I remember think "oh my God" and yelled to my husband "we've been attacked". I didn't need to hear the News Caster say, I just knew it. I sat there thinking for the longest time, those poor people. I thought of the children with parents any longer and I cried. As we wacthed that morning we thought we were seeing a replay, but it was the second tower being hit. Tht image is burned in my mind. Saddly our day had to go on, as a Customer Service Rep. at a cable company we wacthed what was going on, and we answered calls many out the coverage, or people asking if their cable was out when it would return, becase they had loved ones in NYC or DC. When I got home that night I called my Family in Minnesota to make sure they wee all ok. Bless all those who lost their lives in NYC, DC and on PENN. Bless and keep their famlies. Tell us your story: I was in the parking lot of Tedeschi's store in Eastham, Ma. on Rte. 6, sitting in my car waiting for my husband to come out of the store . We were on our way to drop him off at work at a house on Beehive Rd. in Eastham where he was doing the floors for a remodel. I was listening to the radio when the announcer broke in and said" This just in: A plane has hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. We don't know too much more right now. It could be an accident or possibly an act of terrorism. Stay tuned for more news as we get it." I didn't think too much of it, living on Cape Cod seems to make one feel immune to the problems of the rest of the world. Then as my husband was coming out of the store,the announcer came back on with the news that the other tower had been hit and it was definitely an act of terrorism. We both sat there shocked and said" Wow!" That's all we could say. We drove out of the lot towards the work site in silence. When we arrived at the work site I said:"I guess we're taking a train to Arizona next month because I'm never getting on a plane again!" We didn't..we flew out, buts that's another story. The rest of the day went by kind of normal but not as I went to work my self at Star Market in Orleans and bits and pieces of news dribbled in throughout the day. It was all really wierd and eery feeling, like Iwas watching a movie or something. Tell us your story: i went in to work earlie and all morning i was telling my co worker something didnt feel right like something was going to happen she asked if it was like something was going to happen to me or what and i said no something big something that is more then me or you i dont know but somethings not right an hour later the report came over the radio that the first tower was hit the feeling was gone and all i could think was it was a terrorist and i told my co worker she said no maybe it was an accident some freak accident i said no no somethings not right theres no way then the second tower was hit and it was confurmed terrorists imeadiatly i got worried about my friend in collage in new york and wondered how far away was his collage from there i only had an hour left of work then i could call his family and see then they started talking about sending military out and i thought no my brother is in the marines whats going to happen will he be shipped out will he be sent to new york were was he now would he be able to call me befor he left a million and one question ran through my mind what was going to happen next i had to fight to keep from crying then i left to come home and alot of other employees were leaving muttering iv got to go get my kids i rushed home to see if my boyfriends mom had got her to younger kids from school she had so i called my half sister and asked if she had heard from my brother she said no we called eachother on and off untill 9 that night for three days i sat up late untill1 am waiting on a call from my brother i wouldnt eat and work was unbearable not knowing if he had called while i was gone finally he called and said he was staying on the base in washington state they werent going to ship him out yet we talked about things like if he was who to call to find out and and who to call and tell them he was getting shipped out and all it still feels like it was yester day that it happened the stress and worrie and the confusion i was mad scared and upset hurt and saddened by it all in the same moment how could some one do something like that the people who lost loved ones the ones who lost there lives doing there job trying to help others then the children . then i thought how sad it was that it took something like this to make people be kinder and more respectfull of others and stand as one . it shouldnt have taken something as horable as that to make people look at what is really important and care for one another as they should have all along. those people who died shouldnt have had to die to be heros or to be honored they were heros to there children to others and it shouldnt have taken that to make people realize that each life is precious and meaning full and that every living thing should have some sort of respect even those dogs that died from the rescue teams they gave there lifes to help try to find another life befor time was to late. people need to open there eyes and realize how short life really is. Tell us your story: I had just gotten up on that morning, and went to turn on GOOD MORNING AMERICA ( wich I watch every morning,} when they interrupted the station with a news flash that one of of the world trade buildings had been hit by an jet plane I stopped dead in my tracks to watch, when to my horror they showed the second tower being hit by another jet plane. I was stunned, and not believing what I saw. I said how could this be happening. Who could do could so such a horrible thing not once but twice within minutes of each other. Then hearing about the jet crashing into the Pentegone and yet still another jet heading straight for the pentegone , but crashing in Pennsylvani was in my mind horrifying. I was in a daze the rest of the day. To think of all the lives that were lost was just unbearable. I couldn't imagine what was going through the minds of the people who had love ones who were in those jets or in the twin towers that they would never see again. As I watched the story unfold I thanked God that I did not have any loved