I was listening to the goofy morning dj's and I heard them say something about a plane hitting a building. My first thought was that they were joking like some kind of modern day "War of the Worlds". Then, as their voices became more serious, I figured that perhaps a small prop plane had hit. I never in my wildest, most horrific dreams, ever, EVER could have imagined what had really happened. At the time the dj's didn't really know much yet. I continued my drive to work and soon they had their televisions on and were watching the towers live. At the very moment that I hit the bump into the driveway where I work, they announced that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center. I don't remember much of what happened after that. People at work scrambled for radios and tried to get on the internet but most sites were impossible to get to or incredibly slow due to the number of surfers looking for information, explanation, condemnation. I thought of my son, 10 years old, at school and I wondered if I should go get him. But what could I do to keep him safe in this mayhem? How would I try to explain something to him that I had no grasp of myself? Reasoning that his classes are in the basement of the school building, he was as safe as he could possibly be and I decided to keep him there. I stayed at work rather than go home to my mid-rise apartment. By this time we'd heard rumours that Flight 93 made a u-turn within Cleveland's air space and the thought of those people flying over us, terrified and in so much danger was incredibly disturbing. When the Pentagon was hit I feared that other cities would be attacked as well. I pictured scenes from the movie Independence Day. Now it is one year later. I left for work early today. I didn't want to get on the freeway at 8:46 and I didn't want to pull in the driveway at work at 9:02. I'm still in some shock and I think of the events of that fateful morning every single day. A former co-worker called me to share his memories; apparently I was the one who told him about the crashes. I burst into tears as we hung up. We observed a moment of silence today. I'm wearing red, white, and blue. I'm carrying my rosary in a pocket near my heart. I'm teary and emotional. Other co-workers have come up to me and said that I was the first to tell them about the attacks. I still don't remember doing that. It was a very usual morning with a lot of anxiety of new and better opportunity for him, just maybe sun is were very bright, and wind was light - it was a perfect day. I dropped my four daughters to school and went back home to pick up some other necessary tings, and in a moment we were leaving to Manhattan. The all what I was thinking about - it is my husband's future in the new company. I was praying for him, that he could get that position. In over daily routines we are watching TV every morning, but on this morning we were in such a rush, that we couldn't even think about it. When we got on the road going toward subway one of our friends called us back and asked, "Where are you going guys?" We said: "To Manhattan". "Don't you watch the news?" He replayed "No, we didn't had a time today. What happened?" we asked him. He pointed toward Downtown and said: "Look the Twin Towers is on fire. The flight crashed in it" We couldn't believe in what he said. It was really unbelievable. We got back to our house and got on the roof of our building to see with our own eyes. But there was instead of Twin Towers a black cloud of smoke. We came back to the apartment and what I remember next - we were staring on TV in sinless that was going forever. At that time South Tower started to collapse. It was a shock which one wouldn't go away so easy. At that time I realize that someone else needs my prayers more than my husband. At this moment I forgot everyone around me because what I was seeing on TV was looking very unreal to me, and I was praying that as much us possible people could get out from there a life. Than I felt, like somebody pushed me, and said: "Kids.". "Oh my God, kids!" replayed I, "My kids!" I rushed to school to pick them up, because I didn't know what to expect else. I just wanted to hold them tied next to me? Since that moment we were froze next to TV, trying to catch every single news, every single moment. We were counting every single one pulled from the ruble a life and praying to see more. But it looked like God wasn't looking toward those who were berried under the World Trade Center. But those who were pulled out from there were born for second time. Since that day I wanted to cry, but my eyes didn't let me; me eyes wanted to sleep, but my memory didn't let me; I wanted to talk, but my mouth didn't let me. It felt like I was death my self. I lost interest in things which I was enjoying not so long a go, I lost interest in life it self. And only thinking of my kids helped me to get around. Over the past year I went only few times to Manhattan and only because I had to take my guests up there, and I was bursting in tears. And after a year I still feel the same way, as at that day, or maybe worse. Still I can't go to Downtown, because I feel the pain of those who died up there and of those who they left behind them. I can't watch the news anymore because every single word about World Trade Center makes the tears to come out from my eyes. I feel so exhausted and depressed. I feel sorry for my kids because every single day they see me crying, and every single day I have to explain to them, that it is OK for mommy to cry. But it hurts me