Tell us your story: I got to work and as I was entering the school someone said that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. At first, as most people did, I believed it was a small plane that had engine trouble and that it was a freak accident. I went out to my car and turned on the radio, with a few other employees standing around the open driver side door listening as well. Our jaws dropped as we heard the events unfolding. A second plane into the second tower, a plane into the Pentagon, a plane down in PA, the first tower coming down, the second tower coming down, other buildings coming down. All of the speculation and flase reports about other government buildings being offered and retracted. All I could think about were my fiancee and my brother and tried to make calls to their offices and cell phones with no avail. No calls were going through. I called home to see if there were any messages and my Fiancee picked up the phone. The bus into Manhatten via the Lincoln Tunnel had been turned around and she saw from a distance the first tower come down. I called my parents and found out my brother was okay and making it back over the river on the Ferry. Next we heard from our friends who worked at the tip of Manhatten and were covered in debree but had made it over to NJ where they were stuck and had to spend the night in hotel rooms. One former employee of mine worked at 7 World Trade center and was on the steps walking into work when the first plane hit. Needless to say he decided to take the day off... An old friend of mine worked in 1 World Trade Center and I looked her up on the internet and found out she survived. Another friend had made the long 6 or 7 mile exodus all the way up to and across the George Washington Bridge. At this point I hadn't seen any of the images on TV and everything that had transpired were only images conjured up in my imagination. I left work a little early and to my horror, the images on TV were worse than my imagination had conjured up. The conflict between the gratefulness that my loved ones were safe and the thousands of lives definitely lost in this terrorist attack confused me. In the days after we heard about cousins of friends, friends of friends, etc., who had perished. It took a week before it really setlled in that the World Trade Center Towers were no more. Then came the anger and survivor guilt. The incredibly proud feeling that the crew of the plane that went down in PA had taken over the plane and sacrificed themselves to save countless others. The Patriotism welled up. I hate to think that it took a tragedy such as this one to bring out the dormant patriotism in all of us, but that is what happened. I was watching a show on CNN last night and saw images I hadn't seen then, because I couldn't watch it on TV any longer at the time. It brought back everything. I wish there were an internet site such as this one after the Holocaust to document the events of that tragedy as you are doing today. We must never forget! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was w/friends of mine, and we were getting off the escalator from the PATH train. All of the sudden people started running in our direction. We didn't know why or anyrthing. So we started running. At first I thought someone had a gun or something. I wasn't sure if I should go up to my office which was in WTC 2 88th floor. I decided not to, and just get outside. I saw my one friend and we just ran. I ran to my boyfriends office down on Broad St. and luckily, he was getting off the elevator when I walked in his building. My boyfriend, friend, and I walked to the nearest payphone to call our moms, and let them know we were all together and we were ok. From there we were going to walk the FDR to the BKLYN Bridge, but that's when we heard this sonic "BOOM!" - It was 2 WTC collapsing. Of course at the time we didn't know it, but all I knew was I was NOT walking across any bridge after hearing that noise. so we turned around and walked towards uptown. We met my bf's brother and went to eat/drink something. With no where else to go we decided to try to head back towards the Staten Island Ferry, to get to his house. We did just that. And we got home safe and sound. I just think that if I would have went upstairs, I may have never come back down. I don't know. THat was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me, and I thank god I am alive everyday. For those who lost loved ones, you are in my prayers. God Bless! Tell us your story: The Day the world Stood Still In Time By Kathy Bruni Spring , Texas I had just Droped off my son at school and had come home when the phone rang, I answered it and it was my Husband. He had asked me if I had the TV on and I said no why? He said that you might want to turn it on , because the World Trade Centers had been hit by Planes, at the time I told him I am sure that you didn't hear the news right , so I turned on the TV and was so shocked by what I saw that I fell to the floor of my house in Disbelief. Then the news started telling us what had realy happened , that Terrorise had Hyjacked 3 Planes and that a fourth was being hyjacked , I thought to myself how can this be ? Then before I could think clearly the World Trade Centers come crashing down on TV, I just couldn't get up off the floor. Then I thought what about my kids , I started to call their schools and then another surrpise came on the TV , Flight 93 had flown its self in to the growned. Then they said that people had gottin phone calls from their loved one telling them good bye for the last time. I thought