Tell us your story: I remember september 11th 2001 vividly..I was late for work...something very very rare...my daughter was late for a court appearance for parking in a handicapped parking place..(no other parking places were open!)..I left and had just got in my car when she called on my cell phone and said "mom..you have to come look at the tv"..so I ran back upstairs..when I saw the hole in the first tower hit ..I told her it was no accident..there is a no fly zone around those buildings..people just don't fly airplanes there...she said.."mom you don't know that for sure.." and at that moment the next plane hit..I remember saying "OH God..and Oh ....as I sat down..I had a terrible sinking feeling of doom in the pit of my stomach..I started shaking..I called my Husband at the time...He worked at a prison south of Houston..I told him to go in the break room and turn on the tv...I guess he could hear the panic in my voice..he immediately said ok and hung up..from then on..I remember telling Sarah..we are being attacked...why have they not grounded the planes..I stayed with her for a while but I had to leave and go to work..Our apartment complex was quiet..but on the freeway you could see people's expressions while driving..everything was in slow motion..people were on their cell phones..some pulled over...Sarah called me to tell me that the pentagon had been hit...I had to pull over then..I wept..I managed to go on to work..also..the day went on..we watched the towers fall..it was so sad..I spoke with all my family members including my older daughter in Shreveport La..where Bush flew into at Barksdale..they saw airforce one being escorted in by military jets. Later that day..our neighbors who were muslim..closed all their blinds...would not look you in the eye...they were just as afraid as we were of the change that took place that day.. ..There was a definate paradigm shift that day..all in one day..less than 6 hours it took..the world is different..and we cannot forget why...We must all be prepared for another attack..our enemy is still out there...and they want to destroy us..they will not stop till we are all dead or in submission...we must take the fight to them..and honor our dead with their defeat!!! Then the unordinary occured. We were told. All of us, including the teachers were gathered into an assembly as a whole school, as the tragedy was related to us. I work for Modern Continental Construction as a material expediter/receiver on the Route 3 Expansion project in northeast Massachusetts. To be honest, it was like any other day around here. I was busy processing orders and doing my best to restrain myself from beheading the next guy who asked me where his order of nuts and bolts was. At around 9:30 my phone rings, and instead of picking it up..I put it on speaker. It's my girlfriend Diane. With a very shaky voice, the only words out of her mouth were "A plane just flew into the World Trade Center". I asked her "What the hell are you talking about?" She just repeated the refrain that would become the mantra for the office in the next few hours. I told her that I would check the internet and see what's going and that I would talk to her later. To be honest, the first thing that popped into my head was that a plane flying out of Logan International had lost control and crashed into the World Trade Center in Boston. It's not unlikely since the take off and landing patterns for Logan fly right over it. By now, there were a couple of people gathering around my cubicle, since everybody heard my conversation over the speaker phone. So I log on to the web and check out boston.com (the Boston Globe's website), and sure enough....there's the tower, belching that sickening black smoke. At the time, there really was no idea that it was a terrorist attack. But I knew in my heart of hearts. The picture told the story....a clear beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. "There's no way in hell that was pilot error", I thought to myself. Honestly, I couldn't tell you any more specific beyond that. I just remember the emotions that I felt...and the reactions of others. I remember the fear, the anger, the confusion. For the rest of the day...we sat glued to the TV in the conference room....or to our desks with our computers locked on to CNN or MSNBC or Fox. I don't know how I'm going to feel come the anniversary. A year ago...I spoke to my grandmother (God rest her soul) about it. At the time, she was recovering from cancer surgery, but the prognosis wasn't good. She never thought she would see something like again in her lifetime, having been through Pearl Harbor. It was different back then, on the 1 year anniversary, the country was at war with a known enemy. There was a feeling that something was being done about it. The world was united against evil. Today, we're fighting an unknown enemy who does not value their own life or those of others. There's a feeling of incompleteness...... I was heading out the door to do some shopping when the special report came on. I stopped for a secondto watch and thought a plane had hit the tower by accident, and then the second one hit and I couldn't even think, I remember just standing there in front of the tv thinking My God! what's happening? I made a few phone calls to family members and they all met at the house that evening. Growing up in 50's and 60's I guess we all thought we were ammuned to such attacks and it's hard to think that anyone could impart such evil and create such devestation. Our thinking was forever changed. We were not invincable. It's been a long year, having two sons in the military, one in the Navy and one in the Army. You the time will come when they will be deployed to another land infested with madmen. That time for my oldest son is Sept.16,2002 