Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sitting in a meeting in Paris having flown over from Los Angeles on the 9th of September, 2001. I was there as a part of a team to assimiliate US expatriates working in France with the company that I was working for at the time as an HR Executive. As the meeting was in full force, my assistant entered the room and she looked ashen. I was the facilitator for the meetings and she asked me to step outside. I immediately thought it was something terribly wrong. She told me that a plane had just hit the WTC and it was on CNN. We thought ...an accident..a small plane. We were so wrong.. I returned and broke the meeting and someone brought two televisions in and we were just awestruck that this had happened..in our home country. Here we were, talking about the world being a smaller place now, and that global commerce was the wave of the future and I felt so far from home. I lived in New York for over ten years and lived about 5 minutes from the WTC. Many of those in the room were from New York and were utterly grieve stricken about neighbors, friends and in three cases, relatives ( a sister and a brother and a mother)who worked in the WTC. Then the second Tower was hit and we hadn't even processed the first event and now we were really afraid for our country and its people. Was it war? I thought about Los Angeles, my home and my family, scattered all over the US. We knew one thing for sure, this was no accident and this was really really going to change our lives, our worlds. When the Pentagon was hit, the room was in uproars, many were crying, in disbelief that this was happening while we were so far away. Helplessness, never felt so real. It hit me out of the blue, my brother and sister in law worked at the Pentagon often. They were contractors and I now felt this event right in my own heart. Trying to get lines out proved impossible. Air travel was suspended. We got word from our Paris office that all Americans had to check in at the Embassy. We decided that we would convene and everyone headed to their own corners to go in ..to process. I remember going to a McDonald's in Paris..a little piece of home and definatly ordering a Big Mac..I couldn't eat it..I went to my corporate apartment and just plugged into email..thank God for that. I was able to communicate with my husband-to-be, my family and learned that my brother and sisterinlaw were fine. For over three weeks I was frantically keeping in touch electronically and then via telephone. Still not able to leave. I did not return to the US until October 5th and I went straight to New York. I had to see it for myself. It wouldn't be real until I could see it. I discovered that a dear colleague of mine had died a hero, at Cantor helping her employees get out of there. A true testament to what HR is all about. It affected me deeply, this event. I have now developed a fear of flying. I am someone who has flown in every type of aircraft imaginable and now I completely freak out during an hour flight. 475,000 air miles over a career of 20 years, hopping on planes all over the world. I also have developed a disdain for Middle Eastern men. I know that I shouldn't but everytime I see one, I am afraid they may be a sleeper and its only time. I am so angry at the terrorist behind this. They used our freedoms against us and we will never be the same. I am so angry that we are still suffering losses from this war that followed. Even if you didn?t lose someone it still had an impact on you. I know that this attack has impacted me, my family and friends, and my generation. 9/11 has impacted me. One of the ways is that we need to live life to the fullest. The attack reminded me that there might not be a tomorrow so if you are feeling down remember do you want die crying or being depressed or doing what you wanted to do. Another way is that we are not safe even in our country from terrorist attacks. Finally it has made me closer to my friends and family. I want all family and friends to know that they all important in my life. Even if I don?t act it I really do like them. I know it has affected my friends and family a lot. I think that I have come closer to my friends and family. Everyone has come closer together. I know that everyone in my family has tried to see us and everyone since the attack. The attack has changed my generation a lot. My generation has been affected. Everyone has become nicer since the attack. I know that every is opening doors and picking things up for other people more. It has helped America become closer since the attack. The attacks have changed everyone. Tell us your story: I work for the Secretary of the Army and was standing in our office (which is in the E ring) when the plane impacted the building. The solid wood doors (connecting the office I was standing in to other offices) blew open like feathers from the wall of wind that came ripping through the building, our floor shook and the loud, surround-sounding noise that came flying along with the wind seemed almost deafening. I grabbed my backpack and headed out to the center courtyard where, after just a few short moments, we were directed to move through a corridor leading to South Parking and get away from the building as quickly as possible. After walking over to the Navy Annex, I realized that the part of the building that had been struck was the newly renovated part...a part that almost every day, I would walk through at or about 0900 (to handcarry documents). That morning, I didn't complete the documents I normally handcarry due to the overload of incoming telephone calls. I remember grabbing the cross around my neck and thanking God that I was able to walk out of the building. