Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was doing a traffic study and did not have my radio on. As I was leaving I turned on the radio and realized something was terribly wrong. At first the news wasn't makng much sense, but it soon became clear that what was happening was crazy. I drove home and instantly turned on my television and liked everyone was glued to the horror that was unfolding. How could buildings fall? Who was crazy enough to do all this? How many lives were lost? Tears just began to flow like a turned on faucet. As the first reports starting coming out, the number of casualties were in the thousands. I heard possibly 20,000 people could have lost their lives. How? Why? What the hell was going on. I remember praying for families. For comfort, to find loved ones, to somehow find rest, to feel the strength provided by God in time of need, to somehow make sense of it all. It didn't and to this day doesn't. How can somehow justify killing so many innocent people? As the news began informing us what was happening and the plan of attack that the United States was considering, panic took over my whole body. You see I have a son in college and the thought that he could possibly be sent to war horrified me. I know that that doesn't sound very patriotic, but it's unimaginable to me that at 18 he would be sent to a foreign country and told to kill. Send me, fine, but my child, no. In my mind I know that war is what keeps us free, but the thought of losing my child scared me to death. September 11, 2001 changed the world. It wasn't by choice and I don't think that anything will ever make us feel secure and protected again. I will continue to pray for these families and ask God to please "Bless America". Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Just before 8:46 that morning, I had pulled into the parking garage and turned off the car. I walked to two blocks up to my office, after stopping for coffee, and was just sitting down at my desk and logging into the computer when a co-worker, who was telecommuting that day, got online and instant messaged me. She said a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. She was handing me details as she got them from the news and then all of a sudden she says she watched the second plane hit. I called my mom, who worked in Melville, NY, on Long Island. Her office was just finding out the news as well and were looking for a television. It was almost impossible to get to CNN.com or any of the other online news sites. Then the word that the Pentagon had been hit. I immediately called my mom to let her know I was OK. My office is just half a mile from the National Institutes of Health and the National Naval Medical Center, so she was understandably worried. I woke my husband up, who is in the Navy and stationed in Hawaii. I told him the news and he went to look for a TV while I would try and reach his mother in Texas. As I made contact with friends and family, some having to resort to email to reach me and reassure themselves, my mind started working again and I realized that my brother is a NYC paramedic, along with is new wife. I called my mom again, getting through after several tries, and asked her if she knew where Chris was. She said he was home and I asked about my other brother, who works on the Staten Island Ferry and she said she was worried about him. Well, turns out, my brother who worked on the ferry was home, but the other, Chris, was at work at Flushing Memorial Hospital. He and his wife were assigned to two different triage areas, where, unfortunately, they had no one to treat. We didn't know they were ok until much later that night. I remember standing on the street, looking into a restaurant that had TV screens (it wasn't opened yet) and talking with a complete stranger who wished me the best in finding out if my brother was still alive. I will never forget that day. Or the days that followed. I have yet to go to the World Trade Center and look at it. I did participate, with my mom and daughter, in a Unity Walk near the Pentagon and can still remember the sight of the gaping hole. No, I will never forget that day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My family and I had just finished a road trip from Salt Lake City, Utah to Maryland. We arrived, and were staying, at the home of family on September 10, 2001. On the morning of the 11th we had an appointment at 10:30 AM, through the office of Senator Hatch, to tour the US Capitol Building. We left late that morning, and did not turn on the TV before leaving. Our drive to the Bethesda Metro station was peaceful and uneventful. We were visiting with each other and did not turn on the radio. Nor did we bring a cell phone with us. We planned on a nice, leisurely day in downtown DC, just being tourists. We arrived at Union Station in downtown Washington, DC at about 10:30AM. Since we were obviously late for our tour appointment we tried to use the pay phone in the Metro station to call Senator Hatches office, to reschedule our tour appointment. All of the pay phones were out of service. We then took the escalator up into Union Station, with the intent of finding a working pay phone, and something to eat, since in our rush none of us had eaten anything before leaving. In Union Station we were not able to use the pay phone either. When we started walking that direction, a guard stopped us and told us we needed to exit the station because there was a bomb threat. We exited Union Station, with the intent of walking to the Hart Senate Building, to reschedule our tour appointment. What we saw we have since named our Tour of Terror. Not that it was terrifying to us, since we were blissfully unaware of the events that had already happened