Tell us your story: I had just logged onto my computer on AOL in my home office and had decided to go into the AOL chat room, something I hadn't done before. A newsflash pop onto the screen saying the World Trade Building had been hit by an airplane. At first I thought it was something just to catch your attention to click onto a site...but when the people in the chat room began talking about it, I immediately got up and went to my bedroom and turned on the tv where I saw the smoldering tower and thought what a terrible accident. Within another minute or so, I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I knew then it wasn't an accident and New York was under attack. How terrible. I thought about the people who were obviously immediately killed on the planes and in the buildings and those trapped in the upper floors. I thought of the movie of the fire in the highstory building "Towering Inferno" I think that is what it was called. It wasn't long before I do believe I heard speculations about the heat and the durability of the buildings. The news cameras were picking up all the smoke and degree and panic when people started jumping out the windows. I was so sad and shocked as I watched the news. Then it happened. The first tower collapsed. Oh my God!! was all I could say. All those people trapped and shortly after the second tower collapsed. I never thought in all my days living that I would be witness to such a tragedy. Such a lost of life of Americans of all races and professions. The police, fireman and people off the street who ran in the buildings to help other were lost. Innocent people...men, women and children. These people were common people...workers. People who had risen from their beds to go to work to make a living never to see another day or their families. I was worser than the Pearl Harbour attack which was army against army...but to kill people...thousands of innocent people who haven't raised a hand against anyone is so cruel. I realized then what true evil is and true cowardness is. This is my second unhumane tragedy that I have witness in my lifetime. The Oklahoma bombing was the first and now the New York Trade Towers. The earthquake of Mexico City was a natural tragedy and so were the hurricanes that hit the eastern shores of US and the midwest floods which claimed so many lifes. The mudslides of Central America was also nature tragedies but none compare to the terrible and evil acts of man. I guess when you look back through history and you witness the terrible things that have happened...we have to look at ourselves. Was there justification in dropping the first nucleur bomb on Japan to end a war? Thousand of innocent people were killed then. The slaughter of Indians...men, women and children in this country. War is the most evil act of man. There are no lines or limitation to the cruelties of war. The fight is over territorial possessions of land, oil, gems and whoever gets in the way become statistics. We as a human race need to look at ourselves, help each other, create alternatives. No oil... turn water and electricity to power our vehicles. No one in the world should go hungry, this country alone can feed the world. Evil people cause evil things to happen. Leaders who are evil and won't let food into their countries to wipe out a race of people is evil. The United States is overall a great country with a great way of life and we are a creative people that can come up with new solutions to the problems of this world...but we are not immuned to evil. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I took my youngest daughter to her elementary school that morning to an annual event called "Meet You at the Pole". It's a time when those who wish can go to the front of the school and pray and say the pledge to the flag before school starts. The gathering started at 7:30 central time, 8:30 eastern. There were probably about 100 people in attendence, which is a tremendous turn out concidering we are such a small community. Later in the day alot of us parents began to realize that our children, school leaders and ourselves we at the pole when the first plane hit the World Trade center. It was awsome to realize that we were parying for our country and its leaders at that particular time. It makes me very proud. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up, like any normal day and went to my History 101 class at Northern Virginia Community College. After class, I went out to have a smoke with some friends, when someone told me that her friend called her and told her that a plane crashed into one of the WTC buildings. We didn't know if he was pulling her leg or not, so I went about my business, which led me to the Starbucks I usually went to before my next class at 11. I called my mother (who works for a large ISP) to see if it really happened, and she confirmed it. She told me it was extremely busy and she had to go. It turns out that one of the girls who worked at Starbucks had a boyfriend who worked at the Pentagon. We didn't have a television, but people were getting phone calls here and there with updates. I still couldn't believe what had happened. By 10:45 a.m., I had to go to class. Everyone was nervous, and the teacher was still trying to teach the class. We kept hearing sirens outside and wondering what was happening. People were looking at the windows every time a plane passed by. As we walked out of class at 12:15, there was a sign saying that the school was closed as of 12:00. I was due in at work (at the same ISP as my mother), so I tried to call to find out what was going on, and no one answered. So, I called my mother again and she told me everyone went home and for me to go home. I spent the next three days glued to my television and computer, my insides turning inside-out, trying to rationalize what happened. I tried to keep in touch with all of my friends, and it was easiest to stay online to do so. The following Friday, I went into DC to my Archdruid's apartment in Dupont Circle. Some the members of our Order met us there and we held a prayer vigil that evening with candles, in plain view of the Washington Monument. It was at the same time millions of people throughout the world were doing the same thing. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had the day off from work, so I got up late that day and got in the shower. As I came out of the bathroom, my wife called me from work to tell me a plane had hit the Twin Towers. I had thought it was only a small private plane, so I got a cup of coffee in my NYC skyline mug I purchased when I was in the city last and turned the TV on. I tuned in just in time to see the second plane slam into the tower. All I could do for what seemed like 30 min. was stand there and watch. I grew up in Lincoln Park, NJ, which is a suburb of NYC, and as a child watched all my friend's parents walk past my house to the train station in business suits and sneakers, carrying their dress shoes and breif cases, to catch the train to the city. I moved to michigan in my teens with my family, and met my wife here, but I always thought of NY/NJ as my home. After the shock of what was going on passed some, it dawned on me that many of my friends and relatives work and live in lower Manhattan. I first called my wife back, and pleaded with her to stay in her office all day, then come straight home, thinking that WW3 had just begun, then I called my mom, who lives near me in MI, to see if she has heard from anyone, which she hadn't. I then began to try calling everyone in NY, and my family in florida to see if anyone had heard anything, all the while watching TV. I remember speaking to my mom on the phone while standing outside, around noon or so. The aircraft all around America were supposed to be grounded by that point, and to my horror, I looked up and saw a large jet at a very high altitude flying south from Canada. I panicked!! Finally, while it was still in my sight, it turned back north and proceeded back towards Canada. The rest of that day and the next few where like a blur. The people of Michigan were understandably upset and shocked, but not nearly as much as I was, which left me felling sort of isolated. I work in The hospital in Lansing, and fortunatly for me, a nurse from the Bronx had started on my unit a few months before, so I had someone who understood and could grieve with. About a week after, we both found we had lost no family members, but many friends between us. I had an aunt who was in the subway station when the first tower was hit. She exited safely, and as a jaded New Yorker, shrugged her shoulders and headed towards the battery, where she went back to NJ. Her son-in-law was on the 20th floor of the north tower preparing for a meeting when the attacks came. He also got out safely and walked to his wife's office in mid-town. To this day, I am still drawn to all things about 9-11, and hope that somehow we will capture and punish the people responsible for this. My wife and I were going to visit NY/NJ around the time of the attacks, to show her where I am from and dispell her ideas of what a big city is like, but I haven't been able to go yet. I was watching TV while talking to her but didn't really know what was happening until later when I arrived at work. Then while I was putting on the news the report came in about the other WTC plane hitting and the report that thde pentagon had also been hit. Tell us your story: It was early morning on September 11, 2001 I was in my first period class at Tuskawilla Middle School we turned the tv on to see the morning announcements and all of a sudden we saw on CNN that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by an airplane and that it was not confirmed what type of plane hit or what actually happened. The bell ring for the next period and I was in American History we told our teacher what happened and he was struck with awe he didnt know what to do or say. Then we turned the tv on and saw that another plane had struck the other tower. My classmates and I all knew that this was no accident and that someone deliberately flew those planes into those towers. All of us were freaked out and then the power went out in our school, then we were all totally scared. We didnt know what to expect we thought that there was going to be an attack on our school everyone was scared for their lives. Soon after that we learned that the Pentagon was hit which was another shock. Our American History teacher said that his sister was somewhere in Washington, D.C. and so he was very worried. After that class my step dad came and picked me up so I didnt have to be at school any longer, we then watched tv all day and got updated information on fox news. It was so odd watching all this I thought that it was all just a dream and it wasnt real. That I was maybe just dreaming this all up and I should wake up sometime sooner or later. It was something that was so odd and strange that I had a feeling of that everything around was an illusion. From then on