There was a TV for us to watch, and as we tuned in we were devastated as we watched it live. A day in my lifetime that I never expected to witness. My heart went out to all of the ones who were lost in these attacks as well as to their family and friends. I lost a teenage daughter in a tragic car accident so I know the meaning of un-prepared, un-expected, sudden loss of a love one. These heros will be in my heart and prayers for the rest of my life here on earth. Out of every thing bad, good does happen. Americans have banned together to be stronger than ever, and I believe our young people have a renewed respect for our country. I felt such a weight on me from the time I purchased my ticket. My heart sunk at Heathrow, as I said my goodbyes to my wife. In Canada, I was unable to contact anyone for some time. My wife cried on the phone that she would give up her way of life in England and many belongings to live with me in Montana. We will never part, again. One of our more frequent customers came in and said something about there being a crash in the U.S, I didnt take much notice untill I got home some 2hours later. My mum had the television on and was siting on the sofa with her mouth wide open as CNN showed the second plane hitting the twin towers, at first it looked like it was just flying behind it, then the red's, oranges and black filled the screen. Tell us your story: The first time I heard about the plane crashes on the World Trade Centers was during my third period class at Washington Irving Middle School. I was sitting in civics class with all of my other classmates (I think we were taking notes at the time) when a teacher from the hallway ran in and told us to turn on the television to any local news channel. Our attention quickly turned to the TV as my teacher, Mrs. Gardella turned it on. The first image we all saw was the first tower completely engulfed with flames, and then the news channel played a replay of the plane actually crashing into the building. The classroom was completely silent. I don?t think we all knew if it was real at first; it sure seemed like a joke. I believe the first words that came out of my mouth was ?What?! What?s going on?!? I was a bit confused. Then I realized that they were indeed the Twin Towers in New York; the same towers I?ve seen over and over when we drove by them going up north for various soccer tournaments and trips. When they showed the replay of the huge plane hitting the tower, the room was full of gasps. Nobody could believe it. Could this really be happening to the United States? Before we knew it, they turned the attention over to the Pentagon in Washington DC. They didn?t show the plane hitting the Pentagon, but we saw the live broadcasting of all of the flames and ash rising from the building. Almost immediately, kids in my class began crying with their hands over their mouth in disbelief. I then realized that a lot of the students in this area have families that work in the government; many of them had parents working in the Pentagon. One girl actually got up and ran to the phone that was behind my teacher?s desk. Her dad works at the Pentagon and so she called her mom to see if she knew any instant details. The news channel played the same video over and over again of the plane hitting the towers. She actually turned off the TV which really made me angry. We were forced to stay in the classroom until the principal came on the announcements and told us what to do next. Nobody could stay calm for the rest of the day. I myself wasn?t directly effected by it, but I knew a lot of kids that had family members that worked in the Pentagon or nearby. I couldn?t stand not knowing specific details about the attack; why it happened, was it by accident, and who was behind it. I was very surprised that they kept us in school until regular time. Actually, it made me very furious. Many of these kids needed comfort from their families, and school was not the place to provide such comfort. I didn?t learn answers until later on in the day. A lot of this attack still remains unanswered. Terror levels have been high ever since, and many views on foreign countries have changed. Many people have compared this attack to the attack on Pearl Harbor, but personally, I believe the attacks on the trade centers and the pentagon are more intense, probably because I lived it myself. Some fanatic, amoral group has committed mass murder in Lower Manhattan and Northern Virginia. At first we all wanted to know "why?" Now we need to answer "what next?" We know very little about the people who hijacked the planes that became guided missiles directed at our high-profile economic and military establishments and at our national pride. But we can be certain that anyone willing to give up their own life while committing such a crime must have been reckless to a degree few of us can imagine. This is at the heart of the elusiveness of the terrorist threat: not only is the enemy without country and with cooperators dispersed throughout the world, but also they are animated by a reckless outlook that makes them effectively impervious to danger. Recklessness has a power that sheer military power cannot easily conquer. We learned that lesson in Vietnam when American use of staggering firepower could not stop the Vietcong. An elusive, low-tech enemy, especially if highly motivated ideologically can easily slip below radar and inflict terrible wounds, even when not making steps toward military conquest in the conventional sense. If the United