Itold her get ready for school honey ,and my son got up all so just as normal. Then just as we're getting to ready to leave my husband yells they crashed a plain in the trade center, come quick hurry. I'm coming hold on. I realy did get it what are you saying? As I stood there my stomach was just falling down inside i people running every where on the t.v.! I realy didn't grasp what was taking place. Our children were i shock they said why would a plain do that did they make a mistake? This I didn't have answer to. Then before we left my husband screemed again BABE THEY DID IT AGAIN! I ran to the t.v. with my mouth wide open and tears running down my face. My husband said he saw an image fall from the tower. Now how do you tell your daughter to have a good b-day at school. When I droped my kids off at school I cried I realy didn't want let them go. If it happened there it could happen any where. By the time I got back home the first tower was starting to fall He called out again BABE BABE the tower is falling the tower is falling.(O My GOD what is going on ? why ?why?.)i looked at my husband and we held each other ,and I said they did get to say good buy. Crap Crap what the hell is going on ? I went to work we're women barbers and all of us we're angry. Then a Foriegn man came in our shop and the mood was so thick that I thought he might think we were going kick his butt. So I broke ice and said did you see what has happened this morning? He said in India that his family was very afraid. Man I felt so small in side I looked at him as the ememy. That night our house was quite my daughter wouldn't let us watch t.v. . She said that thoughs bad men messed up her Birthday. She didn't want to talk about it very much but she said i want to kick there butts. I told her that every person earth does too. She gave me a hug that she had never gave to me before, and so did my son . Even now I can't stop crying. When I see the flag I cry; this is not just freedom it's my right to believe in god ,ONE NATION UNDER HIM. That is what all thoughs hero's have gave there lifes that day for. My heart goes out to all the people who parished all so all the family's we love you and we will all ways remember. I told my daughter this year is a day, a day to celabrate there lives . Tell us your story: I was getting ready for work, my son called and told me about a plane hitting one of the Twin Towers...as I turned my TV on..the second plane hit...I was in total shock and disbelief...so many emotions went threw me...I started to cry when I thought of all the people killed..trapped and injured in those buildings..When I saw films of people jumping out of windows knowing they were falling to their deaths, I can't even imagine the terror they must have felt. My heart was deeply saddened, when I realized that many of the people who lost their lives my never be found. I thought who could be filled with so much HATE that they could destroy so many people and their families...I watched news coverage each day to see how many people would be found..praying for each family whose life it had effected. I have the highest respect for all who worked at Ground Zero..they were not giving up until they knew there was no longer a possibility for survivors..I have a friend who is a fireman..who went and helped with rescue efforts...I wanted to help in some way no matter how small..so I went and volunteered at our local Red Cross and did what ever I could... This tragedy will be a part of our history ..I'm so very thankful to live in a country as wonderful as this..where we all pull together to show our love for one another and our nation. Tell us your story: I work for the Treasury Department (Financial Management Sevice) and I was supposed to attend a meeting at the General Accounting Office (GAO) (441 G. St. NW Washington DC) at 10 a.m. Since I was not able to arrange for a parking space at GAO, I drove to Pentagon City in Arlington VA and parked there and took the Metro (subway system) to the Gallery Place Metro stop near GAO. I arrived at Gallery Place aroung 8:45 and walked leisurely to GAO enjoying the nice weather. I arrived at GAO around 9 a.m. and bought a cup of coffee in the cafeteria to go with the sandwich I brought from home. I sat down near the TV and there were a few people watching and I saw the North Tower smoking. There was a guy near me saying over and over "it went right through the building." Then I saw a replay of the second plane hitting the South Tower. I ate my sandwich and drank my coffee still intending to attend my 10 a.m. meeting. At around 9:45, it was announced that the Pentagon had been hit. I knew that I had to get home but I didn't think I could get to my car at Pentagon City. I tried calling my wife but she wasn't home. I went back to the Gallery Place Metro stop and I heard an announcement that all subway trains were running normally. So I got on a train and headed for Pentagon City where my car was parked. The subway train (yellow line)was supposed to go over the Potomac River into Virginia but it stopped before going into Virginia across the Potomac. Trains were not allowed to go over the Potomac. I had to find another way home. I took another subway train (packed with people - everyone was trying to get home) to my office in Hyattsville MD. When I got to my building in Hyattsville, the security guards would not let me in even though I had identification - everyone was supposed to be out of the building. I said I had no place to go and I finally got in. I had been wearing a jacket and tie and I was all sweaty from chasing around. When I got to my office I started to say something to my boss and before I could say anything he said "yeah, the planes hit the buildings and they collapsed." I didn't really understand what he was saying about the buildings collapsing until I got on the internet and saw what had happened. I called my wife but she still wasn't home. Since the part of Treasury