This was the only thought on my mind as I wake up on yet another boring Tuesday. As usual, I reluctantly got out of bed at around 7:50, did my morning routine of getting dressed and grabbing some cereal, and I was on the bus by 8:10. How was I to know that at the moment, thousands of Americans were about to lose their lives, while the lives of everyone else in the nation was about to be changed forever? Everything was average. From 9:15, I spent a 90 minutes in my first period gym class, doing routine warm-ups and exercising as usual. Then class change bell would ring later on, which in my case signaled my shift to my World History II class, where I would spend 30 minutes in class before we would break for a half- hour lunch, before finishing World History over another hour. As I always did after the intial 30 minutes of my class, I remember sitting down with my lunch buddy Alex, and I tried to carry over a conversation we had from the last time we talked. However, he seemed too excited about something to talk about the usual subjects of videogames and anime. Instead, he started asking me question that I thought to be quite unusual. Later it seems, he questions turned out to be unusual do to the fact that they truly were one of kind. "Hey did you hear?' "Hear about what?" "About the twin towers?" "Huh?' "They got the twin towers. People are dying." "???...Bastards." I had no idea what were these towers Alex was talking about, or who this "they" he was referring to. I assumed that he must have been referring to some sort of fiction or making some sort of joke that I didn't understand, and in turn, responded sarcastically as such. But then Alex started to talk as if some sort-of a plane accident on the news was related to kids being pulled early out of school by parents, and I can remember how clueless I felt a as I left lunch to return to class. Looking around during the six minutes I had to return to class, I still remember that feeling of being the only one around who was missing something important. That is, until returning to my World History class, where the teacher decided to spend the rest of our hour by simply having us watch the news. What I saw on the screen I could only describe as surreal. For me, it was difficult to comprehend what I was seeing. This is not a recording, but an event that is actually happening right now? I could see my anxious fellow classmates were looking around, some as lost for words as I was, other were asking questions, while still others cried at the scene. But just what was I supposed to feel watching this tragedy unfold I wondered? All I could remember was even more confusion as I gazed at the smoke coming from the WTC. However, I finally found a answer to my stunned feelings, as they were to be soon replaced by unsettling disturbance, once I had learned that the Pentagon too had been hit. The Pentagon, I thought, the very same Pentagon only 30 minutes away from my home, had come under attack. Of all the cities in this country, an attack had to come to the city nearest me. Unlike New York , I realized, Washington D.C. was a place I had actually been to, and one of its great landmark buildings, a building I had actually seen, was on fire, and there was no telling what further damage was to come to the capitol. What was happening on a global scale, was hitting me on the local level, and I found that revelation most unnerving. But at least I could begin to understand one thing knowing how local this event was. An understanding, of just how significant this day would become, being the first time since 1812 that Washington was hit by a foreign power. As I realized that today was to be a very special Tuesday, there was only one appropriated action to take as I watched with my class the infamous event unfold. I was in my junior year gym class first period.I remember feeling like things just weren't right. Shortly after the start of my second period spanish class there was noise in the hall and a teacher interupted our class insisting that we turn on the tv because there had been an accident and the world trade towers had been struck by a plain. At first i didn't think that it would be a terrorist attack.I thought maybe there was a malfunction with the plains engine. I didn't think anyone could be capable of premeditating something so aweful. The class didn't seem to take it seriouisly at first people were telling jokes and laughing and I guess it just haden't hit them yet how real the situation was. When we watched in horror as the second plain hit the second tower the class was quiet and one of the guys in our class started to cry because his sister was in college in New York City. To see one of my male piers break down and cry was when i realized how real this really was. I kept thinking we were in a war movie and that all of this couldn't be true. Then came the news of the pentagon. It was unending. The rest of our classes when on as scheduled and teachers handled the events in their own way many had open discussion others chose to go on with normal classes. I just remember wanting to be there