<text>On September 11, 2001 I was on the 88th floor of tower 2 getting ready to have a bagel with someother co-workers when we felt something hit. We we're sure what had happened. Only that the building shook, the lights went on and off. I said I think we've been hit not realizing that we had actually been hit by something. Then we heard like feet running around in the hall, we opened the door and there was other co-workers running saying we've been hit. We run back in and I said we have to get out of here. I run in and got my stuff. As I was getting my things my phone rang, but I just look at it and said to myself am not picking it up. So me and some of my co-workers started heading down the stairs. I got caught with the crowd so my friends and co-workers are behind me now. I keep stopping to see if they are coming, but I didn't know they had gotten on the elevator 10 flights after we started coming down. So I continue to go down, everyone seems OK people didn't seem scared, they just wanted to get out. The announcement comes on saying go back to your floors it's only Tower 1, at this point I guess everyone thought it was an accident. I thought tower 1 had gotten hit by a helicopter, well when the announcement came on some people started going back others said no way and I was one of those people. I just wanted to get out. It felt like forever. I remember looking at my watch just before we got hit. Tower 2 which was the tower I was in got hit. I thought that whatever hit tower 1 had exploded. It sounded almost like a domino affect. Like something breaking apart. I heard what sounded like horror screams coming from above me. I was so scared, I started thinking about this women that I met at my brother in-laws church. She was talking about how she had asked god to send her an angel to get her out of a situation where this man was follwing her and she prayed for god to send her an angel. Well, he did because just as she was getting closer to where she had parked her car the man was getting closer, but just then someone that lives near where she parks turn on the porch light and came out. He said Brenda are you OK and the guy ran off. Well I remember this and I started praying as I was coming down. I was asking god to please send me the same angel that you sent that women at the time I couldn't even remember her name just her testimony of how god sent her an angel. I remember feeling really hot and sweat running down my back. At this point everyone wanted out, but we had alot of clam people telling others not to panick just go down carefully. We finally reached the lobby, but couldn't get out the doors that lead to the court yard, because there was so much debris it look like a movie not real. There was lot of firemen, police and port workers helping and directing people out of the building. We had to go down to the concourse level to go out a different way. I remember getting out and looking up, but still not knowing what was happening. I was so confused and shock I guess you can call it. I was worried for my friends and co-workers and I also wanted to get to my family and let them know that I was OK. There was so many people, looking, video taping just trying to use their cell phones, pay phones nothing was working. I finally decided to find my way home. I asked a police officer which way to the Williamsburg bridge and he directed me. I started walking and finally found a working pay phone with no line of people waiting. I say this was god still with me or the angel he had sent me anyway. I finally got to speak to my husband and tell him I was OK, I guess he didn't believe it was me at first. He said he wanted to come and get me I told him just wait for me at the other side of the bridge they're not letting anyone come over this side. I told him again just be there when I get there. I started walking towards the bridge and just before I started climbing the stairs to get on the bridge I started asking god again to send me that same angel to help me walk over the bridge, because my legs were hurting me so much from walking down from the 88th floor and the walk from the W.T.C to the bridge. I took off my shoes I didn't feel a thing. My legs didn't even hurt anymore it was as if I had been lifted up and carried across the bridge. I felt like I was dodging people coming the opposite direction from me. I saw one of those little police mobiles and I hear the police officer saying no one is allowed to go over the bridge, because they're afraid they might try to bomb the bridge. I kept going like if he wasn't even there. So did many others, they couldn't stop the people everyone wanted to get out of the city. If you can believe some people had to go into the city. I guess to get to their loved ones. I finally get to the other side and my husband was there waiting for me, but then he tells me that my 20 yr. old daughter decide to go over the bridge and look for me. I just couldn't believe it. I said god I know you didn't get me this far to lose my daughter. Now my husband decides to go and get her. I just started crying god please get them back safely. As I was waited my cell phone rings I didn't even know it was working and it's my sister on the phone and she couldn't believe that it was me. She and my other sister started crying. She was calling to tell my husband that the tower 2 had come down. And as I was talking to my sister my husband and daughter are back. I just wanted to go home get my kids from school and go home. I didn't even know what had happened until I saw it on the news. I was a mess I could even sleep, I was to scared. The next day it rained, thunderstorm I thought we were being bombed. My husband tried to tell me that it was Ok I didn't believe him I had to look for myself so I opened the front door to look out and then turned on the T.V. I tried going back to work, but just couldn't do it. I had to get out of New York. I've since moved away to Ohio where I came to know god as my lord and savior. I just couldn't believe it how god had sent me an angel to get me out. I'm a born again christian and I love the lord with all my heart, because he loves us so much. He is my comforter and my healer. I will thank him every moment of my life for everything he has done and everything he is about to do for me and my family. Thank you Jesus, Thank you father god. In Jesus name. ( God doesn't promise a world free from danger, but he does promise his help whenever we face danger.) </text>

