<text>First, I'd like to send my condolences to all the families that lost their loved ones on 9/11/01. We all must pray long and with great seriousness so we can bring these terrorist to justice. We must not be angry so our judgement won't be false. We must stay focused on catching all the terrorists that caused this senseless distruction, and the loss of thousands of innocent lives. May God have mercy on the souls of the terrorists, because no one else will. They will have to face God and if they think for one minute that what they did was Ok because it was in the name of God, they are sadly mistaken. Terrorists are murderers, and they must be punished for their crimes.

On that sad day of 9/11/01, I was at home and my bestfriend called me up speaking very fast and crying. I was able to understand which channel she said to put on. I just missed the first tower being hit. Then when I saw the second tower being hit and I was in shock. It was like watching a movie. But it was VERY REAL. Then I felt that this was intentional. Not sure by whom, but I was guessing terrorits. My bestfriend and I were crying for most of that day. We stayed on the phone for hours (we both have call-waiting)just watching the TV at the same time, and changing channels to see what the other networks were showing. I had just moved to Richmond, VA. August of 2001 and I lived only 6 minutes away from the Pentagon. Thank you God that I moved when I did. I used the route that passed in front of the Pentagon all the time. Soon after 9/11 I had to go to Alexandria, VA. and I passed in front of the Pentagon and I just cried and cried. It looked like a war zone. I just can't imagine what all those people went through, be it in the plane or in the Pentagon. America is strong, stable, and full of brave men and women. We will not back down to those or any other terrorists from any country on this Planet. God Bless America. </text>

<text>Hardin Simmons University was inaugarating a new President. We had the day off from class so everyone could attend the ceremonies. Mr roomoate had to get up early to pick up his uncle at the airport because he was on the Board of the Trustees and had flown his private plane in from the Metroplex. When my roommate got back he told me about the airliners flying into the towers and that all flights had been grounded. His uncle had made it here. We turned on the TV as I continued to get dressed and had to leave just after the towers collapsed. I was in complete shock and thought I was watching a movie.
I have a best friend back home that works for the Attorney General in New Mexico. I called him to see if he knew but he did not answer his cell phone. I left a message giving a basic summary of the planes and then the towers collapsing and hung up. Later he told me that he got the message soon afterward and a few moments later his mom called. He thought I was joking but when his mom said the exact same thing he was also astonished.
Since classes were cancelled I stayed close to the TV and watched every update and the events of the rest of the day.

<text>I was on my way to Famous Anthonys to pick up breakfast for our company. I was listening to the radio and talking to the girl that was with me. When suddenly the DJ Melissa Morgan came across the air and said that a plane had just crashed into the WTC. Me and the other girl were shocked and trying to figure out what was going on. I thought that it may have been an idividual airplane that had gotten off course and maybe lost control or something. The other girl thought the same. We got our breakfast and on the way back to the office we heard that a second plane had hit the other tower. We then knew that something was up. We got back tot he office and everyone was in the Kitchen watching the local news channel. No one could say anything we were all just in shock. I couldn't believe this was happening to us to the United States and mostly to the innocent people who were just living their day to day lives. When I found out definatly that this an intentional act I cried. To me how could someone be so angry and so irrational to do something like this. And then to know that they were our planes that were used to do this horrible deed is just unbearable. I thanked GOD that day that not a single member of my family was in any of those planes or buildings that day. And to those families that were my heart, sympathy, prayers & love goes out to you. I can't say that I know what it was like to loose someone you truly love and care about in that terror attack. But I can understand the confusion & devastation, and the feeling that this horrible thing has happened and there is nothing you can do about, feeling like the smallest person in the whole world. And asking myself what have you done to still be here? Waht have you done to be spared? Why wasn't it me in one of those buildings that were destroyed? Well all that I had to comfort me that day, watching all of this unfold before my eyes, was that GOD has a plan and this is all in his plan. All you can do is try to understand that without suffering there would be no compassion in the world that we live in today. My prayers and love are with those who will never have a family member or friend come home to you. God bless you all!! </text>

