Tell us your story: I was driving from Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo along US131 that morning when I heard the local radio station say that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. They had no information and said that they thought it was a small twin enginge plane and continued with their morning show programming. Shortly after that the second plane hit and their was a drastic change in the announcers voice. The jokes and chatter were gone now. As soon as I arrived at work I got onto the internet only to find that virtualy every news site couldn't handle the traffic and had shut down. A group of us went to the K-Mart next door and we joined at least 80 other people in front of the television displays. One tower had already collapsed and I stood there in absolute disbelief as the other tower came down. When the pentagon was struck there were reports of a bomb going off. When I finaly heard that it was another plane I was terrified. Who could do such a evil thing? As word spread about the plane crash in Shanksville we debated on what caused the crash. Was it shot down by the government, did the passengers rush the cabin? No one knew what was going on. Driving home that evening I remember looking up at the sky and thinking that there was something strange. I didn't place my finger on it until I drove past the airport and realized that there were no planes in the sky at all. It was such a beautiful day in Western Michigan September 11, 2001. Nothing exciting ever happens, not even with the football team. I was late to Algebra, but my teacher wasn?t in the room so I got lucky that morning. Ready to go and full of energy, while her mouth moves a mile a minute about her weekend?s excitement, my teacher began class. She always tried so hard to make math interesting, but no matter how hard she tried, I think math will always be the subject where you look at the clock every three seconds or so to see how much time you have to kill. So after an hour and a half of total brain warping, I went to my best friends locker, where we meet every day at break. After the shortest twenty minutes of my life flies by fourth period, my most favorite class awaits my glorious presence. Upon all of my classmates? and my arrival, instead of explaining our agenda my fourth period teacher went on by saying?? I don?t know what you all have heard, but supposedly planes crashed into the Pentagon, and World Trade Center, but I don?t know any more than that?? Seeing how we did not have a TV in our room we all gave one second of a thought about it and went right to work. As the class went on more and more students from my class were being taken out of class to go home, that is when the tension started. A brief time later, Dr. Smith came on the loudspeaker. At that moment is when things in the school lost control and went into panic mode. Girls started crying, teachers babbling about stuff that makes no sense, to take our minds off of it, and people staring into space with blank faces, and all you could do was wonder, because nothing was for certain yet. And after the announcement fifth period came all too quickly. My teacher wanted to get her lesson about childbirth done all in one class period, but with a class of all girls that have an awesome teen attitude or get emotional about a pencil breaking, it was hard for anyone to concentrate. Finally we convinced her to let us watch the news, because our excuse that hit the spot was ??in thirty years when we tell our children we were stuck in fifth period learning about how to birth a child when the country was having a national crisis and our teacher wouldn?t even let us watch the news for five minutes!!? After that remark from a special senior in my class my teacher had to give in so we went next door to the cooking classes and watched in disbelief as the most massive buildings in the world were damaged in a way that cannot be described. At first I was really immature and in all my writings in English about the attacks. I would make up huge fantasies about a world war three that would wipe out the world and how aliens would come and inhibit the earth, but I was so tired of writing the same things and being asked the same questions over and over again. We have had bloodier wars than this attack. I think it is great that the pride factor has been raised since then, but to me it is not a huge part of my life. Maybe it is because nothing happened to my family personally, I do not know, but there could be worse things. But until anything worse happens people need to live life like they used to and be thankful that they live in a wonderful country that will take care of them. Tell us your story: My husband and I were at Fairfax Hospital having an outpatient test done on our 2 year old when we walked into the waiting room and I saw an elderly woman sitting in a chair, wrapped in a blanket with tears in her eyes. I followed her gaze to the TV where I saw the towers burning. My first thought was why are they showing footage of the '93 bombing, but I quickly realized that this was live. My heart began to pound, we are from NY and we have siblings who work in Manhattan and some in lower Manhattan, and there were countless friends and former co-workers we know in the city. WHile we were watching in horror, the