That day will be etched in my memory forever. I was doing my morning chores and getting ready to watch Live with Regis and Kelly. It was about 8:55 when I went into the living room with my 9 month old son and put the TV on. The first thing I saw was the first tower with smoke pouring out of it. I hear them say a plane it the building. I thought great that doesn't do much for my fear of flying. Like a lot of people I thought that it was a small plane until I heard a lady on the phone saying that it was a jet and that it looked like the pilot was drunk. She saw it happen from the top of her building. I decided to call my mother and I said "ma, did you see what happened?" "Yeah" she said "what's going on?" I don't know I tell her they said a plane hit the building. We got off the phone and I called my friend to let her know what was going on because she was at work. As I'm on the phone with her I see another explosion and say to her there was an explosion. ( I couldn't see the other building with the angle they had the camera on.) She starte screaming we're being attacked! I call back my mother and we are screaming and crying. My daughter (who was off from school that day due to fleas in her school) comes in and I tell her go back in my room and watch TV. I couldn't call my husband because he is a teacher and I didn't know what was going on there. Anyway, my husband finally calls me to see what is going on and I tell him. I see across the screen for police, firemen, emt's, paramedic's to report to work so I call my mother again because my sister and her fiance (who was already at work) to tell my sister to go to work. My sister answers the phone and is yelling at me (she's a little nasty) that is her day off!!! Can anyone believe that??? Actually she didn't know exactly what was going on. When she found out she went. Anyway I watching the news alone when the first tower fell. I was scared to death!! Through this my husband is stil calling me (when he can get through, the phones were down most of the day) asking where his father is when I realize, my brother!!! He worked for the phone company at that time and was sometimes working right across the street. Now I'm really panicking because I know he is at work and can't get in touch with my mother (the phones again) by this time the second tower has fallen. I'm crying hysterically!! I can't move away from the TV. My husband calls and I told him "They're gone" He says "What do you mean they're gone?" I said "they collapsed the Twin Towers aren't there anymore!" He was just stunned. His school was in lock down and parents were coming to get there kids. He said it was crazy there. He finally came home and we just watched TV all day and all night. Even slept with the TV on. My sister and her fiance had the awful job of picking up debris. When I finally spoke to her she was shell shocked when I asked her if you found anyone she said there is no one to be found. Only body parts. Her fiance was working on a patient at 7 World Trade when the horn sounded and they started screaming for everyone to run. He had to leave the patient there. He said it was the hardest thing he ever had to do. My husband's cousin lost 4 people very close to him. One his best friend and neighbor and one his cousin who was a fireman. Tell us your story: I received a call shortly after I arrived at work and the only information I had until I left was through subsequent calls and via the internet. The radio provided detail and the computer provided images but nothing prepared me for actually getting home and seeing what had happened. As I think back, the entire episode seems like an out-of-body experience. Seeing the images over and over didn't make it real to me and even now, almost one year after, I have to think back to make sure that it indeed happen. I flew out of Little Rock National Airport one week afterward and was extremely apprehensive until the plane actually lifted off the runway. We flew into Philadelphia and ended up in New York City on Friday, September 21. I remember standing across in New Jersey and looking at Manhattan, walking toward Ellis Island, which was closed, and everytime something flew overheard, everyone stopped their run, their walk, their bike ride and looked skyward. We spent the entire day in the city but the most haunting image was leaving the city and looking back. The image of the skyline of Manhattan with the smoke still rolling is still with me. On this anniversary-I feel even worse just seeing what everyone has gone through over this year. Her fourth child will never know his father and his other three children miss him dearly. It took too long, too short now in retrospect. I watched our principal walk up to the front, and instinctivly I knew that something was wrong, because he only ever speaks if something bad had happened concerning the school, which was almost never. I DID NOTICE HOWEVER, THE THREE MEN IN FRONT OF ME AND MY BOSS, ACTED VERY STRANGE. THEY WOULD ONE AT A TIME GET UP AS SO TO GO TO THE BATHROOM, LOCATED RIGHT BEHIND THE COCK PIT, THEN JUST STAND THERE AND LOOK BACK AT THE PASSANGERS, POSSIBLY 1 TO 2 MINUETS EACH. THE FIRST GENTLEMAN I NOTICED DOING THIS REALLY DID NOT ALARM ME OR EVEN GIVE ME REASON TO GIVE IT A SECOND THOUGHT. WHEN THE SECOND OF THREE OF THEM DID THE SAME THING, I THOUGHT IT WAS WEIRD, BUT