New York is only two hours away from where I live and i just felt like i needed to go and be there that maybe i could find someone in the rubble. When i came home after school was the first time i heard about the plain that crashed in Pennsylvania. I was so close to everything but still so helpless. Our tv at home was turned on all day for the following weeks watching the news. I didn't understand when I found out that they were stopping search for life and only cleaning up. How could there be no life left. Looking back on the events of that day, how people reacted, and the patriotism everyone showed for our country i believe that the terrorists only made us stronger. I think that they opened our eyes to how great America is and how blessed we really are. Everyone was in panic and no one knew what to do. People were getting worry about family that was downtown or family that lived in those areas. If someone at that time were to be visiting and then they were in it, it would crush everyone to hear about it. The principal said that we couldnt watch the t.v. to see what was going on, even though we are old enough to take responsibility for our actions. Everyone had different assumtions about what had happened. THen finally the next plane had hit and we reaized it wasn's an accident. When I got home my mother was sitting in the front room waiting for me. She told me that they had to evacuate the building that my mother works at because it was across the street from the Sears Tower. The paranoia everyone felt finally led out of control and no one felt safe anymore. The panic spread around the United States. Everyone wanted to get revenge on the evil behind the plane crashes, Osama bin Laden. Even though there was already evil in the world, this put America over the top. As we were watching we heard that the plane hit the pentagon. One of my friends was worried because her dad worked at the Pentagon. But when I saw how the Towers were burning I lnew that it was going to come down it was just a matter of time. At the end of 2nd Period I heard over a radio that both buildings had collapsed. then during third period the whole school had a moment of silence for what happened. Running late, as usual, I ran out the door as quickly as possible, no time to check the weather channel (leaving myself still oblivious to the events). I caught the last bus. I arrived just as class was about to start. 9:35. This class often had movie clips and other presentations, so, as I walked in, I didn?t think anything of the movie-like appearance of the classroom. I struggled up the stairs of the lecture hall and found a seat. After a few seconds of looking at the screen, I turned to my neighbor and poked him. I said, ?Hey, what movie is this from?? He turned to me, shocked and silent. After a moment he said that a plane had just flew into the World Trade Center. The World Trade Center? Before that unforgettable day, the only memory I had of it was the hour-long bus tour of NYC I took on a choir trip I took in high school. I remember passing it and seeing all the flags. Now it?s gone. We watched the TV the entire class period. 10:45. I caught the next bus home. As I was going home, the bus driver had the radio on. I heard from the radio that another plane had crashed. I thought, oh-no, hadn?t we had enough for one day. The fourth plane had crashed outside Pittsburg. My heart stopped. My roommate?s family was from there. First thing that I did, when I got home, was try to call my friend that goes to school in New York. I couldn?t get through, the telephone lines were jammed. Thankfully, I found that she had left an away message to tell everyone to turn on their TVs so I knew she was ok. Seeing the images on the TV, I was deeply saddened. It was hard, at first to realize, as I watched the tours collapse, that thousands of lives were being lost. A person is dwarfed in comparison to the giant presence of those buildings. The images were so much like the movies I had seen. A mixture of panic and curiosity filled the faces of the people as they fled the dust and debris. As I watched the TV, I found my self talking to them, telling them to run, just like you do for the movie characters. Such a strange sight it was to see the masses fleeing New York by foot. There were business people walking along side a group of elementary school students. The teachers like mother ducks. You could see them as they were trying to be brave for their students. Hiding the horror and fear that you knew everyone was feeling. My roommate walked into the apartment. She is panic-stricken. She tried for hours to get though to her family at home. I feel helpless trying to comfort her. Later that night we find out that her family is safe, and her cousin, who is on a lay-over in NYC from his job as a flight attendant at United, had decided to sleep-in instead of visiting the sky deck of the WTC that morning. We all breathe a deep sigh of relief. I found myself mysteriously hooked to the TV for the rest of the night. I needed to know what was going on, any new information. It was like an addiction. I