She asked us not to tell the students, and since I teach young ones, I didn't. Several, however, could tell that we were upset about something. At lunch, several of us gathered and had prayer. I volunteered to keep the students in my class to watch a movie because I really couldn't handle watching details of it at school--I didn't want to break down in tears in front of the students. When I did finally arrive home after picking up my 5 month old son, I burst into tears and cried off and on all evening while watching news coverage. It was overall one of the hardest days to endure of my life. I wanted to run home and be with my family and never leave the house, as many of us did. We teachers really didn't attempt to teach anything else that day because WE couldn't handle it. It was eerie that day when I got to the school.The classroom TVs were tuned in to the Sacramento news before school,during breaks,lunch and after school. The children were extremely affected by what they had watched that morning on TV before school. We did the flag salute as usual but with more meaning and more expression that day. Questions seemed to fly all day long from the students, Why did they do this? Who did this? Will they come here and do something to us? We all tried to reasure the children but at the same time were asking many of the same questions. I don,t believe I have ever felt so shaken by a national event, except for the assassination of President Kennedy when I was in fourth grade myself. My teacher cried that day. Tell us your story: I will never forget what a beautiful day it was in washington: blue skies, sun shining down, a very comfortable temperature in the low to mid-70s. Afetr the events occurred, and everyone poured into the streets, the scene was like one of those disaster movies from the 1970s -- traffic jammed up, people trying to get out of the downtown area on foor. Rumors were flying everywhere: tehre's a fire burning on the mall, the Pentagon's been hit by a plane. Entire city blocks were roped off, with policemen standing guard. They said there had been bomb threats. It was very strange. By the time I finally got up to DuPont Circle and ducked into a tavern, the TV screens were showing the images of the towers collapsing. I refused to believe it was true. I thought the TV announcers must have gotten it wrong. Tat's when I found out that teh Pentagon had been hit, and that teh plane had circled over downtown Washington before going back to Virginia and turning around to hit the Pentagon. I felt like those of us who work near the White House (about two blocks from my office) may have had our lives saved by the heroism of the passangers on the plane that went down in Pennsylvania. September 11th will be forever with me. I still think about it almost every day. On Tuseday September 11, 2001, I was in 9th grade. I was going to 3rd period, Global Studies. The teacher was Mrs. Capen. She had reddish brown hair, tall, and she didn't wear glasses. When I walked in the classroom the television was on. Mrs. Capen told us to pull up a chair and to listen to what was happening in New York City. So I did, I pulled up a chair and was listening to what was happening on the televison. I saw a horrible sight; there was a building on fire!! The news reporters were saying that some people that were in some relation to Osama bin Lanan had hijacked a plane and had flown it into one of the Twin Towers. Now this was really weird, because just the week bfore this happened we were learning about the Taliban, and Osama bin Ladan and what horrible things they had been doing. At about 9:07am another plane had flown into the other World Trade Building, I thought, "how could people do such a thing to innocent people?" "Do they have any common sense?" At 9:30am another plane had hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C. After this had happened everything was shut down, every airport, borders everything. Why didn't they shut airports down after the first plane went into the one of the Twin Tower? Afterhearing all of this I wanted to do something to help. I am to young to give blood, and I just couldn't grab my bags and go there to help clear the rubble away. I am to young for everything! President Bush came on the news to give a speech on what was happening in the world and what was going to happen. He said that there would be justice, there would be mourning for those who lost someone, and he would get Osama bin Ladan dead or alive. Was there going to be another war? I thought that World War II was the war to end all wars? Mrs. Capen told us that we are witness of a huge tragedy in history. What I saw on the television was unbeliveable. I kept thinking, "did I know anyone that was falling from the burning building?" Or that was trying to rescue all the people trapped in the Towers? When the towers collapsed there was thousands of people killed by those inconsiderate terrorist groups. We didn't do anything to you did we? NO! Just because we have moved on with better technology and life syles doesn't mean you cna come and kill us! What I heard that day from several teachers was that we need revenge, they where quite angry at this whole situation. Many people were affected in our small town because they knew someone in New York City or Washington D.C. My opinion and felings with this whole issue is that it was very stupid in the terrorist's part. It is a free country here, we have so many things that people in other countries don't. They should be a part of this new technology and government. I think it would be a good idea to let the people everywhere try our society for one day just to see if they like it. I bet they would. We have so much to offer them computers, television, microwaves, EDUCATION, medical treatment, and even more technology than