<text>I sat home on Sept 11, 2001 because it is the time of year when I take my vacation. My birthday is September 6th, my 3 year wedding anniversary was Sept 5th and I was messing around in the house doing little odd jobs. The phone rang about 8:55...it was my brother-in-law asking me if I was watching the news...of course I wasn't, I had long since finished watching the local news and had moved on the one of my favorite shows "I Love Lucy". He asked me to sit down in front of the TV and turn on a local station...he said any one of them would be fine....I punched channel 5 on the remote and was immediately shocked into silence. I sat there holding the phone, unable to speak, glued to the awful sights that were being broadcast on national TV. I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself as the tears begin to fall for the people who would loose their lives that day. And we sat there together...him listening to his news station and me to mine...and together we watched the second plane crash into the other tower. Now he was at work at UNC hospitals....people were frantic, they were crying and I could h ear them in the background with much the same expressions that I was having. Oh, my God?!!! What in the world is going on. It took a while before we heard them saying it was an attack, and then we heard the awful news...there was another plane that appeared to be hi-jacked...and then another. It was too crazy to think about...I eventually had to hang up from breathing over the phone line with him because my call-waiting was clicking off the hook. My sister-in-law, my 2 best friends, my mother, my grandma...all of us calling each other to say how much we loved them, to check on there where-abouts, to make sure we were all safe. And then I went crazy...well almost crazy...as I tried for hour after hour to get someone in my husbands family on the phone. His grandma, 3 aunts and a host of other relatives lived in Brooklyn...I wanted to ensure that they all were safe. But the lines were busy, or fast busy indicating they were disconnected, and the "all circuts are busy" was just about to drive me insane. Finally, I think my mother-in-law called to say she had spoken with her mother and sister and they were all ok, but it was chaos in the city! And after all of that died down, and the plane crashed into the Pentagon, and the other one was forced down in that field in Philadelphia...well, what else could I do. I sat in my floor and cried, I prayed for all the lives that were touched by this tragedy, I prayed hard and long for the evil folks who thought this was a great idea. I cried because I wanted to do something, I cried because I felt like I coudln't do anything. I called everyone I could think of and who's numbers Iknew by heart, just to say I loved them. And the worse the pictures got on the TV, the tighter I stayed glued to it...because there was nothing else I felt like I could do from my little-bitty-what-I- thought-was-safe-home in Chapel Hill North Carolina. Because quickly you realize how easily it could have been me. And for days, weeks even, after this, every time I heard a plane or helicopter in the sky, I thought for sure it was crashing into something near me, dropping a bomb or something else devastating. But what was even more scary was the hours and days right after the attack when the skies were silent..almost as if it were a permenant moment of silence.</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="89682">
<text>My husband, myself and our two children (Samantha, 6 and Joshua, 4) were en route to Rockford, IL where we were relocating. We were moving from New Orleans, LA. My husband had lost his job in April of 2000, had found a position in Rockford and we had pulled up very deep roots to move across the country to a place that I knew nothing about. I was born and raised in New Orleans and had never lived anywhere else in my life! My husband is actually from the Peoria area so, in a sense, this was like coming home for him. We had left New Orleans the day before at about 6:00pm. It took a long time to get the moving van loaded up. We drove a few hours and stopped in Jackson, MS on the evening of the 10th. We got up a little later than we wanted to on the 11th. We got our bags ready, checked out of the hotel and made our way to McDonald's for breakfast. I was travelling in my car with Samantha, Joshua, Gracie (our toy poodle) and Sandy (our cat). My husband was transporting the fish from our fish tanks. He had a battery-powered pump to keep the water aerated for the fish-filled water in 2 Home Depot buckets (he was quite proud of his design). We could not leave the things in the car so we took turns eating breakfast. He took the the kids in to eat first while I sat in the car with Gracie and Sandy. When they were done I went in for my turn. I remember sitting at the table eating my egg mcmuffin and thinking it was the first time I'd ever seen a TV in a McDonald's. I saw the side of the screen and it looked like a news program like the Today show or any kind of morning show. I didn't pay much attention. I was moving my entire life across the country and couldn't be bothered with celebrity interviews and cooking demonstrations. The customers in the restaurant were being drawn to the TV in and unusual manner. It occurred as odd to me, but I still didn't see any need to pay attention to the TV. I finished my breakfast, threw away my trash and headed out to the car. As I walked out of the restaurant, I noticed President Bush on the TV making his way to a podium. Still I ignored the TV. We loaded up the cars and got on the road. I couldn't shake the image of the president walking to the podium. Why was he on TV? Was there something wrong somewhere? I turned on the radio and heard the frightening news: An airliner filled with people had flown into the towers of the World Trade Center in the heart of New York City. Unable to believe what I'd heard, I continued listening for someone to give some kind of clue that this was a joke. A sick joke! But all I heard were more terrifying details of still more frightening occurrences. Another airliner had crashed into the Pentagon and there was another airliner that had crashed somewhere in Pennsylvania. I started to cry. My shoulders shook with bewildered sobs. "What's the matter, Mommy?" My daughter stopped playing with her brother to find out why I was crying in a way that she rarely saw. I didn't know what to say. So I told her.
"An airplane crashed into a big building in New York City and killed a lot of people."
That was all I could say that she could probably understand. She was silent. As I listened to the radio further the theory was more and more evident that this had been no accident.
"Some bad people had flown the airplanes into the buildings on purpose to scare all of the people in our country."
This is what I ended up telling her that day. I don't know if she really understood this, but I think she did. Later in the day (which was the most surreal day of my life) we tried to stop for gas and were greeted with a line of cars waiting to pump gas that stretched all the way down the street. I hadn't seen anything like this since the 70's!! It scared me. I started thinking about where we were going to end up. What was this day going to mean to the rest of the country? Wall Street was closed. All kinds of financial things were going on. Were we going to be able to close on our beautiful new house? Were we going to have a place to live when we got to Rockford? I wanted to be home with my dad and sister where I knew things were safe. It felt like a front line in a war out here. I just couldn't fathom what the families of all the people who perished as a result of all this insanity were going through. It hurt to think about it. But we pressed on. I listened to the president when he said that we must keep on with everyday life. We must not let this beat us or have it interfere with what we hold dear. This is not to say that it won't affect us. It affects us every day since that tragic day. But I think his message of (which I interepreted as) perseverance was brilliant advice. I think it kept our country from becoming a victim.

