have ever imagined. How could this be happening? So many thoughts running through my head all at once, so many questions. I'm not a patient person, I wanted answers. That's when the second plane hit. The horror just got worse. I called my husband in Charlottesville, VA. He knew I wasn't flying, but it was still an event that had to be shared in some way with other people. My connection with him on the cell phone was not great. I was doing the window hug and twist. Being in this particular room in Washington DC kept my cell signal to a minimum so I had to try every way I could think of to keep the connection open. After speaking with him, conveying our disbelief and also our love, we hung up. And that's when we learned of the plane hitting the Pentagon. I had to call him back to let him know I was okay. I spoke with his supervisor who passed the word on. I decided to go to Betsy's room and watch the TV with her. I knew I was supposed to be getting ready for a meeting, but this was too much to handle alone. Plus I didn't know if the plans were still on. We were supposed to begin Day 1 of supermediation with the company today at the National Mediation Board. Our strike deadline was coming up fast and furious on Septemeber 15th. Now one of our planes could have been flown into the World Trade Centers, the Pentagon or the ground in Pennsylvania. My God, it was a possibility! How trivial the strike deadline seemed now. Our negotiating team sat together in Betsy's room glued to the television. We were shocked and horrified. As news came out of the flight humbers, relieved. It was not one of our airplanes. The co-workers that we are so close to did not perish in this horrible act of terrorism. But how were we going to take care of our members now? We still needed new work rules, pay rates and benefits. How would we support the mourning and at the same time rally the troops to fight for what they deserved. The situation was such an oxymoron. We felt horrible about everything and were totally deflated and defeated. The National Mediation Board decided to extend our strike deadline for one more week. It was hoped that both sides could regroup from the events of September 11th and come to the table to get this contract ironed out. It did happen. It's not a perfect contract, but it'll do considering all that everyone went through. We look forward to tackling the issues we had to let slip by the wayside in 2004. Tell us your story: melissa biller emergency room nurse i work the swing shift so i was sound asleep when the phone rang. i normally ignore it but for some reason i reached over on the 1st ring and answered it. it was my mother who lives just near me and the first thing she said was "turn on the tv right now". through sleepy eyes i searched for the remote and flicked on the tv. at that same moment my mother with a tearful voice said "a commercial plane hit the world trade center!". my first responce was "where is hank?!". hank is my brother who is a pilot for delta-asa. my mother said "he just landed in atlanta...i just got a call from him saying that he was all right". "thank god" i said and at that same moment with my eye on the tv i watched in horror as the second plane hit the other tower. my heart sunk to my stomach and for several minutes my mother and i sat speechless on the phone. finally i said "they may need me at work early so i'm gonna get in the shower". "okay" she responded and we hung up. there was nothing more to say! without words in those few minutes we had had one of those mother-daughter wordless conversations filled with many emotions. i went to work and when i arrived there was coas as usual, but there were also hugs and moments shared as only emergency staff can fully understand....though these were more profound than anything that we had ever gone through together. the day was busy and long since we live near the largest military base in the u.s. and with everyone on high alert thing were tense. the tv's ran all day on the same news channel, the patients were more subdued than usual, and everyone spoke volumes with just a look or a touch....for that one day changed everything and everyone forever! suddenly our own petty needs or grievences weren't so important, and all we could do was mourn and pray. since that time things have kinda gone back to normal...people complaining, re-focusing on work and daily life, road rage, and movies lines, and all the stuff that we think is so very important at the time. but, i will remember as will my children for as long as we live the day the world stood still and quiet and were all one people in love and pray. During my 3rd block class the principal came on the intercom and reported that New York and the Pentagon was under terrorist attacks. The class was stunned. Tell us your story: On September 11,2001, I was secure, comfortable, without grief, needing no help, just ensconced in the daily routine of living, with my daughter Alisa. And then, within a short span of time, my life changed. Suddenly no longer secure or comfortable, I WAS grief and in need of help; and feeling utterly helpless. As the fog of incredulous, painful magnitude lifted, that day as well as the ensuing days, brought about an amazing realization. While I cannot change events, I can become security for my neighbor while I comfort him. I can be there in the grief of others and help in any way possible - all this while being ensconced in the daily routine of living. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I suppose the strangest thing about 9/11 is how I was told. I was in class when the planes actually struck. My teacher at the time was one of those teachers that hated if Cell Phones were on during class, so, we had no real link to the outside world, outside of that classroom. I went in late, I imagine, and fell asleep during the class, figuring the day would be no more exciting on some random weekday then it was any other random weekday. I left the class with the knowledge that I had another one later on that day, and so, I was headed home for a power nap before my second class. At the time, I was on decent, but strained terms with one of my roomates, and it was she who I ran into on the way to my nap. She knew I'd been up almost all night doing homework, and so, when she told me that someone had flown a plane into the World Trade Centers, and it was all over the news, I automatically assumed that she was lying to me in order to get me all hyped up. (She did strange things like that.) I gave her some sort of automatic, tired responce, and as a retort, she just gave me the news channel number that she had been watching. So, it was on that note that I went home, and turned on the TV, just to see if she was in fact right, and it was then, that I watched the first tower burn to the ground. I think for a moment, I was in some sort of shock. Not because I'd ever been to the World Trade Centers, or knew anyone who worked at the World Trade Centers, but just because of the wildly askew versian of reality that this presented. It was like watching an action movie, where someone like Bruce Willis had just had to try and save the American way of life. Planes that took down whole skyscrapers of that magnitude in one fell swoop just weren't real. What else could I do? I woke up my other two roomates, and did the only other thing I could thing of... made a pot of coffee. That seems to be the thing people do the most when they have nothing else to do, make a pot of coffee. So there I sat, with my little Boston mug (it was the closest thing I had to an I "heart" NY mug, so I used it), and I watched as the towers fell, and the journalists and experts speculated, and the damage was calculated, all in technicolor right before my very eyes. Once everything was said and done, both towers had fallen, and the reruns of the damage was being shown, I left my apartment, and went to be around people, to prove that the people that I knew and loved hadn't been taken in any stray disasters. Those people, some I knew, most I didn't, were gathered in the Student Union, and there was a rallying group of new patriots that decided to give blood. They needed cars, and people, and someone would give you a ride if you wanted to go. So I went. It seemed like a good idea, what else was I going to do? Fly to New York and move the wreckage? Even if I could help there, would the planes even take me? The short answer was no. So I gave blood. There were 7 or 8 of us, as I recall. And we waited from 2 in the afternoon, after treating ourselves to a hearty lunch from BK, to 10 at night. We left once to go get toys from the 711 near by, just for something to do, a pack of cards and one of those little magnetic checker sets. When we came back, the parking lot was being patrolled by cops, and no one else was being allowed in, so we parked across the street, and walked over. I was the last to give blood that day. They only took me because I didn't have a car, and I'd been waiting for 8 hours. I hadn't eaten much in the time between, so I ended up passing out right after they finished taking what they needed. We passed jokes about how at least I'd waited until the bag was filled... The boy who had driven me to the bloodbank drove me home, I don't remember his name, and I don't think I could identify him by sight. He had to help me to the car because I was still a little woozy. He kept asking me if I was okay, and I remember feeling a bit better, even if the world was a few degrees off center. I had done what I could. I was fine. Later on, I learned something that disgusted me. In the time that my friends (new and old) and I were in the Bloodbank, someone had called in a phony bomb threat, that was the reason the cops had been everywhere. They hadn't said sooner because they didn't want to start a panic. Confidentially, I didn't think that any one of us would have left, if even just to be defiant about the whole situation. "Sure, blow us up, we'll die as patriotic citizens damnit." Eat that, Phantom Bombers. And a year passed, and here I am now. Almost exactly a year later from when I rallied and left with the group to go give blood. I think I'm going to make myself a pot of coffee, or take myself out to BK. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My boyfriend called me early that morning (9/11) and told me that there had been an attack on the United States. I was on my way to work, but switched on the TV. My first thoughts were that he had been wrong. It surely must have been a terrible accident instead. Then, I stood like a deer staring into the headlights of an oncoming car as I watched the twin towers fall to the ground on the screen of my television. My heart raced as I thought and worried about our business partners at the Amex offices in the area. Did our friends escape? Or were they trapped in the rubble with the brave firemen who had just climbed the steps of death. Tears streaked my cheeks. "How could this happen?" I kept repeating to myself. It was just so unbelivable, so overwhelming. Later, the pain would come, a pain that continued to reside inside of me this past year. I discovered that 12 of our employees died in the attack. One of these individuals was a kind woman to whom I'd spoken to many times and worked with over the telephone. I'd suddenly felt a