ones on those jets or who worked at the twin towers, then I began to pray for all who were involved in this deadly diasaster, that people would find their loved ones alive and if they didn't that at lease they would have comfort in knowing that their loved ones did not die in vain. They were victims of some cruel sadistic person, and never thought this could happen especially in the U.S., but now we know it can happen as it did. So we should not only be ready as we are for another attack on the U.S., but we should be spiritually ready in our hearts. We should be asking our selves "if we were to die today would we go to Heaven", and if we are not sure ask the Lord to come into our hearts, and forgive us for our sins. If you don't know how to do this, then go to someone who does. I know that going to my Lord and savior has gotten me through this last year. Even though I am getting over what has happened on 9-11, I will never forget it, and I am still praying for all the loved ones who were left behind. I also want to say to those loved ones when you can't bear the pain anymore take comfort in knowing that Jesus is right beside you to ease that pain, and help you get on with your life. May God give you peace and comfort as you go no with your lives. When I woke up to get ready for school(i wake up before everyone else) i was worried about wether i should where the blue shiny pants or the low cut jeans. Then, my aunt called and said "drop what your doing and turn on the news" i did what she said and i could have sworn i was watching some movie! i turned it on right as they said "John, roll the tape again for all those people who just tuned in." they played a tape of the first tower coming down, that's when i just about fainted. mid fall they cut the tape off and said " braking news! the second tower has fallen! another plane has crashed into it!" then i figured out, this was live, really happening! they showed the towers falling, and the pentagon, at first they said it was an accident, probably a training pilot, but then they realized it was a terrorist attack. as i watched the buildings collapse on the screen i felt as if my heart was with them, because for the rest of the day, i didn't do anything, i sat in each of my classes, depressed. of course, i wasn't punished for not doing any work, pretty much the whole school was depressed. if you came to my school that day, you would have seen all these people just drooping and slowly walking to whichevere class they came to. i bet a slug could have beet us in a reace with how fast we went. But the one time we were feeling up and ready, was the pledge of alliegence. They were from many Latin American countries; such as Mexico, Venezuela, Columbia and also from China and Korea. The office secretary walked in with a red slip in her hand and I immediately thought something was wrong within the school. Her note read; "A tower in New York has been struck by a plane". My face must have reflected my confusion and dread. A plane hitting a tower in N. Y. as horrible as the thought is, is a lot different from it being a deliberate act followed by another at the Pentagon; my students asked, "What's the matter?" I said a plane has hit the towers in N. Y. City-but that is all I know." By mid -afternoon when I was continuing with Spanish Language classes, I had one young girl ask if I thought they would come and attack us and I assured her that it seemed to me they were attacking the government and the area where most of the government buildings are either located or are near. I thought of the 2nd World War and how secure, at 7 years old, my parents and Pres. Roosevelt had made me feel. We lisened to the news and being raised in Corpus Christi, we heard the night practice flights, our black blinds drawn; found leaflets all over our yards in the mornings and then went off to school, Crossley Elementary, carrying our school bags and wearing dog tags with our family name on it. It never occurred to us, me at least, that that dog tag was my I. D. in case war broke out. I also remembered the "under the desks drills" and how my teachers never spoke to us about the war and I offered to walk my young charge to her next class, talking all the time about how our own little community of Cy-Fair was safe. One way I have coped is by trying to find some understanding in this mess. It seems that most Americans have chosen to believe that the hijackers were brainwashed radical religious fundamentalist terrorists that hated Americans. After all the media has not labeled them anything but terrorists for more than a year now. We get terror alerts, are updated on the war on terror, see terror bills signed, look for terrorist cells, find out terrorist this, talk about terrorist that, and have the opportunity to watch news shows called ?The WAR on TERROR the HUNT for the KILLERS!? It is no wonder most Americans think the events of September eleventh were acted out to provoke terror. They did kill more than 3000 people and disable a major transportation network! So we proclaim them terrorists and we fight to stop them. But can we think beyond this one scenario? Another way to understand this situation is by trying to understand the hijackers themselves and their cause. It is difficult to understand people who have killed themselves and thousands of others for a cause, but it is important to try and find out why all this happened. Let?s look at the facts, 4 planes, 2 towers, the Pentagon and almost the US capital. This translates as 4 bombs; two aimed at capitalism, one at US defense, and one at the US government. This is an obvious form of communication by Bin Laden and the hijackers, compounded with serious action against the United States, but it was not meant to be an attack against US citizens. After all it would have been easy to poison portions of the American food and or water supplies, hit nuclear power plants or dams, or to fly a plane into the Sears tower. Any of these actions would have been deemed an attack against American citizens or an act of terror, but these did not happen. The hijackers where not interested in killing innocent Americans. They were interested in communicating and were willing to pay the ultimate price for a cause they believed in which was to