We were able to close on our house and our transition from New Orleans to Rockford has been relatively smooth. I pray for the families who were touched by this tragedy by losing their loved ones.

God Bless us all and God Bless our great country.</text>

<text>When I heard that the first plane hit the WTC I was shocked and wondering who would do such a thing to people that didn't deserve it. When the second plane hit my doctor told me and my parents. I just took a minute to think about how the people were reacting and wondering if any of there family members or friends were hurt. Later on in the day another air plane hit the middle of the Pentigon, alot of people were seriously injured. Another plane was heading for Washiton D.C but the passengers knew they were gonna get hurt in some way, So who ever had a cell phone called an told there family what was happening. Terriorist have taken over the plane and that they will fight with the terrioists to try an take the plane down so they wouldnt hurt any more innocient people, They did take it down in a field. Still a lot of innocent people were died, but they risked there lives to save others. I think only one good thing came out of the 9/11/01 attacks. That is people realize how fortunate they really are to be an American. No matter how hard terrorist. try they will not get the victory. Sence the attacks people that didnt even know each other have been closer to every one in America then they were before. All I have to say is "United we stand Divided we fall."</text>

<text> I was a sophomore in high school and the day began so bright and pretty, but when i arrived at secoind block my teacher had the television on and she was sitting in pure shock. At that time I didn't really understand what the circumstances were, but then she had told me that one the the Twin Towers had been hit by a plane. I turn and looked at the screen again, and it appear to be a action movie to me. I could not bring myself to believe that American sould be attack in such away. We sat in class and watched the images of the first plane hitting one of the towers and as the next two planes flew into the Pentagon and the second tower. I watched in total disbelief and horror. Then only seconds later one of my best friends got a phone call from her family. They told her that her cousin who worked in the Pentagon was there during the attack and that they had not got in contact with him. She was hysterical, and after that we took a minute out of class to pray silently to ourselves. I walked around the whole day trying to convince myself that nothing thi horrible could ever happen in the USA, but unfortunately it did. When I got out of school, there was a pile of cars at ever gas station for miles and miles. I wasn't worried about the gas or anything. I just wanted to be never my family for encouragement and strength.I don't ever think that I will forget my sophomore year in high school for two reason: I never thought that anything like Sept. 11th would happen in my life time; and I could never be more proud of how my country pulled together in strength and courage. I think that these are the qualities most Americans are made of, not to say that the USA is perfect, but on that day and forever more I would want to live in any other country on earth.

Also after that I had never seen so many people loose their jobs, but to sum my opinion up, "He will never put more on us than we can bear" and that is just how i feel and I don't think that my opinion will efer change.