One year later. I will not know where he is. But I do know I feel honored to know our country is in the hands of men and women like him who feel priviledged to serve and protect the freedom and rights of others. I was surprised no one woke me up since they usually do. Then my sister came into my room and told me that the Twin Towers was hit by airplanes. Of course I wanted to know why and what else happened so I got up from my bed and went into the living room. Once I saw the TV, which was showing the plane hitting the towers, all I could think about was "Oh my god..." I went to New York before and I was thinking about the Twin towers. I watched the news for a couple of minutes. Every channel was breaking news about the attack. I also found out that there was other airplanes, one that hit the pentagon and another that went down that was suppose to hit the White house. At the bus I remember the only thing everyone was talking about was the attack, even at school. I took me awhile until I knew why there was an attack on America. Tell us your story: A Brother's Eulogy for Marco Alberto Motroni -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- by H?ctor Juan Motroni September 26, 2001 My brother was a good man, and he was killed by evil people. People with a twisted view of Islam. People who have violated the most basic teachings of love and caring found in the Koran. And we ask, "Why?" "Why does God allow a few evil men to create so much pain for so many good people?" Father Ryan, today, and other religious leaders, during this past week, have given us answers that provide much comfort. They have said that my brother and the other good people who perished in the attack have been called by God and are now in a much better place. They have told us that we must not blame God? that God has given us free will, and that when confronted by evil, weak people will perform heinous and sinful acts. And as we hear their wisdom, we select the answers that work for us and that comfort us? and our faith in God is renewed and strengthened. But in the middle of the night, when we wake up and realize this is not a nightmare, we hurt once again, and we again ask, "Why?" And as the night becomes morning and our hurt turns to anger, we want to take action and to do something? ?but, what can we do? The brave men and women of the New York City police and fire departments who first responded to the attack and who perished were the first to take action. The heroic rescue workers who followed them continue to take action, and we now have a better appreciation for what these brave and selfless people are ready to do for us day in and day out. Mayor Giuliani and Governor Pataki have guided us through a most difficult time, and they continue to act and put the city back on its feet. The President, in his eloquent speech last week, outlined the actions that our government will take to fight terrorism and warned us that this will be a long fight. Our government and its elected officials are taking action. But what can we do? To answer that question, I look to my brother's life. My brother was a good man, and he was killed by evil people. He was a respected businessman?an athlete?an artist. As a businessman, he was one of the most respected traders on the floors of the exchanges - a respect expressed by people he had known and whom we met while waiting in lines to see lists of survivors. As a member of the Board of the Mercantile Exchange, he worked to strengthen the Exchange and make it a pillar of our free market. As an athlete, he loved basketball and baseball, and played with his sons and their friends? all of whom were half his age. The old man showed these younger men how to win with the finesse and soft touch that he learned in city playgrounds from friends like Leo Roche and Tony Mina. As a musician, we thank God that we can still hear his rich and melodious voice in the records that we have of him singing with the Orquesta Novel. But, my brother was more than that. My brother was a good man, and he was killed by evil people. He was a dedicated husband to his wonderful wife Emily.He was a loving father to his sons Mark, George and Chris. He was a concerned cousin to Bea, Mechy and Roli. He looked after our second cousins Annecita, Myrnita and Tonito who last week left no leaf unturned in their search for him. He was a best friend to Carlos whom he considered another brother and to his sister-in-law Angie. And, my brother was more than that. My brother was a good man, and he was killed by evil people. He was "un Alma de Dios - A soul of God." We have seen him take the shirt off his back and give it to family? friends? strangers. He was kind and selfless. He was funny and witty. He appreciated this great country and the opportunity that it has given to our immigrant family. He was perplexed by the lack of appreciation that many citizens have for this country and its institutions. And so as I ask, "what can I do?", I hear him say, "Show the terrorists that they have made us stronger, not weaker, by going back to your normal lives as soon as possible. Support the president and appreciate the work of those who are willing to give up their lives to save ours. Above all, be kind to others and show the generosity of spirit that we have seen this last week not just today, but tomorrow, and the day after, and all the days of your lives." In his memory, I ask that we act as he would have asked us to act and that we practice the kindness and generosity of spirit that we saw throughout his life. For my part, it will be easy to follow his example as I remember him. I will remember our childhood in Cuba, and his coming to my aid when a fight would break out. I will remember his courage as a 10 year-old when our father died. I will remember the day, shortly