I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS CAUSE FOR ALARM. WHEN THE THIRD GENTLEMAN DID THE SAME THING AS THE FIRST TWO DID, THIS IS WHEN I BECAME A LITTLE BIT CONCERNED. IT WAS OBVIOUS TO ME AT THAT THESE THREE MEN WERE STEAKING OUT THIS AIRCRAFT FOR ONE REASON OR ANOTHER. I COULD THINK OF NO OTHER EXPLINATION. MIND YOU, OF ALL THREE OF THEM THAT WENT UP TO THE BATHROOM JUST BEHIND THE COCKPIT, NONE OF THEM ACTUALLY ENTERED THE BATHROOM. AT THE TIME, IT SEEMED KIND OF STRANGE BUT, I OBVIOUSLY HAD NO REASON TO BELIEVE THE WORLD WAS ABOUT TO BE ATTACKED IN AN ACT OF TERRISOM. I thought to myself that it couldn't be my husband for it hadn't been long since he left for work..I answered the phone and sure enough it was him. He asked me if I had knew which building in Manhattan, NY my father had worked in and I said I didn't know ....I asked him Why? ..He said to turn on the news to find out. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Ian Panchevre at the time I was 12 I had just moved to France from San Antonio Texas. It was September 11 2001 and about 4:30 French time I just came out of school and I was completely clueless about what just started to unfold. My dad drove up with the car he looked at me and said "get in quick!". I just stared at him and thought I had done something bad. The radio was on and both my parents were just staring into space. From what I could understand on the radio there was something involved with airplanes and the world trade center. I was confused and didn't know what to think. Then my dad spoke and adressed me and my siblings. "Two planes just hit the world trade center one hit the pentagon and another just crashed somewhere in Pitsburg, but they don't know if it's related or not." The picture of a plane hitting a tall building and the building crashing over like a bowling pin in the middle of New York kept playing over and over again in my mind. When I got to my house cnn was already on T.V. and what I saw was just hororfing. I saw the World Trade Center smoking with fire, I saw my fellow Americans in horror staring at the trade center, I saw people so desperate that they actualy were jumping out of windows. And I saw Palestinian children my age dancing in the street as if they were celebrating some miracle. I almost threw up when I saw that it was disgusting If it had been the other way around if the Palestinians were being attacked I wouldn't have celebrated. Hatred engulfed my body, I couldn't inderstand why a human being would do something so perverted to another human. Then The first tower crashed down and I truly think that millions of people world wide gasped in horror when they saw that then the second tower. What was strange was how perfect the towers looked like when they fell almost as if it was a controlled demolishon but it wasn't controlled what it was was an act of pure hatred. And after that everything became blured to my vision. That night I went to bed at about 9:30 but I stayed awake maybe up until three. Everything I saw was so unbelievable. I lived in a town called Golfe Juan but I went to school in a town called Vallauris. Now I'm not exagerating but the population in Vallauris was anywhere from 30 to 40 percent arab. That hadn't bothered before me actualy I didn't even notice it until the next day. My first class was history and that day the teachers mouth was flaring at 100 hundred miles an hour. He kept pointing at the world map to places like Saudi Arabia, Palestine, and Afganistan. My friends were sympathetic of course but the arab kids wouldn't leave me alone. They teased me and said mean things to me, they chanted Bin Laden to me and asked me stupid questions like "Did you move from the U.S. because you were afraid of Bin Laden?" and so on. Then about two weeks later I walked into the bathroom and on the wall there was graffiti. There were pictures of planes being stucked in buildings and words like "Bin Laden Fucked the Americans!" it was the entire wall and I couldn't believe that somebody actualy ment those words. The Truth is up until the tenth of September 2001 I had no idea who Bin Laden was. His name sounded familiare I think because of the U.S.S. Coal bombing but for the most part I was clueless about Terorism. The badgering countinued but that wasn't what bothered me. What bothered me was that being an American being all the good that Americans are to the world something so disgusting would happen by someone so heartless. The future rolled on and I saw many articles in magazines like Time and Newsweek and only then did the extent of what happened became realistic to me. The entire world was affected I don't think one person didn't have any encounter with 9/11. America the dream of the free world was attacked by a bunch of heartless scums. They say that time heals all wounds and in a couple of months I was back to myself again. But the media was still litered by everything that happened. They also say that you will never forget where you were the time of a major event. The older generation never forgot where they were when Kennedy got shot. And I will never forget 9/11. I think that in the end the terrorist failed. Their goal was not to run commercial airplanes into the the world trade center. But to bring fear to the American people they wanted to bring us down to our knees. But we didn't instead we became stronger and more