in NY and just across the Potomac River at the Pentagon. What we saw was a city in panic. Backhoes placing Jersey barriers in front of Union Station was the first thing we saw upon exiting the building. We casually walked up towards the Capitol, where we saw police stationed about every 50 feet around the Capitol, with many more Capitol police putting yellow tape around the Capitol grounds. We continued to walk, toward the Hart Senate building, where we saw even more Capitol police, lined shoulder to shoulder. They formed a human wall between the Capitol building on one side and the Supreme Court building on the other. It is one of the most amazing things I have seen. Even though I was still unaware of the events of that morning, it hit me that these men and women were lined together, protecting our nations Capitol, even to their own deaths if necessary. I was video taping the entire time. At one point, a man stopped to make a comment that panic was an interesting thing to observe. I agreed, because I was not paniced. I thought everyone that was paniced was feeling so because of the bomb threat at Union Station, just a couple of blocks away. We continued our walk, and of course realized that no one was getting into the Hart Senate building, let alone taking a tour of the Capitol Building. This is where another man told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. We thought he meant, as so many did, that a plane had accidently hit one of the tall towers. We decided to head to the Smithsonian Metro station, and began walking that direction. We saw bomb squads heading for Union Station, military personnel escorting news media, Senators in the green park areas of DC, and heard more sirens and whistles than you could ever imagine. Everyone was exiting the city and the traffic was stopped completely. As we neared the Mall we could see smoke in the distance, above the tree lines. We would realize later that this was smoke from the Pentagon fires. We left Washington, DC safely. Somewhat aware that something big and terrible had happened. In the Smithsonian Metro station a man told us that two passenger jets had hit both World Trade Center towers. It was hard to believe. When we arrived at the Bethesda Naval Hospital, where we had parked and taken the Metro from, we found more security. The Navy base had been locked up tight. In our absence, Jersey barriers had been placed at every entrance and exit, but one. As we exited the base and drove back to our family's home, we listened to the radio. And then like every other person on the planet we were glued to the TV for the next few days. Watching over and over with horrendous disbelief the two, tall, towers of the World Trade Center be hit, and then colapse. We also listened to the story unfold of the bravery of the passengers and crew on Flight 93. Lot's of what if's linger in my mind. What if we had arrived in DC earlier? What if Flight 93 wasn't brought down by an incredibly brave group of people? It is overwhelming this sacrifice that was made. There is no way to thank someone for such an act. But I will always remember. We were one of the thousands stranded. We had planned on flying out from Reagan Int'l aiport on the morning of the 12th. We weren't so excited to fly anywhere. We were also lucky, in that we had a place to stay. People that we knew. Thanks to them, for taking care of us for a few more days. We flew out from Baltimore, on the night of the 15th. Many people can attest to the nervousnous and anxiety in the aiports on that day. Each passenger suspicious of the other, but also each passenger being part of an alliance against a threat. And we had "Dave", a Flight Martial on our flight to Atlanta. Thank you Dave for being there. And now, 1 year later, I am remembering quietly the events of that day. I am at work, and after work I will go home. Something that over 3,000 people had taken away from them, this life of working and going home to loved ones. It has been a difficult year, emotionally. I can't bear to watch the planes hit the World Trade Center, and watch the buildings collapse, again. I will not watch any TV coverage today, just for that reason. I will say a quiet, respectul, grateful, and solemn thanks in my heart once again to those on Flight 93. Tell us your story: it was early morning 7:35am on a Tuesday when i herd about the planes that hit the towers i was just sitting down to breakfast with my baby cousin nico who is only 4 years old. and thats when my moms sister new she had to go and help and find people in that horrible rubble. i was in tears that day because i had just rembered my cousin stephanie worked in the world trade tower on the 99th floor at the very tops and i found out that she never made it out but hours later they found her and no she didnt survive. sorry to say we miss her dearly. i will never ever forget that tragic day. i am still having nigthmares from it. but i know now that anyone who was in the towers has gone to Heaven. and they are all looking down on us. im coming to Ny city to say my last goodybyes to my cousin who died there. ill be there after the christmas holiday. to say farewell to everyone. may we all go on now and rember those dearly who are still with us today. We had not turned on the TV that morning and so I did not know what was going on until my sister who was on her way to work and heard it on her radio. Tell us your story: I am a speech-language pathologist and was working as the preschool SLP for the Knox County Educational Service Center, at the time. I had just finished therapy with one of my preschoolers and one of the Itinerant Preschool teachers told me the horrible news. She said a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center and they