He just recently relocated and sometimes called in the mornings. I was half asleep while talking on the phone so things were already not really registering. Just at the moment I decided to turn on the television the awful image of a plane flying through the World Trade Center had just shown. I was not really sure what was going on. I always watch in the morinigns but this time my stomach was torn up. I was on the phone trying to explain what I had just seen and my friend did not believe me. No one in America believed it either. I will never forget sharing that moment with someone I love and never forget that image. I am so lucky to be able to keep the ones I love but unlucky to have to share the departure of so many fellow americans. As long as I live I will never forget. All of a sudden we saw a plane crash into the first tower. I thought to myself, is this some kind of sick joke? I knew nothing like this could happen to America. I was afraid because i didn't know what was going on and i had no idea what was going to happen next. Usually everybody is late to all their classes but on September 11, 2001 we all ran to our next class to see what was going on. Yes i am a little more cautious in what i do and where i go but i havent changed anything about my life because if we change our normal lifestyle then the terrorists have won. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had a scheduled MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) on Sept. 11, and was put into the machine right before 9am. The technicians gave me the bad news that while the headphones they put on my head would block some of the louding knocking sounds an MRI produces, the CD player wasn't working, so I couldn't listen to music while inside. Would I mind listening to the radio? After a few minutes of knocking and unrememorable pop music playing over the headset, the radio suddenly cut to a news broadcast, describing how a "small plane" had hit the World Trade Center. Having worked as a commuter to NYC (in publishing), I thought, "Well, it really was just a matter of time that something like that happened," and didn't think much more of it. Then the music was interrupted again, and the second plane hit was reported. My mind suddenly started thinking, "This is deliberate." I began panicking. The radio reported that the first plane was from Boston -- I had friends flying from Boston to LA that morning. My heartrate went up: in the isolation, I could feel everything, and nothing. I was in a tank, alone, with loud knocks all around, and no one to talk to, to tell me what was =really= going on. The technicians cut in on a microphone and reminded me to stay still: apparently I was moving in agitation. I held completely still while they told me my heartrate was too high: was I perhaps afraid of small places? I told them what I was hearing on the radio. They responded that the radio wasn't playing out in their area; perhaps I was imaging things. That sort of thing, planes hitting the WTC, couldn't possibly be happening. "Sometimes people imagine things while in the isolation of the MRI," they said. I began to doubt what I thought I was hearing. Maybe it was a radio drama. Time went by. Reports kept coming in. I was still in isolation, as they had to extend the MRI tests. Then I heard about the Pentagon. My imagination filled in the images more clearly than I've ever seen before -- very strange. What was next? Boston itself? We were only 60 miles away -- too close if someone had a pocket nuke or another device. No, that wasn't possible. I began to wonder if the techs were right: was I imagining it all? Finally the test ended and I could leave. I told the techs once more about the radio broadcasts, and once more they rejected the idea that it had really happened. The clinic was strangely quiet. Everyone was going about their business as if nothing was happening. No one had heard what I had heard. I felt as if I were still in the MRI chamber: isolated in my knowledge. I was =sure= it had happened, but what if ... ? It was not until I got into my car and turned on the radio, and I could confirm it all. It =was= happening. I hadn't imagine it after all. It was the closest thing to feeling as if I'd truly lost my mind as I've ever felt. But that was nothing compared to what others were going through. I knew so many people in New York. Including some living in Battery Park City -- right in the shadow of the WTC. What about them? They turned out to be safe, and in fact came to live with me for a month and a half before returning home; home beside the rubble and the smell and the fear. My friends flying from Boston on Sept 11? -- one had delayed his flight. The other was on his plane. Danny's gone now -- no body to bury. My family and i had just moved to Sterling Virginia 2 months previous because my father had accepted a job at the Pentagon. We were all reeling from the shocks of moving three thousand miles away from everything that we had grown accustomed while living in Washington State. On the