<text>I can't remember what class I was in but I do remember that every class I went to that day we watched it on the tv. When I first saw it on the tv I was in shock. I couldn't beleive that the twin towers had be under attack. That I was watching something that was live: happening at that moment. I almost started crying when I heard that people were jumping out of the towers or falling out and that a lot of people didn't make it out. I felt really bad for their families. I started praying for the people who were still in the building that they make it out ok and for the families who will soon find out or get a call that someone that they loved was in there and didn't make it out. The memory of the two towers falling stands out in mind. Its what I remeber the clearest. Just sitting there not breathing and a blank face. Kids around me with the same expression while some laugh under their breath to where the teacher can't hear them. When I heard them I turned around and said "This is a serious time rigth now, not just for the people in at the scene but for everybody b/c it effect us in ways you might not see yet." They just laughed. It hurt to see that some people didn't take it serious or at least show some kind of respect for what was happening. Things(attacks) like this just show how quickly our lives can change in an instant. How we should always try to live our lives to the fullest. </text>

After that I went to my friends and we talked about it. I felt really bad because I knew that a lot of people died either in the building or trying to save people. I remember in homeroom when our principal came in and talked to us about it. He said that he was watching the morning news when it came on. Later, in P.E. we all got together and had a moment of silence. When I got home my mom and I watched the news. This is my story of the Sept.11.

The plans were to leave on September 11th after having breakfast in the Top of the World restaurant in the WTC. My sister-in-law had a strange feeling to leave right away and skip breakfast there. They left on an earlier plane not knowing what was going on until the pilot announced that there had been an emergency and they had to land in Lincoln, Nebraska. When they got off the plane and were taken to a Red Cross shelter the TV was on and they saw what was happening. Both of them were in total shock but very grateful because had it not been for that feeling to leave right away they would have been in the WTC when the plane hit.</text>

<text>A year ago, I remember what was my first reaction that sunny day. I remember like yesterday because it was a beautiful sunny morning when all of a sudden I heard the noise, the commotion, the screaming, the fire, the sirens, the smoke, the people, and then the worst happen I saw the towers fall one by one. The devil arose within the smoke caused by the fire. I saw him there and I panic and ran to my shelter. I ran to the house of the Lord that was my first reaction. I looked for the Lord's comfort. I pray forgiveness for all human beings especially for those who did wrong and for the innocent ones.

I prayed and thank GOD that my little angel still had her mommy to explain what happen. The hardest thing I ever had to do as a mother was explain to a 4 year old what had happened. My daughter has not forgotten that day and I will always remember my first reaction.

The cycle of life is interesting my mother took me there when I was 8 years old because she worked there and then as an adult I took my daughter there.

Life must go on and remember every day is a good day to tell those closest to you that you love them. I love you all and I thank you for being in my life as my family, brothers, sisters, friends, coworkers, and bosses .

            <elementText elementTextId="89358">
<text>I was living at 71 Broadway on the fourth floor with windows that faced north onto the churchyard of Trinity Church and the World Trade Center beyond. Both towers were visible from the bedroom and living room.

My girlfriend and I had moved into the apartment at 4:00 P.M. on September 10, 2001. We had moved from 275 Greenwich Street, which is two blocks north of where the North Tower stood. The night of September 10th, I looked out the window at the two huge towers and wondered how long they would stay up (everything in New York gets torn down eventually and I had always thought they were ugly) and how in the world you would go about tearing down two 110-story buildings. It was just a coincidence, but a sad one.

At 8:46 I was getting dressed for work when I heard a sound like a missile and then a loud thud. The thud sounded like a large truck going over one of the steel plates that cover repair work on the city streets. In fact, it sounded so similar and I have lived in New York for so long (my whole life) that I almost didn't turn to look out the window. In fact, my first instinct was to look up Broadway, towards City Hall, where I saw nothing. When I turned my head left, however, I saw a waterfall of paper streaming out of the side of the north tower. My first thought was that a small plane had hit, but I was suspicious that it was an attack because of the missile-like sound that I now know was the engines of a passenger jet.

I ran downstairs and stood at the corner of Liberty Street and Church Street, at the southeast corner of the plaza that held the two towers. Papers were fluttering everywhere. It's something you don't really see on the television footage of the attacks; I don't know why. I picked up several pieces of paper, a bill, some information on employee insurance, some trading tickets and imagined that the people attached to these papers had been sitting a their desks one moment and then killed instantly the next.

As I watched amidst the growing chorus of fire trucks and ambulances, I was startled by a very loud noise to my left. I looked up and very clearly saw the profile of a passenger jet plow cleanly into the side of the south tower. Although the footage clearly shows a huge fireball, I have no recollection of the explosion. I distinctly remember thinking that the attackers must have stolen the jets out of hangars somewhere (Dallas sprang to mind, I don't know why) and flown them empty. At that point I had no idea that anybody was on the plane I had just seen.