change how capitalism, US defense, and the US government controls many situations in the world. Unfortunately many of the individuals that worked in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were integral parts of the entities that were being attacked. Another reason I have a hard time categorizing the hijackers as terrorists, is because if this is true then all our friends and loved ones that died on September eleventh will have died in vain. As terrorist victims they unknowing gave there lives for nothing other than to be murdered by madmen. But this does not have to be the truth. These 3000 plus humans should be viewed as heroes, as true martyrs. Heroes whose sudden deaths helped changed the world for the better by having the United States and the world grow in understanding and act accordingly so the hatred and resentment toward America can be minimized therefore preventing, the need for more of these outrageous and painful acts. But now we come to the question. Did America really deserve what happened on September eleventh? 70-80 percent of people polled, in England, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Russia, South America and even Canada believed that the US had it coming. This worldview should be enough to make all Americans think and consider deeply the actions of our nation before transforming ourselves into instant patriots. Our nations actions and our tax dollars provoked the events of September eleventh and this is something I am not proud of. We must listen to the world and try to behave in ways that will not make us such a deserving target. We know now this is an issue of national security. An attack on Iraq will generate even more world hatred for the United States and guarantee future attacks against the US. We shouldn?t be using our military might to remove governments and replace them with ones that will submit easier to the needs of our oil addiction while using the excuse that some madman might have weapons of mass destruction. The truth is our nation?s oil addiction is the most massive weapon of mass destruction. Global warming is here and will get worse in the decades to come. Most of our world has acknowledged the need to act immediately by signing the Kyoto treaty, but the United States has not. The United States is now aiming the ultimate weapon of mass destruction at the entire world and it is only a matter of time until the world aims back. As Americans we must remember that our tax dollars are the fuel for our nation?s power and one real way to weaken the power of the United States is to destroy tax-paying Americans. Less Americans alive = less Americans paying taxes = less money funding the US military. Since the United States continues to behave in ways the rest of the world finds globally irresponsible American citizens are in serious danger. If the desire to weaken the United States exists then America and Americans are more likely to be attacked. As a nation we need to transform this desire by behaving differently. We need to listen, understand, and behave accordingly as a world partner before it is too late for America. I was in the 8th grade and i didn't even realize how big the towers were until they fell. I was astonished until it sunk in and i realized that people were in that massive building when it fell. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Like the home page says, we are all a part of this time in history and here's my small part from the other side of the US. I had gotten up late on my way to the second day of a new job and forgot to turn on the radio. Within five seconds after doing so, my favorite and most humorous radio personality Jamie White announces that a second plane has hit the second tower of the World Trade Center - I was thinking that she's joked about some weird stuff in the past - but this isn't even funny. I realized when I returned my "full" attention to the road everyone had immediatlely slowed down - almost to a complete stop on the freeway. How could this be, I thought. I called my best friend in Burbank who anxiously answered the phone and angrily asked why I hadn't been picking up my cellular phone. As it all began to settle in and I heard that the tower's began to collasped you wanted to reach out and hug someone, be near someone - not in your car alone. By the time I reached my new office, I found out that one person had family members that were missing (they were eventually located two days later - my silent prayers answered for people I didn't even know). An hour later the building received a threat that a plane was headed directly towards us because of broker type company being located in the building - everyone was leaving the building....turned out to be a hoax by a very sick individual that was never found. When leaving that evening, I drove home numb - not wanting to be alone, but not knowing who to call as all my family is out of state. I eventually ended up home to begin the many night vigil of watching the news, praying for people to be found, praying for the people that had died and prayed for the families that were left behind. I spoke with my mother often - somehow needing reassurance that she were alive and I could get to her even though I know she was no where near the affected cities. It than dawned on me one day. I had done that exact flight as the terrorists from Portland, Maine to Boston, Massachusetts heading on to Los Angeles just back in May, 2001. Thank God, my sister graduated on time from nursing school. It took until the film taped by the two europeon brothers, was on television for me to sit and sob out of grief for our country. Up until then, I had been numbed, unable to grieve. I sat that night sobbing, grieving that I wasn't there to help, grieving for the people that died that I didn't know, grieving for the people that will never forget the horrors they say that day, and grieving that people that could do such a horrible thing live in our world. The impact of September 11, 2001 has made me take more time to be friendly and patient to people I don't know, take more time before I hit the horn to let the person in front of me know I'm waiting, take more time to let someone with less groceries or crying kids to go ahead of me in line, etc. I now