Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I wasn't on a plane or in an airport. I wasn't in NY, Washington D.C. or Western PA. My family members, though at the center of the attack in NY all survived. My friends, though running for their lives, and watching with sickening horror at the events unfolding, lived. I am one of the millions so close to the events of that day, yet so far. I watched with horror at the World Trade Center burning, the Pentegon crumbling in on itself, and the smoke rising from a field. I kept walking back to my desk from the TV and making calls. One to my mother. One to my best friend from high school who worked in NY. One to US Airways to cancel the flight I was supposed to take Friday, September 14. One to my best friend who lived outside of Pittsburg. I didn't see the Towers fall. But I saw the aftermath in the firefighters' faces as they went back in to rescue those they had lost. I didn't think I had a right to grieve. To be angry, and upset and vengeful, yes, but not to grieve. Then I saw two fighter jets patroling the skys over NY and Washington, DC. And a carrier ship was making its way up from Virginia to NY. And it struck me that in an instant, when the first plane was hi-jacked at 8:46 AM that morning, MY world had changed. Our airspace would forever be patroled. We would forever be wary of another attack being carried out on a beautiful, random day for no reason. There would be alerts and warnings and things being done by our Government that we don't even want to know about to protect our borders, our interests, our lives. So I mourned. I still cry when I see the images of the havoc wrought that day. And I grieve, along with those who lost loved ones, for the lives lost, for the innocence lost, and a world changed. Well I had missed the first plane crash,and was wondering what was going on. I thought why are these people gathering up here, watching this on our t.v. instead of going home watching it on theirs. Well then I saw the second plane crash and I realized what was going on. I knew than that my life would never be the same again. My hearts went out to all those people. It really tore me up inside when it told about all those people on the planes calling on cell phones to their loved ones, telling them bye, that they were fixing to die.There is just not any words that can explain how that affected me. I still think about that. I think about what was going on in those poor peoples minds. You know it had to be so horrifing to know that you are about to die, or lose your loved ones and there is nothing you can do to help them. Everyones lifes was touched by all of this and will never forget this horrible nightmare. The only thing we can all do is help the victims loved ones in any way possible, to try to deal with this. Everyone knows their loved ones has to die sometime or the other, but not a senseless death by the hands of a sick twisted monster like the terroist.We have to live one day at a time, and I just hope through the years to pass, each victims family can get the courage to go on with life and gain strength to keep on fighting so nothing like this happens again. My heart goes out to all of them, and I will always remeber each and everyone of those precious angels that lost their lives, and I will always rember their families. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I drove to the teacher's conference early in the morning and was listenting to music, so I didn't hear the news. However, during our meetings, they interrupted us to watch the news and tell us all the happenings. All of us were crying and praying at the same time. They gave us a break and we called our loved ones to check on them. I checked with my mom who was at home and she hadn't heard from my sister and her husband who were vacationing in England at the time. We heard from them later that day, and found they would not be returning for awhile since no airplanes flew for a week it seemed. I called all my family quickly and checked to make sure everyone was alright and safe. I was truly blessed to have my family intact after such a horrific event. After the break, they released us to go back to our schools and to be with our students. My 8th graders were nervous and scared and by the end of the day, most had parents come pick them up. It was an intensely emotional time, and today on the one year anniversary, again, it is emotional. To know that so many lost their lives and now families are having to makeup that loss, is tragic. Thank God we live in a nation where we can pray, and we can believe in God. Our nation will be healed as the Church begins to pray and we focus on what is most important! They not only affected the people of the World Trade buildings and the Pentagon, but people all across the nation. These events changed the lives of all American citizens. The morning of these events, I was sitting in school, along with millions of other children, thinking it was another, ordinary day. However, I was sadly mistaken. The events that were about to take place were in the least bit ordinary. I went to my first period class, just as I always did, and then on to second period. This is where I was about to realize that this day was going down in history. At 9:00 a.m., I was sitting in a chair watching CNN, as our teacher explained to all of us what just happened. We watched the horrific sights of the attacks on the World Trade Center. We were able to watch the first attack that occurred only a few minutes before we entered the classroom. Then, as we were sitting there, we watched the second attack live. I remember the