Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember at 8:47, a co-worker next door came in and told us that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. My first reaction was - How can someone miss the World Trade Center??? As events unfolded, it was becoming clearer that someone hadn't "missed" the WTC, but instead INTENDED to hit it. Within a few minutes - a 2nd plane hit the South Tower and a bit after that was the plane crash in PA. I remember thinking, How many planes are going to crash!? At the same time, reports of terrorism were being circulated and it then became complete chaos. I didn't personally lose anyone in this disaster, however, it's something I will never forget and my thoughts often go back to the victims and their families whose lives have been forever changed. Maybe some day we will understand the reason for this seemingly unreasonable and dispicable act, but until then, my faith in God - although somewhat shaken - needs to take over. I hope the children of our future never have to go through anything like this. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was getting my toddler breakfast and turned on the T.V. in the kitchen and did not understand at first what I was seeing. Then after I realized the the World Trade Centers had been hit I just stood there in complete silence - I'm sure my son was trying to get my attention, but for me it's like the world stood still for a moment. Then the plane hit the pentagon - that's when I called my husband at work to tell him I loved him and that he was a wonderful daddy. I didn't know if the whole country was soon going to be under attack. I was also about 5 months pregnant at the time September 11 occured and for a long time I kept wondering why God would want my husband and I to bring another child into this world. I felt so angry and scared, how was I going to explain to this baby that his once safe world was no longer that way. In time I came to realize that God wants us to bring people into this world to help make it a better place. To show that there is still innocence and peace and joy and laughter to be found. All of us have been forever changed by September 11, 2001. We need to always remember that day - but we need to press on and show the world that America is strong, its citizens are strong and that with every breath we take we show how thankful we are for living in Freedom. While working on this horrific day, I received a call from my mom to turn on the t.v. and she repeated, your brother, your brother!!!!I turned on the t.v. and could not believe my eyes! My body began to shake. Besides my brother who works in a federal building in Washington, I was worried about my immediate family, my children at school and my husband at work. After calming my mom down, I began to attempt to contact my brother in Washington, D.C. After several hours, I was able to leave a message on his voice mail and he did call me back. He was sitting in his office waiting for the traffic to die down. Luckily, he drove in that day from VA. He did not understand the severity of what was happening. After returning to his home to VA, he switched on the t.v. and was in total shock. After a bottle of champagne and a bottle of wine, he called me and was very upset. I tried to calm him as best I could. I could sympathize with him how he felt, for the whole nation felt this way. As we look back a year ago, I am proud to be an American and am proud to see how our country came together. It will always be in my mind and my prayers are with those victims and their families. I was fortunate. My brother left Washington, D.C. not physically hurt, but emotionally, it will be a day he will never forget either. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!! It was a sad day to bury someone we had loved and had in our lives for such a very long time. I heard on the morning news that a plane had hit the World Trade Center and I immediately yelled downstairs for my husband to turn on the news - this must be a terrible accident! Then my 10 year old son and I watched a second plane hit and we thought we were looking at a replay of the first plane. It took several minutes for us to determine what was really happening. We had to leave for the funeral and while we in the car listening to the radio - we heard the tower had fallen and then the Pentagon had been hit. It felt like the end of the world. Maybe it was okay that our grandmother did not have to live to see this tragic and terrible day in our country. I was full of rage and supriseness. I didn't even have family over there but I felt like I did because of all my friends and there family's that live over there. I watched in horror as I felt that our freedom was in jeopardy. I was so sad for all the lives lost and I had the feeling of total helplessness. I own a dance studio and my first thought was to cancel classes.......but then I decided that the children needed normalcy now more than ever! Tell us your story: I was in the seventh grade when the events of September 11th occured.I was in my homeroom class expecting it to be a normal day. We were about half way through our morning devotion when our principal came over then loud speaker asking us to come to the gym for an assembly. I had absolutely no idea what we were having an assembly for, but like many of my class mates I was all for it, I mean we could be missing class. As we got situated on the bleacher seats in the gym our principal began to speak in a very soft voice and then we began to pray. What? What did he say? Most of the kids had not heard a word he had said neither did I, until I passed a tenth grader at the time telling one of the teachers that two planes had crashed into the trade center towers. I had not found out about the other two until i got home and saw the horrific footage on CNN. By this time we were admitted to our first period class which was Algebra 1/2. I remember that class period being particularly quiet. After class I remember joking around that the world was coming to an end and after being told off by a teacher I realized the seriousness of the situation. In my second period English class I remember asking to go to the bathroom and I had the first real cry since the death of my grandfather. My boss was in New York City on business that day. We were so worried because we didn't know how close he was to the towers. We couldn't get through on his cell phone or to the hotel where he was staying. All we could do was watch the news coverage in horror and disbelief! A friend in New York finally called us to let us know our boss was fine and that his meeting wasn't scheduled first thing in the morning. Thank God! After I knew my boss was safe all I wanted to do was be with my daughter and my family. Thats just what I did. One year later I still can not believe that this happened in