take more time for myself - I went away on vacation this year with just me. I left the cellular phone (which has played "New York New York" since my brother moved there in February this year)and pager back where it belonged - at home. I visited another country and came home even more thankful for what I have. I started volunteering my time at a church that provides a lunch for the homeless and downtroddened on Saturdays - not just feeding, but hugging them, getting to know them by name - who knows, people don't set out in life to be homeless, something happened to them along the way. It may not have been as nationally devestating as 9/11 but it was just as devastating to them. Unlike those who perished in the Towers, or at the Pentagon or in the planes, they are still alive and need us - so here is where I put my energy and feel a bit better every Saturday about the world. I grew up on Long Island and lived in Manhattan for 5 years and considered "the City" my home. New York has always had such an electrifying energy, it has such a strong spirit and I cherish my time there. I miss it terribly. I just moved with my husband, Erik, to Chicago and we were getting settled in our new place on September 1. I was working with him as a trader and Sept 11 was my first day. Erik, noticed the markets were just plunging and kept on saying "something is wrong, something horrible just happened." This was before the news hit, before everything unfolded in front of our eyes. I and others in the office reassured him that things were ok, maybe a company warned. Then, we saw the first crash. We were all thinking, how could this happen, how can this be an accident? Then, the second crash and the newscaster said, "America, we are under attack, we are at War." I just started crying uncontrollably and kept thinking how can something like this happen. I was also praying for all those people in the twin towers, in the area as well as those in the Pentagon. I didn't know anyone in the buildings but my brother lost a friend. He had a 6 month old and a 2 year old and I met this man, a young guy in his 30's a few years ago. My heart goes out to him and to the families of those who perished. I have come across a lot of situations where peoples luck changed their lives. My friend was supposed to be in the Trade Center the day it happened but he had to cancel his appointment with a client because he had a doctor's appointment in Midtown. My old roomie was givend 2 offers at firms: one in the trade center but she chose the latter. My mom's assistant teacher's sister was in the Trade Center but she was on the 50th floor in the 2nd building and was quite lucky because she survived. When it happened, I wanted to be in New York, to help, to do something. My family all donated blood and went to the Javitts Center to help make sandwiches for the rescue mission. I felt so foreign in Chicago because my heart will always be in New York. This year, I was in a 4th grade classroom in Chicago working as a teacher's assistant. I was extremely emotional and found that there were a few people in this school were indifferent. It is quite sad but since this wasn't there home I can see how it didn't truly impact them. Had it been their city under siege, maybe they would've been a bit more compassionate. The teacher I worked with discussed it in class and the principal had all go outside and say the pledge which was nice. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: What Happened That Day I woke up around 6 a.m. It was just like any other morning. I didn?t have any bad dreams or premonitions. Mostly, from the moment my eyes opened, I was pre-occupied about the day and rest of the week ahead. I had three major video shoots that would each take several hours. "It?s going to be a looong week," I said to Dan with a sigh as I got ready. Hurriedly, I pulled on my long brown skirt and then a brown jacket. A button inexplicably bounced off and landed on the floor. Irritated, I tossed the jacket on my bed and put on a cream colored one instead. Outside the sun was shining and the air was warm; another beautiful day in a string of beautiful late summer days. My mind racing, I thought of everything I wanted to get done in the next 15 minutes before arriving at work: take money out of the ATM, check out a house someone had mentioned was for sale, and get a coffee. I had a book on my lap on how to be smart with money. I was going to try to read it at lunch to get strategies for our finances. Turning onto an unfamiliar side street, I scanned for this house someone had suggested Dan and I might want to buy. I couldn?t find it. Annoyed, I shoved the car in reverse and headed back to the main road. I?d have to look another time. At Dunkin? Donuts, the drive-thru line was long, as always. I decided to put it in park and read my book. Once I got my coffee, I proceeded to pull out of the parking lot and spill it on my hand. Frustration began to bubble again. I arrived at work at around 7:45 a.m. and started answering e-mails and editing a few projects I was working on. One was about the new artificial nails policy for health care workers. The day was off to an utterly and absolutely boring and inconsequential start. Then I got up to go to the bathroom. When I left the bathroom and walked towards Conference Room 504, which is just outside my cubicle, I heard the television on and could see people hanging around the doorway and inside. "What?s going on?" I asked Mark McCandlish, who works across the hall in Human Resources. "Two planes hit the World Trade Center," he told me. I didn?t completely absorb his words at first. My mind reached back and remembered that years ago a plane had hit the Empire State Building. Nothing too disastrous had happened. As I stood there watching the "Today" show, slowly it dawned on me that there were two holes, one in each tower, smoke and flames billowing out of both. One plane could be an accident. Two? How could that be? Then they showed the replay of the second plane hitting the tower. There were several different camera angles, and each one was terrifying. This absolute horror fluttered within me and gradually grew. My heart began palpitating. Sue went to call her sister who works in New York City. The rest of us