O my god the people on those Planes! They had just hit the World Trade Centers or one of the other buildings. Words just can't descibe the fear of the not knowing what to do next. I got in my car and rushed to the schools in fear that because of where we live I may not seem kids again. I couldn't hold back the tears on my face, they asked me what was wrong and I told them . They said that they too where scared . When we got home they just sat in frount of the TV and they too just couldn't beleive what they where seening on TV. Then the next day the TV was saying they where trying to find people and all they could fing was body parts. The fear we all have and had on that terrible day of set 11, 2001 will for ever be burned in our minds and the minds of those who lost a love one or those who lost their lives.The Courage , Leadership , Spirt , Individual Dignity, Humanity and Heroism that these people showed on the plane and at grown zero will be in the memories of us all.Always Remeber what these people did to help keep our world safe and to keep Freedom Free for all who are left behind. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, I woke up and got ready like any other day, not knowing that the events that would occur only a few precious hours later would change my life forever. I was a member of a generation that had never experieced war. Never fearing of an attack or the lose of a loved one. I was one that thought nothing was ever going to happen to our country. What was in store for me that September morning would crash all that I believed in. I was sitting in my second hour class, Civics, listening to our teacher lecture us on govenrnment jobs. One of the ironic topics during that morning's discussion was one on how the government job was to protect us. During the hour I left to retrieve a worksheet that I had forgotten in my locker. On my way back to class, I walked past a office with all of its members eyes transfixed on a television screen. I had the oddest feeling watching them stare up at the television. My heart just sank with nothing there to catch it. Then I remember thinking to myself, I hope this is nothing like Pearl Harbor. I have never been the pychic type, but at that moment I somehow knew that something bad had happened before I was offically informed of it. The thoughts quickly left my mind as I continued my walk back to class. When arriving to my class the teacher had turned on the television set. Every single eye was glued on the screen watching the unbelivalbe footage scroll bye. Not a word escaped the mouth of any member of my class. It was one of those things that happens that takes your body a while to digest the information. At first I was in denial, how could this happen to us, America. We were unbreakable until the enemy found a small rip in our safety net. I no longer had that feeling of security, it was torn away when planes hit their targets. Our econonmy changed. Many lost loved ones, jobs, money and so much more. I believe the American people have grown closer together after this tragidy, but yet many have grown further apart. I believe that everything happens for a reason. All you have to do is put your trust in God's hands and he will protect you. Tell us your story: I remember semptember 11th like it was yesterday,i work for a major cinema chain in england and i couldn't belive how quiet it was for a day which normally would have been busy,i remember our administrator coming from her office and telling us a plane had hit the twin towers,upon hearing this i didn't feel much worry as i thought a fairly new structure would stay up and be evactuated with minimum loss i also thought this must have been an accident! How wrong i was.For some reason out of curisoty i think i took my break from work to watch the news, about ten mins in to my break i saw the second plane hit,my head spun and i immediatly felt sick taking a second look at the t.v to make sure i just seen what i thought i had just seen or that my imagination had run wild,all i could remember thinking was they wont fall they cant fall and just thinking whats next i felt like i was watching a scene from independence day after i found out about the pentagon and the 4th plane i just felt scared as where i work is a major shopping centre and very near manchester airport so whoever was behind this if england was also a target i would be in a very easy target.The funny thing is although i went on my break i never went back to work that day i just stayed in the staff room thinking i hope its ok i hope everyone got out in time(by this time both towers had fell)when i finished my shift i phoned an ex girlfriend just to see if she was ok and going home i remeber i being so eerily quiet like the whole poplation of england was somewhere else but where i was.i got on the bus on my way home and i was the only one on it quite a rarity at 5 oclock i just got home then and wacthed the news seeing how brave the emergency services was really made me think how strong the human will must be just to keep going against an impossible task,To finish i just want to say everyone in england is behind you and i give you all the love in the world i can't really say why i'm writing this so long after the event i just read some of the transcripts of the victims and it just made me feel helpless like i wish i could have helped in some or any way just to get the people out of the towers in time. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was working for a Temp agency and I was assigned to work for "Eron" for 3 weeks as an administrative assistant. I was on my way to work about 7:30am. As I was driving to work which was located in Hinsdale, IL just about 30 minutes from where I live, I decided to turn on the radio to listen to some music. Flipping thru the channels to find a Christian station, at that time, I believe it was alittle after 8:00am, I heard the DJ ManCow from Q101FM annouce that one of the twin towers were just struck by an airplain, and then all of a sudden he yelled out again, "Oh my God!, folks another plain just hit the second tower!". I was puzzled just as everyone else was driving down the street that morning. The traffic completely stopped and paused for a moment or two. No one was moving, and everyone just looked at eachother with confusion and fear in their faces. Finally as the traffic began to move once again, I finally reached my destination and came into work and everyone was focused on the TV watching the news and the events of what had just happened. We were all told to leave home for the rest of that day. As I was driving back home, it seemed as though the world had just stopped. It was very quiet that day. I was glued to the TV for the rest of the day and evening, and gathered with my neighbors outside in front of our apartment building talking with one another about the tragedy. I was in shocked that whole day. It was just so hard to beleive that this happened in our country, especially in New York! I thought alot about my family in Wisconson and in Croatia. Later on that day, I called my parents who live in Wissonsin, and then called the rest of my family who live in Croatia just so that I can hear their voices. I came from Croatia to the United States when I was about 8yrs old. I feel very fortunate and greatful that I live here in the United States, and that I have many opportunites and freedom. I speak 4 other languages besides learning English when I came here to the US. I was facinated by the many different cultures and people that lived here in the United States. That is probubly why I chose to live in Chicago for the rest of my life. I believe that this country has given many people their dreams and a life full of hope, education, and opportunites. I feel very blessed to be here. When Croatia and Serbia was at war in 1991/92, I felt sorrow and pain for both sides. Loosing my cousin in that war devistated our family. It was hard for me to imagine what war could be like when I was not living their anymore. All I could do is pray. Pray that God would touch everyone in their hearts and keep peace with one another. We are all "human". We are all "living people" who breath the same air to stay alive each day that passes until it is our time to leave this precious earth. I never thought that such evil could try to distroy our freedom here in the United States. The word is "try" but evil has not succeeded. We have become better Americans and we have come together in "Unity" no matter who we are or where we came from! We all need to stay strong for one another and continue to live ours lives for the sake of those wo have lost theirs. I will never forget the day of 09/11/2001, it will always be in my heart. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in bed when the planes hit. I was woken up by my frantic mother and we ran over to my grandma's apartment. I saw the image on the TV screen, and ran to get dressed and grabed my camera, police scanner and walkman. I clipped everything on my belt and ran down to the pier. There were few people there, it was just a bit after 9. I could see the smoking towers as soon as I hit Shore Road. As soon as I got on the pier, I began snapping pics. I made my way to the middle and just looked at the island, the smoke rising over Brooklyn towards Dyker Heights. I had 770 AM going on in one ear, and the police scanner by the other. I'm watching and listening to the news and info coming in. I hear about the Pentagon, then Pennsylvania, then even the false attacks that were broadcast. Then it happened. Tower 2 fell. The dust rose and enveloped the entire island. It looked just like when the space shuttle would be taking off. All I could do was watch and take pictures. Emergency services were saying how they had difficulty getting through, now within a dust cloud. On the pier, tension was mounting as the typical loud-mouths you'd expect were voicing their hatred for Arabs. But it was contained, for the most part. Then went Tower 1. It was a shock, no one expected those two to fall. They've been up for too long. My first thoughts were of friends that attended nearby Pace University. Then of another at BMCC, a school I decided to attend in the Spring for a rest during the winter. What seemed like an eternity later, the NYPD came down and ushered us away, closing off the pier for what would be the next two weeks. I quickly went home and got online as best I could to check on people. My best friend, one of the onesfrom Pace, phoned me as soon as I walked in. Luckily, he had night classes that day. My aunt and uncle in Florida had sent an EM to see if we were alright. And another friend came on and IMed me, worried that I may've done something stupid like run across the Brooklyn Bridge to the WTC. (She wasn't far from the truth, had I attended BMCC earlier, I'd've been there. I know 'cause I wanted to be there.) The only thing left to do was sit and watch the 24 hour news about the incident. That is till I got a call from my job at the supermarket up the block. They had shut down early for the day, and wanted me to do something. I needed the distraction, so I went in, but I took my radio with me. I was in