America, in this day and age. I pray that our leaders make the right choices. I pray that we will never have to endure this type of senseless tragedy again. We all have such different perspectives now and our priorities have shifted. May we all take nothing for granted and find peace and love in our hearts and lives. This year I have my first Grandson Logan. He wasn't alive when 911 hit; but his life will be changed forever because of it. His Dad, Mom, Grandmom and Grandfather will relate stories to him about how life "used to be" - while he tries to understand the life he lives now. Freedom means many things to many people; different perspectives. Tell us your story: At first I didn't know about the attacks on the WTC or the Pentagon till after 10 am that morning..I hadn't put on me television and i was listrening to my CD player instead of the radio to hear the latest news.. I was in the midst of getting ready to go down to the court house here in West Orange to attend my best friend's wedding..Needless to say when I got there a lady had mentioned it in passing and I tohught she was crazy and was telling some kind of joke, but by then I was already at the courthouse and missdd the wedding...I was then in the car with the married couple and their 6 month old son on our way to a reception in a diner in Bloomfield...Before we left I heard on the radio in the car that the first tower of the WTC has collapsed and then everything said was not a joke but really happening..I immediately called all my friends to see if any of them had heard the news, but when i went to call my friend Becky collect, the lady said "due to the WTC twers collapse, your call can not be completed at this time." I then went home and saw all the news on TV, and pleaded with my grandfather NOT to go to Atlantic City because I was affraid they would attack there also..He said he would be fine and he was going..I was upset about what had happened that I didn't sleep for days...It was the most tragic day in US history but to me there was a ray of light when My Friends Darlene and Michael got married on a warm sunny day that turned into tradgedy all over the world...This is my story of where I was the day the country stood still and USA became crippled... As we stood there, we heard a loud boom, we thought oh no not another attack. We immediately went to find a tv and reached the 8th floor of our office building just in time to see the second tower collapse. We started crying at having just witnessed such a horror. Many months later, we realized almost simultaneously that what we had heard that day was the first tower collapsing. We work just 25-30 miles from where the Trade Center stood. Never did we imagine that we would bear witness to such a horrific, meaningless attack which will be with everyone as long as they remember. I hadn't had the TV or radio on that morning, so I knew nothing of it. My friend and I talked about it, but at that point we didn't know it was an attack. We thought it was just an accident. As I sat in my second class that day, my professor began talking to us about what had taken place. She was so shaken by it, that she canceled class for the rest of the week. I watched in disbelief feeling tremendous anger, sorrow, and shame. I was angry that humans were capable of such delibrite acts of killing. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, when the first plane hit the Trade Towers I was in my car on my way to school. When I got there one of my classmates asked if I had heard what was going on, I had no idea what he was talking about, but as soon as I entered my classroom for Child Psychology and saw the television I began to get nervous. At that point, the second plane hadn't hit and it wasn't clear whether this was an attack or an accident. My professor chose to turn off the television and have class. By the time, class was over it was very clear to everyone that America was under attack. My school came together like they never had before. It was my senior year there and this was the first time that I had felt like Anna Maria College was a community. We gathered in the Performing Arts Center and watched the tragedy unfold on the screen there. My sense of community was enhanced when I was suddenly bombarded by people making sure I was okay because I had gotten married to a sailor only 5 months before. My friends and professors knew that, at that moment, he was on deployment, but no one knew where he was and they were all praying for his safety. Now, one year later, my husband is on another deployment. This one much different from the one of last year. He is fighting in the war against terrorism along with thousands of other military members. I pray for him and all others, as well as everyone who was affected by the attacks that took place one year ago today. It breaks my heart to know that there are so many people that have lost loved ones as the result of senseless acts of violence. It does not particularly make me feel any better that we are fighting back because no matter how long we fight we will not get back those who were lost, but maybe ridding the world of as much evil as possible will make the world a better place for the children that my husband and I will someday bring into this world. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: We were working at 55 Broadway on the 7th Floor, about 3 blocks away from the WTC. I'm sure several stories start out this way. I was doing my usual routine of answering phone calls from IT people and traders from the Wall St. world. I don't recall the exact time, but I know it was about 10 minutes before the first plane hit. I was on the phone with Mike from Cantor Fitzgerald. I even saved my book, which I used to take notes in, that shows that he was the last person I spoke to that day. I had spoken with Mike previously. He knew my name as I answered the phone and we started off with our usual conversation. If I recall correctly, Mike was one of the lead traders at Cantor Fitzgerald. The "hello's", and "how are you?s" made it seem like it was going to be just another day at my firm. I recall, he was having a problem with his trading software which he used to trade stocks. He was trying to sweep the market on a stock, but the sweeping function wasn't working for him. I told him to try doing this, and try doing that until suddenly he said that he had to go. Our phone conversation was cut short and didn't last long. He said he would give me a call back because ?something was going on?. I wasn't sure what he was referring to. After hanging up the telephone, I looked up. I saw a couple of people with hands over their mouths. Some other people were still on the phone with clients not knowing what had happened. When I looked at the television, my initial thoughts told me "everything is going to fine, just stay calm." It was very hard to