morning of September 11th, it was like any other day. We were all rushing around trying to get ready for work and school. My dad rushed out of the house first, his Supervisor from his old job was flying into Dulles later that morning and he wanted to make sure that everything was up to par. I took my time and was almost late to school, but it was history, so i kinda brushed it away. I was sitting in Geometry class when our principal came over the announcements and told us about the plane hitting the first tower. As horrible as this sounds, i really didnt know what was going on, so i just kinda went along with the lesson. A few minutes later the principal chimed in again and told us that another plane had hit another tower. i was really beginning to get scared at that point because i had no idea what was going to happen next. Unfortionatly though, the next thing that i heard was that the pentagon had been hit. That was it for me. i felt as if the room was spinning. I began shaking and tears began streaming down my face. my teacher just kept going on with the lesson, completely oblivious as to what was happening. My school was put into a lock down, and i was in a portable trailer, detached from the entire school. The more i sat there, the more that i began to panick. i began invisioning my father dying and that thought scared me more than anything else. Finally, we were permitted to go to our next class, and i got to see some of the footage of the pentagon and the feeling came back when i saw that the plane had it the same section of where my fathers office was. I got up, walked out of class and just sat in the office, waiting for a phone to open up. FInally at around noon, i got ahold of my mother, who told me that my dads boss was alright and my dad had gotten to the pentagon and found out that he had a meeting that day that he didnt know about. Tell us your story: September 11th before lunch had begun about ten of my classmates had been taken away leaving the rest of us confused and left to wonder if there was something wrong in the outside world. Recess was cancled folloed by the grones and complains of everyone about the injustice.LIttle did we know lives were being taken from people as we spoke. later in the day our teacher gave a long speach on how there are horible people in the world and that if our parents werent home when we got there we needed to come straight back to the school. This scared me beyond belief. I wondered what in the world is going on. SO many bad thoughts ran through my head. Upon returning home i was greeted by the imegery of people jumping out of the world trade center. I spent the next three hours locked in the bathroom fighting back tears and vomit that had both arisen at the horrific thought of what those people were thinking to have to jump out of the building. That night i didnt sleep. I kept having nightmares of planes crashing killing everyone i knew and loved. This day was truly the day i relized that the world is full of things worse then my 11 year old mind had ever thought would have to comprehend. I was sitting at my desk in 1D520 when all of a sudden there was a loud BOOM!!!!!!! At first I thought damn they have messed up somewhere cause they were doing renovations in the new corridors. I was pinned against my desk with debris, smoke and fire all around me. I called out to my coworkers but no one answered. Something fell from out of the sky and hit me in the back of my head. I then thought ?I GOT TO GO. I CAN?T DIE I JUST HAD BABY!!! I then somehow got free from my desk and dove under my desk. I reached my hand into my cabinet and grabbed my purse. While under my desk, I kicked the back of my desk out and crawled through only to meet with more falling debris, smoke and fire. Two of my coworkers, Janice Jackson and Doug Knickerbocker pulled me out from under the debris. We ran and crawled over bodies, parts of bodies and total destruction until we reached what used to be the E ring and a big hole. There were people on the other side helping us get through. The hole that you saw with the smoke coming out of it on television, that is the hole that we came out of. I was sitting on the grass just staring at the Pentagon still unaware of what had happened. I ended up in the Washington Hospital Center ICU unit with burns on my hands, arms and hair, cuts on my feet and severe smoke inhalation. I was in the hospital for a week and a half; spending four days on a respirator. I was the first Pentagon survivor to go home. It felt strange leaving the hospital and returning home because at the hospital I felt safe, here out in the world I DO NOT!!! I still have nightmares. I do not like loud sudden noises. I watch the planes and helicopters fly overhead hoping they don?t fall on me. Mentally I?m a wreck!!! I cry a lot for friends, coworkers and myself that perished that day. Traffic was heavy that day because of construction so I settled in for the 30 minute trip down a 5 mile stretch of 96th Street. I stopped at a traffic light and heard our