looks on the faces of my friends and classmates. None of us had ever seen anything like it before. We hoped to never see anything like it again. I will never forget the next few sights that I was about to see; they changed my life forever. Sitting home, watching the news, later that night, I saw the most awful sights, which I have seen so far in my life. I hope to never see anything that awful ever again. There were huge explosions, hundreds of people running through the streets of New York City, with blood running down the sides of their faces, trying to escape the falling debris that was flying everywhere. Even though these sights were bad, the sights that were on the news the next day couldn't compare to the previous day. There were thousands of policemen, firemen, and even volunteers off of the streets helping to clean up as much as they could of what was left of the World Trade Buildings. They were pulling bodies out of the wreck that once stood as the tallest and proudest buildings in America. One of the most emotional parts of watching all this was to see policemen and firemen on the streets of New York City, with their hats off, and tears slowly running down their heartbroken faces. You could see the severity of the tragedy in their eyes. The thought of knowing that there were families out there, wondering if their son, daughter, husband, wife, or other family member was one of the unfortunate ones to become a victim of one of the few terrorists attacks on American soil was heartbreaking. These events not only affected the people of New York City, but people all across the globe. The tragic events that occurred this day, will forever be remembered in the hearts of all American citizens. America has changed in many ways since this day. The United States has always been thought of as a land of freedom, opportunity, and a land of security. However, with the events that occurred, American citizens now realize that America is as vulnerable to the enemies of the world, just as other countries of the world are. Since this horrible day, America has changed in many ways. Some for the better and others for the worse. A good thing that came out of these tragedies, if any, would have to be that now, America is not as care free with the safety of its citizens. We all take more precautions now, and this has opened our eyes to the evils of the world. One change for the worse is that since these events citizens of America live in more fear than is necessary. You cannot go about your life living in a box, fearing every part of the world. Fear is a person's biggest enemy, more than any other human or living thing. I heard frantic talking and got to my english class, where i saw the National News showing the two scenes (WTC and the new Pentagon one). I thought it was some sick movie joke or something- it couldn't be real. but when i found out what had happened within a minute or so, I wasn't so shockingly surprised. There had been terrorist warnings all summer long abroad in relation to U.S. military operations. Also, I figure we'd be attacked someday since we're so powerful (people jealous of us) and are involved extensively in the Mid-East and exploitation of third world countries. It was crazy. I looked out my classroom window - I could see the smoke rising up from the Pentagon. It was surreal and sickening. I thought it was armageddon; i had no idea what was going on. I saw the towers collapse on tv, although i didn't witness the 2nd plane's crash into the tower - many of my friends and much of America had seen this. All the phone circuits and internet services were on overload, and the school was on lockdown. we knew a 4th plane was loose, and was probably headed to D.C., perhaps the Capitol (which is a few blocks from Gonzaga),so were freaked. I didn't know what to think. We all felt a huge shake, like some explosion - it was the sonic boom of a fighte jet, but it made us uneasy at that time. (this was about 20 or 30 min. after the Pentagon was hit). I left school early for home with my dad and a few friends. We listened to Tom Brokaw on the radio, talking with witnesses in New York and D.C. - it was so sad. I remember hearing a caller cry on the radio about how he had seen a person in a wheelchair who couldn't make it down the stairs. All I know is I felt a freaky emptiness - like Jesus could hardly help. Of course He all helped us out with the healing as He does. Well this is freakin long, sorry. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just relocated to Virgina Beach, VA on September 4, 2001. Exactly one week prior to the bombings. I called my mother. I was afraid that I had awakened her. She told me she was up because a neighbor had just called her to tell her a plane had crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I told her that was impossible because the World Trade Center was a no fly zone. I turned on the television just in time to see the other plane heading for the other tower. "That's no accident" I told my mother. "That plane is intentionally flying into the tower". Then, the ball of fire. All my mother and I could say was "Oh my God, what is going on?" We watched the news together and then it happened - the towers collapsed! I remember crying so much I had to hang up the telephone. I remember saying over and over again "why, God, why?" Just one week prior to the horror I had lived in New York City. Just one week prior to the horror I had worked in New York City. Why was this happenening? All I could think of was all of those people still in those buildings. Why? I remember the pain was so intense in my chest that I