The room I was in didn't have a T.V. so we did not really know what was going on. Then as we were going down to lunch someone said,"The Twin Towers have been hit." Well I thought that it was just a rumor. When we got down to the lunch room the teachers had the T.V. going and they were talking really quiet. That was when I saw it. The channel was showing the first plane crash into the building. For the rest of the day everyone was numb. I just couldnt believe it. Everybody had questions but the teachers just said to watch the T.V. When I got home I turned on the T.V. and watched the whole story. It took a few days to sink in. It was just so unbelievable. I started calling family and friends. I had just dropped my 2 year old at preschool and I started freaking out. So, after many phone calls, I went back to the school and picked my children up then picked my 13 year old niece up at school. My best friend left work and picked her children up at school too. We all gathered at my house and watched everything on tv. I was really afraid of what the terrorist would do next. We have friends in New York and could not get in touch with them. I was very sad for everyone there. To celebrate the one year anniversary, I dressed my kids in red, white, and blue to honor all the wonderful lives that were so tragically lost on that day. I was sitting in the library and some kid ran it and yelled "Yo the World Trade Center is burning." Not beliveing a word of it, I continued working. On my way outside, I saw tons of people on the corner looking up the street, to where just across the Hudson River, the World Trade Center buildings looked like two giant burning cigars. Wait a minute, I just left my dad while getting off the PATH train at Exchange Place. He would continue the train ride until the WTC stop. I knew he worked in the building in front of it; World Financial Center(Merril Lynch) was where he worked. I was thinking everythings gonna be fine. I sat in Latin class and my dad appeard in the doorway. He was ok. But this didnt mean that everyone else was. We spent the rest of the day encouraging students who had parents or family in the towers that they would be ok. And then the unimaginable happened. I sat on the top floor of the building in my school and watched the North tower collapse; an image that I will never forget. Well it turned out one of my good friends fathers, made it out ok. But on the long descent thorugh Jersey City and back to Kearny, I would only discover that the pentagon had been hit. I went home that day and just watched the news. That night I went to a friends house to watch a movie; to help clear my mind. It was when I got home that I found out that my Godmother's nephew Chrisopher had been in the 92nd floor of the North tower and had not been seen. In the coming months he was soon prnounced dead. However my dad, who took the PATH train to the WTC stop everyday excpet one for 25 years was just greatly haunted. He worked right behind the towers in One Liberty Plaza and eventually in the World Financial Center. THe image of seeing bodies jump from the burning towers that he had the pleasure of looking at since they were built was simply too much for him. He tries to pretend sometimes it doesnt bother him, but I can tell its taken its toll. I myself was involved in the New York City Skateboarding scene, and after looking through tape after tape, I finally found the tape my friend made of the WTC at night and the grace it offered the city. I cry everytime the news comes on and I am reminded that I could have been killed on September 11, 2001. I was suppose to go into Manhatten to a doctors appointment and I decide not to go just then I turned on the car radio and they were saing that the World Trade Center had been attacked. For the first time in my life I felt helpless. I remember approcahining 149th Street and the Grand Concourse and seeing the second building fall. I was in tears because I could feel all the death and the pain from people that I could not help. See, I am pior military and my job was to help people and defend this country with my life and ironiclly I had just finished my tour of 8 years in the US Army Reserve. As, the buliding fell i could smell the dust and the smoke and the mere sight of my childhood tumbling to the ground was heartbreaking. In 1968 when I was born the Twin Towers were just being built and I will always remember that shkyline forever. It was part of my life. I lost a good friend because of the WTC attacks and truthfully I will never forgive the people who did it, but I don't agree with making every muslium in the US suffer for something that they had nothing to do with. My friend Mark was only 21 years old and his mother and wife got caught in buliding one and two days later he killed himself. As long as there are countries who dislike the US and as long as the US gets into everyone elses business we will always become a target of other countries anger. I love the United States of America and I am happy to be part of this great country. I want to thatnk all the people who helped, prayed and were just part of our pain. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was a Senior in high school, and getting ready to go to school for Drumline practice when my mother woke me up screaming. I had passed out on the couch in the living room the night before and when I woke up the T.V. was on and I saw this plane going in a building. I didn't know what was going on and anything. My mother said a plane had crashed in to the WTC. I didn't know what it was or anything but as we watched T.V. a little longer, I watched LIVE as the second plane hit. I quickly got dressed and headed for the door. My mother asked where I was going and I told her I had to let the people at school know. The only people at school that early was administrators and the Band who was practicing before the sun even came up. I ran the mile to school and found a few friends in the hallway and told them. Everybody thought I was crazy so I grabbed my friends radio and turned the station and as they listened, everything went silent. A mob of 15 people ran