Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Susan Tucker-Coelho and I have been a music teacher at the George R. Austin Middle School in Lakeville, Massachusetts for 27 years. As years have passed, I have noticed an increased lack of self respect amongst my children along with increased disrespect for those around them. One of my biggest goals as their teacher is to be able to teach children who enter my classroom that they all have a goodness and talent within them. I have taken many workshops to obtain the skills that I have hoped to gain in order to diffuse angry behavior and infuse a sense of self confidence through the activities in my music classroom and choirs. Within myself, however, I really did feel that the children that I saw every day had lost a sense of depth, character, commitment and ambition to overcome difficult obstacles. Too often, I was feeling that the children in my classes simply had little appreciation of all of the great oportunities at their disposal and being rude and totally indifferent was becoming more and more the norm. On the morning of September 11th, several colleagues of mine slipped into my classroom with hints of what was happening. I tried to acess the internet in between classes, only to find that our principal had turned it off for fear of the children finding out this shocking news unexpectedly. During my first free period, two members of my department and I turned on a radio in one of our classrooms and we felt that we truly were witnessing our country being obliterated. Following that, our principal had issued a hand delivered message relaying the facts to us and told us that we were to teach as normally as possible and that she would call the children together at the end of the day to explain to them what had happened. It was so hard to teach. I wanted to cry as I looked at their faces and realized how precious these children were and I also wondered what part, if any, of our country would be left for them. I wondered if these children would even fully grasp the severity of what had happened. The day came to an end. The children listened to our principal explain what had happened. There really was not a lot of reaction. I thought that these chldren probably were most concerned that all of this meant their trip to the mall or their T.V. shows would be cancelled. I felt that their concerns would be only about the latest rap group or if their boyfriend would call that night. The following morning, as I drove past my students at their bus stops, I was amazed. All of the chldren were waving American Flags, had clothing of red white and blue, had pictures of the American Eagle and of the American Flag taped quickly onto thier binders. I felt so proud. The determination on their faces as they exited the buses was enough to make any American proud. That morning, during first period class, our principal asked that we all stop to say the Pledge of Allegiance in honor of the great tragedy. My classroom had no flag. A boy in my room who had been a serious discipline issue all year pulled a small American Flag out ofhis book bag. Richard held up his tiny flag, stood on a chair and said that he was proud to be standing up for his country. We said the Pledge of Allegiance.I praised Richard and the class applauded him when we were done. My worst fears about our future were gone. My doubts about the character of our children were forever changed. I was never so proud. Out there in lazy, apathetic suburbia, we have children filled with more character and dedication than you would ever imagine. The American dream will ALWAYS be alive and well. Our children will rise to the most difficult of challenges with more courage and determination than we ever dreamed. When the chips are down, we know that our next generation will be there and just as strong, if not stronger, than we. God has blessed America! I thought it was an accident and a small plane... short time after another text came in "second plane hit"...I stopped the car and I could actually see that the whole city was beginning to "slow down"... even though Copenhagen is like many thousand miles away everything just stopped... I went into a pub where I parked my car and watched the tv for 5 hours... I just couldnt believe it... Later Ive been reading, seeing and hearing so much about it and its just so terrible... those guys up there... I cannot imagine and I feel so sorry for both them and their familiy... Tell us your story: "The Week the Air Stood Still" Its hard to believe its been five years and people still ask me what I was doing on September 11th, 2001. That question stirs up a lot of emotion for me as those events were just the beginning of a new life for me, as an American, a pilot and a newlywed husband. My wife and I were married on Friday September 14th at the end of that fateful week. I know a lot of people in this industry that have stories about their experiences last fall. These are some of the events of what was supposed to be the happiest time of my life. The week got off to a pretty normal start. Monday basically consisted of renewing my FAA First Class Airmans medical exam and final