after we came to the United States, that he introduced me to what he thought was the best drink in New York City - the eggcream. He liked chocolate. I liked vanilla. I will remember him explaining the rules of American football to me as we watched the 1961 New York Giants and I will remember him taking me down to the park at 145th Street and Riverside Avenue to play the game. I tried; he played. I will remember him introducing me to basketball and always choosing me on his team, so I would not have to sit out the first game. He was an excellent player - a walk-on in the George Washington High School team. I was mediocre at best, and when he wasn't at the park, I'd have to wait to play. I will remember working together at the Ateneo Cubano. He and I cleaned the club after the weekend dances. The worst part of the job was cleaning the bathrooms. He would fight with me to clean them, so I would not have to. As we cleaned the club, we'd put records on the PA system and listen to Cuban music. He would take to the microphone and sing, and I would listen. I will remember his pranks - never ill-intentioned, always ending with laughs and good nature. I will remember the calls we made to each other's office around 9:00 in the mornings. He always had something funny to say, and it felt so good talking to him. I will remember the pride in his face the last time I saw him at George's and Christine's engagement party. In typical fashion, he was as attentive to the help as he was to the guests. It seemed every time I looked at him, he was tipping some one else. I will remember the goodness in my brother, and try to practice the kindness and generosity of spirit that he showed towards the whole world. There was a comotion in the hallway, all I understood was a plane hit the twin towers. I could not believe it. I ran to get the T.V. that was still locked up, it was difficult to get a reception, but we managed. I could not believe what I was seeing. Chill filled my body as I tryed to hold back the tears. All the children in the room stared at my and the other teacher in the room. As we witnessed the first tower collapes, my heart dropped. I froze and didn't know how to react. Sadness filled me and then the tears came. My collegue was worried about her husband who works in New York and was on his way to the City. She tried to contact him, but all lines were either jamed or dowm. We comforted each other and tryed to find a way to tell our fourth graders about this tragedy, which probably might affect them directly, since some parents work in New York. Some children where in shock, but others could not comprehend what was happening. We allowed them to watch the T.V. report and repeat of the collape. Parents came poring into the school to take their children home with fear that they might be in danger. This was not the way I planned to start the school year. September 11th 2001 I was sitting in my 3rd period class when our principle came on the intercom and said this: "Please excuse the interupption but if all the teachers would please turn your tv's on to channel 4...I have bad news...(his voice a little shaky)The World Trade Centers have been hit by airplanes...(at this everyone went quite, people started to cry)...if you would please take a moment and pray for the people that are trying to save everyone and especially the for the people in the Trade Centers." I was in complete and utter shock...I didn't know what to do or say...all I knew was that something bad happened...at the time I was 12 and didn't know what to do...but later that day when my mom had picked me up from school(around 12:00)she told me what happened and what the Trade Centers were...and that mostly all the people that were in the Trade Centers had died. I started to cry. Around 3:30 my best friend called me up crying hysterically...I asked her what was worng and she told me that her uncle called when the first Trade Center went down and he said that he was okay(he was in the 2nd trade center)but when the 2nd one went down they never got a call from him...while she was telling me this I started to cry. Every morning I listen to music and on the radio station that I was listening to people kept on calling in saying that the World Trade Centers had been hit by planes. Tell us your story: Hello My name is Jason Moore, I remember that day, I was in a resturant eating breakfast, when I looked over my shoulder at the tv and saw one of the world trade centers on fire, I thought, That's unfortunate and that I hope they will be able to put the fire out. I had no Idea that A plane had crashed into the building. That day I was going to the military base to Fix my military status. I started to finish my breafast when I looked over my shoulder and saw that the second world trade tower was on fire and then I heard that a second plane has crashed. then on I sat there watching the unfortunate events unfold. I could not finish my breakfast, I was aw struck to learn this was a terrorist attack. At that time we had our annual state fair, they closed it down for two days, the base was locked down, everyone around me was somber. I went home to turn on the tv and watch futher coverage, only to find that another plane had crashed into the pentagon, and one in PA. I told my roommate "I can't belive that this is happening. One year later I went to the same resturant, on a rainy day, to only hear the screems and dispair of those who were in the Tragity, I can only Feel sarrow and remorse wanting to help some way. She had joined the Air National Guard and was stationed at Sheppard AFB in Texas. Just after the second plane hit the WTC, I was going to call her to wish her Happy Birthday when she called and said she only had one minute to talk that they were on "lock down" and would call again when she