I'm with (the Financial Management Service) has responsibility for ensuring that funds are available to make the government's payments, many people including my boss (an Assistant Commissioner) were busy trying to keep the flow of funds working - much of this is based at the New York Federal Reserve Bank near the World Trade Center so work-arounds were being set up. We couldn't go home until all the arrangements had been made. Around 2 p.m. I got a ride with my boss to my home in Annandale VA. Also in the car was the Commissioner of the Financial Management Sevice who had been in Hyattville MD(his office is in Washington DC). I had been able to contact my wife before leaving for home. Later in the day we drove to Pentagon City to get my car. The highway (Route 395 to Washington DC) was completely deserted - I think it had just been re-opened when we got on it. The plane that hit the Pentagon had flown very low over Route 395 before hitting the Pentagon. We could see the Pentagon smoking as we drove to Pentagon City. I paid $13 and got my car. It was around 8 that i had turned on the news and had seen that a plane had hit the Tade Cnter. It was actually two that had hit. Every channel I had turned to there was news all about the Trade Centers. I wanted to stay and watch the news but I had to go and catch my bus. When I got to school I remember I had Health first period with one of my volleyball coaches. We sat and watched people try to escape the towers, and then they fell. It must have been the hardest thing I have seen in a long time. I remember thinking of all those people in the buildings that had died and the people in the planes. The rest of the day in all my classes we watched the news and we wanted to know more. We had a volleyball game that day that had been canceled because of the event and I remember people wanting to play, but I thought how can these people be so selfish. All this devistation all over the U.S. and you want to play a volleyball game. My biggest concern was that one of my relatives was in the builiding but she wasn't and that was the first relief. For the rest of the day we watched and watched, and then I went home and continued watching. I rememeber crying at night thinking of the kids who lost their parents and the wives and husbands who had died. The next week my dad was told he might have to go out of the country. This is where it hit me that I could become affected more then I really wanted to. Later that night my mom called me and told me that my stepdad was on 24 hour watch, which meant he could leave at any moment. This is the worst thing to happen to a girl my age, I think. So much was racing through my mind. Now as one year passes I think of all those who lost their lives, and all those who were left behind without mothers or fathers. I always want to know, "What were these terrorists thinking when they hit those buildings?" Innocent people were killed for what reason? I think they should pay for their crimes and what they have caused on our country. Now everyday I sit in wonder, "Will my dad and stepdad go to war?" Could another attack happen just like this one? I know we have people fighting for our country right now, and I thank God every day that they are here to protect us. I think September 11th should be a day to remember those innocent victims who died, but also the men and women who died as heros. It will be a day never forgotten. I guess because both me and my daughter were born in that month. It was 8:30am, and we had pulled into her school-yard in the carpool-line as she started singing along to a Brittany Spears song on the radio, (funny how you remember minute detail). Then we were discussing plans for her upcoming 11th birthday party when the news broke that an airplane had just struck WTC TOWER 1. My first thought was, "Oh my God, the pilot must've had engine failure or something." And I prayed that it wasn't a bad crash. My daughter exited the car, and I turned toward home. (I only live 2 minutes from her school). Once home, I ran inside with my 9 month old son in tow, and turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane hit. Initially I was confused though, because I thought I was seeing re-play of the 1st plane hitting tower 1. But as I watched, I realized that smoke and fire were coming from both towers. So, again I thought, one airplane had gone through both towers. As I sat down in front of the TV, I realized there were 2 seperate planes and 2 separate hits to the towers. Immediately I thought, "what's happening here, are we under attack-is this going to be another Pearl Harbor?" I had feelings of panic for my daughter that I had just dropped off at school. Should I go back and get her, should I call my husband, who drives a truck and is out on the road right now? Then my mind went to the rest of my family. Me and my husband both are from Alabama and moved to N.C. 8 years ago in search of better jobs. All of a sudden Alabama seemed so far away, and New York seemed way to close. N.C. is as far away from AL. as I had ever been, and it took a lot of convincing to get me to move from a very small town to what I considered a big city. I even remember comparing Durham/Raleigh to New York once, because it was the biggest city I had ever been to. Now, I thought of the safety of my home town and how no-one ever locks their doors, and there is maybe 1 crime committed each year there, and you always know who did it, and why. At that moment my mom called, and told me she thought I needed to pack up some things very quickly and head home to Alabama. At the same moment, the announcement came about the pentagon, and I remember standing there on the phone with my mother begging me to head home, and looking at the disaster on TV unfolding before my eyes. I think I said something like, "they just hit the pentagon, mom, I wonder if they are working their way south?" Then I thought of all the military command posts along the North