preparations for my upcoming wedding at the end of the week (9/14). Monday night it was business as usual. I couldnt wait to get to Indianapolis (IND) to share more of my wedding details with my friends at work. I departed Cleveland (CLE) on time at 315AM. During the three hour layover in Indianapolis things were very upbeat for a Monday while my co-workers and I discussed the events of my wedding day. The outbound load for the return trip home was heavy as usual, but nonetheless I was on my way home to continue the countdown. What a beautiful day. Clear blue skies and excellent visibility allowing you to see for miles. The mission was rolling along as well as could be expected. About thirty minutes out of Cleveland I was monitoring the company frequency and heard several flights calling the ramp in Cleveland inquiring about parking space. This was very odd since I was the only flight due to arrive there. The word coming down the radio was that New York had a ground stop and no flights were coming or going from the area. The first thing I thought was maybe hurricane / tropical storm Erin had blown back towards the coast causing weather delays. That would have been a blessing given the events that followed. Rumors of an airliner being hijacked in New York airspace began to litter the airwaves and ATC began suggesting to all flights heading east to plan on an alternate airport. The ground stop now included Boston. Soon came the strangest thing Ive ever heard in my fifteen years of flying. It was official, the situation of a national emergency was relayed by ATC to all flights and everyone must land...EVERYBODY. All anybody knew was that two commercial airliners had been hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center in New York. I remember an airline pilot ask what type of aircraft? I cant say, was the response from the controller. Chills ran up and down my spine as I could only imagine the scene in New York while I continued to my destination. Fortunately for me I was able to make it back home to Cleveland, unlike a lot of my co-workers who were stranded in different cities for the next several days. All of the action really infuriated me and even the sense of being violated overcame me as the industry that I take great pride in representing had literally been raped, not to mention our great nation had been attacked. My thoughts were instantly cast upon the crews of those aircraft, whose pride and dignity they had in their careers and the hard work it took to get them there had fallen victim to mindless cowards. During my approach into Cleveland, the crew of a Delta Airlines flight behind apparently had a suspicion about a possible situation onboard their aircraft. They were next for the field. After I landed, FAA, police and other emergency vehicles passed me on the taxiway and quickly surrounded the Delta 767 (Flight 1989)which had landed right behind me. A subsequent search of that plane showed no signs of a possible hijacking or bomb. Upon arriving at the freight ramp I secured the airplane and thats when the relief pilot told me about the Pentagon being hit by a third jet. All I could think of was what the hell was going on? I left the airport after closing out my flight and what I saw next could simply be described as chaos. There were police and fire trucks everywhere, prospective passengers walking across the freeway entrance ramps pulling their luggage behind them and traffic jammed for miles. The airport in Cleveland was locked down. It appeared that all of the action was on the east coast, but no chances were being taken anywhere. It was with great disbelief that I listened to the radio on my way home, both towers of the World Trade Center collapsing and now a fourth airliner had crashed outside of Pittsburgh, apparently on its way toward Washington, DC. My cell phone rang continuously with calls concerning my own personal safety. I was fine, but had to get home and see the news. Driving through downtown Cleveland I noticed our skyline and took pride as we have the tallest building between Chicago and New York City, now those in New York were gone. My fiancée had slept through the mornings horror story, which is good since she would have been consumed with worry. Our wedding was just three days away. She couldnt believe the news as I recapped the morning events to her and we watched the news. After viewing a timeline of events, its interesting to note that the airliner that crashed in Pennsylvania was almost directly 15,000 feet above me when it made its doomed turn back to the east under the control of hijackers. This finally brought reality crashing down on me realizing just how close I was to tragic history. Aviation was essentially grounded for the next two days as the search for answers continued. Friday September 14th, 2001, our wedding day. How could we celebrate what should be the happiest day of our lives when thousands of lives had been lost just days before to senseless acts of terrorism? It was very difficult to truly be happy that day, but just like the rest of our country we carried on never forgetting the victims of that day as we held a moment of silence