thought it was terrorists. It looked like something out of a movie when I saw it on t.v., like it wasn't real. It was the most horrible feeling. Not knowing whether the entire nation was under attack or what was going to happen next. Once the second plane had hit and the plane had hit the Pentagon, I surely thought we were under attack from a rogue nation. I had nightmares to weeks following the attacks and I did my fair share of crying, along with the rest of the nation. It definitely made me realize what's important in life, your family, friends, and our freedom. I have since gave birth to our first child, who was conceived one month following the attacks. I hope I can teach her to respect and take pride in our nation, and to fight for it, if need be. I know I would if called upon. I will just continue to do my job to the best of my ability and I won't let anyone make me fearful to walk outside of my own home, or anywhere else for that matter. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was doing some lawnwork and feeling very sorry for myself, because just days before I had lost my job of almost 17 years due to downsizing. When my son came out to tell me about the World Trade Center I thought it was the old news story about the bombing of the Trade Center in the 90's. However, he soon set me straight. After the news sunk in I felt a deep, deep sadness for all the peopledirectly affected and a terrible sense of loss for the citizens of the U.S., because they lost their innocence. Our world would never be the same secure place that it was on September 10,2001. I also felt terribly ashamed, because I could always find another job, however, the people directly affected would never be able to put the shredded pieces of their lives back together. My husband called me shortly after the 1st plane hit the World Trade Center - he had heard the news on the radio. I immediately turned on the television. Within a minute or two of turning on the television, the 2nd plane hit. I can still remember saying "Oh my God, Oh my God". I watched throughout the day. I watched coverage of the plane crashing into the Pentagon, the crash in Pennsylvania and the tragic tumbling of both towers. I remember being drawn to all of the news coverage. I felt helpless but felt that the very least I could do was watch the news coverage, listen to stories of survivors and to the stories of families who lost those so dear to them. As I watch the 1 year anniversary coverage, I am so proud to be an American. I am proud of America's courage and faith. I am humbled by the graciousness and dignity of families who lost so much and I admire their strength and their willingness to share stories of the lifes lost. God Bless America and the families who faced such tragedy. May we always remember those lost and the courage of those who saved so many. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work listening to a book on tape. All of sudden things kind of went crazy. I saw people up in the aisles talking. At first I didn't really pay attention to what was going on. At 9:15, my friend Cathy & I took our break and that is when I first heard that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane.They had a tv on in the cafeteria and we sat and watched them replay footage of the second plane hitting the the second tower. I just sat there in disbelief wanting to make sure my children were all right. They were in school taking the ISTEP tests but as I found out later, they were fine. Around 10:30 our boss called us together for a little meeting. She had told in light of what happened we could go home if we wanted to. I went home and spent the rest of the day watching the coverage on tv transfixed, yet horrorfied. I was so far away but I felt like I needed to do something. The only thing I could do at that point was to pray for all those souls that got caught when the buildings came down...May God rest their souls. He was listening to a news broadcast on the radio that sounded serious so I asked him, "Has something bad happened"? His normally happy and friendly expression was grim as he told me that America was under attack. I turned on my television just as the second plane crashed into the WTC and my blood turned cold. I watched in horror for several minutes and as I realized how many babies weren't going to see their parents again I simply had to get my own babies near me. I picked my sons up from school and brought them home. That afternoon, we went to a neighborhood church. We sat with our arms around each other and held on like we've never held on before. Our lives were changed forever. We don't go to bed or leave our home without letting each other know how much we love each othe. My story begins when I woke up in the morning and was getting ready to go to school,when suddenly my dad called and said that he just found out that somebody attack the World trade center i quikly turned on the tv and i was shocked to see smoke coming out of one of the towers and i watched a another plane coming and hitting the second tower. I was shocked i could not believe it. It was really horrible to see the secomd plane go in the sound was like a really really big bomb blast. I was stunned for a few moments and i just couldn't believe what just happened in front of my eyes and i went to school after that and everything had changed in school everybody was really sad and i was too because i have never seened anything like this before i have heard of these things in history but never encountered one till september 11, 2001. However, when I was in my eigth grade American History class, My teacher got a phone call. When he hung up he turned on the TV to MSNBC and we watched as the first tower burned. Soon, the tower