piercing in my heart and knew that I would never forget her. Over the past year, I also heard the tales and stories of many other co-workers who had narrowly escaped from death. And these were the stories that I'd heard first-hand. Many more were told by all the families who had lost their loved ones. I grieved for them all. A year later, I don't ask how this could happen. I know how this happened. The United States, a kind nation, that admits so many diverse peoples of the world, the noble nation that offers freedom and liberty for all who enter, the nation that is richest in the world only through the hard work and contributions of her people, that nation was attacked from within. We were attacked by terrorists who never sought our gifts to enjoy, who never sought to pursue a life full of opportunities. We were attacked in contrast by those who suppressed the rights of others. I've seen and heard so much about the beliefs of these Arab nations who condemn us and I wonder why we continue to allow these individuals to enter our country. Especially in times of terror as all nations face today, why do we continue to let these warmongers enter our country. I believe only those who believe in our way of life, those who flee from ferocious despots, those seeking freedom, including religious freedom, those who come to America to share the good life, only these should be able to enter and join the melting pot of a freedom loving peoples. The people who have joined the terrorist organizations do not believe in this freedom. Therefore, deport those who advocate this abomination and never allow anyone to come to our land who does not share our beliefs in freedom. I was wearing a set of earphones and was watching is people rushed into academic buildings. Being a freshman college student, I thought this was normal. A few minutes later I learned that September 11 would be anything but a normal day. I walked into my college's Communications Building and looked at the sight of both Twin Towers burning. A started to ask questions, but no one knew what was happening. I went down the hall to my classroom, and found my class watching coverage of the WTC. My teacher then shut the tv off stating that if anything important were to happen someone would let us know. That was at 9:25 in the morning. As class ended at 10:45 we learned of the attack on the Pentagon, the plane crash in Western PA, the collapse of the Twin Towers, and (erroneously) of car bombs going off at the State Department in Washington. All through the day, people walked around in stunned silence. What had been an upbeat, happy college campus only a day before was now a scared part of America. Tell us your story: On my last day of vacation, I was preparing to regroup after my morning ritual, taking my son to school and planning the remainder of my day, then the most unforgettable sight occurred before my eyes. With notepad in hand, sitting in front of the TV, I watched what I thought were the last minutes of the Early Show with Bryant Gumbel. Suddenly, I noticed Bryant appear startled and announced that there was breaking news. The next thing I saw was the smoke, fire and the bulletin. As they began to recant what had occurred, video showed another plane heading toward a building. The reports began coming in sporadic and everyone was repeating the information over again. My initial thought was that a pilot trainee had possibly gone off course and this was just a tragic accident. As the morning unfolded, we knew this was not the case. The worst fear developed in my stomach as it did when I heard the news about President Kennedy and Dr. King. Is this really happening? But a worse fear surfaced as I wondered if we were under attack. It has been one year, and somehow as we recant the stories of the heroes, survivors and the victims, I still wonder, how did this happen? No amount of words can ever describe the emotions that must envelope us all as we relive this horrible tragedy and try to offer solace to our nation. 'One Nation Under God' is the only way we will be able to recover from this travesty and try to move ahead. Hopefully we can embrace these words and live as such. As I was in the waiting area I heard on the radio that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. I thought to myself, "What idiot pilot couldn't see the tower?" Minutes later I heard the news about the second plane and by then there was live air shots on the television above my head. I remember the news casters voices, trying ever so hard to stay composed. The rest of the news cast was a blur to me because by the time my car was finished, I had a pit in the bottom of my stomach. I drove all the way home paying close attention to other drives faces and reactions, as I was sure they were hearing the same news that I was. I spent the next 7 hours in front of the television set crying uncontrollably. I felt sick. I honestly couldn't believe that I had just seen that happen. My children were at school that day and I was wondering if they would know anything was wrong. Apparently the school had a little assembly because as hard as the teachers tried to not show concern or sadness, it was apparent to lots of the children that there was something wrong. I spent an hour after they were home wondering what I was suppose to say to them since I couldn't even understand or explain it to myself. When I finally sat down with them, my heart just sank. I thought, "Look at what I have been forced to do." I will forever remember the first day that my youngest son, age 7, heard the plane overhead after the attack. He crouched down, shielded his hands over his head and cried, "No, not