All of a sudden I heard this very loud crash. I thought that it was a car accident. But somebody told me to look up and thats when I saw the first building up in smoke. I just stood there in shock as the building continued to burn. Then a few moments later, I was still looking up when the second plane hit the other building. Thats when all the cell phones went out and i became disconnected from talking to my grandmother. I started when the second building collapsed because all the smoke and debris filled the streets of downtown manhattan. Oh my gosh!? I ran into the loft watched the planes crash into the buildings on T.V.. My heart was beating so fast I was in shock along time I didn?t know what to do. I can?t imagine people walking into work all happy and the next thing you know people?s lives were gone the second the planes crashed. My mom told me that the planes had a lot of people in it and it was hijacked by Alqaeda to crash the planes into the World Trade Centers. She also told me that the American Government thought that Osama Bin Laden was behind all of this. I feel for all the people who were involved in September 11th, 2001. It was so sad that those people?s families are crushed because of what happened on September 11, 2001. Some people survived the crashes and some people didn?t. It was all over the news for weeks people were so shocked. There was nothing else on except for info on the terrorist attacks. The attacks is the reason there is a war going on against the United States and the Terrorism right now. It is very scary especially if you family member is a soldier. Since I work in one of the tallest buildings in Columbus that is also connected to government buildings, my company announced that we could leave at about 11:00. All the government workers were dismissed earlier and I remember how quiet downtown was as I walked out of the building. The main downtown street "High Street" was closed to all traffic and I was unaware of this until I walked out of my building.I'm a bus rider and I couldn't catch my bus home at my normal stop since High Street was closed. Policemen were standing along High Street and they were antsy with hands on their guns. This made everyone afraid to ask what was happening with the buses. So I just walked. I had to walk over a mile to a bus stop on the outer edge of downtown to catch my bus. I waited almost two hours. People waiting for the bus decided to walk tremendous distances just to get home to their loved ones. The bus finally came and it was packed. I sat next to a lady who was hysterical and talking to herself incoherently. As soon as another seat became available, I moved. People chatted on the bus. I went into the Energy wear store to open up. A customer came into the store and we were talking, I asked her was it snowing outside she said no "why" We both looked out the window and we saw dust,papers and folders falling out of the sky. A announcement came across the loud speakers that a plane had just hit one of the towers and if we had anybody that we knew who worked there to check and see if they were alright. I have a aunt who worked for Morgan& stanley so I was worried about her, as I was leaving out of the store the building started to shake and thats when the second plane had hit. We were told to stay in and not to leave but I ran out anyway. There were hundreds of people running down wall st I tried to avoid getting knocked down so I ran back into the building. There were people from everywhere running into the building,as the tower fell the windows were covered with a grey smoke at this time I thought that I was going to dye so I called home and told my family that I loved them and I told My husband to make sure he took good care of my 1 year old son.There were people who worked in the trade center who came to my job wet,crying,no shoes on,and just confused. I just want to say that that was the worst day of my life not knowing if your going to see tomorrow,but so many people did not make it home to there family.I thank God everyday for saving my life and all those who made it out of the building. I was 1,000 miles away from the horrors of that day, sitting in my 7th grade Computer Technology class, listening to what had happened a few short hours before. As I was told I stared in shock at the blank screen in front of me, listening to the kids around me go "Woah", and "Oh, my God." When I got home I watched the T.V. for three hours, and couldn't believe that it had actually happened. I couldn't believe that so many lives were torn apart because of that day. My sister called me from Brodheadsville, PA. and told me that a plane hit the Twin Towers. I put the news on. We assumed it was a horrible accident. While watching the fire, we saw the second plane come in and thought we were watching an instant replay, until the reporters started screaming. At that point we realized our country was under attack. I immediately hung up and tried to reach my husband who is a Police Officer with the Bridge and Tunnel Authority, and is assigned to the Triboro Bridge. It took hours for us to reach each other. When my husband did get home, he told me that they saw the