united. And for that reason the terrorist failed. I also think that the definition of an "American" has to be rewritten. An American is not a citizen of The United States. An American is a person that believes in the freedom of speach, religion, the press, and the right to persue happines. An American ofers the best, the best food, the best entertainment, the best people and so on. An american also offers the least the weakest, the slowest and we use our power as a super nation to help other countries like Afganistan. An American can be English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Australian, Indian, Pakistanian, Russian, Saudi Arabian, Mexican, Brazilian, Canadian and of course a citizen of the United states. Anyone with the same american beliefs anyone that thinks that all men are created equally and anyone that beliefs in basic human rights is an American anyone that beliefs in Freedom is an American. Thats why I think that september eleventh wasn't an attack on the United States but an attack on humanity. So many people from so many countries and from so many cultures died that day. There crime being an American and living the dream there ancestors had for them. I also think that what september eleventh really did was clarify who was an American and who wasn't. Be strong America. Evil cannot prevail. I didn't lose a friend or a loved one that day. What I lost and what everyone else lost that day was a piece of humanism. I went downstairs and turned on the TV. The image of the plane as it crashed into the building looked like it was out of a movie. I looked down and saw the freighting headline. "World Trade Center Destroyed." I was shocked; I looked up at the picture as the plane hit the building. In mind questions seemed to go through my mind. Why? I was sitting at my computer and an eary feeling came over me. I got up went into the living room and heard the tragic news. I just started to cry. Then I prayed to GOD that he would help the victims or at least take them home with him. I think GOD helped build his kingdom that day. I will never forget. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: We were at our desks at a state office and one of our co-workers came out of the kitchen where there is a TV set. He was ashen, a private pilot himself, and blurted out that a "small" plane had hit the WTC in clear weather. We gathered around and watched in horror as the 2nd plane hit, then we heard that the Pentagon was also under attack. We heard at first it was a helicopter crash. People were very quiet, not speculating wildly really, offering some logical suggestions... maybe this, maybe that... then word came that we were all to go home, that a State of Emergency had been declared and that two of the planes had been hijacked out of our own Logan Airport. No one knew if there were any more still up there then, that was the weirdest feeling, not knowing if it was over or not. In the subway and looking at random people, wondering if from their expression I could tell if they knew or not. People on cell phones shaking their heads, telling someone on the other end that "it would be alright". Off the train and walking home wondering what else had happened. Had more planes been hijacked and crashed while I was underground? I looked up in the sky and saw no planes and wondered. Looking at the police officers, firemen and ambulances driving past and thinking about them, the everyday heroes risking their lives for all of us. Finally at home and dazed, trying to call my friends in NYC... and not getting through. Watching TV and then seeing with my own eyes the WTC tower crumble and fall, twice. Hearing about Flight 93 crashing in Shanksville PA and what that meant. Gathering up the slim bits and pieces of "facts" and "news" and trying desperately to fit them together into something resembling coherant reality. A roller coaster ride of on-the-scene news reports, tape of the disaster, the awestruck witnesses... a collage of snippets and vingettes that could only provide a few sketchy tiles of a puzzling mosaic. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I got in to work around 9AM and immediately someone said that a plane had hit the WTC. I thought it was an accident and went into my office. I am chief attorney at my company and we had another attorney, a good friend, who worked remotely from Reston VA. We were set up to have a teleconference but when I called her she was very distraught and told me in a very broken voice that her partner, a pilot for American Airlines, had taken off that morning, she didn't know where he was headed and she heard that it was an AA plane that hit the WTC. I immediately got off the phone and went into the TV room to see if I could get any information that would help her.The news was already on and some people in the company were watching. In the meantime the other plane had hit and the newscaster was saying that it was a deliberate attack. I was speechless. I grew up in Florida but my family came from the NY area and when I was 12 they took me to NYC to visit family. I fell in love with the place and decided that I would move there at the first opportunity. So when I finished college my husband and I, with our toddler daughter, did. I worked at NYU. My first job. I moved away to go to graduate school but always felt that NYC was my spiritual home. So when