during our reception and all of the men in our wedding party wore US flags on their lapels. I am very proud to say that the company I work for and the customer we represent were the first air carriers to take back to the skies continuing to provide our reliable service, undaunted by cowardly acts of terrorism against our nation and air transportation system. As pilots, we sometimes give air traffic controllers a lot of grief, but after September 11th and the excellent job they did getting EVERY aircraft over the United States on the ground I congratulate them on a job very well done. They held it all together and all we, as flight crews, had to do was land. All of this, I believe, symbolizes our people and our national pride. We will not succumb to such acts, rather we will continue to be the foundation of liberty and freedom throughout the world. As a person and an aviator I will never forget where I was on September 11th, 2001, the day that our lives changed. God Bless America ! I was in my sekent period study hall when my teacher got a phone call. He was in shock and didn't say anything at all. He just hung up the phone and turned on the television. The World Trade Center was smoldering with a lot of smoke. Then as we turned up the volume we had heard that a plane had been hijacked and had crashed into the north tower at 8:48 a.m. We had to go to our next class and my next class was Global Studies. When we got there we had heard that a second plane crashed into the south tower eighteen minutes later. Then a third plane was seen over the Pentagon and crashed down into the western part of the Pentagon. A fourth plane was forced down by the passengers in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. In all 266 people perished in the four planes and several others died elsewhere. When I got home my mother had heard something on this radio station and thought that they were just kidding around. Then my aunt called my mother and asked her if she had heard anything about the crashes. There were people jumping from buildings. People were fleeing from the scene like the world was coming to an end. Some Americans feel they are in a war with an enemy they do not even know. Today there is a lot more security in the airports which is a good thing. When Osama Bin Laden does another stunt like this one we will be ready for him. I am glad that we got more safety in airports today. In the country of Afghanistan there are U.S. troops over there trying to kill off all of the terrorism in that country. If Osama Bin Laden is not afraid to die like he said on his video tape that was on national television then he should come out of hiding and fight like a man. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat, but they have failed. I thought I would never see someone or some country use airplanes as a missile to fly into a building and kill themselves and a lot of people. The estimated number of American's death from the terrorism that struck the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the people on the airplanes was about 3,200. I have thanks to all of the FDNY firemen and the NYPD police who helped out in this tragedy. This is a day I will never forget and no one should. As I was walking up the block I looked towards my right and saw black smoke. I wasn't sure if they were the towers and I remember thinking " Oh my God there's a big fire in the building". I turned around and asked the girl behind me if that was the twin towers. She said yes, a plane had crashed into it. I said "what happened, was it an accident? She did not know. A car passed by and the girl asked if there was more news on the radio, on what had happened. We listened for about one minute. I started walking to work which was about 2 1/2 blocks away. I could not see the towers anymore because of the buildings. I walked past the work entrance and headed up the block because I knew that I could see the towers there across the river. I was turning right but I heard my boss calling me and telling me that making the left was a better view of what was happening. I could not believe what I was seeing. I tried calling my mom on my cell phone, it wasn't working. We stayed there a while watching but then I received a phone call at work-it was mom- and I walked the 1/2 block to my job. Suddenly I heard that one of the towers fell. I thought "no that can't be true." I ran back outside to confirm to myself that it wasn't true. All I saw was a bigger black cloud along with smoke. I could see the antennae on the other building and I kept repeating to myself "when the smoke clears, the building will still be there" over and over again. I returned back to my office because you really couldn't see anything. Then we heard that the 2nd tower had fallen, I ran back out to see, thinking there is no way that this is happening. My heart sank when I looked and I couldn't see that antennae, only black smoke. It was 10:30 am when I finally sat down at my desk. Work? I can't remember if I was able to work. There was just a feeling of helplessness, numbness. At noon my cousin Marcos called me and said that he would pick me up from work to get me