stood there, unable to pull our eyes from the television. Sue came back, saying she couldn?t get through ? a message kept repeating that all the circuits were busy. At the bottom of the screen they had started running this ticker. "Reports of an explosion at the Pentagon," it read, and "One of the planes that hit World Trade Center identified as an American Airlines flight from Boston." Boston. Now we were really getting close to home. Jodi went to call her friend, an American Airlines flight attendant who flies out of Logan. The words on the ticker were becoming more frightening every time I looked. "The Pentagon is on fire" -- "Reports of an explosion at the State Department" -- "Capitol Building and White House evacuated." I wasn?t even listening to Katie Couric. I just watched. They cut to the President, at an elementary school in Florida, where he had been reading with children. Now, he seemed strangely out of place, standing there with children and teachers, while he made his first comments about the attack on America. NBC and the other stations had quickly decided that the morning?s events needed a name. At the bottom of the screen, above the ticker, we were suddenly "America Under Attack" or "America Under Siege." Everything seemed real but unreal. I was shaking uncontrollably yet also felt almost displaced from what was happening, as if I was watching myself react rather than truly reacting. I went back in the bathroom and just sat in a stall, shaking. "Please God please God please God," I kept praying. My thoughts couldn?t form any other prayer. I seemed to be frozen and stiff, and almost moving in slow motion. I went back to my desk for a moment and typed an e-mail to Dan. The television was still blaring. I couldn?t leave it for more than a moment. Now they were announcing that the Pentagon had been hit by a plane. The ticker said: "United Airlines says it is ?deeply concerned? about Flight 175 en route from Boston to LA." They announced the President had gotten on Air Force One and was flying ? somewhere. Marie headed to the phones to try to find news of her nephew, who works in the Pentagon. Sue finally got in touch with her sister in Manhattan, who said she could see the smoke from her office building. They had been told to leave the building and walk home. If I stood up, from my cubicle I could see the television in Conference Room 504. As I stood and stared with Elzbieta doing the same in the cubicle in front of me, we both witnessed the first tower collapse. There was no warning. It just crumbled like one of those buildings on a documentary about demolition. At that point, I really just felt like I was watching a movie. "Oh my God, think of all the rescuers in there," Elz said, but my mind didn?t grasp it quite yet. I still couldn?t believe it had just crumbled. There was smoke everywhere, but you could still see the other building. I remember thinking irrationally that if the other one would just stay up, this wouldn?t be so bad; we would have at least salvaged something, and hey, one tower was better than none. But in a matter of minutes the second building fell to the ground too. "Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God." That?s all we could say, our hands over our mouths. At that point, I felt as if nothing was impossible. Maybe these people, whoever they were, were going to blow up everything. Maybe the White House would be gone, and the Statue of Liberty, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Maybe this was the end of America. We switched the TV to CNN. The FAA had just suspended, for the first time ever, all air travel in the United States. There were still, however, 1,000 flights in the air that hadn?t been stopped in time. Were there terrorists on any flights? No one knew except the air traffic controllers, who were trying frantically to contact each plane. There was this feeling of grim expectancy just hanging in the air. Yet in the middle of it, several people said they were headed down to the cafeteria to get some food. I shook my head at the offer to come with them. Food was the farthest thing from my mind. I could barely swallow. More news from the ticker: "Disney World evacuated;" "Sears Tower in Chicago evacuated;" "Hijacked plane may be headed for White House;" "Air Force One arrives at undisclosed location." Everything was happening too fast. I felt as if my mind couldn?t keep up and was just limping along, processing what it could. Everyone brought up their food and sat in another conference room watching CNN on the big projector screen. No one really talked. The anchor announced that a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. They still weren?t sure about the plane headed for the White House. So we just sit here and wait for it to happen, my mind screamed. About then Michael, my boss, came up and asked me to go over to the hospital. They were in Disaster Plan standby and he wanted me over there to get the latest news. Getting off the elevator, I saw the security guard sat not watching who came in the door but the news on a little black and white TV on his desk. As I walked through the doors I heard a big crash and jumped. It was just a truck down below near the building?s basement, unloading something. Outside the sun seemed unnaturally bright. The day suddenly hit me as too blue, too ordinary. Again I felt the sense of surreal. I looked up at the sky and somehow heard this immense and haunting silence at there being no planes anywhere. On the radio in the car, there was no music. Every single FM and AM station had switched to news, either the local DJs reporting or tying into a national feed. When I reached the hospital, I felt this strange sense of everyone trying to go about their business while something was very, very wrong. I passed empty conference rooms with TVs blaring the news. In one, a Food Services worker stood there, just staring at the screen. I headed up to the conference room just off the cafeteria where our "Command Center" was set up. There were three TVs on, turned to three different stations, a laptop computer, and scores of phones, most of which were silent. The hope was this: if there were thousands upon thousands of seriously injured people in New York, Baystate would be called