Towers go down from the Triboro Bridge. I asked, if it was like a movie, unreal, and he said "no, it was worse, beacause it was". My husband knew some of the officers who were lost. It was very scary. My little boy saw my crying al the time. We did not go out for days. Four weeks earlier, I had left my job of 10 years in Midtown Manhattan, and was very grateful not to have been there. It's was 11:22 a.m. when I heard these words, my boyfriend had just woken up and came downstairs. I looked down and noticed I was holding a full teaspoon of sugar in one hand and a now ice cold cup of coffee in the other. I had been standing there like that, preparing my first cup of coffe for the day. I had turned on the T.V.and I heard newscasters and then the screen came into focus,a plane turning straight into the World Trade Tower (the 2nd tower). My boyfriend kept asking me "Whats wrong"? Then he must have started to realize what was being said on the T.V. we stared in pure disbelief.I don't remember what my boyfriend did the rest of the day or when he left me alone in the kitchen or if he did. Tell us your story: I was sitting at my desk typing in the regular daily invoices for our Accounting Department when my two co-workers ran behind me shouting, "The WTC had been hit!" I turned up the radio on my desk and the local morning show confirmed the first plane crashing into the WTC. I headed for the conference room at my place of work and everyone was there watching the big screen TV as the second plane hit. Through that whole time, I kept telling myself, "Wake up! Wake up! It's only a dream!" or "This is a movie! Leave the theater!" How much I wished that I could have done either one of those things to make this horrible day leave my memory forever. While watching everything unfold in New York and Washington DC, we received news that one of our co workers' family members was working at the Pentagon and they had no way to find out if they were alive. Sadly, we found out a several days later that they had died as soon as the plane hit the building. After watching the towers collaspe, I ran from the conference room and I called my mother in Indiana. I told her that I loved her and my father very much and if I could, I would leave right now to be with them. I cried along with my mother during our conversation not knowing what would happen next and if I would ever see them again. After seeing all that happened during the morning of September 11, I knew that I would have to do something that would be a benefit to the families and victims. Since I couldn't go to New York to help, I decided that I could do something locally. I went to the American Red Cross and donated blood and then donated a blanket and water to a local trucking firm that was going to deliver goods to the people in New York. This gave me a sense of accomplishment that I knew would someone a world of good in a time of tragedy. Tell us your story: The radio station I listen to in the morning usually tells jokes and so the first mention of the airplane in the Tower went unheeded. When it was repeated, I turned on the television, awaking my husband who said, "Terrorists". I could not fathom it until the second plane hit. I felt so very sorry for those unfortunate victims and their family but when the building(s) collapsed, it was unbelievable. I did not know what was going on so I followed her into the room to watch the terror of the falling towers. The second plane had just hit the second tower. I could not believe this. My first thought was that this was an accident. That stupid pilot was unqualified. Then the buildings began to fall and I realized. How in the hell could there be two unqualified pilots hitting both towers. I was afraid at this point. No one went to work. Los Angeles was in a state of confusion and disbelief. I could did not feel the reality of 9/11. Not even when buildings began to crumble. Time passed, and reality struck, hard. I began to cry thinking of the horror those innocent people must have felt. I felt helpless and unsafe. Seeing real people full of life jumping out the windows in desperation to save themselves from the flames was horrifying. My sister called me and we watched the tragedy together. Her brother-in-law was missing. He worked in the Pentagon. My friend, Mike called me. He was frantic he said that his parents were on a train from Philadelphia to Washington and in the middle of nowhere they had to get off of the train and seek refuge with absolute strangers. Luckily, my sister's brother-in-law was across the street as the plane hit the Pentagon and Mike's family was taken in by a nice couple in a Maryland. I cried and cried for days. Hoping and praying that no one that I knew was hurt or dead. I called everyone I knew and told them I loved them. I told them that I hoped everyone that they knew is safe. 9/11/01. That was the day I learned not to take life for granted and have no fear. Ever. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was at work at the East Tennessee Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, Tennessee when I heard the news about the World Trade Center. At first a parent of one of our children told us that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. At that time, I realized this was some very bad news, but it wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized just how bad it was. As I watched the television coverage of this in the lobby, I was angry, saddened, frightened, and felt very helpless. I felt sympathy for the families of the people in the World Trade Center, but I couldn't imagine how those people felt. I tried to imagine what it was like to be in the World Trade Center or one of the airplanes, but I couldn't even begin to know what those people must have felt. I am very proud of the terrific Country in which I live, and support my Country all the way. United we stand! Talk radio helps me wake up, especially when it is shock-jock Howard Stern. I listened to a frantic caller tell Howard that he was in Manhattan and the entire downtown area was on fire. At first this piece of information didn't register as consequential. People who call the Howard Stern show are normally not "right in the head." But he kept up his frenetic pace, sounding much more grave than a typical caller. Howard's response was equally grave and serious. It finally came to me that this was no joke, something was truly wrong. Now fully awake I rushed out of bed to the television. The Twin Towers were on fire. Disbelief. Every channel had coverage. Newscasters reported that airplanes flew smack into the New York skyscrapers, clearly on purpose. Fear. Images of the Pentagon, not 10 miles from my house, came on the screen. It too was on fire. Panic. The Twin Towers collapsed, one after the other, clouds of dust blanketing the skyline. Horror. It became increasingly clear: America was under attack. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was my freshmen year in High School. School had just started so I was figuring out how to adjust to the place. I was walking into my 2nd period Social Studies class like it was just a regular day. Everyone was sitting in class feeling the same way I was. The bell rang and the teacher wasn't there. About five minutes later, our teacher came into class and told us that a plane hit the World Trade Center. None of us have ever experienced a tragedy like this before. All of us being 14 and 15 year old kids weren't exactly sure how to deal with this. A lot of people cried. A lot of people were very somber. I myself had no idea what to think. I was glued to either the TV or the radio all day. Then came the crash into the Pentagon. Then came the crash that could have killed many people at our capital, but was foiled thanks to the brave souls aboard United Flight 93. Five years later and I find myself still feeling like it all happened yesterday. 9/11 not only changed us as induviduals, but as a nation. I will always remember, and I hope you will too. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My 1 year old daughter and I were getting ready to go on a play date when my husband called from BWI. He asked me if we had seen the news, a plane had flown into one of the world trade towers. He told me he missed his early AM flight and was waiting for the next one. He was watching TV in the airport, and while we were talking he said, "my god, another plane just hit the other tower!" We were talking about how it couldn't be an accident if it happened twice. It was so frightening. My husband missed his flight because he forgot his wallet. If he wasn't so absentminded (bless his heart) he would have been in the air when all this started, and likely had to land somewhere and been stranded when they stopped all air flight. As it was, he drove home and was able to be with us during this awful time. My daughter and I decided to go ahead to our playdate. We had no way to call my friend at that point to tell her we wouldn't come. We were meeting at Longwood Gardens, a beautiful public gardens near our home. I figured might as well be in a place I love with friends than home alone. So we went. I used to work there, so I knew the security guards. As we walked our babies around the gardens, we got updates, heard about the PA flight and the Pentagon. It was horrifying, but I was glad I was not alone. We had friends who had clients who lost staff in the events in NY. We knew people who lived in Manhattan. The events on 9-11 danced around us. Lucky for us, we weren't touched directly. My friends and I were on our way to psychology when we saw crowds of people standing around the trucks that work around our school. People were talking about the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. My friends and I did not know what was going on until we were in psychology. Our professor told us that there were terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. One girl ran out of the lecture hall crying, and then class was cancelled. We walked to the Johnson Center and saw crowds of people watching TV in the lounge. Many people were crying, and almost everyone was trying to call someone on their cell phones. I started to get scared, and couldn't believe what I was hearing. I decided to skip my math class and go home. On my way home, I listened to the radio, and heard all the news