I thought of all the people who never had a chance to get out.When they started showing all the emergency service workers responding without concern for their personal safety I was greatly touched and reminded why I chose this profession. You see I am also a volunteer firefighter and EMT and many times we place ourselves in harms way to save a life. I lost 343 brothers that day and I'll remember it for the rest of my life.All gave some- some gave all. God bless you brothers. I walked into work, only to find co-workers huddled around a "watchman" tv. We all huddled around and watched in horror as the second plane hit, the pentagon was hit and then as the towers fell. Panic then struck because I have several relatives who travel as part of their employment. I frantically called everyone to make sure everyone was safe on the ground. Luckily, all my relatives were safe. As I watched out my window, I began to see huge passenger planes land at our little airport. At the same time, I noticed that the busy 4 lane road in front of our office was errily vacant. The saddest part of the day was when I returned home and fed my children and got them ready for bed. My youngest son, who was not quite 3, watched the news cast that showed palnes hitting the buildings and then the towers falling. He began to cry, turned to me and wailed, "They fell down Mom". It then struck me that this had hit each and every person that I knew. I saw the same images and rough details as most did in the early minutes of the tragedy. I watched from the big TV in the living room while Matt watched the little tv in the bedroom. His back was turned to me. His shoulders were dropped, his face was sad. He remembered about the dream he had Sunday night. Two planes flying into the ground and into the water. We watched while we got ready for work. His work closed, mine didn't. We couldn't do anything since everyone else was affected. The art director was married to an American Airlines flight attendent. They knew some of the flight attendents that were killed that day. There was fear in the air, rumors gas prices would rise to unreasonable prices. We were not able to do anything, not even get in to donate blood, only pray. A co-worker came home with me so as not to be alone. The next day, the 7-11 down the street had a huge American flag in the window. The Sikhs at the store wore nametags establishing themselves as non-Arabs and loving America. Some wore baseball caps to hide their turbans. I tried to smile, or be warm to everyone, because there was already too much hate. You worried about your friends who live in New York, or on the east coast. You heard stories about how someone you know, knew someone who got out, or didn't get out. That weekend we were going somewhere and at a firehouse down the street firemen were collecting donations for families of firefighters. We stopped at the light, seeing the transactions. We crossed the street and I prompted Matt to give me all his cash. I found five singles in my purse and he gave me five. I got out of the car and a fireman came over with a rubber boot to put the donation in. He said thank you before I even let go of the money. I dropped it in and the wool lining of the boot touched my hand. I softly said thank you and went back to the car. I began to cry. In that moment, I became involved in this tragedy. It was no longer a story on tv, it was an action in my neighborhood, it was working together to get through the next day. I live in Los Angeles, as far from the tragedies as you can be, but everyday I feel closer and closer still. The thought that there is no way to fix it still lingers. The buildings still burn in your mind everyday. The tears still come, not as easily as before, but your throat still feels choked and your heart cries. Today we continue in our lives. I keep in touch with my family more. We try not to let the nature of fear multiply itself upon us. We hope today is not the day someone will take hatred to another level, but if it is, we will face it. I love America, I love my fellow Americans and I love the country songs about it all. Miss Loft (teacher's aide) was on the computer and we had just finished Social Studies. Mrs. Luluban (teacher) said, "This morning two planes crashed into our World Trade Centers" and she turned on the TV. I watched the TV and could not understand what I was seeing. I did not understand until I came home at the end of the day and my Mom sat down with me and my brother and explained to us what had happened. I was shocked at first, and then I was scared because I did not want our Country to go into war. Now when I see people who look like Bin Laden I am scared. I fly to California every summer to see my Grandma, now I am afraid to fly ever again. When I go to the Navy Base, Whiting Field for Starbase I am scared because soldiers with guns come on our bus and look everywhere even under our seats. Now our Country will never be the same. When I grow up and I have kids of my own I will have to tell them the way the world use to be, before September 11, 2001. A parent called stating "Mrs. Schiller, airplanes have just hit the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and one is headed for the White House." I broke out in goosebumps and tears began to flow. My students became concerned about me and wanted to know what had happened. I remember being torn on what to tell them. I reassured them that I was okay and encouraged them to continue their testing. During lunch break, we told our students about the attacks. The rest of the day was spent talking with and