Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was about to take my youngest daughter Jordan to school, when I switched the tv over to FoxNews. I saw the picture of the tower with the hole in it. I figured that a small plane had somehow crashed into the building. I took my daughter to school and came back home. My son, who was being homeschooled, said to me, when I walked in the door, "Mom, a plane has crashed into the building." I said,"Yeah, I know, we saw it before we left." And he said, "No, this is another plane that crashed into the other building." I was absolutely in shock! I called my husband, who had been listening to it on the radio. I just couldn't believe the image of that plane flying into that building! It is something I will never forget! After a while, they said that there was a fire at the Pentagon, then they said, "We have unconfirmed reports that a large plane has crashed into the Pentagon." I panicked, even being in a very small town here in Texas. I was so afraid! I wanted to go pick my kids up at school. Oh, one thing I forgot. When I came home and my son told me about the other plane crashing, I thought about the kids who might be getting to school late, and I thought that the teachers at the elem. school might not know what is going on. I called the school and talked to the secretary and she had not heard what had happened. She told the principle, who made an announcement that the teachers were to leave their tv's off because of what was going on in New York and Washington. Then, I heard about the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. My first thought was that the terrorists had crashed it on purpose because they knew they might not make it back to Washington. Only later did we all find out what the wonderful people on that plane did, fighting to take control of the plane, giving their lives to save maybe thousands of others. I was glued to the tv for weeks, and pretty much still am. I am so proud of President Bush and the way he has handled everything. He makes me very proud to be a Christian and a conservative. I will never forget the tears in his eyes because I could tell that they were real tears, and he really hurt for the people who died and their families. I then went on a hunt for a flag, and when I finally got one, I hung it out and it is still there. Not because it is the latest "fad", or because everyone else is doing it. I did it because I am so glad and thankful that I live in this wonderful country! Our lives will never be the same again because of 9/11, but in the midst of tragedy has come incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice, and I am also very proud of our military and the job they are doing. I pray that God will continue to bless this country and I hope that future generations to come will understand what it really means to be patriotic, and to be an American. Thank you! Tell us your story: I was at school when i first heard about the terrorist attacks I was in 2nd hour and me and my friend Whitney didn't really understand how serious the accident was because we were not exactly sure what the world trade center was. It was not until we changed classes that I saw what had happend exactly and understood that many peoople had lost their lives on that day and the United States of America would never be the same again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Dave Shultz, and my September 11 story occurred in some proximity to the Pentagon attack. I was working as a journalist in downtown Washington, D.C. We had a television set in our office, and I remember walking in and seeing dark smoke rolling out from what looked like a gash in the side of one of the towers. A colleague told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. My immediate thought was that the plane must've been a small private plane -- surely a larger craft would've been piloted by a professional, and much less likely to make such a mistake. I went to my desk, and wrote an e-mail to a friend, to see if he'd gotten any information on it. Meanwhile, I tried to log onto the Washingtonpost.com website, which was, at that time, unavailable, probably due to the number of "hits" on the site. As I was at my desk, I heard that another plane had hit, this time on the other tower. The first collision had seemed so unlikely that the second confirmed our suspicions that this couldn't be unlucky coincidence. At that time, word started circulating that there was actually a collection of airborne planes in a coordinated attack, with some headed for Washington. My first thought was to call my wife -- we'd only been married a few months -- and tell her to get home. She worked in Rosslyn, a business community across the Potomac River from Washington, and I didn't want her to be near the city, particularly as she was working in the very tall USA Today building. When I reached her (cell phones weren't working), she told me that her building was being evacuated. She wanted to meet me nearby, but I told her that I'd see her at home. I didn't know what the Washington Metro system would be like, but I guessed that it wouldn't be running (I didn't drive into work). I'd board it, and try to get as close to home as possible -- then I'd figure out what to do to get the rest of the way home. About this time, we heard that the Pentagon had been hit; this sealed it for us, and we all started talking about leaving. Our building was on 17th and K street, and it was showing on the t.v. screen as local newscasters set up in the city -- the feeling was that the White House or Congress might also be targets. As we're not very far from either site, I said my goodbyes and got on the Farragut North station, blue line, headed south