The crowd I was in turned as one and fled to the basement of the Trinity Building, directly across from Liberty Plaza. In the basement there was the sound of some muted whimpering and weeping. I was surprised at how calm I felt. I immediately decided that I had to get back to my apartment and found my way through the basement and out onto Broadway. I got back into my apartment at about 9:10.

In retrospect, we know that no more flights would crash on New York, but at the time I was concerned that planes were going to start raining down from the sky at any minute. I turned on the news and discovered for the first time that the planes had been hijacked and that I had just watched a group of passengers meet their death. I felt disgusted, like an voyeur or Peeping Tom who had no right to witness the intimate moment of their death.

I called my parents, who live in Manhattan, and assured them I was okay. I paged my girlfriend, who was an emergency room doctor at Bellevue, and told her I was okay. As I was speaking with her, I watched bits and pieces of the tower fall. I didn't tell her, but I also saw bodies fall. I remember one in particular who fell backwards and I could see the arms flailing. Unlike the the debris, which was mostly exterior panels that fluttered on the way down, the jumpers fell straight to earth. At the time, I tried to convince myself that they couldn't be people; they were just metal. But I knew they were people.

As I hung up the phone, I said to my girlfriend, "There are bigger pieces falling down now." After the jumpers, I didn't want to watch any more, so I focused on the television. Suddenly, I felt foolish watching the event second hand when it was all happening outside my window. I looked up at the south tower. The light and shadow on the east face suddenly changed and I realized that the top was collapsing. Looking at the footage later confirmed my impression of the time; the top of the tower initially started falling east and a little south - directly at my apartment building. The tower was something like 1,300 feet tall. I was not certain that I lived over 1,300 feet from the south tower. In panic, I did something so pathetic it is laughable; I closed my living room window.

Then I ran into the hallway outside the apartment and waited for what I thought would be the impact of the south tower of the World Trade Center on my building. I did mental calculations. My building was decked in stone, having been built near the turn of the century. Would it hold up against a skyscraper falling. I heard screams throughout the building, muted by the apartment doors and the huge rumble outside.

Of course, nothing ever hit. I later learned that the tower simply slid down on itself, but standing in that hallway I was convinced that I might die there or be trapped and injured.

I had locked myself out of my apartment so I took the stairs down to the lobby.

The glass doors facing Broadway revealed nothing. It was like looking into a filthy fish tank. People from the street started coming into the lobby covered with soot. We stayed this way for what seemed like an eternity but was probably only twenty minutes. A woman next to me sat on the floor and sobbed.

A police officer in a uniform of blue trousers and a pristine white shirt suddenly appeared in the lobby. I have no idea how this officer was not covered in soot. I can't even remember if it was a man or a woman. The officer told us that the other tower was going to fall and that we all needed to get as far away from the tower as possible. There was some confusion as to which way that was (a lot of people had run into the lobby and didn't know where they were). I knew that exact opposite direction of the towers was down Broadway towards South Ferry and Battery Park. So I showed some people the way out of our building through the subway exit (which is in the lobby) and we made our way out onto Broadway and headed south.

The soot was already about three or four inches thick on the ground and it was very difficult to see or breathe. None of us knew if the second tower had fallen. I headed south to Bowling Green and then towards Battery Park with the idea that I could breathe more easily if I could get to the shore of the harbor. At the very bottom of Broadway police began to direct the growing crowd up the FDR Drive.

One memory that sticks out is of a woman standing at the bottom of Broadway. In her right arm she cradled bottles of Poland Spring water. In her left hand she held paper napkins. She was wetting the napkins and handing them to strangers to use as masks. I took one and have been grateful ever since. No idea who she was.

I also felt startled everytime a bus moved by because I wasn't sure that another plane wouldn't come raining down on us at that point.

I needed to call my girlfriend and let her know I was okay. She had done the same mental math about my proximity to the towers and wondered if it had fallen on our building and killed me. At the hospital, the took her into a family counselling room to help her collect herself.

Every pay phone had a huge line. I decided to head for the South Street Seaport and find a phone with less people. I made my way to the back end of the top floor of the Seaport and found a bar.

In the course of the next hour, I drank five pints of beer and smoked a full pack of cigarettes, but I felt nothing. In another moment of strangeness, the bartender worried about serving beer before the bar actually opened at 11:00. We assured her that today was probably okay for an exception.