they have ever seen! People in my school and people in the small town of Barker take a lot of things for granted. For example school. Kids in my school think that school is stupid, why do they have to be there? Personally I like going to school but a lot of kids in Afganistan aren't allowed to go to school. The pledge is another thing that some kids take for ganted. Some don't even say the pledge! I mean that is something to be proud of. People are in Afganistan RIGHT NOW fighting for FREEDOM for us and the poor people that were terrorizerd, and don't even know what freedom is! I was at work on that morning building an addtion on a house when the owner came out and said in a paniced voice " We're under attack"... I immediatly went in to watch what was happening...the first plane had just hit...I was in total disbelife of what I was seeing ... Then as I was watching...the second plane smashed into the other tower....I got physaclly ill... I had to leave right then and there to go and make a few phone calls to find out if my cousins were okay...they both live in New York... as it turned out...my one cousin Eric happens to be a detective in Long Island and was there before the second plane hit.... THEN I found out that his brother was in the first tower that morning for work... he had a meeting 6 blocks down from the 2 towers... he was in the middle of the meeting when all hell broke loose... had he waited another 20 minutes he would have been in the building when it was hit... I thank god, as does he...the only thing that he lost was his miny van...buried tho with 27 of his co-workers... I still don't understand why this happened ...I don't think any of us will... but I do know this...we can NEVER...NEVER forget ... I remember when I was a kid going up to visit them ...watching the towers rise up from the ground to their finally stage on the sky line...what a sight... now they...and 3,000 of our friends...are gone... leaves a BIG hole in ones life... Tommy was 25 and had lived and worked in Manhattan for the past two years - in his mind there was no greater city in the world! As my husband and I got ready for work that terrible day we had no inkling of the events that would change our lives. We were not overly surprised when the phone rang at 6:45 a.m., since we are recent transplants from the east coast, and friends and relatives often call then because of the time difference. But as I listened to my husband's voice I knew immediately that something was terribly wrong. I ran downstairs and grabbed the phone to talk to my son as my husband rushed to tune in the television. The horror we saw was beyond all comprehension, and the thought that Tommy was actually there threw me into a panic which only a mother can know. Our phone conversation was necessarily brief, and he assured me he was alright and would try to get back in touch a bit later. I fought back the tears and anger and depression (not always successfully) all that day and for all the days and weeks and months that followed. Every maternal instinct I had pushed me to get on a plane and go to New York to hug my son, but of course neither he nor my husband would even allow me to think of it. A year later I thank God every day that Tommy was spared at least physically, but I will never, ever forget. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11th I dropped my children off at their elementray school and stayed for a fund-raising meeting. As I was leaving the school one of the teachers said a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers. I realized my brother had an office in the World Trade Center Marriott Hotel, and three of my cousins worked in the World Trade Center. I spent most of the day feeling useless in Florida calling back and forth to my mother and sisters and sister-in-law. My brother was in the Marriott at the time of the crash. He thought it was a small plane so as Director of Service he was organizing his staff and helping the injured people out of the hotel. He walked one injured woman out to an ambulence when he looked up and saw the gaping hole in the tower. As he was watching he saw the second plane crash into the south tower. He watched in horror as people jumped out of the windows, and ran in terror with the masses of people toward Battery Park as the massive cloud of ashe and debris chased after them. Fortunatly, my brother was pushed onto a Circle Line and eventually made it home to my parents house. One of my cousins did not go into work that day, he was playing a bussiness round of golf. And another one of my cousins planned to go into work late, after taking his pre-schooler to his first day of school. Unfortunatly, my cousin Loretta Vero (a corporate travel consultant) was in her office at American Express on the 94th floor of the North Tower. She was never recovered. The usual theme song was not heard, instead feared driven voices dictated what was on the screen. The class grew silent. Not a word was spoken, only mouth hung open out of dibelief. I remember feeling goosebumps form all over my body. It didn't matter that at that moment, it was thought to be an accident, It was bonechilling and I was scared. The bell rang to signial the move to the next class, yet none of us wanted to leave. As I entered my next class i noticed the T.V. on and change my seat so I could sit closer and listen to everything that was occuring.I learned that the Pentiagon was also hit. The images on the screen were of fire and desperation. Needlesstosay, the second plane hit and we knew it was no longer an acciedent. My theacher was in and out of the class room in an attempt to contact relatives she had in New York over her cell phone. The lines were all occupied and all she recived was a beeping sound on the other end. The principal came over the P.A. and