Carolina/South Carolina coasts, and how an attack there would prove to be just as lethal and crippiling to the US. I was totally petrified with fear of not knowing what to do. I felt like a 5 year old little girl who was lost in a very big department store with no exits in sight. I remember telling my mom that I would call her back, that I needed to call my husband. By the time I reached him, the 4th plane had crashed in PA. He told me not to panic, and to stay by the phone and TV and he would keep calling to check on me through the day, and if there were any strikes near us to head to Alabama. I then called my co-workers at the pediatric office where I've been a nurse for 7 years and everyone had the same tone of shock, fear, and uncertainty. As I watched the images on TV, of the people running away from the towers, the president's face as he was notified in that classroom in FL., and the rescue workers hurrying to do what they do best, a deep sense of what was really important in my life swept over me. I've never been to New York, although I'm more determined now than ever to visit. But my heart and prayers and concern were with every person that I saw on TV that day. I thought about the ones who probably didn't take the time to say good-bye to their loved ones before leaving for work that morning, or the ones who were planning families for the first time. And of all the ones left behind to cope and to try to make some kind of sense out of it. I don't think we'll ever be the same as a nation. I just pray we are stronger TOGETHER. September 11th, 2001 is one of those days. One of those days where you can remember exactly where you were and what you were doing. I was studying American History in Mrs. Nugent?s second period class. In the middle of the class, another teacher came in and whispered something in Mrs. Nugent?s ear. She finished her sentence, then told us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. She turned on the tv and that?s all we did for the remainder of the period was watch the news report. At first, it really wasn?t a big deal. But then the second plane hit and we got a little worried. The next class I had did not have the tv on, so I didn?t know what happened next. After that period, my best friend Natalie came and told me that the towers had collapsed. I couldn?t believe it. All through the rest of the school day, we had the tv?s on. In some classes, we didn?t do the lesson plan; we watched tv. My mom picked me up that day. She had the radio on. All day long the radio had news on; no music at all. We went home and saw it on the tv. I had a doctor?s appointment that night, which still happened. However, my dance classes were canceled. I had a play rehearsal with a lot of young kids, and all the kids were nervous and worried. It still looks like a scene from a horror movie. I can?t believe it actually happened. I think this affects me a lot because in July of 2001, I and another member of my church youth group went to New York City. We saw the World Trade Center. We almost went up in it, too, but we ran short on time. I have pictures and other souvenirs with the WTC on them. It still shocks me when I see the footage and know they?re not standing anymore. It?s very hard for me and the other girl to control our emotions now. She was so upset by it that she slpet in her parent?s bed with them and just cried. Also, we were a bit worried about a war starting. My brother is 18, and we thought he might have to be called in for the draft. I kept thinking, ?Who did this?? I couldn?t believe someone would purposely do this. But, in a way, it was like a wake-up call that we needed. Our country is so much more united and proud now than ever before. We don?t take things for granted. The terrorists wanted to change America, and they succeeded. You know this when you see all the American Flags flying. I am not afraid of New York City. I want to go live there someday. When I went to school I heard it was the twin towers. A lot of us were scared about what was happening. My teacher had the radio on all day. We really wanted to go home, but he day had only started. I remember that there was loud talking on the radio. My teacher was very quit that week. We all felt really bad. This summer my family and I went to visit ground zero, all there was were silence all you could do was cry. My friend and I were writing up a program when the teacher from next door busted in and shouted "A plane has just crashed into the Twin Towers." At that time I didn't think about terrorists ... all I was thinking is, "How could someone run into a building..." When I got to my office, I joined most of my co-workers in the conference room to watch the new coverage on TV. We sat in shocked dismay as the second plane hit, and then later as the towers crumbled and fell. It was unbelieveable. We felt and heard the impact of the plane that hit the Pentagon while we were in the conference room, but didn't know what it was. A co-worker whose wife works at the Pentagon called him on his cell phone to tell him what had happened and that they were evacuating. We then went to the rear side of our building, and could see from the rear windows the smoke arising from the Pentagon. It seemed that the world was coming to an end. An hour later, we were all told to evacuate the Lab and go home. My commute is about 45 minutes long, and all the way home I prayed for myself and my family and all those that had to have been killed or horribly injured in all the attacks and their families. I still can't fathom the misery that the victims families have had to bear, and on the first anniversary of this terrible trauma to our people and our country, I pray again that nothing like this can ever happen here again. My mom had turned on the t.v. to see the weather report just before I had gone out and apparently she had changed the channel because the next thing I know she is crying "oh my god!". I did not know what