              <text>Tasha zayac 911 Essay
									  5-28-02
Period 5

On September 11th 2001, I was on my way to school from a doctor's appointment. It was 9:30a.m.when I found out what had happened. I saw the replays of the first plane hitting the first World Trade Tower and about 18 minutes later another plane came and hit the second World Trade Tower. One hundred twenty minutes later the first World Trade Tower started collapsing and was followed by the second.
My life will change because more people will be aware of what is going on and the people won't say things to make the other people mad. Hopefully there won't be very many security threats. I know that the terrorists have a different lifestyle than we do.
Several days later we watched the newscasters updating events that resulted from the tragedy that happened on September 11th. After the attack, the Coast Guard flew planes along Lake Ontario checking on things so people wouldn't do anything that they shouldn't do. The planes were also checking for any terrorist activity.
I think that the terrorists that live in Afghanistan were declaring war on the U.S. by attacking the World Trade Tower in New York City and also by attacking the Pentagon in Washington. They had no reason to do so. The other reason that I was watching the news when I got home was because I did not know exactly what was going on. I wanted to know more about what was going on in the world and what brought about the attack on September the 11th. Since my sister did not see any of the news reports, she wanted me to fill her in with all of the details about what happened during the day. I did my best to explain the terrorist attacks but I don't think she really understood.
The reason that the terrorists from Afghanistan declared war on us is because they don't like us even though we didn't do anything to them. One reason Osama bin Laden and his men dislike us is because we have a democracy. Another reason that they hate us is because we are a Christian nation. I think that another reason that the terrorists attacked us is because we are a lot more powerful than they are and they don't like that very much at all.
My point of view about this whole thing is that they could have settled their anger another way. You don't just go and blow up a building because you are mad at one person or even one whole country. The final reason that they don't like us is because we don't send anything over there to help them live their lives.
I believe that Osama and other Muslims have no right invading us unless we did something inappropriate to them. The Middle East and their struggles are very confusing and hard to understand. The one thing I do understand is what they did was wrong and almost 3000 Americans lost their lives.

<text>We were all busy with making the videogame we'd be working on for the past year. A friend poked his head over the cubicle divider behind me to tell me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Centre....in my mind I imagined it was a small light aircraft that had somehow lost control and crashed...a tragic accident, but nothing close to the truth.

A few of us went out a few minutes later for a smoke, and my friend was out there too...he informed us that a SECOND plane had crashed...no-one believed him, and assumed he had his wires crossed; he'd read two different news reports about the same accident, obviously. It occurred to me then that if indeed there were TWO planes involved, then it HAD to be intentional...but I never thought it would be as organised as it turned out to be; I presumed it to be a disgruntled psychotic employee, or indeed two of them, to be behind it. When we returned inside to the building there was a buzz in the office; people were checking news websites, TV's were being unplugged from their usual testing consoles and aeriels were being dusted off....the game was forgotten for the moment.

There followed a period of an hour where nobody knew just what was going on...The Pentagon had been targeted?? Rumous of more inbound US jets abounded...for 5 hours that day my world was upside down.

The rest of the afternoon was a haze; I called my girlfriend at home (she's from the USA) and we spoke about it; my colleagues and I, my closest friends, huddled around a small tv screen and watched with horror as the two towers fell...a memory that will stay with me forever.

My heart goes out to all those in the USA with families affected by this tragedy...I may be English, but God Bless America.