watched as they replayed the images over and over again. I think I was numb. I didn?t cry that day. It took a few days for it to sink in. Now every time I see those images. I break down. The next morning I awoke to the realization that I had to fly home that Friday. I feel that the president?s words were very important. He said that we need to get back to ?business as usual? as quickly as possible, because if we live our lives in fear then the terrorists have won. That gave me bravery and internal strength. I can?t let them win. I was on the first plane out of Indianapolis after the ban on flights was lifted. What was normally a pretty full flight was now mostly empty. It was then that I started to realize that the repercussions of the sorrow-full day would go far beyond the grief and destruction at ground-zero. Tell us your story: I guess not a lot unlike other people that day I was at work, when I heard the news I was in total shock.but the events of the day had a a deeper meaning to me that I would not realize until almost two weeks after the fact. I am living in Central Texas with my husband and three children. My family are spread out, My Oldest brotehr is in Fla, and my other brother and sister are in Upstate NY, not far from the site of the fourth plane's crach. I called my mom early in the day, not long after I first heard of the buiilding being hit, since i grew up in upstate ny it was a little close to home for me and imy family back home. after hearing of the wreck in Penn. I called my mom again to be sure she was ok, my mom was living in a nursing home in Newfield ,NY after surviving numerous surgery which left her as a double amputee and permanatly in a wheelchair. the site in Penn. is not too far from her home, and though i knew she was not at all hurt by the accident, i needed to hear her voice to know in my heart she was all right. over the next two weeks we were very busy making flags at the sign shop i work at so i had very little time to do much of anything. but on the evening of September 23, i recieved a phone call telling me my mom was gone, she had died in her sleep. on the drive back to New York for the service my children and i heard a song on the radio that made us all cry and made us realize the fact. The song was "Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning" by Alan Jackson, there is a line in the song that really hit home for me personally. the line was "did you call up your mother and tell her you love her." well that is in fact what i did on september 11, but i wish now that I had said more, you see the evening of september 11 was the last time that i ever spoke to my mother. if i had only know that at the time there is so much more i would have told her. for all of those who lost a loved one in the tragedy may god bless you and for all of those who are gone, god has already blessed you. I was instant messaging my neighbor Lisa. We were chatting and she wrote..."Are you watching the Trade Center?" The first thing I thought was...in my mind...the stock exchanges. I was thinking what world country are we NOT trading with now? Immediately the telephone rang.... it was my son Jason, the one who is in the military. He said to me in such a nervous voice, "MOM...MOM! Are you watching the TV; can you see any smoke?" I was so shocked and confused by what he was saying to me, in that tone of voice. I typed a few words to Lisa to say goodbye and ran to the living room. I saw it!!! I saw the building burning. I immediately thought of my boss Beryl, and my other boss Sharon who I worked for in Princeton. Both worked in New York. They worked in Manhattan. I wasn't sure what was happening there? I started to cry. I stepped outside to see planes and helicopters flying overhead. I thought...Why God...why now.... why this? But I knew in my heart God makes no mistakes. It was his will for this to happen. The last time I felt this horror and fear is when my son called me to tell me he was shipping out to Saudi Arabia to try and quell Saddam. I couldn't understand why to take these lives in New York in this building. Not knowing all the details, I thought it was a plane crash, that the pilot had a heart attack or something went wrong with the plane. I was not prepared to understand this was a proposed act to crash this plane into one of our buildings in New York. I remember seeing and hearing the sirens, whistles, car alarms going off in the distance as I watched all this unfolding in front of me on my TV. I was so concerned for Beryl and Sharon who were there...in Manhattan! The tears flowed again as my neighbors and I chatted on the phone about what was happening. Then it happened again and my heart sank. This was NO accident. That plane was purposely aimed for the second tower. My God...these were The World Trade Centers.... the beautiful buildings we would see in the distance here from New Jersey. When it was a clear day they would sparkle in the sunshine. Then the buildings fell within minutes of each other with mysterious gray clouds of smoke and debris covering over anyone or anything in its