to help. We could accept transfers by helicopter, or of patients from Connecticut hospitals to free their beds for New York patients. Many clinical employees were calling to volunteer their services. We took their names but learned slowly and painfully through the afternoon that our help was not needed. People in New York either got out safely, or just didn?t make it. There was other information to glean. We were in touch with the City of Springfield to find out about school closings and other canceled activities, as well as the state?s response to all of this. I kept calling back to the office, where they were quickly crafting e-mails to send out to employees. "Schools are not closing in Springfield, but extra curricular activities are canceled." "A prayer service will be held at 3 p.m." "The Blood Donor Center will stay open until 8 o?clock." Every once in a while, I?d look back at the television. There was smoke billowing out of New York City. Thousands of people, many covered in dust, were headed across a bridge, trying to get out. Some ran and some walked as if in a dream. I got a call to meet Mark Tolosky, the CEO, in the Emergency Department so he could do a TV interview. Both Channel 22 and 40 were already at the hospital. Back in the halls, I rushed around, still not really thinking about anything I was doing. Almost hysterically, I remembered that sometime in the afternoon, Jane Clark from the Red Cross was supposed to come over to review a video we had worked on. It was all about disaster relief. Somehow I had the feeling she wouldn?t be making it. Back in the Command Center someone was passing out cookies and soda. I took some and realized it was the first I?d eaten all day. My head was pounding. The chocolate chip cookie was burnt. For some reason, I became furious with this security guard who was in the room with us, watching the TV. "Whoever did this, we?re gonna kick their ass," he said, almost laughing. Why did some men have to respond like that? I thought. Why is there this need to act macho when really this is just awful, horrible, no matter whose "ass" we kick? Finally, the call came from my boss. I could go back to the office. Sometime around then, I seemed to zone out. I felt exhausted and drained. I don?t remember riding back in the car or going back to my desk. I think I watched more TV and sent more e-mails to Dan. I counted the minutes until I could leave. At 4:30 I got in my car and drove like a zombie the seven minutes to home. I noticed a letter in the mailbox. It was from Southwest Airlines, confirming my reservation for a flight to St. Louis on October 4. In the bedroom, staring at that envelope, I crumbled for the first time. My knees felt weak as I sank to the floor, weeping. "It?s awful, it?s just awful," I could only say over and over. After a few moments I turned on the TV. Just as with the radio, every station had abandoned regular programming. Even the Home Shopping Network had gone blank, with nothing but a message on the screen about the day?s events. VH-1 and MTV played national news. I think only Nickelodeon stayed with cartoons, for all the unsuspecting little ones out there. Watching made me start crying again. I picked up the phone and called my mom. "How can we fly on a plane now?" I burst out. "I can?t do it. I just can?t do it." She was crying too. We stayed there on the phone together, talking and crying and watching TV. Then I hung up and just lay there on the couch, watching. They showed video again and again of the plane hitting the building, then the buildings disintegrating. I don?t even know what I watched; I just lay there, staring. At 6 p.m. Dan came home. I still didn?t move. He came and sat next to me and both of us just watched as the sun went down. The President was back in Washington after flying to several secret locations across the U.S. For the only time that day, I felt overwhelming relief. All of these Democrats and Republicans were gathered for a press conference on the steps of the Capitol building, talking about how they were forgetting their differences to fight terrorism. At the conclusion someone started shakily singing "God Bless America," and then the rest joined in. I wanted to cry and laugh, it was all so bizarre. I got up finally and made a few sandwiches. It was dark now. Still we watched, but then suddenly the TV started acting squirrely and then the cable went out. There was nothing but snow, on the biggest news day ever. We decided to turn on the radio. I don?t even know what station. Late into the night, we sat, me on a chair and Dan on the couch, hanging on to every word. A reporter announced a truck-full of men had been arrested and were suspected of trying to bomb the George Washington Bridge. I curled into a ball, shivering. The night stretched on toward midnight. I was afraid to go to bed. I was afraid to leave the radio. At any moment, something might happen. I had to know. Finally, we could no longer keep our eyes open. We dragged ourselves into the bedroom and crawled under the covers. My mind kept working, seeing fire and planes, hearing the news anchors. I didn?t want to sleep but wanted desperately to sleep. I clutched Dan tightly, not wanting to feel alone. I don?t know if I prayed. I know I wanted to. But I have never felt so paralyzed. Outside the night was still summer. There were crickets but the skies were silent. There were people in houses who were going through all of this with me, but I didn?t think of them. It was just me and Dan and everyone at work and the Towers and the Pentagon and those planes. Over and over and over, in dreams that were barely dreams because I barely slept. I had been woken up by my father as it was the day I was due to ship out for boot camp in the United States Navy. I rolled around in bed for a few more minutes then made my way downstairs. My Mom and Dad said "Look whats goin on" then I turned my head and saw what I thought was the Air Traffic Control Tower at JFK on fire. I said "Is that JFK?" they said "No, its the Twin Towers, a plane crashed into one of them this morning." I replied "Is it bad weather or somethin?" "No sunny as can be" said my Dad. After he spoke those words I saw an object approaching the second tower and striking it. "Is that how