across the river and into Alexandria, where we had an apartment in a high rise. The metro was crowded, but orderly -- people were unusually solicitous and polite. We didn't stop at the Pentagon stop, zoomed by it. I got off at Pentagon City, a large mall just south of the Pentagon. The mall was completely deserted. Walking through it, I felt like a character from "War of the Worlds," as though I were the only person left in the area. I walked out of the mall, into the empty parking lot, and smelled the smoke. Looking toward the Pentagon, I could see the cloud rising over the top of the I-395 overpass. A deputized somebody told me I couldn't linger there, that I had to get out of that area for security reasons. I called my wife, Sherry, who picked me up (we live about 10 minutes from the Pentagon). When we got home, it was about 11:15 a.m. I took off my shirt, got a drink, and walked out to the balcony. We live on the 16th floor of a building that overlooks the city. I could clearly see the smoke from the Pentagon; the Capitol dome was intact, and the Washington Monument and National Cathedral were visible (it was a gorgeous day). I don't recall if National Airport had stopped flights by that point, but in the weeks and months to come, that airport would be closed. We'd grown accustomed to sitting on the balcony and watching the flights queue up over the city -- no more. In addition, there was a notable blackness on that part of the Potomac river, as all the airport lights to which we'd become accusomed were now out. A flight of two fighter jets went over the city, something I'd not seen before. I remember thinking that Washington D.C. hadn't had smoke over it from aggressive attack since the War of 1812. It was a very odd, disturbing moment. The Pentagon smoked for several days afterward, and we could smell it acutely from the balcony. For several nights after the attack, other residents in the building pulled fire alarms, thinking the smoke they smelled came from our building. This may sound like an unusual concern, but being as our building is one of the few tall ones in the area south of the city, my concern was that a repeat attack may pick it to hit if for some reason they were unable to make it to the city. For weeks after the attack, I passed Humvees, APC vehicles and armed soldiers when going into work. I didn't know anyone killed in the attack, though a bar in Old Town Alexandria had a picture of a naval officer who died taped in the window for months afterward. Those words from the radio were the first signs of trouble I heard on my way to school that morning. The events of September 11 have no doubt changed the lives of many around the world; though I have not been directly affected by the attacks as others have, my sympathy still goes out to anyone who has suffered since that memorable day. But maybe I don't deserve to be sympathizing or mourning for others, for I have not lost as much as victim's families have. I might be too young and naive to really feel the whole extent of what the events on the eleventh have produced. I don't feel the "unity" that has apparantly been brought out by the attacks, and I certainly have not felt the need to display a flag anywhere for the world to see. No, I prefer my own method of patriotism. I think what I have tried to do most since last September is try to understand the situation better. But I found that difficult to do with masses of red, white, and blue being hurled at me for the couple of weeks following the eleventh. It wasn't that I opposed of the way others were showing their feelings, I just wanted people to respect the way I chose cope with mine--though I'm still not positive what my feelings are. Being on the west coast might be numbing me from reality; or perhaps it's all the movies and shows I've seen depicting similar events. Whatever it is, I know that some day I will really know what my position is on the attacks and the after math. The unity that has apparantly held America together this past year is something I expected, and I am thankful that ignorant acts of the Pearl Harbor aftermath have not taken place. However, I know I am still the same person as I was before and I will continue to be. Many people have told me that they have discovered themselves more because of the attacks, but I just feel like I'm the same person, living the same life. I guess someone could be reading this and thinking either that I'm lucky, or just arrogant and unsensitive. In my mind, I'm just lucky, and maybe naive, because if anything like that events that took place on September 11 occur again, I know they have the potential to affect me much greater than this event has. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember waking up around 6:30 am. Around 6:45 AM I went into the living room to look for my shoes. I have a really bad habit of leaving things where they don't belong. When I got into the living room my dad was watching the news, which is not unusual in our house. I noticed that something was happening so I asked him what was happening and he said that a plane had just hit one of the world trade center towers. I asked him if it was an accident and he said no one knew if it was an accident or not because no one knew a whole lot of information. A short time later, we saw the second plane hit the second tower, I remember saying "this is not an accident". My dad then said "definitely not". When my younger sister and I arrived at school a short time later around 7:30 AM we immediately went over to the student center to look for our friends, we found them watching tv in the main cafeteria we asked them if anything else had happened to which they responded that there was another hijacked plane out there