was going on so I just poked my head in to see what had upset my mother and I found her crying while the news went on talking about the plane that had just crashed into Tower One. I could not believe what i was seeing. I mean I had never imagined someone would do that. But someone did and as I watched the second plane crashed into Tower Two. Then the news went to the Pentagon and reported that a plane had crashed into it also. That is when I figured that this was a terror attack. I mean no one would attack the Pentagon unless they were a terriost. I just sat down in disbelief while everything was unfolding on t.v. My children came into the room just as plane 93 crashed in Pennsylvania and they asked what was going on. I tried to explain it to them but I had to understand it myself first. And that was one thing I could not understand. Why would someone do this? Then the news went back to the towers and to all the people running away and trying to get there to save people in the towers. I started to cry as I saw people running away and when I saw those people jumping from so high up I thought I was going to die from the pain inside me. No one should have to die and they surely should not have to die that way. When the Towes collapsed all I could do was pray that everyone was o.k. even though I knew deep down that some of them would not be. All I could do was pray and I am not one to pray but I did that day and for days after that. I sat glued to the t.v. all day watching everything that was happening and I cried alot to. Especially when the priest got killed while doing last rites on a fallen firefighter. It broke my heart in so many ways to see all that destruction and murder and for what? Because of a psycho? I hope that he rots in the furtheist realm of hell for what he has done. I hate him and I wish I could watch him die like I am sure he watched our people die. I have thought of that day many times since it happened and my heart hurts for all the people who lost their lives that day and even though I did not know any of them I will always keep them close to my heart just as everyone should and I am sure they do. My children understand what happened now in some ways and they want to say that they are sorry it happened. I will end this by saying that I am happy with the way President Bush is handling things and I am proud of the military. My heart aches for so many who have had to experience such a horrible disaster. I work for the state of Michigan Community Health Department; and when I heard what had happed, a television was accessed to view what had occurred to our horror. I felt like someone took the air out of me, witnessing with my eyes, what happened and to then view "live" on television, the 2nd tower being crashed into. I did have such an empty feeling and helplessness of what to do, because with it all, I have a brother who is a captain for American Airlines who does fly the 767 aircraft which was used to crash into the WTCs. He also flys out of Dulles Airport. Immediately, I began to wonder if he was flying, where he was, was it his aircraft that crashed into the WTC. I called my mother and asked her if she was aware of what had taken place. She was unaware of what was going on and turned on the television. I asked her if she wanted to try to reach "Jerry" or if I should. She said she would try to call. We feel so fortunate because when she called, my brother answer the telephone. We knew he was safe. He had just left Dulles Airport late the evening before and arrived at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport around 12:30 a.m. on 9/11/01. I can only express the small amount of emptiness I felt when I first heard of what happened and what one goes through because of "not knowing." I live in Brooklyn so I knew I had to leave quickly because the commute takes at least 50 minutes. As I got on the train things seemed normal. It was about 8:30am. I got on the Q express at Brighton Beach Avenue and started reading the Wall Street Journal. When I arrived at Dekalb Ave. I saw this young girl get on the train. She was a normal looking Black American but she had this strange look in her eyes. Suddenly our eyes met and then she looked away very quickly at others on the train. She then screamed out, "did you hear what happened, a plane crashed into the world trade center!!!" At first I thought she was crazy, then it hit me that it was the World Trade Center. Those buildings are tall and it was quite possible that an accident could have happened. I panicked! My girlfriend Cristina was in WTC2 working for Morgan Stanley on the 73rd floor and for all I know she could be dead. I ran upstairs out of the subway at Dekalb. Ave to the street level dumping my newspaper in the garbage. As soon as I got to the outside, I saw people running. Everything was moving so fast. I ran towards the Brooklyn Heights and as I got closer and closer I saw people crying. Then I saw the smoke. Then I saw the buildings on fire. There were flames shooting out and spreading down the building like termites. I completely forgot about everything around me and called Cristina at work. The phone was busy. I tried at least 20 times to get through within those few minutes while walking towards the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridge. As I was dialing and dialing and getting closer to the bridge the view became more and more clear on how bad this was. I didn't know what was happening. I was hoping it was an accident but deep down inside I knew it was a terrorist attack. I thought my girlfriend was dead. I ran to the Manhattan Bridge with one thing in mind...to find Cristina. I knew I was okay and my family was safe because my brother worked uptown and my parents lived in Florida. My only concern was Cristina. Suddenly as I was continuously dialing to reach Cristina, Roxanne, and schoolmate of Cristina and mine?s called me on my other line on my cell phone. She said that Cristina