States were to use massive military might against the current terrorist threats, the cure would be worse than the disease. Surely, many civilians would be killed; it would not be easy to kill the real enemies; and the next images of destruction would show America as the aggressor on a par in many minds with the terrorists. Worse even than all these moral and political problems, the tactic would be a military failure, because it would encourage still more recklessness. If thousands are killed in various Middle Eastern countries, what would it do to stop a few dozen morally deranged, fanatic hijackers with knives or some other weapon from taking down the Sears tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, or Cinderella's Castle? Although to most Americans these dastardly deeds were a strike out of the blue, to citizens of the Middle East, they are a much more high profile version of daily life. There has been colonial occupation, dictatorship, protracted war, refugee flight, and terrorist fear for generations-often with American support. Indeed, the long-standing Arab-Israeli conflict is at the ideological ground zero motivating these terrorist fanatics. US efforts both to take firm sides and to broker peace have made few strides toward peace, especially toward lessening the cancer of terrorism that infects the Middle East, especially Israel. The enormity of last week's event presents an unprecedented opportunity to break through that deadlock. With the moral authority that comes from being badly bloodied, the US can turn from serving as the helpful broker to being the insistent heavy, demanding settlement that will resolve the impasse. President Bush is fond of using the image of political capital. We now have a rare, precious, and short-lasting outpouring of world emotional capital for doing something dramatic to root out the motivating source of this fanaticism. In this climate, it can even be a no-fault settlement. Without blaming either side, the US with almost every other nation can insist on coming to terms that will pull out the rug from future attempts to recruit suicide pilots. The US can go still further to squeeze some good from all these evil events. Much more effective than massive retaliation would be a massive world court. Now that this horrible deed has focused world attention, an unprecedented worldwide alliance can work together to hunt down these criminals and bring them to justice. Making war on fanatics will simply make them more fanatical. But presenting them in public trial will embarrass them and anyone else who would be tempted to join them. There should be a world court, with prosecutors from many nations, lurid images of their crimes, and publicity bigger than for the Olympics. Better yet, set the court in the Middle East, to make clear that the source of this fanaticism is to be recognized and corrected. If going to court seems like a slight act for such an enormous crime, remember the way the presidential election was settled. For all the follies that came with the post-election election, at least it was a shift in power that came without bloodshed. This is a war for the "hearts and minds" of world citizens, especially for those who might contemplate doing something like this again. This phrase was coined during the Vietnam, when we hypocritically combined it with huge military destruction. This time, we need to kill the terror with humiliation, not more bloodshed to make it really work and help us reestablish our national security on solid ground. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Tuesday was a beautiful morning. It was crisp and cool in my little orchard town in the Commonwealth. I was in second period gym class and we were playing field hockey on the upper field on our campus. I was the goalie for my team and suddenly I was stung by a yellow jacket. I rushed over to my teacher and told her that I had to go to the nurse, because I may have an allergic reaction to the sting. As I walked through the building, things were normal. About five minutes after I entered the nurse's office, the familiar voice of my principal came over the loud-speaker. I couldn't really hear what he was saying because the nurse's intercom was broken. We, in the office thought it had something to do with an airplane and the WTC. Immediately my thoughts panned back to images of that small Cesna that crashed into the White House lawn. A friend and I walked to the main office to inquire what had happened and we were stunned to hear that two jetliners had crashed into each of the WTC towers. My heart sank and I felt very ill and cold. My next class an English class which I shared with seven other seniors. My school building had just been built the last year and so some details had not been completed. One of those little details happened to be setting up the television network to the televisions that had been placed in every room. Needless to say, we had no means of watching the news coverage of the horrific event save a small five inch black and white tv which my teacher kept in her closet. For the next hour my classmates and I sat, our eyes glued to the minute screen and tried to comprehend the smoke, fire, dust, and destruction. Administrators, students, and teachers learned about our tv and soon crowded around it with us. We learned about the Pentagon and about a possible fourth hijack and were horrified as we found that Flight 93 had crashed in our own state. I'll never forget how each one of us in that small classroom