local Christian radio station say that a small plane had been flown into the Twin Towers. I thought it was terrible, but I had no idea what it really was and like a lot of people, just thought it was a pilot who had become incapacitated while flying and flew terribly off course. I arrived at work and some IBM'ers had a television on in a conference room. It's hard to see the enormity of such a horrific event on a 19" screen, but we watched with sickening horror as the 2nd plane hit and finally realized that this was more than an accident. We held our collective breath as Tower One collapsed and were sick at our stomachs when we saw Tower Two follow suit. That day, work fell by the wayside as we watched, speechless. There just weren't any words to say that could relieve the depth of anxiety over what we had witnessed, even from so far away. We were anxious to hear the status of employees who work in the area and were relieved to find out that initially, our colleagues were safe. We grieved more when found out later that one of our employees had been on one of the planes and had perished. As it was with everyone I talked to in the days following, all aspects of life revolved around the attacks. Travel plans were delayed or cancelled, some executives opted not to fly for fear of more attacks. (I don't tend to hear that anymore.) I eventually encountered IBM employees who couldn't take calls because they were attending funerals for victims. I think that's when the depth of human tragedy really began to register for me on a personal level. I spent hours watching television and grieving when bodies were recovered, trying to imagine the depth of sorrow their families must feel, even today. I almost feel as though I have no right to grieve as I do because I am so far away; silly, I guess. If I could carry the grief of just one person from New York or Washington or Pennsylvania, I would. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had no idea what was going on that morning. It was a normal and fast paced morning for me and my 2 boys. As most moms know getting everything together and everyone out the door can be a job in its self. That morning I did not have the news on, I remember the day was sunny and warm. I was on the way to work with no knowledge of the events that where taking place. I was not informed until a co-worker meet me at the door as I walked in and asked if I had heard what had happened. As I got to my desk I saw that one of my other co-workers had a small TV on. The first tower was in flames and smoke and for a brief moment the camara caught the images of people falling from the building. I stood, not being able to take in all that I had just saw. Them moments later I saw another plane enter the area and the 2nd tower was in flames too. All I could say was "all my god". I could not believe that this could happen to the US. I was angry and hurt, I could not believe that someone could hate us so much. It was a day that changed my life and my families. My husband left work to get the boys, he need to be with them that day. He and other parents were doing the same here in Franklin, WI. I cried that week for the families who lost love ones, but also for America. Today, it is Septmber 11, 2002 and I still cry in disbelief. But as Americans we can and will over come this tragic event and the healing be long in coming but we will still help those who need it. When the attacks started, I was sleeping... I had the T.V. on. I recall having this horrible dream of this plain hitting a building. I woke up scared to death!...Come to find that this was'nt a bad dream at all, the first tower had been hit! I was dumbfounded. I was wondering "How could that piolet have made such a mistake..." then the other tower was hit... I realized that THIS WAS NOT A MISTAKE!!! I started crying... I wanted Jeff here. I was so afraid! I ALWAYS REMEMBER, IT WAS A WEEK SINCE SCHOOL WAS IN SESSION FOR ME. I WAS IN THE 8TH GRADE AT THE TIME, AND MY PRINCIPLE CAME ON, AND TOLD TEACHERS NOT TO TURN ON THE ON THE TELIVISON. AT THAT TIME ME AND MY FRIENDS WERE WONDERING WHAT WAS UP. SO TWO HOURS LATER WE WERE AT LUNCH AND THE LUNCH LADY SAID TO ME THE WORLD TRADE CENTER WAS HIT BY TWO PLANES, AND I RAN TO MY CONSLURE. SHE HAD NO CLUE WAT WAS GOING ON, UNTIL FINALLY GOT HOME AND MY FAMILY WAS AROUND THE TELIVISON CRYING. Famed majestic landmarks, the Twin Towers crumble, imploding into billions of bits of molten steel, jagged glass, seared human flesh, and flailing broken bones. Escaping spiked and surging fire balls, staff vaulted through windows. A canine-toothed wing of the Pentagon is broken in the aftermath of the devastation: a massive death toll of innocents remains lodged, buried alive, fifty feet under, feeling the cold-bloodied hard rubble, a steely glint of hope, five warm-blooded survivors are unearthed. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I count myself among those fortunate Americans who does not know any of the Sept. 11 victims. I didn't know anyone on the planes, in the towers, at the Pentagon. Yet we are all brothers and sisters as Americans and I still feel an immense anger and grief over what happened to us. I love America and I feel like I knew everyone who died. I've read every story I can get my hands on. The pilots, the firemen and women, the police, the employees, the passengers, their families. In a sense I needed to feel bonded with them to overcome some of my own grief. I remember talking to my father about an hour after terror struck our country. I was crying into the phone, "Dad, I don't know what to do. It's horrible. I feel horrible. Should I go get the kids out of school? This is the worst day of my life. It's the worst day in America." He quietly responded, "Terri, I lived through the days of Pearl Harbor and WWII, and this is the worst day of MY life too." I spent hours in front of the television and reading every newspaper and magazine I could get my hands on. I still do. I still feel anger that my children are scared and that something has been taken from us forever. I feel sorrow for the families. I feel pride in my President and military. Am I different? You bet. We have flown an American flag at our house daily for 10 years and we will always do so. I've always had a bathroom decorated in patriotic symbols of red, white and blue. My patriotism hasn't wavered but grown. I still love my husband and children as much as ever, yet I hug them a little harder and keep them closer. I'll never forget sitting on the couch a year ago watching the morning news on CNN when it changed quickly to the towers and one on fire. I'll never forget screaming, "OH MY GOD, it has to be terrorism," as I watched a second plane hit the towers. And, feeling like I had never felt in my life. Real fear. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 It was the morning of September 11, 2001 a beginning of a new normal day in Gasport. I did my regular routine. Took a shower, dressed, eaten and went to school. It was just a regular day for me nothing unusual. Right? I just came into my second class when it happened. The weird thing was we were just talking about this kind of traities in are Global Studies Class. My teacher Mrs. Capan received a phone call right in the middle of the lecture. Her face was grave and with a worried look, right then and there I knew something was wrong. She hung up the phone and raced to the television and turned it on CNN. And replied that something bad has happened. At first I just saw one of the planes not knowing that this was reality. I didn't know what was going on I just though it was a stunt act or something. I think everyone was thinking the same thing. Almost like slow motion another plane came and exploded into the other twin tower. The only thing I was thinking was it was a repeat of the first plane. But it was not so. I couldn't believe this could happen. Two planes crash into the twin towers. How, Why? Couldn't the people in the planes see the towers? And turn away from them? Then the bell rang and we had to go to be next class. Luckily I had art next and we watched some more. When I walking through the halls it was starting to seep into me now. I realized that people were dieing. People were jumping out of very high building, to get out of the burning building. But knew they were going to die anyway. It made me sick thinking about it. How could a person do this? Then the whole class thought of something. The next place the terrorist could attack is Niagara Falls. We live only an hour or less away and we have a nuclear power plant also very close. So we just sat there waiting to get blown up or something. I really never thought of dieing or anything it was just scary. I don't know I guess I was thinking about my family at that point. But it is a vague memory now. Then I was thinking did I know anyone who was in the two towers. Luckily I didn't, but some weren't so lucky. Even though there were no deaths in my family, I felt like something was taken always from me. Like I really lost a member of a friend of the family. Just when I was thinking of this breaking news went on again the pentagon was hit too in Washington and another airplane was coming. One of my family members was lucky though he just left the building when the plane hit it. I couldn't believe it. How could people's conscious let them kill so many people. It makes me sick, angry and sad at the very same time. NEW YORK!!! MY HOME!!! Be the one place were terrorist decide to attack. Since September 11, I opened my eyes and so many people around me. I never realized the conflicts of people today. How people that are not in America are still fighting for there rights that we all ready have. Some are being bombed every day, but still holding hope. This year I learned religion but?sometimes I don't under stand. Religion. ?Or believes allow you to kill innocent people that are millions of miles away from you and half don't know why you take away there dads, moms, children, brothers or sisters and many others that were so close