Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just moved into my apartment after being homeless for three months with my husband and son. The morning of the 11th was the first day I could sleep late. My husband woke me up when the news of the first fire came across the television. I refused to wake. I kept saying ya a fire in a skyscraper so what. He said no wake up. He came into my room and turned on the television. Just as I woke and focused on the television. The second plan came in and hit tower two. I watched in horror as a building which I had visited many times as a kid with my grandparents, my parents and school burn. As much as I stared in horror I still believed everything would be okay. I cried for almost a week straight. I still cry when the image comes across the news. I paused every once in a while with a tear falling down my cheek crying for those who were lost and the scars left in our country. It took me four days to contact all my friends and family. Everytime I couldn't reach one I panicked. My little brother was the last to be found. Still unble to contact him my friend drove to his house with her 2 kids and knocked on his door. My family and friends were safe. I scanned the list everytime a new one came out to find out if someone I knew from school or home had perished. No one close to me perished. Only one name I knew was on the list: Paul John Gill -- He was several years ahead of me at MArtin Luther HS but he was a name I KNEW. He was one of NY Fireman that perished. I thoght to myself this must be an accident bot as I watched and saw the second plane hit I knew it was no accident. And I felt a sorrow come over me. I couldnt belive it was true.I thought of the people on the planes and in the buldings and felt pain and prayed for their families.Still not knowing what was about to happen,saw tower one come down,and said god why?Then a few minutes later tower two came down,and I wept thinking of the people who had died praying for their families praying that people would make it out of there. But I knew many didnt.People who where mothers fathers sisters and brothers husbands,wives,grandmothers,grandfathers,and friends,sons,and doughters,did not deserve to be taken away.But for a moment I felt a peace come over me and I knew they where in gods hands,and the cowerds where at gods mercy and they whould get what thy deserve.I didnt go to work that I just wanted to be with my family because I knew then they could be taken away in a moment.But I still had my family and many people where robbed of their loved ones by sick evil cowerds.So to the families of the victoms I prayed for god to lift your hearts,and I still pray for you so please put your faith in god and the a Lord Jesus Christ,and we will all be home with theim one day,and for those who were not victoms hold your loved ones near because they can be taken from you at any time. Tell us your story: I was waking up to attend school on September 11th to my mom telling me that "a plane hit the trade towers" I will never forget the fear and urgency in her voice. I turned on CNN just in time to see the 2nd plane hit and then I knew it was no accident. I remember driving to school and seeing several planes that were directed to land in Chicago. Never have I seen so many planes flying to the same destination at the same time ln my life. Even though I was not in New York during that time and not seeing the actual events, that is an image that still haunts me. There is a difference between seeing events on televison, and seeing them face to face..in some small way, that was my image of September 11th and my realization that it was real. When I reached my university, there were alot of parking spots open, I assumed that several students did not show up due to the events that occured that morning, I then turned around and went back home. That night, I went with a friend of mine to donate blood at a local organization. I remember sitting there with several people (the line of donors was amazing) and everyone in silence to hear the President address the nation. For many nights after that, I can recall being woken up in the middle of the night to hear loud fighter jets above my home, probably due to the increased defense. I will never forget that day, four years later I can still recall the events more clearly than I could a day that occured a week ago. I never had a complete grasp on what September 11th really was about until I started a job in a large office building a few weeks ago. To imagine all of the souls that occupied that building is something I could not phathom until I worked in that type of environment. I remember crying when I saw the individuals pleading on television to find there loved ones and attending memorial services and candlelight vigils. Tell us your story: I go to a boarding school and I never really watch t.v during the day I?m usually out with my friends but on September 11th I had an argument with one of my friends and was in a strop so I went to the kitchen in my block and turned on t.v....... as I was flicking through the channels I turned cnn on watched as images were displayed...... it took me about 10 minutes to actually register in my head what had happened I saw pictures of planes crashing and buildings crumbling to the ground and dust every