could hardly breathe. Why was this happening? One year to the day later, it still hurts. I still cry. The who has been answered, but still not the why. I pray for the families of the victims of 9-11 everynight. I pray that they remain strong and remember and know that the hearts, prayers and love of all Americans are with them. I have a new found respect for New York's Bravest (the New York City Fire Department). They lost more people than any other rescue squad. I have returned to New York since that day but I cannot go into lower Manhattan. I can't look towards the spot where the Towers used to stand. I can't remember them not being a part of the New York City skyline. After all this time, I still cry. I still hurt. The only good thing that has come out of this tragedy is America has realized that we are all Americans. No matter what our ethnicity, we are all brothers beneath the skin. We have also learned that we are not inpenitrable to attack and we have learned that we are a country that responds to disaster by coming together. In God we trust and united, forever, we stand. I put on the coffee, grabbed the paper from the day before, and sat down in front of the tv to start my day. gotta have my news. I wasn't prepared for what I was about to see. I have direct tv, and my abc, cbs, nbc and fox, come out of New York. No sooner Had I turned on my TV, there was a news break. Plane hits WTC....I couldn't believe what i was seeing. How could a pilot be so stupid, I asked myself. Like he didn't see them comming! I watched in disbelief, fire comming from what seemd to be about 10 story's. Those poor people. They didn't even know what hit them. All I kept thinking was, that stupid ass pilot. What was he, drunk or something. How do you just slam into a building? i hope they sue the hell out of that airline. Then the unthinkable happened. Another plane, hit the other tower! As i watched the clip, i new this was no accident. My heart felt like it was going to pop right out of my chest. For the first time in my life, i felt scared. How could somethig like this happen. This is the United States of America! Who could be so stupid? I watched in horror as the events unfolded. Seeing people jump to their death. GOD help us! All of those people in those building! I knew there was no way for all of them to get out. Now, my heart was in my throat. I couldn't swallow or nothing. I went into shock... By this time, they were telling us about the people in the planes. How they must of felt, seeing those buildings headed their way. Suddenly, my eyes started to swell, and the tears started flowing. Uncontrolably, i sat and cried. Something I hadn't done since I lost my dad to cancer in 1991. Now, anger was setting in. Kill all of the bastards. Whipe them right off the map. Cowards. I was at home on sept. 11th, sitting outside on the deck having coffee with my husband and parents who were visiting us......A neighbor called to find out if I was flying, as she had the news on and was watching the disaster unfold.....We immmediately turned on CNN and were horrified by what we saw. While watching this tragedy I knew instantly that these planes were deliberately being flown into the World Trade Center. All I could think about was what the passengers and crew were going through, knowing their lives were ending. Then my thoughts went to those people inside the tower, how would they make it out alive. We were glued to the television all day, trying to comprehend how this could have happened ,not only in New York but in Pennsylvania and Washington. I don't think there has been a time when I have felt more vunerable in relation to my job. I called all my friends and co-workers that I thought might be out there flying to make sure they were okay. I also had numerous people call me that day to make sure I was at home. I didn't return to flying until October as I was off for the month of September. I think having this time off allowed for me to absorb what had happened, come to terms with it and better prepare myself for returning to flying. I wasn't afraid to return to work but I found myself a more "aware" flight attendant. To this day I take my job more seriously, I am more observant of my passengers, more communicative with my passengers and crew. I know now that anything is possible in the air and I have to be better prepared to handle whatever comes my way while on duty. I am not an "AirHostess", that term went out with the mini-skirts and go-go boots worn by our predocessors. I am a Saftey Professional and my attitude and mannerisms need to reflect this. I want my passengers to have the confidence that I am there to make sure that they are as safe as possible and that I will act accordingly if an incident occurs. I can't project this if my mind is wandering on other things, or I am neglecting my duties. I can only hope that those I work with feel the same way so we can work together as a team. Its funny the things we remember about previous trips. After hearing later that this team of terrorists probably flew on different airlines to determine who would be a better target and what flights would best serve their purpose, I recalled one of those trips. I was flying senior on a trip months before and remember the First Class manifest having alot of names on it that I couldn't pronounce. There is usually one or two names on a manifest that are unusual but these names were Middle Eastern and there were at least 5 of them, evenly dispersed in a full First Class cabin. I wondered if they were all related and going to maybe a reunion or something. Thinking about this now gives me chills, could