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11th, I was sitting in Chapel at Western Theological Seminary, totally oblivious to the terror unfolding in New York City. The whole Seminary shared a sense of corporate grief as we learned of the tragedy during our coffee time. It was evident that we were joined in our shock by others around the city, as I walked to lunch in Holland. Every where I looked, groups were clustered all over Hope?s campus and on street corners downtown, sharing their pain and outrage. Every table at "The Good Earth" was abuzz with news of the event. Every table but one. . . You see, September 11th was also the first day of preschool for Anna. Between mouthfuls of cream cheese bagel, and accented by peels of gleeful giggles, she shared with her daddy the wonder of her morning. As he listened attentively, I was overcome by the significance of the gift of love this father was giving his daughter on this ?day of days.? That he could leave his grown-up priorities and worries behind, and be wholly present to his daughter in that moment, was nothing short of moving. And in that moment I knew I was seeing Christ-like love ? sincere and self-sacrificing. I was off from my job that day and had not desided what I was going to do for that day. I normally leave my TV on the Today Show from when I wake up around 6:00 a.m. until I turn it off around 8:00 a.m. That morning I kept the Today Show on when Matt Lourdey said that they had a important new break. They went to The world Trade Center where they said a plane had hit the world trade center and smoke was coming from the outside of the building. It was truley unbelieveable and then the Today Show start to talk about it. I was glue to my television . In around a half hour after the first plane hit the world trade center. I was still watching Tv,When the second plane hit the other world trade building. I knew then that this was and attack from someone who doesn't like the United States of America. I watch Tv all that day. I watch and did not get scared about what had happen because I no that God is still the ruler of this Universe. No matter what happen in this world . I believe that we have to hold on to the Holy Bible which is the words of God. I couldn't believe it, so my coworker walked with me to our cafeteria, and as we stood there watching CNN on the TV, we saw the towers fall on live TV. It was just an unbelievable sight and there were a lot of gasps from the people in the room. We just couldn't believe it! The rest of the day consisted of people going in to watch the TVs and/or listening to news radio to find out what was going on. There was so much fear as to what was happenning to our country and how much more was going to happen. With the days that followed, our company took up collections after choosing one of the 9/11 funds, and the company matched it. We also put money that we made on selling patriotic shirts, pins, and mugs towards these funds. We tried to do a blood drive, but the local office was booked solid for several months. It was just an unbelievable amount of support for our country and the people that were involved in these horrific incidents - people we did not know. They were almost ready and I turned on the TV so they could watch a few minutes of their favorite cartoon. I remember looking over at the TV while brushing my youngest daughter's hair, and thinking "oh my, a plane went down somewhere." All I could see was a plume of black smoke rising into the air. I instinctively knew that it must be a really bad crash to cause that much black smoke. Then the cameras pulled back and went into focus, and a city came into view, and in the background you could see a Jet turning toward a high building. I stood in total shock as I watched it hit the building. I remember saying "Oh my God!" Then I saw the words at the bottom of the screen they read, "America under Attack." My children asked me what was happening, and I turned to them and with tears in my eyes I told them that the United States was being attacked, and that alot of people were on their way to heaven. I gathered up my composure and sent them out the door, only to call them back to me. I called the school to see if it was open and they said yes, so I drove my kids to school myself, still in a state of shock. I told them I would pick them up after school was out. I must have changed my mind 4 or 5 times that day as I watched the events unfold on TV. I finally picked them up. In the meantime I had called all my family and friends, I needed to hear their voices, to know that they were okay. The tears flowed freely for me that day. At first I was shocked, then stunned, and then angry. By the time I picked up my children I knew we were going to war, that we would seek Justice for the terrible injustice that we had suffered. On the way home from school I did my best to answer my children's questions honestly, while wondering what it would mean to life here in the USA as we had known it. I was outraged that we had educated these terrorists