We had left our homestate of Tennessee the night before and had not been on the road more then about 2 hrs when I decided to put the radio on. At first I thought that the station that we were listening to was doing a radio show . The first Twin tower had just been struck as were listening were in shock when the radio announcer said the another tower had been struck. We could not believe what we were hearing . In order for us to get where we were going we had to go through D.C. We could not believe that the Pentagon had been struck also. Both my husband and myself and our 13 yr old daughter took a moment to pray . We were so frightened.We began thinking that the United States was being attacked. Well it was.But not the way we thought.As we drove on it became apparent that travelers on the interstate were not going far. We saw a lot of people get off the interstate. The hwy was very quiet that day. When we arrived at our destination which is close to Baltimore airport we saw that the airport was very quiet. All along our trip we noted that the air was very quiet.Every gas station that we stopped in buzzed with news of the episodes that rocked our country and our very foundation . My husband and myself noted that people bonded together. Strangers to one another but has a fierce love of their country. I will never forget that day in history. As we entered Washington my husband and I could not believe how dead the streets were. Most everyone went home early that day.How we found that out is through my husbands family members. It was a very somber and sad day.We will never forget that day as long as we live. Tell us your story: I was on maternity leave and September 11, 2001 was the first morning that I did not turn on the television as soon as I woke up. I was playing with my daughter when my husband called at about 11:00 am. His voice was shaking and he asked me if I was watching television. I turned it on and there was the image. I remember feeling confused. The towers had fallen by the time I realized anything had happened. No one could answer the question on everyone's minds. Who would do such a thing? My question wasn't who or why, but what. What world did I bring my daughter into? That has been my question every day since the attacks on our nation. I know it has been on the minds of so many parents out there. I pray every day that people begin to understand what hurt hatred can bring. I usually turn on the radio first thing to listen to the local talk radio topics of local interest. I was stunned by what I was hearing. I really couldn't believe it. So I picked up the phone and called my husband. I asked if he was watching TV? He said no, so I asked him to turn it on and see if they were talking about the plane that had just hit the World Trade Center. So he did, and they were. We talked on the phone several times during that day as he watched the TV and I listened to the radio. I guess I did some work that day, but I know it couldn't have been much. I just kept listening, and thinking. My husband and I and his parents were scheduled to leave on September 13th for a vacation to the east coast. We talked to each other, and then with his parents as to wether we should cancel our plans or continue with them. We had really decided to cancel going by that evening. Then the next morning (the 12th)we looked at each other and said "we are going". By not going the "Terrorist" win by causing us to chance our lives. So we went! Though we had to change some of the areas we had planned to visit. I had really been looking forward to going to Washington D.C.. I love lighthouses and had also planned to visit the one near Virginia Beach that is close to the navel base. It was barricaded off to the public. But the most memorable moment of the whole trip was looking out across the bay as the USS Roosevelt was leaving port. I know we were quite a distance from it, but it looked so big. I remember feeling so proud! But at the same time I said a prayer to GOD to watchover and protect all those brave people who were leaving on an uncertain journey. As the year since 911 has passed I am proud of the way most of our citizens have handled these trying times. I believe in and support our president, George W. Bush. Tell us your story: I got to school started my work and my teacher came in and told us that two planes had crashed into the world trade centers and some people started crying, and some people thought it was a joke but then we turned on the t.v and we saw the fire comeing out of the building and then it hit the second one and we new that something was going on and after I saw that I was crying and thought of all those kids that do not have mom's and dad's any more and I started to cry harder and then alot of peoples mom's started picking them up from school and my mom was at work so I stayed at school and for the rest of the day we watched the news and wrote poems about what just happend and when I got home I could not go outside because my mom would not let me but I was scared I would not even go on my porch I was so scared. I felt really bad for those inocent people and hoped that who ever did it should die. The nexted day we wrote notes to the police man and to the fire and perimetic people, hopeing they would like it. He had recently graduaded from Syracuse Universaty Law School. I knew his firm was in the Met Life Bld. but did not know how far that was from WTC. He phoned me immediatly following the 1st plane crashing into the building to tell me. At that point he thought it was an accident. As we were talking the other plane hit and he gasped and said "this is not an accident, we are under attack". At the same time the loudspeaker came over telling everyone to evacuate immediately. He told me he loved me & would call me as soon as he could. I turned on the TV and watched the horror in shock & disbelief with panic. Everyone we knew called to inguire about him, but I could not even talk. For 4 horrible hours I did not know if he was ok. Thank God he was not close, although he did go & try to help others. My heart goes out to all the parents & everyone who