into our band directors office and turned on the T.V. Our director thought is was some kind of show. To this day I here his words ring in my ears, "It's just a story." We dragged the T.V. into our band room which could hold up to a couple hundred students and more people showed up as the tragedy continued. We all watched as people jumped, and fell from the towers. We clung to our boyfriends, girlfriends, and family as watched helplessly while New Yorkers ran from the collapsing WTC2. Students and Faculty alike were crying. One friend in particular was crying because her brother was in the military and they went on high alert. With different radios and T.V.'s going on all around the room, we were trying to listen in on all that was going on. A Plane went down in P.A. and one had hit the Pentagon. It was unreal and I tried constantly to convince myself that this was a dream. It may seem stupid but it was the only thing that made me feel calm. Through out the day we all tried to comfort each other and we watched as casualties were evacuated from the buildings, and Rescueres went to work, doing what they do. I wasn't there but I felt the very same thing that those people in the buildings did....I think all America felt the same feeling on that day, though we can't put a name on it, we felt it. I remember one of my patients screaming out, "Mrs. Hall! Come and see this!" I thought my patient had fallen out of her chair. When I arrived at her room , she was watching the news with a look of horror on her face. I asked her was she in pain,and she raised her arm , pointing at the television with one hand and covering her mouth with the other. I looked over at the television and watched as the first airplane hit the first building and then the second airplane hitting the other building. I prayed that this was either a movie or I was dreaming. I stood there next to my patient's wheelchair like my feet were glued to that very spot. I listened to the news reporter confirm my fear to what I had just seen. Something so horrible that I felt my heart skip 2 to 3 beats. I listened over our hospital intercom system , as the receptionist reported what was happening in New York. At this time I begin to walk away from my patient's room into the hallway where all of my co-workers were crying and hugging one another. I felt as though I was daydreaming and I was in a nightmare. I thought to myself "This kind of thing doesn't happen in real life. This kind of thing only happened in the past. Like with pearl harbor!Where is God! God please come down and explain to me what you just allowed to happen to innocent people!" I remembered walking into some of the people in the hallway and bumping into the walls while tears streamed down my face. I thought about the innocent people inside the buildings. I noticed that one of the customer service reps was listening intently to a radio set up on a counter. As I walked toward her I noticed a strange look on her face. She asked if I had heard about the commercial jet that flew into the WTC. My immediate thought was that it was an accident - that it had probably skimmed the top of the building and crashed. I headed over to a PTA meeting at a friend's home and as I opened the door, I heard the news from the television about the second jet crashing into the WTC. I worried about my husband (who normally works at the Met Life Building, but on this day he was at a seminar in Westchester) and my children (at 2 different schools in the district). All cell phone lines were down and I couldn't contact my husband - I was afraid that maybe he had changed his mind and gone into Manhattan instead. We all started to panic - we didn't know what other buildings were targets. When news came that the buildings collapsed, i ran home to make sure that my parents were okay and then went to my son's schools. I knew that we had many parents in the school worked in or around the WTC. We searched through the emergency contact cards because they listed the work addresses and telephone numbers for all parents or guardians. Many parents came to pick up their children, but my PTA co-members and I stayed to comfort the children and teachers that couldn't leave. The building was locked down and we waited for additional news. My husband made his way back to Rockland County and came to the school to find me - I cried when I saw him. I have never felt fear as I did on that morning. Our community lost sons, daughters, fathers and husbands that day - there is a sadness every single day since then. It's a sadness that horror and tragedy could befall any one of our families at any moment - that our friends and family members heading out to their "safe" jobs could become victims of terrorism. I am sad for my children - I didn't have to see these images and know this horror when I was growing up. Tell us your story: I can't remember exactly what class I was in when I first heard the news, but I can tell you where I was when the first tower fell. My school is about 45mins away from New York City and most people commute to the city for work. So, when we first heard the news, all the teachers basically suspended their classes to let the kids call their parents to make sure they were okay. We have a television is every classroom, lining the hallway ceilings, and in the library, and lounges. And there wasn't a T.V. that wasn't turned on and tuned into the news nor a T.V. lacking a group of kids surrounding them watching and listening intently. During the course of the morning I found myself down in the library trying to figure out exactly how close my very good friend's school was to the Twin Towers when the first tower fell. The librarian's had set up chairs in front of the T.V. But the crowd was so big, I was standing. I was staring in awe, not quite comprehending what was happening, when my friend came up behind me and said, "That was one of the Twin Towers. It just fell." Neither the words nor the pictures registered in my mind at first. It was such a shock, and I couldn't get my mind around the fact that a plane had flown into the building and that it had just collapsed before my