I knew it was going to be a good day. Math was over and I was heading off to gym when I noticed that the teachers weren?t acting as normal. They looked, as they were afraid of something and extremely worried. I was finished for gym when my gym teacher Mr. B told me ?that a plane has just hit the trade centers?. My jaw dropped to the floor. Now first I?m thinking the plane was a small plane and the trade centers they were saying were the N.J INTL Trade centers. But no it was a big airliner and the trade centers were the World Trade center in N.Y. City. Around 10:00-11:00 our new principal called us up to the auditorium and told us about the world changing experience. All the teachers were worrying about friends and family members, and a lot of emotions were all about. Some students were using laughter and jokes to cheer up. Around 1:00 my mother called the school and came and got me out of school. All my other siblings were in the car. My Mother brought us down to Rita?s Italian Ices because she didn?t want us to watch the news all over the TV on almost every channel. Later that day at dinnertime while we were all eating there was no one talking throughout the whole entire night from the big shock! The next morning no could say anything, it was just eat, shower, and off to school. As time past news of 9/11 just died off and people just continued with there normal lives. And finally everyone just began to forget about it. Until now the one year anniversary is coming the news and memories are coming back. My wife and I were having breakfast,planning on taking a drive to a shopping center. My cellphone rang and it was a friend from New York. He asked if we were watching the news about the plane(supposedly a Cessena) that crashed into the Trade Center. As a former New Yorker who worked downtown, I immediately went home to watch CNN. I knew a number of people who worked in the North Tower and was horrified to see the events unfolding. As we began to call family in New York,my suspicions were confirmed as the second plane hit! Now the realization that our "home" was under attack began to sink in! My wife became ill watching the Towers burn and my thoughts turned to my kids. I wondered if they were aware of the tragedy and,if so, how they were handling it. At that moment, my daughter called from her phone and said the school was having an assembly to talk to the students. She said my son was across the auditorium and he wanted to speak to me immediately. I decided to go to their school and bring them home. Upon arrival, cars were lined up all over school grounds with parents rushing in to get their kids. It was chaotic at the school trying to find my children and get out quickly. We found my daughter,who was distraught,but no sign of my son. Suddenly, he appears,frantic and white as a ghost. His first question was to inquire about the friend who called me,thinking he was in the Towers. When I told him that my friend had moved uptown, he began to cry as he thought the worst!! We went home to spend the remainder of the day watching the news,silently grieving for those who were lost. One of those lost was a gentleman I worked with for a short period of time.The day after Thanksgiving 1987, I brought my daughter into work and she spent most of the day on his lap. He made her a ball out of rubber bands and attended to her as if she were his own. She's 18 now, and on a recent trip to Ground Zero,saw his name on a poster at St.Matthews. The realization of who he was and remembering the rubberband ball was very emotional for her. I hope the President was right when he said these people didn't die in vain. It would be a tragedy compounded if the scum who did this aren't found and killed!! Hopefully our country will recover and the family and friends of those lost will find some solace in the knowledge that their loved ones will never be forgotten!! Tell us your story: I remember I'd just been joking with a friend of mine when I walked into third period and saw my teacher with a look on his face that I'd never seen there before. It was somewhere between anger and fascination. The radio was on in the back corner of the room, as it usually was, so my teacher had been one of the first in the school to hear about the attacks. I dropped my books in my usual seat and listened to the radio and the nervous chatter in the classroom for a moment. I surprised myself by thinking first of my brother (whom I usually think of as an annoying guy I have to deal with whether I want to or not). He lives and goes to college in Manhattan. I knew that both his appartment and his school where not really near the southern tip of the island, but I still thought of him first. My next thought was my mother and our standing family rule to check in at a time like that. I asked my teacher if I could run over to the payphone now, beat the rush when the rest of the school found out. I sprinted across the school, dialed so fast I almost screwed up my own home phone number. I had a short conversation with my mom, who told me that my brother had checked in by email and that he had actually stood on the roof of one of his school buildings and seen