lost loved ones that horrible day.I know how they feel. 1 year later I still cannot think of that day without crying. Tell us your story: Shortly after I got to work in the Ford House Office Building that day, a colleague's wife called him from home in the suburbs to tell him to switch on a television, to see what was happening in New York City. As soon as he saw the video of the first plane colliding with the tower, he yelped and called out to the three of us then in the office. We watched, appalled, as the television showed it happening a second time. Scarcely able to gather our thoughts, we agreed that it could have been an accident the first time, but not the second. The woman with children at home was calling her sitter when, without video at first, the television told us that the Pentagon had now been hit. Our supervisor arrived for work and gave us all permission to leave if we wanted. Two were preparing to do this, but not me. However, when I called home and found the phone suddenly dead, I changed my mind. All the phones were dead, in and out. Cell phones were not working. Before someone switched off the television, the first tower fell. We were gathering up our things to leave for home when two young military types knocked at the office door and told us to evacuate. They stayed and watched to ensure we left. Later we learned they were police cadets in a training class in our building and two had been assigned to clear each floor. My route home is via the Metro subway. I felt some reluctance to descend to the station. Passengers suddenly arriving from all the federal buildings in the area were asking each other what was safest--to stay in the city or travel home to the outskirts. No-one knew what the next targets might be. Bridges and tunnels seemed obvious possibilities. The subway system itself may have been targeted. Regardless, we were being told to go home. The cars were jammed with shaken people. Strangers talked, over and over having to repeat what we call saw on television, to cope with it and absorb the reality. At the connecting station for the Blue Line, some military men who had been in the Pentagon got on. They had escaped from the undamaged section but spoke of terrible damage and hundreds of deaths. At that time, it was not clear that, again, the weapon was a plane, and they thought the helicopter pads at the Pentagon had been blown up. My cell phone would not work, although it normally does in the trains and stations, until I was outside the station at the end of the line. Finally I was able to call my husband and reassure him I was okay. Our son, the other family member who lives in the area, called later to say his private sector organization had been send home. He would like to come to us, his parents, instead of to his house. We spend the day gaping at the television together, glad to be alive and well,but horrified at what had happened and what it would portend. I was on the Beltway (495)and listening to the local radio station when the Disc Jockey announced that an airplane hit the World Trade Center. The announcer was not certain of the details of damage, when approximately 15 minutes later he reported that another plane hit the second World Trade Center building. At this time I had a sick feeling in my stomach, and I knew that this would be sad day. Upon entering the Hospital everyone was in a state of urgency. Everyone in the hospital that was available, was glued to the television watching the events unfold before them. I was finally seen by nurse to take my vitals and was sent home. When I arrived home, my collegue called my house to inform me that our friend and collegue's wife was seriously injured in the Pentagon terrorist act. She was severly burned. What a day to remember! My mom and dad were also on vaction with us. I would say around 9:00 a.m my dad knocked on the door and told me to turn off cartoons and turn on channel 13. Just as i turned on the T.V. they were showing the first plane going through the trade center. I said "what is this a joke" and then the other plane went through the other tower. My dad said no joke. I could not belive what i was seeing. We then saw people falling out of the buildings and my four year old asked what they were and why did the planes hit the buildings. I could not think of a thing to day but the truth and I told her the best that I could through all my tears and sobbing.( I cry now as I type)For those who are not familar with Ocean city it is a big beach resort. All that day all the T.V.s everywhere were on the news. People all over the board walk were passing out flags to carry and all who had flags carried them all week. Tell us your story: Even though I live on the west coast and am physically distanced from the actual sites of this horrific act, the emotional effects are hard to describe. In watching the second plane circling the tower and then going into it, was like watching something surreal> It reminded me of King Kong (original with Faye Ray) as he was on the Empire State Builiding and planes were trying to attack him, surreal. It is a vision that will be with me the rest of my life. For anyone to declare this act in name of religion sickens me. You do not have to like or agree with US policy or opinions and you do not have the right to take innocent lives because you do not like us. It saddens me anytime I recall that and proceeding days. I was watching my local news to see about the weather and local happenings before I drove my daughter to school. The Fox network that I was watching that morning broke in with the plane crash into the first tower and I thought, "What is going on, what a horrible accident!" That's what I thought it was at first. I sat there thinking about those poor people and what were they going to do, would they get out ok? Minutes later I saw the second plane bank into the other tower I was thinking "How can this be happening? Tears flowing from my eyes I knew this was not an accident but a horrible deed being done against the people of America, I knew it was a terrorist attack! My daughters couldn't understand why I was crying and I did my best to explain what was going on but not to frighten them and we said a prayer that God would be there and help all those people. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that the towers would collapse nor that so many would die that day, it was a beautiful day here in Missouri as well, and to have this happen on such a beautiful day was like a dream. My heart goes out to all the victims families and they will always be in my prayers. May God watch over us and hold us in his hands and keep us, this wonderful nation, out of harms way . May we, his children , learn to love one another no matter what race, religion, etc. we may be. We are ALL his children! Tell us your story: I was going to work at Abbott Laboratories, listening to the radio when I first heard of the "passenger aircraft that hit the World Trade Center" as the radio first announced it. I didn't think much of it as I thought, it may have been a small plane that hit the building, I went into work and was relaying the news to a co-worker who hadn't heard of it. As we listened to the radio the news became more clear, we started getting phone calls from friends and spouses, as I frantically tried to find a TV somewhere at work I listened and then started to watch the video feeds via the Internet news channel. All I could do was watch in horror as we watched the first tower on fire and listening to the news broadcasters relaying information. Then came word of the second plane hitting the second tower, all we could do was listen in horror as we came to realize what was actually happening. I frantically tried to call my girlfriend Cheryl in Michigan to talk to her because I was an emotional wreck inside. As we all stood watching and listening to the news, I was numb, dumb founded as to why and who... In the coming hours and days as the who and why became known, I had such a rage within me, and like a lot of other folks in this country, I came to realize that we, America, are no more safer against terrorist acts as any other country that has had a terrorist act committed against them. I've always been patriotic, but like most all Americans, my patriotism came rushing out, I was angry I wanted revenge, I wanted retribution, but after listening to President Bush and realizing that it wouldn?t come quick I figured I?d do what I can. I donated blood, gave to charity for the victims, and prayed for the lost souls that never deserved to have this happen to them. I display my American flag up on my living room window, and I swore that it wouldn?t be put away as my show of American faith for all to see, to show any would be terrorist that we will never cave in, that the American people will never be bought to our knees as they so much wanted to do on that fateful day. Almost a year later I still get emotional when I think about what happened, it has had such a profound effect on my life and the way I see things. I wish I could do so much more than the tiny bit I feel I?ve done. I, in no way can realize what the families of these people must go through day in and day out, but I hope that life for them gets a bit easier as the days go by, my heart and prayers go out to them, they loved ones are the true heroes of America, and till the day I leave this earth I will never forget??? The Principal came on the anouncements, saying to turn your televisions on CNN. I had no idea what was going to be on that T.V. I looked up, and saw that second tower in flames. I watched the first one crumble to the ground. I was so horrified at what I saw. Some boys in the room didn't know the seriousness of the event, and they were laughing. I was in shock for the rest of the day. It wasn't until a couple months later, when i saw a special on the tragedy, that i started to cry. It was like the shock was over and the fear and pain had set in. My uncle was only 2 blocks from he sight of the tragedy that day, and i'm so grateful that he didn't get caught up in it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I left for work on the morning of September 11, 2001 at 7:45am as I always do. It is only a 15 minute drive to my office and I wanted to be in at 8:00. Even though our office does not officially open until 9:00, I am always in at 8:00. I enjoy that hour of solitude to ease into my day before my co-workers arrive and the chaos begins. We are accountants and CPA's of which I am one of the partners. September 15 is a big deadline for us and the day was expected to be long and very busy. We had just landed a new account a few weeks before 9/11/01. This new company had offices in Tower B of the World Trade Center. If fact just the week prior to 9/11/01 I was in those offices. I live and work only 15 miles from New York City. At around 8:45am a co-worker came running into my office to tell me that one of the World Trade Center towers was hit by a twin engine airplane. My response was impossible - go back to work- you must be mistaken. As the next few minutes unfolded it turned out he was mistaken and our September 15 deadline quickly became unimportant. The good news is all of the employees of our new client with the offices in the trade center got out alive. The bad news is that there were so many people in our area who did not get our. The horror of that day still makes me cry. It was the first time in my life I was afraid for my life. We did not know if there were more attacks coming. I was 37 years old at the time and now realize a whole generations innocence was lost that day. We will never be and should never be the same. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work in a clothing store that is in Central New York, I'm one of the store's managers. I remember getting ready for work, and hearing on the radio about the first plane hitting the towers, and feeling as if it were all a dream.. I knew it was real when I turned on the television set and saw it all happening before my eyes. Work was crazy that day, we were glued to the radio, listening to everything as it happened, shocked, and in fear that it had happened at all. I also remember the point, while I was talking to a customer about it, about how most everyone in New York state knew someone that worked in those towers, or knew someone who knew someone, and realizing that I had two very dear friends that worked in those towers. I know that I am fortunate to know that they made it out, and are well today...but I feel for all the others who lost so much on that day. I also rememebr hearing others talking about the Arabs, and the Arab-Americans that live in the United States, and how many would feel sorry for what was to come for them, and that is when my own terror began, for my family's ethnic background is Arabic. I take care of my mother, and even though I live in a relatively small community, where everyone is friendly with everyone and everyone is welcomed with open arms into it, I felt fear go through me. I didn't know how people would react, if there would be those people in this small community, who would lash out anyone that was Arab, so at that point, I decided that I would remain quiet about many things, just for my own family's safety. Thankfully, nothing happened, but I don't think I've ever feared for my own life, as I did that day, while tears streamed down my face for the loss of so many. I tried once to explain it to a friend in Australia, how it felt, how it hurt, even more, how proud the people of New York are of their home...and our home...is all of New York. Not just the small towns, the big cities, or the farmlands where we live, but home to us - is all of the state. And all of the communities, the rich, the poor, gave and gave over and over....because it was home that was hurt, home that was destroyed on that fateful day. The one fateful day that all of us, The New Yorkers, and all of the world, will remember for the rest of time. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11th, 2001, I was getting ready to go to work as a Registered Nurse at Lutheran Medical Center. I had spoken to my husband who was in Penn. taking an antiterrorism course for the United States Army. After our usual I love you's and have a good day's, I left our apartment in Fort Hamilton and headed for work. It was a warm sept. morning and the day was progressing as usual. After doing my usual first rounds and checking on my patients and getting report, I proceeded to begin my assessments and administering some medications. One patient who was a federal prisoner had guards posted outside his door. They were listening to ear pieces and talking about the usual things they would talk about. Suddenly one stood up and stated that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. Being born and raised in Maine and newly moved to NY, I was not very familiar with the towers being north or south. In my niave mind I thought it was plausable that a "small" plane could have accidently hit a tower. As further news was obtained that another plane had hit the other tower, and it spread thoughout the hospital, it was like an air of electricity and disbelief surrounded everyone. Upon hearing of the tragedy everything stopped for a brief second , a second that felt like forever. As the event was declared a disaster we were informed we could not leave the hospital until more information was obtained as to how many victims would be brought to our hospital for trearment. With a mad dash we discharged patients who were stable enough and well enough to go home, in an attempt to make room for the many expected patients we would be recieving. In my own mind I kept thinking how my parents who lived in maine would be worrying. With my brother living in D.C. and my sister living in Long Island and myself in Brooklyn, I knew my parents had to be frantic. Especially after learning that a plane had also gone down at the Pentagon, I asked my boss if there was anyway to make a long distance call to maine. I told her it would only be a couple of minutes. She was able to arrange the call for me, God bless her soul. After a few minutes of trying to calm down my mother and let her know that I was all right, I quickly called my husband on his cell phone to make sure he was ok as I had just learned that a plane had also gone down in Pennsylvania. He was and had told me that they were in the middle of a class about terrorists when a picture of Bin Laden was up on the screen when they heard of the attacks. I told him I did not know when I would be able to leave work but i would try to call him when I had a chance. Trying to prepare for what might come kept us busy , although we never strayed too far from a tv. Watching the towers fall from the physical therapists window,is something I will never forget. I felt like I was in a dream , a very bad dream. I felt that what i was watching was not real, It couldn't be. When we were told we could not leave I felt a sense of relief, since at least at work I would have other people around and would not have to go home alone at a military base. What better target. When things began to quiet down a bit and it was becoming quite apparent that we would not be getting many victims, a sense of reality started to set in at the immense tragedy that had occurred. When we were finally allowed to leave the hospital, I knew I would not be getting much sleep that night. Although we lived only 3 miles form my work it took 45 minutes to get home after being stopped 4 times for security checks and finally making it to the gate. When at the gate the MP's who i knew and who new me were on a hightened state of security. Ironically, it was a relief when they had me step out so they could check my car. Finally making it to the apartment and taking a shower and trying to relax I couldn't help but sit and watch the news all night long. I felt that if I watched it enough it might some how make sense to me how some one could do this. To this day I still dont understand and know I never will. After speaking to my husband several times throughout the night and the next morning, he drove up and came to get me to take me back with him so he could finish his class. Somehow I felt that sitting in a hotel room so far away was better then being in the midst of things. After finally going back home and trying to get on with our lives, I will never forget the scenes I saw and will never forget the smell in the air that lingered for so long. If there is one good thing that come out of this tragedy its the way our country came together in such a time. I am very proud to be an American. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I went to work as normal and started my day at my desk like usual. Being in the Midwest we were one hour behind New York. At 8:00 my time I notice that the office was really quite. We had about 65 people in the squadron and its pretty noisy in the morning with people coming and going. This morning it was quiet. I got up and started wondering around and saw that all the desks were empty. I headed to the break room and found a lot of people standing around the TV set. I squeezed in the room and saw the first tower burning. I thought that this was an air accident and kept watching. Nobody moved to go back to their desk and just stood watching. Then the second plan came into view and we watched it live hit the second tower. We were absolutely glued to the TV. I went back to my desk and tried to call friends at the Pentagon to see if they knew anything. The number I was calling rang and rang and nobody answered. Someone finally picked up the phone and told me that the office was being evacuated and that the Pentagon had been hit. I rushed back to the break room with the news and people were telling me that this was serious and to stop joking around. Then it came out on TV that the Pentagon had been hit. We slowly started back to our desks but it was a really subdued office. We kept the TV going and every now and then someone would check to see what the latest news was. We were told that only military aircraft were flying. We saw the President make his speech from Barksdale Air Force Base and being a military unit we knew were had gone into a high posture of security readiness then usual. That afternoon while sitting at my desk I head planes roaring overhead. I got up and went out on to our third floor fire escape landing and saw coming down the runway a plane I recognized as Air Force One, the President's plane. People started coming to the windows and we watched all that was happening on the runway which was right across the street. We saw Air Force troops starting to be strategically placed along side the road near the runway. The President's plane circled and pulled up across the street. The first people out were the Secret Service guys in their black over coats and dark glasses. You could tell they were armed and meant business. Then we saaw the President get out and get into a limo and head for the Strategic Command Headquarters Building about a maile away. Later we watched the President give his second talk from the underground command post. Strategic Command is THE command that is the first defense of the United States. Its here that any kind of action would be initiated. Its the control center of all our military forces. I still can remember clearly, 5 years after, where I was, what happened and the rage, horror and sadness that was felt by both military and civilians assigned to Offutt Air Force Base on September 11, 2001. I was being called to get up by my mom at around 7:30 a.m. and i took a shower and i got dressed, made a lunch and just followed the regular routine. I had to be at my new school for 8:10 a.m. and then i would be starting my class with Mr. DiSaverio. I got the things i would need for the class and i rushed to class through the crowd. I got to my desk to see the St. Mary's Highschool logo on the anouncement t.v.(as usual)and at about 8:20a.m. the anouncements cam on. After they were done we sat down, the news channel came on (as usual)and my teacher turned the volume down. i looked up at the clock it was 8:49 then i looked up at the t.v. (which everyone tends to ignore except me) and i saw 1 of 2 really tall buildings burning and i was wondering what this was all about so i told another person to turn up the volume and he did. The whole school was watching the "World Trade Center" burn. i did not know what these buildings were at the time and what the point of them being built was or anything all i knew was that lots and people were trapped and that this was BAD. We kept watching CNN and then another plane hit the other tower. everyone freaked out and the teacher told us to be calm. we started to see people jumping from the burning towers and some of the teachers who were in the hall started to cry. The teachers were saying with a false state in there voice that they were sure that the F.D.N.Y. would be up there in no time and that they're going to save all of those people who were trapped and then the first tower collapsed. the principal came on the announcements and said "you are all asked to pray for our united nieghbor because of the terrible tradegy that is taking place" the teachers and people in my class were all wondering if they would be able to save the remaining tower and then all we heard was a roar and the other tower collapsed. my mother's day was cancelled at work because she is a stock trader and financial analyst and i was sent home with the rest of my classmates. this was 9/11 for me. I had just sent my child of to school and was cleaning around the house I had turned on the tv, I could not believe my eyes. The World Trade Center was on fire. Shortly after I watched in shock as the 2nd plane hit tower 2. Shortly after the phone rang. It was my mother in tears she wanted to make sure I was watching. I was, then yet another shock the Pentagon was hit by a plane also. Then yet on other shock the plane crash in Shanksville PA. This was getting a little to close to home for me and my family. I remember the unthinkable what next. What did we do as American citizens to deserve this. I immediately went to school and pulled my daughter Megan out. All I could do was hold her tight. That day had to be the hardest day for anyone to even grasp the concept of what was going on. My family and I are very grateful to all the men and women who have helped (and/or) lost their lives.