here, so they could turn that knowledge against us. I was concerned and wondering what had happened to our President, was he alive or dead. My family all rallied around the children and each other. That night I cried while I did the nightly prayers with my children and I added a special prayer for our President, the World Leaders, the families who had lost someone, the Rescue Workers, and our Military. It was the first time I had ever watched the World stop, and it was the first time I'd ever heard of all the planes being grounded at once. That night I was glad I could hear the military jets as they flew overhead here, I knew that they were watching out for us. I walked out into the hallway and people were rushing to the television inside our Physical Medicine department. The reporters on TV were describing how a plane had rammed itself into the World Trade Center and replaying video of the crash. All of a sudden, my co-workers and I witnessed live video of the second plane hitting the second World Trade Center tower. For the rest of the morning, we watched in horror as the Pentagon was hit, the fourth plane crashing into the ground, the towers collapsing, people covered in debris rushing away from ground zero. It was the most horrible thing I have ever witnessed. I remember my eyes filling up with tears and my throat tightening up. How could someone do such destruction to us using OUR planes to do it? I remember looking at my friends near me...some crying, some in shock with jaws dropped, all devastated. I remember that life is short and precious. United we stand. I am proud to be an American. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was September 11th, 2001 and I was starting my first day as a 6th grader, king of elementary school. Life was good, we were on top, able to cut in the lunch line, and having extended recesses. On this particular day, we were in class when the principle came on the PA with an address stating that there would be no outside recess for that day. The whole class was upset because it was a beautiful day, and we were looking forward to a game of 4-square. At lunch, rumors were flying around. Kids were being pulled out of school, some were saying the White House had been bombed, others that the president had been shot, no one knew the real story. When we got back to class the TV was on, but as soon as we walked in the room, our teacher turned it off. As the day progressed, our class was slowly declining in numbers, with parents stopping by and picking up there children. Class continued as normal, and at the end of the day, I ran home to find out what was going on. My mom was on the phone, and the TV was on. I waited for my mother to get off the phone, and thats when I found out what was happening. I ran down to where the TV was and watched as the images flew across the screen over and over again. First the North tower, then the South, then the collapse. Over and over it happend. There was then a shot of the soot covering cars, and one car happend to be a company car for where my uncle worked. My mom tried to call my aunt, but the switchboard was overloaded, and we couldnt get through. My mom also remembered that the next door neighbors at our old house both worked there. My dad and sister both came home safe, and we watched the news all night long. The next day, I watched the news before school, at school, and after school. We were finally able to get through that night to find out that my uncle was ok, and that he wasnt schedualed to work in New York on that day, and the neighbors were both ok, but it was a close call. One had her office hit. Luckily, she had had a meeting with her boss moved to the bosses office on the other side of the building because her wall was being reenfourced. I will never forget that day, what happend, and people so close to me that I came so close to losing. I remember only when the second plane flew into the second tower of the world trade center. I remember feeling the pain(of labor) and the abandenment(of the staff) wich led me to feel selfish. In New York everyone was in a panic trying to find loved ones, while I laid in a hospital bed giving birth to my third child. Camron Joseph was born at Sparrow Hospital on September 11,2001 just shortly after 4p.m. I was watching Jane Clayson and Bryant Gumble when a terrified New Yorker called the morning showand told them that there was a plane that flew into one of the towers at the World Trade Center, when I seen the second plane hit the other tower I knew we were being attacked by terrorist. I fely as if I did'nt want to have this baby anymore. I did'nt want to bring him into a world of chaos and war. I did'nt know what was going to happen next, and if anything, where?Our Capitol was just down thw street from the hospital. I kept looking out my window to see if it was still standing. It felt like only seconds had past when the first tower came tumbling down, and then, the other one. After all that the nurses and doctors kept coming in and out of my room. But they were'nt checking on me, they just came to watch the T.V. i finally turned it off while a nurse was still watching it. I did'nt mean to be selfish, but I needed my epidural. The nurse was spending all her time watching T.V instead of calling the anesthesiaolgist. I know it was a tragic day but the world did not stop turning. As American