I've been very cautious on what I see and do. I havent been on an airplane since September 11th. I dont have a fear of flying or anything. But I know if someone hijacked a plane that I was on I would go after that hijacker with everything I have. As I see it you got nothing to lose in a hijacked plane. Your going to die either way, so why not die being a hero than rather die being a coward. This is my point of view and I'm sure many people would agree with it. Victims and families of the victims of September 11th have not left my thoughts since that day, I have deep sympathy for them and for the people of each country that those terrorists harbour in, because we all know that President Bush will see that they are not living while he is in office. I was in the training class for force protection against terrorism. Then one of the office personal rushed in and yelled that a plane just hit the first tower. Then I watched the second plane hit. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just moved to Florida about two weeks prior to the attacks to do the College Program with Walt Disney World. I still was a little hesitant about being away from home (which is in Wisconsin) and to awake to the terrorist attacks on the U.S. just made that feeling worse. My roomate and I were sleeping when her boyfriend called to tell us the news. We immediately turned on the TV and just sat there and stared as the second plane had hit the towers. Then it was the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania field. It just didn't seem like it was going to stop and it didn't. We got several phone calls from our bosses and other Disney personnel that Walt Disney World was going to close the parks. We were astounded because this was the second time in history that Disney shut down. We weren't sure what the cause of this was, but there were several rumors about Walt Disney being on the hit list. We were scared. I was scared. I had family in New York that worked right by the towers. I called home to tell them I was okay and to see if they had heard anything from my cousin. Not a word and I just started to imagine the worse. By this time the towers had fell and more and more tears came running down my cheeks. I was numb, but knew that since I worked in one of Disney's resorts I would have to go to work and deal with the thousand of people and their questions. What would I say to them? How do I help them cope and keep them busy so they aren't thinking about the US being under attack? It was a difficult time at work, but we all made it through. We turned to complete strangers to look for comfort and to have our who,what, why questions answered. However, those questions couldn't be answered. Tell us your story: It was 8:00 A.M and instead of parking my car at the office to get into a car with my then fiance to start our journey into the city, we were just leaving the house. See our intention was be in the city at 9:00 AM so that we could be at city hall as it opened to get our marriage license for our wedding on Sept 29th. Something kept us in bed that morning about 1/2 hour longer than we wanted. Tired? Lazy? Whatever it was, it was the difference. As we pulled near my office to drop off my car, which would have meant another 1/2 hour ride to the PATH and then the 15 minute train ride into the city. I was in the car and I heard the news on the radio. It was impossible to understand the levity of the situation. As I arrived at the office and began to try to understand what had happened and what alternate plans we should make to get into the city, the second plane hit and I knew this was bad. Shock, fear, sadness and anger all overtook my being as horror reigned down on the city. I was suppose to be there. My sister works in Mid-town and now the main focus was making sure she was out of the city OK. It was a day marked by so many emotions. A day and evening spent with close friends. A week shaped by phone calls, news of friends lost and miraculous stories bigger than ours. A month shaped by a wedding that was planned in SOHO and guests scheduled to stay downtown now needing to be rebooked and moved, but how it did not seem important. For us it worked out. We are safe, our wedding went on and every day life moves forward. It's impossible to forget all of those who do not have that opportunity. I as an American am angry for all of this ignorance that there is so much hate in our society today and not enough peace. I just hope and pray that our children which are our future, can learn from other peoples ignorance and also refelct on it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember September 11th 2001 like it was yesterday, it was a Tuesday morning, and I had a class at 10:30am. Like any other college student, I liked to sleep as late as I could, then hurry to campus at the last possible moment so that I wouldn?t be late. So I was a little upset when the loud ring from the telephone interrupted my REM cycles. I somehow made it to the phone, still wishing I were back in bed. The man on the phone asked for my roommate, it was his dad. I told him he was asleep, but that I guess I could wake him up, still a little confused as to why my roommate?s dad needed to talk to him at 9 in the morning. The man on the other end seemed distraught; I asked him what was the matter. He asked me if I knew that one of the World Trade Towers had just been bombed. Still, in partially a sleepy mood, this did not register with me. I knocked on my roommate?s door and after