where and the image that even today the sticks in my mind is that of all the dead bodies lying on the ground...... I couldn't understand what could make anybody want to do such a thing....... to kill so many innocent people..... I called my parents and my dad kind of explained to me what had happened and why it happened..... then all of a sudden a man called Bin Laden was the most wanted man in the world because he was responsible for these attacks...... I went to school the next day and was surprised at the reaction that I got from my friends...... I live in a Muslim country and many of my close friends are Muslim and one when I told her how I was feeling to all that had happened she said `do you know how many Muslims get killed everyday by American troops? those people on those planes got what they deserved' then they started telling me how all the Americans torture them and what they did the families..... I just got up and walked away and all I could say was `but was it bad enough to kill all those innocent people??..... Tell us your story: During the morning of 9/11 my husband and I were sleeping in our bedroom in our apartment.----The telephone rang at about 6:30 a.m. and it was my mother saying to turn on the television right away. The remote was by my side and I turned on the television to see the first hit WTC in smoke. Then Tom Brokaw anounced there were other plans missing out of radar and I saw the next building hit. This was horrifying. The whole thing was horrifying.----------I have been to the Towers very often in my life and worked on Wall Street and know the area very well.(I grew up on Long Island)------------------Looking at the updates on the local news everyone in Northern California where my husband and I were living was to "shelter in place"----------a brother of my high school freind, Lenore Bonomo, was a Fireman did not make it out alive.-----------I knew of some people in the Financial Industry who also "passed on".-----------------------A church was on the corner of the block we lresided on at the time and everyone "poured" in to the church including me. Tell us your story: First of all I have to say that I am still in shock and have a sense of disbelief that the attacks on September 11, 2001 happened. I spent time during my college days at Rutgers in New Brunswick, NJ in the shadow of the Twin Towers. I rode the escalator in the hotel dwarfed by them. I've cried while standing in the square at night, looking up until I couldn't see anything, imagining buildings so immense that at the tops, they must touch a piece of heaven...The idea that they fell is so incredible. The idea that so many lives were lost is unimaginable. I work for our local community college and our division was having its monthly staff meeting. Someone mentioned that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers; we were dumbfounded, thinking like many others across the nation and the world I am sure, that a pilot had suffered a heart attack, that there was no way someone could "accidentally" fly into such an imposing structure. Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined what had actually happened. By the time the meeting was finished, the second plane had struck; I tried to get online and had a difficult time. Two co-workers turned on radios, each to a different station, to try and get a sense of what was happening, since we really didn't know the truth. I called my boyfriend and they had a small television tuned in: two planes at the Towers, one at the Pentagon, and one in Pennsylvania. And all on purpose. The college went on alert, as did our county; some offices closed and some classes were cancelled as people wanted to be with their families, watching the tragedy play out on television. We prayed as volunteer EMT workers from our area headed up the New Jersey Turnpike, wondering what horrors they would find, feeling a sense of fear coupled with pride as we went with them in spirit. I finally got into a news website with streaming content, and as I heard the information, I sat in my office and cried. Cried for the senseless loss of life, cried for the hijackers--death in the name of their god, cried for the friends I couldn't reach by phone or email who worked near the Towers, cried for the country. I went home and watched one of the major news channels and cried. I stayed up most of the night, watching and crying. Helpless. I still feel helpless, even though I have heard so many stories of God's intervention that day; one of my dearest friends who works a few blocks from the Towers did not go to work that day because she wasn't feeling well. Her train would have been passing under the first Tower at the time the plane hit it. I know through my Christian belief that God is in everything, and I know that those who lost their lives did not go in vain; we have all heard about the priest who died giving last rites, the firefighters who went up to save others knowing they wouldn't come out, the people who stayed with those who could not leave. But what have we learned? We learned that the United States, the so-called super power of the western world, is not the impenetrable fortress many felt that it was. We learned that in our "darkest hour", we have friends of all colors, faiths, and beliefs--friends who we (the collective country