citizins we all had to pull together, especially the health care profession. Thats why I give praise to all the nurses, doctors, surgeons and volunteers who worked together to help the victims and the victims families. Do you know that saying "For every death a life is given?" Needless to say, thousands of babies were born that day. I'm just glad God sent me my precious gift a few days early! This September 11th I will not only be lighting Camron's first birthday candle, but another candle to remember all those who we lost. And my prayers and love go to the families who lost a loved one/ones. Tell us your story: My co-worker was an avid newsradio listener, so when she came out and said that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center, it seemed odd, but we didn't have too many details. Moments later, she came out and said that another plane had hit the other tower. I knew then that it had to be a terrorist attack, still not knowing that these planes were large airliners, full of innocent passengers. Someone rigged a television to receive at least the local Fox network, and I was able to watch the first tower fall. The reporter on the street seemed so eager to find a dead body - I just couldn't continue to watch. I, too, had a radio at my desk and listened all day and for several days after to the excellent coverage by National Public Radio of the events, the personal stories and what it all came to mean to our country. The company I worked for was foreign owned and had many internationals working there. My friend in the next cubicle was Turkish and it gave me great comfort that he shared the horror and sadness with me. He was there to assure me that these acts were not the work of Islam, but of hate, and hate knows no true religion. For the most part, I watched very little television coverage - I preferred the radio, as I didn't have to be faced with the incredibly disturbing images. I shared emails of photos and poems. I gave blood. I was grateful that I didn't know anyone who died in the tragedies, although I knew and cared about people personally affected by them. I watched the concerts associated with September 11 and cried as they showed the crowd. I cried over the radio stories. I cried over the images and emails. Tears well up even now as I'm writing this, as I think about all that's associated with that terrible day. I have a flag on my car, in the front window of my home, and red, white and blue jewelry to wear, not just for July 4, but for all the other days that we show pride in our country. One of the most poignant things that sticks in my mind was not something that happened in the days immediately following the event, but months later. We see so many signs and bumper sticker saying "God bless the USA." On a chalkboard in a small Mexican restaurant, the American owners had written "God bless the world." Even in the midst of our own tragedy, let us not forget how much of the world grieved with us, how people of many nations were lost on September 11, and how many more than 3000 people are lost during even more senseless acts of violence throughout the world each year. God bless us all, indeed. I know I am - with health, love, a healthy and happy family, the ability to reason and to contribute to this world. I couldn't believe my eyes and ears what was happening in front of me. I was horrified to think that terrorism has come to the United States. My husband was a POW in VietNam 1970-1971 and we both felt violated, to think that terrible people could take the lives of innocent people, whether the ones in the World Trade Center, the firefighters, police officers, or anyone that was there for lifesaving, it is a terrible thing to happen to "our American Families". The plane that crashed at Shanksville, Pa., went over the Westmoreland County Airport in Latrobe, Pa. Our daughter, Charlene Nicely works in the Blue Angels Restaurant. She told me, that evening when I called her, the plane flew over the airport and it was like something was wrong. I thank God for the people who tried to keep the hijackers from trying to crash the plane into the airport. My daughter was very scared of what had happened that day. They are my heros that day for saving our daughters' life and all the people who work there, the airport and Latrobe, Pa. and the surrounding communities. I can remember seeing the people fall before the television stations decided to stop showing it. Perhaps they decided to stop showing it once they they recognized that what they were seeing was people jumping to their deaths. I remember imagining what it would be like to be the husband of one of those women that worked at the World Trade Center and not knowing if I had just watched her leap to her death, not knowing whether she was safely on the ground far enough away from the tower that just fell or if she had burned or was buried in rubble. Thankfully, I only had to imagine those things because my wife was right there next to me, holding my hand, weeping as the stark realization that our world had forever changed washed over us. We clung to each other, feeling suddenly vulnerable here almost in the middle of the country. We could be hurt here. Maybe they couldn?t get to us directly but they could hurt the ones we loved they could affect the way we went about our daily activities, scaring us into a certain paralysis. The events of 9-11 