eyes. And then to see, the plane crash into the second building a short time after was more than words can describe. It was awful, hateful, and inhumane. The rest of the day is a blur. I went home and waited till my Mom got back from the City. Her story is more horrible than mine, because although I might have watched the towers fall on T.V. my mother watched them fall from the top of her office building. That night watching the news, learning what had happened, how the planes had been hijacked, how D.C. had been hit and that there was a plane intended to do damage in L.A. it was just so horrible. I'm sure I cried. I just couldn't believe that something so hateful could happen, especially to New York City. For the days following, I never knew how much patriotic spirit I had inside of me, not to mention the love I had for New York City. I went to the city the following weekend. Not down to the site, but to Times Square, and words can't describe what I saw. Patriotic spirit everywhere but then everything was deserted and deprived of people. So much in our world changed that day. We saw so much courage, pain, and the binding together of a Nation. Tell us your story: for me tues sept 11 started out normally enough. i had just got out of bed and had to go to morehead state university and then on to work later on. i flipped on the tv, thinking that i would change the channel to vh1 classic. it was just dumb luck i left it on bbc america the night before. at first i thought it was an accident. my first thought was "our world trade center?" later, at school, i found everyone at the university center clustered around several tv sets brought in for the purpose. my guts were in knots as i heard the details. i could not get the thought of the children who were on that flight. later i found out that just after i left the university center, someone left a suspicious box on the second floor, causing an evacuation and general panic. as i stopped at the post office on the way to work, i got reminded that we have a refinery in ashland and that there was a depot of nerve gas just down the road from morehead. later at, work i quietly made out my will, because i was not going to miss school because. that night at work was the quietest night i had ever seen since coming to work here. when i came home, i saw the arabs celebrating the murder of our people, and that all but turned me against islam, a feeling that persists to this day. if it is such a religion of peace, they sure have a funny idea of peace. this has created pride and anger. pride in my country, anger at the squirrly people who try to indoctronate that we were asking for it. this has the same logic as blaming a rape victim because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. rebecca estep Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Tell us your story: I am an attorney practicing in a one man law office in a town of approximately 16,000 in what was the heart of Alabama coal country Walker County). Jasper is the county seat and my office is approximately two blocks from the courthouse. I was at my desk when my secretery Shashonna Ford received a call from he mother-in-law Hanna who told her plane had hit the World Trade Center. We had a radio and began following the unfolding story and also followed it on the internet. The first pictures of the destruction we saw were still photographs on the ABC News web site. I left my office at noon and went to my parents home approximately a mile from my office. My parents had been watching the news all morning and we watched together for a while. I returned to my office but little work was done the remainder of the day. I serve as a municipal judge in Carbon Hill, a small town approximately 14 miles west of Jasper. Court was scheduled for 5:00 p.m. and we decided it was important to hold court that evening because, as difficult as it was, because one thing the terriorist wanted to do was disrupt the work of government and business. I later found out that one of my friends from church, Dorothy Ellison, a retired high school teacher, had a granddaughter who working in New York City and she was not in the Trade Center but was going to the area when the planes hit and the towers fell. She wound up running for blocks to get away from the destruction. My wife is a third grade teacher and it was very difficult for her to help calm the fears of her children as they learned of the tragedy. One of the hardest thing I had to do was on Sunday, September 16, 2001 at Sumiton United Methodist Church when I was in front of the church where I assist our Pastor with some of the worship service prior to his sermon. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was getting my two children ready for school, when I turned on the television and CNN was on. The first plane had just struck the Word Trade Centre. I turned to my son who was watching with me and exclaimed, "oh that's terrible, a plane accidentally hit the world trade centre". As my 14 year old son and I watched, the second plane struck. It is difficult to express the sheer "horror and terror" that I felt as I realized what must be happening. To my surprise, my son replied, "it must be Osama". I had never even heard the name before. As the events of that day escalated, I continued to prepare my children for school. I drove the children to their school, as I did every morning, questioning all the while, whether I was doing the right thing by sending them to school on such a "life altering" day. As it turned out most of the students did attend classes that day, although they spend most of the day watching the television in their classrooms. Thankfully, the teachers and fellow students provided a safe and calm environment for my children that day. On my way back home the skies over Winnipeg were filled with jet airplanes circleing the city at extremely low altitudes, waiting for their turn to land. I was terrified. When I arrived at home, I cried, called my family members, some of whom live in the United States. My heart breaks for the people of New York and Washington; especially those who lost loved ones in the attacks. It