              <text>

We?re nearing the 1rst anniversary of September 11th. I remember that day like it had just happened. The past year just flew by. I was home that morning. I was supposed to go into work that afternoon. My mother called me to tell me that she was in the emergency room at the hospital where she works. She said she almost fainted and they were monitoring her blood pressure. I told her that I would go there to see how she was doing. I started to get ready. I showered, got dressed and flipped on the television. I turned to the channel that does only traffic and weather. I wanted to see how the traffic was moving on the Tappanzee bridge. They were talking about a huge fire at the World trade Center. I turned the channel and there it was, both Towers were on fire. I thought to myself how can this be? Then they replayed the video of the second plane hitting one of the towers. They said we were under terrorist attack. I then found out that the Pentagon was also hit by a plane. At first watching the video It looked like a small engine plane, but they said it was a passenger jet. My first instinct was to call my mother. All the phone lines were jammed. I could not get through to Anthony either. I called my brother Michael, in Florida. I got through. He told me they sent him home from work. I called the hospital?.someone told me that my mother had been released and she went home. I called my mother at home with my eyes still glued on the live coverage. She said before she left the hospital, one of the nurses, a good friend of hers, screamed ?my son is dead!? Her son was a fireman in the city. He did die, his name was Tom Foley. She knew this even before the worst was still to come. I hung up with my mother and then finally got a hold of Anthony. He was at his father?s house watching with me. He was talking of someone he knew who works for Cantor and Fitzgerald. He said his friend told him that this guy works on the 105th floor. As we spoke we watched in horror as one of the buildings imploded. Anthony yelled the building is falling! I didn?t believe it at first, even though it was happening in front of our eyes. The media was speechless. What can you say? Anthony wanted to get in touch with a friend who works in building seven, so I called my mom again. We were on the phone wondering about Pat? I hoped he was o.k. He works in Harlem. Surely every officer was down there. All we could do was wait. As we watched the news, the second tower began to collapse, I screamed, in horror, and cried, ?all of those people!? I never felt so unsafe in my life. I felt as though there must be more planes out there ready to do more. There were rumors on the news that there were still some airplanes still unaccounted for.
My mother heard from Pat, (her boyfriend), around 1 0r 2 in the afternoon. He said he was o.k. Thank God! Days and weeks past before he could tell us his account. All he did was work around the clock for a while.
He headed down there before the second plane hit. He witnessed too much. He remembered helping people coming up from the subway when he heard the 2nd plane hit. He said it was so loud. He was on church street when the 1st building began to fall. He said he ran for his life. People were running everywhere. Some people were running into stores for safety, but he said he could not stop running. He just wanted to get as far away as possible. He inhaled and swallowed the particles. He said it felt like big chunks in his mouth. He was covered from head to toe in white. When things calmed down that evening they hosed down the guys in the street to wash them down as they lined up. He then, before getting 3 hours of sleep and going back to work, threw out his uniform.
The horror had only begun. The faces of those poor people who lost there loved ones started to emerge. They would flash their loved ones picture on t.v. and ask if anyone can help them find him or her. It was incredibly sad. The wall of the missing. So chilling to think of all those faces, most likely dead. But there was still hope, it was early yet perhaps some survivors will be found. Unfortunately only 5 were found. I cannot imagine living through that. The horror of being up so high and choosing to jump to my death rather than burn alive. Some of the news stations did show people leaping to there death. I could not watch, it was unimaginable.
We must have watched t.v. for days. I would go to sleep at night and hope the next day was good news. ?We found 12 police officers!? A woman that evening said she got a call from someone saying they were caught under the rubble. He was down there with some police officers. She was full of shit , we later found out. She just wanted to get on t.v. It?s amazing how these events can bring out the best and the worst in people.
They say ?9-11, never forget? I won?t ever forget, it is forever fresh in my mind and still hard to believe.