the second plane hit. My mom thanked me for checking in and I told her I had to go because other students were already starting to gravitate towards the phones. I knew my family was safe and I wanted to give the others a chance to call home. The rest of that day everyone was in a daze. The administration refused to pass on official information, for fear of scaring us, I suppose, and most of the classrooms did not have radios or televisions. The result was wild rumors flying all over the place. The Golden Gate Bridge had been hit. The White House was blown up. Somebody bombed the Pentagon. As period after period passed the rumors got worse and more and more kids were signed out to be taken home by their parents. I even know a few seniors who just hopped in their cars and left. I don't think anyone blamed them. A certain section of students roamed the hallways randomly yelling such pithy, inspiring, and educated phrases as "NUKE 'EM ALL!" "JUST NUKE THE BASTARDS!" and "KILL ALL ARABS!" While I may have agreed with the basic sentiment of anger, there were times that day and in the following weeks that I wanted to throw textbooks at some of those kids. I suppose maybe that was their way of dealing with some of the fear, though. The history teacher who's classroom I had first heard about the attacks in continued to make the current issues part of the class discussions. We debated the "Nuke 'em" idea and the implications that the attacks would have on personal freedoms. I found that the discussions were a wonderful way of sorting out many of my own feelings on the subject. At home, my little sister told me the story of how her school administrators (at the local gradeschool) had misinformed the students to the point at which they were panicked and even more scared. (That principal was someone else I wanted to throw a textbook at.) We watched the news for about four hours solid, my dad spending much of his time in front of the TV along with the rest of us. Halfway through our fifth straight hour, while I was making a poor attempt at homework, I suddenly couldn't stand to watch or listen to the news any more. I litteraly screamed at my dad to turn the TV off. He agreed with me and that was that for the night. For the next few days we did watch the news, but not as much. None of us could really handle watching that footage over and over and over and over again . . . so we turned the TV off. This past year has gone by almost without my noticing it. This may be a function of my becoming a senior in high school, as I've heard that becoming a senior seems to happen to you almost before you even make it into high school in the first place, but I think it has something to do with a shift in my focus from obsessing so much about college and life after college back to the life I am living now. I went and joined the marching band and the choir, two things I'd always meant to do but never quite got around to. I begged and pleaded for a flying lesson for my 17th birthday because flying has always been my great dream and I wanted to make sure I did it. I consciously decided to make sure I hugged my mom and my dad and my sister and even my annoying brother more often. Maybe it was leftover fear from the anthrax scares and the treat of a followup attack, or maybe it was just a heightened awareness of my own mortality in general. Whichever, it definitely changed me. Tell us your story: That morning I had awaken extremly early for no apparent reason, for me I was a ninth grader in high school and I wouldn't have gotten up if my mom was throwing things at me. But this morning was different, I first got up at about 2 o'clock, went back sleep, got up at about 3, then I stayed in bed till about 3:30 when I turned on the television. At first I thought it was just really early news, but when I turned the station it was on every single station. I just thought my battery in my remote was dead. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Holly Cavanaugh and I am a freshman at Cleveland State. I was a junior in H.S. when the 9/11 tragedy occured. I was sitting in French class when the planes struck the two towers. The Senior Social studies teacher at my High School came in and told our French teacher that two planes had struck the World Trade Center towers. At first, we laughed and said, "Oh, he's just teasing us." But as I got up to go deliver a message to the office, I walked in and they had on the televison images of the burning towers. I could not believe my eyes. I walked back in and said, "it's true. The WTC towers have been hit and they're on fire from the jet fuel!" As the bell rang, we all rushed to our next classes and immediately everyone turned on the TV's. It was ten minutes into the next period when I saw the south tower collaspe. I lost it, opened the door that led to the outside and screamed with anger. But then I heard a low rumble. I looked up, and saw a plane heading towards Cleveland, but it was low for it to just be passing by. And I mean, it wasn't a small plane that we see land at Geauga county Airport every now and then. This was a JET-LINER. I stood there and thought, and I shook my head "No." I