path. I never knew how to really react to all that was happening. It seems as if the world has stopped. I really thought next we all were going to be the victims of a nuclear bomb. I said some prayers and just thought of how those people...those people in the buildings, could never get out alive. I asked God to give them strength. I thought of the people on the airplane. They were innocently traveling from one destination to another, that's all. I continued to ask why??? After hearing of the Pentagon I shuddered once again. When I found out about Flight 11, Todd Beamer, and the countless others who gave their lives as heroes (that no one can ever follow with such distinction); I was stricken with relentless joy. We were taken down for minutes but our American heroes hung right in there without any reservations or fear from anyone! Now it is one year later and many questions have been answered about many things that terrible day in September. I still think of how those people who were proud to be a part of the World Trade Center in New York, proud to be Americans participating in the growth of our economy. Those who were proud to be fireman, policeman, doctor, nurse and EMT, and just people on the street who were helping each other despite the challenge to their professions and humanity on this dark day. They were proud to be there just to help. They were absolutely powerless to control this burning building, but they put their lives on the line as only these souls can do. These people were just regular every day guys and gals just living, working, saving lives, just for the sake of survival. Then I think of that word "survival." For those who did survive.... it is truly a blessing and it may serve as some direction for them to go on ahead in this life. I hope those who are able to go on can do so with out feeling as if life may deal them these kinds of cards again. I know many tears will flow into the sea of love for those lost on this day. I, for one, will contribute. They will always remain a part of the United States and will be a part of our American history forever. I dropped off my son, went home, turned on the TV and watched the horrific breaking news on television. Next, I called my friend that's originally from NY, to see if she has family or friends that work in the area. She was in her car and hadn't even heard the tragic news. She raced home and started to make phone calls to family. Luckily no one was caught in the disaster. My husband came home early from work and we watched TV all day. I felt so helpless! The music station was interrupted and a newsman stated that a plane had just hit one of the towers. It was believed to have just been a accident until the second plane collided into the second tower. I listened in horror as the spokesman told what was currently going on. A short time later he stated that one of the towers collapsed and soon later the second tower collapsed as well. I'll never in my life forget the fear that went through me when a friend called and asked if I was watching the news. I was sitting at home with, at the time, my one year old. The first plane had already hit and I was just trying to make out what was going on. Then it seemed every time I blinked my eyes another plane was crashing. I started thinking how we had just put my mother on a plane a day before. As horrible as it was to watch, I felt as though I was glued to the television. Minutes earler I was watching Rugrats with my son and now thinking "what next?". I'm not sure anyone could've been prepared for what was to come. I was by myself, my students had not yet come to class. I sat there in awe, like I was watching a movie, could this really be happening? The bell rang and in came my second period world history class. Most knew nothing of the attacks, yet. They walked in noisely as most nineth graders do, oblivious to anything but there own world. I explained what was going on and then turned on the news in my classroom. It did not seem they knew how to react. We watched as the buildings collapsed, my reaction was much more severe than theirs. Some even laughed when they saw the building collapse, not out of disrespect, but of seeing something that awesome on TV. I told the students that they probably just witnessed the death of 1,000 people. The room grew somber, then we heard news of another plane ramming into the pentagon, and yet another still missing finally coming down in Pennsylvania. I looked at my students and started to realize something. Kids by the time they are 18 have witnessed thousands of murders, sex is for anybody at any age, with anyone. As a society, God is being taken out of everything, thus taken everything that is moral, decent, kind, good, and what we think "humane" out of our kids. These students had seen so many catastrophes this one did not seem much different at first. However the reality of the situation finally had gripped these ninth graders, real people had died and they had seen it. Students hear about wars and terror all the time in class, but today 9-11 it finally hit home!!! As I watched those