We continue to feel the aftershocks as our aircraft industry community experiences layoffs and closings. On September 11, I hugged my then 3-year old son extra tight that afternoon after picking him up early from daycare. Since then, I never miss a chance to give him an extra kiss or tell loved ones that I love them. The most recent and deepest tremor was the April 2002 death of a close friend?s son in Afghanistan as he served in the Army. His fate was sealed that day in September as his base went on alert in San Diego and months later as he was sent to join troops near Kabul. The events are unexplainable to me and are especially so to the parents of a loving son who knew that he had a dangerous job but chose to continue so that others may not be harmed. I believe more than ever that we are all here on borrowed time and have come to a better understanding that each day is one more chance to get it right. It may be the last chance. You know New York is there because you see the skyline and so many parts of the city all the time--in the news, in movies, pictures everywhere. I was very shaken that morning on hearing about New York, but I realized that is was "surreal" because I have never been there (except as a six-year-old). But when I saw the Pentagon, I realized that our nation was in fact being attacked and the attacks were real. I have been to the Pentagon and seen it on many occasions because my father was in the U.S. Army and was stationed there in the late 1960s. Those images of the plane in the building were too much, and something I will never forget for the rest of my life. Perhaps the only good to come out of September 11th is that our nation truly became united. I am so proud. God Bless America! On the screen, was smoke everywhere. At first I thought it was a scene from a movie, but then voices filled my ears, informing me that a world trade tower had hit. I thought it was an accident. Then I left for school. My first period class didn't discuss it all. Not everyone was even aware of it, but when I when i stepped into my second period class, World Geography, it was a whole different world. The entire class was devoted to listening of our radio about the crashes. My teacher told us that is was probably terroist attacks, most likely Osama bin Laden. She said that he had tried once before to bomb the World Trade Center. The whole day was different. All of my classes were a lot less talkative. I was upset because i used to think the United States couldn' t be beaten or attacked. It was like something that seemed like it could always protect us. I got scared because i never thought that we would ever be attacked again. I was walking down the concourse when I heard a man having his shoes shined tell someone on his cell phone that "a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center". I thought to myself how funny it was that this man could believe such a silly rumor. As I got closer to my gate I realized that I was the only one walking down the concourse. You could hear a pin drop. It was surreal. I realized everyone in the airport was standing in front of the TV monitors. That's when I saw it. I got there just in time to watch the second plane hit. I was stunned. There are no words to describe how I felt even to this day. I think I felt fear mostly. I felt violated. I always thought no one could touch us here. We're supposed to be safe here. Things like this happen in other countries they don't happen here. Who could hate us that much? I was standing at my gate watching this happen with a group of people waiting to catch a plane to New York. I felt so sorry for them. I tried to imagine which ones were from there and which ones were just traveling in. Who had family there? Who had friends there? How would I feel if this was happening here in Chicago? I could hardly breath. Minutes later, the airport announced that all flights were cancelled. All I knew was that I wanted to get home. I wanted to be with my kids and my family. I wasn't going to work, I wasn't going anywhere but home to hold my babies. How very precious we all are. How very precious our country is. May we never ever take these things for granted. When I saw the devastating pictures that were in some way staring back at me, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Why was this happening? Why would someone purposefully hit the Twin Towers? Then the pictures on the screen only got worse...the Pentagon was struck! A symbol of our strength, now had a massive gash in her side. Could this get any worse? Yes...Flight 93 crashed in the countryside of Pennsylvania. America was under attack, how could this be? As the day that forever changed America unfolded, I sat in disbelief. There was a gash in our symbol of strengh, and then a city scape was forever altered when the Twin Towers came gracfully, but tragically down. Another symbol of our strength gone forever. But in some way another symbol of our strength and determination became ever more evident when it was found out the the passengers of Fight 93 fought back. Though our world will never be the same, we learned a valuable lesson. We learned we are vulnerable. We will never forget what happened on September 11, 2001. And may we never forget how Americans of every race, color, and creed came together not as individuals but as a nation to show the world, that you may be able to knock America down, but you will never be able to knock her out. About the time I heard it, my boss came down the hall and was asking what I had heard. As we were listening to the reports, the second plane hit the WTC. I went into our lounge area to see the television reports. In what is normally a very noisy and busy environment, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was standing, staring at the tv in disbelief. No one said a word. Tears were in several eyes, including the men. We all watched in silence for what seemed like an eternity. As we had to go back to our areas and go through the motions of working, it was a day like no other. The phones were eerily silent. They rang maybe 3 times the whole day. There were tears and sadness, and confusion. Unanswered questions and prayers lifted to God for comfort to those in pain. I still cry when I think about the events of that day and probably always will. I found my buried patriotism which had been taken for granted for too long. I display the flag with pride at my home and wear a flag pin almost everyday to remember all those who died that day and to honor the servicemen and women who do what they do so that I may be free. We were on I95 north past Boston,sometime after 9 am, when I noticed two planes bank sharply and head back toward Boston. We commented how strange it was. Our plan was to take a boat tour of Lake Winnipesaukee. When we got to Wolfeboro we parked up a side road, in front of a closed theater so we would have space for the camper. A lovely elderly woman walked over to us from her home. She said we were campers and the last to know anything. "We have been attacked and you have to come into my house and watch the TV. You won't believe it!" How odd to sit in a stranger's living room at 10:15am on September 11th 2002 and watch and listen. I never got this womans name. I know I said thank you when I left, I hope she knows how generous it was of her to bring us into her home. We went on our boaot tour and continued our vacation as planned. We worried and prayed. I am glad now that I was