<text> On the morning of September 11, 2001 I woke up to the T.V and when i saw the planes hitting the trade center I thought I was dreaming but then I saw my mom crying and I knew it was not a dream it was really happening. The first thing I did was go and get my sister out of school. Then I called my dad to see if he had heard what was happening. I remember watching the T.V all day long and seeing all the faces of those who had lost someone. and then turning the channel only to see people in Afganistan yelling and celebrating what these people did. I was disgusted and couldn't believe some one could even have the heart to do this. I didn't go to school that night it was canceled. I didn't go the next day either because there was a bomb threat so they shut 4 streets downtown. I couldn't believe this was happening not in America all my life I grew up thinking that no one could touch my Country but on the morning of 9-11-2001 that changed. I was afraid to do alot of things I only wanted to stay with my family. Then the First Lady came on the T.V and said don't let these people win don't let them change your life. So I got up and I did what I thought would make me feel better I started Volenteering even though it wasn't in New York I still felt better because I was doing my part in helping America get back to her old self. This is my Story! Shanna Marie Wong</text>

<text>I telecommute several days each week because of the nature of my job and the heavy traffic in the Washington, D.C. area. When the first plane hit the World Trade Center tower, I was preparing to participate in a staff meeting via telephone. My wife was watching television news and I looked up at the TV when she reacted to the breaking news.

I watched in shock, mesmerized, and then mechanically dialed the conference room at my office in Washington, DC where my fellow employees were assembled. Each day we start our morning staff meeting by asking, "What is new? What's happening today?" The answers are usually routine, but I had the sad duty of telling the assembled group that it appeared a large aircraft had just crashed in New York City in the Wall Street area.

Transfixed, I saw the second plane approach the other Trade Tower. The resulting crash reminded me of rocket attacks in Vietnam over 30 years ago...and without thinking I told my fellow employees that we were under attack...either a terrorist attack or military action in New York City.

We immediately broke off the call so they could prepare to evacuate our offices which are across the street from the White House. My phone rang just moments before the third plane hit the Pentagon...it was the office. Before we could exchange any further news, the explosion at the Pentagon reverberated through the phone in an eerie stereo effect and I asked if a plane had crashed in the District. We decided that the Pentagon had been the target just as it was announced on TV.

The shock and horror of the attack will remain with me forever. </text>

<text>I was sleeping in my second hour class, as usual, when a student quietly knocked on the door and asked to see Mr. Fletcher. He was immediately given an audience with our teacher, and when he had left our teacher quickly strode up to the television and turned it on. The second plane had just collided with the tower...and newsmen were amazed. They were still wondering whether it was an accident.
The people in my class were so shocked...we all tried to pass our feelings of with humour. I thought that this must be some cruel joke, it couldn't be true, we hadn't been attacked like this since Pearl Harbor. Immediately after class we went straight to our friends. I remember telling Lauren bleakly, "Two planes crashed into the twin towers in New York." She wouldn't believe me.
In third hour, all of us sat around the television, transfixed with horror. The Pentagon was hit. I wondered if the terrorists would leave our country anything. A lot of our teachers wouldn't let us watch the news, I guess they thought we might brood. At lunch, that was all we could talk about. We watched people cry in the halls. It was really depressing, and I kind of wished that we could leave the school, which by now was filled with halfbaked rumors and stuff.
My mom excused my sister from school, along with my cousin and I. We were joined by my sister's best friend, who had a waver that hour. We drove down to the coffee house, bought some coffee and hot chocolate, and talked for three straight hours. We talked about how scared we were, and how when it happened, we hadn't believed it. "I burst out laughing when I saw it," Valerie related.
Ylinne, my sister, told us how one of her classmates had started crying when he recieved a telephone message from the office. His grandma, who lived in New York, was safe. She had just called.
After that, we went home. Our cleaning lady Marcel was there, and the television was on. But it was old, stale news...we grew tired of watching the horrors happen, and hearing speculations about how many people had died. We turned the television off, but that left a void. I felt cut off.
I remembered how people had cried at school, and many anchors had broken down while reporting. I was unable to cry, and that lack of grief was horrendous to me. I felt like a monster, like I didn't have any emotions at all. I still can't cry.
My sister started to cry at dinner, when we watched the Palestinian children rejoicing in the streets. It seemed disgusting that others hated us that much.
Afterwords, I went to the Internet and looked up all the stuff I could find on the World Trade Center. A message board had been placed at the site where we could vent our feelings about what had happened. I remember reading one man's comment that New Yorkers sucked and they deserved it. How can you watch a person having to make a choice between death by fire and death by air and come out unchanged? I was blinded with anger.
Another man voiced his bigoted opinions about Muslims. I was really disgusted. Having heard echoes of his voice in the innocent voices of my classmates made me extremely angry. It was bigots like him that made our world so scary.</text>