to. Some people who were killed didn't know how to do their ABC's. Or, there were parents who had young ones at home that they will never see again. This I don't under stand. People are starting to be American again. I think. People have started to put flags up for the people who have died during this tragedy but do they know what it means, to be American. Like we have to say every day before classes. The Pledge to the Flag I pledge Allegiance To the Flag of the United States of America And to the republic For which it stands, One Nation Under God, Indivisible, with Liberty And Justice for all. When kids say this, do they know what this means? Heck no! They just think it's a boring pledge they have to make. And I know I was one of them, but now there is a meaning for the pledge for me now and many other people in my school and many other schools. I remember my mom crying while watching the news because a fire fighter died. And the families were morning over his death and hoping to find his body. I never knew my mom could cry so much. There was another a person who was just working that day and saw the plane coming and called her husband and left a message on the answer machine that she loved him. That really got me. I use to take every thing for grant. My family my friends everything. I never thought that something could be taken away from you. When you here plane now you think. "Are they terrorist? Or are they just a regular plane?" There is much paranoia lately, but what can you do. More security? They think they boosted security people still pass through. Then there is even a more problem that just came up after the terrorist attack. RACISM!!!!! All I hope is that the people who read my opinion and my story that they think about on what I said. Even though some people chose to kill themselves to kill other people, I don't believe in hating people who look like them or are maybe are relatives of them. Terrorist are people and they have family or people around them that don't believe in killing. So why hurt people who don't believe in killing. And that September 11 is remembered to all people even though there is great pain, but is also a new beginning. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: One of my coworkers saw the news on a website before the sites got clogged. After that I couldn't get any information via the web. I was in my basement office, so I couldn't get any radio. However, my brother, who lives in another city, could get web access, and had a radio. So, he e-mailed me updates every few minutes. At one point he wrote that the towers had collapsed. We'd also found out that my father, who works in the Pentagon, was in fact not in his office that day. Here's the exchange of e-mail from all that: Brother: "also just heard one of the world trade towers completely collapsed." Me: ""Collapsed?" What does that mean. Christ I've got to get a radio. Now Mom says maybe he wasn't at Pentagon today. Our neighbor Tracy's father works on the upper floors of the WTC." [note: In fact Tracy's father was just visiting for a meeting for the day. He was on one of the first floows hit. Brother: "Yeah, collapsed, completely." Me: "From the CNN website it looks like both WTC towers are gone." Brother: "I just heard that. can't get in though. heck, i'm even trying freerepublic.com" Brother again: "hey, are you on the phone with lee? i'm trying to figure out if anyone has talked to her in the last 30-45 mins." Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 It started out as a normal tuesday morning. Me waking up late and rushing to work. Work for me starts daily at 5:30am. I had a strange feeling that something just wasn't right on this morning and I started getting scared thinking something was wrong with my Father. He lived in Michigan and a few years earlier had had triple bypass surgery. So everytime I get feelings like that, I think something is wrong with him. I was soon to realize nearly an hour and a half later why I had been feeling this way. Although very devastated at what I was to soon realize was happening to our Great Nation, very thankful that my Father was okay. At work, we listen to music on the radio and soon after our 2nd rotation, the music turned to News about a plane that had hit one of the Twin Towers in NYC. At first I was just in complete disbelief. I thought to myself, "How could this have happened? Why was there a plane flying so low? Didn't the pilot know better? OH MY GOD!" I was mesmerized on the radios all over our plant. Then we heard that the other Tower had also been hit by a second plane. Again I thought, "What in the hell is going on? Is this just an ironic accident?" Never had I thought that it would be terrorists attacking America and our people. The more my co-workers and I listened the more devestation we continued to hear. The pentagon was hit, then a plane had crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Then I thought, "What is going to happen next?" The more we listened the more we heard the media saying this