the planes hit I felt as if my home town had been attacked. As I was watching, all of a sudden there was just a big cloud at the south tower. I said "I can't see it! What happened?" It was gone. I was in shock. When the other tower went down I broke down crying. I couldn't believe it. It felt like a movie except that it also felt too real. Who could speak? They evacuated the Cleveland downtown and our building. I stayed a couple of hours and watched the news. I called my friend. Her partner's plane had been re-routed to land in Kansas City. Thank God he was ok. I went home and watched the news until bedtime. For the next two weeks, at least, I watched the news every minute I wasn't at work. All I could think about was the people I thought were still trapped, hurt, in the ruins. I was hoping to see rescues. I was scheduled to present a talk at a law conference in London later that week. I thought that the conference would be cancelled for sure, out of respect. They didn't cancel it. I had done considerable preparation for the talk but I just could not go. I wasn't afraid to fly but I felt it was so unseemly to go on with business as usual when all those people were still missing and, presumably, hurt. The shock diminished with time, of course, but it never has gone. On the anniversaries I spend the day quietly at home. I watch the memorial and tapes that I made. Remembering. I feel that I am paying my respects. My heart goes out to the families, but mostly to the people who died in such a horrible and useless way. I know that the site has to be rebuilt, if only to make a statement. But a large part of me would like the entire site to be a memorial. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was watching The Today Show that beautiful morning. I heard Matt Lauer say that a small plane had hit the World Trade Tower. As I turned my attention to the television, I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I had a sense of panic and despair. My husband worked at the Prudential Tower in Boston and I called him immediately thinking all towers might be vulnerable. A man from our small town was killed as he walked by the Towers that fateful morning. He was killed by falling debris on his way to a business meeting.What a wonderful family is left grieveing this great family man. Sadness enveloped me days later when I wondered how I would visit my granddaughter in Texas as I felt I would never fly in an airplane again. Since then, I have flown several times. I will not let the terrorists destroy my life or keep my family apart, although none of our lives will ever the the same. My heart goes out to all of the innocent vicitms and their families as I cannot imagine their pain. May God bless them all and may God bless America. Tell us your story: On Sept 11, 2001 my son called on his cell phone and told me that a hijacked plane had crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade center in New York City. No, I said as a first response. I couldn't let myself believe this. Surely i must have heard it wrong. "Are you sure " I gasped. He said yes, it just came over the news.I tried to find some information on the internet but the details were sketchy at beset. I told everyone in my office what I had heard. No one could believe it. My heart was racing and tears stained my eyes. I was in schock and disbelief as the events unfolded. My mind was racing and I said " not here, this is America". I kept my ears tuned to the local radio stations searching for any information i could get. Shock and horror again filled my heart and mind when the second plane hit the other tower, and then again with the other plane crashes. Our office employees were all straining to hear everything that was going on. Never in my mind did I think that the towers would fall and so many would die. Pictures in my mind played over and over again the next few days as tears stained my face hearing of the calls from the doomed people on the planes and inside the trade center to their families. Such precious moments to the families and some were not home to hear the call. Babies being born without a father. Mothers dieing trying to get to safety and be with their families again. All the heros in the mass of distruction. Our nation had been brutally mauled and wounded. Our president was quick and swift to raise to the challenge of this act of war. We as a country came together to face the adversary. Everyone quickly bought shirts, ribbons, pens and other items to show our support of our country and the men and women who died, and the soldiers that were to go to let the killers know that we were alive and well. That we could not be broken by one murderous act. Today it has been a year of emotional ups and downs for us as Americans. The families have tried to move on some with success some not. As their loved ones were buried with honor , others were not so lucky to have anything found to bury. Closure was being searched for today with the families and also by all of us as a country. The emotions are still just below the surface and although not realized until today a repeat of broken hearts and broken dreams. Our only hope is that God will have mercy on us as a family and country to make the right decisions to keep our peace again. Came home from school at about 11o``clock (it was the first day after school). It seemed to be a normalday butitwasn`t a normal one. I didn`t watch TV or listen to radio until 16.30 o`clock. At this point a relation said something about a terror attack to New York. Two big pessenger planes crashed the two biggest towers, which are or were called `The World Trade Ccenter`. In a flash I switced on The radio and TV. At every programm you could see the terrible attack of the `idiots?. I felt sceard of a terror attack in my country or city. I prayed for the many dead people. As I heard the nummer of the people that died, I stand there in shock. Next day there was the whole school in church (not only because of the attack, it went regular to church, because of the second school day), but we prayed for the death. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: A Clear and Sunny Day in September It was the last day of our Fall vacation in Washington D.C. Early that morning my wife Judy and I had driven downtown with my step-son, Jerry. Taking a shortcut, we passed through the parking lot of the Pentagon. Jerry was going to work while we would spend the day sightseeing. Later, we were going to meet for dinner, to celebrate my 47th birthday. Then Judy and I were flying back to Cleveland. After Jerry parked his car and went to his office, Judy and I had breakfast and stopped at Starbucks. While Judy went in for coffee, I waited outside. It was about 9:20 A.M. A man from one of the offices in the building came outside for a cigarette. He told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York. His company was involved with the airline industry and he had gotten calls about it. When he turned on the T.V. he saw a live broadcast of a second jet striking the other tower of the World Trade Center. He said he knew that it was a terrorist attack. When Judy came out of Starbucks I told her what had happened. We were shocked. As we walked through the tall buildings towards the Mall area we talked about what it would be like to see a jet hit one of them. We watched the faces of the other pedestrians to see if they had heard the news but it didn?t seem like anyone had. Everyone looked calm and normal. As we approached the Mall, we saw a huge cloud of angry, black smoke billowing across the sky behind the Washington Monument. We didn?t know what was on fire but we knew that it was big and close. The first sirens hadn?t even sounded yet. We continued to walk towards our destination, the Holocaust Museum, less than a mile from the Pentagon. We speculated that perhaps a jet had crashed at Ronald Reagan National Airport nearby. Then we started to hear the first sirens and see the first emergency vehicles. As we continued to walk closer to the museum we observed small groups of people standing on the street corners or in front of their office buildings. We thought they were waiting for busses. As we got close to the office of the National Park Service we could tell that the buildings were being evacuated. One women was angry about not being allowed to go back inside. A man inside an unmarked, white SUV parked in the street was directing pedestrians to cross. He seemed very tense. We got to the Holocaust Museum and joined a group of tourists waiting in line. It was still before 10 A.M. and the museum wasn?t open yet. As they passed out tickets for the first 10 A.M. group to enter, we spoke to the people around us. The group in front of us had heard about the World Trade Center attack. From the group behind us we learned that the Pentagon had been bombed! We didn?t hear the explosion because the tall buildings had muffled the sound. We began to feel afraid and thought it?d be best to be inside the museum, perhaps in the basement. As we waited anxiously to go in, three workers were leaving the building. One of them said, ?I wouldn?t be standing in front of a Jewish museum.? As we pondered this, we started hearing rumors that the State Department had also been bombed. The staff of the museum seemed unsure about what to do so we waited a little longer. At 10:10 A.M. we heard what sounded like a loud explosion. It was so near that I could feel the reverberations. I?m still not sure what it was. Perhaps it was a sonic boom. We later learned that a section of the Pentagon had collapsed. We looked at each other and I said, ?We?re out of here!? The group of tourists all dispersed at the same time. We still didn?t know that a jet had intentionally crashed into the Pentagon. I thought that the entire East Coast was under attack from some unknown enemy that was exploding bombs all around us. I was expecting a nuclear attack next, since we were in the nation?s capitol. Everything seemed surreal as we headed towards the open Mall area across the street from the Washington Monument. That was the only open space away from all of the government buildings. Just then we looked up and saw an F-16 jet fighter streak across the sky. Rather than feeling reassured by this sight, we both just felt a huge wave of fear. Things must be really bad when you see F-16?s flying over the air space of the capitol! Feeling like we were in a war zone, we stopped under a tree where Judy sat down and searched her purse for her cell phone. She remembered the battery had run down so she left it with our luggage in Jerry?s car trunk. She searched her address book and found his office phone number. She was determined to reach him, to find him and