I spoke to a guy who had been on the 15th floor of the north tower when the plane hit. He'd been in the WTC in 1993 when the bomb went off and he did not hesitate to clear out. Another man sitting near me worked at the hotel at the base of the south tower. He had seen a man with both his arms severed.

I called my office, but everybody had gone and I got only email. I reached my parents and told them I was okay. I paged my girlfriend, 07734 - "Hello" upside down on a pager.

Nobody knew what to do at the bar. We watched CNN and MSNBC. At one point, the television was reporting that as many as 12 airplanes had been hijacked and were in the air. Finally, at 2:30 P.M., I tried to make my way home.

Going across Wall Street, I saw the janitors at one building already cleaning the street in front. At that pont I remember thinking, "Someday, all this will have been a year ago, then five years ago and then ten years ago."</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="89286">
<text>Tuesday, September 11, 2001 I was sitting in a friend's office at work, just about 9:00 in the morning, when we got word of the first plane crash via email from a co-worker, who was in our corporate headquarters in Cleveland for the day.

We got to CNN's web site and saw a picture of the gaping hole in the first tower. We were trying to count floors to estimate how many people died. It was horrible to think about being on the plane. Then we thought about looking out your window and seeing a plane come at you.

Suddenly word came (from others in the department) that there had been a second plane, to the other tower. By this point we could not get out to the internet - everyone was trying to hit CNN's web site, as well as the other news web pages.

I called my best friend, and told her to put the TV on. She was home on maternity leave with her first child. I will never forget hearing her say "Oh my GOD, oh my GOD, look at that plane". She was looking at the video of the second plane crashing into the tower. Then she said "Look at that thick black smoke. Why are they showing the penatagon? Wait, the pentagon is on fire too!"

From that point on, we were all in each other's offices for the next hour or so, huddled around radios listening to the news.

No one could get work done. About 11:10 am a group of us went to a sports bar that had dozens of tv's, showing all of the major networks reporting the news. It was very somber. I was still in shock, in horror, amazed by the terrible things such as people leaping to their deaths from the buildings, and the buildings themselves dissolving, melting away into a billowing, monstrous evil cloud of dust. It was as though a volcano had suddenly exploded and was trying to swallow everyone in its path. There was a rain of papers. Business papers were fluttering everywhere. The gray ash was so deep, and the clouds rose so high into the sky. It was beyond comprehension.

We went back to work, and I followed my normal routine of leaving at 2pm to go and get my children. My son's babysitter, was distraught over the presently un-accounted for Godfather of her own child. "He worked next door and he's the type of guy who would just help people."

When I got home, I turned on the TV again, watching the same footage over and over, with new information added in, reeling every time the plane ripped into the tower, astonished every time the towers sank as though in quicksand.

The mayor of NYC spoke and I cried when he made reference to all of the children whose parents wouldn't be coming to get them that evening. I cried and cried, and my seven year old daughter didn't understand why I was crying. I tried to explain to her that the plane had hit the building, and it was very sad, because lots of nice people had died. But she didn't understand. Mercifully, she was too young to have it seem real. Too young to understand that somewhere in the city two hours away were girls who wouldn't have their mommy coming home that night.

I signed on to AOL and my friends were frantic about me. They knew I was in NY state but not where. I had actually given my phone number to one friend, S, and she had left a tearful message on my answering machine at home. She thought it was my cell phone and when she couldn't get through to me she didn't know if I had been in the city and killed. So I logged on and immediately my friends created a chat room just for me to talk, cry, and to "be with" my friends from all over the country. S was distraught, having been through the Oklahoma City bombing. Others worried about me having friends or family in the city. (At this writing the only person I knew was a former co-worker of several years before.) And my beloved Canadian and English friends were offering love and sympathy.

The most gutwrenching thing in the days to come was the flood of individual faces of the people lost. The stories, of who was late and who was early, and thus spared, or lost. The signs, everywhere ... "Have you seen me?" put up by desperate relatives.

My friend (another AOL pal) lives in NYC and works in Manhattan and sent a gripping email describing her day. We were so worried about her until we heard from her. (It was two days).

Mass on Sunday was very hard for me. I walked in and right near where we always sit were the prayer candles. They were white, with red and blue candles forming the cross in the center. I started to cry then. I cried through God Bless America and the other patriotic songs. I went outside and saw close friends, and we all cried together.

I had a painting that I had done, when I took a watercolor class in college. It was part of the flag, draped over a blue and white fabric. I put it in the front window -- it was there for the Gulf war, and now it is there again. I don't really know when I'll put it away.</text>