it have been those terrorists observing our flight, I don't know. What I do know is that what happened on Sept 11th could have happened to me, anyone of us as flight attendants knows this. I can only hope that the new security measures that are now a part of our working lives will prevent this from happening again. I can only hope that it doesn't take another tragedy like the one on Sept 11th to make our country, our airports, more diligent about security measures. I can't change what a terrorist thinks and does but I can change my own attitude and what I do while on the job. What I do now makes me a better Flight Attendant,and that is the best thing that I can do for myself , my coworkers and my passengers. Tell us your story: My cousin was stationed at the Pentagon on September 11 and all I could think about that morning was him, thank goodness he wasn't in the Pentagon when the plane hit. I felt so bad for everyone who had been killed or lost a family member that horrible day. I come from a military family (many generations of my family have served as did I) so we understand the risks involoved. It is a tradition that males in my family join the military, I am the one and only female in my family to serve in the military. We have served in every branch of the military, I hope some day my children will serve this great nation as well. I couldn't believe it when the plane hit the first building but I knew in my gut it was no accident and I was sickened and saddened by what I saw, when I saw the second plane hit I was mad. My anger grew when a third plane hit the Pentagon, as well as my fear for cousin's safety. When the 4th plane went down I knew that it too had been part of a terrorist act and I cried out in anger for all the lost lives. When I heard of the bravery shown by the passengers on the 4th jet I was very proud of them, proud for America. My children went to school that morning, even as I wanted to keep them home safe, the thought of letting them out of my sight terrified me. I knew it was best for them to go to school, their world had been turned upside down, they needed some normalcy. I returned home to watch the CNN all day and just bawl, there would no relief, no surprise announcement that this was just hoax, a bad dream. No, the day that dawned so brightly would go down in history as one of the darkest days in our history. It was the worst days in our history, but also our brightest, because we showed what we are truely made of, compassion, bravery, friendship, love, heroism, empathy, generosity, determation, and strenght beyond expectation. As this went through my mind and heart I prayed for my cousin, my family, New York, Pennsylvanian, and our counry. As I am on inactive reserve status I wondered if I would once again be called upon to defend my country and if I was ready for the challenge. I was so mad at that point, I prayed I would be once again called upon to serve my country, I would gladly serve in the greatest Air Force in the world. I love my country and my family, I would do anything to protect them from the evil we faced that day and evil I am sure we will face again in the future. When class started, our teacher asked us to write an essay about how we felt about the world. The day went by like any other day, only everyone was crying, and I couldn't figure out why. When I got home from school that day my mom was home, which was weird because my mom never got home so early. I went in the house and asked her why she was home so early. That is when I hear about the attack on the World Trade Center. The next thing that popped into my head was Jimmy and Chris. Jimmy and Chris are me two older cousins who are like my big brothers. They had both finished their training for the army just the week before. Everyone was talking about how people were being sent to New York and Washington, D.C. to make sure nothing else went wrong. They were both sent to the White House with a bunch of other troops. The day they left was the day I thought I would never see two of the people I love in my life again, because everyone said that the terrorists were trying to find a way to attack the White House and that?s where they were going to be for the next several months helping out. For those months Chris and Jimmy were going between New York and D.C. helping out wherever they were needed. Once my two cousins were sent to help out my cousin Ashley and I decided that we needed to do something to help out. We collected money from numerous people around our neighborhoods and got donations from area stores to make care packages. We sent the care packages to New York fire departments with our neighbor that was going to help clean up debris from the fallen towers. At that time we felt that if wasn?t much but we were two teenagers, what more could we do? When my neighbor returned home he brought back Polaroid pictures of the firemen with their care packages we made. Right before we left the teacher from next door came in and told our teacher that he talked to his wife and that the Twin Towers were hit in New York City. At the time I didn't really understand the importance of this. I just thought an airplance accidentally hit a tower. I had no information on it at all. But the next period our principal came over the intercom and told us what happened and also told us how another plane hit the Pentagon. A lot of people in my class were worried about their parents and trying to use teachers phones to find out about them. By the end of the day I knew what was going on and was affected by it, but it made me realize how important it is to live in our