far away with my family with no TV and only a little radio and the newspaper to keep us connected to the events. Another employee came up to me with tears in her eyes and a sense of real urgency to her voice, but I could barely make out what she was telling me. It was that moment of dazed confusion. I had to ask her to repeat what she said. She said, "A plane has struck the World Trade Towers." As the reality of the situation began to set in, I felt that I needed to learn more about the situation and logged onto msnbc.com to see if there was any information available there. As I was logging on, the employee came running back into my office crying even more. She said, "Another plane just struck the World Trade Towers. I think we're under attack!" Suddenly, everyone in the department of 50 people became instantly upset. Some tried to continue to do their work answering an 800 telephone line. Others found it impossible to remain focused and were so devastated that they literally fled the building to go be with their children. The whole day was so surreal. Callers into our 800 line needed to talk about what was happening. So, besides trying to manage the work of the day, we found ourselves offering support to the customers. What I remember most is how dazed and stunned everyone looked. Total shock that this nightmare was happening. I could not wait to get home to my 17 yr old son and my 8 yr old daughter. I hugged them both so hard and kissed their sweet faces. I have always counted my blessings, but Sept. 11, 2001, really emphasizes my blessings even more. I am so proud to be an American. And, I was so proud of our president, George W. Bush. He was destined to be our president during this horrific event. No one else could have been as strong as he was for us. I remember waking up and my dad looking at me crying. I thought they had found something wrong with me. My mom asked me if I knew anyone in New York because a plane had crashed into a building. As I was coming out of the anesthesia, I had no clue as to the significance of what had taken place over in New York. My cousin was over there. He had to walk home from work with all the others walking home that day. So I got up, I walked out and look at the tv, the first words I said were "holy Sh#@!!". I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Just a few minutes after I got up, the first tower collapsed. I was at a loss for words, I just blankly stared at the tv in shock and disbelief. My mom had the radio on, and Howard Stern was broadcasting live from New York, talking about the twin towers being hit. It was hectic. I got to school, and that's all anyone was talking about. In all of my classes, we didn't do any work, we just watched the news. I remember getting home, and just watching the news all day to see if they had any more details. I was afraid that the next target would be in California, maybe in the Los Angeles area. On battle.net and various message boards, that's all anyone talked about. I also talked to my AIM buddies about it, they couldn't believe it either. I remember all the planes being grounded, how I panicked whenever I heard a plane outside, and I had to go out and check on it every time, and my dad's cousin being stuck at LAX on a business trip. Another interesting thing about that day was that it was 2 days before my 17th birthday. I was delivered 2 days later than expected. Had I been delivered when I was supposed to be, I would have a birthday on the same day as the horror now known as 9/11. I listened intently when they said a "commuter plane" had just crashed into the World Trade Towers. Thinking it was just a very tragic accident, I turned my car radio off and went inside. When I got there, it was a very different story. People were huddled around every TV and the news was grim. At that moment, the other plane careened into the second tower and at that time I knew we were under attack. The hours and days following were emotional, horrific and just unbelievable. Tell us your story: As I watched the fire burning from the first tower, I was thinking about how the plane had run into the Empire State Building and it was repaired. I was thinking "I wonder how long it will take to repair and reopen the World Trade Center" As I was watching, the second plane came into the frame on TV and I said to no one in particular "What is that plane doing flying over the center of the city." Then I saw the flames as the plane plunged into the second tower. I knew then that this was no accident. My wife's cousin called shortly from Maryland to ask what I thought of this madness. I replied that it was really bad what was going on in New York. She informed me that she was talking about the attack on the Pentagon. I had been away from the radio and TV and that bit of information caught me totally by surprise. The rest of the day I was glued to the TV to try to get all of the information I could about what was going on. Still, in my mind, I am trying to understand what we Americans had done to fill someone with so much hatred that they could plan and carry out such an evil deed. We are not a perfect society but I can't imagine planning anything so horrible as what happened on September 11, 2001. I had my cell phone on. My daughter-in-law called and asked me if I knew what was going on. I had not turned the TV on that morning. I was listening to the radio, but at that time, there was no mention of anything out of the ordinary. I was in shock! How could this be happening? Was it an accident? Those poor people! I, as most, thought it was an accident, but after the second plane hit we all knew we had been attacked. Being attacked was not surprising, as I knew we would be someday. I just didn't know when or where. Soon jets would roar overhead patrolling the no-fly zone for nearby Camp David. The most impressive point about this day was the courage of the passengers on Flight 93. The most disheartening point was the failure of our government to prevent this. Clinton's incompentence certainly contributed to this attack. What really enraged me was the fact that pilots are not allowed to be armed. What a difference that could have made.The sad part is our leaders have learned little from this. At first I thought how could anyone miss this tower?! As I rode up the elevator and pondered on the news event I had just heard, I realized something was very wrong with that statement. You just do not accidentally miss a skyscraper today, maybe in earlier times of aviation this is possible, but, not today!! I ran from the elevator, opened our office and ran to our lunch room and turned on the television. There is was, the tower in flames. I had opened the office before the staff arrived that day, as I had done for the past two years, so as always I was alone glued to the set feeling so much more alone than ever. Then it happened right before my eyes!! A second plane hit the second tower! It looked like an action movie, but it was real. Then came one of the worst sights I had ever seen in my life. Both towers collapsed. I felt sick and screamed because before my eyes, I knew that thousands of people were crushed to death, their bodies melted right into the metal and debris of the fragmented buildings. I dropped to my knees, I cryed and prayed to the Lord to help us all. Now every morning I drive to work and pray that I return home safely, because, on September 11, 2001 so many left for work that morning to never return home.