<text>It was a very normal morning as usual. I was sleeping in my bed with a sweet dream. The annoying phone rang to break the peace of the morning. A very rush and loud sound through my ears.-"Hurry! Wake up! Watch t.v.!"
It was really an unforgettable morning. I was shocked to see such a cruel picture in which the airplane was attacking the buildings, and the buildings were falling down in just a few seconds. I thought I was dreaming. But when I saw those people scattered with dust and tears, hundreds and hundreds papers flew in the air, the firefighters busy here and there, etc. I finally realized that was an unbelievable disaster. I was so angry at those people who made this world chaotic, but except for praying and praying, what could I do?
Time went very slowly that morning. It was torturing to see the t.v. screen over and over again. I kept telling myself-Don't let the hate between human beings disappoint my enthusiastic heart.

<text>Our 17-year-old daughter, Victoria, who was adopted by my husband and myself from Guatemala 3 years ago became a US citizen on Valentine's Day, 2001. On 9/11/2001, John Booker, her father and my husband, was working in Argentina, and she and I were preparing her for school. I heard on the radio that something had happened at the World Trade Center and urged her to turn on the television---to see the World Trade Center on fire. She turned to me with the eyes of a child who has already seen too much horror in her life [including losing both birth parents by the age of 7 and being put on the streets of the very dangerous Guatemala City to beg for coins at age 3]. Her face collapsed in tears and she collapsed in my arms. The World Trade Centers collapsed to her growing terror.

After a while, she agreed that she could go to school---if I would work at home [only 1-1/2 miles from school] that day. She went to school and I tried to work, frankly unable to hold a coherent thought. When I picked her up at the end of the day, she was so sad, this beautiful child we wanted to give happiness to. "One of my teachers was crying," she said, "She's from New York and she's afraid her friends were in there." And later, "You and Papa made me an American, Mom, and now I'm a target."</text>

<text>I was driving to work when I heard on the radio about the first plane hitting the tower....and then the second tower a bit later. The disc jockeys were trying to confirm this...they thought it must be a really bad hoax. Then they confirmed it. I got to work and some had gathered in our conference room to watch the news on the TV in there. We heard about the Pentagon being hit next. We had two co-workers in D.C. working at the Marriott near there who were putting on one of our medical meetings. When we were able to reach them via phone, they said they felt the hotel shake and people were wondering what had happened.
Our office closed down at 9am PST that day. We were stunned and saddened and worried about our co-workers at our NY based offices and our co-workers in D.C.
On a more personal level I was worried about a close friend who was a police officer in NY at Plaza One. I was not able to get hold of him and took several days before he could get through to let me know what he was going through, but that he was safe.
I hope people never forget how precious and fragile life can be....and to make the most of each day and not forget to share the good things with others...share our love and be quick to forgive....listen to one another and share our feelings and be proud that when a crisis hit, we were humane, we gave our prayers and our energy and our money and whatever else that was needed to aide others.
I did not lose anyone that day in NY or D.C. or PA., but, that doesn't mean my heart and prayers are not always with those who did. </text>

<text> On the tragic day of September 11th, our school was having a bus evactuation drill. The bus driver directing the drill for my bus had told us the Trade Center was bombed. Little did we know, the pentagon, our mighty military headquaters, had also been desolated. One section of the Pentagon and both of the towers that stood so tall crumbled before our nation. I learned the full story when visiting my mother in the hospital. I was mourning for the victims and their families more than anything. Our great nation was struck at the knees and fell, but the will of its people made it stand again, taller than ever.