was a terrorist attack. My work did not allow anyone to leave. I guess upper management felt that it wasn't neccessary. Although I felt it was. All I wanted to do was go and pick up my children and hold them forever and tell them how much I loved them. I was unsure if we were going to be attacked here. And all that I could think is if we were attacked and were going to die, I wanted us to die together, holding one another. I was a single 31 year old Mother with a 11 year old son, a 6 year old son and a 1 year old daughter. I didn't know what to believe until I returned home that evening to hear what President George W. Bush had to say in his address to the Nation at 5pm AZ time. Then everything was clear to me. I became so angry but all I could do was cry. I called a friend of mine whom I met when she came to AZ as a Church Missionary from Florida. She Baptized me and my oldest son. I knew that she was now an intern in Washington D.C. at or near the Pentagon and I was so afraid for her. I needed to know that she was okay. Thankfully when I called, she was safe at home in her apartment. I wanted to go to NYC to help. Then I thought, "Who am I? I am only one person, a single Mother with 3 children struggling to survive my daily life. Trying to raise my children the best I can." I felt so hopeless. Wanting still to help in anyway I could. As I was watching the news as I had been ever since 9/11, I saw on the T.V. screen a phone number to call for United Way for Donations of anything and everything. Money, blood, blankets, food, water, you name it, they needed it. So although I don't have much, I realized I had been spared and I had more than many others had because of that fateful day. I had my family. So I called that phone number and I donated a mere $25. I wanted so much to give more but I knew I could not afford it. I then called to make an appointment to give blood. The blood banks were so over crowded even here in AZ that to give blood, there was an approximate 2 week waiting list. Which was so touching. They asked for my name and phone number and they said they would call when they could make the appointment for me to give blood. They never called. It made me sad but it was also very comforting to know that we Americans could all pull together, Nation wide for our fellow Americans in need. I continued to watch CNN and everything I could for daily information. I didn't want to miss a thing. I was glued to the television everyday, every minute I was at home for approximately 2 months. I wouldn't go anywhere, not even to the Grocery store. Until I just could not take it anymore. I had to again find some kind of normalcy in this life. Not for me but for my children. I began to realize, yes, the most horrific attack on American soil had happened, but I am still living and my children still need their Mother. I lived everyday, scared to death that the bombs were going to come and land here at my home. I was afraid to go to work for fear that if it was to happen, my children would be scared and alone without me and possibly die woundering where their Mother was and why I wasn't there to help them. As time passed I started feeling more secure that the bombs were not going to come. Somehow time began to heal the wounds. Although the scars will forever be here, I have once again begun to live. I have a new found compassion for Life, Love and Liberty. And hearing the stories from the families who lost loved ones, the survivors and the many Heros of 9/11, I have finally in some way figured out what I want to do with my life. I want to help people, either by becoming a Fire Fighter, or by becoming a 911 dispatcher, or a nurse. Something of that nature. Now I just need to figure out which one I will be able to offer the most of myself for others. Although I did not personally loose a loved one on that fateful day, I still feel the pain and sorrow of loss, of a Nations innocence. I try not to take life for granted. I make sure to always tell my family and friends "I Love You." And now on this day, September 11, 2002, the 1 year Anniversary of this Sacred Day of terror, We Remember, Pray, and Honnor all those who perished, the injured, the Families, and the thousands of Heros of that very painful Day. And also the months that came after. The clean up of these tradgedies. I can't even imagine what it must have consisted of to get to the point of where we are now from where we were 1 year ago. I was just waking up to go to work at a restaurant, when my fiance came plundering through the door to turn the television on to CNN. We were shocked to see that the first tower of the WTC had been hit. As soon as we heard of this, my fiance had just remembered that he just dropped his 79 year old grandma that had been visiting for the past week at the airport. We were in a panic, I had to contact work to say that I could not come to work, so that we could go rescue his grandmother stuck at the airport. I the midst of getting ready to head out, our 9-year old cat Calico "Cali" was laying