home. I thought "Wow, my hero" We went to the 59 St bridge because his girlfriend Vanessa had to walk across the bridge from manhattan because there wasn't any kind of transportation to get home. It normally takes 40 minutes to get home by car. It took us 4 1/2 hours to get home and we were on the other side of the river where this terrible trajedy happened! Finally at 4:30 pm I was home with my family. I prayed and will still pray for everyone that was lost on that day and for everyone who lost someone. For all the cops, firemen and heroes. As I entered the gym i saw alot of people standing and gazing at the T.V screen. I asked myself "why do these people come to the gym and watch movies" I then went into the change room changed and started my workout. As I was working out I saw on the screen a plane flying into one of the buildings. I then said "I must be daydreaming that just didnt happen" moments later they showed it again and I then said it must be a moving. I was sitting with my friends in his class room while it happened. I was in Mr. Howard's class. Everythign seemed alright, I was laughing and having fun with my friends in class like every other day. Then I heard what happene, it didn't seem real. It was scary and unrealistic. That day was very scary and alerting to everyone that our country wasn't the big and bad country we thought we are...I think it made us bigger and stronger! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a police officer for Hapeville, Georgia. I was in downtown Atlanta for Grand Jury. When I got into my car going back to the station I turned on my radio. The first words I heard was Y106 and Rhubarb Jones saying "Folks this is a sad,sad day". Then told that a plane had flown into one of the twin towers and that a lot of people in New York did not even know it yet because of communication problems. I quickly went back to the station and when I entered the doors I learned that a second plane had hit the towers. My brother in Law is a piolt for ASA and I called my sister because I knew he was flying out that day. Thank God he was fine and had not flown anywhere near New York. We had Televisions on in different offices at the station and soon learned that the Pentagon and Penn. had also had planes go down. My first thoughts were my God I was in a Federal building in downtown Atlanta. Hapeville Police Dept. sits right at the Atlanta Airport. You can see planes taking off and landing all the time. Loop Road seperates the airport from us. I do not believe I have ever seen so many different departments come together so quickly. We all began to patrol that area. There was Clayton Co., City of Atlanta, College Park, East Point,and Hapeville. I remember as I drove up and down Loop Road how quiet it was and how solemn everything seemed. Just the quietness of no planes landing or taking off. It was a unheard of silence for this area. And the next few days would be no different. My primary job at Hapeville at the time was Juvenile Officer. The chief asked me to go to the Elementary School and the Catholic School and check on the students and talk with the principals. I walked through the schools and on the grounds. I told the staff at each school to keep doors and windows closed and if they saw anyone or anything suspicious to call immediately. The whole time I was at the school I thought of my six children and just prayed that they would be ok and that their guardian angels and the good Lord would look out for them. When I picked up my children from daycare and school that afternoon. My 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter had thought the planes had hit Atlanta and that it was all happening near me. I never realized until that moment what fear they had for me and my job. I tried to explain to them what had happened by changing the story around about the Grinch who tried to steal Christmas. I then heard a version of it on the radio. I thought well I guess we think a like. I am a single parent and me and my children are very close. I think this brought us a whole lot closer if that is possible. It makes us appreciate what we have and how quickly it can all be taken a way. My heart breaks for every person who lost someone on this day. I have shed many tears for these people and their families as I am sure most of the World has. There is a song that is I believe called "Lord I hope this Day is Good". Every time I hear it I think that is all any of us can hope for a good day with a little less crime and hate in the world. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When I look back on September 11th it is hard to believe that it has been a whole year. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was 15 years old, wearing a brown tanktop with the skyline of Chicago on it with my kacki skirt. I was working on a group project for chemistry before school even started and I remember someone running down the hall saying "The Pentagon has been Bombed!!" I have to admit that my first thought was, "oh great someone is running around school spreading horrible rumors about the Pentagon being bombed, man highschoolers can be so immature." But when I finally got to my first period class and Dr. Veach our principal came over the intercom and told us what had happened I couldn't believe it. Band was my first period class and ignoring what the principal had said about turning the tv off we all gathered around the big screen television and watched the news station in horror. Eventually one of our directors came out and turned the television off, but that didn't stop us. We just went searching for another tv and wheeled it into the drum room and crowded around it once again. Throughout the rest of the day I didn't have the freedom to watch the tv, but in every class all of our tests and quizzes were cancelled for the week and teachers were advised not to give homework that night. When I finally got home I sat in my chair in the living room and watched the tv until dinner time. After that I sat infront of the tv once again and watched until around 11pm when I finally had to drag myself away to go to sleep. They say every generation has its one major event in history that they will never forget. For once I was just hoping that our generation would never have to go through what the previous generations of ours did. But now I see things differently, we have become closer as a nation and I believe that everything that has happened God will use to make good. So now all we have to do is go on with our everyday lives and always remember what can happen when people start to hate eachother. Zero hour starts at eight o'clock usually, but today there was a faculty meeting. That meant that zero hour started at 8:20. I walked about that time after hearing some rumor about planes in the halls. I hadn't paid attention though. As i walked in, I saw that Mrs. Rosier and the half of the class that had arrived were crowded around something in the back of the room. As I walked closer, I saw it was a news broadcasting on T.V. There was some live-on-the-sceen footage of the World Trade Towers and a few replays of what had happened earlier. After of about fifteen to twenty minutes of watching the news, our principal came on the intercom and told all the teachers to turn off their T.V.s and get on with class. We were all extremely upset that we couldn't watch it anymore. It seemed that all day everyoe was in a trance that wouldn't break. It was a horrible experience. Tell us your story: I was at work when my mother called to tell me what happened and that a friend of the family, Stuart Meltzer, was trapped in the building. He had called his wife to say goodbye: "Honey, something terrible has happened. I don't think I'm going to make it. Take care of the children. I love you." I watched in disbelief as the towers crumbled, still holding a flicker of hope that people survived. On September 10th, I had given my notice at work so I could stay at home with my 6 month old baby. It was a tough decision with a big loss of income and I didn't know if it was the right one. After Sept. 11, I realized that I made the right decision. Life is what's important, not money nor possessions. Family, friends, and people are what keep us going. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: School started at 8:45 that morning, while the Canadian anthem played at 9:00 in-class like it usually does at my school. I arrived at school at 8:25 that morning. I left the house that morning with another normal day ahead of me. There was barely any news that morning, and everything seemed fine. Unfortunately, it wasn't. I first heard about the 9/11 terror attacks at my High School (Saint Pius) around 11:15 AM during my first senior year as a Grade 11 student. I was in my second class of the day when the school Vice Principle came on over the school P.A. and told everyone to remain in their classrooms and not to go home. At the time, many of the students (like myself) had not heard the horrific news and were clueless to what the Principle was talking about. The Principle briefly mentioned that "a horrific event" had taken place in the United States, but failed to inform us of any attacks. I started to assume that some type of mass shooting at a US high school was probably what the Principle was referring to. After the principle's message, everyone in the class (including myself) started to question the teacher. Everyone was curious to know what had happened in the United States. The teacher told us to stop asking her all at once, and give her a chance to tell us what she knew about this "horrific event". She told us that she heard that 3 planes had been hijacked and slammed into the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Some of us had no idea what the World Trade Center was, so she referred to it as the "Twin Towers Of New York". Those 5 words filled the entire classroom with shock and disbelief. I immediately started to think about what is must of been like for the people on board and pictured the hijackers in my mind. As the lunch bell rang 15 minutes later, I met 2 of my friends outside my classroom and all 3 of us agreed that we should go to someone's house to check it on television. So we walked to one of my friend's house which was about 5 or 6 minutes away. We talked about what