reporter on the phone from the Pentagon started talking about what seemed to be an explosion at the Pentagon and how the building shook. Withing moments they confirmed that the Pentagon had been hit by a plane, and suddenly my horror of the situation in New York turned to fear as I realized it was now in our own backyard. The plane they said had taken off from Dulles Airport was a mere 10 minutes from my house and the school where my older child was. My husband, who works at the Washington Navy Yard called to see if they had any information and or advice as we were pretty far from home. STAY AWAY FROM THE CITY and get home via back roads as the major highways were being shut down. We watched the first part of the tower crumble, and then the TV was turned off for the test to be preformed on our little girl. By the time we were leaving both towers had crumbled and we were sick with grief. There were reports that another plane was headed for DC and it was right near us circling over the beltway. Then a tech told us that the hospital was going into "lock down" we had no idea what that meant, and really did not want to find out. My husband, knowing that the best thing we could do was get out of the area, got us out of the hospital and on our way home. We were in the car when the phone rang, and I guess we both knew it would only be a matter of time, our country was under attack. You see my husband is a LCDR in the NAVY Reserves, and that call was asking how soon he could be ready to go. Nothing official, but to be ready. It is so clear now that NO ONE knew what was happening, and fear was engulfing us all. When we finally arrived home there was an erie silence. Everyone was outside, but no one was speaking above a whisper. THe answering maching brought relief, as there were 23 messages from family and friends saying they were OK, but were worried about my husband being in DC. Thankfully we did not loose anyone on that day, but it has directly effected us because in February, my husband was recalled by the NAVY to serve for one year in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Everyday as I struggle to get through another day being a temporary single mother of three, I remind myself of the thousands of women who are now permenant single mothers because of 9-11, and for thier pain and grief I offer up my hardships. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a NYPD Detective and I was in my office in Brooklyn. My office looks across the water into Manhattan and the Twin Towers. One of my colleagues just left the office and returned suddenly stating that he heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Center; we turned on the television and saw the smoke coming from one of the towers and I thought to myself that it must have been a small plane like the one that hit the Empire State building years ago. Then I and several others went outside to look and I saw a plane flying low coming from the the direction of the Statue of Liberty going toward the towers and I thought it was trying to avoid the thick smoke coming from the towers. I turned to go inside when I heard this scream form one of the females from my office who was up on the roof of our building; I ran up to the roof and she was hysterical; screaming and crying, I asked what happened and she said that another plane hit the building. I turned and scanned the sky realizing that the low flying plane I had been watching was the second plane that hit the towers. I felt an empty feeling come over me and I ran downstairs and jumped in a car with another detective and drove to the Battery Tunnel so I could go help whoever I could. I am also an Emergency Medical Technician and I knew that this was going to be a horrible, horrible day. We were unable to get through the tunnel for approximately an hour and when we came out the other side I was stunned by this time both towers had fallen and there was smoke and ash everywhere you looked. It was about a foot deep all over. I saw ESU trucks crushed, police and firetrucks also. empty shoes all over the street where people had run out of them in fear or where someone had jumped from the towers. Tell us your story: really i was in class when it happened, but i first heard about it right after i closed my locker and two people on the other side of the lockers were talkin about something. At first i didn't believe them because all I heard was plane, and the World Trade Center. I was a little excited with emotions and went straight to my first period class in which we had a test that day. The class was mmp which is like a sub teen teaching class. I think i failed the test which everyone finished in ooo i would say 45 seconds. We had a t.v. on and the school didn't want anyone to because it was amatuer footage and as you know anything can happen such as a second plane crashing into the South Tower. I didn't see the first plane hit, but I did watch as the second split the South Tower like a first class sgrt. in battle. It was very astontatious and i couldn't say anything or move, but my eyes kept on the t.v. ever so tightly. I am not mad or frustrated that I watched in the slightest bit. How am i supposed to know that i will be safe tomarrow when i go to school, how do i know it wont happen again.Even though we have the best defense as in