dead right in the path that only a few minutes before I had to dodge because she was walking around in front of me! We then saw that the second tower had been hit on television, and we just stood together in shock as to all that had just happened in the few minutes that he had just walked through the door. We were zombies as to the world coming to an end. We watched towers collapse and were just waiting for this to be the final minutes of the world. In my life time I have never ever seen anything like this and only wonder what kind of poeple are capable of taking another persons life without thinking about it or having no regrets. This was a life changing event for my because I viewed life in a different way and thought that we had no purpose as people; but after this I learned to love myself more as well as care more for other people than I do for myself and I think that we are here to help each other in our endeavors in life and that selfishness should not be a part of our vocabulry; but it does exist. I think that one of the only messages that I get from this is to love, protect, care for, embrace, uplift, and encourage each other to do good and strive to be all you can without forgetting of others. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at home (my parent's houseat that time) putting clothes away in my room. I had the local channel 8 news on watching the morning updates of traffic, weather and Michael Jordan returning to the game of Basketball. Urgently, the breaking news screen flashed and they began showing footage of 1 of the World Trade Center towers smoking. The reporters were asking each other if it was a bomb, then some eye witness reports began coming in of a plane crashing into the building. With the camera still focused on the tower, I watched in horror as a second plane made a sharp turn into the 2nd tower. I cried. I don't know anyone personally that worked there or could have worked there, but I still felt the overwhelming sense of sorrow, grief, helplessness and panic. I called my dad at his job and we sat on the phone, each watching different news channels telling each other the irradic reports flowing in. Then, in front of our eyes, on the phone together we watched the Pentagon come into view. Then we watched the 1st tower fall. In the mean time, I called my mother's place of work- the building had been evacuated. I tried to locate my fiancee' who had been at school in downtown Cleveland that morning. His cell phone had been off. Moments after the towers were both down, the mail lady came to the door asking for any news. I told her all I knew at the time. My mother pulled in the driveway, her building had a government office in it, but no one was told. I updated her as she walked in the house. I sat in front of the T.V. getting updates from every news channel I could. Varying reports, different information from every direction. Who did this, why, where there other attacks to come, how many where hurt, killed, missing. My fiancee' pulled in the driveway. Every building in downtown Cleveland had been evacuated and all cell phone lines jammed. On my out a few days later there were firefighters walking in stopped traffic filling boots for NYC firefighters. I always have money in my car's ashtray for emergencies and because I don't smoke. I emptied it. But I filled it back up for several days just so I could empty it into a boot, anywhere. My personal twist from most other people's- I was home that morning and not at school because I was getting ready to leave for Army basic training 11/1/01. I had signed up in June for the Army Reserves, long before any threat of attack. Now the moral dielma, should I still go? Maybe it was a selfish moment, I think we all had at least one that morning. I talked it over with my family. Most of everyone I know told me to just not go. November 1st I got on a plane to Fort Leonardwood, MO to try my part. The first time in the airport after the attacks. I was ready to do whatever I had to do. At one point during training the drill sergants sat down and we all talked about how many joined because of Sept. 11th, almost everyone's hands went up. We all got our chance to say how 9/11 effected us and our decision to join the military. I met people who where right there when the attacks happened. Unfortunately, I didn't make it through training. I was hurt and couldn't finish. Things were meant to be. When I came home I tried to get updated at much as I could and to my wonder, CNN was still running updated of vitims identified and still missing. I have a small collection of books about 9/11, including a collection of the front page from various newspapers around the world. The day the attacks occured I knew this day would be that historical day for my generation. Before mine had JFK's assasination, Pearl Harbor, Titanic and events as such. We've all seen them tell their stories on the History channel and PBS, we visit memorial sites, see exhibitions in museums. How will this history be captured, remembered, visited?