somewhere. So we sat down and we all watched the news together. While we were watching in the cafeteria the first tower collapsed. Followed by the second one a short time later. None of us spoke a single word as we watched the news, it was so silent. I don't think any of us went to our classes that day. My friend called and told me to turn on the tv because the world was coming to an end. I told her..."Stop playing! Girl I am tired and I need to go back to sleep". She told me to turn on the tv because NY (our home) was in serious trouble. I turned on the tv and to my horror. I saw the first tower in smoke with a huge hole. At that time no one knew what really happened until the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower and still at that time, I had no clue as to what was going on. All I can remember is that the next thing I knew, the screen was completely bogged with smoke. I told my friend "There better be a building there" and when the smoke cleared we both screamed and so did every other girl on my floor. Just watching that and listening to the reporters of the morning show cry as they told what was going was the worst thing I have ever heard on television!! I hung up and ran as quickly as possible to my friends' room and watched 2nd tower fall and we cried and cried. I feared for my mother and sisters who all work in Manhattan. My sisters didn't go to work that day because one was sick and the others son was sick. My mother, however, did go to work and she made it out of Manhattan safely and sound. My father at the time was NYPD and after getting phone calls all day from my boyfriend and friends asking me if I had heard from him, I was prepared to receive the worst news possible because I could not get through to him since he was actually out there helping but in the end, he was safe as well. A friend of mine at school wasn't as lucky as I was to hear about my father....Her father, a NYC Firefighter, never made it out of the building alive. It was the worst day of all for Americans and it was a day that will always haunt our memories!! RIP to those heroes and those who lost their lives to that infamous day of infamy!! ONE!!! Tell us your story: On September 11,2001 I was at school in an art class when a teacher from one of the other classrooms came and told our teacher that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center towers.Our class interested and shocked at what we had just heard had the teacher turn the television on so that we could see just what had happened.When the news footage appeared we could see that the first tower was on fire and the secon was still standing.Just a while later our eyes still set on the television cought a glimpse of a second jet liner crashing into the other tower.After seeing these images we knew that this was no accident and that someone was attacking us.Soon after this the bell rang and we were dismissed to our next class as if nothing had happened but the images we saw left everyone talking and wondering.The very end of the school day our last period teacher instead of avoiding talking about what had happened we talked about it getting the facts straight.When I finally returned home,that nigt we all sat in silence an wondered who was behind all the chaos. Tell us your story: I was on my tea break in the Police Canteen; remember we are five hours ahead of you in the UK, so it was early afternoon for us when the planes hit the Towers. I was sitting in front of the television, mug of tea in hand, waiting to watch the afternoon local news before returning to my desk where I worked as a Race Liaison Officer. I deal with victims of Race crimes and incidents and it soon would become apparent that my role would never before be more needed than it was now. The backlash that would surely follow such a horrific attack would drag down the innocent along with the guilty. I sat in my wheelchair and for a few seconds was bewildered as to why I was looking at a New York landscape rather than a Sussex one. However I soon realised why. I watched in horrified fascination as live pictures were beamed over to our side of the Atlantic. We were watching everything in real-time. It hadn't already happened, it WAS happening RIGHT now. I remember thinking numbly, "there's so much smoke, so much smoke, it looks like Smog, I wonder how many people are trapped?...oh my God there's another plane, sweet mother of Jesus, it's going for the other Tower, oh bloody hell, I can't look! I can't look!" But I did look, I didn't even close my eyes, I just looked and looked and looked until my eyes hurt. One of my colleague's came from my office came looking for me as I was late returning to my desk. He hadn't heard the news. I was one of the first people in Brighton Police Station to be aware of what had just taken place. He put his hand on my shoulder and said. "What's happening kid?" I told him and he stared at the television for a couple of minutes and then said. "We better tell the DI (Detective Inspector), I think this will affect everyone, not just the US." I nodded my head. In those first brief few minutes of death and destruction our lives in the UK had changed. And it would never be the same again... Tell us your story: I am a stay at home mom and my daughter,Lauryn Alexis Medlin,was born on June 6th,2001.She was only 3 months old when this senseless act occurred.I vividly remember I was sitting on the floor,watching a New York news channel,waiting for the talk shows to come on.I was playing with Lauryn,laughing at her silly expressions and coos when I looked up at the T.V. and saw smoke coming out of the WTC.I stopped everything and turned the volume up so I could hear what happened.At that time they thought it was a private