waking him up, he impatiently said to come into his room and I told him the news and he took the phone and spoke with his dad. I then turned on the TV; sure enough I was bombarded with news on every channel highlighting this morning?s events. I stayed glued to the TV as I watched what replays they had of the day unfold in front of my eyes. As I was watching, I saw the plane crash into the second tower. It was so scary. I had no idea who was behind this or what would posses someone to do this. For some strange reason, I did not think this was going to turn out to be as big of a deal that it really is. I mean the Towers had been attacked before and there was the Oklahoma City bombing, but I never expected what happened on September 11th to escalate to what it is like today. I headed off to campus to make it to Geography class, as I drove I heard fire trucks continuously in the distance. I tried to call my mom, dad, and grandparents, but my cell phone was not getting any service. Two minutes into Geography, my professor cancelled class because her husband worked in the Pentagon and she could not get in touch with him (turns out he was fine). I was so scared; here I was no less than twenty miles away from the Pentagon, and not able to get in touch with my family. I quickly found the TV?s in the Johnson Center and sat for hours with the rest of the concerned student body as we watched the replays and latest updates on ?The Attack on America?. I was most scared because my dad was traveling that day and he was supposed to be on a business flight out of Boston that morning at 7 am, and I didn?t know where he was, if his plane had to make an emergency stop, or if he was even ok (he was fine, his plane was forced to land somewhere in Florida). I left campus and came back to my apartment where I finally got in touch with my family and I sat and watched the television for seriously the next ten hours. I was educated about this bin Laden guy, possible theories, and strange coincidences (911= 09/11). I remember September 11th 2001 like it was yesterday, and I will always remember that day for as long as I live, for it was the day that changed the way that I, and every other American and nationality live. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had dropped off my son, Matthew, at middle school and was heading to work @ 8:30 AM. Because we had been talking, I had turned off the car radio. I work in a garden center, and we were in the process of opening the store at 8:50 AM, when the manager came in to the store and said he had heard on the radio that a plane had hit the WTC in New York. We turned on the TV in the store (usually used for showing demo videos to customers) and were watching NBC's coverage of the "accident", when we saw the second plane hit the second tower. At that time I think we all began to believe that these were deliberate acts of violence. The employees took turns watching the TV coverage, alternating between shock and grief. How could this be happening in our country? Then we heard about the third plane hitting the Pentagon. One of my sisters works in Alexandria, VA, and I knew her husband worked for the Justice Dept., but I didn't know where his office was located. I called my husband, who was in a meeting and had not heard about the attacks. I could barely talk through my fear and my tears. I had a huge knot in my stomach and swallowing was difficult. After hanging up the phone, I immediately tried to call my sister at home, but I couldn't get through. I called my mother in Stephens City, VA, to see if she had heard from my sister, but she hadn't. She promised to call me as soon as she did hear anything. We continued to watch the news coverage, and soon heard the report of a plane crashing in PA. Initial reports were confusing, with some stations claiming the plane had been shot down to prevent it from reaching Washington, DC. At this point I looked for a quiet place to be alone and I began to pray. I prayed for the safety of my sister and her husband, for the people in the buildings hit, and the people on the planes. I prayed for the families across this country who were waiting, like me, to hear from family members or friends. The rest of the day was one of shock as the estimated death toll increased, as the images were replayed, and as I tried to hide my worries about my sister. I couldn't tear myself away from the TV or radio coverage. My sister and her husband were safe, although they had a difficult time getting home to their children. The friends I knew who had relatives in NY or DC also reported good news. But I will never forget the hours of not knowing, nor the fear I felt for days afterwards. The sound of a low-flying plane still makes my heart stop as I search the sky. And my heart continues to ache for the families and friends of the thousands who died that day. I pray that their pain is eased by the knowledge that so many people continue to pray for them. That morning I dropped my children off at school and went to my sisters to have coffee with her. She was on her way dropping her children off to school. We met at her house and she said that the radio announced a plane hit the world trade center, I then called my husbands cell phone to locate him because he took the path train to work. The cell phones and telephones were not working. We were concerned because our younger brother worked there. Within minutes our sister-in-law called to ask if we heard from our brother. We said no. He worked on the 93rd floor