<text>I WAS WATCHING THE EARLY SHOW ON TELEVISION AT 6:30 AM MOUNTAIN STANDARD TIME. I WENT TO THE KITCHEN TO GET A GRAPEFRUIT TO EAT, AND WHEN I RETURNED THE TELEVISION SCREEN SHOWED FLAMES COMING OUT OF ONE OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWERS. I THOUGHT IT WAS A HOLLYWOOD DRAMATIZATION FOR A MOVIE. I DIDN'T REALIZED THAT IT WAS LIVE UNTIL I HEARD BRYANT GUMBLE FROM THE EARLY SHOW SAYING THAT A PLANE HAD JUST CRASHED INTO ONE OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER TOWERS. I WAS THINKING IT WAS A SMALL ENGINE PLANE, AS THE VIEW OF THE SMOKE WAS QUITE A DISTANCE AWAY. THEN I WATCHED IN HORROR AS ANOTHER PLANE CRASHED INTO TOWER TWO. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED A FRIEND WHO WAS OUTSIDE HAVING BREAKFAST ON THE PATIO. I TOLD HER TO TURN ON HER TELEVISION. SHE STAYED ON THE LINE AND WE TALKED ABOUT WHAT THE WORLD WAS COMING TO. LATER, FLIGHT 93 CRASHED IN PENNSYLVANIA. I COULDN'T BELIEVE THAT TERRORISTS WOULD USE OUR PLANES TO DO THEIR TERRORISM. IT WAS SAD TO SEE PEOPLE JUMPING OUT OF HE UPPER FLOORS OF THE TOWERS TO THEIR DEATHS. IT WAS EITHER JUMP OR BE BURNED ALIVE. THE PENTAGON CRASH WAS SHOWN A FEW MINUTES LATER. I LISTENED TO THE NEWS ABOUT THE PLANE CRASHES ON THE WAY TO WORK. I WORK AT A HIGH SCHOOL AND I WAS GLAD TO SEE TEACHERS WITH TELEVISIONS IN THE CLASSROOMS WATCHING THE NEWS ABOUT THE 9/11 ATTACKS. IT WAS SAD WHEN THE TWIN TOWERS CAME CRASHING DOWN. I WENT HOME AND WATCHED THE NEWS FOR 3 NIGHTS TO HEAR ABOUT RESCUE ATTEMPTS TO SAVE PEOPLE IN THE RUBBLE. IT TOOK 100,000 TRUCK LOADS TO CART AWAY THE RUBBLE LEFT FROM THE TERRORIST ATTACKS IN NEW YORK CITY. </text>

            <elementText elementTextId="229457">
<text>By 6:00 AM, September 11, 2001, myself and 5 other civic-minded citizens were all set up at our local polling place ready to receive the first voters in our Primary Election. We all lived in Anne Arundel County, Maryland and our polling place was in Annapolis, about a half mile from the US Naval Academy. Turn out was expected to be light as usual. The on-their-way-to-work voters came in chatting and laughing as the polling place is sometimes the only place that they have the time to speak to their neighbors. The election judges were all sharing the food and goodies we always bring with us for the long day.

When you agree to serve as an election judge you also agree that once you enter the polling place you will NOT LEAVE unitl the polls are closed, all tallys are taken and all supplies and machines are packed and out of the way. In Anne Arundel County this meant from 6:00 AM until 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM. Chief Judges are also required to take the paperwork to a drop-off point before going home.

This was not my first election as a judge and I absolutely loved doing it. People who vote are a lot like guests at a wedding; they are happy; they are seeing old friends they haven't spoken to in awhile; they always see familiar faces and deep inside they are proud and pleased to be there, as they should be. My only wish is that more Americans would make the effort to experience how satisfying it is to exercise a right that we tend to take for granted and millions of people over the world would gladly die for.

After what we called "the first wave" of voters we were eating (you tend to do a lot of that in 12-14 hours in one room) and just discussing stuff when a women entered hysterically yelling, "We're under attack! We're at war!" Now,as in any place open to the public, you do sometimes get visitors that are, well, a little different. Polling places are also not allowed radios or tvs so that no voter will be swayed by reports that some candidate is ahead of another.

All the judges were intent upon calming the woman and trying to get her voter information because we really didn't know what else to do, when another person, and then another person arrived with the incredible news that something evil was in fact happening. Two planes in New York-the Pentagon-somewhere in Pennsylvania-the Academy was on lock-down like some kind of prison! The Governor had a report that the Maryland State House (about 4 blocks from us) was next to be attacked! Total chaos!

In the ensuing hours I witnessed what I'm certain many New Yorkers did on that day. People were forming closer relationships. People were quiet. Those with cell phones were sharing them with those of us who had no way to contact our loved ones. We were located in Annapolis Elementary School where many, many students had parents who worked in D.C., some even in the Pentagon.

School was dismissed but teachers and administrators don't just close the doors in an emergency. They have not only agreed to teach our children but to take on the responsibility of their safety. When I finally left the poll that evening (and I have no idea what time that was since I had lost all track of the workings of objective things like watches) there were still children whose parents had been unable, for one reason or another, to contact the school or arrange for their children to be picked up. As I walked through the building I also saw teachers who must have had children of their own waiting at home comforting others' children while they all just waited and waited.

Once the other cheif judge and I had dropped off our paper work, we both started off in the same direction to go home. I do not own a car so I walk to and from the polling place. Although I usually look forward to the exercise after being confined all day, I was exhausted this horribly long day and would have jumped at the offer of a ride. However, the other judge just passed me by in her car. I went off thinking, "Just like a Republican!"