had a name of someone they knew that worked in the WTC district or Pentagon, or just friends who lived in Manhattan. We watched as reports of possible car bombs outside the State Department drove our student teacher into a frenzy of panic. Her boyfriend was an intern for the Department of State. It was the sense of not knowing that made the moment horrific. So many questions arose. "Who were the culprits?" "How many were dead?" "Where was the President?" "Were there other targets?" "Who is Osama bin Laden?" (For some, his name meant nothing on September 10, but would soon become common in the English vocabulary.) "Are we safe here?" And the most frightening question, the one that no one could answer: "What happens now?" I remember dashing out emails for my classmates and anyone else who wanted to know the whereabouts of their family and friends. The school's network was flooded and it was very difficult to send messages and move from page to page, but I became the designated news director and kept tabs on about five different webpages. I can still recall the lump in my throat and the diminishing contents of the tissue box sitting nearby. I spent my time while waiting for pages to download by watching the terrifying televised scenes. Before that morning they had only been common to memories of Pearl Harbor and movies like Independence Day. As tears clouded my vision and sobs shook my body, I thought of how much I loved this country. How much I respected the men and women who would fight for it. I thought of the brave souls who ran into the burning hell that terrorists had made for us. I thought about a thousand things in that hour. And I knew in that single moment as Tower One fell in slow motion to her iminent death that I would never love this nation any less than I did in that instant. A team is as strong as its weakest player, and on the morning of September Eleventh, members of the American team became equal and strong and resolute. We will never weaken despite many things that make us doubt our country and our government, ourselves and each other. We are all that each other has, and on a beatiful morning in September, we came to realize just how much really have. They had the TV on CNN and they had two big buildings and one of them was on fire. I regret admitting this, but when I saw it at first, all I thought was oh gosh, not this dumb stuff again, when will these idiotic people stop trying to scare us with their stupid ideas. Then another plane hit the next building. Oh my, I began to really feel scared. I had NO complete idea what was to happen next. Then, the first tower began to fall. I covered my lips with my hands as I saw dust fly and people running and screaming. I was really afraid for my life at that moment. I didn't know what was going to happen to me or my family. Later on we had to go to our next class downtown from Pensacola. We watched as headlines kept repeating, WTC hit by hijacked planes and Pentagon hit as well. I was very shocked, afraid, amazed, everything. I was very, very confused. I didn't actually know what to think. We watched Cnn, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, gosh, all those channels. The only thing my mom remembers me saying when I came home was, "When is my daddy leaving?" My dad is in the Naval Reserves, they call them the Seabees. He had to leave a few weeks later to go to his reserve base for 2 weeks. My father left active duty when I was 8, I'm now 13. He had not been with my family for a while so that's why he left and became a seabee. I know that if my father had been in active duty, I might not have never seen my father again. I just want to let anyone out there who is reading this and they are in the military or has a family member fighting the war that I love you so much. I don't know you or whoever you know who is in the war but I thank God everyday that those men are alive. Tell us your story: I was at work at Einstein Medical Center when I first heard of the attacks; one of my patients started yelling, "A plane just hit the World Trade Center!" I didn't believe it at first until I saw it on TV for myself and then watched the second plane hit. Feeling numb (and choking back tears)and watching as breaking news that the Pentagon was attacked, I immmediately called my parents, boyfriend and my best friend- I just needed to hear their voices; the Pentagon- I thought nothing could even come close to penetrating the Pentagon. Everyone, including the patients, were silent for the rest of the day. I picked up the last four hours of a friend's 12-hour shift so that she could be with her husband and children. When I got home later that night I just sat on the couch and watched on TV in disbelief of what had happened that day. My best friend and I visited Ground Zero on Nov.14,2001...I just could not believe that the Twin Towers were gone (I hadn't been to the WTC in years). We had gone shopping with our two children and had accidently left our tv on. When we walked in the first tower was on fire and we saw the second plane hit tower two. At first we thought it was a joke but after watching for a few seconds new it wasn't. We were all just stunned. We were so shocked that someone would do this to our country. We sat and just stared at the tv. I started to cry because of all the innocent people lost. My husband just kept staring at the tv. He later told me he was so stunned he just didn't know what to do. We called our family to make sure they were okay. After that we pretty much just watched tv