the army or the air force, those are just people like me and you living through the same fear. When my teacher entered the room, I could immediately sense something was awry. He looked like he was about to address the class, when the principal came over the intercom. He announced that there had been acts of terror in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania. I was in a state of shock, but it didn't have a huge impact on me at first. I went through the rest of my day, mostly discussing the day's events in my classes. Some rooms had televisions, but the picture was not very clear. It was not until I got home that afternoon that I felt the full impact of the day. I was able to witness my first clear pictures of the tragic events and became sick to my stomach. It was horrible watching innocent people perish, not only inside, but by leaping out to the ground below. Later though my fear came for a different reason. My father is a police officer in Boston, and I was afraid that if New York and other locations were attacked, Boston could be next. I was afraid something might happen to him, and it was the first time I was concretely aware of the risk he took to his job everyday. Fortunately, no more attacks have occurred on our soil, and hopefull that trend will continue for all eternity. Tell us your story: On the evening September 10th, 2001, I had opened up my laptop and popped in Armageddon DVD starring Bruce Willis, Liv Tyler, and Ben Affleck. I stopped watching the film right after the initial asteroids and meteors had impacted New York City. One of the last things I saw before I shut my laptop off was of a huge meteor blasting a wide, black, smoking hole in the North Tower of the World trade center. My alarm was set to around 6:30. I had to get up to go to work. Instead of the local radio show, I heard Peter Jennings or Tom Brokaw. My first memory of that day was the anchor asking an aviation expert why a plane could accidentally fly into a building...What the hell I thought? As I awoke and wiped the cobwebs from my brain, I raced into the living room and turned on the TV to see two of the most famous buildings in America smoking and on fire. Debris fell from the buildings constantly. The anchors were in a near panic. I sat down on the couch to soak up the situation, then called my mom and dad over and woke up my two younger brothers. I examined the buildings on the TV. "That had to be a Cessna, or other small plane." Alas, I was wrong. Within 10-15 minutes, the networks started showing the tape of the second aircraft hitting the building. It was an eerie feeling watching America under attack in such a fashion. Within a half hour, we had heard rumors of an attack at the Pentagon, a Car bombing at the State department and a crash in Pennsylvania. The local AM Radio station said that there were hijacked airplanes heading to Los Angeles to complete what the LAX/Millenium bomber in 1999/2000 had failed to do. At this point, I was still thinking of going to work, not realizing that my office was going to be closed that day. I called my best friend (a Marine Corps reservist) and told him to wake up and turn on the tv. We were both shocked. I then took a shower, and right as I got out, the first tower collapsed. I was amazed and horrified. I'll never forget the anchor's tone of voice on CNN. It was the most horrific moment of my life, worse than the Challenger disaster that I also watched live as a 10 year old boy. My mom was in near tears, my dad dumbfounded, my brothers already wanting revenge. I was in complete shock. As we continued watching the coverage, I started praying for people at the site. Then the second tower fell, and we finally saw some footage of the Pentagon. I headed over to my best friend's place at about 11:30am PST. We watched the coverage for the rest of the day, wishing we could do something. By 4pm, I was emotionally and physically exhausted, and I sank into the spare bedroom of his and cried myself to sleep, wishing and hoping it was all a bad dream. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Chris Cordaro As I entered my third period classroom a most disturbing sight befell my eyes. I observed a flaming tower. In the clamor about me I heard that a plane had unintentionally collided with the great structure. I still had no real sense of what was unfolding when my instructor turned off the monitor and began the lesson as he normally would. As I stepped into my fourth period study hall I was still unaware of the gravity of what was occurring. As I entered I saw my teacher and several classmates gazing awestruck at the monitor. In joining them I saw a second plane strike what I recognized as one of the World Trade Center Towers. I listened in terror as the full situation was laid before me by the newscaster. Three separate planes had launched an assault on the trade towers and one upon the pentagon. Mere minutes later I watched in shock as the towers disintegrated without warning. The dust seemed to engulf the whole of New York City and camera shots were a cloud of gray. As the dust settled and the immediate danger had passed a search was already begun for those who had committed the most abominable of acts. I was shocked that this search and anger had begun prior even to grieving for those who perished. Televisions