My route home took me directly through the grounds of the historic Maryland State House. I walked this route every day to work and back for two reasons. First of all the State House is beautiful and I love the feeling you get from all of the history that has taken place there. General George Washington resigned his commission there so that he could become the first President of the United States of America. The building even served as the National Capitol for a short time. During the day, when the building was open to visitors, I actually walked through the building-in one door and out the opposite. This in tribute to my mother who did the same in the state capitol building in Austin, Tx., where my parents lived during WWII.

This night though was very different. I remember wondering, "Are we now in WWIII"? The State House was taped off and surrounded by police who insisted that I go 2 blocks around to get to the other side. They looked at me with suspicion. Me with my collection of plastic bags, purses, and backpacks hauling all the necessities for a long day. I went around and started down the long avenue that leads to the State House from Route 50 where so many parents were stuck in traffic earlier trying to get home from Washington. I had walked and rollerbladed down this street hundreds of times at night and never once noticed that there are no street lights. Tonight there were no lights from the endless cars and no lights from the completely darkened State House. The bright stars from earlier that morning had just disappeared as if they had gone to ferry the many souls to their new home.

I literally felt my way home that night, just putting one foot in front of the other until I reached the only place where there was any light. This was a parking lot behind a State Police Barracks where I felt my very first pang of actual fear. I quickly inventoried all the bags attached to my person and remembered the look of distrust on the face of the police officers at the State House; for the first and only time I walked around that parking lot!

It's such a different world that we live in now; you cannot enter most public arenas with a backpack; you can no longer walk right through the Maryland State House (and probably the Texas State Capitol); you always wonder why that police officer or guard looked at you. I remember hearing once a citizen of Israel summing up the difference between living in the US and living in Israel in this way, "In America you get your bags checked as you leave a store; in my country they are checked before you enter." Well how about BEFORE and AFTER!

To all the people in Annapolis who took pity on 6 people stuck in one room for that never-ending day in September and brought us news-especially the Washington Post reporter who updated us every chance he could in what must have been a chaotic day; to all the teachers who stayed at school when they must have been terrified for their own childrens' saftey; to the local Papa John's pizza delivery person that
fought traffic and the fear of the unknown to deliver us pizza and the shop owner who comped it; to the police officers who stood in a place that was rumored to be the "next target" because it was their job and to those other just, plain civic-minded people who shared their cell phones and thier ears and comforted many strangers by being the calm against the storm. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul. And to anyone who has the patience to read this thank you for the sympathetic ear I just realized how cathartic it is to just "take up the pen" and work it out.

Just in case in comes up in conversation-I do include "that Republican" in this list. I came to my senses later and realized that she was no different than the rest of us. America was just dazed and confused. I should not have taken it so personally. </text>

<text>On the eleventh of September, I woke up at about six thirty in the morning. I took a shower, got dressed and walked in to the kitchen for some breakfast. My dad was ready to leave for his office, when he suddenly recieved a phone call on his cell phone. I picked up the phone and answered it. It was our store manager. He wanted to speak to my dad so I passed the phone over to him. Since the manager just had opened the store, I thought about what could have been so urgent this early in the morning. In my mind, I began to worry if something bad happened. Was there something stolen? If so, why didn't the security alarm go off? I looked over at my dad's face, he was shocked, angry, and seemed to be sad. He ran over to the family room, where he turned our big screen on. He told me to put the new on and so I did changed the channel to CNN. That is when I discovered what had happened. My mom, dad and I watched their report in shock and deep sorrow. I personally felt like crying for all of the innocent victims caught inside the twin towers. On the way to school, my dad told me that he was planning a trip for our family in the upcoming winter vacation to New York. He told me that when I two years old, he held me in his arms standing nearly at the highest level in one of the twin towers. He then said that it would never be possible to see the entire city from that height again. </text>

<text>I usually watch Good Morning America every morning while getting ready for work. That particular morning, I didn't turn the TV on util almost 8:00 our time. The first plane had just hit the 1st tower. Diane and Charlie were commenting that a horrible accident had just occurred, and no one was sure what had happened. There was specualtion that a small private plane had crashed into the tower.

To everyone's horror, a 2nd plane approached from the left side of the screen. There was ind\cedible disbelief when seconds later, a huge fire ball exploded on the 2nd tower.

I called my parents panicked. I said we are under attack, turn on your TV!

I flew to my son's school and took him out of school. All I could think of was keepin my kids with me.

Everyone was in shock. How could this happen? It just got worse. The Pntagon was hit,the towers came down, flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania...when would it end?