it looked when it hit?" I asked, "No" said my mother "That just happened!" I will never forget the feeling in my gut at that moment. It is one that is indescribeable and I hope will never be repeated. As the day progressed I was still getting myself ready to get shipped out to Great Lakes for boot camp. It was when I was buying new shoes at the Rugged Warehouse in Annapolis that we heard of the plane hitting the pentagon. I thought to myself "This is serious....what is next?" We rushed home and when I got home my recruitter EM1 Bruce Piatek USN, was on the phone and said, "Mike, due to the events that have happened today, you wont be able to get out today". I said "I understand, just keep in touch." He replied "I will, expect to go out tomorrow." "Ok, I said" The day passed and the headlines came and the next day Sept. 12. I was dropped off at the recruitting station, and off to MEPS we went. Once there we continued to watch the news until they put us on a bus from Baltimore, MD to Chicago,IL when the country was in peril. The whole ride to boot camp I thought to myself "Im so proud to be going to serve my country when it needs me the most! I had never felt better, and Knowing the the fact that I would help get the bastards that did that to us. So There I was, me and 79 future sailors confused about the times, knowing we were the ones that would have to get the next job done! It was a special time at Great Lakes, we knew this was a new kind of war. But we were not afraid. Because we were all americans affected the same way that day. And it changed us all forever. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was walking to the 6 train on 23rd Street that morning, like I do every weekday morning. The first plane had already hit and there was black smoke streaming across the sky to the East. At first I thought it was a brush fire in New Jersey, until I saw one of the towers on fire. I thought it was terrible and could not wait to get to work to get on cnn.com to find out what happened. When I got onto the train I knew something was wrong. Everyone was talking to each other. Now I don't know if your from Manhattan or not, but the people who are know what I?m talking about when I say that everyone talking to each other on the train in the morning, going to work is not usual. In fact it's kind of scary. I felt like everyone already knew each other. Of course by the time I was at my stop I had heard about a plane and people were already guessing about terrorism. When I got to work everyone was a mess, trying to find televisions or radios. A co worker and I went next door to a deli where they had a TV in back. As soon as we walked in the second plane hit. I remember everything stopping, no one said a word. People started crying when images of trapped workers in the towers falling to their deaths came on the screen. I stared at the television for what seemed like 4 or 5 days until I watched the North tower fall. I remember seeing the radio antenna shift to the side and I just stood up and said "no." I don't remember, and I still can't to this day if I said that out loud or not. Walking South down 2nd ave from 59th Street was a strange experience. Everyone was comatosed, just walking briskly like one of those old alien movies when they take over the minds of the townspeople, and make them all congregate in the middle of the night. At one point these 12 or 13 year old kids, obviously ignorant, immature and honestly, not so bright were making comments about World Trade Center Tours and making wise cracks. This next to people walking uptown covered in human and building remains. I am not a violent man by any means but I cracked and grabbed one of these kids by the upper arm sleeve and swung him around so he was facing me, standing a good 7 inches taller than him. I don't even think I said anything but his friend got the picture, apologized and shoved his friend away down a side street. By this time I was at around 30th Street and the number of chalky figures walking uptown was increasing per block. Each was surrounded by people asking questions, and trying to help. One business man was walking with his briefcase still in hand with the posture and casual demeanor someone would have on any other day but this one. Until he got closer and I saw his face. He was in a daze in total shock, just walking. I doubt he even knew where he was going. I wanted to help but did not know how. What could I say? After getting home, gluing the TV onto cnn and making sure I answered all the message boards my friends had created in lew of the cellular phone fiasco. I got onto my 25 story roof to try and get a better signal when I got a call from a friend in Jersey City on his roof. We watched the # 7 building come down together on the phone and tried to comfort each other. That night I walked to Union square with clothing and blankets and a hard hat I had acquired to donate to the rescue effort. There had to be 10,000 people there, all with candles and tears. It was very emotional and I don't know if I could have kept my sanity without it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just taken my children to school and had gone to my grandmothers house to visit. We had been watching television when this awful news came across. It was really hard to believe. I was worried but at the same time confusesd. I spent the rest of my day at the school where my children were, helping out. At least I was with them. A few weeks later I hear about the U.S. dropping food to those who may or may not had been involved in the attack on the U.S. and want to know why we allowed them to live here in the first place most of them for free. Maybe we the U.S.A. should let them fin for themselves because this is what they made us do, and here we are still doing it today. Are we going to let this continue until they get enough weapons to really wipe the Americans out? What do are children have to look forward to. Tell us your story: I worked at 7 world trade center on the evening shift. 