and prayed for all those lost or missing. The pricipal came over the intercome and announced that we were not to go out side for recess do to an excess of bees on the playground. A total lie. I noticed my teacher was visably upset and several students were sent home. I didn't learn about what happend until i was walking home with a neighbor of mine who was in the fourth grade. He told me "there was a little war at the Pentagon" his older sister told me that someone had bombed the twin towers and the Pentagon. My cousin was working at the Pentagon at the time and i felt myself begin to go into shock. I raced home to find my mother and sister sitting together in my mothers room in front of the TV. I asked about my counsin, my mother had already called her. She was late to work that day. Then all we, and many americans, could do, was sit in front of the TV in disbelief and fear. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As I look back now, it seems like it all just happened yesterday. It was a nice day, bright with a nice temperature to it. I woke up with the normal things on my mine, like the Spanish homework that was due that I didn?t even touch last night. I got to school, and went to my first block, and everything was fine. We did activities in one of my nice teachers classes, and had fun like we always did learning about US History. So after that class I had Spanish. I walked in with the thought of not getting the points I needed for a good grade, but it was only the second week of school, so I?d be okay. Not even ten or fifteen minuets n to the class, another teacher came in and whispered into my teacher?s ear. I didn?t think much of it, but I would fine out that it was actually something that would affect the nation. The teacher turned to the class and with a quiet voice, told us that the world trade center had been hit by a plane and that the pentagon was on fire. Now, needless to say, this information was a little off, but it was still a bit frightening, especially because of the schools close location to Washington D.C. We turned on the TV, along with the rest of the school, to see what was going on. Eventually, the teacher couldn?t take any more and she had to turn it off, for our sake and hers, but after some busy work, all our minds drifted back to what was going on, so we turned the TV back on to find that another plane had hit the second tower. Shortly after, the principal came on to the speaker to tell us to remain calm, and when we were eating lunch, to stay away from the main road in front of the school. That made things a little scary. Now, the bell rang, and walking through that hallway after class is what stands out the most in my mind about 9/11. The sounds didn?t sound right, the voices were all scared and in the back round, people crying could be heard. Immediately the clue to the crying popped into my head?close to half of the student population probably had parents in the pentagon or in the general Washington D.C. area. The rest of the day crept by. Even when the TV was off and we weren?t even talking about it, the events kept popping into our heads every time we heard sirens zooming by the school, or somebody was heard crying in the halls. I saw more worried faces at my school that day then we all had to stay out in the football bleachers for 3 hours because of a bomb threat. When I got home, the TV got turned on and I sat down in front of it. I sat there all night, and I barely had the concentration to talk to my girlfriend, but she was also very much involved in what was going on, so it was mutual. The rest of that week went by, and the weeks after that. But that first walk through the halls still stands out to me. I?m a senior now and these are my hallways. And to think that such a combination of fear?of hate?of confusion?were all in my halls?it?s a very upsetting thought. They were supposed to stay for a week and would have been there on 911 my college classes were starting back up that week and they watch my daughter for me while i was at school. they decided to come back early to watch my daughter for me. on 911 i was at school i had an early morn class and was in the cafe after class was over this girl runs in and yells "A Plane just hit the world trade center" we turned on the Tv and watched i ran to my car and got home as fast as i could. when i turned my car on that was when the second tower was hit i was beginning to get really nervous and anxoius to get home. i just wanted to get home to my daughter who at the time was not even one. if we were under attack i wanted to be with her. Then the Pentagon was hit while i'm still driving. all aircraft was already grounded. but i still saw them in the sky and really began to panic. all unmarked trailer trucks scared me i almost got into lots of accidents trying to get away from them thinking there are bombs in the back. I get home and get my step dad who was sleeping he did not know what was going on. i woke up my daughter from her nap and just held her and cried while watching all this terror unfold. I called my mom because she was in Boston with my grandfather and asked her if hse was ok i told her what happened because they didn't even know they never heard it I told her 2 of the planes faome from Logan and to get out of the city as fast as possible. I"m very grateful in not lossing anyone that day and am more grateful that my step brother has not been shipped out during our War on Terrorism. Today I went to a memorial at our local fire station while my daughter who will be 3 9/17 was at school. We are grateful in our town that noone has been lost. but our hearts and prayers go out to all those who suffered in this tragidy. On 9/13 there is a memorial for a local women who is form the next town frm me who was on one of the flights from Logan airport in Boston. some of her remains were just found and sent home. After 2 years parts of her remains were finally found it was only bone fragments but at least it's something to give the family a tiny bit of Closure. I'm thinking of going to pay my respects I don't know the family but i feel it's part of my duty as an American to pay my respects. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was early. I was half-awake/half-asleep in bed (we're 2 hours behind NewYork time). My husband was already up and downstairs watching the stock channel - his morning ritual. All of a sudden I heard pounding on the stairs as all 240 pounds of him ran up the stairs to gasp out what had happened and turn the TV on. I couldn't believe my eyes. It felt as if I was still asleep, dreaming...like watching an Orson Wells movie of the end of the world. I watched the first plane hit the tower(replay) several times before I really understood it was real...and as awful as it was I still didn't fully comprehend how bad or real until I saw "live" the 2nd plane hit the tower....AND even then I realized it was bad, I knew many people would die but as the towers were still standing I also felt that only those where the plane hit would perish...I was so wrong. When those towers went down, my heart sank. And even though I am safe and sound in Boise, Idaho and to my knowledge know noone personally who was killed, I feel as If I do. I felt then and feel now a deep sense of sorrow and a firm resolve to do what I can as a citizen and American to support the full eradication of this evil. It won't be easy, kind or even fair, but this is a cancer that needs to be destroyed or cut out for survival. I've been most affected by the sight of the man and women who held hands as they jumped to their death. I've tried to understand how a decision of that magnitude could be made and what it must have been like up there for them to make it...I'll never forget the sight and I will always see those people holding hands. The rest of the morning and throughout the day I was glued to my TV waiting to see what would happen next and wishing I were in NewYork to help, to do anything. I've also been affected by the the phrase "Let's Roll". What a gift of courage and grace was shown on that flight. I've wondered how I would act in the same circumstance. Would I be brave as they were? Would I think of others before myself as they did? Would I behave with grace and dignity as they did? I believe it's not over yet...we have to stay strong, firm in our efforts and resolve. 5-10 years from now, I wonder where we'll be, what we'll know, what we'll have experienced. A school in a little town near Lake Ontario, way out in the "sticks." The plane collision happened during second period while I was in gym. I first heard about the crashes during 3rd period art. The television was turned on and it showed a building blazing with smoke. As we all watched, another explosion happened in the building next to it. At the time I didn't know that a plane had hit it, I didn't know a plane hit the other one either. Eventually as we watched, both of the buildings crumbled to the ground. At the sight of 110 stories of rubble, it shocks everybody to know that Thousands of people died. More than 3,000 people died during all this. The planes that hit the World Trade Centers were hijacked by terrorists and flown into the buildings. One other plane has also flown into the Pentagon. And another had crashed near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After I got home that day my parents hadn't really heard of the crashes. They knew that planes had hit the World Trade Towers but nothing else. I filled them in about the whole deal and they continued to watch the news. We continued to keep up with the information that was being posted on the news for about a week. One week later there are a lot of families and friends still in shock of what happened. Since then the United States has improved the airport security and general awareness of suspected terrorists. The United States still receives threats in our country towards other terrorist actions to this day. We are now at war with terrorism and still sending troops over to the Middle East, Afghanistan, and wherever terrorism still exists. We will continue to be at war with terrorism until it exists no more. Ten months later the United States have not shown their pride and nationalism in our country, the nationalism has slowed to where hardly anybody cares. I was sitting on the couch talking to a good friend on the phone, just waiting for my 2 year old to wake up and start the day, when my husband, who works at American Airlines, O'hare called on the other line to tell me a plane just hit one of the World Trade Center towers. I quickly turned the t.v. to CNN and sat there in complete disbelief. I clicked back to my friend and told her. Moments later we both listened to the report that a second plane hit. Then I was scared. I hung up with my friend to call my mom in Florida. She turned on the t.v. and saw the reporting and we just sat there in silence watching. We occasionally would say "unbelievable" or "I can't believe this is happening." I then hung up with her to make and recieve more calls.