of America) considered foes. We learned what a portion of the world, too long snubbed and ignored, truly thought/thinks of us. We learned that the United States is a troubled land, as our Arab and Muslim neighbors--the people we greet when we pull into our driveways, the parents of the children who carpool with us, the folks we speak to each day by name at our local diner or gas station or nail salon--were being beaten and threatened. Tell us your story: Thu Nguyen History 103 Extra Credit May 7, 2002 911 From My Point of View On the morning of September 11, 2001, I woke up at around 9:45am from my TV set's alarm. The channel was on CNN and it seemed to me like there was smoke coming from a very tall building. I wasn't quite sure which building or where this building was situated and I wasn't even sure if the footage was from a movie or real life? I sat there upon my bed and watched for 5 minutes or so until I heard a reporter say that one of the World Trade Center Towers was on fire. At the time, I did not know what caused the fire. Because I had class that morning I had to get ready and prepare for class. As I was walking to my first class, a man hollored to me "Hey, did you catch the news this morning?" I asked "Ummmm...Do you mean, The World Trade Center?" He then said "Yes....We've been attacked!". When I heard him say that I was surprised, and I was feeling concerned for the people inside the building. In my mind, I was asking myself "Who could have done this to us?". I then asked the man, "Do you know who is attacking us?" He then says, "I don't know? It could be anyone but I have a feeling that it may be someone who's been a threat to us for a long time." The man I was speaking to then told me he had a friend who works there and he's not sure if they are okay or not. I then told him, "I hope that everyone will be okay and that help will arrive soon". Finally before I went into class, I wished the man good luck and hoped that everything would be okay. Upon entering class, I realized something different about it. My class seemed empty with only half of the students showing up. While a few people walked out during the lecture, I decided to stay and listen to the whole lecture. Nobody was in the mood to learn that day including myself but as we all know, 'the show must go on'. After class was out I went to the commons at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. In there, everyone was gathered around watching, patiently and intently at CNN News. No person was speaking and everybody watched with interest and concern. It was the first time I've ever seen the whole school gathered around the television like that. Normally, there would only be a handful of people there during the week, but on September 11, it was a whole new atmosphere as throngs of people gathered around to witness the event. After leaving J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, I immediately had another class at 1:45pm at a different campus, VCU. Before I walked into class, I saw a note on the door saying "Class will be cancelled today. We will continue class on Thursday". Soon after that, I went back to my car and started driving home. As I was listening to the radio, almost every station was focused on the situation and constantly reporting facility closings including airports, amusement parks, shopping malls, schools, and any place where you can find masses of people especially tourist attractions like Disneyland, the Sears Towers and Seattle's Space Needle. At this point, I realized the situation had become more serious than I thought. I never thought that the incident that occurred hundreds of miles away would affect my local town or other parts of the nation like this? At home, the mood was the same as at school in that my family was glued to the television set. My family couldn't believe it was really happening. For eight hours we were watching intently as we saw the collapse of both towers, the scattering of civilians, the firefighters and policeman helping and directing traffic, the interviews with witnesses, and finally the constant updates from the news reporters. I was sitting there in disbelief not knowing what to do. I had an exam to study for, but was in no mood to do anything at all. I was concerned about the turnout of events, for example, the number of fatalities and whether or not we will be safe in our homes. Watching the news made me think hard about my life. I thought to myself: "If we are in a war, will I be chosen to fight?" I saw what was happening on television and when I saw those two aircrafts hit the Twin Towers, I knew this was not an accident. Also when I heard that another aircraft hit the Pentagon and yet, another one crashing in Pennsylvania, I was even more convinced that this was not an accident but a heinous act of vandalists. I was so worried about what was going to happen next. The suspense and drama kept me on my feet and kept me up all night. When the local news appeared, I got to see the reaction from people living in my area. I was so touched by the amount of support and care taken by the people living near me. I saw local residents (of different nationalities, religions, and ages) heading to the churches, holding candles, praying, and spending their time to support our beloved country. It was the first