more when they seat next to me and cry too. No one from people who I know was hurt in that tragedy, but I feel like some one close to me died up there. I never expected myself to react this way on this tragedy, and I witnessed it only trough the TV, so I can't stop thinking about the people who were there when it happened. I really want to step over this pain and go back to my normal life, but I am not sure, that ever I will be able to do it. Tell us your story: As i walked home i recieved a phone call from an aunt telling me world war 3 had broken out and hell was loose, it must have been, she informed me of the attack and i ran to the nearest window, a man had opened his house up to passers bye on the street and was soon full of random strangers, the various emotions passed through each one of ue, and like in America we were all there for each other! My aunt was right, hounds of hell had been released! ours past and the news kept coming in, people lost dead, fathers, mothers, children, brothers... real innoscent people, this was no big hollywood film, this was sadly all so real. As the days, weeks, months and even years passed i collected everything i could newspapers, programs, magnets t-shirts, everything! then the other day, almost four years on i saw the one thing that inspired me most from that tragic time, a written comment by a 7 year old child she had said... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work as a defense contractor in northern Virginia. Until June 2001, I had been working in the Pentagon. On September 11, 2001, I was working at a nearby office building in the Clarendon area. After doing my "morning chores," my plan was to take the Metro over to the Pentagon for a haircut, banking (my credit union has a branch there), and to pop in on the folks I used to work with. My first inkling that something had happened came with a co-worker running down the aisle, yelling that a plane had hit the Twin Towers. I walked into an adjacent office and turned on the small TV there. I watched as the 2nd plane hit the other tower. Everyone there said, "This is a terrorist attack." We were in a 14-story building (on the 3rd floor) and suddenly we were looking out of the big plate-glass windows, scanning the sky for anything that might be flying towards US. Then we heard that the Pentagon had been hit and it was surreal seeing the WTC/Pentagon on split-screen on the TV and also looking out the window and seeing the black smoke billowing from the Pentagon. I called my wife (she works for another defense contractor in Vienna). She was not there, but I left a voicemail telling her what had happened and that our building was being evacuated (she knew I had planned to travel to the Pentagon that day). The "orderly evacuation" of our building turned into everyone leaving, all at once, from the underground parking garage. As I inched my car forward, wanting to get out of there into open air and trying to hear the AM radio reports, I couldn't think of anything but calling my parents and relatives and letting them know that I was OK. I got out onto Washington Blvd in Arlington and headed home. OK...inched my way home. There was a lot of traffic. People nervously scanning the air from their car windows. Other folks ALREADY flying U.S. flags from their vehicles (amazing). I tried to call my Mom from my cell, but all lines were jammed. I tried to call my wife...same deal. I finally arrived home about 45 minutes later (normally a 10-minute commute). Several of my neighbors were standing outside, looking up. By this time, Air Force fighters were screaming overhead and setting up defensive air patrols over the capital. I went inside and turned on the TV. I fixed myself a strong drink and tried to e-mail everyone I knew. Surprisingly, the Internet was not affected so I was able to let my in-laws know, as well as everyone on my mailing list, that I was fine. My parents, however, did not have a computer, so I continued trying to contact them. No dice. About 3 hours later, my first wife called to find out if I was OK. I told her to call my Mom and let her know I was fine. Amazingly, my Mom did not know anything had happened. She normally has the TV on, but for some reason, she chose not to turn it on that particular morning. I'm kinda glad she didn't see the Pentagon stuff when it happened. The rest of the day was spent watching TV, fielding phone calls and e-mails from friends and family, and just not believing what I was seeing. I remember getting ready when my husband told me that a plane had hit a building. My first reaction was that it was an accident. When my husband said that another plane had hit a building, it was then that I knew it was no accident, but it still didn't come to me that it was a terrorist attack. The whole time I was at the hospital, I kept an eye on the news. By the time that I had my daughter, everything was gone. To this day, I believe that a very tragic thing happened, but by bringing a child into this world at that day, seemed to bring something positive to it. Tell us your story: About two weeks before the terrorist attacks, I had had a dream that when I had awaken I was so taken back, I didn't understand it. I shared this with one of my friends, I said " I had this dream that really shook me up, It was of a beautiful day I could see the sun shinning, when all of a sudden these dark thick clouds came from below and moved towards the sun. When the first cloud touched the sun little speckles of red began filling it. The sun filled up with these red speckles