Since the bombing, I have said a prayer for the victims and their families as well as all innocents killed in our bombings. Now more than ever I realized how much our lives are worth and how quickly they can be ripped away from us. Now the ruins of the Trade Center lay desolate, moved not by the machinery assigned to pick it up, but by the compassion our county yielded to all that have died. Every I wake up I am grateful to live. Every breathe is noticed. The food, clothes, roof over my head, and love from my parents is not taked for granted nor will it ever be forgotten. I look at life content with what I have and I have no desire to change it in anyway.

Not only should thing be taken from this experience, but people should remember also. We must remember not to let our anger speak for us because recklessness will only cause more pain. We must remember the innocents that died in the four planes. The Trade Center, and the Pentagon, as well as all the innocents people in Afghanistan that were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most of all, we must remember and continue to give and share our experiences so that this day that made history will not be forgotten. All in all, I feel shaken by the tragic events but more importiantly educated and compassionate about this nation; The United States of America.</text>

<text>I woke early on September11,2001 because we had an appointment, so I turned on the television and I seen the aftermath of the first plane. I recall thinking how sad and what an accident. Then I watched as the second plane hit and thats when I knew that everything had just changed in America, my children woke and they seen me watching t.v. and that I was upset, they then went and woke up there daddy
and few the first part of that morning we watched as the horrors of that day unfolded before our eyes.. I watched my children cry and they asked why? I couldn't answer. I then watched my husband cry as the towers went down. I must say that was very hard, for all of us. I told the children to go on to school, and they did but not without my promise that if anything else bad happened I would come and get them. My youngest made me say "Ilove you" more than twenty times and I did this for her and for myself, I stayed by the t.v. for most of the day just numb and sad, never did I think this would've or even could've happened. I did a lot of crying the frist week, my heart still aches for all those who lost someone, my heart wishes them love and peace, forevermore. My thanks and prayers go out to all of America.</text>

TYLER'S 2ND PEROID ENGLISH CLASS.THE MOMENT I HEARD THAT OUR COUNTRY WAS ATTACKED BY TERRORISTS, I JUST WANTED TO RUN AWAY AND CRY. AS I WAS WATCHING THE NEWS, I SAW THE PLANES CRASHING INTO BUILDING AFTER BUILDING, AND IT TOOK ME BY SUPRISE BECAUSE IT HAPPENED SO SUDDENLY. I ALSO FELT A LOT OF PAIN, NOT ONLY FOR THE MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN WHO LOST SOMEONE VERY CLOSE AND SPECIAL TO THEM, BUT ALSO FOR OUR COUNTRY AS ONE. ABOUT A WEEK AFTER THE ATTACKS, I STILL FELT VERY DEPRESSED AND MOURNFUL;MORE THAN I EVER HAVE FELT BEFORE IN MY LIFE. RIGHT NOW I DO NOT FEEL SAFE,NOR WILL I EVER, BECAUSE IT COULD HAPPEN ANY TIME, ANYWHERE, JUST LIKE ON 9-11.THIS RECENT TRAGEDY HAS EFFECTED ME IN A WAY NOT EVEN WORDS CAN EXPLAIN, SOME IN GOOD WAYS, AND SOME IN BAD.I THINK OUR COUNTRY, AS A WHOLE, HAS ENCOUNTERED A LOT OF PAIN AND TEARS, BUT THAT JUST GOES TO PROVE, OUR COUNTRY CAN GET THROUGH ANYTHING IF WE WORK HARD TOGETHER;AND I'M 100% POSITIVE THAT EVERYONE ELSE LIVING IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FELLS EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. </text>