6:00pm til 1:00am..I was on vacation and on september 10 I got back to work..My day routine before going to work was very different on september 10 than any other time.... I usually get my music magazine and my minidisc player for the trip to the trade center ,which is a 45 min train ride from upper manhattan.But on that day I left it behind so I stepped out the door of my building and for some reason a thought came to my mind,that I felt that I wasnt going to work on september 11..So I get to the token booth and I asked the clerk for a $17.00 metro card but I changed my mind and asked for a $3.00 card so I went off to work. The time is 12:50 and Im walking out 7wtc so I walked up to the wtc and no matter how many years Ive worked there I was still amaze of the size of these buildings so I looked at them and walk away ,with a gut feeling that I was not coming to work tomorrow..... so now its 9,11 and im sleeping and I hear my cell phone ringing with numerous people calling me and asking me if I was ok,but I didnt know what was going on until I on NY1 thenthe rest is a painfull history,....... Tell us your story: The morning started off normal, phones ringing, printers printing-I remember talking with an employee at our Wytheville distribution center & he asked me if I had heard about the plane that had crashed into the WTC. At first I thought it had to be an accident, they happen everyday. Then alot of commotion started happening in our office & I heard of the 2nd plane. Being from Upstate New York, I called my mom,she works in a government building in NY so that scared me. While on the phone with her I found out about the Pentagon being hit. I thought to myself that this couldn't be happening. She had to get off the phone because she had to find out if any of her managers were on any of those flights. With alot of talk around our office I was really scared at this point, we had figured out they were hitting large&hurting many at a time. Working near a nuclear plant didn't help my fears at all. I can remember Sept 11th as though it happened yesterday and the indescribable lose I felt. The pain I felt for the people directly & indirectly involved. That day I was forever changed. I found myself obsessed with the internet that day, one of our managers had a tv in his office but there was still work to be done. Things slowed down here that day, and I was thankful for that. It made it alittle easier to keep up with what was going on. My boyfriend called and told me to come home, he was scared the nuclear plant might be next. I told him everything would be alright & was going to continue the day at work,knowing if I went home and could actually see on TV what was happening it would drive me crazy. And even though I stayed at work it did drive me crazy, after work I went to Walmart & bought a radio so I could listen to talk about it. I watched every television station that played non-stop coverage on it. And drove myself mad for the next month. I cried everyday, not for myself because I was scared but for the people who were lost & the loved ones who lost them. My family was so worried about me,they would call my little brother(who lives in North Carolina also)not me to find out if I was alright or if they had committed me yet(and that is no joke) anyway the events of that day changed me forever, I will never take life for granted again & think that nothing like that could happen to us. It's just a shame that such a disaster had to happen for everyone to reunite as one. To everyone and anyone who lost a loved one in the attacks, my heart is with you everyday and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think of September 11th and what was lost. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a college student at the University of Baltimore and I was at the school that morning. I had a 9:30 class and I was wasting time at the computer center on campus. About 9:10 or so, someone came in to the room and said we were under attack and they had bombeed the World Trade Center in New York. I doubted this highly, yet I had to investigate. I immediately went to the New York Times website, where I found a photo of the first building on fire, with an accompanying video. My first thought was a lone person with a mental deficiency had hijacked the plane, and something went seriously wrong. Unfortunately, I had to go to class without more information. I arrived at class, and the professor had only heard breifly about it with no details. Some classmates had not heard anything at all, since it happenned during their commute. I seemed to be in possession of the most knowledge, so I relayed the information I had. We debated about whether to continue with class, and I opinioned that one nut job should not disrupt the entire class. I had no idea of the depth or impact of the collision at that time, but it was my hope that minimal damage had occurred. We decided to continue our class on American Political Institutions. I have since come to regret that decision. My next class was at 11:00, and it was an Ethics class. I saw our professor taping a note to the door that class was cancelled due to the tragedy, and I asked why it was so devastating that class would be cancelled. After all, that spring, class had not been cancelled after a six inch snowfall, so I could not fathom this garnering enough impact to cancel class. He informed me of the second tower being hit, in addition to the pentagon. That made it entirely different. Our country was under attack. By whom? Why? How? Yet most importantly, I rembered thinking - What did we do to piss someone off that much to want to cause such distruction? In the weeks to follow, I would learn more about the intervention of American policy in foreign lands, and I realized they had a point. It did NOT justify the action they took, yet I was able to sympathize with their frustration. I was not initially upset due to the tragedy and I often wonder why. My base reaction was one of concern, for I did not understand why this was happening. In all honesty, I was amazed that it had not happened sooner. It was a compliment to our intelligence gathering organizations that a similar attack had not yet occurred to our country, considering our vulnerability due to our pursuit of freedom. We made some quick adjustments, and we constantly undergoing change due to the events taht happened that day. Our sstruggle for freedom is not over and we have to make yet more changes aqnd sacrifices. May God have mercy upon us.