the basement, cutting UPCs off outdated dairy products for credit, the radio playing KTU's live news feed coverage, interrupted every so often by the unusually somber voice of morning DJ Goumba Johnny. The store had opened, a few cashiers and a bookkeeper coming in. The bookkeeper was my other friend from Pace, who told me that her and her boyfriend were caught in the dust explosion while running uptown. She had seen it all, and it was disturbing. After work, my father was stuck at his job, being he's part of the Port Authority, so we hadn't seen him in a couple of days. Days we spent watching the news and listening to the radio. You can still see the effects of the attacks. As I write this now, I see ou the window crews cleaning up debris and hauling it away on barges. December 7th, 1941 was a day of infamy. He tried to call hie gielfriend and my nephew at work and the cell phones would not work. It wasn't anything unique and different at first because we always hear about plane crashes. Tell us your story: It was about 4:00 in the afternoon on September 11 when a portion of our architecture study abroad group was en route by subway to visit an architecture firm in Berlin when the first plane must have hit the World Trade Center. When we arrived at the firm in Berlin's west side, they opened the door and asked "Have you heard yet?". The group of about 6 of us were confused, so they sat us down, got tea, and told us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At first we thought it was a small plane, like the one that had hit the Empire State Building years before. They had no television in the office and no one could get images on the internet--it was bogged down with heavy traffic. All we had was British Radio, and we didnt know how serious it was until we heard of second and third planes striking and the emotion of the british announcer that we knew something really serious was happening. As we made way back to our hotel, people on the street cars were asking us if we were Americans, and expressing their sorrow. When we got back, everyone's eyes were glued to tv, and we saw first images--it looked like an action movie, nothing that could possibly be real. No one could contact their parents, internet cafes were packed, and flowers began to innundate U.S Embassies. Later that night RadioHead dedicated their Berlin concert to the victims of 9/11, and a march in support of the United States was held at the last minute. Germans wore american flags across their chests, they had support gatherings in several countries. When we traveled out of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate was draped in a black cloak that read in german "We are all Americans Today". Although our europe trip lasted its duration through November, our conflict with Afghanistan made things volitale in some places, but overall, the people were very supportive, lining up to sign condolence books. While i am sorry i wasnt able to be with my family in these hard times, it was quite an experience to see how supportive our friends in other countries can be, and what a help it was to have that kind of understanding--it was tough not being home, and the only outlet being CNN. When i came home, the airport was empty, but i had never seen so many american flags in my life, on cars, on houses..such patriotism--and i hope it lasts, because in the toughest of times, each other is what is most valuable. My roommate woke me up when he found out about the attacks and I eagerly sat in my living room to watch the news broadcasts. Replay after replay of the second airplane hitting the trade center, images of a burning Pentagon, and interviews of worried New Yorkers had me sitting there most of the afternoon and evening. I had never been to New York, and hadn't really seen that many pictures of the World Trade center. I could tell, that day was the beginning of a new era in the way we as an American Society live. As the following months proceeded... The US Military deployed several aircraft carriers, and other submarines and ships carrying vast amounts of troops over seas. The USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) stayed out to sea for 159 consecutive days supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. In July of 2002, I enlisted in the United States Navy and volunteered my efforts to help support the strongest military in the world. I was deployed to the Medeterranean Sea in March of 2003 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I enlisted for several personal reasons... but knowing that I, as an American citizen, who will not stand for the loss of freedoms, the loss of undeniable rights to liberty, or terrorizing the lives of innocent people who represent equality and opportunity in the world. I am helping to defend a great nation - home to my friends and family... and I would make the decision to enlist all over again if I had to. The military works very hard to serve its beloved country. Every single citizen of this great land deserves the utmost secure feeling that we're doing our best to provide the protection, the freedoms, and liberties we so gratefully experience. We left NYC by train at 10 am on the 10th. The next morning my husband called to see if my sister was working that day. She worked in a store on the Concourse of the WTC, and thankfully she wasn't working that day because I had come to visit. I watched in horror the devastatation taking place in a city that is like a second home to me. I cried all day, glued to the TV. I was eating a home-cooked dinner in a small house in a suburb of