went back inside, and I saw the North Tower fall, and I screamed again. However, we all heard a low rumble again and looked outside. That plane was back. We all looked at each other and we were like, "Uh oh." We would then learn, twenty minutes later, that plane was Flight 93, the plane that crashed in a PA field. I will never forget that day. Ever. Every time I flip channels and I see on program on Discovery or some other channel that talks about it, mental images of those towers burning flash into my mind. I truly believe though, that after this, you could tell that everyone in America became more proud of our Nation that before. As soon as I wake up in the morning I turn on the Today Show and I saw this horrible image on my television and could not beleive my eyes. I couldn't leave the television, knowing that I had to get ready for work. I was debating if I should even go to work or take my daughter to school. I had kind of figured that we were pretty much safe in California so I decided to get ready for work and also get my daughter ready for school. Riding to work Iwas in a trance and you could look around to everyone in their cars going to work also in a trance. We just could not beleive what was happening to our country. Looking back now it seems like everything wasjust too perfect and calm, take it America had it's problems but life was good. I was in New York a year before 911 and I still fell as though I had had a preminition . Within the course of maybee an hour on one of the days that I was in the city my girlfriend and I saw three to four sets of twins. I didn't think anything about that, after that some other things happened to me while being in New York and I just wanted out of there, my spirit felt weighed down and I couldn't tell what was going on with me,I had a funny feeling about the city, I didn't want to fly home, I was afraid to. I was suppose to fly out of Kennedy and ended up flying out of Jersey International Airport. I was so releived to get back to the west coast. Looking back those moments while I was in the city I truly feel like God was trying to tell me somthing and I just did not know how to decipher what was going on around me. Tell us your story: the morning of september 11 2001 was like any other morning, i was at my desk working taking calls from customers assisting them in getting there telephone service turned on. i noticed everytime the breakroom door opened i would hear moans and crys of oh my God.......i got up to go to the break room and saw everyone watching the tv......when i saw the newscast showing a live shot of an airplane running into one of the trade center buildings i could not beleive what i was seeing............i was numb......confused not sure what was going on. we started asking one and other if this was someone trying to commit suicide or a plane that was out of control.......then we saw the other plane come straight for the other tower.........i still could not beleive what i was seeing.....everyone including myself started to silently weep.....those poor innocent people in the planes and the buildings.....i had to go back to my desk but it was very hard to continue to do my job.....how could i just continue like nothing was going on when so many people had lost there lives....every chance i got to go to the break room i did. i was shocked to hear about the plane going down in pennysvania......the plane in virginia.....it just was so hard to beleive that some terrorist group had targetted the united states.......then the anger came.....with the tears and sadness....all i could think about where those people trapped in the towers still fighting for there lives.....the policemen and firemen who lost there lives doing there jobs....it just was almost to much to bear.............after a few days i noticed a change in how people treated each other, the comaraderie and pride in who we where....i was very touched at how people in our building immediatly started taking up collections for the families who lost there loved ones....the biggest thing that i will always remember and cherish is how the united states.....(the whole country) all became one people......these families where our families....the patriotism that became alive again and one year later is still alive and burning bright in this country. unfortunatly for the devil who implemented this tragedy he did not cause the united states to fall or buckle with fear.....we became stronger and very determined to do our best to stop people like him from ever even thinking about coming to our country and taking away the lives of our people....we have all suffered from what this devil has done....a lot of us including my husband and myself has lost something.....(stock markets dropped and we lost our retirement) but we will go on and do the best that we can.....as will the suvivors and widows and widowers and the orphans of that fateful day.......because we the people of the united states are a strong people and getting stronger.......with the help of each other.... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: That Tuesday started out as any other day, but my children, huband and I were excited and packing. We were to go to Boston on the 12th to visit family. My husband called from his cell phone in the car just after 9 am and told me to put on the news. My children (aged 1 and 3) were watching Nick Jr. so I had no idea what I was going to see. The image, so horrific and strange, didn't make sense to me. My husband is a private pilot who trained here in South Florida at the same place the terrorists trained in Lantana. He knew it was no mistake that the tower was hit. We got off the phone and I continued to watch and saw the second plane hit. My phone rang again and it was my father. My step mother was at her usual post at Boston Logan airport that morning. She works for United Airlines. She loaded passengers on the very flight that I watched hit the second tower. Among the passengers were a handful of her friends, headed to Las Vegas via Los Angeles. They planned to be back on Friday and she was covering one of their shifts. My father told me what we had already suspected. The FBI was at Logan Airport with my step mother going through the flight passenger list and all of the other things that had to be done immediately. We knew there would be no trip to Boston the next day. But that was the least of it. My step mother was faced with the task of notifying all of the next of kin of the passengers of what had happened. She spent the next 10 days with the FBI going through all of the minutea of the morning of the 11th. We made our trip to Boston two weeks later and have gone on with things as usual. I heard from a cousin in New York that 4 of my cousins were to be at the twin towers that day but for various reasons were not there. One cousin, a computer technician was to go there first thing, but at the last minute changed his schedule to go there in the afternoon. He had a clear view of the towers from his other clients office and witnessed the entire thing out a window before evacuating. Another cousin was working from home due to morning sickness that day. Cousin number 3 missed his train and did not arrive at all to the towers that morning. A fourth cousin was to have a job interview there that morning but had rescheduled to the day before. God held us all in the palm of His hand that morning. SOme people ask where God was during the entire tradgedy. He was there, where He always is, with all of us. At the towers and beyond. School just started so we were doing intros and such. I just moved here from KOrea so I got scared because I was just on a plane. The news came over the announcements but I didn't know what the World Trade Centers were. When I heard about the Pentagon I was very scared because my dad works there. However, he was in a bomb shelter in the White House because he was having a meeting there at the time. When I found out the twin towers were in NYC I got scared again because my cousins live there. I didn't talk to my parents until I got home and we all sat in the living room and watched TV. I remember at the middle school everybody was really scared and running around. That next class I had to take a bus uo to WEst SPringfield High School to take Spanish 4 but I didn't because they wanted me to stay at the middle school. I sat in the office and watched a flood of parents come in and demand that their children be let out. Many students left the school with their familes. A lot of students I saw walking through the halls were crying. A TV in every room except classrooms where there was a class was on and teachers were watching it intently. It was scary and I really didn't know what was going on. This event reminded me of PEarl Harbor.That next year I had to get on a plane to go to Texas and I got scared thinking another terrorist would just take over the plane and make us crash somewhere. I believe that although this event was a horrible atrocity, it made America stronger and more united. I hope that something like this will never happen again. This event also made me aware and the hatred for Americans from certain groups of people in the Middle EAst. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a 19 year old student. When the first plane struck, I was in my car driving to the school library. I was listening to a local DJ by the name of Bubba the Love sponge. He had a TV in the studio as he broadcast and he was in the middle of a sentence when he and his co-workers started gasping and saying "Oh my god, I can't believe it". He then announced that an airplane had been crashed into one of the world trade towers. Before the second plane had crashed, Bubba had tracked down the telephone number to the world trade center and called to tell them a "little bit of smoke is coming out of your roof top". Almost immediatly after he said that, the second plane hit. It didn't seem real to me and I thought it was a joke. When I arrived at the library, I went on the internet and tried to find out if CNN or Fox had posted anything. Someone ran into the room and yelled "The pentagon has been hit by a bomb". A TV was carried up the stairs and we watched the news as the trajedy carried on. When I left the library, some of the classes were being let out and I remember hearing