of tower one, but was at a meeting on 98th.We knew he didn't get out. My husband on the other hand was in the Battery Tunnel. They approached the Manhattan side and saw a lot of smoke coming into the tunnel, he ran for his life back to Brooklyn. He said it looked like something from Independence Day (the movie). He made it home Thank God. I feel my brother was in there with him helping him get out safely. I pray to God that my brother did not suffer. He left behind a wife three children all of young age. His son will never know him he was nly a year old. His other two are little girls one is 7 yrs and the other is 5yrs. And agian I pray to God that he did not suffer. God Bless America. I worked for a large Financial Services Firm and had just kicked off our campus recruiting season. The night before we had our first campus presentation at Rutgers University. I remember the sky opened up and it poured like crazy! Regardless the presentation to the students was successful, and it motivated me to charge ahead with this new season. The week prior and the week of the 11th I had meetings scheduled with our management team in preparation for their roles at the different campus events. September 6th was the last time I trudged through WTC to 222 Broadway for one of those meetings. I had intended to return to 222 on 9/11 in the am, but thought since the first presentation was the night before, and knew it would be a long day, I postponed it to 9/13. Had I not, I would have been stepping off the PATH train into the WTC at a time of utter chaos. Instead I was driving to the Light Rail in Jersey City, when I noticed smoke pouring out of the WTC after the first plane hit. I wasn't quite sure what I was looking at, but proceeded to park and get on the train that would take me to 101 Hudson St. directly across the river from WTC. In the process I called me husband (NYPD OFFICER) who was at home thank GOD, to see if anything was on the news, but nothing yet; then there was breaking news, but we still couldn't comprehend what was happening, so I told him I'd call him later. As we rode the train, we all were staring out the window at the WTC. A few times the train stopped, we got off then back on. Finally the train wouldn't go any further, and we walked the rest of the way to our building. I then saw both towers burning, and people running. I went into my building, and saw from the window the towers burning. An image that was so horrific I've blocked it from my mind. I was scared then, called my husband and left the building. I eventually made it to my car, turned around and saw the first tower fall, or so I thought. Then I drove like a mad woman to get home to my husband, not knowing when I'd be able to see him, only to get stuck in Bayonne because the bridge was closed. I pleaded with him on the phone not to go into the city, but he had other concerns as he hadn't heard from his brother (also NYPD) who was working downtown. Thankfully I can say we all were unscathed, aside from the horrible memories and lasting images and sadness from that day. It truly was surreal to see people crying, running, towers burning. It was truly in slow motion. We all know someone that perished, neighbor, friend; it's still so unbelievable. I didn't have to be at work that day til 10:00am, but since my husband had to be at work at 8:00 I woke up with him. We were watching Today on NBC, I remember hearing Katie Couric saying a plane or helicopter just crashed into one of the trade towers. Then a couple of minutes after that I watched as the second plane hit. That is when I and I am sure all of America knew this wasn't no accident, something serious was going on. My husband and I just sat there in disbelief. By this time my husband had to go to work, so I sat at home until I had to be at work and I watched everything that happend over those next few hours unfold. A part of me was scared, I was thinking where are they going to hit next? What else can they possibly do? The other part of me was very sad, for the innocent people who had lost their lives, in those horrific events. I left for work and listened on the radio to all the news reports going on. The area I was going to seemed like a ghost town. I got to the mall I was working at and there was a few customers there, but not very many. I remember walking down to the store, and seeing people of a certain ethnic group, and just being so angry at them, thinking how can people do this? I just walked in a complete daze, praying that everything would be okay. By the time I got to my store, my manager was talking to her boss, I wasn't there but 5 minutes, when we were told the mall was going to close early, this was at 10:15am. So I came back home, and watched more news, talked to family members, and just hoped that this was all a bad dream and that I would wake up soon, very soon. After the Murrah building was bombed here I went down to the sight, about one month after, it was such an emotional moment when I saw the ruins, I just bursted into tears, and as I write this I am crying.I could never imagine going down to ground zero and try to keep a dry face.I could not imagine what the people that died on this day one year ago was thinking when their planes were taken over, when they called there loved ones to tell them they loved them. I grieve for the families today, I could never imagine losing anyone in my family in such a horific event. I grieve for the families of the fire fighters and rescue units lost, the crews on those planes.