counseling our students. On the way home, I noticed cars stopped on both sides of HWY 62. It took a few minutes to realize that people were in line to get gasoline. Every gas station was full, with lines spilling into the streets. One station had raised their price to $3.85 a gallon. It astonished me how quickly panic had set in. Once home with my family, we sat together and watched the attacks on television. We just had a group hug and prayed for the victims, their families and our country. I was in Tech School at Sheppard AFB in Wichta Falls TX, learning how to be a crew chief of the F-16 Fighting Falcon. I had graduated tech school in July 2001 and was waiting for orders. Mean-while I was persuing my education at MSU. When I arrived at MSU at 0800hrs I noticed that the flag was Flying high above the school. I went to class and started my tests. A series of five. After the first two tests we had a break. So I went outside for some fresh air. When I did I had notice that the flag was now at half-staff. I knew immidiatley something was wrong, so I wen't to my car and turned on the radio. It was all aver the news... every station... That one of the twin towers have been hit by an aircraft. Moments latter they were describing as they were watching, the second tower had been attacked. I was at a loss. We had to finish the tests, and needless to say it was hard to concentrate after that. When they testing was finished, I had recieved a call telling me to report back to duty asap. On the way back I stoped to chek on my family, and let them know that it might be a while befor I got back home again. When i had got back to base, we were on Threat-Con Delta. When I finnaly got back on base after the inspection of my vehicle I was amazed at the silence. Every day while i was there thier were jets flying and studen't walking everywhere. But when I got there, All jets were grounded and no one could be found.Everyone was in there dorms as a required security measure. Even the birds had stoped chirping. All the roads on base was baracaded, and all I could think about was revenge. Since that day I have had the opertunity to serve my country in the war on terrorism. When I arrived at my permanent duty station, my unit was one of the first units deployed to Afganistan to Defend our Great Nation. My feelings of Sept 11, 2001 run deep, and will fight til the end to keep this Great Nation of ours safe for our generations to come. God Bless Americe! All of a sudden, over the intercom, the pricipal announces that the world trade centers have been struck by terrorists and that all of the teachers need to turn on their televisions. All of us got worried. People, including the teachers, started saying that there was a really good chance we were going to get attacked because we live in the "chemical valley" of West Virginia. The were telling us what to do if we did get attacked. I got super worried when I heard that the pentagon had been attacked because my aunt worked in the part that was attacked. It was two days later when my mind was at rest. I had found out that she had taken the day off to go play golf with her husband. I recently visited ground zero. And as I was driving to work, I heard that another had struck. What I felt was a mixture of disbelief,, shock and fear. I wondered how could this happen? Why us? Arn't we good people? How can others view us as evil? We are a kind nation full of kind caring people. How could this happen? I thought of other countries, countries that have been living with terrorism for so so long. Why is this allowed to happen? Before 9/11, I would read and hear of other countries troubles and feel bad for them. But it was a different world from mine. Why did it take this to happen to my country for me to feel genuine compassion for others who have been living this for years? My disbelief,shock and fear turned to questions. I question myself? I pray not only for all Americans,, but for all people. This is my country. I love my country. I really realize now how lucky I am to be an American. Tell us your story: The Red, White, and Blue Will Forever Fly Strong Even though I still set the alarm to go off at 5:30 in the morning I was unable to get out of bed because of an "argument" with a logging truck that wanted to use my side of the road a week earlier to the day at 9:05 in the morning. Needless to say I lost that "battle" but not the one in court. After about 15 minutes of lying there glued to every word that was being said on the radio, I suddenly remembered that I have a TV and turned it on. It was right before the second plane hit. Like many Americans watching the horror unfold that day I was shocked. I was in a daze. This wasn't happening! This couldn?t be happening! No one in their right mind would attack us! I had to ask myself, "Was the accident a week earlier an omen? Was I getting premonitions like my Dad did?" As I laid there and watched the tragedy play out in vivid color I thought about how a ?terrorist? had turned my world upside down and brought it to a screeching halt a week earlier. Then I thought, if Osama bin Laden was after the same effect then he did one hell of a job. He had succeeded in bringing the mightiest country in the world to its knees. He had succeeded in bringing our ?prefect? world to a screeching halt. He knocked the wind out of us. He hit below the belt. But it wasn?t for long. For me the ?event? also had one, and only one, good point. It brought the country together. There was no more every shade of the rainbow. There were only three colors. Red. White. And blue. We were