kids leave my class I realized they were notthe same as they were before they went in, and neither was I. Tell us your story: I was in Kilwinning in Scotland, I lived in a residential unit for learning disabled adults in Stevenston, also in Scotland.I had to go out to get a birthday present for my ex-choir-mistress, the Unit Manager supported me to go. We heard about the attacks while in the cash and carry in Kilwinning but I just kind of laughed them off thinking someone was playing a sick joke. When We got home, it was an entirely different story. All the staff except for one were sitting in Lounge 1 with their eyes glued to the television. I sat and watched too, I wasn't the only service user to watch, there were three others. I still didn't believe what was happening until I went to my bedroom and put the radio on, my usual radio Station was doing quarter of an hour apart news broadcasts, that was when I realised it was all happening, the pictures on television were too surreal to believe... ABC went directly to pictures of the twin towers in NY. One of the towers was already hit. The reporter wondered if it was an accident or terrisom. The second plane appeared & hit the second tower. My gut knew that was an act of terrisom. Terrisom normally happens that time of hour. I had to go on to work. When I saw friends along the way, they told me about the crumbling of the towers. Everyone was scared. Everyone wondered what would be hit next. Little latter, the Pentigon News was heard. That is when I felt America was under attack. I felt a deep sorrow for all the people in the desister. The inosent people on the planes having their lives taken away like that. It was hard to continue working for the grief I personally felt. Then, I heard the news of the Penn. plane going down & I felt relief that more lives weren't hit by a target. God watches over us & I prayed for the many & their families. When I got home I watched the news on ABC the rest of the evening. They had reporters at the hospitals waiting to help the ones who survived. People donated alot of blood & not very many showed up. That's when I was scared they died. The following day I felt no one knows when their last day is. So, I donated money to the Red Cross to use as they see fit. They were there on other desisters & I knew they would be there for this one. We have morned for a year over this tragic loss. We have learned we are not as protected as we once thought. I have to admire Pre. Bush for his fight of the unknown terrorist because I realize, he is here, from our country to do the distruction. I've also learned to be a kinder person to others from foreign lands. This is not their fault. I hope one day we can have Peace again, but, I'll always remember this day of September. I was at school during that time then our teachers told us "Please Turn on your television the minute you get home" and we were like "What!", What channel this or that? So it was a bit chaos for a while. When school ended for the day, I came out of the building and went home with my friend. Finally I got home and turned on the television, I was horrified what I've seen and my eyes just was full of tears! I was just in awe the whole day and terrified! My roomate woke me up saying that a plane hit the towers...I thaough a small plane and a drunken somebody and maybe a few people were hurt. After being glued to the TV for most of the day I went to class...but I ended up at the church at school (huge and beautiful), it was on my way to class and I found myself pulled inside...I mean be real...class? I was just listening to AM radio about war! What the hell was going on?! I walk into the church and two of my friends from the city stagger towards me and one of them fell on me...there are no words for the pain being released by this young woman. I could almost fell it buring me skin. You see the majority of this suburb univeristy near Pilly was from New York and Northern Jersey...I knew too many people that day. The worst part was the distance and availability of roads. I was being ripped apart by frustration and it was all I could do to not drive to NY. What good would it have done? I woulnd;t have gotten anywhere near the city and they were cramped with volunteers 2 hours closer than I was...but still. The next thing I remember was the candles...thousands of candles everywhere. People standing in the front of their respective careers, silent, holding canles that burned for days. I have returned to New York since college. I have been to Ground Zero, I have seen acres of the open grave, and I have stood with the dead that remain there today. I will never leave New York, it IS and ALWAYS will be a shinging testament to the character and unified spirit of New York, and America! On that day we were all New Yorkers! Tell us your story: As we now pass the 5 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the important thing to remember is that the United States of America stands for freedom and bravery, and so as we mourn those murdered by the cowards who are so afraid of freedom, we must turn the deaths