we thought was happening on the way to my friend's house. One of my friends was still in disbelief that terrorists could slam a plane into the Pentagon. We arrived at my friend's house about 5 minutes after we left the school. We got in the door, walked into the livingroom, sat down, and turned on the television to CNN. The first image I saw when that television screen came on, was one image i'll never forget. I saw World Trade Center collapsing into the streets of Lower Manhattan. I knew it was a re-run of earlier footage because Aaron Brown (The CNN New York correspondent) mentioned that it was footage from earlier on. I constantly looked at my friends and said "This is unbelievable... Can you believe this?" I had no idea that it was this serious at first. My lunch was in the bag, but I was too disgusted to even think about eating at this point. The friend that took us to his house was on the phone for about 10 minutes after we turned on the television. Apparently some of his relatives were coming flying to Ottawa from Italy on that same day. My friend only realized this after we had turned on the television, and began calling his Mother and Father and asking them if they had any information on their flight or if they were okay. Neither parent was sure. I was watching and reading some of the information on the little scrolling ticker that you see on the bottom of the screen. Some of the headlines on that ticker read "President Bush moved to undisclosed location"... "Philadelphia landmarks evacuated"... "All NYC airports now closed." As I read more of these headlines, I became worried, and began to think that anything was possible at this point. Hell, half of the Eastern US was evacuated. After about 25-30 minutes of watching CNN, we decided to get back to school so that we could tell other people what we saw. As we left the house, I looked up at the sky with a sense of fear. At this point, I thought that anything could have happened. It was a beautiful weather day. It was about 21 or 22 (Celcius), and it was totally clear. On our way back, my friends were saying stuff like "Can't you see the US making Iraq one big parking lot?" We were dead serious about that question. As we walked through the school field back to the buildings, one of my friends said "If I see one plane, I am running." I then said "Don't worry, I don't think they'll attack us." But deep down, I was terrified. Once we got into the outside area of the school (the area in between the all the buildings where everyone hangs out at lunch) we began telling others what we saw. Many people live far from the school, so we were one of the few groups of people that saw it that lunch. I remember saying "You can actually see the towers falling apart onto the street." I had seen the footage of the tower collapsing, but I still had not seen footage of the planes going into the buildings. I didn't even know that there was footage of the planes going into the buildings. After about 10 minutes of telling other friends what we saw, the warning bell rang for third period (third period for seniors, but the start of junior lunch for the juniors). I was one of the first ones to arrive at my computer engineering class. The time was now about 12:25 PM. Once the entire class arrived, we began to work our "Bread board" activity that we had started the day before. The teacher didn't need to instruct us because the lesson was the same for the entire week. I began talking to one of my other friends in the class as we tried to work. I told him what I knew, and he told me what he knew. It was increasingly more difficult to work as I thought about it more and more. About 20 minutes into class, the teacher got a television working with an antenna. We tried picking up CTV, and managed to get a satisfactory signal. I saw Lloyd Robertson's face at first, then we started to get sound as someone adjusted the antenna. We heard him say something like "And now we have-- We have a video shot of the second plane going into the building." I thought "Oh my God." All of the sudden, they showed the Twin Towers. One was in flames, and one was still untouched. Then you could see this black object on the far right of the screen slowly work it's way to the center of the screen where the towers stood. Then you could see this big explosion from the other side. I remember a guy named Brandon looking up at me and saying "Holy crap, man." He was in disbelief, just like the rest of us. There were only about 5 or 6 of us around the television, but the class had close to 25 people. I told my friend to come over quick and take a look at what I was watching. It was still a little difficult to see every detail since the signal had a fair amount of static. After getting no work done during that class, I headed off to my last class of the day at 1:45 PM. Physical Education was the last class of the day. We were outside for class playing Frisbee Football. I played the first game, but after that, I began to think of the attacks again. The weather was still beautiful and was perfect. After we played a few games, it was close to 3:00 PM which is when school ends. I was so terrified, that I