one people. We were one unity. Everyone pulling together for one great cause. To show the world that no matter what, ?WE SHALL OVERCOME!? Like everyone else in the United States I wanted to go to New York and help. But how? By plane? I don?t think so. Cross country? Maybe if a few people got together. Patriotism swelled in out hearts. I sat and practiced ?The Battle Hymn of the Republic? ?America? and other patriotic songs on the piano. Now I knew just how my parents and grandparents felt that fateful day 60 some odd years ago. And just like back then, it brought us all together. We formed a greater nation of one people. And just like they were back then I was angry. I wanted revenge. I wanted to kick some ass and take some names. I was totally behind any retaliation and even thought about rejoining the Armed Forces if they took people my age. I took pride in the fact that a lot of young people felt the same way and joined the Armed Services. But at the same time it brought back memories of how I felt during the Vietnam ?War?. To this day I still can?t bring myself to watch a war movie. Its been a year now, a very fast year, and both events in my life are still burning bright in my memory. As usual the world has backed off a little and left us to ?police? the world and its ?gangs? of bad guys once again. Now we?re after Iraq once again to let us in their country to check for nuclear weapons and once again the world doesn?t want to get involved. All I can say is, ?THANK GOD I?M AN AMERICAN AND LIVING IN THE BEST DAMN COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!? We could'nt believe it when we heard it. When we got to our school, we went on the internet at the english classroom and tried to watch the news programs on the internet. When it came to history class, we went to our commons area and watched the programs on TV. We were shocked when the second tower was hit. There were lots of mixed emotions on the subject. I think the year has gone by very quickly since the attacks. It has been a very emotional year for us and our country. The country has come closer together since the attacks on September 11. I jumped on the computer to read one of my message boards where I read the first tower had been hit. I told my husband to turn the TV on; with in seconds the second plane hit the tower two. I felt total fear, and horror. I knew after the second plane that there was no way it was an accident. I would cry at the drop of a hat for days and days. Tell us your story: On the morning of Sept 11, 2001, I was on my way to fill-in for a pharmacist on vacation at Rite-Aid Pharmacy located in Galax, VA. On the way to work, I had an overwhelming sense of dread and depression for no apparent reason. When I reached the store, which opened at 9am, I shared my misgivings with my co-workers of the day. Within minutes of opening, a pharmacist from another store called and told us of the tragic event of the first tower. We all rushed to get a radio and listened as the second tower was hit. All of us were shocked and horrified that anyone would commit such an act of terrorism. Next, as we listened, we heard about Washington, D.C., and immediately I tried to call one of my friends that works for the FCC. The message that I received was that the phones were down due to a natural disaster, of which this definetly was not! Afterwards, we heard of the tragedy in Pennsylvania with the heroism of those on the plane saving our beloved country from certain disaster. How grateful we all should be of their selfless act of courage. A year later, I am still shocked and horrified at this horrific act of terrorism to our country. My heart and prayers go out to all of the victims and families of 9-11-2001, their loss has caused all of us to rebond as one nation under GOD! May we continue to grow and become stronger as we learn to cope and survive this act of terrorism. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sitting at work, awaiting the arrival of co-workers who were flying in from other states for a meeting. When we heard the radio announce the first plane had hit the World Trade center. I then received a phone call from co-workers in Jersey City who had just witnessed the 1st plane and then the 2nd plane hit. We then gathered in our lunchroom to watch the broadcast. Due to the devastation, we were sent home to be with family and friends. I did not know anyone personally who died or lost a loved one, but did have a co-worker in Jersey City lose her husband, though I did not know her or her husband my heart aches for her. I have two children ages 10 and 12 and I hope and pray that they never again have to experience anything like this. Our main office was located in 7 World Trade Center until 06/2001 and we are very grateful that we decided to move our operation out of New York into Jersey City when we did, or this devastation could have and would have crippled our business. I pray for all of those lost in the September 11, 2001 tragedy, and pray that for all those found alive that someday they will be able to live again and not fear everytime a plane crosses over that something this devastating is going to happen again. I will keep all of those lost in my heart, and pray everyday for those here with us today, that time will heal the scars. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work, about 2 blocks south of the towers.. We heard the first explosion, but thought nothing of it. Then colleagues at out Jersey City location asked us if we were OK and if we were evacuating. We had no idea why they were asking this, then it was all over the news. We were in awe. Then, we heard a roar of an airplane, it went directly over us, then a huge explosion, one that I will never forget. Everyone in the office started to get more and more concerned.. would they fall?.. were there more planes coming?.. would we make it home alive ??. In retrospect, staying inside instead of going out right away probably saved us from exposure to the debri. When the towers came down, it was instantly night, the building was engulfed, smoke and ash was coming thru the vents and windows. It was very hard to breathe. I still have a caugh. I will never forget that day, it seems as if it were yesterday, still have nightmares, still get saddened when I think of the people stranded at the top of the towers, the friends I lost, the feeling I would never see my family again. I had my radio on, was in my car, by myself, like thousands of others traveling on the parkway making their way to work or ther destinations. When announceded the first plane hit, there were many contridicting stories on the radio, I was still in my car when the sencond plane hit, just arriving at work, when I enterend my place of employmentment people were cryng and trying to get as much informaintin as possible. My coworker had a daugher working at tower onee we tried franticly for hours to locate her. Finally though a call from a coworker of hers we discovered she was out of the building and not injured.. I had many friends I worried abouttthat day of their wereoubouts. It took many hours, and days to find out of their wellbeing. This is a day I will never forget, and no one should ever let slip from there minds and hearts. I am wriing this just after watching the one year dedication to all those who lost their lives due to this act of terror on America. I cry for those lives lost, and my heart ackes for those who have to continue with their empty spaces in their lives. I can only say, which is hard to imagine, carry on and be strong for yourself and your family, mainly the small childereen. Teach your children to be caring and loving and not to continue in bitterness.. But be a strong AMERICAN for those lives lost ... You are our future now. SOME FRIENDS OF OURS CAME FLYING INTO THE DRIVEWAY AND WAS LIKE DID YOU HEAR FROM YOUR DAD YET?? THE PENTAGON IS WHERE MY DAD WORKS SOMETIMES WHEN HE IS NOT ON THE AIR FORCE BASE. I SAID HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. YOU SEE MY FAMILY MOVED UP THERE IN JUNE OF THAT YEAR. THIS WAS A BIG CHANCE FOR MY DAD AND WE WERE ALL PROUD. NOW THAT DAY I MUST HAVE TRIED TO CALL A 100 TIMES. ALL I GOT WAS THE LITTLE RECORDING THAT THE PHONE LINES WERE OUT OF SERVICES. AT LIKE 2:OO CLOCK I TALKED TO MY MOM WHO STILL HAD NOT HEARD FROM MY DAD. SHE WAS VERY STRONG THAT HE WOULD CALL WE JUST HAD TO WAIT. I WISH I WAS HALF AS STRONG AS HER. I COULDN'T WAIT ANY LONGER SO I CALLED MY WORK PLACE AND TOLD THEM THAT I WAS GOING TO FIND MY DAD. I HAD ALL THE SUPPORT I NEEDED AND WE WERE OFF. I KISSED MY SON GOOD BYE AND TOLD HIM ME AND DAD WERE GOING TO GO FIND GRANDPA AND WE WOULD ALL BE HOME SAFE SOON. I WENT TO CLOSE THE DOOR AT MY MOTHER IN LAWS WHEN THE PHONE RANG AND IT WAS MY MOTHER. SHE HAD HEARD FROM HIM AND HE WAS O.K. HE WAS ON HIS WAY HOME. THEY HAD THEM IN BOMB SHELTERS AND THEY COULD NOT CALL. I THINK I CRIED MORE WHEN I HEARD HE WAS OK THEN WHEN I DID NOT KNOW. It was just an ordinary day of basic training for the United States Army. My company was to be bussed out to a site were we would set up our tents and practice shooting our weapons. That morning we marched out to the bus stop and were waiting for the bus. I remember the First Sergeant walking out to our group and telling the drill sergeants that they all were needed in a meeting. I didn't know then that what was about to be said would forever change the nation, the way my company was trained, and how I would feel about wearing the Army uniform. It didn't seem like the meeeting lasted that long. Our drill sergeant came back and said "The pentagon is on fire, and a plane has just crashed into the World Trade Center. Thousands of people work at the Trade Center at any given day." That was all he said. At first everyone didn't beleive him. We all looked at each other and there were whispers of the question that was on everyone's mind: Was he kidding? When the buses pulled up shortly we all knew he wasn't kidding. THe bus drivers' faces were all somber and there was just a general atmosphere of saddness surrounding them. That was the first bus ride were everyone was quiet. No one said a word; we all were straining to hear the radio. All day we had little updates. We all listened intensly. Because of that day's events the sleepign out was canceled. We were taken back to the barricks, and for the forst time we soldiers-in-training were called upon to do some real guarding of a perimeter. Our company area was closed off and no one was allowed in unless they worked in the area. From that day on the training for us soldiers got more intense. The general concensus was that the traing was for real. At any given moment after traingn, any one of us could be called to fight for our nation. Since that day, I wear my uniform with more pride than I ever imagined. This IS MY NATION, for this nation I would give my life. America, I am proud to serve you. To the people of America, I just want to say thank you. Thank you for all the support you have given to me, other service members, and to each other. Terrorist what you tried to defeat has just grown bigger and stronger. America will not be defeated.