plane and I thought it was an accident.I was glued,praying that no one was hurt inside......at 21 years of age I lost my first husband as a result of a horrific car accident that left me and my first born,my son,C.J.,alone and lost.So I was already emotional about the "accident".Then,I noticed the other plane flying in the cameras view.I was frozen in place as that plane hit the second tower.I grabbed Lauryn,held her tight and cried as hard as I think a human can.I tried to understand "Why" this happened and if it was going to happen closer to home,as we live close to Fort Bragg.I called all of my family to tell them I loved them and battled with my emotions for a long time.My sister in law left school to come here and be with me and Lauryn,and we just cried together. To this day,September 11th is etched in my mind and I often hope that the survivors and the families that were torn apart are coming to grips with the reality and are able to move on.I know it is hard to go on without someone that was a huge part of your life but always know,they love you and are always watching over you and your family. The first thing I saw was the twin towers with one of the towers bellowing smoke out of its side. I was apuled at what I saw. My teacher had to turn off the television so we could finish the remander of out testing. When I went to my next class a while later she (teacher) had the tv on and I saw that the second tower has been hit by another hijacked plane. Like two seconds after I saw that the second tower got hit I remembered my cousin was due home today and her plane left earlier that morning. I was so scared! All day our school tuned in to see what new information could possibly come up. It was the only day that every single one of our classmates would not say a word at all not even at lunch. All our faces had the same blank expression like we were all still shocked and trying to see if this all really happened. As soon as I could I called my mother to see weather or not she has been able to get a hole of my cousin. The next day I was filled with tears of joy when I saw my cousin's car pull up in my drive way. For the rest of the day we sat at my house and watched the news to see how many people they could save. My cousin was telling me how one of the planes that crased in the tower was the same plane that docked at the same aport as she did .She said she talked to some of its passengers. She told me that this women told her all about her family. Her hushband and three kids. As she was talking to me I saw her eyes fill with tears thinking about those poor people who died. Tell us your story: Looking for the 'safe' PBS channels for my pre-schooler, I came across the image of smoke billowing from one of the twin towers. I heard them say it was a plane that had crashed into it and they were discussing the possibility that it was planned! Then, before my eyes, the second plane hit the other tower. Then, I knew for sure, it was no accident. I remember thinking how removed and helpless I felt. But the true horror and total disbelief came as the day unfolded and the towers fell. I still can't believe how humans can do such things to each other. As if that wasn't enough, I soon learned that children I know lost a parent because of this senseless act. We were in total shock. The news continued to get bad. My mother was told that her chemo was not working and that we needed to choose another method to cure her cancer. Twelve days later, my mother passed away in her sleep. The cancer did not kill her, her heart just gave out. I didn't lose anyone I knew on September 11th, but the days, weeks and months that followed I lost my mother, mother-in-law and Aunt. I can only imagine what the families who lost their loved ones on this day felt. What a great loss. Samuel Walker Historian, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission March 15, 2002 I began the morning of September 11, 2002 in Davidson, NC. It was the third day of a research trip I had undertaken to conduct oral histories and collect documents relating to a book I was writing on the Three Mile Island nuclear plant accident of 1979. After doing an extensive interview in Knoxville, TN on September 9 and 10, I had driven in my rental car to Davidson to visit my son, a student at Davidson College. I awoke early on the morning of September 11 because I was driving to Aiken, SC to conduct another oral history and then to Atlanta to do research at the Jimmy Carter Library. My plan was to make it to Aiken by lunch time and then to Atlanta in time to see a baseball game between the Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies, for which I had purchased a ticket some weeks earlier. I looked forward to seeing the game because I had a great seat and the two teams were competing for a berth in the playoffs. The morning started off routinely enough. As soon as I got on I-77 north of Charlotte at about 7 a.m. to head for Aiken, I hit a huge traffic jam. I felt right at home; I live in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and this was just like my daily commute on the beltway. When I finally made it through Charlotte, conditions improved greatly. As I drove south through and beyond Columbia, SC, I found little traffic, and to my annoyance, no radio stations that I cared to listen to. So I turned off the radio and cruised silently through sparsely populated south-central South Carolina. When I got bored enough, I decided to try to radio again to see I could find something that interested me. As soon as I turned on the radio and heard the tone of the announcer?s voice I knew that something was dreadfully wrong. A woman (I think) was announcing that President Bush had been informed and had