I have this image burned in my mind of everyone fleeing Ground Zero. President Bush getting the news while in a classrom in Florida. Not knowing for several hours where the President was, while they tried to protect him.

It was sheer terror.

How can people who pray to Allah everyday take so many lives? </text>

<text>I had just taken my four year old daughter and two year old son to daycare and was on my way to work when it came over WBNQ that the first plane had gone into the first tower. I listened intently to the words that Susan was saying. Then she said that another plane just hit tower two and that this was indeed a terrorist attack. I heard what she was saying but I couldnt understand it. I could not believe that this nation was under attack!! I went immediately home and checked my machine. My husband was in St. Louis, Mo. getting ready to go over the road. My dad was already on the road and was in New York so I wanted to see if he had called. I called my husband and he didnt answer the phone. I called my dad and he didnt answer the phone. Now all that I could do was wait. My job called and said that they had cancelled the banquet and that there was no need to come in until we knew what was happening. My best friend called me about 930 and asked me if I was watching the news. i told her no but I was aware of what was going on. She said turn it on and sit down. I turned it on just in time to see the replay of what had transpired not even 20 minutes ago. My heart sank. I started crying and my best friend asked if I had spoken to my dad. i said no word from him yet. Last I knew he was on his way to New York but I wasnt sure where he was going. Turns out he was only about a block away from the towers when the first plane hit. He said it was a blast he will never forget. He said when he looked up and saw that the building was on fire he got scared. He said the next thing he knew another plane was going into the other building. I remember watching on my couch as they replayed the events of the morning. I remember just sitting there with the phone in my hand, not talking, just feeling not so alone with my best friend on the other end. I remember my husband calling me to ask if I knew what was happening and if I was ok and where the kids were. I told him I had taken them to daycare but that I wanted to go get them and just hold them close. He told me to go get them. So I did. I dont think I have ever been so grateful for two children as I was the moment I went into their daycare and picked them up. It was like I knew in an instant our whole lives could spin out of control and everything could be lost. I remember being scared thinking what else were these people going to do to our nation, asking what had we done to them to make them do such a terrible thing. I remember turning the TV off so my kids wouldnt be scared and not focused on the days events. I remember seeing people jumping from the buildings only to find out later they werent jumping. They were running through smoke and ran right through the glass. WBNQ was taking calls that afternoon about how people were feeling. I remember I got through and I got choked up with tears, Susan stated that I sounded like I was upset. I told her I was that all I could think about was all those children who would be waiting for their mommies and daddies at daycare to pick them up to only learn that they wouldnt be picking them up that day. And about all those parents that dropped their children off at school or daycare and went to work that day in those buildings not knowing that that would be last time they kissed their babies. Everytime the anniversary rolls around I thank god for my life and my childrens. I just hope that everyone remembers that their life can be changed in a blink of an eye and that you should hold your children as often as possible because you never know if that will be last time!</text>

<text>I live Australia, but I still felt that my life had also been effected.
I found out that morning, by my mum waking me up. I remember feeling really scared and also angry that something like this could happen.

I thankful that my cosuin got out all right, but I'm still angry that thosands of people had to die. Nobody has the right to choose when people sould die.

I remember that day all we did was watch the reports. I was worried the day earlier about my Maths outcome, but that day I would rather have the outcome then having an attack on any country.

My sympathy's to all in America and to the families of the people who lost their lives. God bless.</text>

I stopped the tape and stepped away for a moment and that's when I saw on TV the report of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. My first reaction was that it must be pilot error or mechanical problems with the plane. Then the South Tower was hit. I heard the planes were hi-jacked and and thought to myself oh my god, this cannot be happening here. I watched in stunned disbelief as both towers came crumbling down. It seemed the entire day was surreal, a strange dream. Everything was out of sync. That night, I went to bed and prayed for all the people who were killed. </text>

<text>I was at work at 6:00 am when a co-worker came in and told us of the events as they began. We had no TV but turned on the radio and listened as the towers were hit, fell, and as the Pentagon was hit, and the plane in Pennsylvania crashed. It was hard to imagine the devastation listening to the radio without seeing the images. The reporters, however, were in an almost panicked state and we could only visualize what was happening. I work 5 blocks from the state capitol building and we were sent home about 9:00 am. I immediately went to get my four year old daughter and even she understood what had happened when she saw the images on TV. This year, I reminded her what happened a year ago today, but I won't allow her to watch TV. I can't bear to watch myself. My heart goes to all the families and to the children who no longer have a mom, dad, or both. Peace.</text>

            <elementText elementTextId="229156">
<text>By now I know everyone has heard scores of stories of what happened last Tuesday. I will be reliving moments of shock and terror for weeks to come, and wanted to write down, to share my recollections to help come to grips with what happened, and to bear what witness I could to the atrocity. I have not yet had time to check the times as I've recollected them, but the events are as accurate as I remember. My heart goes out to all the victims and their families.