remember wondering what it would be like if a plane would hit our gym! I got changed, grabbed my stuff, and left the gym. I headed towards the parking for my drive home. While walking towards the parking lot, I looked at a few 30 story apartment buildings off to the East with the sun shining on them. I saw my Mother who was driving me home that day. I went over, hopped into the backseat of the van, and the first thing I remember saying to her was "So, you must have heard the news." She replied with "Of course. This is like a nightmare." On our way home, we had to stop at the grocery store to grab a bag of milk and a loaf of bread since we were out. I rarely like going into grocery stores, but I told my Mother that i'd go in with her because I wanted to ask her everything she had heard that day. I was getting on her nerves with all my wuestions while we were in the store. We went to the express line and quickly moved through. I remember my cashier asked my Mother a question about the attacks, but I do not remember what the question was. When we got home, I threw my bag onto my bed, grabbed a blank VHS tape, went downstairs, turned to CNN, and started recording. I spent the entire night watching CNN in my basement on our big screen. I didn't get any homework done, nor did I think of anything except the attacks. At supper, I ran upstairs, grabbed my plate, ran back downstairs, and kept watching. I put down my plate, and completely forgot about it. After 45 minutes, I realized that I hadn't touched my supper. I got through two "mouth-fulls" of corn, then stopped. I wasn't hungry. Around this time, CNN had breaking news that there were explosions in Kabul, Afghanistan. I can very well remember my Fathers saying "This could be the beginning of World War 3." My Father followed me downstairs when I had my supper earlier on. He watched television with me for the rest of the night. I watched and taped George Bush's speech to America. Around 10:45 PM, I decided to get some rest. I prepared for bed my brushing my teeth and doing everything that I usually do before bed. I had difficulty falling asleep that night. I finally remember falling asleep around 1:30 in the morning. When I woke up the next morning, it was close to 6:00 AM. It turned on my little television in my room, and noticed that every channel had live coverage, even at 5:45 in the morning. Tuesday, September 11, 2001 will be a day that I won't ever forget. Images of the World Trade Center on fire are embedded in my mind until the day I die. I find myself thinking about them every once in a while. As for the tapes that I recorded during 9/11: I still have them, but I haven't watched them in a while. Those tapes will be something to show my children. Those tapes will always be a treasure of mine. Those tapes show thousands of people being murdered. Those tapes show September 11 -- The day that shook America. About ten to fifteen minutes later, the loudspeaker came on again. ?The Twin Towers are no longer standing.? There were minds, including mine, thinking, ?Could we possibly be next?? Later that day I went home early because of the attacks. When we were home, my mom was glued to the TV. I just sat there still in shock mode. All I wandered that day was one- could this happen again? And the second thing I thought about was- who would have a sick enough mind to do such a thing? And I think that people all over the country asked that question. Since this tragedy has occurred, I defiantly think that America has changed since 9/11! I think this because some people say, ?history repeats itself?. And by saying this, I think that they scare others. Also some people (I have noticed) are more careful about what they do. For example, if you look around at festivals or some kind of party, people are somewhat more respectful to others than they used to be. But, on the other hand, some people think that it is just time to move on and forget about the past. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was sleeping when my mom woke me up and told me something terrible had happened to our country. The world trade center in New York had been attacked by terrorists. Even though I was only nine when the world trade centers were attacked, I felt like I understood just how bad it really was. The time it actually happened it was about 4 in the morning at my house. My mom told me I needed to come upstairs and watch the TV, becaue almost all the channels had news coverage showing video footage or plains flying into the twin towers and then the towers finally crumbling and falling to the ground. Even though it was about six in the morning, I was still really worried about what had happaned. The 11th was a school day, so despite all my protests I did have to attend that day. I'll never forget that day either. When I got to school (I was in 4th grade) my teacher was crying when she asked us all if we knew what had happened that morning. She then kind of discribed it to us and asked if we had any questions. The whole class was silent. I kind of only paid half attention to my teacher the rest of the day because I was lost thought. I thought about all the people that