left the school he was visiting in Florida. Informed of what, I wondered? I soon found out when the station switched to reporters in New York who were describing the attacks on the World Trade Center. Information was sparse at that point, but it seemed clear that planes had deliberately crashed into the towers. Within a short time (I have no clear recollection of the exact times), I listened with horror to the live account of the collapse of the first tower. As I tried to assimilate this information, the station switched to the news from Washington. The sequence of events is vague in my mind?I might have heard about the attack on the Pentagon first. But the anxiety and incredulity I felt are still very vivid. With heart racing, I tried to call my wife, who works in downtown Washington, from a gas station, but of course I could not get through. So here I was in the middle of nowhere, worried and helpless, with nothing to do but drive on. As I neared Aiken at about 11 a.m., I called John Austin, the subject of my oral history. We agreed to go ahead with our plans, and I drove to his house in the lovely and, at that point starkly serene, town of Aiken. From his house I was able to get through to my wife, who had had a long but uneventful trip home on the subway. She had also talked to our children and other members of my family. At that point I felt reassured about the safety of my family. The horror of the events was still difficult to fathom, however, especially after seeing films of the attacks on the towers for the first time on John?s television. John, his wife Paula, and I had lunch at a restaurant in Aiken. We talked about Three Mile Island, which had taken on somewhat less urgency in my mind over the previous couple of hours. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant and welcome interlude, and I learned some things that were useful additions to the research for my book. Then I hit the road (namely I-20) for Atlanta. Once again, I traveled though lightly populated regions, and to my frustration, sometimes had trouble finding radio stations that carried news about the attacks. I did learn, however, that the Braves? game would not be played. This came as a relief because I wasn?t sure that I wanted to sit in a crowded stadium that evening, even in a great seat. Perhaps especially in a great seat. I spent the evening of Sept. 11 watching televison in my hotel room. I wasn?t at all certain that the Carter Library would be open the next day and I was increasingly uncertain that I would be able to fly home from Atlanta on Sept. 13, as I had planned. The following morning Atlanta seemed amazingly normal, which was a source of considerable comfort. The Carter Library opened on schedule, and the staff, who did not realize that I was on an extended trip, was surprised to see me. They had assumed that I was coming from home and would be unable to fly to Atlanta. It was not, to put it mildly, a busy day at the Library?I was the only researcher in the reading room. The service I received from the staff archivists exceeded even their usual high standards, and I found documents on Three Mile Island that were of interest and value. As I watched the news in my room that evening, the impact of the attacks hit close to home. The television networks ran streamers that listed the names and home towns of the victims, and I was unpleasantly jolted to see that the list included a family from my home town of University Park, Maryland. University Park is a small and close-knit community, and although I did not know the family personally, it was shocking to see their names. Charles Falkenberg, his wife Leslie Whittington, and their daughters Zoe, 8, and Dana, 3, were aboard the plane that was flown into the Pentagon. Whittington was a professor at Georgetown University, and she and her family were on their way to Australia as a part of a sabbatical leave. They had taken off from Dulles airport for what was surely a much-anticipated adventure on the other side of the world. They got only as far as the Pentagon, and the thought that haunted me was that I hoped those two little girls did not understand what was happening. The thought that angered me was that the terrorists boarded the plane with that family, and other families, fully intending to murder them. On the evening of Sept. 12, it was still uncertain when the Atlanta airport, like all other airports, would re-open. I decided it was better to drive home than to wait to see if the airport would be open in the morning. I called Avis, from whom I rented my car, to explain my situation. To the company?s credit, the Avis representative told me without hesitation that this was a national emergency and I was welcome to drop off my car any place that was convenient. The following morning I left my hotel at 6 a.m., and drove for twelve hours to my office in Rockville, Maryland. It was a source of considerable relief to find that the 18-story building in which I worked was still standing. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: MY HUSBAND AND I WERE GETTING READY TO LEAVE FOR THE MORNING AND I HAD CNN ON. I HEARD THAT A PLANE HAD HIT ONE OF THE WORLD TRADE BUILDINGS AND AS I WAS WATCHING IT ON TV, I SAW ANOTHER PLANE CIRCLING THE TOWER. I THOUGHT TO MYSELF, "THAT PLANE SHOULDN'T BE THERE." I THOUGHT IT JUST WANTED TO GET A CLOSER LOOK AT WHAT HAD HAPPENED MINUTES BEFORE. WELL, I WAS SO WRONG. AS I WAS WATCHING THE TV, I SAW THE SECOND PLACE CRASH INTO THE SECOND TOWER AND I WAS SO UPSET BECAUSE I THOUGHT OF THE MANY FAMILIES THAT WOULD NEVER SEE THEIR LOVED ONES AGAIN. I DIDN'T KNOW ANYONE PERSONALLY, BUT MANY OF OUR SOUTH CAROLINA FIRE FIGHTERS WENT TO NEW YORK WITH NO QUESTIONS ASK. THAT IS A TRUE AMERICAN.
