Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 began like any other day for me...I dressed and drove to Belleview High School, where I was working as a secretary in the Media Center. At the time the first plane crashed into the tower of the World Trade Center, I was in the office to pick up some things for the Media Center. Along with several guidance counselors and secretaries, I watched in horror as the first plane struck. We all thought it was some sort of bizarre accident...I remember running back across the campus to the Media Center to turn the television on to CNN. Within a very few minutes, the second plane struck the other tower. We watched in disbelief as the commentators pointed at the smoke and flames that now billowed from both towers. Students filed out of classrooms as the bell rung for classes to change...some stayed in the Media Center to gather with the Media Specialists and myself to watch this awful story unfold. By the time the third plane struck the Pentagon, it began to feel like it might be the end of the world! Many students now filled the Media Center...watching, crying, some of them hugging friends who had relatives in the Towers, some praying quietly. I ran to the phone to call home and let my husband know what was happening. I asked him not to tell my 14 year old daughter, wanting to explain to her myself, not wanting her to be afraid without me home to hold her. My husband could not believe what I was telling him...we quickly finished our hurried conversation so that I could return to the news. I cannot describe the horror I still feel when I close my eyes...I can still see the images of the planes crashing into the buildings, the people jumping from windows, the faces of the people as they ran from the area. As the towers fell, my tears did also...and as I stood there weeping, the Pledge of Allegiance began to play over the school's loudspeaker. My librarian was so overcome that she could not lead the students in reciting the Pledge. I was barely able to speak past the lump in my own throat. Never had those familiar words meant so much to me. In the days that followed, the Media Center's television was constantly tuned in to CNN so that we could participate, from a distance, in the memorial services, public addresses and prayer vigils that occurred in the wake of these horrendous attacks. Today, I prayed for all of the families that lost loved ones in the attacks, to find peace and healing, to never forget that in the darkest days of America's recent history, we saw the light of America shine its very brightest...in the heroes who perished saving the lives of others, in the courage that made America great. Tell us your story: i was just getting up at 12 and i found out later that day that it happened before then but as i turned on the tv is when i found out what happened and it took away my breath for what seemed like hours. i couldnt even stand. i thought at that moment that the Lord came back and took every one but me and i was terrified. i cried for hours and watched in terrer as the story unfolded even more. as the hours went by i seen things that i never imagined would ever happen here but i did see a country come together with a strength that hasnt been seen for a long time and i seen a president rise up and take charge. even after a year i still cant imagine the devastation that it has made. yea i am still thankful that i am alive but i am still sadden at all those family and friends that lost loved one in the plans and the pentagon and the towers and i am sorry for all the countiers that lost peole in this great tragedy. i am also even more thankful for all the police officers and fire firters and the paramedics. My roommates boyfriend came charging in my room talking about people hijacking airplanes. He was a pilot for Frontier Airlines at the Denver International Airport. Having been born and raised in Queens, NY I had been to the WTC and surrounding area countless times. I was absolutely silent but completely glued to the TV screen from the time the first plane hit. I immediately recognized the castrophic enormity these events had as they unfolded. I remember praying and calling my Pastor because I knew I needed to fill my spiritual being. Although I was able to get in touch with my immediate family I also prayed for the families of all the people that were not going to see their loved ones again. I felt this overwhelming sense of grief and despair for all the families and not just my own. My co-workers went back to their classes and I was unable to understand, how they didn't understand, that history was changing right before our eyes. The class instructor just continued as if nothing was happening. That really hurt me because we have to learn that this world is so much bigger than our individual lives. After seeing the news reports that night, the instructor left me a voice mail apologizing for her actions that day. She said she now realized why I was so upset but she did not have a perspective on the situation until watching the news reports and hearing of all the damages and loss of life. To say I am pro-military is an understatement. However, I've never lived personally during catastrophic times, other than the unpopular war: Viet Nam. I am a "baby boomer", born in 1949. Upon visualizing these live terrorist attacks on television, like most others, we were in shock and could not comprehend what we were seeing. And, unlike previous generations before me, I knew my experience was undeniably different in that this was the first attack on American soil in the history of our nation by foreigners. History was in the making and I was living through it. Aware of the politics and the "lack of rules of engagement" perpetrated by religious fanatics, it became clear to me that this will not be a conventional war and that the forthcoming events in human history will be unprecedented. I thought of the Crusades of early centuries, thinking of all those who died in the name of Christianity. Was this so different? Yes, the enemy succeeded in planting the seeds of fear in me. However, the dynamic of a united front amongst my fellow Southern Americans {I'm a Yankee living in the southern US}, the dynamic of a united front, comradeship, and solidarity, moved me emotionally. Living in the South now [even after 25 years] made me feel a belongingness to my people despite our different origins at these critical endless moments. Our pot has melted and I am better for it, at the price of aggression, destruction and loss of innocent life. When God closes a door, He always opens a window. We are a people