is an event that has effected us all. Tell us your story: We were just sitting in our american literature class and it was around 9:53 am, we were just about to end class and be finished with second hour. All of a sudden, another student from a classroom next to us burst into our room and yelled that the World Trade Center was being attacked. At first none of us believed it, because noone would dare pull stunt like that, the bell rang ending second hour, but during our break, we still didnt believe that we had been attacked. Yet more and more people came out of the classroom saying that we were being attacked. Finally all the people in the all the hallways gathered into some room or another with a tv and we watched as the planes ran into the tower. We were in shock, none of this comprehended to us, it was all just an act, a trick. Yet in our minds we knew it wasnt. The rest of the day, none of the teachers really taught class, we just watched the news and further updates on the attack. We thought we would have to go to war... I was in Mrs. Gordan's classroom when I noticed the teachers all started talking to eachother and looked like they were worried about something. They all were talking on thier walkie talkies until my principle walked in our classroom. All the 6th grade classes came into our class room and she sat down and tried to explain to us what had happend. Since I was only 11 years old I didn't know what the World Trade Center was. I thought it was and airport because they said a plane had crashed into it. I could only imagine planes in airports, or in the sky. I could'nt imagine a plane going through a building. Kids kept leaving the classes when there parents came to pick them up. They put in a movie to keep us occupied until we either got picked up, or school ended. We were to young to have any idea what was was going on. When I got home from school my Dad was on the couch watching TV. Which was weird cause he never came home early. I asked what he was watching and he tried to explain what was happening. It was scary to see a plane going through a building. That same day my Grandmother, Grandfather, and my two Aunts were on a plane going to California. They fortuantly we're on of the planes that got highjaked, even though they did take off from D.C. I remember a few days before my grandparents were talking about the day they got there tickets, i've always been scared of planes, but they told me about thier flight I figuerd nothing would happen, cause nothing ever does. First, we couldn't believe what was happening. Our boss put on the television and the extra newseditions were already reporting the disaster. We actually saw the second plane crashing the second tower. We were asthunished, saw people jumping out of the windows, and honestly, I had to prevent myself starting to cry for the victims. We all felt this would change again our world and would be a test for democracy. Now, six months later, I still have that day in my mind and I think I'd never forget it. I remembered my mother telling she still exactly knows what see was doing when J.F. Kennedy was killed. For sure, I'll remember this day like she did! Suddenly, everything, even the danger felt very 'close': that same colleague told her sister was working at the Astoria hotel (I think it was this one), she really felt bad and could go home to her family. And in Brussels everbody was alarmed because of the possible danger for the Nato-headquarters, at Evere. Our boss let us watch television the whole afternoon. That evening, I think our whole country was watching TV. So, this is my story. I apologize if my English is rather basic, I'm a native speaker Dutch. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was almost 7:00 a.m. in Salt Lake City and I had been at work for about a ? hour. I'd turned on the radio and suddenly the music was interrupted by the news people coming on and saying the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. I pictured a little single engine plane hitting it. One of the DJ's said something about it must have been an accident and all of a sudden I felt in my heart that it wasn't an accident, that it had been deliberate. Then it seemed like just a few minutes later and they said another one had hit the WTC and I knew for sure then it was deliberate. I was still picturing fairly small planes, about the size of a commuter plane. When I walked to the cafeteria in our building they had a TV and were showing the 2nd plane fly into the building and I will never forget how shocked I was to see such a big plane. I remember thinking "how did they get such a big plane?" It didn't occur to me that there were other people on the plane who didn't want to be there. Then I started praying that everyone would get out of the WTC. My brain was screaming to those people in the buildings, "get out, get out". Then the first building collapsed! It happened so soon after it was hit, and I was sure that no one had gotten out and I started weeping. When I heard later that firemen and police officers had run into that building I was stunned. How had they dared to do that? I still can't believe how brave those men were. The news started reporting about the Pentagon and the plane crash in the woods. It was all so shocking. As news came in on who had done it I wondered who these people were who hated us so much. I felt like it was directed to me personally. How could there be that kind of hate in the world? I wondered if those men were shocked when they woke up in Hell. Our country helps so many other countries and all we get is hate for it. Are they jealous of us? Why do they hate us? I'm sure there is some big political reason but it just doesn't make sense to me. I called my family to make sure they were okay. I kept crying when I thought about all the dead. At the time I thought it might be 8 or 10 thousand so I was so grateful that it was only about 3,000 total. That still seems like a miracle to me that more people didn't die that day. Today is September 11, 2002. It's been a year since that day and I would have to say that I have changed in some ways. I was more