in all remaining classes were tuned to news stations while my classmates and I sat anticipating the next event in the horrific sequence. Little occurred other than the government saying the blame rested on the shoulders of Bin Laden and the governing body of Afghanistan. I returned home to an awestruck family. My father seemed anxious as he consoled my distrait mother. All media outlets enduringly reported the latest developments for several days. Yet eventually this ceased, as did the overbearing nationalism that had been caused by the atrocities. At present all seems to have returned to its typical state. This although comfortable leaves us exposed to more attacks such as those that occurred. It is clear that much must be altered in order to prevent such occurrences in the future. Ed had his tv on in his office and it was just past eight thirty am, September 11,2001. As he did some paper work at his desk a news bulletin broke on the screen. A picture of the World Trade Center appeared and one of the towers was on fire. As we watched a second plane hit the other tower. We watched in total disbelief. When the shock was over I told Ed "those towers are going to fall. There is no way it can take that heat". It was a prediction I wish never came true. I went directly to my closest hospital knowing that they would use me or send me on. I stayed there and we set up triage. We took orders. We understood our orders. We waited....for the injured, burned, the broken. By 2pm, we were told to go home. There were no patients. It was the most empty feeling I ever had. Since that day, I help out with the Red Cross where ever and when ever I can. Sometimes it is scheduling volunteers, sometimes working in the family centers. It is so sad, no matter where it is. All I want to do is bring these people back, bring the towers back, bring the City back. Bring myself back to where I was before 9/11. We will never be the same. We can never forget. We can always support our troops and pray for them. I feel blessed living in America. Really blessed. My FIRST reaction was terrorism,just then the phone rang and it was my 25 year old son who had just moved back to New York that weekend,he grew up in Houston but was born in New York and wanted to move back. He was at the corner of Broadway & Cedar sts. in lower Manhattan a block away from the towers,where he went for a job interview, he asked if I knew what was happening and I told him that the networks were already saying that it was a hijacked airliner and there was more coming,I told him to tell everybody there what was happeng and to run away from the site.The next time he called was from the Brooklyn Bridge and he described a scene from hell,he saw the dying,and the firemen going in,and the collapse of the first tower wich he was injured in,[he was under that black cloud that he described as the blackest darkness he had ever seen].I found out later that my brother-in-law who is a New York Fireman was also badley injured in the collapse of the second tower,my son and brother in law were only a block apart. Tell us your story: Alone, in my kitchen with my sports page, my coffee, my Beagle, that beautiful weather that morning and the everpresent 13 inch TV. My thoughts around 9:15 are irretrievable, a million dollars laid before me could not make me remember now what small thoughts where occupying my mind at the moment I focused on the image from my little TV. A reporter on a rooftop, with the building in the distance, over his shoulder. It all came next. Unlike a conventional fire scene, where your perspective is from the ground up, with all the accompanying men and equipment, the beautiful Towers, our Towers that where to be a wonder for the eyes and the ages for generations to come, stood with their wounds high up in the sky, so helpless they looked, in retrospect, they seemed alive, staggered like wounded animals, they're killing them and we can't reach up to help them. When they showed my fellow citizens jumping. Just jumping into death to avoid the fire, I had by then dropped to my knees, fully aware of what I was watching, the reality of it, and prayed to God to make it stop. It got worse. But History will show that the seeds for our victorys to come where sown before the beautiful Towers even collapsed. The moment people started to help others, the fact that hundreds of firefighters and rescue workers had arrived, gone in, and where fighting to get high into the sky to save others is our strength. We have taken the courage shown just minutes after the supposedly wonderful victory over America and congealed it into a pit of the stomach resolve to never let them do this again. How Pyric a victory that left behind the weapon that will destroy them- American courage. I've studied American history since I was a boy. And I've often wondered if past generations where a stronger lot than we, I mean how could men do the things I read about, Iwo Jima, Normandy, Gettysburg. How could Picketts men begin the charge, take the actual steps into the open field, knowing that they were running face first into certain death. Where did they get that courage? Do we have that today? After watching film of the fireman in the lobby of the beautiful Towers willing to charge face first up the stairs I feel an awe that until now has