us. Please don't hurt us." Then the following day my oldest son, aged 9, came home and was very proud to tell me that his school had decided to join in to collect money for the Afganistan children. I thought to myself, "through tradegy, this child has learned compassion and empathy" - at age 9. I will never forget listening, seeing and hearing all of the reports, broadcasts and interviews about the attack and knowing that I had a newfound respect for America and I was proud to be on this soil. The thirteenth of September, 2001, a gruop of City of Miami Police officers recieved permission to go an aid the New York Police Department in New York City. They drove straight thru for twenty four hours to New York and reported to the command center and where sent to Precinct 6. There they filled in with miscellaneous police duties as to free up NYPD personnel to look for their dead and to go home and rest and return to duty rested. Miami police retire Frank Arostegui donated an American flag and had all the retiree's at this year convention sign it. This was on the 6th, 7th, and 8th of September 2002. On the ninth he and his wife flew to New York City and on the tenth of September, he presented the flag to Lt. Cunningham of the 6th Precinct in Manhattan. In the morning I danced around to "I am the Walrus" by the Beatles to get me psyched up for play auditions I had after school. My first hour class, American Lit, was the usual. I think we took notes on Christopher Columbus. I didn't find out about the terrorist attacks until the end of second hour. I was sitting in math, writing poems and drawing a picture of Paul McCartney- I was really bored as the material we were learning was very easy- when another teacher came into the room and asked to speak to Mr. Saros. They went out in the hall for a minute and he came back and turned on the TV to CNN. I didn't really understand what had happened at first, although I did write in my notebook "Holy fuck the World Trade Center was attacked!" It didn't seem like a big deal at the time... The towers seemed pretty stable. I began to panic more as I talked to my friends, and some of them were talking about how the Empire State Building and the White House were destryoed, too. As the day progressed, I began to realize more and more what was going on. It was impossible to escape from it. In all my other classes, we did nothing but watch the TV, except for Chemistry, in which we had to take a test first. I thought I failed the test because I couldn't concentrate on it. People's opinions on it really screwed me up. A girl in my government class was convinced that nuclear weapons would have to be used to resolve this issue, and that got me worried as hell. I called my mother during lunch, just for like support or comfort I guess, and instantly started crying. It was pretty embarassing. I decided to go to play auditions a different day and went home. My brother and step-mother didn't really help me calm my fears; in fact I think they intensified them. I started writing in my diary and looked down at my doggie who sat beside me, and kept thinking how terribly strange it was that she had no idea what was going on. My fear of war, and instantaneous patriotism for the attacks on 9-11 only lasted a couple of weeks. Instead of focusing on how this had hurt our nation, I began to take a like more worldly view on things. Not to be disrespectful, but I really don't think this is that big of a deal. It's disgusting that we let the Tali-ban rule Afghanistan in the first place, and didn't do anything to stop it until they hurt us. Besides, thousands- actually probably a million or more- innocent people from all over the world die needlessly everyday, so in the big scope of things, this was just a tragedy within a catastrophe. As always, I was running a little behind and became annoyed when the telephone rang knowing it would be my mother asking some trivial question. As soon as I answer the phone, my mom tells me to turn on the TV to a local news station and that a building in New York was just attacked. Grapping the remote and watching the scene unfold before my eyes, I stood stunned unable to believe my eyes thinking this could not be happening. My mom and I stayed on the phone together listening to the deathly silence on the other end of the line with an occasional gasp of disbelief. You see, 9/11 was the day we feared before it ever got here. It was the day our 9-month-old son, Colin Clouse, was scheduled for reconstructive open-heart surgery to correct a rare combination of Pentalogy of Fallot with pulmonary artresia and a common AV valve. There was no guarantee that when we handed him to the doctors at 8:30 EST that we would ever see him alive again. While the rest of world was in their routine, ours was as rare of a day as we will ever experience. 