country with the freedoms that we have. Tell us your story: 5 years later; approximately 1-1/2 years after 9/11, i became divorced from my wife and left my home and three children behind. my relationship fell apart as i steadily spiraled into alcoholism and addiction. i was an addict from the start and in hindsight i think my inability to cope with my feelings was impacted negatively by that day -how could it not? i found myself tired all the time, no doubt the result of depression, without the will to do much of anything except self medicate. today 9/11/06, i am nearly a year and a half sober, having begun a new life. i have come to terms with my feelings and recieved counseling on the matter. i spent the morning reflecting, reliving the horror i witnessed. emotionally i was upset, and made a few phone calls to get out of my head. in particular i called 3 other men i endured that day with. a fourth i have lost contact with. i recalled how we seperated in full flight for our lives. i felt guilty recalling how i flew passed an older woman as i was gripped in fear. i think i will make that a tradition in years to come, calling those fellows to say hi. i dont often talk of the experience, downplaying it, knowing others had lost much more or had endured much more. i choose to keep silent, somehow i feel my story isnt that valid. i am grateful for this site, it provides a kind of anonymous dumping ground, sort of like writing a message in a bottle. thanks. Although I usually had a radio on in the background while I worked, for some reason I had never turned it on that morning. "A plane crashed into the World Trade Center," she continued. I quickly typed in The Washington Post's Web address, but my browser just kept indicating it was "contacting host." Then my friend said, "Well they have the news on in the conference room." I went down to the conference room and there were 3 people sitting watching a large screen TV showing images of black smoke pouring out of both of twin towers. The second tower had been struck just before I walked to the conference room. One of the people in the conference room said, "Another plane just flew into the other tower." I sat down and listened as the television commentators tried to come to grips with what happened. They were all just beginning to realize that perhaps the first crash had not been an accident. As I strained to hear the reports, I became aware of rather heated discussion in the conference room. A couple of guys were attempting to prepare the room for a conference call and we were all in the way. I decided not to add to the overall confusion and returned to my office. A couple of people stopped by my office to ask if I was aware of what was going on up in New York. I had turned my radio on and scanned the internet but I discovered that beyond bulletins reporting the crashes there were few details. I did my best to focus on work. I wanted to know what was going on but felt as though I needed to keep working until the news agencies had more to report. The window in my office has a magnificent view of the Capitol Dome. At one point I looked up from my computer and out at the Capitol. The dome was framed by billowing black smoke. I could tell that the smoke was coming from somewhere beyond the Capitol building itself, but something was definitely not right. I step out my door to ask if anyone else had seen the smoke and all I found was silence. There wasn't a soul in sight. I wandered around the suite and discovered a couple of people in an office watching a TV. When I mentioned the smoke they told me that the Pentagon had been hit by an airplane. We stood there watching and making uncomfortable small talk until the first tower collapsed. Stunned, I wandered back out into the suite and my boss walked by quickly and said that they had closed the building. I tried to call my wife at work, but the line was busy so I quickly gathered my things and headed out the door. As I walked to the elevator, I passed a colleague who was a Metro rider. We had already been hearing conflicting reports that the Metro was jammed or not running so I offered him a ride home which he accepted. I made the unfortunate mistake of driving one block in the direction of the Capitol. Immediately we came to a stand still as employees of the Senate offices flooded across the streets toward Union Station. As soon as possible we inched our way to the side streets to get away from the pedestrian traffic. We went due north away from the Capitol. As I drove, my colleague scanned the radio and we tried to piece together what happened. At some point we realized the other tower in New York must have also collapsed. Every intersection had police cruisers and a group of DC police officers keeping the traffic flowing northward. It was amazing how quickly the authorities were out in the streets. We found it very reassuring. As soon as we were able, we turned west about 20 or 30 blocks north of the Capitol. Driving was then very easy and we rather quickly arrived at my colleague's apartment in northwest DC. I asked him to call my wife or at least my answering machine at home to let them know I was on my way. The ride home was very eerie. Whenever I neared a Metro stop there were waves and waves of people in business dress walking along the streets. Traffic slowed when the side streets I was on crossed a major intersection, which I attributed to the police presence. My wife was home when I got there. She had seen the Pentagon smoke from her office as well, and she was visibly shaken. I drove my younger daughter's babysitter home and was home by around 1pm. My older