the shock and disbelief in the voices around me. One girl claimed that she heard that the perpetuators were going to hit somewhere in America every seven minutes until America had been destroyed... But America is much more than a country and can never be truly wiped out. I have read several websites claiming that September 11th was "not that big of a deal". To me, it was a big deal. It was the first attack on american soil. We lost more than 3,000 of our friends, coworkers and members of our family. Firemen and Policemen willingly gave their lives in order to ensure that just one more person was able to get out alive. My favorite saying post-9/11 was the coca-cola billboard that said "We live as many. We stand as one". America united on that day. We didn't care about race, religion, or petty things. We only cared that we were American and we were proud of it. We gave our money. We gave our time. We gave our prayers and we shed our tears. God Bless America. I was at my desk, working, when my office manager walked in, and told me a plane had struck into the One of the World Trade Center towers. I could not believe what I was hearing, and turned on my radio in my office. I called my mom, she was at work, and she had heard too, and was crying, then I heard the radio, and a man was screaming that another plane had hit the other tower. I was totally befuddled. In June of 2001 my husband Martin and I bought a time-share apartment in midtown Manhattan because we no longer wished to make the drive back to Philadelphia on late evenings after a long day in New York, and by 9/11 we had spent many happy days in New York museums, theaters and restaurants, and had met some friends and relatives there. After 9/11, I mentioned to my husband that I already felt like a citizen of Manhattan and I felt an obligation to go there to pay my respects to those who had died and those who were working at ground zero. Since we were leaving for Europe shortly we went the following week, and immediately went downtown. My first shock was the realization that we could no longer take the subway all the way down and that we had to walk pretty far, and many emergency vehicles of various kinds kept passing us headed toward ground zero. As we walked, the air got "thicker" and I had to put my scarf over my nose and mouth to keep out the "dust." But as we got closer, I really saw the heartbreak and sorrow expressed on all the hand-made signs everywhere...a photo of a smiling young woman with long dark hair holding a toddler and wearing a pretty summer dress, labelled, "have you seen my wife? Please call ! ...another, a professional portrait of a middle-aged fellow dressed in a business suit..."have you seen my Dad?",..dozens and dozens, maybe hundreds of them posted close together, side by side and one above the other, as we came nearer to the site. Some people were handing out fliers advertising for their lost families, some just stood there holding their pictures face out for us to see. And as we got closer we saw one after another, stores with everything inside coated in a thick layer of a grey substance so you had to strain to identify the things underneath, dead places, like Pompei. And in the open doorways of many Of the stores sat silent melancholy looking people, perhaps the owners waiting for insurance companies to come help. It seemed to me that the most pitiful store of all was what had obviously once been an elegant beauty salon all coated in this thick gray stuff, hair-driers, perfume bottles, chairs, tables, vials and cans and tubes of cosmetics and lotions, and even the floor. How strange. When we finally arrived at the "end," as close as we could go, there stood a crowd of people, all ages, all colors, all classes, all styles, and all seemingly struck dumb, standing there absolutely silent, staring at whatever we could see of the workers and the work (they were dismantling a huge piece of the steel of one of the two towers) and the tiny church almost next door (said to be the oldest church in New York, St. Paul's, I think. When I could no longer stand, Martin and I walked silently away and the crowd parted silently to let us through. A few blocks away a young Frenchman with a bicycle rigged rickshaw picked us up and took us to the nearest subway entrance. I saw that the first building was on fire and as I was asking her what happened, I saw the second plane hit the second building. I had just giving birth in July and you could imagine my horror when I heard that a third plane had hit the Pentagon. I have family in New York and my husband's cousin is employed at the Pentagon. Thanks to alot of prayers and GOD's love, they were return to us unharmed. My husband is military and had just left home to go to work. I called his job and cried out to him are we going to war? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to work between 08:00 and 09:00 A.M. on the morning of 09/11/2001. I take I-181 into Johnson City, TN. as I live in Gray, TN. I know that this will sound a bit "made up", but it is absolutely true. On the drive into Johnson City, the morning sun was just beginning to burn off the morning fog cover nicely. There is a section of I-181 that spans through farmland and it is not flat. The road follows the contour of the hilly farmland. I came up on a section of the road that had a very erie rolling fog across it, even though I could see bright sunny skies above it. I remember thinking to myself that this seems very odd. It was like I was driving into a cloud that should not be there. I drove through it and came to the other side of it a few seconds later. I remeber also thinking to myself that I hope that it was not a sign of a bad day coming up. Well I guess you could say that it was a bad day!!! I went on into the building when I got to work and went into my office and followed the same routine that I do every morning. I work for Alliance Data Systems, and we are in the credit card processing business. We have a state of the art Help Desk in the facility that has 3 large screen T.V's. One with a sattelite feed for the major networks to receive news such as CNN, etc. Shortly after 09:00 A.M., my manager knocked on my door, as I was in a meeting, and asked if I had heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Center? Of course, I was still unaware of anything at this point. The first thing that comes to mind when hearing news of this sort is first "It cannot be true can it?" and second, if it is, it has to be a small private plane that has gotten caught up in some terrible accident, right? I remember thinking also, "I am sure I will hear about this tonight" so I continued with the meeting I was in. Roughly 15-20 minutes later, one of my friends at work stopped by my office and told me that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center, and at that point I knew that something major was happening. I went down to the Help Desk and joined a group of about 6 other managers. We stood there, as if frozen in time, and watched the CNN feed to large screen T.V. It was like watching a Bruce Willis movie, but with the thought in my mind of "These are real people dying." I went back into my office about 10 minutes later and the phone rang. It was my wife, and she told me that 2 passenger planes had hit the World Trade Center, another had hit The Pentagon, and a 4th was still in the air. This is the one that later crashed in Pennsylvania. I will never forget her telling me "That all hell is breaking loose." Shortly after hanging up the phone with my wife, another friend told me that one of the towers had collapsed. My thought was, "How in the world can this happen in America?" I don't think I was aware of time at this point, everything seemed to run together. I picked my son up from school, and on the way to get him, I remember that there was no music on any radio station, only horrific news. We got home, went to pick up my daughter from daycare and waited for my wife to finish at her job. We watched T.V. until 02:00 A.M. the next morning and waited for next workday. A teacher from another classroom came rushing in telling all of us that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by a plane. I was in complete shock and disbelief. I never thought that anything like that could ever have happened to us. I can remember that my first period teacher was late getting to school because her brother worked in one of the towers, and she was despirately trying to get ahold of him. The day just seemed to go by in a haze. The halls and lunch room were amazingly quiet as we passed from class to class. In every classroom we had the tv on watching CNN or some other news chanel. At first, I didn't want to believe that what i was seeing was actually happening. It frightened me so much, what was happening. Tell us your story: I was getting ready for work when my mother called and told me that a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. The first thought that came to mind was not terrorism, but how could a commercial jet lose control and hit a building that large? When the second plane hit there was no question. I immediately went to the TV to see what was going on and saw the towers on fire. It didn't seem real - like something out of a movie. I was shocked and horrified, but I still felt the need to attempt to go to work. When I went downstairs and was about to reach the door leading to the street, I heard my neighbors scream. I will never forget their words "Oh my God we're under attack they hit the Pentagon". Not knowing what was going on or what would be next I ran back to my apartment. After watching more of the news coverage, I needed to see it with my own eyes so I ran up to the roof of my apartment building to see the skyline that I have looked upon countless times over the years only to see those two magnifcent buildings in flames. The vivid colors and billowing smoke will forever be burned into my memory, however; at that time it seemed so surreal. When I returned to my TV, I saw the first building come down and could not believe what I was seeing. How could one of thise buildings be gone? Shortly after, the second building came down and it was truely beyond belief that they could both be gone. I spent the rest of the morning trying to contact my loved ones to be sure that they were