Kiev, Ukraine, when Vova, the man of the house, came into the room. He could speak very little English, and I could not speak Ukrainian. ?Shae? he repeated, waving his arms, ?New York, New York? he said. I turned to face him. He was obviously trying to tell me something important. His face was one of concern and urgency. ?New York? he said again, and used his arms to draw in the air the outlines of tall buildings. ?Skyscrapers?? I said out loud, trying to guess what he was attempting to communicate. ?Da!? he replied, which is Ukrainian for ?Yes!? Then he spread his arms like an airplane, flying through the air. ?Airplane?? I guessed. ?Da!? he replied. He then used his hands to motion like an airplane diving into something, and held up two fingers. What was going on? Did an airplane crash into two buildings? Did two airplanes crash? What happened? Some poor excuse for a pilot probably flew his Piper Cub into something. Oh well, people do stupid things all the time. But Vova?s concern seemed to mean that there was something more to this. I asked him ?how big??, trying to learn the size of the airplane(s). He didn?t understand my question, so I took another approach. ?Boeing?? I said, naming a common aircraft manufacturer. ?Da!? he said. ?Da!?, holding up two fingers again. Again he drew buildings and held up two fingers. His meaning was getting clearer now. Hmm. Two Boeings like aircraft had crashed into two buildings in New York City. What a terrible tragedy. But such things just don?t happen. Professional pilots fly Boeing aircraft, and they certainly do not dive into buildings in New York. There must be some mis-communication here, something definitely lost in the translation. But given the language barrier I wasn?t going to find out any more from Vova. I figured that he probably had heard some pieces of garbled news and had wanted me to know about it. I thanked him and he went back to the other side of the house where the family had a black and white television. I kept eating. My friend Jim, who was visiting this home with me, came out of the nearby bathroom. I said ?Jim, Vova just tried to tell me something about two Boeing airplanes crashing into two buildings in New York City. I don?t think that I?ve got all the facts straight, but I thought you would want to know that something probably has happened back home.? Jim and I were part of a group of 13 American men who volunteered to come to Bucha, Ukraine, for 15 days. During our visit our task was to help a local Baptist church build classrooms. They were located next to a state orphanage. Our evangelical church in Virginia sponsored us. Jim and I were staying in a small but tidy home with a widow and her family. After dinner Jim and I met up at the church with the rest of the team. We were going to a soccer game that evening. Suddenly a van pulled up next to us. Two of our team members jumped out and excitedly said ?Terrorists crashed hijacked planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The Trade Centers have collapsed!? ?No! Are you sure?? I replied. ?We saw it ourselves on the television? they said. ?They collapsed? Those buildings wouldn?t collapse. All the way down?? I responded. ?All the way. The entire country is locked down. No planes are flying.? They answered. I felt like someone had slugged me in the stomach. I felt sick and sat down. 50,000 people worked in those towers. So this is what Vova had tried to tell me! Later that evening, at a gas station, a burly, tough looking Ukrainian recognized me as an American and walked up to me. His face reflected grave sympathy and concern. He began pouring out his heart in a torrent of words, but I could not understand anything he was saying. As I walked away I said to an interpreter ?What was he saying?? ?He was expressing his sympathy and support? was the reply. Here we were, stuck thousands of miles from home. Our families and friends were facing the unknown, and we could do nothing about it. The next day, while visiting the home of a local Christian missionary, I saw news clips on CNN-International. People were jumping from buildings. It took me a moment to realize what I was seeing. I will never forget it. Never. The daughter of a friend of one of my team members was killed in the North Tower on 9-11. One week later, on schedule, we flew home. Security was tight. When we arrived we were amazed at the changes that had taken place. We arrived at Dulles International and drove home. There were flags everywhere. America had clearly changed. As the months went by I realized that many common Americans had been deeply traumatized by the experiences of 9-11. They had watched it unfold before their eyes, live on television. They had endured the suspense of not knowing what was coming next. I was spared this because it was all over before I knew it had started. On each anniversary of 9-11, until justice is fully satisfied on OBL, we should watch the footage of the horror of that day. Let us not forget the death of the innocent ones. Let us not rationalize away this calculated plan to murder unsuspecting people. This is a clear case of Right versus Wrong, Civilization versus Barbarity. I support President Bush in his actions in Afghanistan, Iraq and throughout the world. We must win this conflict by ?draining the swamp? of corruption, totalitarianism and ignorance in which the terrorist mindset flourishes. The Gospel of Jesus is the best answer. The Western values of Tolerance and Freedom are based upon Christian concepts of the equality of man and a loving compassionate God. May God Bless America and keep her strong!