8:45 - Normal morning - I have a 9:00 meeting scheduled with the CFO of a small software firm. He's called the meeting, but as he is visiting from the West Coast, we have agreed the meeting will be at 60 Wall downtown, our company's "new" headquarters, that have recently been sold to a competitor. I've finished my morning coffee and breakfast, having gotten in early. I hear a slight rumble, and think construction must be going on in the building somewhere, in preparation for the new tenants. No one comments on the rumble. It is not construction, but the first strike into the northern tower of the WTC.

8:50 - A co-worker walking to his desk states there must be a fire somewhere. Glancing outside for the first time since the noise, I see thousands and thousands of letter size pieces of paper, making it look like a ticker tape parade. Everyone then slowly disengages from work to look for the source of the fire. We are on the 21st floor, so from our angle, it appears the fire and papers are coming from 140 Broadway - the former headquarters of DLJ, then Marine Midland, now HSBC. The building appears undamaged. Several co-workers decide to go up to the 40th floor for a better view.

8:55 - A secretary tells us a plane hit one of the WTC towers. A small one, I assume, some small cessna. No, she tells me, a 737 jumbojet. Total disbelief. I call the trading desk for verification. Yes, I am told, a passenger jet has hit the WTC. I realize my brother works in the WTC. I call my sister-in-law to find out what floor, what building he is in. I am told he's on the 45th floor, 1 WTC, the one with the communications antenna. I tell her to remain calm, to call me with any news.

9:00 - I take the elevator to the ground floor, to let the security guard know I have a 9:00 meeting, to let the visitor up to the 21st floor. At this point, another explosion, sounding closer, some shouts from people outside the building. I leave 60 Wall by the back entrance on Pine Street, which runs parallel to Wall St. Heading up Pine towards Broadway, I pass scores of people, some walking, some running, some crying. Papers are beginning to accumulate on the streets and sidewalks. The sounds of sirens are growing, coming from everywhere. Getting to the corner of Pine and Broadway, I can see fires in both buildings, and overhear the bystanders talking about the sight of the second plane hitting.

9:10 - Back up to the 21st floor of 60 Wall, after brushing off some soot and ash from my shirt. I call up my sister in law to tell her that Gip should be fine, the hit was very high up on # 1 WTC, he should be able to get out of the building. Still no word from him. A janitor walks through the floor, telling everyone to leave immediately, walk down to the ground floor. The stairways are pretty much empty, as the building is only about 15% filled.

9:15 - Getting to the 3rd floor, I stop descending to visit the trading floor, to make a call to see if there's any news. None. My sister and parents are both in her apartment, tell me I have a place to stay if needed. I then get down to the basement, run into a co-worker, and tell him I'm going to leave to look for my brother. He argues that it is a total waste of time, I won't find him, that I'm safer where I am. I agree, but tell him I'm going back up to the trading floor to make another call.

9:25 - Getting to the ground floor, I decide to make a detour to go to a local chapel, Our Lady of Victory, to say a prayer. I run into Mary, a cousin of my father's. She is weeping, very shaken. She works on lower Broadway, and did not make it to work because of a doctor's appointment. She knows Gip works at 1 WTC, and we decide that help will be needed to where the evacuees are being shepherded.

9:40 - We walk towards Broadway to ask rescue workers where the site is. Seaport, we're told, walk north on Broadway to Fulton, then down Fulton. We are told the Pentagon was hit, and Pittsburgh was hit. We can't make sense out of Pittsburgh... how big is this? We start walking north. People are still watching the burning, mesmerized. Some scream at the sight of people jumping from the towers.