keep those thoughts in my head considering the situation. As we watched the television, people made phone calls to family and friends informing those that we were alright. I called my mother and father separately, just to let them know that I was fine and we were assessing the situation. Then the second plane was coming in. You could see it on the television. You knew the people who were in the tower were not going to make it out. You knew the people on the plane were not going to survive. It had to be a mistake. Everything about this day is just a nightmare. It was complete shock and disbelief that someone was flying a plane in to a building on purpose. Then it hit. The explosion was so powerful that I remember hearing it and feeling the vibrations. At that moment, the loud-speaker over our heads came on as someone was announcing the evacuation of our building. I put down my pen, grabbed my personal belongings and started out the door. I left my book in place which still had Mike from Cantor Fitzgerald written in it. But strangely, it didn't occur to me that Mike was in the WTC until our office was downstairs where people were talking about who they knew in the WTC. Someone said Canto Fitzgerald was there on the 80th floor. That's when I realized, I was not going to hear from Mike again. I don't know if any emotions hit me at this realization aside from shock. I don't think there was room in my mind for anything else as I was trying to pay attention to the activity going on around me. I just can?t imagine what is must?ve been like for Mike or anyone else at Cantor Fitzgerald. Tell us your story: I had carpal tunnel surgery on Sept 10th late afternoon and was in bed until my hospital called me to follow-up on the outpatient surgery. I will never forget, after she had found out things were as good as they should be she said "have you watched T.V. or talked to anyone today?" My reply "no why?" Our Country has been under terristic attacks since early this morning and thousands of people have been killed! I instantly burst into tears and almost felt like I was dreaming until I got up and turned on the T.V., distruction everywhere, Oh my dear Lord how could ANYONE do this terrible, maliciuos act against the United States. HOW COULD ANYONE BE SO INHUMAINE to kill all those precious innocent people? Will this happen again? Who Did this to all of the American people? I instantly started praying for everyone in the world and for God to especially be with all of the direct victims of these terrist attacks, help us find the people and heal and care for them dear lord. I wanted to go to school and get my precious SON to hold and love! I continually pray for our government, armed forces, fireman, policeman, medical personel ect for all guidance and safety, and strength to get through this terrible 9-11 liftime chapter for all in our country. Tell us your story: It was a normal day as any other day for me but today I decided to come in early becasue we were going to be busy at Dun & Bradstreet. I logged into the cue and noticed the phones were just lighting up with customers. I figured I could make some money early before everyone else got in and be ahead of the game. One call came in from brooklyn and originally being from New York, I love talking with customers from there. We were going over the basics and all of a sudden my customer started cussing as he saw and I heard the sound of destruction. I asked what was going on and he had said a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I am thinking it was a small prop plane but with the Sound of all the cussing from his office, I knew it was much bigger. At that time the phone went dead and all those calls to our office had completely stopped. The only voices I heard were from co-workers coming into work letting others know what they heard on the radio up here. When management came, they told us that we had offices on the 11th floor and that put a concern to me as well. I started calling my friends up there but everything was busy and I couldnt get through. We ended up closing our call center down and going home. I didnt sleep that week, watching every show with new information on this. And yes, tears were shed because thats where I'm from. I remember hearing something broadcasted about a fire at the World Trade Center in New York. I quickly stopped what I was doing and devoted my attention to the news on TV. I watched as the TV camera's showed the fire in one of the towers. They were still not sure what had happened. I immediatedly thought, Oh No, Bin Laden has done something. He had been in the news so much recently. Then much to my disbelief I saw the second plane enter the picture and fly into the 2nd tower. The feelings that I felt are undiscriblable. I guess if I had to come up with a word it would be anquish----for those in the towers, on the planes, their families and for all of us Americans. How dare anyone think that they could invade us like this and kill innocent people. I felt rage for some weeks after. I work at a high school and not knowing what was going to happen next I left for work early to see that was going on there. When I arrived the school had the TV on in the office and staff were watching. Next thing we heard was that the Pentagon was hit. Then the news was saying that another plane had turned around from Cleveland and was headed, they thought, to Washington DC. I remember saying that wouldn't it be something if the passengers on that plane could overtake the hijackers. It wasn't long after I made this comment that we heard that the plane had crashed in rural Somerset PA and that apparently the passengers had given their lives to save hundreds of others--What Heroes!!! It wasn't long then before the news began broadcasting from the NY and DC sights. It made me PROUD of our country and citizens to hear of the sacrifice many many men and women had made to save others. We tried to keep a low key for the sake of the students, we didn't want to needlessly alarm them. The administration did call for a Lock-Down and placed police at the doors for extra precautions. We have numerous parents call in to tell their child that they were ok. Some came a took their child home. I felt very safe here, at the high school, and couldn't quite figure out why some people panicked. But I guess we all handled this tragic news in our own way. It is now a year later and I still can't get the image of the Trade Center Towers falling. I just pray that God will, in his time, rid this world of these evil, power hungry people. Oh, if we could all just live in peace. I feel compassion for those in this world who know nothing but war, hunger, and death. This world is such a beautiful place and is meant ALL to live in peace. I pray that God will give our nation the wisdom to do the right things so that this will never happen again.