did scare us. I remember the eerie sensation of hearing a jet in the sky, knowing that all air travel had been grounded and going out to look up at the fighter jets flying over. I told my wife this. I told her I was still scared. I told her I had nightmares. She told me, too, how watching those planes crash into the towers had changed her; how hearing about the personal tragedies and also the tales of courage would change her life forever; how each day would hold infinitely more meaning for her. I don?t remember her saying that each day with me would hold infinitely more meaning. It didn?t matter then. What mattered was that she was there; that I wasn?t on the news recounting my last phone call with her; that I didn?t need to recall the last words she said as she left that morning. Now I distinctly remember her last phone call, her last words to me that she said before she left. I don?t remember the moment when things went wrong. I do remember when she said to me that ?something is just not right in our marriage?. You remember those things that change your life forever. We were on a plane somewhere over the Midwest heading from denver to see her brother in Florida. I could not have been more astonished had I looked out my office window and seen that same plane headed directly for me. After the events of 9-11 people looked back with the power of hindsight and said, ?Well of course this was going to happen. The U.S. has for too long imposed its will on other countries, on the people of the Middle East.? In hindsight, I look back and shouldn?t be astonished that her new world did not include a vision of me, but I still am. Today I watch the memorials of what occurred two years ago, and I remember exactly where I was, who I was with, what I was doing. I remember that imagined agony of not knowing where she was. I don?t know where she is now. I don?t know if she is thinking of me. I don?t know if she looks back on that day and even remembers me there, remembers us hugging and crying together, clinging to each other as if we were all that we had left in this world. It?s a new world now. The events of September 11 will remain in my mind forever. There is no one else I can ever share that experience with. I was at work that morning at the pharmaceutical company warehouse that I work at. A friend of mine came walking past me and told me that he saw on television that a plane had flown into the side of the WTC. Well, the first thing that came to my mind was that it must have been some small prop plane, like a radio or tv station would use to spot traffic tie-ups. It was then I made my way over to the television in our break area and saw what had really happened.I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I had cold chills running up and down my spine. I watched in dis-belief as to what had just happened. I tried to rationalize what was going on. Did something happen to the pilot? Did it have some sort of mechanical failure? Maybe someone from the control tower gave them some bad information, and directed them wrong. Then it happened. The second plane came screaming into the picture, and hit the other tower. Who could do something so horible? Who could have the gaul to kill so many innocent people. We all forgot about work that morning. We just sat there in front of the tv in utter disbelief. Watching the towers burn ,and then fall to the ground. Wanting to be able to do something. But not able to do a thing except wipe our tears, console one another, and pray for the people of NY, and the rest of our country. I had never known grief until that day. It was kind of weird because my teacher was talking about how we cant take life for granted because we might lose it one day. So her speech that day kind of fitted the situation. So there was my teacher talking when all of a sudden my math teacher came running in my room and she told somethind to my teacher. After my other teacher left our teacher said a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. At that moment I was suprised that something like that could happen. Then like 5 or 10 min. later my principal said over the PA for all the teachers to lock the rooms and for everybody to get in their classrooms. He said we were on "legal lockdown". Then he said that they would call our parents right away. My class didnt know what was going on. I was like the 6th person that they called. For every student that was leaving they had a teacher personally take them down. I was like "whoa, whats going on"?! when i saw my mom. She said there was a bomb on the twin towers. At that time my mom thought it was a bomb but then i told her it was a plane. When she told me that i was like" yeah i know but whats the big deal"? because at the time i still thought it was an accident. After my parents picked me and my sister up we went to the supermarket. I guess that the 2nd plane crashed into the other tower when we were in the supermarket because when i got home all i saw on tv was replays of the 2nd plane hitting the towers. At the time i didnt like really care i dont know why. I was like forget about it and i started to watch BET. But then when i saw when the towers collapsed it caught my attention. Then i got scared because i thought how about if they target small ordinary buildings like mine? But then I learned about the attack and why they did it and i understood it more.