time I've ever seen my community get together like this. I was so proud to be living in such a caring and loving place. People were helping and supporting each other through their kind acts, their consoling words, and their time. A few days after 911, I was even more inspired when musicians and actors came together to help support the victims. On MTV, I got to see artists including Bono, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Jermaine Dupris, and many others trying to make a difference by recording a song together called "What's Going On? In Hollywood, I saw actors giving donations and expressing their remorse for the situation. The same love and support that I saw in my local town had been spread across the whole nation. It was an incredible event and it was great to see people putting their differences aside and coming together as a whole unit. September 11 is probably one of the most terrible tragedies I've ever witnessed in the United States. I never thought that a war could ever occur in the United States. It took me a while to adjust to it because I'm so used to seeing wars fought on other battlegrounds overseas. Now, I know that anything is possible. As a result of 911, I now realize the strength and power of our nation. Our nation is filled with so many great ideas from people of all ages, races, and religions. It's a place where people can express thoughts freely and create opportunities. Best of all, the United States is a nation that cares for people during tragedies and times of need. After 911, I can now truly say that I'm very happy to be waving the American flag and being apart of the United States. There's no other place like it in the world, and I'm very honored to call it my home. I fell back asleep while watching it, and when I woke back up, I saw the second plane hit the tower, and I wondered what "movie" I was watching. THen I found out it wasn't a movie, and I just sat up in bed for the next 2 hours with my mouth hanging open. It was unreal! I then got a call from my mom. About 5 minutes after the second plane hit, my Grandmother who had cancer, passed away peacefully in her sleep. I was jealous of her for awhile, because she never knew of the horror, and I wish I never knew of it either. Yet the amount of pride I have now for my country is totally unbelievable. Proud to be an american has a whole new meaning now. Now, a year later, I have started clinicals for nursing school. We have to be trained for a terriost attack as well as a bioterism attack, which is really sad, that the world has come to this. But in another way I'm so glad to have my life and my family. When I babysat my neighbors two boys, I asked them what they wanted to be when they grew up. both of them answered a fireman so they could be brave like those who were in New York. Tell us your story: I am a nurse and I was at work when my husband who is a police officer had called to tell me that a plane had hit the first tower. We, of course, felt immediate concern for those involved and remembered thinking what could have gone wrong for a plane of that size to be flying that low and hit the tower. Then it wasn't very long before he called again and said another tower was hit. I remember thinking, this is no accident. Then as the rest of the events unfolded that day, it was so overwhelming. I remember thinking that I just wanted to do something to help and to show that America was bigger than this. It was unbelievable to see how americans united and rallied to the cause. It seemed that every home, business, and vehicle had some type of patriotic symbol. Some were flags, wreaths, ribbons, bumper stickers and some were a very obvious mixture of all of these. It was evident that even those who couldn't be at the sites of the towers, Washington or Pennsylvania , wanted to do something to offer support. I also remember trying to explain these events to my 7 year old son, and trying to re-assure him. I also remember feeling a renewed love for my country and for the men and women who have given themselves in life and death for our freedom. I saw a fire of patriotism burn in the hearts of a youth that had never experienced true casualties of war, my generation. Generation X was called to wake-up, stand-up and love our country. Now one year later, I pray that our generation never forgets what that fire feels like. And through it all, I know God is in control and that He loves us. He was the one steadfast thing through everything. The only source of comfort in this time was my faith in Jesus Christ and the knowledge that he loves and cares for me. GOD BLESS AMERICA. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of 9-11-2001, I woke up and went through my usual routine and came downstairs for breakfast. As I came down, my parents were watching the news and they were just in awe of what was happening. However, I was completely clueless, so they filled me in. Not believing them, I went to watch the news and couldn't believe my eyes. What I was witnessing was not real, it couldn't have been! I continued on with my day and went to school. When I arrived in my english class, all the students were questioning about the attacks so my teacher decided to discuss the event for the whole period. Unfortunately, none of my other classes paid much attention to the trauma and the day went on as if nothing had ever happened, as if history hadn't changed. However, deep down inside, I knew life would never be the same after this event. Around 2:30 PM, I arrived home to discover that parents were still watching the news. I asked them if there were any other updates about the tragedy, and they responded by saying that nothing new had happened but the fact that so many lives were changed and so many lives were lost. I don't think that I've ever witnessed history in my entire 15 years until the September 11 attacks. I'm extremely lucky that I didn't have to go through all the pain that that event had caused but I know that I will be changed by this historic event in our country's history. I am a nurse and was working the night shiftt from 7 pm 9/10 to 7 am 9/11. I was in my patients room doing a last minute check before giving report to the oncoming shift. My patient had her television on and was watching a special news broadcast. What I witnessed on the television screen reminded my of a Hollywood horror movie, which at the time I thought it was. Good Morning America is always showing and giving us the cutting edge in news and events. I thought this was a clip from an upcoming movie. I was stunned and shocked to learn that this was really happening!!!! After working 12 hours I was ready to go home and sleep to prepare for the coming shift that night. Sleep eluded me as I watched the two towers one by one crumble and fall. And then boom!!!!!!! Another tragedy hits as the Pentagon is hit and torn apart. Soon there were scenes from a quiet and beautiful Pensylvania countryside where yet another plane had crashed. I was later to learn of the bravery and sacrifice of the Americans on board that flight, in deterring it from killing 100's maybe thousands more. So many owe their very lives to the bravery and quick thinking Americans who sacrificed thieir lives that tragic day in Pensylvania. PLEASE, let us never forget the lives lost that day, just one year ago that brought America to her knees in prayer for the victims and their families. The day that united our hearts and strengthened our resolve to NEVER NEVER NEVER give in to the horrors of terrorism, but instead stay united in our firm conviction that we would not tolerate these acts to go unpunished, thus shattering the great American dream of freedom and justice for all within her borders. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It began as an absolutely normal Tuesday morning at Barker Central School, located in western New York on September 11, 2002. The sky was blue and all of the students were still forcing their eyes open from waking up so early in the morning. Coincidentally, the topic for the day, in second period Global Studies, was the Taliban government. While in the middle of class at about 9:00 a.m. the neighboring teacher interrupted the class to talk to our teacher, Mrs. Capen, for what we thought would be a brief moment. My friends and I started talking amongst ourselves, thinking she would be a minute or two. Then Mrs. Capen turned on the television, located in our classroom, to a news channel. Still talking to my friends, I thought this was just part of the lesson. Then it hit me, but every so slowly. A plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center buildings in New York City. I knew what was going on, but I just didn't believe it was happening, because it was so unexpected. The scene shown on the television was exactly like a Hollywood movie, only it wasn't. By now all of the students including the teachers were astonished and frozen, unable to speak. Every word coming from the reporter's mouth was so seriously taken, because no one had ever experienced anything near this degree. By 9:03 a.m. a second plane had crashed into the other still unschathed trade building. It was an absolute disaster. The bell rang and the students filled the hallways leaving their classes with little knowledge of the current events as well as confusion and worry, which followed them to their next period. Gym was next on my agenda and we were playing football. All other classes had their televisions on and canceled all plans for the day. After playing some football, we all came back in and changed into our school clothes. We watched another five minutes of the news and discovered that the Pentagon had been hit by another plane at approximately 9:30 a.m. On my way to the next class, I was thinking about what was going to be hit next. In Art, Mr. Stephens had the television on just like all the other teachers, and he was updating us on recent news as best as he could. I can still remember the constant pouring of dust out the top of the trade buildings. By now my classmates were telling me all sorts of facts about what happened, because they didn't miss a whole half hour of the news as I did while in gym class. Around 10:29 a.m. the end of the period was creeping up and all of a sudden the last World Trade Center building gave way! It came down so slowly, ripping through the air and bringing every last steel beam down with it. The cloud of dust was absolutely enormous. It was like a bomb had been dropped right on the two towers. The news showed people all bloodied-up and coughing as if they were dying. I went home that day not knowing if either of