was ok, she spoke to her and she told me that Cristina wanted me to meet her at her Grandmother's house on the lower east side by Ave. D and E 10th Street. When I got to the Manhattan Bridge, a cop had stopped me from crossing over. I said I had to get through. He told me he couldn't let it happen, the city was shutting down and it was dangerous for me anyways. I told him to listen to me and said that my girlfriend is over there and I am going to get her, you can arrest me, you can do whatever you need to do, but if it was you, you'd want me to let you go get her. He just grimaced at me and then grinned and pointed his arm towards the other side. When I was running over the bridge I had the perfect view of the situation. On my left were the towers I grew up looking out at from my parent?s bedroom window at home. I used to use them to tell me where in the city I was and where I was going. They were burning up in a thick black evil smoke. I would be lost with out them as well as if I were to lose Cristina but at this point I knew she was alive so I was a bit relieved. I still had other friends I was worried about like Michael Losardo and Danielle Lim and others. As I was staring at the towers while running over the bridge I saw a train pass over just to my right. I saw people looking at me running and I saw them looking at the towers burn while they were pressing their hands and faces and chests against the train doors and windows in horror and panic. The emotion was very present then. I thought I was in the middle of a movie. It just wasn't real. It could not have been happening. When I got over the bridge to the other side the cops over they?re just looked at me in a trance probably thinking why would I be coming into Manhattan when everyone else was leaving. I ran straight to Cristina's Grandmother's house and as soon as I got there screamed up to her window "CRISTINA, CRISTINA...? I saw her peak out and she came running down the stairwell and we hugged each other harder than we ever did. The rest of the day was just anxiety provoking. The Towers fell soon after I arrived at her grandmother's house and we just wanted to leave. Cristina's Dad worked by the courts downtown and he met us at the F train station by east Broadway. We hopped on and I spent the next three days with Cristina and her family. It was horrible for everyone and I will never forget the day I almost lost someone very important to me. Unfortunately, I lost others who were not only important to me but to the City of New York as well. NYPD, FDNY, EMS, PA Cops, WTC workers and Employees. They all contributed something to this city. I was home that morning when I heard the news. Being a New Yorker I just had to find a way to see for myself as it was just too unbelievable to comprehend on TV & Radio. On Sept 13th, 2001, just two days after this tragic event, my brother and I found a way to ground zero. It was like the Twilight Zone and we were in it. There were few people around and the silence was deafening. The smell was that of this sick distorted electric scent. Not bodies as one may imagine. What we experienced was nothing you can get from a television outside of the planes crashing into the buildings that we did see on TV. While we didn't see any bodies, and we were right in the thick of ground zero, the destruction was just insane and movie-like. The people we did see at the end of the journey were kind of confused and starry-eyed. Workers, military, relief aid etc.. We saw a fire truck that was crushed just beyond recognition. We could tell from the emblems. I won't mention what else we saw but things were just really like out of a horror movie. The most amazing feeling to me was that I felt like it was World War II. Everything was black & white and it was like watching an old movie but we were the characters. When I see an old movie, I always wonder why everything looks so gray even though I do realize there was no color at that time. It just reminded me of the holocaust and I mean no disrespect when you do a number's comparison. Just what I imagine the vibe may have been like when you see distruction first hand. While I cannot comment on the sudden fear of such an event like the holocaust or Sept-11th, I am just still amazed that this can actually happen in what are supposed to be civilized times. How off is that statement? It is as bad as it has ever been just with a different face. If you were not there to actually see the aftermath, it was an awakening in reality and a scene that has made me want to live everyday with a good full spirit in motion. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My boyfriend woke me up around 9:45 telling me that I needed to go out on the balcony of our SW D.C. apartment. We lived across the Potomac from the Pentagon and all I saw was this thick black smoke across the sky. I asked him what happened and he said, "A jetliner crashed into the Pentagon and two more have hit the Trade Center towers." I looked at the television and couldn't believe what I was seeing. We had also felt something a little later as if a gas line or something exploded. It shook our building and the windows wobbled. There was no explanation for that, and we wondered if something else had happened. I called in to my job, where my boss was unaware. I was on the phone with her as the first Tower collapsed. She just said "Ohmigod!Ohmigod!" and got off the phone. I didn't find out until later that her son had been in Tower 2 that day and had been lucky and made it out. I was very unnerved for awhile seeing all the soldiers going by (I was near both an army and a navy base). There was nothing in the skies--which were silent-- and all you heard were military jets and helicopters. When they finally reopened National, I would wake up in the morning out of a sound sleep, freaked out and scared because the planes were so loud and seemed so low(I hadn't realized they had changed the flight patterns).