fell and the second burning tower was left with smoke billowing out of it. When the second tower came crashing to the ground, it was hard to believe that terrorists had actually taken out the World Trade Center. It was difficult to imagine that where two amazingly high buildings had once stood, all that was left was debris and ash. After the second tower fell, the power went out in my school. We had no idea if there had been a terrorist attack in Florida or not since there wasn't any power. Everybody got really quiet and the teachers made us get under our desks as the school went to Code Red. The power came back after about five minutes or so and we were all relieved that there hadn't been an attack in Florida. I was at home having breakfast with my wife ,Carol, when the phone rang and our daughter Michele was on the line. She asked if we were watching TV. My wife said no and wanted to know the reason. Michele informed us that a plane hit the World Trade Center. I turned on the television and saw a news flash that said "The World Trade Center was hit by a plane". We saw the plane hit the tower and thought it was a replay but,it was not the second tower got struck.We yelled out loud God Save the people. We could not believe what happened and wondered who could have done this to us. I feel very lucky because the train they found empty underneath the Twin Towers was the train I always used to ride to get to work. I was so tired-staying up most of the night with her-that I fell asleep on my stomach at the foot of the bed that night. When I woke up in the morning, I lifted my head and saw the TV, which had been on all night. There was Katie Couric, saying that the 2nd plane had just hit, and I couldn't believe my eyes. I thought, "What in the world is this?!" I felt my stomach drop as the story unfolded before my eyes. They repeatedly showed the first plane crash-people had thought the first one was just an accident. The video showed people watching the first plane hit, then going back to what they were doing, like it was no big deal. It wasn't until the second one hit that people realized that something very terrible was happening. Like every other person in the world, I sat and watched, wanting it to be just a bad dream I'd soon wake up from. Finally realizing that it was not a dream, a wave of hopelessness and terror washed over me. I thought to myself, "This is it. We are all going to die. They are going to get us. This is the end. My babies don't get to grow up!" Shaking with my sobs, I pulled my precious son out of his bed and put him into mine. I just cradled him in my arms, softly sobbing. He didn't wake up-he still sleeps like a rock to this day. I then went into my precious daughter's room to watch her sleep. I continue to cry as I touched her back gently. She continued to sleep peacefully, as well. I felt so lost, so helpless, and so desperately lonely, I called my husband at work. He just asked, "Some planes hit some buildings somewhere?" There was no way for him to understand the magnitude of the unfolding tragedy. I remember sobbing, begging for him to come home. He couldn't, though. All I thought about was him being hurt-we still had no idea if these were isolated incidents or not. I called my mom and my sister-anyone I could think of- just to try and find one person that wasn't scared and that could comfort me. It turned out that everyone was as scared and unsure as I was. I sat there again, crying, watching my children peacefully asleep, blissfully unaware of what was going on. I just feared for their future. Like many others, I did not recover quickly. I remained glued to the couch for several weeks, severely depressed. I literally felt hopeless, paralyzed, and just weak. I couldn't get up. I'm normally a girl that loves to eat, but I couldn't even force myself to take a bite of food or even drink. I was dehydrated and lost about 30 lbs. very quickly. The only thoughts on my mind were thought of fear, death, and tragedy. It's no way for anyone to live. I knew I had to make some big changes in my life, when it started affecting my children. I was in the middle of another sob-fest, thinking everyone was asleep (I always tried to wait until everyone was in bed to start watching the news and crying my eyes out). Out came my then 2 year old son, looking very concerned. I felt ashamed that he caught me, and fearful that he'd be worried. He came to over to the couch, and softly stroked my hair. In his sweet, little voice he whispered, "It's gonna be okay, Mommy." I still burst into tears when I talk about that!!!! It was like I was smacked upside the head, or something. I finally realized that my behavior was impacting my precious children, and that I had to make some changes quickly. One night, while in a chat room online, I was having a good conversation with many of the people there. I finally confessed to everyone that I was severely depressed because of what had happened, and I asked if anyone could help me. That's how desperate I was-I begged complete strangers for any kind of help. That's when a lady instant messaged me, asking if I knew the Lord. Sure, I knew about Him. I knew what Jesus Christ did for mankind, and I always believed in that much. She introduced the Sinners' Prayer to me, where a person asks for Christ's forgiveness, and invites Him into their hearts so that they may have eternal life because of His sacrifice on the cross. We said the prayer together, via a little chat window. I began to cry as I said it aloud-this was me literally crying out to God for help. As I finished the prayer, I literally felt a weight fly from my shoulders-that is the only way I can describe it. It felt like a bird that had been perched on my shoulders had just flown