about the collapse of the World Trade Centers, and the fire burning in the Pentagon. My cell phone was not working, so I had no comfort to speak of on the long drive home. A drive that was supposed to be 25 mns ended up lasting 2 hours because of traffic, and many police cars. I finally got through to my mom, who was hysterical and wanted me to come home as soon as possible. Then one of my friends called me to tell me that our math professor was still holding class. This did not seem very important at the time because of the crisis that had just happened. At home, I watched the news all day, waiting to see what else had happened. I felt scared for my safety as well as the safety of my friends and family. I called some of my friends to see if they were okay. That night was a restless night for me. I was afraid for all my friends in the armed forces and began to worry. The aftermath of the attacks was horrible, and I felt hopeless. I went to give blood and donated some food to the people who volunteered in trying to clear up the debris at the Pentagon. Even now, sometimes the event that happened only 6 months ago seems surreal. However, I know that this is an event that will stay imprinted in everyones mind. I just hope that the pain will fade as time goes on, but I know that it will never be forgotten. I hadn't talked to him in awhile so it was a nice surprise to get his call. I remembered asking "what's going on?" And he replied "Just watching the craziness unfold here...turn on your tv." I did, and then I hung up the phone. I didn't say goodbye or anything, I guess I was shocked at what I was seeing. A few years back, I was flying into Newark, NJ after a trip to London, and the plane flew over the towers on our approach. They were beautiful. But until I turned on the news that morning, I never thought of all the people that worked in them. I had been there, I had been over them. They were crumbling before my eyes. A few days later, I was at the neighborhood market and ran into a lady I had worked with at St.Joe's hospital a few years back. She asked me if "I had heard about Dr. Betru." Turns out a doctor I had known in the ER, Yeneneh Betru, was on the plane that struck the Pentagon. I didn't even finish grocery shopping. Hope, fear, sorrow,and still in complete awe! How could a nation so strong, so powerful fall so quickly in one day? On 9/11/01...I had been on summer vacation from college so I decided it was a day to sleep in, no work, no nothing for the whole day. Only my plans had been changed for me. Laying in bed dreaming away my phone rang, it was odd that someone who knew I was on break would call me at 9am.. (thats early for me). I picked up the phone and my friend Russ from Pennsylvania was on the other line. "are you watching tv" he said , I responded "no i'm sleeping is this something important or can i go back to bed?" "turn on the tv" he said.."what channel?" "IT DOESN MATTER TURN IT ON" so i casually turned on the tv...just in time to see the second plane crash into the WTC. I was scared and immediately burst into tears. Wondering how something like this could happen. My friend was interning for Congress..I didnt know where he was..could he have been in the pentagon? The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was only 3 miles from where Russ lived..is he ok? So many thoughts so many prayers! The rest of that day and for days to come I laid in bed, mourned for those who lost their lives and prayed for EVERYONE in the country. I had so many unanswered questions running through my head. And its funny, I remember that day like it was yesterday. Those planes so vivid in my mind, watching those towers seemingly so indestructable crash down into the ground. There are so many days since then that I still have to take a few moments and cry. It hurts me to think of all those families who were hurt that day, of how vulnerable our country was that day. I was lucky, I no one I knew was directly related to 9/11, yet so many other families had been shattered that day. I picked my brother up from school and the authorities there told me since I wasn't his mother I could not legally take him out. I was so frustrated I snapped and told her to call the police! I wanted my whole family together that day, I didnt want to lose sight of a single one of my brothers and sisters afraid of what could happen. At each passing day since then I still pray for those families, and I will NEVER forget that day. Being 22, this is the first major tragedy that I can remember happening, and it will remain with me forever. With all the political battles goin on, I try not to lose sight of the cause of this war, our troops over there defending our right to freedom and democracy. I only wish that those troops come back safe and truely know that America is grateful for their service...without them where would we be? So I tell everyone remember those who have fallen, their families, the courage all those people had, and thank God that every day we can still wake up and carry out our days. I pray that my nieces and nephews and other young children do not have to live in fear, wondering if another attack will take place.