instructed that the class would be extended until he notified other wise. I turned my attention back to the news and learned that there was still a plane unaccounted for. That stired even more fear in me. What if the other plane were on its way here? What about if it struck our Downtown where most of our business are located and the community colledge my boyfreind attends. The images on the screen became all too close. All flights were grounded. After 2 hours in the class i asked the theacher permission to go to the restroom. My highschool is partially open, and on my way to the restroom i had to walk over the roofless balcony that leads to it. The skies were baron of any activity and the streets were quiet. This was awkward because we are so close to the airport that we grew acustomed to the roar of the passing jets. To hear nothing was terrifying. Yet, I recall looking up at the sky in search of any air born object flying over Miami. I was terrified that I would witness the missing plane. The entire day was spent in disbelif in what was occuring in OUR America. As we passed from class to class I took my position closeist to the T.V. During the last class of the day with 30 minutes remaining of school, the principal came on the P.A. and announced that by orders from the School board, theachers were to turn off all t.v.. We all booed, turned off the t.v., and turned on the computer for the latest news. I read out loud to my class what was occuring. I recall trying to hold my tears back, but I don't know if I was Sucessful. I witness many other sheading tears of grief. That was a day that shook the world! My friend came over to me and said that she thought she herd two planes crashed. i dint think much of it. I know planes crash alot. Tell us your story: When I woke up in the morning of September 11th, I had no clue of what was going on so I went on with my daily morning schedule before school started. Then I arrived at school and I reported to my first period class and my teacher was watching the news. At first when I saw the planes hit the building I thought it was a movie because id did not seem real to me. I just could not believe what I was saying. It was just to hard to believe and then I began to cry as I was watching the World Trade Centers get hit. I began to cry constantly as they showed people jumping out of the building. I felt sorry for those who were in the World Trade Centers. Then when they showed the World Trade Centers fall, I began to shake and then I became frozen. I just didn't believe that people would actually do such a thing to hurt innocent people. I saw people running on the streets and people looking for those people who they lost as they ran. This was such a sad thing to me. Then our principle walked in the class and told us to turn off the TV and so we did. After watching that I just could not concentrate on my schoolwork. I was thinking about what was going to happen and if my mom, dad, grandmother, and everyone else in my family were ok. I was thinking about the innocent people who got killed in the World Trade Centers, the public planes, and those who got injured in the Pentagon. Later on in the day I was watching the news and seeing what all happened. I was also watching people in the interviews who witnessed the attack. Then I remember seeing a mom, a brother, a wife, a child, and a father who were looking for their loved one and I began to pray fo them and pray that they found them and I prayed for those who we lost. I remember thinking that we have not lost anyone on this day, we have just gained more angels. I will never, in my life, forget this day. The bad guys thought that they could change our pride and dignity but they didn't, they made us have even more pride and more dignity and they made us even more proud to be Americans'. My son was very sick and I had to take the day off from work, which is very far and few in between. I was watching tv waiting for my son to wake up to give him medicine, while the whole tragedy unfolded right before my eyes. My son woke up crying and I could not move. It took me a good 15 minutes to pull myself together to be able to get my son. Once I got him I did not want to let him go, I feared everything at that point and had a huge cloud of uncertainty and fear hanging over my head. To me it just felt like the end, I could not figure out what it was the end of, but I had a huge feeling of loss and pain deep inside. It was a life changing event for me and I cannot imagine how people who suffered loss as a result of 9/11 go on. To me the entire event is so unimaginable that I still have trouble comprehending just how something like this could happen. My heart does and will forever go out to everyone who lost someone on 9/11. It breaks my heart over and over again to think of the children who will never grow up with their parents as a result of 9/11. Everynight when I hug my son and kiss him goodnight I thank god for those moments and cherish them like no other. I could not imagine it any other way and yet after 9/11 I realize how all that could change in an instant. I never in my life thought there would be a situation where I could not describe it with words strong enought to convey my true feelings. 