daughter attends the elementary school behind our house, but the parents were informed that we were to pick up our children at the normal hour. The school closed its shades, locked its doors and conducted classes as usual. They made the judgement to do nothing to alarm the children and leave it to the parents to tell their kids what they felt was appropriate later that evening. My wife and I took turns watching the news and playing with the kids until their bedtime. Then she and I watched the reports until around 11pm. At that point my wife just couldn't stand to watch the same horrifying images anymore and went to bed to read. I watched the news reports until around 3am on the 12th. We went through first block just like normal. After break we went into our second block when we got an anouncment that we weren't in any danger, That's when we turned on the television. when we turned on the television the second plane had already hit. In the back of my mind i was thinking we were going to war. If just one plane hit it would have looked like an accident, but the second plane hit and one hit the pentegon. Every one that i knew that had military parents were going crazy. Kids were crying thinking that there parents were dead. I stayed at school that day because my parents didn,t work anywhere close to the pentegon. I was trying to help comfort some friends that had family that worked around that area. The attacks really didn't affect my family, but i could imagine what it must be like to lose loved ones by a tradgety like that. I had the dream of joining the U.S.M.C. but i wasn't sure now I'm positive i want to join. I love my country, but i always took it for granted like most of us do. I was in Mr. Keating's class in Marlborough middle school in Massachusetts. My teacher was called to leave the room and came back with an infuriated face, red and full of anger. Then it became sad. He didn't say much about what happened, so I was worried about my father who worked for American Airlines. That afternoon I went home and noticed that my dad's car. I was relieved because my father was safe. Not knowing what happened I selfishly wondered whether my father still had his job. When I came inside, I could hear the news so I walked into the kitchen. I saw my mother sitting and crying. My father was talking to my grandfather about his job. I ended the day thinking about the end of the world. I think this because revelations talk about large metal-like birds destroying the world. A prophet might have thought Planes were metal birds. The reason 9-11 has changed my life is I now worry much more. There is worry of more attacks on our country. Also, due to flight 587, my family thought that my father might get laid off, but his high seniority position allowed him to keep his job. My father received a raise to stay with American Airlines. It might sound unfair to have received a raise when people were out of jobs. Others were grieving over lost family members, my father feeling sorry did donate money to the 9-11 funds. I think we should remember the innocent lives destroyed by the 9-11 attacks. We must remember not to be racist as well. One of my friends was shot due to his skin color. His uncle wasn't even Middle Eastern. His skin color determined whether he would get shot with an illegal automatic weapon or not. This happened just a few months after September 11th. I personally believe my friend?s uncle was just as much a victim of the tragedies, if not more so than the people in the towers. To shoot members of your own country is even more disgusting to me then what the terrorists did. The shooter was caught but will probably be out on bail soon. These things should be remembered. The victims of the terrorist's attack and the victims of racism due to the attacks should be remembered. Title A name given to the resource September 11 Digital Archive Stories Description An account of the resource This collection is the bulk of the archive, representing the reactions and experiences of thousands of individuals beginning in 2002. 911DA Story 911DA Story: Story Tell us about what you did, saw, or heard on September 11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on the phone with our supplier and she told me a plane had flown into the world trade tower. As we spoke of how tragic this was another plane hit tower 2 and she said she thought it was planned and a attack on our nation was happening. I went to the other offices to let my fellow workers know what was happening. I told the group in a meeting I was sorry to interrupt but that two planes had flown into the world trade towers and one of our co-workers burst into tears as she had a freind who worked there. (Thank God her freinds office had moved into another building and he was fine.) We sent for a tv and spent the better part of the day in shock watching an event that was too horrible to imagine. I went to prayer and have not stopped since. I wear my t-shirts that tell of my support for my fellow Americans and I pray over the families of the deceased all the time. I had just lost my Mother and was so glad I did not have to tell her what had happened in New York. I also remember the firemen and police and rescue people and their families in my prayers. These people are heros and I shake the hand and hug any firemen I see. They did not give up even when they knew no one else was alive. This was such a wake up call for us in America. We are not invincible without working together. May God always be with us no matter where we have to be. One Nation Under God....We will always Remember 9-11-01. Another day in infamy.