strong in spirit and determination. Thank God for George W. Bush, able President of the United States. Tell us your story: It was a clear Spring day in Rotorua New Zealand, and I was watching the news of the day, this was broken into with a chilling message that the United States had been attcked, and then the news went over to New York, showing us the first plane going into the First tower. I watched it in horror as the plane went into the building. My first thought was the people that were in that building, then the second plane went into the other tower. I said this is horrible and planes were not in the air space, who would do this to innocent people. Then it should the Pentagon and the damage done to it. Then the other plane that was coming in from pennsylvania and then it crashed. We were stunned, and all programmes were cancelled as the t.v. covered the tragedy. We watched in horror and disbelief of the buildings collapsed, and people and firemen plus the New York police went into action. For the rest of the day and the night the t.v. showed what was happening in New York. I have been to America, and enjoyed it immensely, plus going to New York and also been into the Pentagon. We could not do anything that day as we were numb from shock and disbelief. I still feel guilty, as I could do nothing for the people in New York and Washington D.C. as the true horror is still with me. At least all in New Zealand went and started a fund for the people that died that day and also the Firemen and Policemen, plus the ones that were saved from the Towers, and this was collected from all over New Zealand and handed over to the American Embassy in Wellington New Zealand. We will never forget that day, and am glad that I had the chance to get to America and see New York and also the twin Towers. I just hope that notjing like this happens again to America. He called and told me to turn it over to a regular channel. All I could do when I saw what was happening was sit on my living room floor, hold my 9 month old daughter and cry. My God, this is America - these things don't happen here! Even though I was safe in my small Iowa town, in the confines of my own home I felt so vulnerable. The mother's of the other two children I watch called, knowing that their kids were fine, but just needed to be reconfirmed of that fact and to hear their small voices. My best friend, Robbie was watching the news on Channel 26(7.:40am), when she said "Chris, an airplane has just crashed into one of the Towers in New York". I ran to the living room and as we watched in disbelief, we watched as the second airplane crashed into the other tower. Robbie and I, immediately, begin to cry and pray. Then, we begin to question, who would do such an unspeakable, horrifying and heartless thing and why? We put all out gear on, Kelvlar Helmet,Flack ves,Canteens and jumped on the duce to head out to the firing range. It was a beautiful morning in Texas, that Texas sky is remarkable. I was nervous and im sure the 40 airman around me were to. When we got there we hopped off the duce, and marched to the practice range, to where we would throw practice smoke gernandes. This was a procedure to weed out anyone that we be a danger to the flight. We all got to throw practice. Then the insructure (a very big, black,intimidating Master Seargent) told us all to prepare to march up to live firing range. The instucters all carried radios, kinda like a walkie talkie, to keep in touch with eachother. I remember feeling so small, like a little kid ,looking up to this Msgt as I overheard on the portable radio that we just went in to FPcon DELTA. Military terms there are 4 Force Protction conditions(FPcon)Alpha,Bravo,Charlie and Delta, I was confused, but my leaders knew that something terrible had happened. We continued with our training and they sent groups of 5 airman to throw at the range. We got 10(including me) to throw before they cancelled training. They briefed us that 2 planes had hit the WTC and one hit the pentagon. With all our gear on, the mood and setting I felt like we were going to war right then and there. We got on the duce and headed back to our dorms at Camp Bullis, where we would be on lockdown for the next 2 weeks. We all knew something terrible happened to our country, and we all felt so much pride and honor to be the ones to defend it. There isint a day that goes by I dont think of 9/11. When I prepare for work and I button up my BDU's and put my boots on. When I go put that 9mm on my hip or salute the Colonel when he walks by me. I remember why I do this everyday, to defend you. We cant change what happened but WE WILL change what does happen. I told him to stop playing with me. He said if I did not believe him, to turn on the radio or search the web. No sooner then he said that, a news flash came over the radio telling about the plane. I immediately started doing a mental accounting of all my loved ones. When I could not reach those I was not sure of by phone, I sent out emails. I called my husband back to tell him my building was evacuating and that I was going to pick up our daughter from daycare. Upon learning that two of my coworkers were ambivalent about using the Metro system to get home, another coworker and I decided to drive them. Once my loved ones in my immediate area were home, I just vegged for the rest of the day. I could not watch tv, nor listen to the radio. I just couldn't. Now one year later, I find myself glued to the tv watching all the programs and voraciously reading all materials that I can. I feel so numb. I usually listen to one of funny wake you up morning radio stations as was the case that morning. Instead of hearing laughter and music, I was surprised to hear the urgency and the fear in the broadcaster's voice. As soon as I was at my desk my wife called me at work and told me to get to a TV. I just stood there in disbelief. It looked like a Hollywood movie, but it surely was not. The Air Force immediately went to Delta, the highest state of alert. They sent non-essantial personel home for three days. That was where I was just glued to the major news stations. It was like dejavue for me. I remember being in High School orchestra in 1963 when the anouncement of JFK's assaination came over the school loudspeaker. I thought that that was worst news that I could ever hear. That statement was what my 23 year old daughter said to me on the phone. "Yea right", was my answer. "Turn the TV on mom!" I turned in on in time , to see the second tower hit. It was absolutely surreal, like some sick movie. My eyes could not believe what i was seeing. My daughter