distrustful of foreign people for awhile. I didn't want to be but I couldn't help it. I've come to realize how much I love my country. I appreciate the people in the armed services, the firemen and the policemen more than I ever thought I would. I love the American Flag. I was a volunteer at the Olympic Village during the Olympics in February and it made me feel better to see so many different countries come together. Everyone was so friendly and grateful to be there. Most of the athletes were so young, almost babies. I hoped that they would leave Salt Lake, loving the US and US citizens. Maybe they will be a voice of reason in their counties. I don't know, I just have that hope. And I hope that God will be with us always. I was thinking of the same thing I had been for about 4 months and that was of my boyfriend who was away at AIT for the Reserves. He hadn't yet been back home to see his new daughter and I couldn't wait till the day I got to see him. I had class at the daycare where my daughter goes and was upstairs when the first attact happened. We went down for lab class to be with the babies and that is hwen the teacher to me, in very sketchy details, what had just happened. at first I thought they were refuring to the Capital building in Kansas. It seem that the broadcast on the radio didn't tell much of what was going on. After about a min. of confusion we all started to begin to understand the initial information of the first attact. I remember sitting there holding my new born baby and hearing all of these rumors on the radio of coming attackes and countless ,presumed, high jacked planes. When the time came to walk back to the school for my last class of the day, I only went for mornings, I walked numbly into the building and through the halls. Ever door I passed was relaying the scenes of the attack on a TV. This was the first time I had a chance to see the images. I had to walk up two flights of stairs and I seemed to fly up them. As I came to my class everyone was perched atop a desk, face glued to the screen. I remember thinking " Where is the teacher? " he appeared a while later and quickly got a call on his cell phone. He spoke very hurridly and told me only he was leaving. I remember right after that, that he was in the air force for reserves.When the bell rang for class to dismiss I practically ran down the stairs and next door for my daughter. I picked her up and drove home. When I got there I turned on CNN and sat glued to the TV for what seemed like an eternity. I just sat in the rocked with the baby and let her sleep. I became addicted for next week. The ironic thing was I got my first real car that night and, as luck would have it, have had nothing but problems.I did get a call from the dad 3 days later. When I saw this, I was just hoping that everyone got out safe. But I guess that didn?t happen. If I were up in there, I would try to find some way to get out. Even if I were very injured, I would rather be injured than die up there. Something I will remember is everyone trying to run away. Some people were brave and tried to go up into the buildings to save people that were stuck up there. I don?t know what we would do if there were no police or firefighters. Life has changed in so many different ways. Airports are different now because it takes longer to go through the airport because they check everything you have very carefully. It can take up to an hour or two to get through security, but it will save lives. My house has changed by I can?t go anyplace without my mom knowing where I am. I have to go straight home after school. When I go places with my friends, I have to call her to let her know where I am. I think that all the things about September 11 should be remembered. I think that what really should be remembered is when it happened, and how people were brave to save other people. There is a lot of information on the news about who did it. I think that we should continue to look for who did it, and punish them for what they did. You just can?t fly a plane through a building and get away with it. This is America. We are free here. Before September 11th happened, we did not fly an American flag on our house. Since the attacks, we have flown a flag every day. I also think that you should decorate your whole house in flags because this is your life we are talking about. I used to think that the American flag was just a flag. Now I know that the flag really means something to me. Never really felt as an American even though I had lived here for 43 years. I grew up in Union City, New Jersey across the Lincoln Tunnel from NYC. I joined Merrill Lynch in 1977 and trained at Merrill Lynch for 6 months to prepare to take the Series 7 exam. Had daily lunch consisting of Pizza and Coke at Battery Park (commonly known as assault and battery Park) , next to the Old Church on Wall Street. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember waking up early on the morning of September 11th. I felt like something was out of place, but didn't know what. It was about 6:00 AM and I just couldn't sleep any longer. I thought I'd try and put myself to sleep with some boring movie or game show so I turned the TV on. What I saw next has been tatooed into my memory banks ever since. One of the morning shows had "breaking news" that one of the WTC had gone on fire. Nobody knew how or where, and all of a sudden, it was reported that an airplane had struck one of the towers, the north tower. Then, like most of America, I watched in horror as a second plane struck the south tower about a minute after I had tuned in. Numerous reports indicated that we were under attack, but nobody knew who or why, and a couple hours later the prime suspect was revealed. It was none other than Osama bin Laden, the man who for years tried to decapatate the almighty American economy and kill Americans overseas. It was the first ever attack of its kind. Not since Pearl Harbor was the U.S. hit by an attack, and nobody knew why anybody would want to hurt us. Fortunately, two of my friends who worked in WTC 2 came out of the building safely and have since moved back to Arizona.