worked in those two buildings. I thought about my uncle Cliff that owned a Deli right across the street from tower one. I think I was in shock. This shock would later turn to feelings of being scared, and further on down the road I felt rage against the stupid jerks that had killed thousands of innocent Americans. Today I think my feelings are a mixture of hate for the terrorists, and sorrow for the people that lost loved ones. I'm also very happy to tell you that my uncle Cliff is still alive today. He was becoming frustrated because he could not reach his office's web site. (I was not working online.) The only message was that the site was down. At approximately 10:00 am our time (1:00pm in the east), we turned on the television. For the first instant, we thought we were tuned in to a movie or a movie advertisement. Then the horror struck. I love New York city! It is my true soul home & to me the heart of my country. I immediately focused on my friends in the city and friends in the Washington DC area. Then on the larger horror. We sat for several hours transfixed and in tears. We then gathered in downtown Portland for a vigil with others. Tell us your story: I woke up to my favortite disc jockey on the Kiis FM radio station speaking with a serious and sad tone of voice, instead of his usuall funny, and uplifting laughter. In my ten years of listening to this man I had never heard anything but an energetic happy man. I was scared. I jumped out of bed and went to the living room to turn on the t.v. I was horrified. In shock. The day outside was the most beautiful September day, but most people were in their homes glewed to the t.v or listening to the radio while on the road. I drove around looking for a store that sold American flags, but I went to a few before I could find one. I found the small flags with wooden sticks at a grocery store. I bought two, one for my car and the other for my house. Everything was so surreal, sadness overwhelmed me and tears were puouring down my face. Never had I felt such impotence and genuine pain for thousands of people unknown to me. My heart ached, and still does for all the inocent lives lost. A couple of days later when I walked outside my building our American flag was being displayed by all the apartments around. It was beautiful. I was filled with pride, hope and love. This day shook America, but didn't break it's spirit. We all united to get through this, and we all did it with genuine love,and love seeks to protect and aid; it is unselfish, and it moves us in miraculos ways. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My sister turned on the radio around 900a and heard a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. As she told me she walked over and turned on the TV and we watched in horror it was on fire and the second plane came in and hit the other tower. Unable to believe what we were seeing we were stunned. The rest of the day we were glued to the TV. The sad part is that it was my youngest daugter's 28th birthday. We had planned to all go out to dinner to celebrate her birthday but instead everyone came to my sister's house. Our families and one of our brothers and his family gathered in the living room joining hands making a circle. We went around the circle and everyone said a prayer even the youngest who was 7. Those prayers were so touching and especially the children as they prayed for the people in New York and Washington and our country. The birthday was celebrated by a family together in prayer and love. The next night we went to Houston's First Baptist Church for a citywide prayer service that brought all faiths and nationalities together. On Friday of the same week we stopped at 700p at a restaurant and were led in a prayer by the owner. Candles were lit and red, white, and blue ribbons were handed out to wear. The following week my husband and I traveled to Washington, D.C. and went up on a hill that overlooks the Pentagon where a makeshift memorial had been set up. There were bears, candles, flowers, photos, letters, and memorial services programs for some of the victims. There was even a baby stroller tied to a tree. The huge black hole was gaping open in the Pentagon but the beautiful colors of "Old Glory" gave hope and pride. As we traveled from Houston and back we participated many times in efforts of support for the victims of the terrorist attacks on our country. We signed two huge posters at the Natural Bridge in Virginia that were being taken to New York and Washington sponsored by a local radio station. Then in York, PA we hought water and other items at Walmart to be taken by huge trucks from Walmart to New York that very day. We bought homemade baked goods from firemen outside Lancaster, PA and donated money at several restaurants along our route to go to the families of the victims. Seeing the flags on cars, businesses, homes, farms, and churches gave us such a feeling of solidarity all across our country. We stand together and have a wonderful nation that we are not about to give up. Prayers are still being said for the families of those we lost on 9-11-2001 and their loved ones will not be forgotten.