15 minutes after we handed him to the doctors, the first plane hit the WTC. For the next 6 hours, while our son lay on an operating table on a heart-lung machine and a wonderful surgeon performing an incredible feat, we watched in horror as thousands of people lost their lives and their family's lives changed forever. When it was all over, thousands who had started the day in routine fashion had their lives suddenly taken from them in a most horrible way. But for us, the son we did not expect to see again was handed back to us with a full repair and a chance to live a normal life. We do not understand why so many innocent people lost their lives that day and why Colin was spared. We can only pray for the victims and hope that they were as prepared to meet God as we were to send our son to Him. My sales rep. called me from Florida hey did you hear the news? A small plane hit the World Trade Center. No way I said. Then my contractor showed up and confirmed the news. It was a beautiful day, a day you knew you wouldnt see again until after a long winter. Not a cloud in the sky, clean air, perfect for short sleeves. I had to see for myself. I drove to the top of my hill, a hill I had been driving for 22 years, where I had clearly seen the twin towers that morning when I drove my son to school. Sure enough the smoke was rising from the WTC. Staining that crystal blue sky. I turned around and retuned home. Still in shock from what I had just witnessed. I did the only thing I knew I should. Went upstairs gathered my uniform, vest and weapon. We were sure to get the call. Packed the car tuned in the radio and went to work. We were all in shock and dying for information. With the Internet down at the office and telephone service weak. Our only solution was to make an antenna for a TV we had in the training room. We got a Spanish news station and one of the guys was translating. One of the guys I work with was at a sales meeting in San Francisco (a meeting I was supposed to attend traveling on flight 93); he called me for the scoop. I told him what I knew and he quickly decided to drive back. A drive that would take him nearly 50 hours. I got the call at 1030. The City Of Yonkers was closing its offices and activating its entire police force including the Auxiliary Police. I got my gear from the car and got dressed. We had to report to the 1st pct. for our assignments. The place was in lockdown, we were at war, and I had never seen so much blue nor such emotion. We were sent to patrol the train stations within the city limits. No radios could be spared so we exchanged Cell Numbers and hoped for the best. We used our private cars and tried to help as best as we could. We all wanted to be in the middle of things, help with the rescue, but we did what was needed to help our fellow Americans. I just hope that seeing a uniformed officer waiting at the station was a comfort to the commuters trekking home from NYC that night. I like to think that it was our day to serve, a day we trained for our whole lives. We had 100% turnout that day. Listening to the news added to the tension. I was so happy to be home that night. But the streets of Yonkers were eerily silent. I think we were all inside watching CNN and waiting for more bad news. Two weeks later I was back on a plane to Atlanta, two middle-easterners seated in front of me. I looked at the guy next to me and we gave the nod to each other, saying we could do whatever had to be done. Needless to say they didnt move the entire flight. I always felt bad about that; it was pretty unfair to stereotype them like that. But that was the feeling in NY after that day. Working in Atlanta I felt like they were so disconnected from the events and emotions of NYC. This feeling carried across the country wherever I went. Looking back I know it was me, feeling sorry that I couldnt have done more. I moved my family to Florida 6 months later, I travel to NY every 6 weeks and I still cant get used to the changed skyline as you drive from Newark airport. I was leaving the supermarket the other day and there was a Veteran selling poppies, he had a bunch of pins on his vest from his travels and from different Veteran activities. I bought a poppy for my son and we walked to the car. I had a NYPD 911 flag pin in the glove box, so I walked back and offered it to him. He was surprised and gladly accepted it and proudly added it to his collection, I could see a tear forming in his eye. I cry whenever I see the images of that day. My dad was pounding on my door to get up because I had forgotten to set my alarm the night before. So I woke up quickly got dressed and went to school. I was one of the people with this lunch period. anyways it was during lunch that I had first heard about it. My friend Alex walked up to our table and told us that the Wtc had been hit by an airplane. My friends and I thought he was joking and proceeded to make jokes about it. All the way there and back we saw hundreds of people outside for the candlelight vigil. It was amazing! during halftime we played some patriotic music. It's amazing how this united people in a way That I didn't think was possible. This event has truly changed my life. It revealed to me the good in people. I was in my office on Sept 11, when my secretary heard about a plane crashing into the WTC. We all stood around her little radio, transfixed not knowing what was about to happen. All of a sudden a second plane hit and then we knew that this was not an accident. Within that first hour, parents began streaming into the school office to pick up their children, parents who had spouses working in the WTC, relatives who came to get the kids whose parents were working in the WTC, and also parents who just wanted to have their children close to them. I began to run around the school, picking up the children for their parents. We had some children who were trying to reach their parent who was working in the WTC. They were panicked, and unable to reach anyone. It was frightening..... we knew history was in the making, we felt helpless. When school ended that day, I went down to the water and looking across the Hudson, and saw the huge hole in the skyline and the smoke pouring out of the hole. My heart was broken, and is still aching for what we suffered. We will never forget. And yes, three children in our school lost their father. She was very upset and worried so I asked her to come home for a few days since her husband was on duty at the Pentagon.