been reserved for the most famous of our Patriots. And that is how they will be remembered, American Patriots who performed their Duty so well that they "stole the thunder" from their attackers before the sun even set that day. Within a day we had learned of the flight over Pennsylvania, and the American courage displayed, by Americans to save other Americans. And we drew strength from this. Let future generations read and wonder how in the days that followed Americans, even with the news that Antrax had been released in our cities, found the courage to function. We went to work, we continued to live and we will now confront our enemies face first. And we will forever be grateful to those brave people who performrd their duty on the darkest hour in American history. I was reading e-mails and getting organized for the day ahead when I received a frantic call from my husband. He was at home feeding our son when he heard of the first tower being hit on the radio. He ran to see it on the television. When he called he replayed the horror of the first hit and I listened to him scream "Oh my God, a plane just ran into the second tower". My heart sank. I began to cry and shake. What was happening? Were we under attack? Who would do this? I tried to log onto a news website to find out more information but they were all overloaded. There are no televisions that actually get reception in our building. All I could do was wait for my husband to call back with news. I was meeting with another director that morning and we decided to move it over the the Mariott Hotel so we could watch what was happening. Hearing the news was devastating, seeing what happened cannot be described in words. All I wanted to do was get my 10 month old son and hold him and never let go, which is exactly what I did later that morning. Someone used the word "armageddon" when the Pentagon was hit. Never before had I had so much fear for my family and friends. From that day on, I will never neglect my God, my family or my friends. They come before anything else in my life. I take time to smell the roses and I don't take anything for granted. Although I did not lose any family or friends in these tragedies, my life will forever be changed. Tell us your story: I can remember it as if it were yesterday, the intersection I was at, the utter suprise the dj on the radio displayed,the second plane had hit. That's when I first heard of it.The United States was under attack and I was alone in my car with just the dj and God. I stopped to call my parents and husband. They were aware of the situation. When I met the students none of the teachers or employees at the museum knew. The whole tour was unnerving for the adults, we didn't tell the 5th graders, they just thought there had been a plane crash. I was so thankful to be with my only child. I found solace, I know so many parents were rushing to get their children all over the US. After the tour I let her proceed on to school and I went to work. We attempted to work, but we were all so stunned not much progress was made. Between the tv's, radios and numb conversation, it was so surreal. I never got over it as long as I was working there. Now, in retrospect, I realize that I went through a state of depression. I cried after the moment of silence at 7:44 Sept. 11,2002. I was practically sobbing by the time I got to work. No I lost no one, I knew not one of those who perished, but through the media I learned of their stories. The horrible loss of all those innocent victims. And the ignorance of those who murdered them, all for what? Terrorists are obviously not aware of the Book of Job or the story of Jabez. Adversity is the foundation for success and power. They can destroy our icons, upset our goverment, but they can never take our freedom from us. They think they can put obstacles in front of us, but we only see them as a challenge. I stay home with our two year old daughter and as such was still in my robe. Giving in to my daughter's pleas for Elmo, I popped in a tape for her in my bedroom and then sat down in my kitchen to the crossword with NBC's Today show on in the background. The news that there had been an accidental plane crash caught my attention. The fact that it was a crash into a huge highrise seemed odd, being that it is a rather easy object to steer clear of. I sat beside my fireplace with coffee cup in hand and watched with shock at the second plane coming in and exploding. The shock soon turned to horror as it was realized that these crashes were no accident. I tried to get a hold of my husband, needing to connect with something real in my life, to no avail. I called a girlfriend and together we tearfully watched as the fabric of American liberty was being ripped. How could this happen, who could hate this much, were there any more survivors, how would the widows and orphans ever recover? Another looming question - where would they strike next? For the rest of the day, I sat and watched, tended to my daughter, and called friends and family periodically to make sure this was not just on my TV set. It was 3pm before I realized that I was still in my robe. Before bed that night I hugged my daughter and husband extra tight, grateful for the opportunity to have another day with them, an opportunity denied to so many that same night.