and when the sun was full blood poured out." I then was surrounded by others praying the rosary. She said to me "Well you know what to do, you need to pray!" On the morning of September 11th, 2001 I was awaken by my phone ringing, it was my older sister. Kay began "Carrie, turn on the tv, a plane just went through the World's Trade Center. They think that we maybe under attack." I was trying to grasp what she was telling me. I ran to turn on the tv waking my husband. I stood there watching as I held the phone in my hand and witnessed the second plane fly into the second building of the World Trade Center. I told my sister that I would call her back. I ran to my oldest sons room where he came and joined us in the living room. My younger girls where waking, I quickly poured there cereal and went back to veiwing the news. Breaking news the pentegon was then struck. My thoughts where "my God what is happening." I then saw the first building begin to collaspe, I screamed "OH, my God all the people!" I began praying and crying and screaming all at once. Then it seemed like moments later we watched the second tower come down. I ran out of my house I couldn't believe it. My mind would not reason with what was happening, typically, I wanted to run! Where would I go. I Came inside and began calling my loved ones. My second oldest son came home from school, he said he couldn't take it, he had to leave. My husband and oldest son had to get to work. I didn't want them to leave, I believed that this was going to happen over and over again. I received another phone call from my sister Kay, that gas prices would sky rocket. I then prepared my little ones to go to the station and store. I was in a panic. As I was filling up on gas I heard over the radio that another plane was hijacked. My thoughts where to get enough food in my home for a few days, but we didn't have much money, so I filled up on necessities. As I was driving home, hearing that the next airline may be shot down, I thought why am I thinking of my self, I slowed down and began to pray. I prayed the rosary and then I was inspired to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. I then felt a deepening of prayer calling upon St. Michael the Arch angel... I felt calmer now, still in shock but I then turned to my children and began focusing back on my duties. After arriving home and putting away the groceries, we began our school day, trusting in God. In the afternoon when my oldest daughter arrived home from school, I went to church and visited our Lord, in the Most Blessed Sacrement, I began to weep. Others entered the room, business men and women, elderly people, some where completly quite while others you could hear there groaning. I just prayed for all of the families, for all the souls that where lost. Late in the afternoon I received a phone call that my parish would have a vigil that evening. I went and the church was full! Father who was so very sad lead is in many prayers, when he began the rosary, I then recalled my dream realizing that this is what it meant. The next few weeks I continued to try to get back to a normal life, but I knew that it was time to bring people together. I then planned and met with my pastor to begin the "Be not Afaid Holy Hours", Mother Teresa idea, on optaining peace within the families, or nation. So we began. We had great attendance in the beginning then it grew less and less. We know meet in my home, but one day God's people will be informed that the attack is on family life. My thoughts today on the one year anniversity are saddness, mourning but also I have this deep sense to be not afraid! That God acted in helping so many through people and that we must trust that he will continue to take care of all of our needs. I remember hearing the confusion on the radio stations when the first plane crashed and the screams of the Deejay?s when the second plane crashed and the dead air that lasted for about five seconds, while the shock of what just happened set in. I was helpless driving in my car to my job, trying to figure out what was happening. No one knew at this moment. The Deejay?s started talking and trying, themselves, to figure out what was going on. I just felt the tears start streaming down my face as I was sitting in bumper to bumper Chicago traffic. I remember sitting in my car in disbelief of what just happened. Trying to put two and two together and figure out why this tragedy occurred. I kept switching stations to see if anyone really knew what was going on. I arrived in my office and turned our television set on and watched the news. My co-workers proceeded to arrive all with the same disbelief in their eyes, as I held in my own. Tear streaks down everyone?s faces. We just hugged and watched, trying to sort out the details. From my office window I just kept staring out. Through my window I had a perfect view of the beautiful Chicago Skyline and a perfect view of the Sears Tower. I couldn?t keep my eyes off of it, wondering if it was next. One of my closest friends works in this building and I could not reach her. I knew they evacuated the building but I was still pondering the what if?s? What if they targeted Chicago instead of New York? What if it had been the Sears Tower instead of the Twin Towers? I couldn?t help but feel a twinge of relief knowing that my friend was okay. Then went into remorse for all the families in New York that lost their loved ones. I never wondered about the safety of our country before this moment. But now all I could do was wonder what our