9:45 - Two blocks away, at Maiden Lane, we are told to walk away from Broadway, to walk down Maiden Lane eastbound to the Seaport. We get halfway down to the next intersection, and I spy a building that provides a shortcut to John Street. John Street runs parallel to Maiden Lane, and the building has entrances on both streets, with glass doors on both sides. I tell Mary we can cut through. The building is small, probably built before World War I. I estimate it has 10 to 20 small businesses as tenants. Mary starts to open the door, and an enormous loud rumbling, a cacophony of screams is heard behind us. The ground is shaking. I turn to look back, and see a cloud of smoke rushing toward us, with people sprinting down the street, absolute fear on their faces. We yell at some passing to get into the building, then run in ourselves. We walk, dazed, towards the other exit, look back through the glass doors at a screaming crowd sprinting past the entrance, then see a black cloud overcome them, block out all light and shut off all noise from the street. Like a soundproof curtain swept across the doors. The glass wall of doors looks like they are now painted charcoal grey on the outside. We look north, still a normal scene with cars, but no people. I scream to Mary to leave by this exit, take three steps, and the same black cloud envelopes and seals off that exit. There are seven people in the lobby. A door opens, and the super is screaming at everyone to get downstairs. We head down into the basement of the building, which is a collection of storerooms, a washroom with basin and toilet, furnaces, boilers, pipes, cables, and boxes, all running north south. Someone has a boombox, tells us the tower fell. We dampen paper towels, hold them over our mouths to protect us from the smoke which is beginning to filter down. We wonder if we will ever get out, or if we are buried under rubble.

9:55 - I go back up to the lobby, as the door is open. People are in a bank branch that is adjacent to the building, with a glass door entrance to the building lobby. The door is locked, and the people are trying to break it down, as they are being overcome by smoke. The super yells for them to back away, then uses a metal stool to smash the door. My adrenaline is now so high that I jump at the sound, thinking illogically that this small building is now under attack. I return to the basement, to get away from the smoke that is now coming from the bank branch. A new batch of 10 people enter the basement, asking for water. They are covered in ash, looking like moving statues, with red eyes, coughing, some with clothes that have rips in them.

10:00 - A woman in uniform tells us there is more space in the floor below us with cleaner air. Mary and I head down the stairs, end up in another corridor with rooms off to the side. The corridor is lined with filing cabinets, with records in them from the early '90s. We assess the area. There is a paint closet, big sign against smoking. A supply closet full of fluorescent lights. A machine shop, with scrap metal, power tools, a lathe, and plumbing supplies. Mary and I are the only ones in this area. We don't know what has become of the others. On top of the filing cabinets, we find a plastic statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, with a red cloak and golden crown, lying on its side. I set it right side up, say a quiet prayer for help. Others come in the room looking for masks against the smoke, which seems to be getting worse. I go back to the paint closet to look for masks. No luck. We look for phones - again, no luck.

10:25 - I look past the stairway in the other direction, find a door, hear voices on the other side. Opening it is a wonderful sight. Four men, clean, in a small air-conditioned room watching TV. I yell to Mary to join us. We find Poland Spring water on the ground in bottles. A phone is there, some success, some failure in getting through. I have no luck. The TV turns out to be closed circuit, with cameras in both the lobby and the street. Mary and I grab bottles of water, drink it down. The air conditioner makes the room comfortably cool at 72 degrees. We watch the camera for clues as to what has happened.

10:35 - We see people now leaving the building, and can see them walking normally. Mary and I agree it's time to get out. I grab what water I can carry - eight loose bottles. We come up to the ground floor, see the street, see shapes of cars. We walk out into a scene of an eerie quiet, with 2 inches of ash covering everything. Smoke and ash are still in the air, but with our wet towels we can, at least, breathe. We start to head east to the river, trying to get away from the source of smoke. I glance back to see, through a fog of smoke, a giant section of the skin of the WTC leaning up against a building on Broadway that housed The World of Golf retail store. It reaches up to the bottom of the third floor. The streets are totally deserted at first, although we can hear some indistinct yelling. There is no sign of the scores of people who were trying to outrun the wall of smoke, although we see numerous shoes, backpacks, briefcases lying in the street. As we walk down Maiden Lane, we pass the Federal Reserve Building. We instinctively do not look around on the ground, do not try to assimilate too much information - we only focus on walking toward what looks like clear sky. Some people pass us by, covered head to toe in ash. I give them water. I give water to the policemen on each corner until I'm out. We have no cell service, and wonder what else in America has been hit.

10:45 - We are now in front of Pace University Hospital, where the air is clearer. Hospital staff are out front, handing out masks. We each get masks on, with plasticine shields for our eyes. We head west, towards City Hall, under direction from police. We get over the concrete barricade on the approach to the Brooklyn Bridge. Police tell us to journey across the bridge to Brooklyn.

We both agree that we need to get north to midtown. Right there, in front of City Hall, another horrendously loud rumble builds, screams, crowd breaking into a run. I look back at the wall of smoke as the second building collapses and realize it is now getting bigger and coming towards us, like some evil monster from a childhood dream you can't escape. I grab Mary's purse and bag, and we both start to sprint north up Park Row. What had been an orderly flow now becomes a flight of fear, although within two blocks we realize the smoke won't reach us. Mary keeps urging me to leave her, to run to safety. I need her as much as she needs me, however. At this point, we stop to catch our breath, but I want to continue walking, as we are now in Federal Plaza, next to the US Court of International Trade, US Courthouse, and the Federal Building. We continue our trek north. Still no cell service at all. We instinctively duck every time we hear what are fighter jets above us.