my parents had heard the news yet. My mother wasn't home yet and my father was on the lawnmower. I ran to my dad to ask him if he had heard about or watched any of the news. He said he didn't. He couldn't believe it either. My mom came home in about a half an hour and ran into the house and turned on the news; she was painstankenly aware of the tragedy that had occured that morning. We all watched the news that night and went to bed glad that we were all safe and sound, but with thoughts of people who's mothers and fathers had not come home that night. I got to school and my first class was band. I went into the drum room and the lights were out and the percussionists were watching the television, and I figured it wasn't anything important so I took my drum and started practicing. The Drumline told me to stop, and I kept wondering why, when finally they explained to me that the Twin Towers were just hit by a plane. At first I was pretty apathetic about the whole thing thinking it was no big deal, it happens. Finally when I realized the reality of the situation I felt terrible about the way I acted. I was driving to work that morning and listening to the radio when I had heard a second plane had just hit the other tower. I was just seconds away from a view on the Nortern State parkway where the Ny skyline is visable if you are traveling west just before the LIE exit. I could not see the towers just smoke and reaized this was no small plane, The towers were burning and people were dieing and I was watching even at this big distance.As i drove to my work destination I was very concerned not Knowing what this was all about. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am currently a Vice President for an Information Technology consulting firm in NYC. I was formerly a NYC Paramedic. On 9/11, after the second plane hit the South Tower, local radio stations were announcing, "...off duty fire, police, paramedics and nurses should respond downtown." As a Paramedic, I had been involved in the disaster drills at the WTC. I knew the protocols and procedures. I wanted to help. I needed to help. My wife called. She asked me if I was going downtown. I said I wasn't sure. But, we both knew the real answer. I left my office and headed for the subways. At Grand Central Station, the trains were held and stopped. Unknown to us at that time, the South Tower had collapsed. I told an NYPD officer that I was an off-duty Paramedic and had to get downtown. He brought me over to a Sergeant, who had an off-duty fireman with him. Officers from the NYPD Transit division drove us downtown. As we went past Union Square, we saw people walking slowly, almost in a daze. As we proceeded further down Broadway, people were more anxious, and running North. The officers turned right on Vesey Street and left us off at Vesey St. near Church Street. The fireman and I got out and we saw police and fireman at a North Tower entrance, waving to us to join them. The fireman and I started to run over, but then we started to be pelted by rocks and debris. The North Tower was starting to collapse. The fireman with me (I never did get his name), grabbed me by the collar, pulled me and yelled, "RUN!? I'm no athlete (not by any stretch...) but we ran back to Broadway. We started to run north on Broadway (near Fulton St.). We heard this roar and there was this dark gray cloud covering Broadway. It looked like a pyroclastic cloud from a volcano. I ducked in front of an ambulance that had been parked on Broadway. The cloud swallowed everything in its path. Everything went dark. It was hard to see and breathe. I heard glass breaking and car alarms going off. Afterwards, there was silence. Just like the morning after a snowstorm. Everything was monochromatic.... gray. People, cars, buildings, everything. I teamed up with other EMS staff and we headed back to "Ground Zero". The dust was thick around my feet and swirled in the air. The only color was occasional patches of red and pink. We started to treat people. The injuries ran the full range from "boo-boos" to severe head injuries. We passed the minor injuries to other people to be transported to local hospitals. We triaged the serious and critical injuries. I pronounced 16 people dead. I saw a foot sticking out of debris; I ran over and started to remove the debris, hoping for someone still alive. It was just a foot still in its shoe. It had been torn just above the ankle. I carried it with me, looking for someone to give it to... The air had the smell of burning flesh. Trust me, once you smell it, you never forget it. People around me commented, "what is THAT smell?" Two people vomited when I told them. We had heard that between 80-100 people had jumped to their death prior to the towers collapsing. Absolutely amazing... We were moved back up Broadway near Canal Street. There we treated more "walking wounded". Cell phones were out of service and some pay phones had long lines waiting to use them. I walked into a women's clothing store and asked to use the phone. The owner was very gracious and said I could. I called my office, told them I was fine and asked for them to call my wife and tell her I was OK. The remainder of the day, we were moved from one area to another, but there was no one left to treat. We had been moved to West Broadway, near Canal Street. Ambulances were lined up, as were Police and Fire. Sirens were in the air and the crowd parted to let a police car and a blue Jaguar enter. The Jaguar parked and out stepped a tall dark haired physician in a white lab coat. He walked over to our group, which consisted of EMT's and Fire officials. The doctor said he was a trauma surgeon and need to go down "there" to amputate a woman's leg that was trapped. He looked at me dressed as I was in a tie and dress slacks. He asked if I was a doctor. I said no, a Paramedic. He said, "Good, come with me". An ambulance drove us down as far as they could. We had to walk the last 3 blocks and firemen escorted us to the women. She was trapped by the Customs House on Vesey Street, which was now covered by the North Tower. 