away. I was trembling, scared, and excited all at once. I just crumbled, falling to my knees. I sobbed, "Thank you, thank you," over and over feeling peace fill my mind and body. It was SO incredible!!! That was in November of 2001. I was baptized in February of 2002. I still struggle with things here and there. I still make so many mistakes. I still have my down days, my bummer days. Some major things are different, though. I am at peace, and I no longer live in fear. I also have no need to fear, because I know that life goes on after the life on this earth ends. I know that God loves me, loves us all, and will take care of us. I know that God has a special plan for my life, just as He did for all those that died on September 11th. It gives me comfort knowing they did not die in vain. Their tragic losses brought this country together, and made us stronger than ever! I felt at peace seeing how we as a country reacted to the tragedy. It made me proud to see the lines going out the doors of the military recruiting offices, the American flags, the kindness towards strangers. For once, we were all united, as we always should have been. That was God hard at work, turning what was meant for evil and using it for good. Now, I fear we as a country are getting back to our complacent state again. Too much fighting with one another to see the big picture. It scares me sometimes, but at least now I can pray about it and know that God is bending an ear to me. I don't know how or if I could go on without God's love in my life. I am forever changed. I will no longer fear for my life, my family's life, or anyone else's. He promises us a hope and a future...He's revealed Himself as very trustworthy, so I'm going to believe Him. I've heard people say that this was New York's tragedy, why does everyone else care, etc., etc. I am thousands of miles away from New York, but let me tell you, it hit home. It might as well have been in my front yard. We all suffered right along with New York. I am still affected by it-in good ways and in bad ways. I still have the flashbacks, the deep sadness, and the nightmares, but at the same time I'm a better, more patient and loving parent and wife. I appreciate my family and others in my life. I cherish life more. I am more compassionate. I now live life day to day. I live each day as it will be my last. Funny how a horrible tragedy can straighten a person's priorities. In many ways, the tragedy on September 11th saved my life. So many died, yet I was born into new life. That's something I think about often, and will always think about and be thankful for. Forever. My friend Debbie told me to turn on the t.v. "We're under attack!" My first action was to attempt to reach my daughter, who lives elsewhere in California (I finally talked to her that evening). On the way to work, I listened to the radio in my truck and, once at work, watched events unfold on television and on my computer. Not much work got done; people stood around the t.v. all day. The first call I received in my office that morning came from a local travel agent. She had arranged a trip to Portugal and the Azores for my boss, his wife, and some of their friends. The group was due home that day. The travel agent related that the group was in the air when the attacks on America began and their plane, scheduled to land in Newark, was being rerouted to Canada. Eventually the plane landed in Halifax. Some 6000 or so airline passengers were rerouted to Halifax that day, and the Canadians were so kind to everyone. On September 11'th, I was at home by myself doing my schoolwork. I am homeschooled so I was home when it happened. I had a sick feeling that something realy bad was going on. I guess you could call it a perminision of some sort. I had no idea that it was so bad though. My dad came home and practicaly jumped out of his truck and ran into his room. He slammed the door shut too and that is when I knew something was realy wrong. I did't want to realy wory about it so I turned on the television. I turned a few chanels and that is when I saw it. I was so sick to my stoumache. At first I didn't know what was happening. I saw the smoke when I turned to that channel and I was like what on earth is happening. Thats when I heard the words... " America has been attacked and the twin towers have been hit". I started to cry. It scared me so much that I just realy couldn't move. I was parilysed with fear. When my dad came back by and went back to work all we could do was look at each other. He knew I knew but he did not want to talk about it to me in case I didn't know. I get upset about these things realy easily and he didn't want to tell me that we were at war untill it was official. I called everyone I knew and we all wached it together. Then an aquaintance of mine called and wanted me to come over, and that is when my parents told me we were at war. I told her I couldn't and when I hung up the phone I burst into tears and could not stop crying. Allthough I did not know anyone in the towers or on the planes, it broke my heart. Then I got sick again when I saw OBL's people celebrating. I thought to myself, how could some one human do such a thing like this? Today I joined a memorial service in our Hospital and they had a voice over of actual calls from the people trapped in the towers, while they played Sarah McGauclens "Angel". I just burst into tears like everyone else in that building did. I loaded myself up with red white and blue. I even wore three extra rings just so that I could have a red white and blue ring on. I love America and all the people in it. I mourn for those who have been lost and the familys of those people. God bless everyone and may peace someday come with no more wars and tears.