flee, or at least to all die together. As we got up to start walking towards a phone and his office, a police car pulled around the base of the Washington Monument and announced on a bull horn that everyone had to leave, the Mall was closed! This was the first and only official notification that we ever got that an emergency was unfolding. (We later learned that there was no disaster or air raid siren to warn those outside. No one, not even congresspersons, had an evacuation or emergency disaster plan). Judy, who already had P.T.S.D., was triggered by the unfolding series of events. She just wanted to hide under that tree. It was the only place she felt safe. But we had to get out of there. She seemed frozen and disassociated. As we started walking she said, ?O.K. Now we have to walk real slow.? I must have lost it a little then also because I was scared and I could see what was happening to her and I knew I had to take care of her and get us both out. I felt my ?fight or flight? instinct kick in. I said, ?We have to leave now! We have to walk fast and get out of here.? I knew we would have to go far so we couldn?t run, even though I felt like it. Judy grabbed my hand hard and off we walked, towards the White House! It was the only direction we could have gone to get away from the Pentagon and get to Jerry?s office. But in order to get out we had to pass through streets lined by big, tall, official, U.S. government buildings. Although we wanted to avoid them we couldn?t. I remember thinking, ?Well, we could die now, but we have to walk through.? As we walked up 14th street I kept seeing things that were clearly amiss. I knew Judy was upset and scared. So was I. There were more sirens and emergency vehicles and ambulances. At first there were few people on the street, but soon there were more and more as the buildings were evacuated. Some were upset, and some looked grim. A few were even walking towards the Mall! We reached a hotel a block away from the White House. It seemed like a good place to find a phone so we stopped. We didn?t realize how close we were to the White House and hadn?t considered that the White House was a possible target! We waited in line for the phone. Many other people were trying to phone out. One woman was taking messages from people in line and relaying them on, through her family. Judy got to a phone and called Jerry?s office and his cell phone. His office had been evacuated and the cell phone traffic was disrupted. Judy was having a lot of difficulty finding the focus and concentration she needed to dial the long string of numbers and to follow the many phone prompts needed to use our calling card. Finally, she called Jerry?s father in Cleveland who was able to reach Jerry on his cell phone. He had been driving around north of the city hoping to hear from us. When he learned of our location he said, ?Tell them to get the hell out of there!? He had heard rumors of the Mall being on fire and that the State Department was bombed. He had been worried that that?s where we were going. We agreed to move on and set a time to try to reach Jerry again as we had lost the connection. Judy was relieved to have had contact with Jerry. While Judy was on the phone I had to use the restroom. I considered the irony of dying while on the toilet and worried about being separated from Judy. As I walked back to the phones I felt a huge wave of anger at the people who had done this to us. I felt that they would have to pay. I guess that was the ?fight? part of the fight or flight response. As Judy finished her calls I studied the map to see how we could find our way out of the city. I saw a woman sobbing out of control in the lobby. We left the hotel and walked north. The street was filled with people. It was almost impossible to judge their thoughts or feelings. Many seemed quite calm and relaxed. Some talked and joked with their friends and walked slowly and casually. Others looked upset, tense and grim. We had heard talk of another jet missing out there. Only later did we learn of the heroic efforts of the passengers on Flight 93. That jet had crashed in a field in Pennsylvania, rather than somewhere in D.C. I feel those passengers may have saved our lives that day. We continued our journey on foot out of the city. The traffic was totally jammed with cars trying to get out. We saw many long black limo?s with tinted windows leaving. There were white vans with men in black uniforms. At one point I saw a solder in full camo running down the middle of the street clearing traffic for a gray, emergency bus from the Walter Reed Medical Center, going to the Pentagon. We had little information about what was happening. I heard some from a car that had the news blaring out of its open window. It wasn?t good. There were small crowds gathered in front of buildings. A woman tripped and fell to the ground. She was helped up and continued on. Most stores were closed. The Metro was shut down. We found another hotel and Judy again called Cleveland and relayed messages to Jerry. We set up a possible place to meet. We also learned a plane suspected in the attacks was grounded in Cleveland. I was shocked by the enormity of the morning?s events. As we walked in the clear, warm, sunshine, away from the destruction downtown, the crowd looked as if they might have been on a holiday, freed unexpectedly from