future held and how many more tragedies would strike before peace would be met. I am still wondering this same thought and am hopeful that we will prevail. Thinking it was a small plane, and not big deal, we continued on our way. As I was driving home about 20 minutes later, I finally came to understand what had really happened. I immediately called my husband, my mother and my best friend. Upon arriving at home, I turned on the TV coverage and again called my best friend. We spent the next couple of hours on the phone, watching the coverage...rarely speaking..not finding the words to convery what we were feeling. My mother often speaks of where she was when Kennedy was shot, and for once I completely understand that sentiment. I will never forget where I was on that horrific day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I'm always late for work and I was that day too. Hoboken is on the Hudson River, directly opposite downtown Manhattan. The day was beautiful. As I left the building to head towards the PATH train to go to my office in midtown Manhattan, I saw a group of people on the corner, looking up. Of course I joined them. Somehow I'd missed hearing/seeing anything on the news during the fifteen minutes from the time the first plane hit to the time I got to the street. The towers were directly in my line of vision (they were the first things I'd look at every morning and the first things I'd see when I got off the PATH at the end of each day). I must have been there for 3 minutes at most, staring, like thousands of others were doing. As we watched the flames and smoke, a plane veered into sight, banking steeply, disappeared behind the north tower and a huge mushroom cloud appeared. The south tower had been it. Even through the disbelief and horror of it all, I remember thinking that it was interesting how people saw the event so differently. Several people said it was a small propeller plane. I wondered how they could possibly have thought so. To me it was huge, black and in no way could have been mistaken for a small plane. A woman started to yell hysterically that we were under attack. For some strange reason, my first thought was that the air traffic control system had broken down and that planes were flying blind, and that there would be others coming at any second. I didn't realize it, but tears were streaming from my eyes - almost like an involuntary reaction. An acquaintance from my building said she had to get to work - in midtown Manhattan. I told her .. look, there's no way either of us are going to work today. She was anxious to go, but eventually we both went back indoors. I wanted to stay and watch, but it felt wrong somehow. By the time I reached my apartment on the 25th floor, there was already a message from a friend in England on the machine saying that they were watching everything unfold and to please call. Ironically, I got through to England with no problems, but couldn't reach any local numbers. After the plane hit the Pentagon, I was pacing in my living room watching the TV. There was a tremendous noise - a jet flying overhead. I thought it was another attack. Human instinct is such a strange thing. I dove to the floor and hit the carpet hard enough to feel a rug burn, like that was going to help me. It was a military jet - the first of many. My boyfriend came home from his job in Newark. He had to drive through backstreets because the main road, which is also the approach to the Holland Tunnel, was already closed. Strangely, he could get through to me on the phone and I got mad with him because he kept calling to ask for directions to get home because he didn't know the back streets, and I didn't even know where he was, so HOW could I give him directions? A friend of a friend came over .. he worked in Jersey City, lives in Brooklyn, and couldn't get home because the whole city was in a "lock-down" situation. The tv channel we were watching kept cutting to a reporter standing outside St. Vincent's where staff were waiting for the injured to arrive in droves. Each time they went to him, the scene was the same. Waiting, waiting, and nothing happening. After a while we went out. Hoboken was full of people but it was eerily silent. The sun was strong and one of the cops at one of the barricades had sweat glistening on his bald head. He was wearing dark glasses and reminded me of the prison guard in Cool Hand Luke (again, what a strange thought to have). He was answering the same question over and over -- how can we get home? We need to get to Manhattan/Brooklyn/Queens/Long Island. People were sitting on the sidewalks, they didn't have anywhere else to go. At the train terminal, there was a triage area with body boards, bags of fluids, stretchers and dozens of medical personnel or volunteers. People were handing out bottles of water and we saw some people who must have come over on ferries, they were covered in white dust. But that was all we saw. All those medical supplies and personnel and no one to treat. Back home, on the balcony of my apartment, I looked across the river at the Chelsea Piers complex. Around 4 or 5pm, I saw a convoy of what looked like Coca-Cola trucks (the refrigerated kind) drive up the West Side Highway and pull into the complex. Why were they there? My mind immediately went to the worst possible place and stayed there. That evening the streets of Hoboken were packed with people and buses jammed with people kept passing us on the main street. They must have been coming from the ferry terminal north of Hoboken, and being