7 WTC was behind us and the front of the building had been ripped open and was on fire. The woman was trapped under an overhang of debris. The firemen looked nervous. They kept saying, "Make it fast guys, it's not safe here". No kidding. The debris was piled 40 or 50 feet high and ran from West St to Broadway. You heard the creaking of the steel and concrete debris. The woman was in her late 40's. She was covered with dust and dirt. Her left leg below the knee was buried under debris. I think she was Hispanic. She wasn't conscious, but would occasionally scream, cry and then pass out. I took vitals and started the IV. The doctor prepared for the amputation. The doctor injected a sedative into the IV line and started to amputate her leg. I heard a couple of "Oh Shits!" from the firemen behind us. Between the creaking of the debris and the heat from the 7 WTC fire, it was surreal, yet I was scared. Real scared. After the leg was amputated we bandaged the stump. The firemen carried her back to the ambulance and one fireman helped the doctor. I never knew her name, nor did I find out what became of her. I then got a lift to my final destination...Stuyvesant High School. It had become a command post. There was law enforcement officers from every city/state and federal agency...armed to the teeth. Rumors were running rampant. The White House had been hit, the Supreme Court was hit, and Air Force One was shot down in mid-air. No one knew for sure. We were all concerned, down right scared at times, but I saw a raw determination from these people (men and women), a brewing anger that was ready to explode. There was a poor School Safety Officer sitting at the reception desk at the school and a number of NYPD asked if juice drinks and food could be brought from the cafeteria to feed the people there. The School Safety Officer said he didn't have the key. Two big (real big) NYPD Emergency Service Police Officers, said, "don't worry about it". They came back 10 minutes later with loaves of bread, bologna, cans of juice and a large bolt cutter... By 4pm, the "cavalry" had arrived from across the tri-state area, yet again; there was no one to treat. I walked up West Broadway to Canal Street and I saw a van with NYPD officers in it. They were kind enough to give me a lift to 8th avenue and 14th street. I took the subway to Penn Station and grabbed the first train home. I was so covered in dust, dirt and blood, no one on the packed train wanted to sit near me. I walked into my house and my kids hugged me, my wife hugged me and then started to hit me on my chest. She cried. I cried. It took 3 showers before I felt clean again. Like the rest of the world, I then watched on TV what had occurred. On the one year anniversary , I still think about it. I see it when I close my eyes. I taste it in my mouth. I'll never forget that day. I lost a special friend. Jeff was a kind , brillant man. He had several college degrees but the one that meant the most was from Wheaton College (Ministry). He was president of one company (E-Logic) and Vice-President of another (Cahners). His main goal in life was to be worthy of the Grace of God. Jeff taught Bible study and counciled young people. He took away my fears when I had cancer surgery. This man(Age 43) was a wonderful husband, father, son , brother, and friend. It was a privilage to be in the same room as him. What a loss! God Bless! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in my 8:00am class at York College of Pennsylvania on Sept. 11th 2001 when the planes hit the towers. When I first heard a plane hit the towers, I thought it was a smaller single engine plane, I didnt even think of a passenger plane. Then another plane hit the south tower, and I realized what was going on. It seemed never ending, planes where going down, it hit closer to home when the plane crashed in PA, a couple hours from where I go to school. All day I think everyone at the campus was in shock of what had just taken place. I could not call anyone to see if they were okay, it was a real problem. Honestly it had been a long time since I had cried, but I just could help feeling sorry for the families of the victimes, I couldn't help but cry. It was a mixture of many emotions, anger, sadness, alone, which I'm sure all Americans felt. It was truly a sad day in history, but if anything good could have come it was the support of cities and communities who came together to help heal. I pray to God nothing like this ever happens again in my life or the lives of my unborn children.