could. It was a while before we heard from her and while she was stationed there, she was told not to draw attention to herself by marching in formation or wearing her uniform off-base when they were allowed to go again. We had no idea if she would be called up or transferred to another location, and with five children and a husband at home, it was really hard for them. Now, she faces a trip to Kuwait in either November or December for anywhere from two weeks to one year. We're behind her all the way, but are very concrned for her safety. Tell us your story: I was walking to school that morning with my new friend Sandra, her and family had just moved from California that weekend and this was going to be her first day in school. I walked her into the councelers office, she got her paper work and I showed her around the school and introduced her to her teachers. We went back into the office at around 9 o'clock and our principle Mr. Wire came on the intercome and told every one to turn on the TV to the news, so every one did. What we all saw and heard forever changed our lives. At the time there was only one of the buildings rolling with smoke. Me and Sandra just stared at the TV then looked at each other.We both had tears in our eyes. We kept watching the news and then there was another plane it looked like it was going slow but then it hit the other tower. I just stood there with my hand over my mouth. Truthfully I didn't know what to do. I was scared for our country and for the victims in the towers. I am truly very sorry for the families and friends of the victims, I pray for you often that God will put peace in your heart and that something like this will never happen again. In Feburary of 2004 I enlisted into the US Army. A few weeks after I graduted in May I headed off to bootcamp. Now I am stationed over in Germany. As usual when I woke I ignored the TV and Radio and proceeded to go on-line to read the news but for some reason I could not get onto the news sites on the net at 7:30 am pacific/ 10:30am eastern, so I read email and such, took a shower, dressed, and started driving to work. I neded to get gas and when I pulled into the station at about 8:30 pacific/ 11:30 eastern, all the cars radios were not playing music but were instead all playing news which totally struck me as odd. I asked the guy next to me in an old beat-up pickup "is anything going on?" "Hell", he stated, the World Trade Center was hit by jetliners and so was the Pentagon and other airliners are heading off their flight paths." In shock, after filling my tank I dirverted my normal pth to work and went down the street to my best friends shop. Watched TV there and the TV only showed a huge cloud of smoke over NYC because both towers were down. After a half hour, I shot back to my home, called into work stating I would be late, and turned on the TV and the Internet. My new neighbor was totally upset having just moved to the LA area from NYC 3 months earlier. Went to work listening to newsradio and becomming more and more freaked. Working in the advertising dept for a newspaper, I knew I had to be there to accept ad execute the massive changes in advertising from my clients. My best friend's cousin Worked in the WTC, the tower that fell later in the afternoon. It took her over 24 hours to reach home in NJ and everyone thought she was dead. I had met her once. My concern about NYC was that a domono effect would cause buildings to topple and topple. The Pentagon was a disaster. The fact that the 4th airliner turned over the Cleveland area (my hometown) gave me the creeps. As I learned about the organization that did this, the more I saw the links politically with the German Nazi Party of the 1930's. I guess the thing that bothers me is that so much of the world, seeing it live on TV, hearing Bin Laden pople admit they did it, still think the Jews did it or the US government did it. That is more frightening to me then the event... it is litrally arguing that the daylit sky is Red. Masive majorities of Muslins around the world think jews did it or the US even after hearing Bin Laden and his people admit it. Amazing that people think they are civilized. I think most if not all of the civilized Muslims have moved to the West already and the worst of them have taken advantage of this to infiltrate the West and worse will happen. I also believe Iraq has a major hand in this because after the event suddenly Saddam talks in religious terms and Sadam is the type that would be behind something like this but he would supply bin laden and his followers with special radio channels and equipment to do it so it could not be tracked. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was scheduled to teach a class on Sept. 11, 2001. I heard by phone that a small plane had struck the WTC. We went to internet sites and saw pictures. Later our internet connection was lost (not sure why). Others at work were able to watch the news in conference rooms. I was shocked by the images, unbelievable. I heard about the second plane and then a third and fouth on the way, somewhere. We cancelled the class I was to facilitate, who could concentrate. My work let us go get our kids when the governor announced schools were closing. I was so afraid of what would happen next, I didn't know what to tell an 8 and 10 year old, the schools had not told them. We went home, I told them what I knew and I let them see it one time. All planes were grounded that evening, the skies were so quiet. I think I saw some war plans the next night. I've seen some amazing TV programs since Sept. 11 that have helped me understand things. I still cannot imagine being one of the people on those planes or being in the top of the WTC. I've seen pictures, but was never there, what an amazing set of buildings.