taken to the train station so that they could get home on NJ Transit, or be taken to other destinations for the night. I woke to a phone call from my brother who travels a great deal. "Put on CNN,? he said. As a parent of infants I was still sleepy @ 9am and struggled to locate the channel somewhere on my cable. While trying I asked where he was and why it was so important to tune the television in. "You wont believe what just happened in New York!" Of course, the rest is TRULY history. I was at home all day/night/day riveted to the television with my 7-month-old twins. Riley and Wills played happily crawling on the floor in front of the television. They knew something was wrong with me. They kept looking at me crying. I worried for my friends working in New York. I worried for my husband, who often drives past New York City and who was out driving that day. I worried for everyone and have not stopped since. My speechless neighbor came to my door-we were both hoping for a moment of human contact. She is also a stay-at-home mom, but her kids were in school. She struggled with going to pick them up-she chose not to be an alarmist. Unfortunately, she later found out that her kids were of the very few remaining in the classrooms and no teacher gave anyone an explanation as to why other parents were coming to pull their children from a day of classes. She stayed long enough in my living room to watch in horror as the North Tower crumbled in front of our eyes. Her choice to head home was an unusual fear that we all had about staying close to our phone- in case someone needed us. We are not dignitaries, no one especially important needed us that day-just our family members-and that in itself was a blessing. During the course of the longest day of my life, I spoke to each member of my family. I wanted to hear all of their voices and know that they were all right. I felt guilty being able to do that. Guilty because I knew that so many would not be enjoying such a privilege because of the tragedy that had unfolded in front of our eyes. We felt an eerie quiet overhead. We are on the flight pattern to Philadelphia International Airport. There were NO planes rumbling overhead. To this day, when we do hear a plane, my babies and I say: ?God bless you airplane.? They will grow up to think this is a natural response to hearing a plane overhead, much like saying the same when someone sneezes. It was something we took for granted until that day. I try to take nothing for granted since then. I have heard so many stories from friends. ?I was almost on that flight.? ?I was working in the other side of the Pentagon.? ?I watched the towers crumble right in front of my eyes.? Amazing stories from people/friends of simple survival, I never imagined anything like this would happen in my lifetime. How na?ve I was. How blessed I am to have grown up in the generation I did. I cannot believe that I have a story now. One that starts with, ?I remember exactly what I was doing when?? I thought that was held aside for those that remembered JFK being shot. I cannot believe that I have witnessed such horrors on television. I went to my neighbor?s today for my 9/11 hug. We were much calmer this year. We were worried what they might be sharing with her children in school. Yet, I thought, how many times in my 37 years have I seen a film loop of the Hindenburg crash? How many times have I seen horrific images of Nazi concentration camps? How many times have I seen footage of President Kennedy being shot? All the times that I watched these things, I had little sense of anything but horrible history. Now, it is less historic to me, it is more a sense of bearing witness to the decay of something we have held so dear and taken for granted. Today my 19-month-old babies knew something was wrong. I was relieved to see some of the wonderful stories of heroism survival and the beginnings of closure. My son laid his head in my lap and patted me on the leg. My daughter brought me her favorite book. We shut off the horrible history and celebrated ?Pat the Bunny? together. Tell us your story: I had just arrived to work and had been sitting at my desk when a coworker came in and said she'd just heard that a plane had hit the world trade center. I searched the radio stations but couldn't find anything. Reports were sketchy at first and i couldn't find the real story so i logged onto CNN.com to see if they had anything. Finally on a radio station they were giving the story when suddenly the newscaster just said oh my god, a 2nd plane has hit the other world trade center. My work decided that anyone who didn't feel safe could leave. My ride home was filled with fear and uneasiness. I was on my cell phone with my friend asking if he'd heard anything new when the service just dropped. I had gotten to my friends house and there were a bunch of them already there. We sat around watching the news, watching what had happened and wondering how this could of happen. I've been scared before in my life but i've never felt this before. It baffled me that this happened. I was watching them replay the 2nd plane hit and all i could feel was sorrow for the people on those planes. It sickens me that some person of the same genus as us could be this sick and twisted. And to have followers who think the same is just terrible. The thoughts that must have been going through the passengers and the workers in the building i can't even imagine. This after all is America, the land of the free, and suddenly it had turned to the land of the frightened. I wasn't sure of what i could do but i kept hearing that people were hurt and there was a shortage of blood. I went to the hospital with my friends and gave my donation. The weeks following it were very frightening. When the anthrax scare started it affected me alot because my job is as a mailroom coordinator, which requires me to open each piece of mail that comes into our building and get it to its destination. When it all happened my work provided me with everything i'd need but i still felt scared because of everything. To the families and friends i'm sorry for your loss. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was teaching fifth and sixth grade in a Catholic school (St. Matthew's). First, a teacher came to my room and said that Sr. Helen was watching TV while her first grade class was at their "special" and an airplane crashed into the World Trade Center. I knew this wasn't possible. What seemed like a short time later, the principal came and told me that a second plane had crashed into the second building and not to tell the students anything except to pray. I waited until time had passed, and then told the students that a bad thing had happened and we needed to pray for a lot of people. Then we had a bomb scare (a common thing in Syracuse schools at the time) and all walked over to the church, but this time it was much more frightening. Many parents came to collect their children, but we still weren't allowed to tell them anything -- instead, most found out from their school bus drivers on the way home! Because I taught Social Studies to the two fifth and two sixth grade classes, the next day we discussed the events as much as possible, even though by the fourth class I really wanted it to be over. I had them, as a project, find ways to record and process, and these were later presented during class. Many created videotape interviews, and others created written materials, the latter of which I have copies of and may type in for this archive. Actually, I still have two "Hi8" video reports because I was never able to view them. I put on the walls outside my classroom large pieces of construction paper with heading such as "Flight 11" and "Pentagon" and students and visitors wrote messages to the deceased. I also created a poster with a pledge on it that many people signed voluntarily, after which I took it to a local mosque (at Syracuse University). I was vacationing in Florida with my best friend Colleen when all hell broke loose. I can remember her coming into the room and saying to turn on the TV becasue the Twin Towers were hit by airplanes. I was in complete shock. I could not believe what I was seeing. Being from New Jersey I tried to call my Mom and could not get through for over 2 hours. When I finally did.... I just broke down and started to cry. I have never wanted to be home so badly. The rest of the day was a blur... but I know I could not break away from the TV. All I did was watch the coverage on the Towers, The Pentagon, and the crash in Pennsylvania. Colleen and I deceided to go out to dinner to Fridays that night becasue in Orlando that was about the only thing open... everything else was shut down. People who were out asked us if we were from around the area and we said No.. New Jersey.. they just looked at us and said... we are so sorry. That made us realize that we needed to get home. The next day we went back and forth with the idea of waiting for a plane or driving the rental car we had back to NJ, or just waiting it out and spend time in Florida while the airplanes were still grounded. We watched TV some more that day and then went for a drive. We were in a store picking up a newspaper and again someone asked us where we were from..... and again we got the same look of sadness and the same I am so sorry for the both of you. They must have seen it in our faces that we were heartbroken. We got back to the hotel and I called my parents. My father wanted me to be home with my family more than anything else.. becasue at this point noone knew what was going to happen next. My father told me that he was going to go to Ground Zero the next day and VOLUNTEER his time.... he has been a ironworker for Local #373 for over 25 years. He felt he neede to be doing something for all the missing people. Well when I heard that I knew I needed to get home. Colleen and I packed our bags...got in the car and left Florida at 8:00 the night of Sept 12. We never thought twice about our decision... we knew what we needed to do and where we needed to be. We drove staright through and arrived in Philadelphia at 12.00 the afternoon of the 13th. We dropped off the rental car in a deserted airport and drove home to Forked River, NJ. I could not sleep when I got home all I wanted to do was get a phone call from my father saying he was OK. That call came later that night.. words can not express how I felt or what my father seemed to be feeling. He was there for 3 dyas...... volunteering his time and working in the line amongst Jersey City Firefighters. He came home a different man....... he is usually so strong and you could always see the smile in his eyes. When he came home he was covered in dust and ash from head to toe...... his eyes and a certain look to them and he was just so tired. You could tell this was a man who had seen things no person should ever have to see. I have a new sense of the word HERO now... and my father along with all the people on 9/11 fit that name to me. The firefighters, policemen, port authority cops, the people in the towers, the people in the