<text>On September 11th for some reason I did not turn on the T.V. that morning as I usually do, so I did not know what was going on. I dropped off my two boys at school and came directly to work. When I got to my desk it was about 8:10a.m. in the morning and my supervisor said that our Boss just called to tell us to put on the T.V. that a plain just hit the Twin Towers. We all went to the back to watch, and decided to put the T.V. up front whare everyone can see. The silence was overwhelming and the shock and screams when the second plain hit was scary, then to find out about the other two plains was just two much for me. Here I was a mother with two sons expecting to have a third and I just held my stomach and cried for how long I don't remember. The thought of my kids being raised at this time and bringing a new life into this world really baught tears to my eyes. I just wanted to go home and hug my kids, husband, and family. My family and I kept in touch throughout the day all just praying and telling each other we loved each other. Thank God our family out in N.Y were all doing fine. I just prayed and still pray for peace. </text>

<text>I don't really remember the begining of my day on September 11. But for the rest of my life, what followed will be forever embedded in my memory. I had been at work for about thirty minutes when someone came into my office and asked if we heard what had happened to one of the World Trade Center buildings. The first thing that jumped into my head was a bomb. It had happened before, and I figured it had happened again. I quickly went to the CNN internet site. From that moment on I was glued to my computer screen. Nothing else seemed to matter. At first I thought it was an accident. I had never heard of a commerical airliner used as a terrorist weapon. But as I was watching the news unfold, I saw the second tower being hit. Then I knew it was no accident. My heart was beating fast, and I started to shake. This couldn't be happening. Not in the U.S. One of the first things that came into my mind was Pearl Harbor. I had heard older people talk about Pear Harbor, but because it was before my time, my feelings were at a distance. Now I truly new what the nation was feeling, that fateful December morning, because I was feeling it now. My heart ached for all those people who had died, and more who will have to deal with the loss. Although I was lucky enough not to have any family lost, I still grieved as a citizen of the US. It hit so close to home, as if it was someone from my family. In a way it was. Still this day, anytime I read a story or see pictures of that day, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. I have tears in my eyes. The emotions are fresh again. I wonder how long it will take to get over it. Then I realize that I never want to get over, not that I could. I realized that this was history in the making, and all of us are front row witnesses. That someday, way in the future, when all of this seems like a Pear Harbor to other generations, I will be able to share my memories, and tell of the countless heroes who lost and gave their lives on September 11, 2002.</text>

<text>On September 11, 2001, I was in my classroom at P.S. 191 in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.

As a NYC Teaching Fellow, I only started teaching the day before, and admired my view from the fourth floor; Queens, the Brooklyn Bridge and a view of downtown including the World trade Center towers.

People were entering my room all morning long. At first it was computer technicians, the rest, I didn't know. I thought they were looking at something technical.

With a roomful of kindergartners, I first noticed the smoke across my windows. I thought that this was odd and when I looked out the window, and thought, "My God, the Twin Towers are on fire!" I thought I'd best take a photo since this seemed extraordinary and when I focused my view finder, I saw the South Tower collapse in front of my eyes. I rubbed them and thought the smoke was playing tricks with my eyes.

At 12:30 when I was scheduled for lunch, the librarian asked if I wanted to have lunch in the library with the other teachers. She said, "We have the television set up." I thought the teachers were watching soap operas during lunch so I thought I'd go out of politeness - just this once.

When I saw my first news report, I didn't get it - planes crashing into the WTC? Did the pilot have a heart attack? Why wasn't the plane ditched in the harbor? I was quickly updated on the situation and fortunately was able to contact my family. I didn't know anyone who was lost that day, yet I feel as if I did. I imagine that of the people who were lost, I've passed them on the highway, sat next to one or two on the subway, or perhaps, taught their children