all OK; all the time clutching the TV remote to be sure I would not miss a thing. It was impossible to get an open phone line so I used my cell phone to contact everyone. After I reached everyone I needed to, I lay in bed and watched hours upon hours of news coverage. I eventually got up enough nerve to go back on the roof and see where the buildings once were. In their place was a large plume of smoke traveling towards me. By nightfall, when my loved ones returned home safely I was so completely emotionally exhausted that I passed out. As soon as I awoke, I resumed watching the news coverage to be sure nothing else had occurred. For days after, I watched the news day and night. It was the first thing I turned on in the morning and the last thing I saw before I went to sleep. I would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and turn the TV on to be sure nothing else had happened. I was truly the most horrifying experience of my life that will never be forgotten. No one who was alive on that day will ever be able to get past those images and the memory of the fear. I hope that this archive will help later generations completely understand what it was like to experience this first hand and to truly be changed forever. I am a realist and not easily sent into denial but my immediate reaction was that someone had hijacked the TV station. Visions of King Kong and the Empire State Building flashed through my mind. We then heard about the Pentagon and incorrect other incidents and were told to set up for mass casualties. We are fifteen minutes from Dulles Airport and were told that another aircraft was hijacked and enroute. The next few hours were spent getting ready and discharging non-critical patients. However, med evac was unable to get into the air because of restrictions and the travel corridors were massive traffic jams. The ER staff went into high gear. Although the preparations were unnecessary the teamwork was exceptional. By the next day in Leesburg there were armed guards and military all over even in our supermarkets since we are close to the FAA facility. 9/11 became not just an infamous date but a 911 Emergency Call to the hearts and minds of all Americans. My age is sixty-two. I have lived through World War II and was a military dependent in Germany and recall the destruction there from the bombing. During the cold war while living in California I was taken to see an A bomb blast and remember the drills and bomb shelters. While living on an Air Force base in Texas I remember the husbands and fathers who did not return from the war. As a flight attendant I was priviledged to fly soldiers into Vietnam (MAC). During the Gulf War I again transported soldiers to and from Saudi (CRAF). I thought about those wars, the soldiers, the casualties, and about the world that my daughters would inherit. I worried about my youngest daughter in the Army Reserves and her boyfriend in the Marine Reserves. As a former union representative I recalled the time I went to the FAA complaining that their "surprise" inspection was posted in Company dispatch along with descriptions of the inspectors and precautions to be taken. My complaints fell on deaf ears. On 9/11 I was also very angry because I knew this could have been averted. Also I was wondering where the FBI & CIA had been. My thoughts were with the families of the crews. As a Hospice care worker I knew about long term problems and grief. I knew that those who had died had been taken into God's Arms but those who remained would suffer. Near the end of the day I cried when I heard how many firefighters and policemen were lost. For a short time I was a volunteer administrative member of a Fire & Rescue Volunteer Squad. Having taken the training and gotten to know the "family" concept I knew what an impact this would have. As a native New Yorker I was also very sad. I lived in NYC as a child and have visited more times than I can count. My Mom worked at Macy's when she was young, I have skated with my brother at Rockefeller Center, played in Central Park and love the Metropolitan Museum. Flying by NYC a million times and seeing the city from the ferry to Staten Island are among my happiest memories. My parents, now in their eighties, are two of the most patriotic people I know. My Mom complains everytime she goes into a government or civic building and does not see a flag. They have complained about our lack of patriotism as a nation. Two weeks after 9/11 I drove two-thousand miles across the country to and from a Reunion of the 1957 Central High School Class from Bushy Park AFB in London, England (most were military brats then). The display of red, white and blue across our country was wonderful. Our hearts and minds woke up and flags decorated our country. My life has changed since that morning. I pray more, do more and travel more. Life is a gift and I am a grateful and proud American. Our freedoms will be restricted as a tradeoff for security. I may become annoyed but prefer security. I start each morning with a prayer for world peace and world understanding. 9/11 is a History Lesson and I hope that we learn it well. Thank you for this site.