work. Inside, I felt like a war refugee escaping from a battlefield. We tried to avoid the rough parts of town as we walked north and then west. I stopped at a small electronics store that was open and bought a radio. I had to know what was going on. While Judy waited outside she was part of a small crowd watching the breaking news on a T. V. in the store window. Our hearts sank with shock and horror and fear as we saw the devastation in New York. We walked for about 3 hours that day, until we reached a bridge that I recognized and got close to the area where we hoped to meet Jerry. As we walked up the street we saw Jerry walking casually towards us, sipping on a McDonalds coke! We all hugged each other, we were so glad to find each other again. We had to eat, and we called back to Cleveland on a payphone to let everyone know we were safe. Jerry offered to drive us back to Cleveland as all airlines were grounded. We spent the entire ride back listening to the news on N.P.R. When we got home I watched the news on T.V. for days on end. It was a part of my survival mechanism, I had to stay informed. Thankfully, I had a few days of vacation left. Judy tried to work but couldn?t. We were both traumatized by what we had experienced. We tried to comfort one another as best we could. Jerry went back to D.C. the next evening and was back to work the following day. We couldn?t believe his office was open. We were worried about him being back in D.C. so soon. He is a brave young man. It has been several months since the attacks of September 11th. For the first few months I suffered with a stress and grief reaction. Judy struggled with P.T.S.D. We took lots of long walks together in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and worked through our feelings. We forged an even closer bond, because we survived that day together. More than any single day or event in my life, September 11th has changed me, for the good, I think. I have become more grateful to be alive, more compassionate to others, more in touch with my feelings. I will never forget those who died that day, or were injured, either in body or in spirit. My cousin?s husband, father to three young children, died that day. Who could have known that on such a clear and sunny day in September, we would be swept up in a tragedy that would change our lives forever? Tell us your story: I was sitting at my desk when my boss came rushing through the office on his cell phone, stopped at my desk and said a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. I immediately turned on the radio and went to the CNN website and actually watched in horror! Within minutes I could not belives what I was witnessing, another plan. I called my husband on his cell phone (he had not heard the news yet). "Oh my gosh, honey two planes just crashed one right afterthe other into the World Trade Center" not believing what I was tellin him, he went into a conferenc room and turned on the t.v. and we both watched in silence. At first I thought "oh my gosh" but when the second plane crashed I got such a sick feeling that this was a deliberate act of some sick individual. The rest of the day in our office building was a blurr. When I returned home from work, I was never so happy to see my children and my husband. All sports and after school activities in our area had been canceled. Together as a family we watched station after station until the wee hours of the morning. (we taped about 3 entire videos and packed them away). Having just lost my mother just 2 months prior, my heart just broke in two for all of the victims and their families. You know you heard your great grandparents speak of world war I, II and neighbors talk about viet nam, and now we experience this - the thought of war horrifies me, when I watch the history channel, I cry for all the people who lived/died through world war I, II, viet nam, the korean war. I was awake and still in bed when a friend from Atlanta called me and told me to turn on CNN asap. She said someone has just flown into one of the New York trade center buildings. I turned on the TV just in time to see the second plane fly into the south building. I watched in horror as the New Yorkers stood stunned in the street and begun to realize this was no accident and their city had turned into a war zone. My daughter watched with her wide innocent eyes and kept asking me, "mommie, it's just Hollywood, isn't it, it's not for real, right?" How do you explain such evil, premeditated terror to a seven year old? I explained to her that it was not Hollywood, that this horrible deed was, in fact, all too real. She was very upset and I kept her home from school that day. I knew no one personally in New York, but have friends that have relatives that were there that day. They have accounts of running for their lives, having to move from their homes, the darkness of that day, literally and figuratively, the brave emergency rescue people with hardly no one living to rescue. This day will be forever seared into my memory as the day one of the most heinous, evil acts was ever committed against everything American and what we stand for; freedom and going to great lengths to ensure that everyone has this freedom. One year later, I am left with the hope of our great country, the realization that we can survive anything and the fact that we will run from nothing.