pentagon, all of the rescue workers and emergency personnel, the heroes that stopped the terrorists on the plane. I left at 8:30, as usual, for class that morning, stopping to take care of an errand before going on to class. Following my usual routine, I parked in the graduate student lot and crossed the street to the Baptist Student Union (BSU) on campus. This place was my second home while in college, and I went there every day to ?hang out? until my class started at 9:30. The only thing I remember as different that morning was that I had the car radio off and was enjoying some peace and quiet during the ride to campus. Today?s arrival on campus was different. My roommate, who had left 10 minutes after me and was parked at the BSU, came running up to me. ?A plane flew into one of the World Trade Center towers,? she shouted at me, surprised by what had happened. Thinking it was some accident or error, we headed into the building and turned on the TV. Along with two of the organization?s campus ministers who also arrived at about the same time, we watched the first tower burning and watched in horror as the second tower was hit right before our own eyes. I cannot tell you exactly how I felt at that moment, but I can say that I will never forget that moment. I?m still not sure what hit first ? anger, shock, sadness, fear, or maybe it was all of those. How could anyone willingly do this? I wondered. Who could intentionally seek to take any so many innocent lives? I also struggled with my questions to God ? why? I am a Christian and believe that a purpose lies in everything, but at that moment, I wasn?t sure I understood what it was. Despite our feelings, class and exams at 9:30 for both my roommate and me required us to go to class. I can look back now and say that was the hardest test I have even had to take, and I can?t even remember now what it covered. In the middle of my exam, the professor told us of the attack on the Pentagon and said that if anyone needed to leave, he or she was free to go?.might have been a better idea to let us go sooner, since it was difficult to concentrate. The rest of the day was pretty much a blur?calling family in Atlanta and up North to make sure everyone was okay, waiting in line to give blood only to find a one to two week wait, seeing the faces at BSU gathered around the television set, saddened and confused. My parents and others in their generation talk about remembering exactly where they were and what they were doing when President Kennedy was assassinated. It was understandably a painful memory, but I didn?t really understand until one year ago today. I remember so much of that day because our lives as Americans changed one year ago. I realize now that we are not exempt from terror, and it hurts to think that people suffer through this daily around the world. I will remember that day as long as I live and be grateful every day that I am alive and able to enjoy my freedoms as an American. I don?t know that I really appreciated what it means to live here until now, and my hope is that this memory will never let me forget. I listened to them as they Screamed a 2nd one hit, When I got to work I was kinda freaked out because all i could think of is that I work 3 miles from Daddy Bush's house. Knowing that many Arabs hate him I could just imagine Houston being a target as well. As a Single Mother of two teenage boys all I wanted to do was go home and get my boys. The School's were very gracious as they let my kids call me from school, as they were worried about me knowing where I worked. When we all got home that night we had our own prayer vigil in our living room. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am the department secretary. I arrived a few minutes early for work on the morning of September 11, 2001. Several of the firefighters were gathered around the TV located in the livingroom/diningroom. I was sitting at the dining table reading the morning newspaper when I heard one of the guys say "that looks like an airplane just struck the World Trade Center". I glanced up and thought they were watching a movie or something. I turned back to my paper. Then they turned the volume up on the TV and I looked up again and realized this is not a show, this is for real. We were all on our feet in front of the TV. It seemed like only a few minutes later a second plane hit and needless to say for the rest of the day except for running calls and they were even few that day we were all in front of the TV. It just seemed like the impossible had taken place. I think we were all filled with a flood of emotions. I called my husband at his work and they had not heard about it yet. I called my daughter at her work and they had not heard about it yet. Lucky me I work for a Fire Department and they stay abreast of the news. That evening my husband and I watched TV until we could not hold our eyes open anymore. For days and weeks to come that is all we watched on TV. We wept, we prayed, we went to vigilantes. We didn't know anyone personally that was involved in this tragic event, but we felt like we knew them and mourned the loss as if it were our very own. One year later, we are still mourning and holding commerative memorial services. I hope that someday we will put the event truly in the past and be able to move on knowing that we will strive to never let this happen on our homeland again. I have found my peace and comfort in God. I pray for all those who are bitter that they will find their peace, comfort and strength to go on in God Almighty.