9/11 was an unthinkably sad say. Tell us your story: Im sitting here staring out my window and thinking of this day 3 years ago.....3 years ago on this date and i can still tell you what i was doing down to the last detail..... It was my Senior year in High School... It started out like any other morning...My mom and sister were sick that day so instead of going to school i stayed home that day to take care of them ( ironicly if i had gone to school i was going to wear and american flag tank top) so when i stayed home i put on my ARMY sweats and turned on tv and was watching Muarry(TV Talk show) When my phone rang it was my Brother in law he was calling to tell me to put it on CNN that a plane hit the World Trade Center not think his joke was funny i yelled and hung up he called back insisting so i changed the channel and was watch just as the 2nd plane hit i hung up not realizing and stared in asonishment at the tv... i was scared for the people there thier familes and the world i sat watching as another plane hit the pentagon and the 1st tower of the world trade center crumbled to the ground crying being alone cause my mom and sister were sleeping and not know what to think or say to them when they awoke i heard my mom calling and she asked what sick movie i was watch about the world trade center getting blown up i cried and said it wasnt a movie we were attacked and she got out of bed and joined me at the tv as the 2nd tower fell then hearing of a plane being gunned down and another crashing in a penn... field i was scared and had no idea what to think or do I was frech from army basic training and was scared id have to go fight in war its somthing i will never forget because i could walk out my house and smell the smoke drifting down the shore line from what used to be the World Trade Center...There are other things i have seen up close and personal but for me bring back to many horrible memories to even speak of It was a day and even month ill never forget cause the folowing days my unit for the arym was activated and sent away for a year they have since come back but are now again being activated and sent to iraq to fight in this war on terrorism so thing like this dont happen again...... To the families and fellow Americans who have lost loved ones i send my love and best wishes that now in this time of griefing and rememberance you keep your faith and home that justic will come upon those who do such devious acts And to those now who are fighting for freedom in Iraq and those who have lost thier lives fighting for freedom in Iraq I Slaute you For you and then men and women who have died now and in the past and who will die in the future , whether it be police firefighters or our military, you are our heros you are the reason we remain a free country and you are the role models the youth of today need.... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was escorting a patient over to the lab when I saw on T.V this tall building with all of this smoke billowing out of it. I thought wow, I wonder what happened there??? Then I heard them say that an airplane had hit the building. I thought what an aweful accident I wonder if the pilot had a heart attack or seizure or something and lost control. Then to my shock I saw the second plane hit the second tower! Then the words were that this was highly thought to be a terrorist attack. I was mortified! The potential loss of life was enormous, and that was minimal until the towers came crashing down. I felt an emptiness and sadness that I can not explain. Then the pentagon was attacked and then I was even more frightened. Where would they attack next? Then the rumors of another plane circling that officials felt was also controlled by terrorists. This plane ended up being the fateful flight 93. I just began praying to God for his mercy and that this come to an end. I must say that since this has happened I have taken a more active awareness of current political and world events. At 27 you really don't think of those things. I had never even heard of the World Trade Center until last September 11. I am thankful to my Lord for everyday he allows me to wake up and breathe and live another day - especially when so many families lost their loved ones and would give anything for that priviledge now. I definetly tell my husband, family and friends more now than ever befroe that I love them and appreceiate them in my life. I don't think I could be as strong as some of these people who have lost so much. My sister-in-law knows a lady in Bay City, Michigan who trains dogs. This dog, Salty, which was the third dog she had trained was owned by a paralyzed and mostly blind man who was employed in the World Trade Center. When the plane hit he told his dog at the stairwell to go home. To get out of there. The dog got caught up in others trying to flee. He turned around came back 17 stories and drug his owner to the stairwell where others helped him down the stairs. Only 30 people after him would escape and survive before the tower collapsed! His loyal dog saved his life and this woman had a hand in that years ago when she trained him. There were so many heroes that dreadful day and I pray everyday for those that have lost loved ones or like Lauren Manning who was just on Oprah this week who have been physically scarred (she had over 82% of her body burned) and are constantly reminded of the effects of that day. I am very proud to be an American and proud of all those who gave of themselves sacrificially and selflessly that day and in the days to come. I personally will never forget this national tragedy. I look to the following scripture for comfort: 2 Chronicles 7:14 "IF MY PEOPLE, WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME, WILL HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND PRAY AND SEEK MY FACE AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, THEN WILL I HEAR FROM HEAVEN AND WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN AND WILL HEAL THEIR LAND." I work at the campus tv station and was doing my office hours in the office when I heard the news. The professor in charge of the station came in and told us what happened. The television was immediately turned on and we sat in silence watching. It was devastating, shocking. I left the station and went back to my dorm room. My roommate, Julie, and I turned on the TV and just cried.