came in, my husband got up, and the three of us just sat there stunned at what we were watching. A friend of mine called on the phone, and said that parents were rushing to school to pick up there kids, and she was on the way to pick up hers. I debated back and forth with my husband what to do, and we decided that the best thing was to get our 13, and 14 year old and bring them home. I was fully expected to see a panicked office at the school, but driving the 15 minutes there, there was an unusual stillness in the air. I got to the school and the parking lot was quiet. I went in the school, and a lone parent was walking down the hallway. No one was talking. The sign out book was full of parents signatures for the day, simply stated, "Bombing". The vantage point of the smoking building made me think it was a tower a building in Warsaw, Poland! I did not see the other tower nor did I see the river. And this is from a former New Yorker! I was dumbstruck when it I found out it was the Twin Towers. I could not believe that two airplanes had slammed into it. then i heard reports of the Pentagon building and then a firth plane had crashed. I truly thought the world had gone mad. Nothing made sense. Up until that morning, I was in a wheelchair and using crutches. I was recuperating from a fractured leg. That morning i had decided to go into work. I was an assitant manager from British Airways at Miami Airport and i thought if there was ever a day that they needed my services, it was that day. I was not needed. The airport was empty except for the rest of the numb airport employees. Miami airport is full of employees who transfered from NYC, so it was even more somber. I am embarrassed to say that the Twin Towers eclipsed those horrible attrocities in Washington and onboard UA93 because this happened in the city of our youth, where many of our families still reside. I could not help but feel useless! What could I do? How could I help those poor people in NYC, Washington and Pennsylvania. I couldn't. In the months that followed, I became frightened that i would be laid off. What would I do? I consoled myself that i still had a life to worry about. Then I started thinking of my back-up plan. Since I am being told to do something else, I decided to pursue a whole new career in nursing! Well, i di d NOT get laid off, and frankly, I was upset. the more i thought about it, the more I wanted to do it. To make a long story short, the compnay looked for volunteers to leave, and I jumped at the opportunity. At 44 years old, i have left the white colar airline management field and am in school taking anatomy and chemistry to get myself set for a worthwhile career! I dedicate my new life to the men, women and children who lost their lives so senselessly and so horribly. I hope the knowledge that these souls are at peace is some comfort to those who miss them. Tell us your story: well i woke up up in the morning and turned on the tv, and thought what was all the stuff about the world trade center and everything. i probably watched the tv for about five hours i ws close to being in tears about what had happened that morning. i was scared that these people would also come to iowa and so whenever i heard a plane i would run outside of my house and look up in the sky to make sure it wasn't anything that was of any threat to me. It was just a really scary thing thaat had happened to make a long story short. i wfelt really bad about the people who had died especially those little kids. so the next day i went to des moines iowa and signed up for the army and just happened to be on probation and they wouldn't let me in until i got off. so i am waiting until november when i get off of probation to sign up. but that is my story and those are my feelings about it. and i also want to thank all the helpers like the firemen, rescuers, military, police and people that i haven't heard thanks to and tha is the doctors who helped save some lives, god bless to all of you and may god be with you. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember receiving an email from a friend to hurry and turn on a tv because the WTC had just been hit by a plane. It sounded so unreal and before it had a chance to sink in, it echoed from an office down the hall and then into the reception area of our office. We turned on the tv, a small black & white in the breakroom, and were all stunned, speechless and confused. I couldn't believe what was happening. As our world turned upside down we were able to visually replay the first incident when the 2nd plane hit. This was so unreal it did not register for several minutes. I am in the business of property management and our first reaction was how do you get that many people down a stairwell - we could only imagine the chaos, then our next question was could the buildings sustain this sort of damage. Then our question was answered moments later when the most horrific scene unfolded before our eyes, as we witnessed these 2 beautiful buildings fall to the ground. Then we heard of the Pentagon and Pennsylvania and it was so completely unimaginable, it was as if a deadly earthquake had shook the entire Earth and we suddenly were not sure of the ground beneath us. I immediately questioned my own safety. I remember feeling so much that I almost felt numb - I felt as if the world was coming unwound before my very eyes. I immediately called my husband who works graveyard shift to pick up the children from school - I have 2. I remember thinking was this over or just beginning. Could we be next (Houston) - a large oil & gas city, the Port of Houston, I worked in a high-rise building filled with oil & gas companies (that all shut down for the day and sent their people home). Then we went home and my children looked to me for explanations, "why Mom?" and "are we okay?". I had to be honest, I didn't know why and wasn't sure if we were safe. We shared our fears, we shared many tears but we hugged most of all and all slept in the same bed that night. We watched the tv and cried with the victims and survivors. It was so heartbreaking to have to try to explain this sort of evil to a 12 and 6 year old. We prayed for everyone that night, especially the children whose moms and dads were not going to be coming home. I remember thinking that this will be a horrible story we lived through and our grandchildren will learn about in school but will need to learn from us how we all felt. I will never forget where I was, physically or emotionally. We will never be the same but somehow we were all brought closer together as a nation and each stronger to our faiths.