12:00 - We reach Grand Central, are told trains are working on a limited schedule.

12:10 - We reach 270 Park Ave, midtown HQ for my company. We go upstairs, I find out from my sister that my brother is alive, he got out before the second plane even hit. I say a silent prayer of thanks, and pass the news on to Mary.

1:00 - I get on a jammed Metro North train, hear tales, stories, rumors from fellow travelers.

2:15 - Arrival at my station, and I walk home. Rest of the day is spent watching the endless re-runs, hearing of the Pentagon, getting word on others. My wife and I find out that a good friend of ours, a member of our wedding, was on the 85th floor of #2 when the second plane hit. No word yet for him. A sleepless night, up at 6:00 AM.

Wednesday - a day of prayer, of some hope, an overwhelming sense of loss, anger, and grief. My brother Tim, who drove down from Boston on the news, insists we play golf, which provides a welcome respite from all the horrific news. We play with his brother-in-law at a nearby country club. The adrenaline burn from the previous day has given me an incredibly sore body, like I've run a marathon. Playing golf was almost as surreal as the previous day. Miles tells tales of his exodus, of the dark-skinned person who somehow got onto the floor of the NYSE with a knapsack. A floor trader coldcocked him, and Security took him away. The event started a mini-panic. Later on Wednesday, Missie and I attend an interfaith service at the local synagogue, which is where I finally let go. I spend the hour weeping, crying, sobbing for the thousands and thousands of innocents who were simply going to work. Totally unable to comprehend the horrific event, yet I know it's real.

Thursday - Return to work, Spent the morning writing this e-mail. Noon, we are being evacuated because of a bomb scare. We leave, then return, now rumors are flying faster and faster. I think I will leave for home, don't know when I'll be back. My prayers to all.

<text>Before I begin, I'd like to express my heart felt sympathy to those who's lifes were taken, and the loved ones left behind. Also,to share my gratitude to those who gave of themselves to help any/all.
I, too, shared the anguish of uncertainty of not knowing where a loved one was that day.
My Uncle is a Locksmith, for the Pentagon. As my morning progressed I started doing my daily chores and with the radio & tv on I began to clean... I had DC101 on the radio and heard of a plane crash. At first, I couldn't fanthom the idea, they are alway's joking on the radio. I thought I better look at the tv.. I saw the replay of the first plane hitting the tower #1. I called my mother, who was at work, I began to tell her about it. As I spoke to her another plane hit tower #2, then another plain hit the pentagon. As I began to tell her of the news, she said ,"Oh, my God, Uncle John is at work" (the Pentagon), "call Aunt Murph (his wife)."
I hung up and dialed Aunt Murph, her line was busy. Redialing several times, I finally got through and she was distraught over the fact that she could not reach anyone at the Pentagon. I wanted to go to her, she was alone and I thought she might go to look for him. I told her I'd be there in a flash. She said,"No, I'll be alright, I'll call you back."
Pacing the floor, tears strolling down my face, in the horror of what just accurred and the fate of my Uncle, I called my Aunt again. Still no word from my Uncle John.
Just about 3 hours passed and finally my phone rang, It was my Aunt Murph. She said, " I just spoke to John and he is alright, he had no way of contact till now, all the phones were busy, I just got to a pay phone in which there is a long line., He went on to say, that he'd try to get a ride home somehow, not knowing when he'd arrive.
He arrived home around 7 p.m. that evening. My family and I were so grateful to have him home, and gracing us with his presence.
I pray; God keep us safe and from harms way. Give us the strength to put the past behind us and lead us to a new tomorrow... Full of hope, love, and happiness.
                                        Amen</text>

              <text>The day the angel cried.....

The angel shed a tear that day
as he flew over this dismay
he heard and watched his children
and his heart cried out in pain.

But from the crash the smoke and ash
grew a power both great and rare
it touched the souls of young and old
gratified and gathered them in prayer

Oh angel you must cast your blows
and death inflicted your stings
but we have faith in god above
and the angel spread his wings

He flew high in the sky
and called to all who'd hear
unite with me in firm resolve
we will not live in fear

We will not rest, we will not cease
and terror will not reign
we vow to you now that your gone beyond
you did not die in vain

The sun will rise another day
the sun will fall once more
and time will not abide
but rest assured we will not forget
the day the angel cried......