into a unifying meaning, remembering the incredible bravery of the firefighters, the police, and the brave passengers of flight 93, who fought the terrorists, and in doing so, gave America its first victory over the terrorists, who were trying to take out the White House. Only through persistent resolve and the country standing united will defeat the terrorists and will freedom continue to ring in the world. For in the end, terrorists can only shake our resolve and unity, if we allow it to. History shows that it is never easy to do the right thing, and not even possible to even know if you are doing the right thing at the time. It is only years after wood that you may know. Tell us your story: The morning was stunningly gorgeous, and we had so much to look forward to--visitors from Europe, a full business schedule, flights to Europe and then Japan for the following week. I work at the New York City Economic Development Corporation--then Mayor Giuliani's official economic arm for the City. At about 8:50 am, our President heard the news of the first attack; when the second attack hit, he came on the loudspeaker and asked everyone to evacuate. We all exited and formed along John Street, with a view of the burning towers. People were running from the WTC, and we could see people jumping out of the towers away from the flames. How horrifying to think of their choice. People kept flocking out of the offices onto the street; everyone was trying to call home from cell phones. Andrews deli was crowded because its pay phones were working. After about 10 minutes, we all decided it was best to go home. For me, that was just a few more blocks away at the South Street Seaport. My co-worker and I could see the towers from my apartment, and as we heard the news on TV, we watched both towers come down. People were rushing on foot across the Brooklyn Bridge. When the towers collapsed, clouds of smoke and dust covered the people and the bridge, and the wind was blowing to the east to envelope them. We didn't know what was in that air--biological poisons maybe? After the collapses, there was dead silence. I went on the roof to try to see what was happening. No one but emergency personnel and a few stragglers were on the streets. At 6, the lights went out and I had to make my way down the dark stairway to my apartment. All I could think of were those people jumping and the people who must have died in the dark stairwells of the Trade Center. I grabbed my dog, a flashlight, a battery-powered radio and a few clothes and made my way out of the empty apartment building to Chinatown. For two weeks, I was out of a home; our office was evacuated for two weeks; and we worked at the Brooklyn Army Terminal setting up a hotline to provide business help. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11. A Day none of us will ever forget. When one thinks of where they were on 9-11. It makes us think of the ones who were lost, and how their days started as "Normal" as ours did. We all got up in the morning, and got ready for school, work, whatever. But for some of us, we never got to complete our day, and for the rest of us, our days will never be the same. Little things in our lives will remind us of that fateful day. Brushing our teeth while listening to the news, or taking the subway commute to work. My Husband, children and I live in a small town in Montana. I am a Navy Veteran and my Husband is a Firefighter and EMT on the local department. On 9-11-01, I was ill with a stomach virus and couldn't attend work. My children and I were still asleep and the phone rang. It was my mother. She knew I was ill, and I wondered why she woould be calling me. When I picked up the receiver of the phone, She frantically told me to turn on the TV. "Mom, not now, I am so sick..." I wailed to her. "TURN ON THE F***ING NEWS!!!" Ok, Ok, I thought. I turned the TV on Headline News (CNN). I saw Tower One of the WTC burning, and almost immediately after I turned the TV on, I saw the second plane hit. Oh My God. Is this real? I kept thinking of the Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" on the radio from back in the day. This was not an accident. Then a clip of the Pentagon came on the TV. It was all such a blur. All kinds of horrifying images from the WTC, Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania field burned their image in my brain. My husband was out fighting a wildfire at the Fridley Fire Complex out here near our town. I worried constantly about him that day. He told me later that evening when he got home that they (the fireman) heard it on the radio and they thought it was an Orson Weles style joke too. Who would be stupid enough to do that to America? The firemen were told by their bosses to pack up and go home. I still think about all that happened on that day, every day. I hug my friends and family a little tighter these days, because you never know when they won't be here to hug back. Even here in the middle of nowhere Montana. My family and I are proud to be Americans, and we will be here to hlp any way we can in the future...Peace.
